7 Things I Loved, Plus 4 Things I Didn’t During Princess’s Alaska Cruisetour

princess royal cruise to alaska

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Types of Travel

On my first morning after embarking on the Royal Princess Hamilton Cruise ship on a sea and land cruise from Vancouver through the Inside Passage of Alaska and up to Fairbanks, I sat on my portside balcony and watched the gray seas as the pale morning sun rose.

A sudden movement caught my eye, and the head of a humpback whale rose directly out of the water, suspended for a brief moment before it disappeared under the sea.

“Did I just see that?” I muttered sleepily to myself. As if to answer me, the telltale poof of water shot out of the sea, followed by the dark, subtle hump of the whale as he followed alongside our massive 1,083-foot long ship .

Instantly, I ran inside to wake my travel buddy, but by the time he got to the balcony, the whale was long gone. However, that whale sighting was a premonition of extraordinary adventures to come on the Princess Cruises’ 12-17 day Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour .

From luscious food choices and all-day entertainment to excursions and off-shore adventures through Alaska’s small coastal communities, the Alaska Cruisetour was probably one of the most fun trips I had taken all year. While I had my first cruise in January on a small excursion ship, I was invited and hosted by Princess Cruises to experience my first “big” cruise ship. For some reason, I had poo-pooed the idea of the big “floating city” cruise ships in the past, but the 12 days of sailing and traveling with Princess changed my mind.

I get it now. I get why people dream of cruises and just how easy it is to relax and just enjoy when you are being pampered, cared for, and catered to by a cruise ship company. Coming from the eyes of a brand-new cruiser (this won’t be my last cruise, I guarantee you), here are the seven things I loved — plus the four things I didn’t — during the Princess Alaska Cruisetour.

7 Things I Loved

1. medallion magnificant and the staff.

aboard Princess Cruise Line

The Royal Princess is a Princess MedallionClass™ ship with a capacity of 3,560 guests. The MedallionClass ships use touchless technologies in the form of a small, quarter-sized customizable Medallion and an app to enhance and personalize individual experiences and health protocols.

This thing is so cool. I had my Medallion customized with an astrological symbol and ordered the rubber wristband. While wearing it, the Medallion automatically unlocks and locks my stateroom door as I enter it, allows staff to find me anywhere on the ship to deliver my daily Bloody Mary, allows for touch-free boarding and purchases, let me find my travel companion on the ship, and more.

“So let’s say you’re out tanning by the pool and you want to get some extra sunscreen, you can go on the app on your phone and order sunscreen which will be purchased through the app and delivered to you where you are anywhere on the ship,” said Briana Latner, public relations and marketing for Princess Cruises. “We’ve also introduced ‘Dine My Way,’ which helps you make reservations in the main dining rooms and the specialty dining, helps get rid of wait times and helps you with your special preferences.”

Another feature of the Princess Medallion is the Ocean Compass, which allows you to locate and message your travel companions. Whomever you are traveling with is automatically named as travel companions in the app, but you can remove each other if you choose to.

“Sometimes there are kids who are teenagers. They can go off on their own, but you want to make sure you know where they are and they’re safe,” Latner said. “Many people who are traveling with parents or the elderly who may get disoriented find it’s been really helpful  to be able to find each other too.”

Touchless tech on Princess Cruises

Travel blogger Erin Cohen said the Medallion created a level of ease on her trip that shocked her.

“It makes you eat too much,” she laughed. “Everything comes to you at the snap of a finger or the touch of a button. The Medallion makes life almost too easy, but it’s great.”

Combined with the Princess Medallion, the staff on the boat is top-notch. Our stateroom was cleaned twice a day at least (the Medallion lets staff know when you are out of your room so they don’t disturb you), the bartenders all know your name and preferred drink, and every crewmember greets you with a cheerful hello.

Using the app and the Medallion was super convenient when it came to purchases, ordering, getting around, and more.

Pro Tip: Download the app before you embark on the cruise to upload safety and health documents, pre-book activities and dining, and get used to all the features. It’s a lot to learn. You can order the Medallion ahead of time and either have it sent to you prior to the cruise or you can pick it up upon embarkation.

Fun Fact: The Pacific Princess was the star ship in the 1977 television series called The Love Boat . That series also made the concept of a sea-going vacation popular with millions of people and has been widely credited with fueling the dramatic expansion of the cruise industry.

2. By Land And By Sea

Princess's own scenic rail car

The Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetours are a combo land and sea experience. In addition to a 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise that includes two glacier-viewing experiences and stops in the small Alaskan communities of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Whittier (Anchorage), you’ll also explore Alaska’s interior with a guided land exploration tour.

Once you’ve disembarked from the ship, you can spend 3 or more nights on land at the various Princess Wilderness Lodges , including the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, and the Fairbanks Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Princess Wilderness Lodge

These lodges are situated riverside near the legendary Denali National Park and Preserve, on the stunningly beautiful Kenai Peninsula, and in Fairbanks. Each lodge offers its own unique personality.

You will also travel by rail in a private Princess Cruises scenic railroad car and by tour bus to the various locations.

We were on the Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour , which offers the highest level of service with a dedicated tour director, the 7-day Voyages of the Glaciers cruise, 5-10 nights on land, travel on the Princess Alaska rail service, stays at Kenai Fjords National Park and Denali National Park , a Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (We saw three grizzly bears!), sightseeing opportunities, and most meals included.

What I loved about this option was the ability to see not only the glaciers and wonders of coastal Alaska along the Inside Passage, but a chance to explore the famed national parks of Alaska’s rugged and beautiful interior. It truly was the best of both worlds.

“You see pictures but to see it in person is just like, it’s hard to believe this is even real. The whole time I was in Alaska, I just kept saying it was like a movie set,” said Cohen.

3. All The Choices (And Unlimited Drinks)

fine dining on Princess Cruise Line

So maybe you are craving a pepperoni pizza while you lounge in one of the many hot tubs on the 16th-floor deck. Maybe one night, all you dream of is a big juicy steak with a Maine lobster tail. Maybe you want a lot of choices from the all-day buffet.

On the Royal Princess, the more than a dozen dining choices come in many different flavors, ranging from high-end steakhouse to Italian cuisine to sushi. Like many cruise ships, the Royal Princess has a buffet that features Asian, Indian, American, and Latino cuisine, as well as breakfast items, fresh fruit, a pastry bar, and more. On the fifth floor in the central Vista, a small deli is open 24/7 for the late night/early morning crowd.

The ship also has numerous bars, and because we were given the unlimited drinks option, we put those to good use. From the poolside bars to the cozy Wheelhouse Bar with its live music, you’ll not have to worry about finding the perfect cocktail or Alaska beer to sip on.

Although I dined at the fancy Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, the buffet was our go-to option most days due to the sheer variety of foods to choose from. Be warned, though: It’s easy to let your eyes be bigger than your stomach, and you can end up eating more than you planned because the food is just so tasty.

4. Lots Of Viewing Areas

Denali National Park and Preserve

The Alaska Cruisetour I was on started from Vancouver and sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage through some of the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen. With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in.

I loved all the decks and viewing areas on the Royal Princess. From our own private balcony to picture windows throughout the ship to expansive decks, the views just kept coming.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! I really regretted not bringing the pair I own. Trust me, you won’t regret taking them when the whales and otters make their appearance.

5. Performances And Special Programs

plenty to do and watch on Royal Princess's Cruisetour

You’ll never get bored on this Cruisetour. Starting as early as 6 a.m. every day, the Royal Princess has events, special programs, classes, naturalist talks, and fun activities. From morning stretching on the deck to art auctions and contests to game shows and line dancing classes, this ship doesn’t stop!

In addition to the hourly activities, excursions, and options during the day, The Royal Princess presents big musical shows, comedians, naturalist talks, and more in its expansive Princess Theatre. The smaller bars and venues feature live musicians and fun, silly game shows while the main Vista area of the fifth floor holds concerts and dance parties. The ship even has a disco, a hopping casino with slots and table games, a very large fitness area on the 17th deck, poolside movies, a pickleball court, a Discovery Camp for kids, and more.

Every day, a daily newsletter listing all the activities on the ship is delivered to your room, so it’s easy to find and choose what performances or classes you’d like to take part in. If you are bored at all on this ship, that’s on you! Seriously, you’ll have a hard time picking which fun activity to do.

6. Being Pampered

After days of hiking, exploring Alaska’s small communities, whale watching, dancing all night, and maybe having one too many cocktails, it’s nice to be pampered. The Royal Princess’ onboard Lotus Spa brings you to a place of peace and Zen with services like traditional massage, acupuncture, facials like the La Therapie HydraLift facial, couples massage, and Aroma Stone Therapy Massage.

After relaxing, cruisers can head to The Enclave , a getaway of thermal suites and a hydro-therapy pool with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets. Sweat out your worries at a Turkish-style steam bath, steam rooms, and dry saunas for purification and detoxification, then doze off on the heated stone beds or relaxing water beds.

Another pampering experience is Royal Princess’ The Sanctuary , an adult-only retreat on the top deck with private cabanas, food and drink, and al fresco massages. The “Serenity Stewards” are quietly efficient in delivering everything you need, from fresh mimosas to towels.

7. All The Excursions

With 12 days of adventure, it would be impossible for me to list all the land and sea excursions available through the Royal Princess Cruisetour. Thankfully, you’ll be able to find all the options through the Medallion app and with the onboard concierges.

For my excursions, I went out on a crab boat in Ketchikan to learn about crab harvesting and to stuff myself silly on Dungeness crab, roared up winding mountain trails on a UTV, spotted whales, climbed glaciers, kayaked pristine mountain glacial lakes, toured and spotted wildlife on a Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park and so much more.

The excursions range from the sedate and relaxing to the wild and extreme, so there’s a little bit of everything for anyone. You can see the list of available excursions here .

4 Things I Didn’t Love

1. prices of excursions.

Alaska is expensive. There’s no getting around that fact. Being able to enjoy the Alaska landscape on a guided excursion is going to cost you. Some of the most expensive excursions include flights on small planes and helicopters, but they tend to be the most popular as well, like the Denali Flightseeing tours and helicopter tours of surrounding glaciers.

You aren’t required to purchase excursions, however. If you’d rather explore the different ports on your own, you can do that too.

White Pass Rail in Skagway

2. Not Enough Time In Each Port Or Land Lodge

When you are cruising, you have a schedule to keep. You might fall in love with tiny little Skagway, but you only have a day in port. You may want to spend more time at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge with its cozy rooms and fireplaces, but you only have one night.

The fact that you do not have control over how long you can stay in any one place is certainly not Princess’ fault, but it is a bummer and a fact of life when cruising.

3. No Coffee In The Room

One of my biggest pet peeves in life is not having coffee available in my room when traveling. Yes, ordering coffee to the room was easy and the staff at Princess were on top of my caffeine addiction, but it would have been nice to have one of those little coffee makers tucked away so I could make my own coffee.

One great thing about the Royal Princess is the ability to order coffee and breakfast the night before. Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient.

4. Staffing Problems At The Lodges

Like so many other destinations, Alaska has a worker shortage. That desperate need for seasonal and long-term employees has led to some staffing issues at some of the lodges. While the Royal Princess ship boasts 1,346 crew members from more than 30 different countries, some of the lodges had problems filling spots, which led to slowdowns, some maintenance issues, and longer wait times.

My best advice is to stay patient with the destinations and with the staff that is working. Everyone is doing the best they can with less.

All in all, my first “big cruise” experience was stellar and has made me a believer! Hopefully, this won’t be my last cruise, and if you yearn for an easy, well-organized way to experience Alaska, the Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetour is the way to go.

Royal Princess in Alaska: What to Expect

By Kitty Ellas Mom , January 27, 2020 in Alaska

Cool Cruiser

Kitty Ellas Mom

I'm booked on the Royal from Vancouver to Whittier in June 2020.  I did this b/c I wanted to be part of a group that is going then so the ship and itinerary were not my choice if I wanted to go with the group.  My question is this:  I've read a lot about how the Royal is too big to dock at Juneau sometimes b/c of winds, when smaller ships are able to dock.  Also, this was an Inside Passage cruise when I booked it but now it seems the Royal is not going to do that because of size?  I read a comment on here somewhere about how they were barred from doing the Passage but I couldn't verify that elsewhere.  I see a little bit here and there about this but never an in depth discussion except for several articles that came out last spring about how pilots thought the Royal might not be a good fit for Alaska.  I would appreciate anyone's thoughts about this.  I read several trip reports from people who were unhappy that the Royal missed Juneau but I couldn't tell if that was a chronic problem or just one sailing.  I will not be changing to a different ship but I want to have a clear idea of what to expect.  I've planned my excursions so that I have some redundancy in what I'm going to do in Juneau---e.g. dog sledding (on land) in Juneau but also a tour in Skagway that includes the dog sled place in case I miss it in Juneau. This will be my first cruise so I don't think I'll know what I'm missing re: the Inside Passage.  I'm also a little worried about getting seasick when the ship departs Vancouver and goes around the island out to sea instead of inside.  Thank you for any advice.

The Royal goes around the outside of Vancouver Island because BC barred her from transiting Seymour Narrows.  This is more of a big deal if you’re southbound as you’re missing Johnstone Strait in daylight, which is a beautiful area.  I believe she only missed Juneau once or twice.  On the other hand, the weather was amazing last year - warm and sunny for the most part thru mid-August.  She has restrictions on wind speed and direction for docking in all the Alaska ports, not just Juneau.

Do all ships have restrictions on wind speed and direction or just this one?

5,000+ Club

We did a B2B on the Royal to Alaska last year.  The ship itself is beautiful.  We did have a few items that did not check our boxes:  no true Promenade to walk around the ship and lack of covered places for taking pictures should the weather get ugly --- these are personal preferences and do not apply to everyone.

We did leave Vancouver about an hour earlier than we have when cruising on other ships --- this was due to the tide --- no real impact on us.  As for sea sickness, we ALWAYS take Bonine the day prior to embarkation and take it throughout our cruise --- works well for us even when the seas get a little choppy.  If you need sea sickness help, suggest that you contact your physician to see what would work best for you.  We don't want to miss anything so we take precautions in advance.

We had two opportunities to visit Juneau (one northbound and one southbound) and did NOT miss our port.

Attached is a link that has a lot of chatter about the Royal to Alaska.

Alaska is a beautiful place with lots of scenery and memories to be made.  Try to go with no expectations and enjoy each moment as it unfolds.  We, as well as numerous others here on this board have been to Alaska multiple times.  No trip has ever been the same; there is always something new to explore just around the corner.  Relax and have a wonderful time.

martincath

Prior reported issues with Royal are primarily the fact that it is banned from using the Narrows, and that both Ketchikan and Skagway, as well as Juneau, have access issues (high winds in the latter two, angle of approach in the former).  Royal is the only ship that always approaches Ketchikan from the north even when sailing northward, but this adds even more sailing time to the trip due to the extra distance looping around Gravina Island on top of having to sail all the way around Vancouver Island.

Tides rarely have much to do with Royal's departure times - it can fit under Lions Gate bridge pretty much any time except at high tide, and the only other area where tides are a concern is the Narrows which it isn't allowed through. The one time the tide did actually genuinely delay departure was when there was a fuel spillage - port authority required the ship to be cleaned before it could leave and it got stuck waiting a couple of extra hours because it was high tide when the cleaning finished.

However Princess consistently blamed tides to cover up the fact the early departure is actually due to the longer route that has to be sailed because of Royal's lack of maneuverability - which is because they cheaped out building her, choosing not to use Azipods and then further cheaping-out on the props and rudders they installed.

In short, it's not too big to get through the Narrows or port in Ketchikan safely - significantly-larger vessels like Ovation of the Seas and NCLs Joy & Bliss (both of which ARE too big to fit under the Lions Gate except at the lowest of low tides) can do both because they have azipods - what it lacks is the ability to steer as well as those larger ships.

There's an interesting commentary from Heidi, who sailed BC coastal vessels for many years, on this thread from last year which goes into some detail of the comparative expectations of wind and current conditions that Royal can handle compared to smaller ships. In short, all three of Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau could have conditions where Royal would be unable to dock... but most other ships assigned here could handle another 10+ knots of wind and dock safely.

Basically, you're statistically more likely to miss a port - but since cruise season is summer, you're still going to be unlucky to do so even on Royal.

The actual report from the Alaskan pilots can be read in full here ; I'll be danged if I can find the statement about not being allowed to traverse the narrows by BC pilots, but they did confirm by July 9th on Twitter that Royal would not be going east of the Island in 2019...

4 hours ago, martincath said: Some more info, based on the five weeks I spent on the ship in Alaska last year:   Royal is the only ship that always approaches Ketchikan from the north even when sailing northward,  Actually, at the end of the season we approached Ketchikan from the south. I was surprised as earlier in the season we were approaching from the north. Doesn't mean that'll happen this year, though. Again, another late-in-the-season difference here. In May we didn't notice a bit of difference in the timing. During our August and September sailings we saw huge differences in the times we were leaving. On our southbound August and September voyages we had to leave Ketchikan hours earlier than planned to arrive back under the Lions Gate Bridge at midnight-ish. On our northbound August 31 voyage we had to leave Vancouver at 1 AM-ish and wound up in Ketchikan late. None had to do with the spill, either - that happened the day we disembarked the ship.   I'll be danged if I can find the statement about not being allowed to traverse the narrows by BC pilots, I addressed it here when I spoke to the Captain and 3rd officer during my Bridge visit in May: https://www.debsdays.com/2019/06/royal-princess-to-alaska-cruise-wrap-up.html  They obviously didn't get the expected clearance because in August and September we were still going around Vancouver Island.

Thanks for the 'from the ship' info.

Perhaps conditions just proved to be ideal for Ketchikan on your later trip, or perhaps the ship turned out not to be quite so much of a 'cow on rollerskates' as the simulations had feared. If the latter, I'd expect the normal northbound route to be used at the start of this season - and just maybe they'll even be allowed to use the Narrows this season too if they have proven to be more maneuverable in practise than on paper. For the sake of the folks booked this year, I hope this proves to be the case - or at the very least that Princess start informing the cruising public of the 'always outside the Island' route rather than acting surprised every single week and blaming the tide!

As to tides under the bridge here - local pilots confirmed that Royal has an air draft of 58 metres, Lions Gate offers 61 metres clearance, and they require a 2m safety gap to allow for traffic over bridge flexing it, temperature variations etc. Which means that there's a metre of spare clearance beyond normal tide levels. We did have some major water level variations last summer - early July and early August especially saw more extreme Spring tides than normal (enough that we were among the many folks driving the coast early to see shipwrecks and the like which are normally under water even at low tide).

Personally I feel that the biggest issue is not that the ship has maneuverability issues, but the deliberately-poor communication by Princess - even if we assume the most generous interpretation of the facts: that they were actually surprised when the AK & BC pilots raised issues and they were actively working to try and have those decisions re-visited and hoped to be able to resolve them before the end of the season... they could have told people about the changed route and chose not to. Also, there's no excuse for any genuine issues with bridge clearance - they knew exactly how tall their ship was and the clearance of Lions Gate, they knew their dates and tide timetables are readily available.

It's something that other ships have been dealing with seasons before Royal was dispatched, and even NCL - terrible at communication in general - managed to inform people many months ahead that their monster ships would be leaving harbour in the wee small hours (even if they didn't clarify what time they had to be on board until close to departure date). Further, the announcements I saw on these very boards from folks on roll calls who were given a heads-up usually just a few days before their cruises that they had to board early were based on a straight-up lie - they said nothing about tides impacting bridge clearance, they claimed it was tides in the Narrows to blame, despite the fact that the ship was not going to sail that route.

The almighty dollar was obviously their only concern - if the outside-the-Island route was announced, plus shorter stays in Ketchikan, at least some folks would have changed their cruises on Royal to another ship, possibly another line. I'm not saying that I'll never sail Princess again, but the deliberate obfuscation of what was happening - and very likely will happen again this season - was super weaselly so it's definitely lowered my opinion of them...

Someone pointed out to me that they did change the map of the cruise recently.  See how it says "Royal Princess route" and shows it going a different direction at first?  I think that means it's not going into the Inside Passage but I'm not 100% sure of what I'm seeing:

https://www.princess.com/cruise-search/details?voyageCode=A017

RE: less time in Ketchican, we're supposed to be there on our first port day from 6:30 am to 3 pm.  I have booked a ship's shore excursion to Totem Bight plus the Lumberjack show that goes from 7 am to noon.  I definitely want time to just walk around by myself however.  What happens if we have less time there?  Do the excursions get cancelled?  It's my 1st cruise so I don't know how these things go.  I would rather cancel the tours and just walk around if time were less.

It does look like they adjusted the route. Good for them for being transparent this year.

When we arrived late in Ketchikan the excursions were pushed back to later (or earlier, depending if we were going north or south) and some, because of the length of time needed, were cancelled. Here is the letter we received last year on the southbound voyage. (Click on "idahospud replied to a topic".) I didn't post the northbound letter. While the times for your voyage up will be completely different, it should give you an idea of what to expect if the port times are changed.

Just a reminder, though...most port times on the Royal Princess last year were not affected by the Lions Gate Bridge timing.

That is indeed a big improvement in transparency - hopefully any other issues will also see honesty instead of weaseling!

Related question:  I'm assuming that when people say "take a small ship to Alaska" they mean a much smaller ship than the Royal?  What is the definition of a large or small ship for Alaska?

That would be somewhat of a personal definition, and also require deciding whether you mean physical size (and within that, is overall mass the important thing to you? Length?) or passenger load but as a real ballpark categorization I'd lump Royal in the 'megaship' zone (anything that's 1,000+ feet long and 3000+ pax) and small ships to me are below 500 feet and 1,000 pax even though some of those still seem pretty darn big! Some folks might even class anything in the Panamax size (i.e. it fits through the original Panama Canal locks - some of these go well over 2,500pax) as 'small' these days! CruiseCritic 'best of' awards now have 4 size categories - read the winners over to see which ships fit in each, that's probably as much of a general consensus as you're going to get for 'small ship' sizes 😉

Given that you could be sailing on a <100pax vessel (Uncruise), luxury lines like Seabourn run <500 pax, 'lux-lite' lines like Azamara are generally <700, and even within the Princess fleet you have Pacific at ~700 pax any vessel as big as Royal is definitely large, relatively speaking... but her problems locally are not size -related (heavier, wider, longer, and more-pax vessels than her can go places she's not allowed to).

Basically it's not absolute size or how many other bodies are onboard, so much as 'how much accessible space is there per passenger - especially bits that they can enjoy the scenery from?' and 'can this ship safely navigate into all the ports?' - and on both of these fronts Royal does come up short compared to most other ships that sail Alaska... but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy yourself in port or see gorgeous scenery while sailing, and of course compared to smaller ships you'll have more dining & entertainment options.

I think there was overwhelming support over on the Princess forum recently for Pacific and Coral as best of the fleet for Alaska - mostly because they are on the smallest end of the fleet so have more deck space per passenger, have good covered viewing options that are not just your own balcony, and in the case of Coral it lacks some changes to the design that made Island Princess, it's sibling, less desirable (it now holds a couple hundred extra bodies, but didn't add any extra public space...)

I am on the Royal in August.  Just got notification that arrival in Vancouver is moved to 5:30 am from 7:30am and Ketchikan is now 9 to 5 vs 10 to 6.

botbien

We booked Royal for the southbound itinerary in early June. However, we are going to rebook our cruise to different dates due to a change in husband’s work schedules.

Knowing a potential issue with Royal (may miss a port), we will likely rebook with either Pacific or Coral.

How is the motion on Pacific?  We don’t get motion sickness, but that was Caribbean cruises. Alaska is different. We will try to book Coral, but the cabins we want may not be available (multiple cabins for a group of relatives).  Your inputs are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I never had any problems with motion on our Azamara cruise last summer (Pacific Princess is one of 8 ships that were originally the Renaissance cruiseline 'R Class' fleet - the others are mostly now Azamara/Oceania and still have the same layout, engines etc. so should handle identically - just varying degrees of fancy-schmancy upgrades to the interior fixtures & fittings).

If anything, Alaska is smoother sailing than the Caribbean in summer - Inside Passage routes especially - as we get the big summer storms that are common throughout the Caribbeans hurricane season way less often up in this corner of the Pacific. If you stick to a one-way cruise you will sail open waters for the first couple of days heading south, but as soon as you hit the first port it's then protected waters all the way to Vancouver (except Royal).

Thank you very much for your input.

What do you think of Grand?  Does this ship have the same issue that Royal has (too big for the inside passage)?

It seems Grand offers some of the amenities that Coral has. So in case we cannot book with Coral, we have Grand as an option for medium ship.

Your thoughts?

We are on the same route. Our options were limited, as we needed a tour that goes Southbound, to Vancouver or Seattle, and where we are around the 23rd on the ship. We are very dissapointed that the Royal now skips the Inside passage, I would have picked the other ship last year when we booked if I had known (we booked April 2019, just before everything was announced). My TA suggested that we write Princess, but even if they offer that we could step back from the booking I would not gain anything...flights, hotel, train are all booked and paid! I try hard not to let everything overshadow this, but its an important family trip where the cruise part alone costs us in the very high 4-digits, and I am not rich enough to spend this money lightly

Grand Princess is the first of the Grand Class ships - which includes Coral, so they are much more similar than different although Coral is I think now the only one that hasn't had changes made to add passenger cabins. The loss of the 'sticky out' Skywalkers at the top rear on Grand - nickname for this class was the 'shopping cart ships' because it looked like the handle of a shopping cart! - also reduced indoor public viewing space some. But we've spent enough trips on this class to still be happy to sail any of them - and the only Vancouver-based ship with a problem at the Narrows is Royal, so as long as you avoid that specific vessel you should always be sailing between Vancouver Island and the mainland, whether north or south, on any other ship.

very interesting they have this posted this way as the picture below is right off my online reservation and shows no deviation!  Ugh.  Well - it does still  transit part of the inside passage by looking at your posting - just not inside of vancouver island which would be alot of cruising at night - am I wrong?  I am still looking forward to it but questioning my choice of ship as our last 2 trips have been magical - hoping nothing get canceled.

image.png.6f446f0791c9e40ce4ff912e8d7aa80b.png

kruzyns4me, you're not imagining things:  I still see this same map when I look at my reservation, which is a different sailing date than yours.  I just checked and the same map you're showing is also on my reservation under "itinerary."  You see the alternate Royal route map on other parts of the Princess website.  I dislike that but at least am grateful for somewhat of a heads up.  I learned about it from a Facebook group about the cruise I'm on.  Someone noticed that if you look up the cruise as if you weren't booked on it you'd see this new map, with the dotted line that says "Royal Princess route," going on the other side of Vancouver Island.

https://www.princess.com/cruise-search/details?voyageCode=A019

The map on my itinerary for my June 7 roundtrip seattle does not even show the ports in the correct order. I have no faith in the accuracy of the map on the itinerary page.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise

An Alaskan cruise is unlike any cruise you’ve ever experienced. The joy is definitely in the journey as much as it is in the destination.

From breathtaking views from your own cruise ship balcony to exciting onboard entertainment, you will love every moment of your trip!

This cruise has been on our bucket list for years now and it lived up to every expectation.

My great aunt and uncle lived in Juneau for years and always talked about how the views in Alaska would take your breath away. I was so excited for the chance to finally see those views in person!

Keep reading to discover everything you need to know about taking a Royal Princess Alaska cruise!

*Disclosure: This post has been written in partnership with Princess Cruises. All opinions are our own.

What is the Princess MedallionClass?

The Princess MedallionClass is a free tool for all guests to help enhance your experience while on board.

After booking your cruise, you’ll want to download the Princess MedallionClass app onto your mobile device.

You can get started right away by uploading your travel documents and filling in your personal information to help streamline the embarkation process. It saved us so much time when boarding the ship!

Once you complete the Travel Checklist provided on the app, you will be OceanReady and can order your free Medallion to be sent to your home prior to your departure.

You also have the option to pick up the Medallion at the cruise port, but check-in will be expedited if you already have it before you arrive.

Once you arrive at the cruise terminal, you can proceed to the Green Lane if you are OceanReady. This will allow you to get onboard faster and start your vacation!

Princess Medallion

The Princess Medallion is a quarter-sized device that has truly revolutionized the cruising experience.

It is unique to Princess Cruises and you won’t find anything like it on other ships.

The Medallion comes with a free lanyard, or you can choose to purchase a wearable accessory once you are on board.

Some of the options include a necklace, bracelet, clip, or sports band. We loved the sports band!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Princess Medallion #simplywander

All of your information is stored in this little device that is waterproof, sand-proof, and sun-proof.

This is what you will scan when you are getting on and off the ship. It also has several other unique and helpful features.

Your Medallion is what you’ll use to unlock your stateroom door. It is completely touchless and will unlock your door as soon as you approach your room.

Your Medallion also has a location-based feature that acts as a tracker.

If you order a drink or a bite to eat from OceanNow on the Princess app, your server will be able to find you anywhere on the ship to deliver it to you.

We were up on the top deck and ordered a drink but decided to go down to the library to play Scrabble.

Instead of having to wait for our drink to get delivered, the server was able to find us 9 floors down in the library!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Princess Medallion #simplywander

There are also interactive screens, called ship portals, on each level by the elevators.

You can scan your Medallion at the portal and it will pull up a customized screen.

Here you can track your travel companions to see where they are hanging out at on the ship.

Our kids are older and enjoyed having some independence on the ship, so it gave me peace of mind to know where they were.

You can also play a variety of games on the portal with PlayOcean. There is even a digital scavenger hunt around the ship.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Princess MedallionClass #simplywander

PlayOcean is linked to your Medallion so that it keeps track of your score. It even shows the high scores on the ship so that you can compete with others.

Princess MedallionClass app

The MedallionClass app is also very helpful throughout your cruise.

Here you will find the JourneyView that lists all of the activities offered throughout each day.

It allows you to bookmark the ones you would like to attend so that you don’t miss a single event.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Best onboard entertainment #simplywander

The OceanCompass can be found on the app and will help you find your way around the ship. It also allows you to message or locate friends or family that you are traveling with.

You can even make dining reservations, order food, book excursions, and much more through the app.

What are the staterooms like on the Royal Princess cruise ship?

Each ship has several room options, including interior rooms, balcony rooms, deluxe balconies, mini-suites, and full-suites.

We booked the mini suite on board the Royal Princess , and it was so spacious and beautiful.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Mini-suite #simplywander

The 323-square-foot suite features a queen bed, or two twin beds, and a sitting area with a couch that converts to a sofa bed.

The bathroom is quite roomy with a full-sized bath and a massage shower head. It also has generous closet space, a desk, a mini fridge, and two flat-screen televisions.

Our favorite feature, however, is the balcony. My number one tip when taking a Princess Alaska cruise is to splurge for a room with a balcony.

There is nothing quite like waking up to the view of a glacier right outside your bedroom or enjoying a peaceful sunset all to yourself.

Each room on the Royal Princess cruise ship also features the Princess Luxury Bed.

These beds were designed with the help of a board-certified sleep expert and offer the ultimate comfort.

The scientifically engineered mattresses are topped with a two-inch pillow top, Jacquard-woven linens, fluffy duvets, and the most comfortable pillow you’ll ever sleep on.

I guarantee that you’ll get a good night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed every morning of your cruise!

The rooms are cleaned daily by the attentive staff, and the beds are turned down every evening. They will even set up the sofa bed and take it down each morning.

If you book a suite with the Reserve Collection, you’ll receive additional perks like access to the concierge lounge, premier dining benefits, priority embarking and disembarking, and so much more.

What is the food like on the Royal Princess cruise ship?

We were so impressed with the food on the Royal Princess! There are so many dining options to choose from, and all the food we tried was so fresh and delicious.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

The Horizon Court buffet features an endless array of fresh dishes from around the world. There are endless options that cater to all tastes. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The dining room is also lined with windows offering great ocean views.

If you want a quick meal on the outdoor deck, head to the Trident Grill for a burger.

Or grab a quick slice of pizza from Prego Pizzeria and a piña colada from the Mermaid’s Tail bar to enjoy poolside.

Our boys also made sure to get a soft-serve ice cream cone from Swirls Ice Cream Bar every day!

Alfredo’s is a cozy pizzeria that serves mouthwatering hand-tossed pizza.

It was even voted “Best Pizza at Sea” by USA Today .

The Royal Princess cruise ship has three main dining rooms, the Symphony, Allegro, and Concerto.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Allegro Dining Room #simplywander

Each evening you will find an extensive menu featuring a wide variety of international dishes made fresh daily. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Allegro Dining Room #simplywander

Reservations are recommended for the main dining rooms and can be done on the MedallionClass app.

There will be two evenings at sea that are designated as formal nights and it’s a fun excuse to dress up for dinner.

I loved seeing our boys all dressed up, even if they complained about wearing a tie!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

Afternoon tea is also held one of the days at sea.

You can order room service 24 hours a day at no extra charge. You can also have food delivered to you wherever you are on the ship through the MedallionClass app.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Room Service #simplywander

Is the specialty dining worth it on the Royal Princess?

In addition to the included dining options, there are also specialty restaurants that guests can choose to experience for an additional cover charge.

I would highly recommend making reservations for at least one of the specialty restaurants while at sea.

The elevated dining experience is sure to make your cruise even more memorable.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or just looking to make memories together as a family, a specialty dining experience is the perfect way to share that special love!

A few of our favorites include Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill steakhouse, Ocean Terrace seafood bar, and the Chef’s Table Lumiere dinner.

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria is a family-style restaurant that serves up the freshest authentic Italian cuisine.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

It was even voted as one of the “Best Cruise Ship Specialty Restaurants” at sea by USA Today .

Each dish is bursting with flavor, and the presentation is impeccable.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

Try one of their signature handmade pasta dishes, fresh seafood, or filet mignon. Be sure to save room for the dessert- the tiramisu will melt in your mouth!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

If you are seated by a window, you may even see a whale!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

We saw a whale twice during our dinner and it added an extra element of magic to our already memorable night.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

Another perk of booking a suite is that suite guests get the privilege of enjoying breakfast at Sabatini’s.

You have to order the Apple Cinnamon Brioche French Toast! The toast was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

Crown Grill

Crown Grill is a gourmet American steakhouse specializing in tender steaks right off the grill.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Crown Grill Steakhouse #simplywander

They are also part of Princess Cruise’s award-winning “North to Alaska” program that brings unique Alaskan experiences and fresh Alaskan seafood on board.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Crown Grill Steakhouse #simplywander

The menu features special dishes only found on the Princess Alaska cruises, such as Alaskan Crab Cakes and King Salmon.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Crown Grill Steakhouse #simplywander

I also highly recommend the Surf & Turf with an 8 oz filet mignon and 6-7 oz lobster tail.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Crown Grill Steakhouse #simplywander

Ocean Terrace

If you’re craving even more seafood, head to the sophisticated Ocean Terrace seafood bar.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar #simplywander

Here you will find the tastiest fresh sushi and sashimi.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar #simplywander

The menu is priced a la carte so you can order your favorite sushi rolls to enjoy while listening to the live music at the adjacent Crooner’s Bar.

Chef’s Table Lumiere

If you are celebrating a special event while at sea, I highly recommend reserving a seat at the Chef’s Table Lumiere.

It truly is a memorable dining experience. We enjoyed a nice date night onboard while our youngest had a great time hanging out at Camp Discovery.

The evening will start with champagne and hor d’oeuvres at the Wheelhouse Bar led by the Executive Sous Chef and the Director of Restaurant Operations.

You’ll then proceed to the kitchen where you’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the galley.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Chef's Table Lumiere #simplywander

It is fascinating to see what it takes for this amazing staff to prepare and serve over 15,000 dishes per day on the cruise ship!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Chef's Table Lumiere #simplywander

Then comes the main event. You’ll be escorted to a special table for an intimate culinary experience.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Chef's Table Lumiere #simplywander

The multi-course tasting dinner is specially created by the Executive Chef and is exclusive to this dining experience.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Chef's Table Lumiere #simplywander

Each dish is a show-stopper, both in flavor and presentation.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess | Room Service #simplywander

The Executive Chef will even come out between courses to share a little bit about his culinary creations.

Seating is limited for this event, so be sure to make a reservation as soon as you get on board if this is something you are interested in doing.

Gelato Shop

The Gelato Shop is located near the Piazza and is the best place to go for a sweet treat.

There is a nominal fee for their hand-scooped authentic Italian gelato.

However, if you upgrade to the Princess Plus package, you receive special perks like two free specialty desserts a day.

This includes the gourmet milkshakes from the Gelato Shop that are to die for! Of course, they are best enjoyed with a sunset view from your balcony.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Gelato Shop #simplywander

Other perks with the Princess Plus Package include WiFi, fitness classes, a beverage package, and more.

What kind of activities and entertainment are on board the Royal Princess cruise ship?

There is never a shortage of things to do on board the Royal Princess Alaska cruise!

Evening shows and entertainment

We were especially impressed with the evening shows.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Best onboard entertainment #simplywander

They featured comedians, magicians, and spectacular musical productions in the Princess Theater. Our family’s favorite was the comedian!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Best onboard entertainment #simplywander

And if you love karaoke, then head to the Vista Lounge!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Best onboard entertainment #simplywander

The Vista Lounge is also where they hold auditions for The Voice of the Ocean for those that would like to compete on the last night of the cruise.

In the evenings, head up to the top deck for the Movie Under the Stars event.

Here you can cuddle up under a blanket and enjoy popcorn and a movie on the big screen.

There are board games available at the library, or you can also cozy up with a good book.

“North to Alaska” events

The Royal Princess features entertainment and events that are unique to Alaska.

This includes having naturalists, park rangers, and even lumberjacks on board to give presentations.

One of our favorite Alaska-themed events was Puppies in the Piazza.

During the event, guests learn more about the history of dog sledding and even cuddle Alaskan Husky puppies!

There are a variety of other classes and events that are offered throughout the day. Check JourneyView on the app for a calendar of events.

Swimming pools, spa, and other amenities

If it’s a nice day, take a dip in the heated Fountain Pool or Plunge Pool found on the Lido Deck.

There are also several hot tubs to enjoy in the evenings or when it’s a little chilly outside.

Is an Alaskan cruise good for families?

The answer to this question is a resounding YES! A cruise is the perfect family vacation.

We have traveled all over the world as a family and my kids said that this was one of their favorite trips ever. It is the perfect way to create lasting memories together as a family!

It is such a great value, considering it includes all of your accommodations, food, entertainment, childcare, and transportation to a different port every day.

There is so much on board to keep everyone of all ages entertained.

Older kids will especially appreciate the freedom to roam around and enjoy the extra independence you won’t find on other vacations.

An Alaskan cruise will also give your kids the opportunity to experience nature and culture with so many amazing excursions available at the ports.

Camp Discovery is the designated kid and teen center onboard the Royal Princess cruise ship. You’ll find spaces geared for 3 different age groups.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

The Treehouse is for kids ages 3-7 years.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

The Lodge is for kids 8-12.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

And the Beach House is a teen hang-out for youth ages 13-17 years.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

They are packed with everything kids love including an air hockey table, Skee-ball, foosball, video and computer games, board games, movies, crafts, and more.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

The centers are run by the friendly staff and they have so many fun activities planned throughout the day.

Older kids sign themselves in and out with a parent’s permission, but younger kids will need to be signed in and out by a parent for safety reasons.

Parents will especially love being able to enjoy a date night with a quiet dinner and evening show while the kids are having fun at the center.

I will say that an Alaskan cruise is often considered to be geared more toward the older generation.

It is true that you won’t see as many kids onboard, but we also appreciated that there wasn’t the spring break party vibe that you find on many Caribbean cruises.

We still felt like there were plenty of things to do for families and our Alaskan cruise quickly became one of our most memorable family vacations!

Which Princess Alaska cruise is the best?

There are several different Princess Alaska Cruises to choose from so it may be hard to decide which one is best.

However, there are a few things you need to consider. Including, what port the cruise leaves from, the length of the cruise, and what ports the ship will stop at along the way.

The Princess Alaska cruises generally depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, BC so you’ll need to consider the cost of flights to either cruise terminal when choosing your trip.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Seattle #simplywander

You can also choose between a roundtrip cruise or a one-way southbound or northbound cruise.

If you book a one-way cruise, you will be able to experience more of Alaska as you cruise to Anchorage. However, you will also need to get a plane ticket in or out of Anchorage.

The length of the cruise varies from a short 4-day Sampler to a 14-day Grand Adventure. I would recommend a 7-day cruise, especially if it is your first time.

This will give you enough time to fully experience what Alaska has to offer, but it isn’t too long if you are worried about your sea legs.

When considering what ports you would like to visit, the must-see stops (especially on your first trip) are Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Best Alaskan cruise ports #simplywander

I would also highly recommend booking a cruise that spends a day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the best month to go on an Alaskan cruise? The Alaskan cruise season is relatively short from April-October. However, the best time to go is Mid-May to Mid-September when the weather is warmer and the whales start migrating back to Alaska. Just keep in mind that the weather is better in the summer months, but the rates and crowds are better in the spring and fall.
  • Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise? Yes. Even if you are a US citizen, you will still need a passport as every Alaskan cruise makes a stop in either Vancouver or Victoria, BC.
  • What should I pack for an Alaskan cruise? Even if you are visiting in the summer, you will want to dress in layers. I would recommend a lightweight puffer jacket that is easy to roll up and pack, as well as layers to wear underneath. You’ll want warm yet comfortable clothes to wear on the excursions. For the cruise ship, don’t forget a swimsuit and flip-flops if you plan to go in the pool or hot tub. You’ll also want to pack a few nice dresses or suits for the formal nights.
  • What is the average temperature on an Alaskan cruise? The average temperature in Alaska during late spring and early fall is in the 50s. During the summer months, the temperatures are generally in the 60s, so dress accordingly. Keep in mind that Alaska also experiences between 17-20 hours of daylight in the summer months.
  • When is the best time to see whales on an Alaskan cruise? Whales begin migrating back from Hawaii as early as April and stay in Alaska until as late as November. However, you will have the best chance of seeing whales from May-September.
  • Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaskan cruise? Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. However, it is possible to see the aurora borealis on a late September cruise if the conditions are right.

I hope this guide will help you to know what to expect on an Alaskan cruise onboard the Royal Princess. It is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences!

As a result of I’ve loved my Royal Caribbean cruises to Alaska a lot, I used to be curious as to how Princess would evaluate to Royal Caribbean’s Alaska choices.

Throughout my 7-night cruise, I in contrast the meals, cabins, leisure, service, and ship design of every cruise line to see how they stood aside from one another. Wouldn’t it be value crusing on Princess, a line that places a big concentrate on Alaska, or would I remorse not cruising on Royal Caribbean?

Right here’s what I discovered.

Table of Contents

I paid $2,494 for an inside cabin on the Royal Princess in the course of the peak season. It was barely costlier than my Royal Caribbean Alaska cruises.

IMG 0747

I at all times thought a cruise on Princess could be rather more costly than a Royal Caribbean cruise, however that was not the case.

My 7-night Alaska cruise on the Royal Princess got here out to $2,494, or $1,247 per visitor, as my sister joined me on this crusing. The cruise fare mirrored the worth of two adults in an inside cabin, and it included taxes, charges, and gratuities.

To place this value into perspective, right here’s what I paid for an inside cabin on my earlier Alaska cruises:

  • Ovation of the Seas (October 2021): $727 complete (finish of season and solo visitor)
  • Radiance of the Seas (August 2022): $1,118 (2 visitors and last-minute deal)
  • Quantum of the Seas (Could 2023): $1,856 (2 visitors)
  • Ovation of the Seas (June 2023): $2,182 (2 visitors)

Associated : What’s the least expensive month for an Alaska cruise?

My cruise departed on June 17, so it was proper at first of Alaska’s peak summer season season. So whereas it was the costliest of all my Alaska cruises, the worth might have been cheaper if I sailed within the shoulder season or discovered a last-minute deal.

I used to be shocked at how poorly my Princess cruise ship was designed for an Alaska itinerary in comparison with Royal Caribbean’s ships.

DSC04563

As a result of Princess is revered for his or her Alaska cruises, I used to be flabbergasted on the design and structure of the Royal Princess. It was, to be blunt, terribly designed for chilly climate.

I’ve sailed on three Royal Caribbean ships to Alaska: Radiance of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, and Ovation of the Seas. All three of those ships have been designed for chilly climate, with indoor swimming pools, lounges with massive home windows, and indoor actions like a sports activities courtroom and movie show.

Once I boarded the Royal Princess, I used to be shocked to seek out on the market have been no indoor pool areas on the ship. Moreover, there have been hardly any indoor lounges with home windows wanting towards the surface—most home windows in lounges regarded towards the promenade deck with views blocked by lifeboats.

DSC04595

Fortunately we had glorious climate for many of the cruise, so it was attainable to take a seat on the outside decks to observe Alaska’s surroundings. If we hadn’t, although, it will have been difficult to benefit from the views with out freezing or getting soaked within the rain.

Associated : The perfect time to go to Alaska

On my Royal Caribbean cruises to Alaska, I spend most of my time lounging within the adults-only Solarium, a climate-controlled house with huge floor-to-ceiling home windows in all instructions.

DSC00206 0 0

Different venues, just like the Two70 lounge with its 270 diploma window views, are a lot better designed for Alaska in comparison with the Royal Princess’ darkish, enclosed venues.

I couldn’t imagine the Royal Princess was constructed only a 12 months earlier than Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas. Though the Royal Princess had some fairly areas, it appeared years older than the revolutionary design and structure of Quantum of the Seas.

My cabin on the Royal Princess was higher than the cabins I’ve had on different Alaska cruises.

IMG 0621 0

Like most cruises, I booked an inside cabin on the Royal Princess, and it was one of the best cabin I’ve had on any Alaska cruise so far. Whereas I normally anticipate inside cabins to be extraordinarily small, I used to be impressed with not solely my cabin’s measurement, however its structure.

Most inside cabins on Royal Caribbean cruises are small and compact. On most of my Alaska cruises, my inside room has consisted of a mattress, a small chair or sofa, and a desk. All furnishings was positioned in the identical space and there was little strolling house across the room.

DSC01097 0 1

On my latest Quantum of the Seas cruise, I used to be fortunate sufficient to remain in an inside room constructed for 4 visitors. These inside rooms are larger than an ordinary inside cabin, but it surely nonetheless appeared small in comparison with the room I had on the Royal Princess.

Associated : I at all times keep in an inside cabin on a cruise ship. This is why I really like these rooms

My Royal Princess cabin had two separate areas within the room: a sleeping space and a closet/rest room house. The sleeping space had two twin beds, an enormous desk and self-importance space, drawers, nightstands, and a full-length mirror. It additionally had a big TV, and I used to be happy to seek out out that on-demand motion pictures got here at no further cost.

IMG 0627

Behind this a part of the cabin was a “walk-in closet” house that related to the lavatory. It was good to have this separate closet house because it allowed for straightforward altering when sharing a room, and it helped to separate the cabin into two areas.

IMG 0641 0

The one factor lacking within the room was an opulent chair or sofa—we needed to sit on both our beds or the small desk chair. Nonetheless, the room’s spacious structure made up for the shortage of a further seating space.

I beloved spending time in my inside cabin, one thing I nearly by no means really feel about different inside rooms.

Whereas meals is subjective, I most well-liked many of the meals on Royal Caribbean in comparison with Princess.

DSC04620

When studying on-line critiques about Princess earlier than my crusing, I heard implausible issues in regards to the cruise line’s meals. I used to be anticipating the meals to wow me, however that was not the case.

Meals is, after all, subjective, however I discovered that total, I most well-liked the meals on Royal Caribbean over Princess. I benefit from the themed delicacies menus every evening on Royal Caribbean’s Fundamental Eating Room menu, and their buffet is one of the best I’ve tried on any cruise line so far.

The Fundamental Eating Room on Princess tended to supply extra upscale dishes—oxtail soup and five-spice duck breast, to call a couple of. Though the dishes we did strive have been tasty, my sister and I hardly ever discovered the menus interesting, so we ended up on the buffet extra nights than not.

IMG 0904 0

The buffet on Princess supplied each customary American and worldwide choices, and whereas there was a variety of selection, I discovered the general high quality of meals to be larger at Royal Caribbean’s Windjammer buffet. The desserts, particularly, have been extraordinarily subpar on the buffet, a disappointment for my candy tooth!

DSC04557

That being stated, the ramen noodle station on the buffet was on par with what I might anticipate from a specialty restaurant on Royal Caribbean. The truth is, it was most likely one of the best meals I’ve ever had from a buffet on each land and sea.

IMG 0674 2

It was simple to see the place Princess allotted further funds in comparison with Royal Caribbean.

Though I discovered the meals to be total higher on Royal Caribbean, I seen a couple of methods the place Princess spent further on eating in comparison with the latter.

The buffet had a far wider vary of condiments and toppings, whether or not sriracha for Asian dishes or nutella for French toast.

The mushy serve ice cream machine, as one other instance, had a brand new taste every day along with vanilla. Through the week we loved banana, strawberry, pineapple, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream, they usually even had a toppings bar with sprinkles and chocolate sauce.

DSC04615

Royal Caribbean, then again, tends to solely supply chocolate and vanilla, and the ice cream station is just open for a brief portion of the day. On Princess, we may get pleasure from ice cream anytime from 11AM to 10PM.

One other plus was that Princess supplied complimentary room service, which was a pleasant perk in comparison with Royal Caribbean’s $7.95 room service cost.

Associated : Royal Caribbean room service information & ideas

Though we have been upset with the cruise line’s supposed deliver-to-anywhere function within the app (the meals nearly by no means got here), we managed to have a couple of orders delivered all through the cruise.

It was evident that Princess spent a little extra on these small touches, and it undoubtedly enhanced my eating expertise.

My Princess cruise shined in its Alaska-themed actions, though Royal Caribbean nonetheless gives extra to do total.

DSC04545

Princess runs a program referred to as North to Alaska throughout their Alaska itineraries, which is an enrichment program designed to immerse passengers within the Alaska expertise. It is a large promoting level for his or her Alaska cruises, and I used to be to see the way it in comparison with Royal Caribbean’s programming.

Unsurprisingly, Princess shined in its Alaska choices. Though Royal Caribbean might sometimes host Alaska-themed occasions on its itineraries, it’s nothing like what is obtainable on Princess.

Throughout our cruise, I attended a “Meet the Sled Canine” program, throughout which an Iditarod coach boarded the ship with sled canine puppies. After a quick presentation about these lively pups, passengers have been in a position to meet the puppies within the ship’s atrium.

DSC04495

Associated : Finest issues to do on an Alaska cruise

Along with the sled canine programming have been lectures on Alaska’s glaciers and wildlife together with kid-friendly actions like storytime with the ship’s mascot, Stanley the Bear. So far as meals goes, the buffet and Fundamental Eating Room put a concentrate on Alaskan delicacies in the course of the crusing, which was one other good contact.

IMG 20230619 121614

I used to be impressed by the North to Alaska programming, however I nonetheless discovered the exercise choices onboard restricted in contrast to what’s supplied on Royal Caribbean. It’s onerous to beat the actions supplied on a Royal Caribbean cruise, from browsing simulators to bumper automobiles, sushi courses, trivia, and recreation exhibits.

Whereas the Royal Princess nonetheless supplied every day actions, they weren’t as frequent or diversified in comparison with what I’ve skilled on Royal Caribbean.

I discovered the service on Princess to be satisfactory, but it surely lacked the household really feel of a Royal Caribbean cruise.

DSC04439

I used to be neither impressed nor unimpressed with the service on my Princess cruise. Don’t get me improper, I met some extremely pleasant crew employees, however at instances the service was undoubtedly missing.

Apart from our favourite ice cream attendants, who exclaimed “My girls are again!” at any time when my sister and I might get in line for a cone, and our welcoming stateroom attendant, I used to be upset with the extent of service onboard.

Many crew members didn’t seem completely satisfied to assist us with issues after they arose. And, after witnessing a couple of inpatient crew members within the buffet practically yell at passengers, I used to be too intimidated to ask questions on a selected dish if I didn’t know what it was.

DSC04498

Moreover, I missed listening to “Welcome Again!” after getting onboard after a port day, and I discovered myself lacking the service I’ve skilled on different cruises. Maybe I’m simply used to the over-the-top pleasant service on Royal Caribbean, however I used to be genuinely shocked with the extra stand-offish service on Princess.

Like meals, service is subjective, and one passenger’s expertise could possibly be totally different from one other. It’s solely attainable we simply encountered some crew members at a irritating time, and my expertise shouldn’t be a mirrored image of the hard-working crew as an entire.

Visiting Glacier Bay Nationwide Park was a spotlight of my Princess cruise, and this expertise will not be attainable on Royal Caribbean.

DSC04584

One main distinction between cruising to Alaska on Princess vs Royal Caribbean is visiting Glacier Bay Nationwide Park.

The first purpose I booked a cruise on the Royal Princess was to go to Glacier Bay Nationwide Park. Royal Caribbean doesn’t have the allow to enter the park, so sadly you can’t go to Glacier Bay on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Though you possibly can go to locations like Hubbard Glacier and Dawes Glacier with Royal Caribbean, I heard nice issues about Glacier Bay and was decided to test it out.

Associated : Hubbard Glacier vs Glacier Bay: which glacier is best to see on a cruise?

DSC04555

The nationwide park actually lived as much as the hype. I used to be awestruck by the glaciers within the park, particularly the 200 foot excessive Marjorie Glacier, which spans practically a mile huge. We spent the complete morning crusing across the park, visiting a number of glaciers proper after one another.

As a result of it was a nationwide park, park rangers got here onboard in the course of the day to supply details about the park and reply questions. I believed this was a particular contact because it allowed guests to be taught extra in regards to the vacation spot they have been visiting.

Visiting Glacier Bay was the spotlight of our time on the Royal Princess, though I wouldn’t essentially counsel reserving a Princess cruise over Royal Caribbean solely to go to Glacier Bay.

Royal Caribbean’s itineraries nonetheless go to spectacular locations, and some great benefits of a Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise nonetheless outweighed a go to to Glacier Bay.

I discovered leisure on Princess and Royal Caribbean to be comparable, and I wouldn’t select one line over the opposite for leisure.

IMG 0683

I don’t place a lot significance on leisure after I cruise, and honestly, I nearly by no means attend manufacturing exhibits. As a substitute, I are likely to favor reside music and different programming like recreation exhibits.

For the needs of this assessment, I dragged myself to some leisure exhibits, and boy am I glad I did!

I used to be pleasantly shocked with the standard of leisure exhibits on the Royal Princess. I noticed two manufacturing exhibits whereas there, every of which targeted on singing and dancing as a substitute of a conventional play.

The singers have been so proficient I couldn’t imagine they weren’t part of an opera on land. Despite the fact that I didn’t perceive the storyline of the productions (if there even was one), I might have watched the exhibits a number of instances simply to listen to the casts’ spectacular voices.

Stay music was ample across the ship as effectively, and I completely loved listening to a reside band play stress-free music throughout our ship’s sailaway from Skagway. I hadn’t seen any such elegant leisure throughout sailaway on a Royal Caribbean cruise, and it created a really magical ambiance whereas crusing by way of breathtaking surroundings.

DSC04517

Associated : 50 greatest Alaska cruise ideas

Royal Caribbean’s leisure, then again, is extra technologically-focused than the standard exhibits on the Royal Princess. On Royal Caribbean cruises you’ll discover ice-skating exhibits, excessive diving performances, drone exhibits, and technology-focused productions.

Though not all of those performances are discovered on ships crusing Alaska cruises, I nonetheless discover the leisure on Royal Caribbean’s Alaska itineraries to be extra forward-thinking than conventional.

General I loved my cruise on the Royal Princess, however I don’t suppose I might e-book one other Princess cruise over Royal Caribbean.

DSC04422

Regardless of the complaints listed above (it is a assessment, in spite of everything!), I loved my time on the Royal Princess. Whereas I didn’t love the ship’s design as an entire, I nonetheless preferred sure elements of the ship, together with the Outrigger’s Bar within the ship’s aft and the elegant, multi-story atrium.

Aside from the dozen ice cream cones I loved all through the week and the buffet’s delightfully spicy ramen station, I have never been daydreaming about any of the meals I had onboard. It’s not that something was inherently dangerous, however nothing blew my thoughts, both.

IMG 0891 1

The principle purpose I wouldn’t e-book a cruise on this ship once more over Royal Caribbean, although, lies within the lack of indoor viewing areas across the ship. Positive, I’m visiting Alaska, however that doesn’t imply I need to stand within the chilly for every week!

I admire the various quantity of indoor areas on Royal Caribbean’s ships to Alaska, whether or not the indoor pool or Viking Crown Lounge. There’s a clear connection to Alaska’s surroundings on a Royal Caribbean cruise, however you needed to deliberately search this out on my Princess cruise.

Associated : The perfect spot for sailaway on each Royal Caribbean cruise ship

DSC04516

Maybe I might have loved cruising on the Majestic Princess greater than the Royal Princess, as that ship has an indoor pool, however I nonetheless suppose it’s onerous to beat the design of one in all Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships with regards to Alaska.

I’m completely satisfied to have spent one other fun-filled week in Alaska, and to have skilled the state’s majesty with my sister. Visiting Glacier Bay was nothing wanting an exquisite expertise and it is one thing that’s unattainable on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

If there’s something I discovered final week on the Royal Princess, it’s that there’s a cruise line for each sort of traveler. Whereas I wouldn’t contemplate myself a Princess cruiser, I’ll nonetheless admit they put out a terrific product with their Alaska itineraries, even when it didn’t solely match my cruising model.

The best time to cruise to alaska in 2024.

Plan your bucket list adventure to explore the extraordinary beauty of the 49th state.

The Best Time to Cruise to Alaska

Alaska's astounding beauty and vast wilderness are unlike any other destination in the U.S. – and even in the world. While you can plan land-based trips to the state, many of Alaska's majestic snowcapped mountains, pristine forests, glacial waterways and abundant wildlife are in remote locations, only reachable by plane or by boat. That's just one of the many reasons why Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you're ready to stop dreaming and start planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land, here are tips on the best times to cruise Alaska.

Best Overall Time: Shoulder Seasons

Best time for warmer weather, best time for wildlife viewing, best time for salmon fishing, best time for the northern lights, best time for shore excursions.

View of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay from the side of a cruise ship.

If you want to score a deal and have fewer crowds, travel during the shoulder seasons: May and September. In these months, cruise fares are typically lower and ships are not as full, offering more cabin availability. However, with changes in the global climate bringing more moderate temperatures to Alaska, and the cruise season now extending into April and October, cruisers can also expect to find deals in April and October. There will be fewer sailings to choose from, but you may find lower pricing and avoid the peak-season crowds on the ship and in the ports.

In addition, select shore excursions may be available at a discount in the spring and fall. If you're planning on exploring Alaska on your own before or after your cruise, you'll also find cheaper hotel rates at the beginning or end of the cruise season.

Alaska's weather can change dramatically, especially the further north you go, no matter the month or season. While the weather may not be as predictable in April as in the middle of summer, Alaska can be beautiful in springtime with temperatures in the mid-40s, according to Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, an Alaska Native-owned port in Hoonah and a port of call in Southeast Alaska. Hickman says there are long stretches of sunny days and crisp, clear evenings, offering the opportunity for late-season viewing of the northern lights . He also adds that April is one of the favorite times of year for local Alaskans.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska in April, Norwegian Cruise Line has a few options, including weekly sailings on Norwegian Bliss beginning April 6. The line also offers Alaska itineraries through the end of October. Other lines sailing the extended season in Alaska in late April include Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise Line , UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions.

If you prefer to travel in the fall, early October temperatures are usually in the 50s, while the end of the month brings snow in the higher elevations. The days are longer and there are no crowds, so it may be an ideal time to visit if you're not interested in the summer outdoor experiences. Norwegian, Holland America and Seabourn Cruise Line offer sailings in October.

If you'd prefer warmer weather for your cruise, the summer season in Alaska runs from mid-May to mid-September. During that period, daytime temperatures typically range from 60 to 80 degrees, though they can drop into the 40s overnight. You can expect to have between 16 to 24 hours of daylight in the warmer season. May is considered the driest month, with around a 25% chance of precipitation, but the rain becomes more frequent throughout the summer.

Alaska.org, a website run by local Alaskans that provides travel information and recommendations, advises that the best time to visit in summer is from June 15 to July 15. This 30-day period is regarded as the peak season for warm, dry weather – and it's the perfect time for outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing and hiking. If you want to experience the most "midnight sun," plan to cruise a few weeks before or after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – which falls on June 20 in 2024.

Come September, the days are generally shorter, rainier and cooler – but not always. You might get lucky with some unseasonably warm days amid the beautiful fall foliage ; as a bonus, September also means no bugs and fewer crowds.

If you have school-age children, you'll probably need to travel midsummer, during peak season. However, if you're flexible on dates, there's really no bad time to visit this magical destination. Mountain peaks shrouded in clouds or misty days cruising Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in late April are as beautiful as sunny days hiking through Tongass National Forest or whale watching on an excursion out of Icy Strait Point in July.

Read: The Best Places to Visit in Alaska

Orca breaching in Seward, Alaska.

According to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, one of the top destinations on the Inside Passage itinerary, wildlife viewing is possible year-round, especially if you have your binoculars at hand. When you're not watching for turquoise ice calving in the bay from the glaciers, you might see humpback whales as long as 65 feet or black and brown bears up to 10 feet tall – as well as orcas, harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, sea lions, seabirds, and bald eagles soaring overhead. And that's just what you can view from the ship.

During cruises through the park, rangers board the ships to offer commentary and information about the marine and terrestrial wildlife. They also help spot whales or other animals along the way. One of the highlights while cruising slowly through the park is to go outside on the bow of the ship – or even out onto your veranda – to listen to the incredible silence of this otherworldly place. You may hear nothing at all, or perhaps you'll be treated to the sounds of birds in the distance or the swoosh from a whale's blowhole before it dives down below the water's surface.

It's possible to view certain animals and marine life throughout the year, according to Hickman. "Whale sightings are consistent from May through September, with fewer occurring in April and October as they migrate from or to Hawaii for the winter," he says, adding: "Even on a foggy day when you can't see the whales, you can still hear them and feel their presence – and that's almost as incredible as seeing them from a ship or along the coastline."

If you're interested in spotting brown bears, here is Hickman's advice: "Bear sightings in the spring will depend on the snowpack and when they are leaving hibernation. This year we had very good bear viewing along the Spasski River starting in May when the coastal brown bears emerged from hibernation."

He adds, "They feed on the grass of the valley and eat skunk cabbage roots in May and early June. As the berries start to emerge in June, it holds many of the same bears, and as we get into mid-July, the salmon start heading upstream. There is a constant food source from May through September at Spasski. Many of the other bear viewing areas do not have the same features we have, and it leads to people thinking that bears are only around when fish are in the rivers."

Chichagof Island – the location of Hoonah and Icy Strait Point – was given the nickname "Bear Island" by National Geographic. The island boasts one to two brown bears per square mile, making it one of the largest brown bear populations in the world. Hickman says you're nearly guaranteed to see bears on one of Icy Strait Point's bear-watching tours. Icy Point Strait also offers whale watching adventures and other treks into the wilderness.

Alaska.org points to May through September as the best time for wildlife viewing, though you can spot some animals year-round, like moose or orcas. The website also advises that fly-in bear viewing starts in May but is at its best in July.

If you are an avid angler – or just want to watch the bears fish for their supper – then visit Alaska during the peak salmon runs, from May to September. King salmon season begins in May and goes through the end of July. The silver salmon run lasts from July up until the end of November. Red salmon are available between mid-June and mid-August, while you can catch pink and chum salmon in the brief window from mid-July to mid-August.

If you prefer halibut or just want to get out on the ocean, the best time for this wild Pacific species is from May to September. You can also seek out many other river and ocean species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char and northern pike. Cruise lines offer fishing excursions, or you can arrange for a private or group charter in an Alaskan town like Ketchikan.

If you want to see brown bears during the salmon run, book a bear-viewing excursion in one of the ports, such as Icy Strait Point. Or, extend your trip by combining a visit to Katmai National Park and Preserve and the renowned Brooks River with a stay at Brooks Lodge. Brooks Falls is the site for iconic photos of bears catching salmon that are jumping over the falls, and you may be able to view the bears feasting in salmon season when the property is open, from June through mid-September. The lodge is accessible by floatplane from King Salmon. You can also add a flyover tour during your stay to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area in southern Alaska transformed by ash from the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption.

Northern lights above Alaskan mountains.

Aurora season – the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska – runs from mid-August to mid-April. While some passengers cruising the Inside Passage may catch a glimpse of the phenomenon in late summer and early fall, it's not guaranteed. As southeast Alaska typically has more precipitation and clouds since it's a temperate rainforest, you likely won't find optimal conditions for aurora viewing here.

Your chances to see the lights are better the further north you go, so you may want to look at booking a cruisetour: a land and sea package that's usually offered by some of the major cruise lines from May through September. These combined trips generally include the cruise, overnight accommodations in lodges, railway journeys and motorcoach travel between destinations.

With these tours, you'll be able to visit the vast landscape of Alaska, where you can explore cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks or spend time in Denali National Park and Preserve – and you'll have a better chance to view the northern lights. Lines that offer cruisetours include Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises , Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Since 2024 is projected to be one of the best years to view the aurora borealis in Alaska, you might want to extend your trip to venture above the Arctic Circle or into Alaska's interior for a prime viewing opportunity. Fairbanks and the Arctic region are under the auroral oval, which is where the northern lights activity is concentrated. You can watch the forecast for the aurora borealis online at Explore Fairbanks' Aurora Tracker and the Geophysical Institute's Aurora Forecast .

Aerial of Ketchikan, Alaska, on a sunny day.

Some of the excursions offered on an Alaskan cruise may be the most expensive tours you've seen on a ship, but they're also probably some of the coolest things you've ever thought about doing while on vacation.

Note that the probability of a tour being canceled for weather is almost the same for all tours offered between April and October, as the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. Some of the more extreme tours, however, may not be available early or late in the season. If you want the best chance for optimal weather, consider the advice from Alaska.org and book your cruise between mid-June and mid-July.

If you're looking at splurging on a bucket list adventure while in Skagway – like Alaska Shore Tours' flightseeing helicopter adventure, which includes a dog-sledding experience on a glacier – you should check to make sure it's available the month you'll be cruising. This particular tour may not be open for booking before May or after September due to the conditions for the sled dogs.

Another over-the-top excursion dependent on optimal weather conditions is the Heli-Hike and Rail Adventure that begins in Skagway. This tour includes a helicopter ride from town that flies over glaciers and mountains, then drops you off for a roughly 5-mile guided hike to view Laughton Glacier and learn about the natural history of the area. After the hike, you'll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad at Glacier Station for the scenic journey through the mountains back to Skagway.

If you're interested in the Misty Fjords Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan, this thrilling ride is also best on a clear day. This Alaskan bush plane tour soars over the Misty Fjords National Monument, which has more than 2 million acres of pristine lakes, waterfalls, ancient forests and snowcapped mountains.

Tours that include activities like mountain climbing or navigating suspension bridges might also be best when done on a sunny day. The prime time for wildlife viewing and fishing, as mentioned above, will depend on what animals you're interested in seeing and which species of fish you want to catch.

The ship's excursion desk, local guides or tour providers can offer the best advice on how to plan your activities. No matter which tours you opt to take, be prepared for the ever-changing weather patterns by wearing layers – and make sure to bring a waterproof rain jacket. Before booking, you should check the individual tour operator's cancellation and refund policy.

The Bottom Line

Cruise ships dock in Skagway, Alaska.

If you're flexible as to when you can travel to Alaska, you may be able to take advantage of lower pricing, travel incentives and added perks in the shoulder seasons – and you'll have fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.

If your goal is to view wildlife, then most of the cruise season, especially from May to September, will offer ample opportunities to see bears, humpbacks whales, bald eagles and other amazing animals – depending on the itinerary and excursions you choose. You'll also be able to catch Alaska's prized salmon throughout much of the cruise season.

And if extreme adventures are going to be the highlight of your vacation, then be sure to check with the tour providers to make sure your top picks are offered when you're planning to travel. Not all tour providers operate the full seven months of the season.

No matter when you decide to visit, a cruise to The Great Land will be one of the most memorable vacations of your lifetime.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

Nearly 200 people sick in norovirus outbreaks on Princess, Royal Caribbean ships

Nearly 200 people got sick in norovirus outbreaks on Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International ships.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 94 of the 2,532 guests on Sapphire Princess reported being ill during its April 5 cruise, along with 20 crew members. The round-trip cruise, which left from Los Angeles with stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific, will end on May 7, according to CruiseMapper .

On Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas, 67 of its 1,993 guests reported being ill in addition to two crew members during a cruise that ended April 22, according to the CDC . The two-week voyage sailed from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles with stops in countries like Colombia and Panama, according to CruiseMapper .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

In both outbreaks, the guests and crew members’ main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Princess, Royal Caribbean and the ships’ crews implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures and isolated those who were sick, among other steps, the health agency said.

"At the first sign of an increase in the numbers of passengers reporting to the medical center with gastrointestinal illness, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitation procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus," a Princess spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "Our sanitation program, developed in coordination with the CDC, includes disinfection measures, isolation of ill passengers and communication to passengers about steps they can take to stay well while onboard."

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC has logged six outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that met its threshold for public notification since the beginning of the year. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in five, while one was unknown.

The illness is often associated with cruise ships but outbreaks occur in communities on land as well, according to Dr. Sarah E. Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist and the section chief of infectious diseases at NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital.

“There's not something special or unique about cruise ships,” she said. “It's really any type of congregate setting, but it's also happening out in the community on a much smaller scale among households and household contacts. It just doesn't come to the attention of public health as much as it does for larger congregate settings.”

Hochman said the virus is “incredibly infectious” and congregate settings tend to have many shared surfaces, such as handrails in cruise ship stairwells or elevators. “And so, if you just have one person who's shedding the virus and touches the surface and then someone else touches it and then touches their mouth, that's how it can spread in those types of settings.”

Cruise ship medical facilities: What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey)

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer isn't as effective against norovirus, and Hochman emphasized that washing hands with soap and water “will do a lot to prevent the spread.”

The news comes after more than two dozen Silversea Cruises guests got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on the luxury line’s Silver Nova ship during a sailing that began in late March.

Award-Winning Actress Hannah Waddingham Officially Christens Sun Princess in Awe-Inspiring Ceremony

Michael carbonara, tyra banks, britto, randy fenoli, original “love boat” cast members, celebrity chefs and tv personalities on hand to celebrate plus musical performance by natasha bedingfield.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

BARCELONA, Spain, (April 23, 2024) – In a spectacular celebration today at the Port of Barcelona, award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham officially welcomed the newest and most innovative Princess Cruises ship – Sun Princess – serving as godmother during a star-studded naming ceremony.

The time-honored maritime tradition took place onboard Sun Princess in the all-new Princess Arena and Waddingham, alongside the ship’s Captain Craig Street, joyously pronounced, “I name this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” She then released the celebratory bottle of Champagne to smash against the ship wishing good fortune to all of the ship’s guests and crew sailing to incredible destinations all over the world.

“Hannah is globally admired and adored for her immense talent and determination. Those qualities coupled with her family’s deep connection and love for the sea make her the perfect godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We are honored that she has joined us for this pinnacle moment, and that she will remain a treasured part of the ship’s legacy forever.”

Known for her adored role as Rebecca Welton in “Ted Lasso,” Waddingham said being named Sun Princess godmother is a “pinch me” moment as she joins an esteemed group of women, including members of the Royal Family, who have also served as godmothers to Princess ships: Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984); Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006); among many notable celebrities and dignitaries.

Waddingham grew up boating and has fond memories of weekends in Dunkirk. In addition, her grandfather served in the Royal Navy during World War II.

“As much as theatre has always rippled through my bloodstream so too has a strong, historic familial connection with the Royal Navy and all things nautical,” said Waddingham. “I have of course seen over the years the iconic godmothers who have been asked to represent these magnificent ships and looked on in awe. It is therefore such a great privilege to have been asked to act as Godmother to the Sun Princess, first of her class. I can’t quite believe it.”

Actor and magician Michael Carbonaro served as master of ceremonies for the event, and joined by a host of celebrities and TV personalities including Tyra Banks, Romero Britto, Randy Fenoli, Jeff Corwin, Rob Floyd, along with celebrated chefs Dario Cecchini, Makoto Okuwa, and beloved original “Love Boat” cast members Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac) and Bernie Kopell (Doc).

In addition, Natasha Bedingfield was on hand to fittingly perform her smash hit “Pocket Full of Sunshine,” along with other award-winning hits including “Unwritten.”

What’s New, What’s Next Princess to Add Ship-within-a-Ship Concept to Sun Princess, Star Princess  Sanctuary Collection Debuts in September Prior to the Sun Princess naming ceremony, Princess President John Padgett shared a few details on what’s ahead for the world’s most iconic cruise brand. Notable news included introducing the exclusive, next-level Sanctuary Collection aboard Sun Princess, as the ship prepares to debut this select, all-inclusive oasis in October 2024. Guests reserving in the Sanctuary Collection will enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s top-deck retreat area, along with many additional bespoke events and high-end amenities designed to enhance their voyage.

Star Princess to Sail Alaska Voyages in Summer 2026 Also announced, the next Sphere-Class ship, Star Princess, will sail her first full summer in 2026 in Alaska, making it the first of its class to ever sail to the Great Land. Star Princess is currently under construction and scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean in September 2025.

Princess Collaborates with Celebrities to Launch Love Line Premium Liquors Princess also revealed its newest indulgence - the "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection.
