First, we eat, then we do everything else. – M.F.K. Fisher.

This is definitely true in the case of Punjabis who are true gourmets. To them food is everything, and no one can savor the fatty delicacies in all its true splendor like a Punjabi does! The culinary capital of India- Amritsar is proof of this fact. The home to the iconic Golden Temple  is also home to the best food in the world. Everything in this city revolves around food- be it socializing, prayer or festivals. Kulchas, lassi, jalebi, you name it and it will be found in Amritsar.

Hers is a list of 10 Must-Have Amritsar Food:

1. Langar Ka Prasad

When in Amritsar, start out with the Golden Temple. The best time to visit is during the morning when the Guru Granth Sahib is brought to the inner sanctum. After offering your prayers, head over to the langar, the largest free kitchen in the world! The volunteers here cook and serve a simple meal of dal, roti, sabzi and kheer to lakhs of devotees each day. Even if you don’t have the time for langar, don’t leave the Kara Prasad on your way out. You will have to jostle among a large crowd for this ghee-laden delicacy but a bite of it will prove to be totally worth it!

2. All India Famous Amritsari Kulcha

Amritsar is synonymous with Kulchas, the maida bread baked in a tandoor. Located beside the Golden Temple and the Wagah Border , the All India Famous is a place to have the butter drenched, potato and cauliflower stuffed kulcha. Touted by some to be a foodie’s pilgrimage spot, this place has been serving just kulchas over the many years of its existence. You can have kulchas for all your meals of the day here and each of it will be an experience incomparable to the other. They serve kulcha alongside chana masala, sliced onions and tamarind chutney. It is a perfect place for breakfast or lunch since they tend to run out of kulchas by 2 pm!!

3. Kulcha Land

Kulcha Land located at Ranjit Avenue might confuse you with its name, but the kulchas here are as authentic as they get. When you visit this place you won’t need a menu card, because all they serve here is different varieties of kulchas. They have been serving fresh-off-the-tandoor kulchas since before the partition. Don’t be surprised if you find a Tempo Traveller full of tourists unloading at Kulcha Land! The crispy kulchas are simply mouth-watering and washing it down with lassi will simply make your day.  Kulcha Land is undoubtedly one of the best places to eat in Amritsar.

4. Friends Dhaba

For all the people who prefer a meatier version of Kulcha, Friends Dhaba located at the Queens Road is the place to rush off to. They serve Keema Naan with gravy and, of course, dollops of butter. The keema kulcha has a crispy exterior and a spicy keema mix. (I can already feel my mouth watering!) These kulchas simply disappear in your mouth, yes it’s that tasty.  Don’t forget to slather it with butter before dipping it in gravy, and have a near-spiritual experience.

5. Surjit Food Plaza

Serving some of Amritsar’s best kababs, Surjit Food Plaza has been in existence on the Lawrence Road for over seventy years. It has recently been turned into a fancy restaurant with proper seating and air-conditioning, and a menu that served even Chinese staple dishes like sweet corn soup! What’s really popular though is the melt-in-your-mouth Shammi Kabab and Mutton Tikka . What makes them so unique is the totally different style of cooking. The tikkas are first cooked in tandoor, then sautéed with ghee on the tawa and has a secret masala handed down over the generations.

6. Beera Chicken House

The Beera Chicken House, located at Majitha Road will totally change your concept about tandoori chicken . It is not the traditional red or charred tandoori chicken most of us grow up with, rather it is a whole chicken, marinated in spices and roasted to perfection. Their recipe for tandoori chicken has been in existence since 1972! Imagine! Just around the corner from this place is the Makhan Fish & Chicken Corner , home to the tastiest fish tikkas . These fish are taken from the Beas river and fried lightly in a batter.

7. Pal Da Dhaba

A small, easy to miss shop at the Hathi Gate has turned into one of the local favourites for its Kharode ka Shorba. In other words, lamb trotter soup! Not something that you will easily get used to, but for those people who love a good Paya, this place is a must visit. It is run by the proprietor himself, who is also the chef here. The dish is laden with garam masala, chillies and lentil leaves. It is best paired with kheema paratha, so soft that it will break even before you eat it!

Pal Da Dhaba

8. Kesar Da Dhaba

For all the vegetarians out there, Kaser Da Dhaba located at Chowk Passian and a 10-minute walk from the Golden Temple is nothing short of an epicure’s paradise. They serve the best maa ki daal in the city. Also, gorge on the delicious lachcha paratha, palak paneer and the smoky baigan bharta. If this wasn’t enough, or simply because you want to eat something sweet, don’t leave without tasting their phirni . This creamy delicacy is served in earthen pots and will definitely leave you asking for more.

Kesar Da Dhaba

9. Ahuja Milk Bhandar

Spending a day in Amritsar, you cannot imagine going without at least one glass of lassi. It will be a disservice to the gastronomic place, the land where people swear by ghee and lassi. The Ahuja Milk Bhandar, located at Dhab Katikan is one of many such places to try out this sweet heaven right in your mouth. Reach out for a tall glass of lassi so thick that you will need a spoon to scoop it out. The secret ingredient used here is a natural essence that even the most experienced patrons fail to decipher. Remember, food in Amritsar is never complete without Lassi!

Ahuja Milk Bhandar

10. Hall Bazaar

Head off to this place to experience the incomparable fruit cream and kulfa . Fruit cream is basically a shaved, ice-like concoction of fruit, cream and dry fruit. Now you ask what is kulfa?? It is an Amritsari version of kulfi, which is a sort of an ice-cream, topped with noodles like falooda. Both these dishes are served in such huge quantities that you can hardly have the whole of it!

Where to eat in Amritsar: 10 spots that offer the most authentic food experiences

By Devika Manghnani

food amritsar

Amritsar is most popular as a tourist destination because of the Golden Temple. But if there was a second reason to visit the Golden City, it has to be the delicious Punjabi food that is served at almost every corner. To get a better inside on what the busy streets have to offer, we got chef Saransh Goila to reveal his favourite restaurants in Amritsar, and the dishes he loves to eat there. Scroll ahead for his recommendations.

The langar at the Golden Temple

Instagram content.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

On top of chef Goila’s list is the Guruji ka Langar at the Golden Temple. The chef tells us that the Golden Temple has one the biggest community kitchens in the world, and one cannot miss out on having a first-hand experience of how they run the show. Serving simple home-style food with utmost dedication—rotis, different types of dals, and local vegetable dishes—the langar is provided 24/7, and consumed by almost one lakh people every day.

“The most popular form of kulchas, [Amritsari kulchas] are the only dish that’s well travelled across the country,” says chef Goila. His favourites among the plethora of spots that serve this iconic dish are Ashok Kumar Kulche Wala and Kulcha Land. “While the kulcha at Ashok [Kumar Kulche Wala] is slightly more crispy and flaky, the one at Kulcha Land has better stuffing,” he tells us. Usually topped with butter and served with chana masala, these lip-smacking dishes are sure to please even the most critical customer.

Puri Chana or Puri Aloo at Kanha Sweets

food travel taste amritsar

If you’re looking for a hearty Punjabi breakfast, don’t miss out on Kanha Sweets. Chef Goila recommends the Puri Aloo or the Puri Chana. “It’s not a bhatura, it’s a puri,” he says about the crispy, thin ghee-soaked Indian fried bread. Dipping the puri in their aaloo ka sabzi, which has a tarri floating on top, is an experience you’ll savour for days after you leave Amritsar. We suggest you try their Besan Ladoos and Pinnis as well—you won’t be disappointed.

Amritsari Fish Tikka at Makhan Fish Corner

food travel taste amritsar

“Some people call it a fish tikka, however, there are places that do a duet—they’ll put it in a tandoor and also deep fry it—and there are places that do separate dishes,” chef Goila tells us about the iconic dish. His favourite spot for this dish is Makhan Fish Corner, which is also a popular joint among fish lovers in the city.

Address: 21A, Near Madaan Hospital Makhan Chowk, Majitha Road, Amritsar

Sarson Ka Saag in the village of Atari

food travel taste amritsar

Chef Goila suggests heading out of Amritsar to a village named Atari for the most authentic Sarson Ka Saag you’ll ever taste. “I stayed with this local family about 30 kms outside of Amritsar, close to Wagah Border , and they taught me how to cook the dish,” remembers chef Goila. The family also took him across their fields, and showed them how they cultivate their own ingredients for the dish. “You’ll sit and cook the Makki Ki Roti on open fire,” he reveals. The Saag is unlike anything you’ve tasted before. “It’s coarse and you can see that the leaves are not ground properly. You can smell the fresh pounded coriander—I feel like it’s the most delicious Sarson Ka Saag I’ve ever eaten,” the chef says. If your itinerary does not allow a road trip, the chef recommends two crowd-favourite eateries—Kesar Da Dhaba and Bharawan Da Dhaba. “They both do their own take on the dish, but [if I had to choose] I’d recommend the latter,” he says.

Addresses: Kesar Da Dhaba, Chowk Passian, Near Telephone Exchange, Amritsar Cantonment, Amritsar. Bharawan Da Dhaba, Hall Bazar, Golden Temple Out Road, Town Hall, Katra Ahluwalia, Amritsar

Tandoori Chicken at Beera Chicken House

food travel taste amritsar

Next up on his list were the unmissable Tandoori Chicken and Tikkas served at Beera Chicken House. The scrumptious, juicy pieces of meat will leave you wanting for more even before you finish your plate. The Butter Chicken over here is a great pick too, but if you ask the chef, he suggests heading to Ludhiana for the best version in town.

Address: Shop 100, Opposite Bhandari hospital, Majitha Road, Amritsar

The mutton dishes at Adarsh Meat Shop

“This one comes highly recommended,” reiterates chef Goila. “Their mutton is suppose to be one of the [best in the city]. It’s cooked really well, so much so that the mutton falls of the bone and it’s really spicy ,” he adds. He has already planned to make a pitstop here on his next trip, and suggests that you do the same.

  • 10 Famous Places To Eat In Amritsar That Every Foodie Must Try

10 Famous Places to Eat in Amritsar That Every Foodie Must Try

Food is one of the foremost aspects of culture and tradition when we speak of Punjab. That’s because Punjabis are known to be passionate about their lassi and sarson da saag but that’s just the popular ones. Every meal in a true Punjabi household feels like a celebration of lavish proportions.

The same spirit is endowed by the streets of Amritsar that have become pilgrimage points for foodies. This city is reputed to be amongst the most sought-after regions in the whole of Punjab where food is the apex for the local population. Owing to this, Amritsar tour package s always ensure that tourists get a taste of this city in the literal sense! History has it that Amritsari women used to prepare only rotis at home while the men brought dal, chicken curry, and other dishes from restaurants nearby. This was done because people trusted the chefs who prepared fresh food that was not expensive for the common man. This culture can still be observed across the city that has now turned into a huge metropolis with its roots intact.

Come along with us and discover the 10 best restaurants in Amritsar:

1. Marvel at vegetarian delights at Kesar Da Dhaba

When we talk about the best places to eat in Amritsar, Kesar Da Dhaba is synonymous with this line of thought. Standing tall in one of the busy lanes near Chowk Passian, this eatery has become a tourist attraction in the city. Serving only north Indian vegetarian fare, there hasn’t been a foodie who hasn’t raved about Kesar Da Dhaba. Achieving legendary status in the city, numerous food magazines, journals, and influencers are convinced that it is, indeed, amongst the top restaurants in Amritsar even after nine decades.

If you are a don’t-judge-a-book-by-its-cover kind of individual, then this place is right for you. Highly recommended dishes by Panditji, who takes care of guests at this food joint, are dal makhani, malai kofta, Punjabi chole and laccha paratha.

2. Fall in love with non-vegetarian food at Beera Chicken House

Majitha Road is popular in Amritsar because the best non-veg restaurants are located here. Tourists and locals can be found walking around sparkly-eyed and drooling mouths looking for the most mouth-watering chicken and mutton dishes. Beera Chicken House, a local favourite, is situated right opposite Bhandari Hospital. The chicken tikka, keema naan, and tandoori chicken have become so popular that many travellers plan out their itinerary of places to visit Amritsar in such a way that this restaurant comes along the way. Make sure you build up an appetite before you got here!

3. Make non-vegetarian dreams come true at Crystal Restaurant

If there is one eatery in Amritsar that has made a mark in the city in the best way possible, it is Crystal Restaurant. So much so that an entire chowk has been named after this landmark of a food joint. Located in Maharaja Ranjit Singh Nagar near Company Bagh, it is easy to spot this place. If you speak to the locals, most of them consider it to be one of the best non-veg restaurants in Amritsar.

Crystal offers a wide range of delicacies that have the finesse to them, for instance, the murg tawa frontier is a unique blend of spices that cannot be found anywhere else in the city. In the early 2000s, sizzlers were popular across all metropolitan cities in the country, however, the trend has lost its charm. But at this restaurant, these sizzling hot plates of meat and veggies continue to bring in hundreds of customers every day.

4. Turn into a pescatarian at Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner

Another treasure found at Majitha Road is a restaurant that has solely made Amritsaris crave for fish. There used to be a time when it was a small food joint, however, with its magical delicacies served round the clock, it has now transformed into an air-conditioned restaurant today. Termed as one of the top places to eat in Amritsar, Makhan’s fish dishes are simply beyond comparison. Ever heard of fish do pyaza before? We bet you haven’t! The sheer dedication to creating unique delicacies that are priced reasonably is what sets apart this restaurant.

5. Make your foodie soul happy at Kulcha Land

Kulchas in Amritsar’s best restaurants can anyone go weak in the knees. The maida-based bread, kulcha, which is flavoured with white butter, herbs, and several spices, is one of the greatest inventions in Punjab. While there are several food places in Amritsar serving kulchas, the one that stands out is Kulcha Land. The menu at this eatery on Ranjit Avenue is very simple. They only serve two types of kulchas, namely, potato and paneer. Accompanied by a tall glass of lassi, these kulchas can make food critiques salivate! Once you have visited Kulcha Land, there’s a good chance that you will be recommending it as one of the best places to eat in Amritsar.

6. Gorge on local favourites at Surjit Food Plaza

Lawrence Road houses several famous restaurants in Amritsar, but the one that cannot be missed out on is Surjit Food Plaza. Revered as the ideal place for mutton kebabs and curries, it is a paradise for non-vegetarians and vegetarians alike. Let’s be real, if Vogue Magazine is beating the drum for a food joint, then there has to be something special about it. Preparation of tikkas at Surjit Food Plaza is very unique as they tend to cook them inside the tandoor first and then tawa-fry with spoonsful of ghee and a secret blend of species. Yes, we know that you are drooling already.

7. Try multi-cuisine delicacies at Sakhis Watz Kukin

Vacationing in a new city often includes trying out food items that we are not used to. So, the first thing we tend to do is find authentic places to eat in. Amritsar as a city is known for its traditional foods, but there are restaurants that are serving amazing multi-cuisine fare with a touch of Amritsar in it. Sakhis Watz Kukin is a highly recommended restaurant by the locals as it offers Italian, Chinese, Afghani, and Mediterranean dishes as well.

If you are keen on enjoying deliciously prepared cheese nachos, tandoori machli, or honey chilli potatoes, this one’s for you.

8. Treat your taste buds at Grand Trunk, Taj Swarna

In the city of Amritsar, the best restaurants share a common factor - love. Every dish that is prepared by trained chefs or humble halwais, paying attention to detail is taken very seriously. Offering this sincerity along with an opulence that is unparalleled, Grand Trunk is a fine-dining restaurant situated inside Taj Swarna. Dishing out traditional food items such as aloo wadi, gobi paratha, and paneer kulchas, this luxury restaurant is worth every penny. Perhaps this is why it is part of the famous food places in Amritsar list for foodies across the globe.

9. Relish pre-independence food at Kava Grill and Lounge

Travellers who seek the best eating places in Amritsar sometimes end up going to restaurants that are just promoted by people with limited knowledge of the city. If you ask a food connoisseur living in this city, s/he would suggest you give ‘Kava Grill and Lounge’ a go. This is mainly due to the fact that this particular fine-dining experience celebrates the love between two long lost siblings - Amritsar and Lahore. The history shared between these two cities can be witnessed on each plate of food at this luxury restaurant set inside Fairfield by Marriott. Dahi kebabs, dhaba gosht, Amritsari jalfrezi, and dal kava are the most popular dishes here.

10. Indulge your palate at Punjab Province, Hyatt Regency

Fine-dining in Amritsar can be the best food experience if places like Punjab Provence are chosen by travellers. Nestled inside the swanky five-star hotel, Hyatt Regency, this restaurant is an undisputed pioneer in Amritsar’s list of places to eat in style. Top chefs of the country make every dish a piece of art at Punjab Provence.

For this reason, taking out some time from your hectic itinerary and unwinding at this luxury restaurant is a must. Appetisers that can make your heart race include kala kukkad, lamb chapli with anda, and paneer tikka. In the main course, trying out the Patiala rum masala raan, sarson da saag, and papad paneer ki sabzi will help you feel a sense of nirvana for sure.

Now that you are well-versed with the best restaurants in Amritsar, book your travel package and get ready to hog! Your palate is in for the treat of its life!

The Best Places To Eat In Amritsar For That Authentic Taste

When one talks about Amritsar, it’s not just the Golden Temple that instantly flashes before the eyes but also its food, which is passionately celebrated, wherever you are or wherever you go in this holy city. Menus of Indian restaurants in almost every part of the planet ardently take advantage of its fame by labelling many foods and drinks as Amritsari, from lassi and kulcha to fish and chicken and even many traditional desserts.

“Besides my visits to the community kitchen at Golden Temple, where my grandmother and I often volunteered, the rich food scene of Amritsar did play a role in boosting my culinary-loving spirit,” says the famous son of Amritsar, Chef Vikas Khanna, who moved to New York City some years ago. “I may be based in New York now, but I always miss the food of my hometown.”

Amritsar-born comedian Sudesh Lehri, whose work took him to Mumbai, says, “Whenever my family and I have to come to Amritsar, we come with a list of eating places we want to visit. Our favourite is the kulcha.”

If local chefs are to be believed, other than the passion behind the food, most of them also give huge credit to Amritsar’s water, labelling it ‘sweet’, which adds a flavour of its own. Many also talk about the spiritual connection.

While Amritsar is keeping its many traditional food items alive, over the last few years, a battery of new concepts has also brewed. Here, we have a quick guide, ensuring you don’t miss out on some of the best food experiences, and of course, we have also gone beyond the usual recommendations.

These places to eat should be on every food lover’s amritsar itinerary, one of t he best place s for kulcha: pehalwan kulcha.

Places to eat in Amritsar

Kulcha, a flat spicy bread filled with mashed potatoes and made in a tandoor (clay oven), is truly a cynosure of the Amritsar food scene. No wonder the staff at the hotel concierge desks are quizzed daily about the yummiest kulcha places. Pehalwan Kulcha on Lakshmanser Road near Chatiwind Gate is one of them. Entering this place — a large room that can seat about 20–25 customers — the busy tandoor welcomes , which crafts many varieties, from the most ordered ‘M ixed filling Ku lcha’ to its just about three-year-old creatio n, ‘Pizza Kulcha’.

“Its base is heavy and is baked just like other kulchas but as it comes out of the oven, we sprinkle cheese on it, which stands topped with many veggies, including corn,” says Harish Kumar, Pehalwan’s owner. This place, which opened in 1953, has often appeared in several international travel shows, and as its name suggests, it was the creation of a wrestler who had migrated from Lahore after the Partition.

If you plan on trying their pizza kulcha, it will come sliced into four pieces and served with their secret sauce. Many order it after the regular kulcha for a cheesy end. Whatever kulcha you may order, it will be served on butter paper along with curry of chole (chickpea) and salad chutney, which comes in small bowls made of dry leaves along with a wooden spoon.

The tables are large. So, expect to join other customers from different parts of the country and beyond. The walls carry vintage pictures of the owner’s father from his wrestling days. The staff is attentive and friendly, and they always begin the process of taking the order by asking, ‘Would you like it spicy or not so spicy?’ No tea is served, but soft drinks are available.

The most popular tea room : Giani Tea Stall

Places to eat in Amritsar

It has to be a place called ‘Giani Tea Stall’ on Cooper Road, just before you take the Bhandari Bridge, where, besides its delicious tea, kachories, samosas, gulab jamuns, paneer pakoras, warm butter buns, and the all-day breakfast meal of ‘bread omelette’ loaded with assorted veggies, delight infinite tongues. It’s also a favourite of morning walkers.

They not only keep the tiny room with six large tables occupied but also the pavement, where they are seen sitting on stools every single day with tea glasses in hand. “Their menu may be limited, but whatever they serve carries quality. For me, their kachories stand out, which is a beautiful combo with their tea, but they run out by 1 pm, sometimes even before that,” shares Amritsar-based food blogger and chef Jagjeet Singh.

Interestingly, this tea room is also a must-stop for many celebrities, as its walls are dotted with their pictures, from Bollywood stars such as Ranbir Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee to politicians such as Navjot Sidhu and Arun Jaitley. “We opened our doors 18 years before the partition in Lahore’s Anarkali bazaar, and after the partition, we moved here. It received the same love also in Lahore,” its elderly owner, Giani Gurmeet Singh, tells us.

Favourite fine dining restaurant since the British era: Crystal

Places to eat in Amritsar

Located on Queens Road, it has held its reputation since its opening in 1935, when it started as an open-air restaurant, as per Surinder Kochar, an author and historian from the city. “It was the first restaurant where Indians were also allowed to visit during colonial rule. As it dished out many European delicacies, it was also frequented by the British folks, including officers,” Kochar informs.

Even today, it continues to exude the vintage European charm that one can feel with the first step in. Thanks to the furniture, the art pieces on the walls, the Victorian-style decorated ceiling, the smartly dressed servers in black and white, and of course, light English music in the background. The à la carte menu includes Chinese and Indian cuisine as well.

Crystal is also known for its softy ice cream which is served outside. “We were first in the region to install a softy ice cream machine. It was imported from Italy in 1960 and ever since it has been an instant hit,” informs Crystal’s owner Ankul Khanna. Despite many flavours, Vanilla tastes the best!

The newest restaurant with a vintage setting: Rang Punjab

Places to eat in Amritsar

Housed in Town Hall, a British-era building on Heritage Street near the Golden Temple, it celebrated its first anniversary just a few months ago and labels itself as a vegetarian ‘dhaba’. Therefore, expect authentic Punjabi meals, including special ‘thalis’. The restaurant, for many of its dishes, claims to practice slow cooking using wood and cow dung cakes for fuel, and it does show up in the taste.

“For the slow cooking effect, do try our mix dal, which includes a mixture of five different lentils. It is made in an earthen vessel. Aloo Wari is another speciality,” says Sahil Bhatnagar, the restaurant manager, who commenced his career at the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai as a management trainee.

If you order their lassi platter, you can taste six different kinds of lassi. The local lassi shops are the inspiration behind some of these. While others, such as the mango-berry and caramel flavours, are their own creations. Rang Punjab has also taken advantage of the local sharbat bazaar of the walled city since it also serves many sharbat drinks. The dessert list is also long, but one of the most unique experiences is litchi rasamalai. There’s also a small shopping corner inside, where one can buy many Amritsari foods such as papad, wadian, and even baked goods. Outside, there are many street food stalls put up by Rang Punjab.

The interior arrests one within a New York minute since it seems more than vintage. Old-fashioned fans from the old buildings of the capital also contribute richly. It has become the competitor of many old restaurants in Amritsar, including its two neighbours — Bharawan Da Dhaba and Brother’s Dhaba.

As you step in, nature suddenly stands before you, as it’s all wood and plants, which remain bathed in daylight and soothing vibes. The overall setting reminds you of Japan. It’s a perfect escape within the bustling Ranjeet Avenue’s D-Block market, which is on a high floor and also offers bird’s-eye views.

The menu is versatile, kept alive by many of its globally travelled chefs, who have given a front seat to many healthy choices, from vegan and whole wheat pancakes for breakfast to an array of salads and steamed vegetable bowls. The breakfast menu (American is their speciality) is always on, and its Granola Berry Yoghurt is highly ordered. You can also get your coffee crafted with almond or oat milk.

“For quality, we source many of our menu ingredients from different parts of the globe, such as our salmon, which is sourced from Norway, and avocados from New Zealand ,” says Gyan Deo Singh, its executive chef, who has headed kitchens in the Middle East and the USA, as well.

The healthy choices continue while picking the dessert too, as the list includes sugar-free and vegan ice cream flavours and also their very popular vegan carrot cake. But if sugar or dairy is not a concern for you, go for its Lotus Biscoff cake, inspired by the globally famous Biscoff biscuits, which are commonly served on many flights too. The bar menu also offers many non-alcoholic choices that are inspired by nature.

One of the most popular breakfast places: Sohan Di Hatti

Places to eat in Amritsar

If your travel mantra is to go where the locals go, the 60-year-old Sohan Di Hatti should be on your itinerary. From 9 am -1 pm, its customers sitting at its four tables are always busy ordering their ‘puri chole’, followed by a tall glass of lassi, which can also be ordered without sugar, with salt, jaggery powder, or simply plain. Located in Nimak Mandi Chowk, it also functions as a dairy and a traditional sweet shop. From 7 am to 2 pm, it also serves bowls of curd, asking customers, ‘Do you want it with sugar or jaggery powder?’

“In the coming months, we will also open a bigger place to eat, which will be just above our ground level.  We will also make our menu grander and more creative,” says Hardik Narang, one of the young co-owners who recently returned to manage Sohan Di Hatti after a long stint in the kitchens of five-star hotels in Delhi .

Where nature and food have the best meeting : The Bagh Gourmet Garden and Bar

Places to eat in Amritsar

Staying faithful to its name, which translates to the orchard in English, its guests often compare it with Bali or even Europe , which is built on a natural landscape, boasting an array of plants, trees, and a water body that snakes all around. Nestled within the Forest Resort on the Amritsar Bypass highway, it is spread across half an acre of land.

Here, it’s also common to spot many having quiet time with books or painting, considering the peace this place presents. One can choose to dine indoors in any of its four Indonesian-styled huts or alfresco under the rich shade of trees. There are also spots that are away from the public eye, in case you are one of those who don’t want to be seen. But even if you choose to sit inside, you will feel as if you are very much outside. Thanks to the floor-to-ceiling transparent glass walls.

As you begin to dine at one of the wooden tables, ordering from its multi-cuisine menu, from Asian to Italian delicacies, you may get reminded of some renowned luxury hotels. Don’t forget the pizza from its wood-fired oven and several other dishes, including the slow-cooked chicken, cooked on coal in an underground pit. One dessert that stands out here is Mexico’s very famous milky ‘Tres Leches’ cake.

For the essence of Punjab: Haveli

Places to eat in Amritsar

The sprawling Haveli restaurant, more like a resort, should be on your radar. It opened just some years ago. Sitting along the GT Road in Jandiala Guru, the first thing that arrests you about it is its old architecture and the many sculptures of traditionally dressed Punjabi men and women, some of whom also indulge in Bhangra and Giddha dances. While one can dine outdoors, do plan to dine inside, as every nook is inundated with art pieces and many original things from the rural kitchens and farms of Punjab.

A real truck is also parked inside, and just as you step out, walk through the village street here, a living museum, which is lined with old homes, schools, and a post office . The sculptors have done a great job of introducing the characters inside, be it children in punishment mode in school or a couple seen listening to the radio at home. And it’s not ticketed.

Coming to its food, it offers vegetarian food, but other than Punjabi cuisine, Chinese and Sou th Indian cuisine are also available . The menu is also loaded with many street food options, tons of appetisers, and traditional desserts. Their paneer dosa, idli -sambar, and paranthas fetch the most praise. They also have ‘thali’ choices. In the evening, puppet shows and local musicians make the air here very lively. Expect a long wait for a table during the weekends. They also have a smaller branch in the D -Block market in Ranjeet Avenue but its worth going to Jandiala Guru, which is about 25 minutes in a car from the city centre .

The most talked-about restaurant in a luxury hotel: The Chinese Room

Part of the seven-year-old Taj Swarna, opposite Basant Avenue on the Outer Ring Road, it takes one on an authentic culinary journey to China. After all, its kitchen team was trained by a chef from Hong Kong, who was with them even before the restaurant officially opened and stayed for three long years. His connection with the current executive chef, Aspan Singh, continues, whose ideas keep finding prominent space in the menu, featuring choices beyond Sichuan and Cantonese.

The interiors reflect gold and wood, with a high ceiling carrying China -inspired lamp chandeliers, like many elegant restaurants in Beijing and Shanghai. Sitting at the table, it’s fascinating to catch the chefs preparing the meals and readying the plates. “We are the only restaurant in Amritsar that serves Peking duck, and many locals since its opening have become our regular guests,” says Singh, who has been with the Taj group for 16 years.

It may be a Chinese place, but it has given equal importance to vegetarians. There are soups and appetisers like fried lotus stem, turnip cake, steamed shitake mushrooms, and main courses like steamed jasmine rice or noodles with tofu and vegetable curry. The servers pour complimentary jasmine tea into the traditional cup throughout the meal. For those who have a sweet tooth, apart from fried ice creams, do try their ‘Sultana pancake’, which comes filled with a fresh paste of dates and served warm with a scoop of vanilla on the side. There’s also a private al fresco dining space. Food festivals are common as well.

The most unique café: Mitti Café

Places to eat in Amritsar

It’s a café where your soul will also be touched, considering the sole intention behind it is to empower the mentally challenged youngsters, who will take your order with the help of their manager and then serve you on their own. A year and a half old, it sits on the floor below the ground level of the Mall of Amritsar on GT Road. Agosh Holding Hands (AHH) manages the café, the walls of which feature these special adults’ artwork and some of their pictures as well.

Seats about 10 guests, serves hot and cold beverages, and has a simple menu comprising sandwiches, pizzas, and pasta. A huge glass case holds assorted cakes and pastries, sourced from a local bakery.”It is the first such café in Punjab. Every customer who walks in absolutely contributes to boosting their confidence. It means a lot to them and us. We will also train them in the kitchen too,” shares Maninderjit Kaur, a social worker and manager of this café. Coffee and tea here are made in the same way as at home.

Spiritual food experience other than Golden Temple’s community kitchen: Gurudwara Toba Bhai Shalo

places to visit in amritsar for food

Every Sunday and on religious days, this historic gurudwara built long ago in memory of Bhai Shalo, an ardent follower of Guru Ram Das, serves a special meal (langar) of ‘chole/aloo-puri’ along with ‘dal’, prepared by a large team of young and old volunteers (sewadars). The gurudwara is not far from the Lohgarh Gate, where langar is prepared the traditional way using cow dung cakes and wood for fuel and it tastes heavenly.

What makes it an interesting affair is that cow dung cakes are donated by the devotees, which they buy from the many shops outside. Those from rural areas get their share from their homes, and these cakes have to be dropped directly in the kitchen.

“Here, you always have locals, mostly from rural areas or from the walled city . It’s absolutely a very local experience, which not many Amritsarians also know,” says Pratibha Malhotra Panghal, a photographer and a retired teacher from Amritsar. There’s also a small holy pond (Toba). Its water is used for bathing in the covered areas.

Post-bath (not obligatory), one proceeds towards the community kitchen, which is on the second floor, access to which is only through stairs. But if taking the stairs is arduous, volunteers will happily serve you langar on the ground floor too, where tea is served continuously. To make your experience richer, you can also volunteer with the locals in a range of services, from cleaning dishes to making dough for the puris, or lend your hand in the kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

– Are there any restaurants that serve Jain meals in Amritsar? Most vegetarian restaurants across the city serve Jain meals upon request. But some also offer Jain meal thalis, such as Brother’s Dhaba on Heritage Street, Haveli on Ranjeet Avenue, and Jandiala Guru.

– Where can one get the best fish and chicken in Amritsar? Though the most famous addresses are Makhan and Bira on Majitha Road and Bubby on Cooper Road, try the open food courts, which won’t disappoint. They open mainly in the evening hours until late at night. Some of these are located at Crystal Chowk, Ranjeet Avenue, Rani Ka Bagh, and Kabir Park.

– Which are the best lassi spots in Amritsar? There are lassi shops all over Amritsar, but the walled city is inundated with them. Giani Punjabi Lassi in Regent Chowk is the oldest and has appeared on several international travel shows. Ahuja Lassi in Dhab Khatikan and Rani Ka Bagh is also quite popular, especially for its Kesar-flavoured lassi.

– What are some of the best budget-friendly eating places? Apart from open food courts, try the canteens of Hindu temples, which are favourite of locals, not just because their menu is inexpensive but also because the quality of the food (Indian street food) is no less than that of many other famous restaurants. Their traditional sweets are also worth trying. There are many temples with canteens in both the walled city and the new city. These include the Durgiana Temple opposite Hathi Gate, Mata Ka Mandir in Model Town, Rani Ka Bagh, and Mandir Longewala on Heritage Street.

– Which are the most popular places for the best chaat, gol gappas , dahi bhalla , and aloo tikkis ? If you ask locals, two names stand out for sure: Brijwasi and Rajasthani, which have branches in several parts of the city. Lawrence Road is also very popular for this and many other street foods.

– Are there good bakeries in Amritsar? Yes, there are many but the oldest names are Popular on Queens Road and Bakewell on Cooper Road. They are also known for their quality. East Mohan Nagar’s Gupta Bakery, which also has a branch on Majitha Road, is also a good bakery. There are also many old-fashioned bakeries since the partition time here in the walled city.

– Is there a plane restaurant in Amritsar? There is one expected by the end of this year from a local family. Preparations to open it are in full swing, as a retired Air India plane arrived months ago at its location, near the Manawala Toll Tax Plaza. It will be a multi-cuisine restaurant and the first of its kind in Amritsar.

– Is there an interesting restaurant near the Wagha –Attari border? Yes, just minutes before the border. It’s called ‘Sarhad ’, where dishes from Lahore and Amritsar meet, but it is temporarily closed. It is expected to reopen by the end of September.

– Are food chain restaurants near the Golden Temple fully vegetarian? Yes, the list includes McDonald’s, Domino’s, and Subway, which are located on Heritage Street, just like other eating outlets on it. As per the local administration rule, no food outlet can serve non-vegetarian food on the street around the Golden Temple. This is to maintain religious sanctity. This applies to hotels on this street too.

– Can one volunteer in the community kitchen at Golden Temple? Yes, anyone can volunteer, and there are no permissions required. In fact, serving thousands of devotees every hour happens because of a large number of volunteers. One can serve food or even extend a hand in washing the dishes, peeling vegetables, or making chapatis.

– Are there any provisions for those who cannot sit on the floor, especially the elderly, at the Golden Temple’s community kitchen? Yes, there are benches for them, and volunteers will be more than happy to assist .

From the spicy, tangy chole (chickpea curry) to melt-in-your-mouth dal makhani, these unassuming spots offer authentic flavors that tell stories of Amritsar’s past and present.

Dining with Tradition and Innovation

Amritsar’s food scene brilliantly bridges tradition and innovation. New-age restaurants and cafes are reimagining classic dishes, infusing them with contemporary flavors and presentation without losing the essence of the original. Here’s what to eat in Amritsar

By Satarupa Paul

Heres what to eat in Amritsar

Nowhere perhaps is the love of rich, hearty and desi ghee-laden food more pronounced than in the holy city of Amritsar. You could say food is the second-biggest attraction here, after the Golden Temple.

In a city that has lent its name to iconic dishes, from kulchas to fish tikkas, and where scores of establishments do great imitations of the originals, deciding what to try and finding the best places to do so could be overwhelming. So, we've done the homework and rounded up with a list that'll tide you through the day or several. Take your pick.

Amritsari kulchas

The choice of breakfast in Amritsar also happens to be the most famous dish to be originated in the city—Amritsari kulcha. Stuffed with potato or cottage cheese and baked to a golden crisp in the tandoor, the hot kulchas are crumbled by hand until flaky and topped with a generous helping of desi ghee. Served with a side of chole and spicy chutney, kulchas are a must-have. While most spots serve this dish, Kulcha Land has some of the best. Operational since before the Partition in Lahore and later in Amritsar, Kulcha Land has been dishing out this delight for four generations now. Where: Kulcha Land, District Shopping Centre, Ranjit Avenue Cost: Rs45-70 per kulcha

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Chole puri and pinni

If you wish to try another Punjabi breakfast staple, head over to Kanha Sweets. The puris are fried in pure ghee, and served with chole and a tangy potato curry. They also serve pinnis to satiate your sweet cravings. Prepared with lentil and jaggery, pinnis are rich and delectable, and make for great gifts to take back home. Where: Kanha Sweets, Opp. BBK DAV College, Dayanand Nagar Cost: Approx Rs150

From mango to kesar, the lassi at Ahuja's, available in a variety of flavours, is an Amritsari favourite. The lassis here are so creamy and thick in texture that you often need a spoon to scoop it out. Oh, and even the lassis in Amritsar are served with a dollop of butter. Where: Ahuja Milk Bhandar, BK Dutt Gate, Dhab Khatikan, Katra Ahluwalia Cost: Rs40-60

Langar and karah prashad

Lunch time in Amritsar often means forming a beeline for the langar at the Sri Harmandir Sahib, or famously, the Golden Temple. The largest community kitchen in the world, the langar is open 24x7, and feeds over 80,000 people for free daily. The meals here are simple: roti, rice, a bowl of pulses and some kind of vegetables. The experience of eating with thousands of people is unlike any other. Also, don't miss the karah prashad here, a semolina halwa so rich that the ghee seeps out and drips along the length of your arm, if you do not eat it immediately.  Where: The Golden Temple, Atta Mandi, Katra Ahluwalia Cost: Free

Makki di roti and sarson da saag

A winter speciality, the smooth and ghee-soaked saag is made of mustard leaves fresh off the farm, and is served with wholesome corn-flour rotis at Bharawan da Dhaba. Located in the old town, which is a 10-minute walk from the Golden Temple, Bharawan da Dhaba has been around since 1912, and serves some great vegetarian fare. Where: Bharawan da Dhaba, Near Town Hall Cost: Rs170

If there's one eatery in Amritsar that rivals all others in popularity, it's the hole-in-the-wall Kesar da dhaba. Founded in 1916 in Sheikhupura, Pakistan, and then reopened in Amritsar after the Partition, this legendary dhaba has hosted the who's who of India, from Lala Lajpat Rai and Jawaharlal Nehru to Rajesh Khanna and Yash Chopra. The specialty here is the mah ki dal—a preparation of whole black gram lentils that is simmered for 12 hours and served with lachcha paratha or butter naan. Where: Kesar da Dhaba, Chowk Passian, Near Telephone Exchange Cost: Rs200

Amritsari fish tikka

Amritsar is not all about vegetarian food. The fish tikkas here are fresh, perfectly spiced and sprinkled with masala. Another must try here is the fried sangara (fried fish), enjoyed best with beer. Where: Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner, 21A, Near Madaan Hospital Makhan Chowk, Majitha Rd Cost: Rs500-800

Ghee roast chicken

A stone's throw from Makhan, Beera Chicken House is another must-visit for non-vegetarian food. The whiff of roasted chicken being basted with pure ghee lingers around even before you reach here. The ambience is spartan, but the taste of the ghee roasted chicken, with a texture so soft that it falls off the bones, will more than make up for it. Where: Beera Chicken House, Shop - 100 opposite Bhandari hospital, Majitha Rd Cost: Rs370 for a full plate

Mutton Chaap

Some of the best joints in Amritsar are decrepit structures tucked away from your sight. Adarsh, too, belongs to the same brigade. The long queues, though, are a giveaway. The wait is worth it, when you finally get your hands on a plate of their mutton chaap—slow cooked, shallow fried, spicy, tangy, and tender. Where: Adarsh Meat Shop, C Block, Ranjit Avenue Cost: Rs230

From the dish to the way it's put together, everything served at A-One Kulfa is a work of art. Kulfas, the ‘big brother' of the kulfi, are made with a layer of phirni, topped with scoops of kulfi and falooda, some gond (edible gum), and a dash of syrup and kewra (rose water). It is finished with some rabri. Where: A-One Kulfa, 3, Queens Rd, Crystal Chowk, INA Colony Cost: Rs50

An easy-to-miss rundown shop, Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala has only two things on its menu—gulab jamuns and jalebis. But it does such a good job with the both of them that you'll find it hard to choose. The jalebis, though, are a sure win. Fried piping hot in a wok full of desi ghee and dipped in a syrup that is just the right amount of sweet, the jalebis are a good way to end your culinary adventures. Where: Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala, Katra Ahluwalia, Amritsar Cost: Rs250/kg

This hole-in-the-wall eatery has a huge fan following, with a long line of Mercedes parked outside, waiting for their order. Where: C Block, Ranjit Avenue

6. All India Famous Amritsari Kulcha: For the city’s signature food

Amritsar is synonymous with crisp and flaky flatbread stuffed with mashed potato and a dollop of butter, popularly called Kulcha. Served with spicy chickpeas gravy and tamarind chutney, it is nothing short of gastronomic divinity.

You will find this delicacy in every nook and corner of the city, but the best place to sample the legendary Amritsari Kulcha is the 60-year-old All India Famous Amritsari Kulcha. This small inconspicuous shop might not look fancy, but it dishes out lip-smacking kulchas smeared with oodles of butter. Their speciality is a seven-layered kulcha with a stuffing of cauliflower, potato, and cottage cheese. Pair it with a cup of tea for an unforgettable experience.

dalm

The pride and delight non-vegetarian have over Butter Chicken is shared by vegetarians through Dal Makhani. Dal Makhani might sound like a simple dish made from lentil, has a profound history and legacy.

It is often said that Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken, two of the most savoured dishes in the Punjabi cuisine, was curated by one single person named Kundan Lal Gujral who was the founder of Moti Mahal chain of restaurants. Though Dal Makhani initially used to be made in the Western Part of Punjab which is now in Pakistan by the Peshawaris, this man revolutionised the humble dish and is the sole proprietor of the fact that Dal Makhani is now a well-known delicacy all over the globe.

There are many Dhabas in Amritsar which are known for its amazing Punjabi cuisine.

The following Dhabas are the places where you should definitely try out Dal Makhani and other dishes as well,

sar

This is not just a traditional dish of Punjab but also a seasonal dish and is best available during the winter season. This wholesome meal when consumed along with white butter or ghee, jaggery or honey provides all the essential nutrients the body requires during the winters.

If you are wondering what do the words of the dish mean and what the dish actually comprises, then let me tell you that Sarso means Mustard, Saag means lentils and Makki means corn, therefore its a corn flatbread and a lentil (mustard leaves) meal.

Sarson Da Saag & Makki Di Roti remains available in most of the above-mentioned restaurants and Dhabas but specifically, Bharawan da Dhaba is most famous and recommended for this winter delicacy .

Going to Amritsar and not indulging in Lassi is quite similar to visiting Santorini, Greece and not tasting wine. This yoghurt drink which originated in the lands of Punjab is filled with lots of love, good bacteria, malai and a lot of sugar is the most wanted refreshing drink during the hot summers not only in Amritsar but all across India.

Lassi is also considered to be an ancient smoothie and the first yoghurt smoothie in the world. Apart from the refreshing elements of the drink, Lassi is filled with Ayurvedic healing properties and provides a cooling and calming effect on the mind and body.

Here are the top 5 recommended places in Amritsar where you will get to taste the best made Lassi ,

  • New Munim Di Hatti
  • Surjan Singh Milk Bhandar

5. Guru Ka Langar & Kada Prasad

nmm

One of the major reasons for travellers visiting Amritsar is to visit The Golden Temple, the holiest place of the Sikh religion. Guru Ka Langar at The Golden Temple is a massive community feast prepared in the kitchen of the temple and feeds around 40,000 people every day. Here everyone comes together to sit down and share food.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a billionaire or a beggar, everyone is treated equally in the premises of The Golden Temple and also served equally by volunteers with equal respect. To sit at the Langar amidst people from different communities and walks of life along with the feeling that every human soul in this world is equal is a major experience to have in a lifetime.

The food served here is free of cost, simple and the most satisfying. It contains an unlimited serving of dal, roti and rice. Kada Prasad is the temple prasad served after devotees have visited the temple and it tastes so mouth-watering that it is ensured that you will keep coming back for more.

nnnnn

Amritsar, the land of foodies, has an amazing alternative to ice creams in the form of delicate and rich Kulfas. Kulfa is made with phirni, layered with badam pista kulfi and then topped with faluda, rabri, crushed ice, gun katira and then strewn with the mild essence of syrup and kewra also known as rooh kewra or rose water.

The most recommended place to have Kulfa in Amritsar is at A-One Kulfa located at Queens Road, Crystal Chowk, INA Colony.

7. Amritsari Fish

mjdjjjdj

Though Punjabi cuisine is known for its eminent variety of savoury Chicken dishes, Punjab geographically is the land of five rivers and therefore the abundance of high-quality freshwater fish mixed with the culinary talents of the people of this state has resulted in a dish made of fish which is as good as the other delicacies.

Amritsari Fish, locally known as Amritsari Macchi is a snack made out of gram flour batter and is served with a mouth-watering chutney made from mint and coriander. The secret ingredients that mark this dish as one of the best are carom seeds (ajwain), gram flour (besan) and the use of either singhara or sole fish. While the dish might look similar to Fish Pakoda, in reality, it is not so. Fish Pakoda and Amritsari Fish are not the same and the difference lies in their recipes.

Here are the top 4 places which are famous for making amazing Amritsari Macchi in Amritsar,

  • Makhan Chicken Corner, Lawrence Road, Amritsar
  • Bubby Fish & Chicken Corner

8. Butter Chicken

but

This dish of flavoursome pieces of chicken dipped in a soulful curry of butter, cream and other ingredients has come a long way and definitely is here to stay in the culinary palates all across the globe. Butter Chicken was an experimental making of Kundan Lal Gujral who hit the masterstroke by fitting right the taste of tangy tomatoes and other dairy elements along with crispy chicken pieces.

Butter Chicken has complimented many other famous delicacies like biriyani, naan bread and forms of rice dishes.

  • Sakhi’s Watz Kukin
  • Crystal Restaurant Plaza

9. Tandoori Chicken

tandoo

The word “Tandoori” is derived from a Persian word “tannur” which means fire and thus Tandoori Chicken is a dish consisting of moderate-sized pieces of chicken marinated in yoghurt, seasoned with the tandoori masala and other ingredients and then the chicken is cooked in a tandoor by placing it on skewers.

Punjab is a state which offers all varieties of dishes from spicy to sweet, and Amritsar has some of the best spots in India to try out Tandoori Chicken.

Some of the most well-reviewed places in Amritsar to gorge on Tandoori Chicken are

  • Beera Chicken House
  • Surjit Food Plaza
  • Makhan Chicken and Fish Corner

10. Nutri Kulcha

nutri

Unlike other forms of Kulchas in Amritsar, Nutri Kulcha has a different fan base in the city due to its nutrilicious taste and nutrients that is gulped down after having a platter full of Nutri Kulcha which is a dish made up of soft soya chunks and flatbreads. While visiting Amritsar do take a dig into this amazing local street food and is recommended to have it as a breakfast option.

Here are some places where you can try out Nutri Kulcha,

  • Jaan Nutri Kulcha

  • Ashok Nutri kulcha near DAV College

11. Gajar Ka Halwa

jak

Sweetness is in every corner of the city and is more found in its desserts. The variety of desserts available in Amritsar can make anyone feel like a happy child. Gajar Ka Halwa is one of the best sought after desserts amidst this whole world of sweetness which is a carrot-based dessert made from grated carrots, milk, ghee and sugar.

Gajar Ka Halwa is available in almost all the sweet shops in Amritsar and therefore becomes quite difficult to choose the best among them. This is a dessert which almost has a ubiquitous presence in almost all the major occasions and festivals in North India.

Among all the most recommended eatery would be at Novelty Sweets, Lawrence Road, Amritsar .

12. Besan Ladoo and Pinni

besan

Pinni is a classic traditional dessert in Amritsar made from desi ghee, jaggery, almonds, wheat flour and loads of love. It is considered to be a perfect winter dessert which is both healthy and nutritious. Pinni has a lot of varieties out of which Atte ki Pinni is considered to be the most common one. Pure desi ghee which is an essential element of Pinni is used to keep the body warm from within during cold winter months.

Another popular dessert is the Besan Laddo which does not fail to lure any individual. This mouth watering desert is made especially during festivals and consists of gram flour, ghee, cardamom and sugar.

For both the desserts we would recommend two famous sweet shops in Amritsar Bansal Sweets and Kanha Sweets.

Although there are many more amazing food choices in Amritsar, each of which are equally delectable, these top 12 foods remain unmissable and any traveller must try them to get the ultimate food experience from the culinary capital of India.

Yes truly. Some people miss out the aspect of food while travelling to Amritsar which is a must-have experience. Have you visited Amritsar?

A couple of times. Not recently and I believe it has been completely revamped

I visited last year, till then the main tourist spots I found to be quite revamped but otherwise the surroundings of the locations of the best eateries had an old city vibe. I wish to visit again to indulge in their food throughout my stay.

That was so interesting to read! I definitely want to try all of these dishes now! Thanks for sharing this part of the Indian culture 😍

Mouthwatering delicacies😋

Thanks for reading. Is there any specific dish that is your absolute favourite?

Honestly, I love too many of them, kulcha, the varieties of chicken, dal makhani😉

Yes, same here. There is hardly any dish not to love.

The problem is that I always gain too much weight in India, because the food is so good.

Haha. That’s quite a problem of many people. I would suggest to let it go and eat your heart out just for the days while you are India and then the necessary steps can be taken care of later on in order to reduce the weight.

I want to make a trip to India now, such a great post.

Thank you for reading our post. Please do visit when things get normal! 🙂

Butter chicken, dal makhani😋

Amritsar Street Food: A Golden Gastronomic Adventure

Heading to the city of the Golden Temple? Here’s a guide to the best Amritsar street food for all possible cravings.

Now if you know me, you know that it’s far from a secret that I love food. No matter the day or time, you better believe that a quest for some good eats isn’t too far from my mind.

And while I have my OG favorites (read: macaroni and cheese and desserts) I’ve always been a huge fan of North Indian food – though not so much of the bougie prices

Western restaurants serve it for. So you can imagine that being in India has been all types of epic on the food front – and epic it has! For the most part, that is…

I’ve savored chewy, buttery puris, a million and one sabji filled thalis, and more mango lassis than I’d swallowed in the past year combined.

But alas- something had been missing. As good (and damned cheap!) most of the food I’d eaten so far might have been, it lacked one of my favorite food groups: m e a t.

Until we arrived in Amritsar , that is.

Heading to Amritsar? here's a guide to the best street food guide in Amritsar- including where and what to eat in Amritsar, as well as where to stay in Amritsar. #Amritsar #India #Indiatraveltips #foodietravel

After nearly two months of having to pay overpriced rates or forego it altogether, the street food of Amritsar brought us back to India’s eats with a bang.

Suddenly, everything from juicy fried mutton chaaps to tangy, baked Amritsari Fish Tikka. The food streets I had so missed while exploring the mountains? Back and better than ever.

It’s well known around India that Punjabis have some incredible culinary traditions – and dang do they show out in the holy city of Amritsar! But what to eat … and where?

Here are some of the can’t-miss Amritsar street food (and best places to eat in Amritsar generally) for your next Amritsar Golden Temple trip.

Amritsar Street Food: The Ultimate Guide

Where to eat the best Amritsar street food

The absolute FIRST thing I did before we made our way to Amritsar was -unsurprisingly- compile a massive list of all the restaurants and Amritsar street food shops I wanted to visit.

If you’re just thinking about the Golden Temple when you hear this city’s name- please redirect your thoughts and get into feeding mode.

Whether you’re a backpacker or not, all these stops are well worth the visit.

Here are my recommendations for some MUST eat Amritsar food- including famous street food in Amritsar as well as random finds- complete with a map for your culinary convenience.

Here’s to hoping you don’t need to be rolled out of the city ;)

Your 24/7/365 Option For Street Food in Amritsar

Golden Temple in Amritsar

Golden Temple Langar

Amritsar is famous for its magnificent golden temple, and no “Amritsar food guide” is complete without a mention of its 24/7  Langar .

Come late, come early, come again and again: the Golden Temple’s kitchen never stops serving up a basic thali with raita.

And while it might not be the most mouthwatering dish on this list, it’s certainly got the most magical location and significance.

Best Breakfast in Amritsar

Amritsar street food kulcha and chole

All India Famous Amritsar Kulcha / Kulcha Land

No trip to Amritsar is complete without a taste of mouthwatering kulcha. Picture this: buttery, crispy tandoori naan but stuffed with a thin layer of aloo (potato) and topped with a drizzling of spices- complete with a rich salty serving of chole ( chickpeas ).

Kulcha can be found all throughout the city, but All India is famous- and rightfully so! It’s one of the most delectable eating places in Amritsar for sure.

You can also check out Kulcha Land- but keep in mind that both close for the day by 4:30PM, so Kulcha sadly isn’t a late-night option.

Price: 30 rupees per plate

Old and Famous Chacha Sweets

amritsar street food ladoos

Looking for some tasty snacks to get you through the morning- or afternoon? Do deep-fried savory ladoos and samosas crisped and spiced to perfection sound like a yummy treat?

Even if you’ve tried these bites before, Chacha’s was a random Amritsar street food find that blew away any past competition- plus it’s right near the Golden Temple!

It’s easy to fill up here for less than a dollar- every item is around 10-30 rupees (and should can be bought in bulk!)

Price : 30-100 rupees

amritsar street food petha in a bowl

Aman Petha Bhandar

After all the fried and buttery goodness.. petha is a different recommendation, but delicious none the less! Made of a firm yet gelatinous texture, this former fruit is bathed in oil and sugar, hardened, and concocted into various shapes for eating.

A sort of sweet ( but technically a fruit), petha is a delectable choice for any of your in-between meals hunger needs.

Aman and his family have been at this for decades- their shop caters to petha only unlike other methai shops- even more of a reason to pay him a visit!

Price : 10-100 rupees

Ahuja Milk Bhandar

Lassis… the ultimate Desi snack perfect for sweltering summer heat (or any weather for that matter.)

This Amritsar street food joint has been servin’ up delicious lassis topped with fat dabs of milk butter on top for the better part of the last century- and boy do they deserve all the notoriety they’ve earned.

As a dessert lover, this spot might just be the best food in Amritsar!

amritsar street food lassi

By this point, I’ve tasted hundreds of lassis and at the time of writing this, none have come close to the thickly-sweet goodness that can be found here.

Plus- they also have multiple flavors including mango and vanilla. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself making a return visit- Ahuja’s definitely serves up some of the best street food in Amritsar!

Price : 40 rupees

Unnamed Mango Shake Stand

mango shake stand amritsar street food

Sometimes you just need something sweet and cheap to quench your thirst- (and in my case, the spices) and this mango shake stand is just that.

For TEN rupees, you can enjoy the sweet mango-y goodness- ah, the magic of Amritsar street food.

With a price like that, I couldn’t NOT include it on here- plus it was situated on a busy food street in Amritsar that was home to numerous other tasty stalls. Drink up!

Price: 10 rupees

Gian di Lassi

lassi amritsar street food

Gian’s is a known competitor to Ahuja’s that serves up plain sweet lassis.

Thick, large and also sporting a large dollop of cream, Gian’s knows how to make a lassi.

Whether or not it’s better than Ahuja’s though is completely up to you… it’s definitely worth trying both to make the comparison!

Where to Find Street Food for Lunch in Amritsar

When you’re eating all day, time can get a little fuzzy. Breakfast foods can be eaten at dinner, desserts for breakfast… and vice versa! And while most lunch foods can be swapped with dinner, here’s some must-try street vibe for your midday meal.

Shinda Meat Corner

mutton chaap amritsar street food

This low-key spot is missing from Google Maps, but isn’t far from the Golden Temple- it’s right next to the “Old Telephone Exchange” in an Amritsar food market and neighbors the unnamed mango shake stand.

Here, spiced mutton meat is oiled and fried into crispy, palm-sized patties known as chaaps.

Shinda Meat Corner has been around for decades is a true example of Amritsar street food- but don’t expect a seating area or perfect hygiene. The taste though? Worth every green chutney-dipped bite.

Price : 80 rupees per chaap

Brijwasi Chaat Bhander

dahi bhalla at Brijwasi chat amritsar street food

Like a lot of other Amritsar street food standouts, Brijwasi has been around for years, serving up creamy dishes of dahi bhalla and crunchy golgappe to generations.

Prices were great, the service good, and the food flavorful. But If I were to go again, I’d recommend ordering the aloo tikki burger instead. Nevertheless, it’s still a great place to eat in Amritsar.

 Best Amritsar Food for Dinner

Stuffed yet? The answer is most definitely yes- but that doesn’t mean there’s not more to be eaten! These dinner joints serve up some of the best Amritsar food in the way of very tasty meats.

By this time, I was definitely wishing I could rent another stomach! Here’s some of the best places to eat non-veg in Amritsar:

Beera Chicken House

pieces of fish amrtisar food

Beera’s is known for its chicken… but what’s really worth coming here is the fish. Soft, juicy and lemony the Amritsari Fish Tikka is a must- but the fish fry is also worth a taste (though not quite as delicious, in my humble opinion).

This famous Amritsar food spot isn’t as cheap as your average street establishment, but for some of the best fish in Amritsar, it worth the splurge.

Price : 200-350 rupees depending on your choice of meat

Adarsh Meat Shop

mutton and kulcha amritsar street food plate

Juicy, melt-in-your-mouth mutton covered or fried in a spicy gravy stew. Or, perhaps, mutton tikka- no sauce added, and joined by a pancake-like bread softer than anything else you’ll find in the city.

Basically, here’s the deal:  if you’re a non-veg, you cannot NOT go to Adarsh’s. Don’t let modest exterior fool you: this is a true meaty paradise, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any other meat hub in Amritsar that compares.

It’s no surprise it’s one of the most famous eateries in Amritsar.

Price : 200-500 for a plate

Rehri Market Amritsar Food Street

aloo tikki burger amritsar street food

Ah, the magic of food streets. Where all culinary and munchies dreams can come true. I LOVE food markets, and Rehri Market is one food street in Amritsar where you can try a bunch of true Amritsar street food delicacies all in one go.

Piping hot south Indian dosas, air-filled puris, creamy ice-cream milkshakes, and rich aloo tikki burgers can all be found rubbing elbows here. This is definitely a spot to just eat everything. I know I did.

Price : 60-100 rupees

Where to Find Famous Street Food in Amritsar for Dessert

And now to the best part of any given day: d e s s e r t. While a lassi or some form methai (aka Indian sweets) will do, why not try an Amritsar street food specialty instead?

Ram Karan Cool-Spot

popcicle amritsar street food

While Ram’s looks like an unassuming street-cart parked near the sidewalk of a main road, don’t let first impressions fool ya’.

Think massive golas (popsicles), swollen over a real wooden stick and dipped in a gluttonous amount of sugary syrup- and some of the best street food in Amritsar!

man making snowcone

This place has been around for decades, and Ganesha now runs the family business. While the local fave is the masala-spiced khala, I recommend the lychee- or better yet, why don’t you try both?

Price: 40-60 rupees

Where to stay in Amritsar

As the home of the Golden Temple, Amritsar isn’t lacking in accommodation, but good value spots might be hard to gauge from booking sites.

After spending nearly a week there, I overwhelmingly recommend the Asha Guest House , which is definitely the best guesthouse in the city and in walking distance to the best street food of Amritsar.

Heading to Amritsar, India? here's a guide to the best street food guide in Amritsar- including where and what to eat in Amritsar, as well as where to stay in Amritsar. #Amritsar #India #Indiatraveltips #Indianfood

Asha’s is a 5-minute walk from the temple, central to most of the food spots, and is unbelievably backpacker-friendly at just 310 rupees a night- private bathroom included!

Map of Amritsar Street Food

Even though we gained more than a few pounds in Amritsar, there’s no doubt dozens of more lip-smacking Amritsar street food spots to be enjoyed- I love a good recommendation so definitely pop in the comments if you have one!

When you think of Amritsar , the first thing that will come to mind is The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Harmandir Sahib. Right after, the delectable Amritsar Food steals the show; it is the 'Culinary capital of India'.

In this city, the love for food goes beyond; usually, people eat to live, but Punjabis live to eat. Every aspect of life, from social events to spiritual gatherings and celebrations, revolves around the joy of eating in Amritsar. As the saying goes, ‘Jab Punjab aaye, toh Punjabi wangu khao.’ This sentiment rings true in every way.

Golden Temple has the largest kitchen in the world that's open 24*7 throughout the year and feeds more than 100,000 people every day for free. It is considered the best place to eat in Amritsar.

The food might seem simple with flatbread, rice, lentils, and vegetables, but it tastes great and fills you up. Eating there is fun too because you sit in a long line with many people. Also, remember to eat the Kada Prasad while you're there, as it is the world's tastiest halwa (sweet dish) made with lots of pure ghee, and once you have it, you will probably want more.

When it comes to Amritsar's food, it is not possible that we forget about its famous Amritsari Kulcha, which is the most preferred breakfast option for many. This Kulcha is filled with potatoes, cauliflower, paneer, and special spices and cooked in a tandoor (clay oven) with a lot of butter and ghee. People usually eat it with spicy Chole (chickpeas) and sliced onions. It's so delicious that you might not want to eat anything else so that you can savour the flavour in your mouth all day long.

The best place to eat in Amritsar is at Maqbool Kulcha shop , which is very popular in Amritsar, and another good place is Basant Avenue Boo Wale Kulchas . Chef Vikas Khanna recommends both of these locations.

The Golden Temple

The definitive top attraction in Amritsar is the Golden Temple, a two-story structure covered in real gold and surrounded by a 5.1-meter-deep manmade lake. But not merely a tourist site, this legendary religious shrine is one of the most sacred places in the world for Sikhs, many of whom make a pilgrimage to the temple at least once in their lifetimes.

To enter the Gurdwara complex, where the Golden Temple resides, you'll need to cover your hair, remove your shoes, and step through a small stream of running water to cleanse your feet. Then, you'll walk clockwise on the inlaid marble path that flanks the pool, as worshippers chant and bathe in the water.

Making your way to the glistening inner sanctum of the temple, where priests chant songs from the Guru Granth Sahib holy text, is just one of many things to do at the Golden Temple. This attraction is home to the world's largest community kitchen , welcoming anyone to sit on the floor and savor a free vegetarian meal with other visitors. It's mesmerizing to see hordes of volunteers chopping onions, peeling garlic, and cooking huge vats of lentils and roti for up to 100,000 diners every day.

You can also see a collection of holy Sikh weapons inside the Akal Takhat (a seat of power inside the Golden Temple complex) and learn more about Sikhism in the Golden Temple Interpretation Centre , tucked beneath the clock-tower entrance of the temple.

The Golden Temple is an inspiring place, and one that you can get personally involved with, if you wish. You can volunteer at the Golden Temple Kitchen , and bond with locals as you prepare lunch. You can also sleep at the Golden Temple in one of its pilgrim hostels for up to three nights. Sleeping here gives you easy access to the Golden Temple at sunrise–the best time of day to see the structure shine.

Wagah Border Ceremony

A 31-kilometer drive west from the city center of Amritsar will take you to the border of Pakistan , where a curious border-closing ceremony takes place at sunset every afternoon. Full of pomp and circumstance, the Beating Retreat Ceremony involves an ostentatious display of goose-stepping guards from the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers saluting each other, lowering and folding their flags, and closing the gates at the border.

The experience gives tourists (typically seated in a special VIP section , once they flash their foreign passport) the chance to see the stark differences between Pakistan and India. On the Pakistan side, you'll see men and women sitting separately in stadium-style seating, and the vibe is much more subdued.

On the Indian side, however, it's a patriotic party. Bollywood music blasts from speakers as women dance in the street, while those in the stands wave Indian flags.

While just 45-minutes long, the entire ceremony gives you enough memories for hours of storytelling back at home.

Partition Museum

The year 1947 was a big one for India. Not only was it the year that India gained its independence from Great Britain, it was also the year it split into the two different entities of India and Pakistan–an event known as the Partition of India.

Tourists in Amritsar can learn about this defining moment in history at the Partition Museum, the only institution in the world devoted entirely to Partition. It features a haunting collection of newspaper clippings, antique photographs, and oral histories with people who experienced the violence leading up to the separation of the two countries, and the resettling of refugees after the event. The experience will give you a deeper understanding of the source of rivalry between India and Pakistan.

On your way out of the museum, jot down a message on a green leaf and hang it on the Tree of Hope .

A plate of delicious Punjabi food

Punjabi cuisine has become known around the world for its spicy curries, pillowy breads, and tandoori-fired meats . If you're looking to indulge in this tradition of colorful feasts, there's no better place to do it than in Amritsar.

Bharawan Da Dhaba , located kitty-corner to the Partition Museum , whips up downright decadent Amritsari kulcha (mildly leavened flatbread) stuffed with Indian cheese or potatoes and served with spiced chickpeas.

Tear into the Punjabi breakfast staple of chole puri (puffy bread with chickpea curry) at Kanha Sweets , just a block away from the BBK DAV College for Women .

Dig into tandoori chicken from a decades-old recipe at the Beera Chicken House , across from the New Bhandari Hospital.

And if you've got a sweet tooth, treat yourself to piping-hot jalebi (deep-fried spirals of maida flour batter dunked in sugar syrup) at Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala , a hole-in-the-wall sweets shop just 400 meters away from the Golden Temple.

Mandir Mata Lal Devi

The Mandir Mata Lal Devi is as bizarre as the Golden Temple is elegant. Legend has it that this Hindu temple, dedicated to the female saint Lal Devi, can boost the fertility of women who visit. But to non-devotees, the labyrinthine attraction resembles a funhouse.

You'll wander down dark, narrow passages that lead to garish rooms covered in mirrored mosaics , walk through the open mouths of funhouse-style animal carvings , see giant wooden cobras, and crawl through a watery cave to the shrine of Lal Devi .

The entire experience will give you a new perspective on Hinduism and the ways devotees practice their spirituality. It'll also prove to be one of the most fun things to do in Amritsar.

Address: 61/62, Model Town, Rani Ka Bagh, Mohindra Colony, Amritsar

Jallianwala Bagh

Tucked behind the Golden Temple, tourists will find another important site in Amritsar: Jallianwala Bagh. The public garden memorializes the estimated 1,500 people who were killed or injured when British soldiers were ordered to fire on peaceful protesters who were demanding the release of imprisoned leaders of the Indian Independence Movement in 1919. You can still see bullet holes in the walls that hundreds of victims hid behind in attempt to dodge the gunfire.

The memorial site's Martyrs' Gallery displays the portraits of important figures of Indian independence. You can also check out a humbling exhibition on the victims and see an eternal flame .

Address: Golden Temple Road, Jallan Wala Bagh, Katra Ahluwalia, Amritsar

Baba Atal Tower

Often overshadowed by the neighboring Golden Temple, Baba Atal Tower is a worthwhile attraction in Amritsar in its own right. The structure is an architectural marvel, with nine octagonal stories stacked 40 meters high, making it one of the tallest structures in Amritsar.

Baba Atal Tower is dedicated to Atal Rai, the son of a Sikh guru. Legend has it that Atal Rai performed the miracle of bringing someone back from the dead, and then gave up his life in penance for the sin of interfering with God's work. The sightseeing opportunities from the top of the tower are some of the best in all of Amritsar.

Address: Clock Tower Building, Atta Mandi, Katra Ahluwalia, Amritsar

Ram Bagh Gardens

Looking for a serene escape from the hectic streets of Amritsar? Head to Ram Bagh Gardens, a sprawling public park. The green space brims with rare plants , flowers, and trees, and features refreshing water features filled with goldfish. You'll also find statues throughout the gardens, including a memorial for Ranjit Singh , leader of the Sikh Empire in the early 1800s.

At the center of the park, tourists can check out the historic Summer Palace. While significantly less elaborate than other palaces you'll find throughout India, the two-story, red-stone building offers a sense of place, with scalloped doorways, inlaid marble floors, and pretty balconies.

In the northwest corner of Ram Bagh Gardens, tourists will discover another prominent attraction: the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum And Panorama . This institution contains a collection of important artifacts to Sikh culture, including garments worn by warriors, antique coins, and beautiful works of art. Its most famous exhibit, though, is a multimedia diorama that depicts Maharaja Ranjit Singh's early life and greatest battles. Sound effects of battle cries bring the diorama to life.

Address: Mall Road, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Nagar, Ram Bagh, Amritsar

Khalsa College

Architecture buffs, make a point to visit Khalsa College on Grand Trunk Road in Amritsar. The historic educational institution doubles as a premier example of 19th-century Indo-Saracenic architecture, a mash-up of Western European aesthetics with the exuberance of Indian and Persian styles.

With elegant onion domes and scalloped archways, Khalsa College's palatial main building is impressive and has served as the setting of many Bollywood films . Spend some time wandering the tranquil campus and gardens, but keep in mind that the academic and administrative buildings are reserved exclusively for students and staff–this is still a working university, after all.

Gobindgarh Fort

More than 250 years old, the Gobindgarh Fort has become one of the most iconic symbols of Punjab. The heritage site hails from a time when the Indian subcontinent was divided into small principalities and ruled by kings. At one point, some 12,000 soldiers manned the fort to protect Amritsar from potential invaders.

In modern days, Gobindgarh Fort has transformed into an educational attraction dedicated to the history and culture of Amritsar. The complex contains four museums, including a Warfare Museum showcasing rare weapons, a Turban Museum explaining headgear from the region, and a Sikh Art Museum. Stick around after dark for the captivating light and sound shows projected on the fort's Colonial Bungalow.

Durgiana Temple

Take one look at Shri Durgiana Mandir ( Durgiana Temple ), and you might think you're seeing double. With its half gold, half marble facade, the domed structure looks almost identical to the Golden Temple–it's even housed in the center of a sacred lake.

While the two temples may not differ much in looks, they certainly have distinctive purposes. Durgiana Temple is a Hindu religious site, where devotees pay tribute to warrior goddess Durga; wealth goddess Laksmi; and Vishnu, the protector of the universe. The attraction is mostly visited by religious travelers, but even everyday tourists will appreciate the magnificence of the inlaid marble and spiritual atmosphere of the temple.

On your way inside, pay attention to the exquisite silver doors , depicting holy figures. The distinctive feature is responsible for Durgiana Temple's nickname as the Silver Temple.

Address: Shree Durgiana Tirath, O/S. Hathi Gate, Goal Bagh, Amritsar

Official site: https://www.durgianamandir.com/

Another popular thing to do in Amritsar is visit the Sri Ram Tirath Temple. Located about 12 kilometers west of the city center, this Hindu temple honors the birthplace of Lava and Kusha, the twin brothers of the hero of the Ramayana epic, Rama, and his wife Sita.

The star attraction of this temple complex is its idol of Valmiki , author of the Ramayana. Standing eight feet tall and plated in roughly 800 kilograms of gold, it's a sight to behold. You can also see a sacred water tank , a congregational hall with capacity for 5,000 devotees, a library of Sanskrit texts, and an enlightening museum .

Hot tip: The best time to visit the Sri Ram Tirath Temple is roughly two weeks after Diwali, during the attraction's annual five-day festival. It draws around 100,000 pilgrims, who take ritualistic baths in the water tank and light special lamps handmade from flour and ghee.

Scarves for sale in Amritsar

Step through Gandhi Gate to get a heavy dose of retail therapy at Hall Bazaar–the go-to place for souvenirs in Amritsar. Located in the heart of the city between the Golden Temple and the Partition Museum, this attraction is thought to be one of India's oldest markets. Its streets contain thousands of shops selling jewelry, textiles, tailored suits, electronics, and practically anything else you can imagine–at bargain prices, to boot!

If you get hungry during your shopping trip, check out the food stalls scattered throughout the market. Bade Bhai ka Brothers Dhaba has become a popular spot for tourists to sample Punjabi cuisine in a thali (a platter comprised of many different dishes). You can also enjoy fish fried to perfection at Pehelwan Amritsari Fish Shop or succulent curried meats at Bheeri Gali wali Dukan .

Khairuddin Mosque

While Amritsar is often associated with its Sikh residents, it's also home to Muslims, many of whom practice their religion at Khairuddin Mosque. Built by Muhammad Khairuddin roughly 150 years ago, this mosque is an impressive example of Islamic architecture. The stately green-and-white structure features three domes and four minarets, along with intricate artwork on its walls.

More than just a beautiful sight, Khairuddin Mosque is also an important historical attraction for its role in India's struggle for freedom. This is where Tootie-e-Hind, Shah Attaullah Bukhari, urged the Indian people to fight back against the British colonizers.

Tourist Places in Amritsar

What to see in Amritsar? For me Amritsar some years back, was mainly Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and the old markets for their delectable eateries and shopping options. But during my recent Amritsar sightseeing, I unraveled a different facet of this beautiful city that most people don’t know.

So dive in for this spiritual and patriotic journey colloquially called Ambarsar .

Golden Temple Amritsar

Amritsar’s visit is incomplete without paying homage to this holy shrine. Even though it is known by many names – Harmandir Sahib (God’s abode), Golden Temple , Darbar Sahib , or Swarn Mandir , Gurudwara Amritsar echoes the same feeling of spirituality, oneness, and peace. The temple built on the holy lake is one of the biggest spiritual centers of Sikhism and one of the most famous places in Amritsar. Built by the fifth Sikh Guru Sri Arjun Dev Ji , it welcomes people of all religions and of all strata with an open arm. The temple was later adorned with gold by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Gurudwara complex has 4 entrances in all four directions signifying that people from all walks and corners are welcome to this holy place.

Golden Temple places to see in Amritsar Travelmelodies

The sacred sanctum in the gurudwara has the holy Guru Granth Sahib (the religious scripture of Sikhism) that is prayed. You will see hymns from the book being sung the whole time. While exiting the path from the sanctum, there is a Sweet prasad that is given. (Don’t forget to take it with both hands joined. Taking it with only a single hand is a sign of disrespect.) Walk around the lake on the marble floor, or sit by the lake gazing at the reflection of the temple. The feeling of peace is something that can’t be expressed but only experienced. That’s the reason people from around the world keep returning to Golden Temple India.

You can’t leave the gurdwara by eating langar (free vegetarian meal) cooked in one of the world’s largest community kitchen s. Sit down with everyone and eat the humble meal. Devotees throng the Golden Temple during the major festivals of India like Baisakhi, Lohri, and Gurupurab.

Expert Tip: To avoid the crowd, and experience peace, try and visit early morning or late at night.

P.S. You need to remove your shoes and cover your head before entering the gurudwara. There are many hankies kept at the entrance that you can tie on your head for the visit and return it back on exiting. It is advisable to dress modestly while visiting.

Jallianwala Bagh

Right next to the Golden Temple is the Jallianwala Bagh, one of the historical places in Amritsar. Having etched a mark in history as one of the most brutal massacres in the world. On 13 April 1919, when the people gathered as a community on the occasion of Baisakhi, General Dyer of the British East India Company opened fire on the crowd unannounced killing nearly 400 people and wounding thousands including women and children.

jallianwala bagh memorial amritsar punjab india

At the entrance is a statue of Udham Singh and inside is a flame called ‘Amar Jyoti’ in honor of the martyrs. There are bullet wounds on the wall and the ‘Martyr’s Well‘ in which many people jumped to save themselves. This event acted as a catalyst for the struggle for Indian Independence. Visit the Jallianwala Bagh takes you down the memory and gives chills down the bone.

Timings: 6:30 am – 7:30 pm

Gobindgarh Fort

A historic fort that was built to protect the city from the invaders around 250 years ago has tales of valor, patriotism, and prosperity on every wall. Maharaja Ranjit Singh renamed this fort Gobindgarh Fort after the Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This was his fort that became a symbol of his rise and acted as a treasury of his weapons and treasure including the famous Kohinoor diamond.

A few years back, Amritsar Tourism opened the Gobindgarh Fort as a theme park to throw light on the history of Punjab and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. There are many cultural events showing the folk songs and dances of Punjab. The fort has many museums including the interesting ‘Pagdi Museum’ that displays the many styles of turbans. There are interesting shows including a 7-D show that takes you on a ride through Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s journey and a light and sound show in the evening.

It’s rightly called ‘The Center of Punjabiyat’.

Timings: 10 am – 10 pm (Some museums close at 7 pm and do not open on Monday)

Tickets: The tickets range from INR 199 to INR 358 depending on the shows added.

Partition Museum

India gained its independence in 1947. In one sense it was a happy feeling that we were free from British rule, a democratic country. But it brought a bigger pain along with it, the agony of the partition where around 1-2 million people lost their lives and around 15 million were displaced. The lives of people across the borders were turned upside down. The legacy will always have a lot of blood and pain that the people can’t forget. I have heard those stories from my grandmother with tears in her eyes. And I felt the same emotions when I visited the Partition Museum in Amritsar.

Partition Museum places to see in Amritsar India Travelmelodies

Partition Museum, located in the Town Hall in Amritsar was opened to the public in 2017 and added to the list of Amritsar attractions. It is a central repository of stories from people, artifacts, memoirs, personal belongings, letters, newspaper clippings and so much more that gives you a sneak peek into that painful era. I highly recommend everyone add this museum to their itinerary when visiting Amritsar and plan to spend at least 1 – 2 hrs exploring the treasure.

P.S. Taking pictures inside the museum is prohibited.

Insider Tip: The museum is just a few steps across from the Golden Temple and doesn’t have parking of its own. You need to park your car in the Golden Temple Parking.

Timings: 10 am to 6 pm (Tues to Sun), Closed on Mondays

Tickets: INR 20 (INR 10 ticket + INR 10 for Covid sanitation)

Durgiana Temple

Durgiana Temple or Laxmi Narayan Temple is a Hindu temple worshipping Goddess Durga along with other Hindu deities like Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of wealth), and Lord Vishnu. But its architecture and design will remind you of its similarities with the Golden Temple. The temple is built on a holy tank and has a domed-shaped design with a big golden dome on the top. The temple even has a Sanskrit school in its complex and runs free community meals (called langar) for the poor and needy.

Timings: 6 am – 10 pm

Local Street Food – Restaurants in Amritsar

Amritsar aside from being a holy city is also a food lover’s paradise. From the by-lanes of the old city, come wafting the aroma of lip-smacking food being cooked. Some of the must-visit dishes and places to eat in Amritsar are –

  • Bharawan da Dhaba (Brother’s Dhaba) – near Partition Museum. (must try thali, Sarson ka saag, Makki roti, and Amritsari Kulcha)
  • Kesar da Dhaba
  • Kulcha land (for Amritsari Kulcha that originated in this city)
  • Ahuja Milk Bhandar (for lassi. You got to finish your meal with a glass of lassi)
  • Kanha sweets (for poori with potato sabzi)
  • Amritsari fish fry

And besides this, there are many more things. It is said that ‘rivers of milk and curd flow in Punjab’ and it is so true. Enjoy scrumptious meals at every nook and corner cooked in desi ghee.

Shopping in Amritsar

What to buy in Amritsar? Let us help you with iconic Punjabi stuff that you should be buying from Amritsar. Thank us later. Stroll along the maze of lanes in the old city to shop for traditional Punjabi clothes and footwear. The Phulkari literally meaning ’flower work’ is the traditional embroidery work from Punjab that dates back to the 15th century. There are beautifully crafted Phulkari dupattas (bigger size stole), shawls, and ladies’ Phulkari suites that are a must-buy. Men wear colorful turbans which are sold all across the market. Besides clothes, flat belly footwear called Punjabi jutti is available for men, women, and even children. It gets confusing looking at the wide variety of these juttis with artistic threadwork on them. Threads in all colors, even gold, and silver along with sequins, and trinkets embellished on these leather sandals. I really love wearing them and just can’t do without them. Also, Amritsar is famous for its papad (thin crisp flatbread in many flavors that is roasted or fried) and wadiyan (sun-dried paste of pulses with spices). To balance the spicy taste on the tongue, buy Aam Papad (thin chewy fruit bars made from mango) from Ram Lubhaiya Aam Papad waale (for a variety of Aam Papad.)

Attari Railway Station

The last railway station in India en route to Pakistan is at the village of Attari around 25 km from Amritsar. The famed Samjhauta Express (‘Friendship Express) passes through Attari station. Since this is the last station before the border, there is a Customs and Immigration Department for those traveling between the two countries.

PS: When we visited, the station wore a deserted look as the trains had been suspended between the two countries.

Did you know Luv and Kush, the twins of Lord Ram and Mata Sita were born near Amritsar? Yes, we didn’t know that either. So when we heard of Ram Tirath, the place where they were born, we decided to pay a visit. One of the temples in the Ram Tirath complex dates back to the Ramayan period and this was the ashram of Sage Valmiki.

Ram Tirath is around a 20-minute drive from Amritsar. We were left spellbound by the beauty and serenity of this place. There is a beautiful temple dedicated to Sage Valmiki, in the middle of a holy lake. It is so peaceful inside with a beautiful chandelier hanging from the high ceiling.

In the complex, there are other temples including a temple of Goddess Sita and the hut where she lived and gave birth to Luv and Kush. They were educated and trained by Sage Valmiki himself. Walk around the complex and gaze at the huge statue of Lord Hanuman or sit on the steps by the lake and feel the gentle breeze.

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous without special glasses? Eye doctors explain.

By Sara Moniuszko

Edited By Allison Elyse Gualtieri

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 8:54 AM EDT / CBS News

The solar eclipse will be visible for millions of Americans on April 8, 2024, making many excited to see it — but how you watch it matters, since it can be dangerous for your eyes.

A  solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light . When the moon blocks some of the sun, it's a partial solar eclipse, but when moon lines up with the sun, blocking all of its light, a total solar eclipse occurs,  NASA explains . Either way, you need eye protection when viewing.

"The solar eclipse will be beautiful, so I hope that everyone experiences it — but they need to experience it in the right way," said Dr. Jason P. Brinton, an ophthalmologist and medical director at Brinton Vision in St. Louis.

Here's what to know to stay safe.

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous?

Looking at the sun — even when it's partially covered like during an eclipse — can cause eye damage.

There is no safe dose of solar ultraviolet rays or infrared radiation, said  Dr. Yehia Hashad , an ophthalmologist, retinal specialist and the chief medical officer at eye health company Bausch + Lomb.

"A very small dose could cause harm to some people," he said. "That's why we say the partial eclipse could also be damaging. And that's why we protect our eyes with the partial as well as with the full sun."

Some say that during a total eclipse, it's safe to view the brief period time when the moon completely blocks the sun without eye protection. But experts warn against it.

"Totality of the eclipse lasts only about 1 to 3 minutes based on geographic location, and bright sunlight suddenly can appear as the moon continues to move," notes an eclipse viewing guide published in JAMA , adding, "even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse" can temporarily or permanently damage your vision.

Do I need special glasses for eclipse viewing?

Yes.  Eclipse glasses are needed to protect your eyes if you want to look at the eclipse.

Regular sunglasses aren't protective enough for eclipse viewing — even if you stack more than one.

"There's no amount of sunglasses that people can put on that will make up for the filtering that the ISO standard filters and the eclipse glasses provide," Brinton said.

You also shouldn't look at the eclipse through a camera lens, phone, binoculars or telescope, according to NASA, even while wearing eclipse glasses. The solar rays can burn through the lens and cause serious eye injury.

Eclipse glasses must comply with the  ISO 12312-2 international safety standard , according to NASA, and should have an "ISO" label printed on them to show they comply. The American Astronomical Society  has a list  of approved solar viewers.

Can't find these, or they're sold out near you? You can also  make homemade viewers ,   which allow you to observe the eclipse indirectly — just don't accidentally look at the sun while using one.

How to keep kids safe during the solar eclipse

Since this eclipse is expected to occur around the time of dismissal for many schools across the country, it may be tempting for students to view it without the proper safety precautions while getting to and from their buses. That's why some school districts are  canceling classes early so kids can enjoy the event safely with their families.

Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, vitreoretinal surgeon at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at Mount Sinai, said parents should also be careful because it can be difficult for children to listen or keep solar eclipse glasses on.

"You want to actually, in my opinion, kind of avoid them even looking at the eclipse, if possible," he said. "Never look directly at the sun, always wear the right eclipse sunglasses if you are going to look at the sun and make sure that those are coming from a reliable source."

Brinton recommends everyone starts their eclipse "viewing" early, by looking at professional photos and videos of an eclipse online or visiting a local planetarium.

That way, you "have an idea of what to expect," he said.

He also recommends the foundation  Prevent Blindness , which has resources for families about eclipse safety.

What happens if you look at a solar eclipse without eclipse glasses?

While your eyes likely won't hurt in the moment if you look at the eclipse without protection, due to lowered brightness and where damage occurs in the eye, beware: The rays can still cause damage .

The harm may not be apparent immediately. Sometimes trouble starts to appear one to a few days following the event. It could affect just one or both eyes.

And while some will regain normal visual function, sometimes the damage is permanent.

"Often there will be some recovery of the vision in the first few months after it, but sometimes there is no recovery and sometimes there's a degree to which it is permanent," Brinton said.

How long do you have to look at the eclipse to damage your eyes?

Any amount of time looking at the eclipse without protection is too long, experts say.

"If someone briefly looks at the eclipse, if it's extremely brief, in some cases there won't be damage. But damage can happen even within a fraction of a second in some cases," Brinton said. He said he's had patients who have suffered from solar retinopathy, the official name for the condition.

Deobhakta treated a patient who watched the 2017 solar eclipse for 20 seconds without proper eye protection. She now has permanent damage in the shape of a crescent that interferes with her vision.

"The crescent that is burned into the retina, the patient sees as black in her visual field," he said. "The visual deficit that she has will never go away."

How to know if you've damaged your eyes from looking at the eclipse

Signs and symptoms of eye damage following an eclipse viewing include headaches, blurred vision, dark spots, changes to how you see color, lines and shapes.

Unfortunately, there isn't a treatment for solar retinopathy.

"Seeing an eye care professional to solidify the diagnosis and for education I think is reasonable," Brinton said, but added, "right now there is nothing that we do for this. Just wait and give it time and the body does tend to heal up a measure of it."

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse myths and rumors bubble up, from radiation to food poisoning.

Will a solar eclipse harm a pregnant woman's baby if she looks at it? Does an eclipse emit special radiation that can instantly blind you?

Those are some of the ideas people have been asking about — and that experts have been pooh-poohing — as people in North America anticipated seeing a total eclipse, from Mazatlán to Montreal.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Monday's total solar eclipse begins over Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, moving east through Texas and up to Maine, finally leaving the continent on Newfoundland's Atlantic coast.

Solar eclipses have long triggered fanciful explanations and warnings, from religious mythology to modern-day superstition. In recent days, for instance, a message circulated online warning people to turn off their cellphones and other devices before midnight ahead of the eclipse, warning of powerful radiation and cosmic rays.

In reality, a solar eclipse brings a temporary sharp drop in solar radiation — an event that ham radio operators have been eagerly anticipating for months, with competitions and experiments looking to fill the Earth's suddenly radiation-free ionosphere with radio signals.

Persistent but unfounded beliefs even prompted NASA to devote a special page to debunking misconceptions about a solar eclipse.

Total eclipses don't produce rays that cause blindness, NASA says

During totality, electromagnetic radiation from the sun's corona will not harm you. In fact, the only time it's safe to look at the sun without eye protection, as the sun's brightness is fully obscured by the moon and its corona is visible.

But outside of totality, your eyes can be harmed during an eclipse. If the sun is only partially obscured, looking at it will damage your retina. You can look if you have special solar glasses, but don't count on those to protect you if you want to use a telescope or camera lens that doesn't have a solar filter.

As NASA says , "the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury."

Another thing to remember: Take breaks if you're using a special filter to look at the sun before or after totality. As the space agency says , the sun's infrared radiation can make you uncomfortable, "as it literally warms the eye."

You should look away from the sun periodically, or use an indirect viewer like a pinhole projector to track the eclipse.

More things NASA says are NOT true about a total solar eclipse

Myth: if you are pregnant you should not watch an eclipse because it can harm your baby..

Another notion that seems to be rooted in concern about radiation. To put people's mind at ease, NASA employs a sort of "you're already soaking in it" example, citing the neutrino particles produced by the sun's nuclear fusion:

"Every second, your body is pelted by trillions of these neutrinos no matter if the sun is above or below the horizon. The only consequence is that every few minutes a few atoms in your body are transmuted into a different isotope by absorbing a neutrino. This is an entirely harmless effect and would not harm you, or if you are pregnant, the developing fetus."

MYTH: Eclipses will poison any food that is prepared during the event.

NASA gives a hypothetical: What if some bad potato salad makes people sick during an eclipse? Food poisoning is very common — and it shouldn't be blamed on a rare celestial event, the agency notes.

"The basic idea is that total solar eclipses are terrifying and their ghostly green coronae look frightening, so it is natural to want to make up fearful stories about them and look for coincidences among events around you."

Other myths have to do with omens and major events

Here are four that NASA singles out for debunking:

MYTH: Eclipses are harbingers of something very bad about to happen.

Myth: solar eclipses foretell major life changes and events about to happen., myth: solar eclipses are a sign of an exceptional celestial event taking place in time and space., myth: solar eclipses six months after your birthday, or on your birthday, are a sign of impending bad health..

NASA ascribes many of these ideas to astrological forecasts being propped up by confirmation bias.

As the agency says, "We tend to remember all the occasions when two things happened together, but forget all of the other times when they did not."

Other myths — such as the idea that the moon turns black during an eclipse, or that the Earth's two poles don't see eclipses — are simply false, the agency says.

Eclipses have deep spiritual meanings

Ideas about an eclipse's potentially powerful effects aren't new. In fact, solar eclipses do also cause some unusual things to happen .

Want to see how a solar eclipse alters colors? Wear red and green on Monday

Want to see how a solar eclipse alters colors? Wear red and green on Monday

People in totality can expect to feel a sudden drop in temperature, for instance. Stars and planets become visible in the middle of the day, and humans can experience a range of odd visual effects — from the sharpness of shadows to the movement of "shadow bands" and a change in how we perceive color.

Then there's the eerie effect of the eclipse moving from west to east, adding to the perception that time isn't moving in its normal path.

Many cultures and religions link eclipses to energy, seeing them as events of renewal and promise — or in some cases, of vital energy being drained away.

For the Ojibwe and other Indigenous peoples in the Great Lakes region, a story about a solar eclipse centers on a boy and his sister who trap the sun after it burns him.

In many folktales, magical animals try to eat the sun or the moon. In Hindu mythology, a serpent god, Rahu Ketu, wanted to eat the sun — but then his head was cut off. That created two new entities, Rahu and Ketu, according to the Folklife Today blog from the Library of Congress.

"These are the deities of eclipses and comets. Rahu is fixated on eating the sun and the moon, and will try to catch them and gobble them up," the blog notes. "Fortunately he only succeeds once in a while. Since his head was cut off, the sun or moon just falls out the hole where his neck used to be. This is an eclipse."

As Folklife Today notes, in many cultures, humans take up the duty of ending an eclipse, often by making noise and beating on drums or gongs to dispel the spirit that's attempting to take the sun.
