The Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is located in the central Kenyan highlands and offers a beautiful view of Mount Kenya. It’s an oasis of peace in the middle of the vast nature of the surrounding highlands. Surrounded by three game reserves full of rhinos, this lodge offers an ideal base for game drives.

If you want to get away from it all, this place is perfect for you. With 9 double chalets and 2 family chalets, as well as 9 exclusive safari tents, the lodge offers feel-good accommodations for different needs. In the middle of the lodge is a pond where weaver birds like to nest. Right next to it there is a library with a small sunset bar. The spa area with a sauna, a relaxing jacuzzi and a massage room, invites you to relax after an exhausting safari day before having a sundowner at the bush bar and some delicacies from the bush kitchen in the bush restaurant.

FACILITIES AT THE LODGE

The lodge facilities are designed to enhance your experience by complementing the exquisite surrounding wilderness. Rhino Ridge is designed to ‘bring the outdoors in' by incorporating open spaces and maximising the expansive views over the reserve.

Indoor dining area - this is where your breakfast and luncheon is served, along with our delicious dinners in the evening. Outdoor dining deck - opens from the indoor dining and lounge area and is the perfect spot for al fresco breakfast or lunch.

Our well-stocked bar serves all your usual favourites along with delicious cocktails and specialty coffees. Our cellar has a fantastic selection of prime South African wines.

The comfortable lounge area has a fireplace, a small library and a selection of board games.

Sun umbrellas and wooden loungers with comfortable cushions surround our unique infinity pool that overlooks the African bushveld below.

Ridge Safari Lodge is situated on Mpembeni community land that they chose to incorporate into HIP to establish the first five star lodge inside the game reserve. This is a unique joint venture between the community, the park and a private company creating much needed employment and generating revenue for conservation through park fees and levies. One of the aspects that we are most proud of at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is this shared community ownership of the lodge and our commitment to the empowerment of the local previously disadvantaged community of Hlabisa. In keeping with the Isibindi ethos, Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is a joint venture between the National Empowerment Fund and the local Mpembeni community who own the land on which the lodge is built. People from the community have been trained to work in various departments and now constitute 97% of the lodge staff.

“If you are umming and aahing about going. Stop, and book”

This is the kind of stay that leaves you wanting everyone you know to go and experience! From the moment you arrive to fresh wet face cloths to the minute you leave with padkos in hand, every detail, every interaction, every meal leaves you feeling like you’re a favourite family member who has come to stay. Staff greeting you by name with smiles! But for me, the icing on the gluten-free cake was the meal planning around being gluten free. Not once did I look at anyone else’s food and feel I was missing something. Every meal was delicious. Malva pudding and carrot cake? What more could a girl ask for? Please extend my thanks again to the chefs! If you are umming and aahing about going. Stop, and book. Have i mentioned the fantastic accommodation, great game drives and the wonderful spa? Loved it!

Rhino Ridge and all the staff were absolutely fantastic and we could not stop raving about it to friends and family. The service 10/10. The accommodation (Villa 6) 10/10. The food 10/10. We stayed at the lodge for 2 nights and experienced exceptional service from the moment we arrived. The family unit was very clean and convenient. The game drives are unforgettable (Thulani is a great guide!), the food was excellent and all staff are very helpful and friendly. It was my husband's birthday and to our surprise a delicious cake was baked and presented at our dinner table which was absolutely amazing! As a result of my exciting stories at work about the whole experience, one of the colleagues travelled to the same lodge a week later and was even more excited! Thank you to all staff for making our visit a very special and memorable!

On arrival at Rhino Ridge, we received a very warm welcoming from Bryce, Precious and Zanele. I loved their professionalism and warm spirit. The Lodge is magnificent with the views to die for! We arrived just in time for a delicious high tea and again the staff at the restaurant were amazing, especially Themba. I felt at home to the point that I remember everyone by their names.

“Out of This World”

Early january 2020, we spent two nights at this lodges within the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi NP. The rooms and food were excellent, and the views from the lodge and infinity pool are top! What a view on the rolling hills of Zulu land. Having experienced the game drives in the private reserves of Kruger, the games drives here were somewhat less exiting as the cars cannot leave the roads in search of animals. This being said, the safari walk is a MUST DO. Highly recommended in the morning. We got up at 4:30am and were walking at 5:00am. The experience of the silence and the sun rising behind the hills is unforgettable. Sitting within 50 metres of rhino's is out of this world.

Travelling from Durban?

Many of our guests choose to fly into and drive from Durban, the third-largest city in South Africa. With a warm sub-tropical climate, Durban is South Africa’s favourite holiday resort city, and its modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere and vibrant mix of cultures make it a worthwhile stop along your way.

Top tourist attractions include the Golden Mile beachfront promenade, the Durban Botanical Gardens, Umgeni River Bird Park, the cultural Indian Quarter, uShaka Marine World, Moses Mabhida Stadium, and many more.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park

The area was proclaimed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999 by UNESCO. It’s a place of superlative natural beauty, comprising three major lake systems and eight ecosystems with 526 bird species and coastal sand dunes amongst the highest in the world.

St Lucia is two-and-a-half hours’ drive from King Shaka International Airport and is a worthwhile stopover on the way to Thonga Beach Lodge. You’ll need to drive about half an hour towards the coast, but visiting St Lucia is a wonderful way to experience a taste of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. St Lucia boasts the largest free-roaming hippo population in South Africa and, to this day, hippos can still be seen wandering down the streets at night.

Taking a boat safari on the St Lucia Estuary is an absolute must where you will see an astonishing number of hippos, birdlife and crocodiles.

Houseboat safari on Lake Jozini

Experience the first houseboats in South Africa on Lake Jozini - still the only ones of their kind. Onboard Shayamanzi Houseboats, soak up the stunning scenery of the Lebombo Mountains and the magnificent wildlife of the Pongola Game Reserve on the shores of Lake Jozini (also known as Pongolapoort Dam). Enjoy the calm serenity of the Lake Jozini waters, the thrill of tiger fishing or the adventure of mountain biking in the heart of the Zululand bushveld.

Western shores of the iSimangaliso Park

If you are travelling from St Lucia to Thonga Beach Lodge, consider driving through the iSimangaliso Park via Dukuduku Gate before rejoining the N2 highway at Charters Creek. This is a beautiful wilderness area where you’ll have the opportunity to spot a wide array of wildlife. Please note that you will be required to pay park fees at the gate and that trailers are not allowed on this route.

Ilala Weavers & Fig Tree Café at Hluhluwe

Ilala Weavers is a family-owned business and is a great place to stop for a good coffee, light meal and excellent local curios.
Ilala Weavers is the largest wholesaler of handwoven crafts in South Africa. Baskets are made from indigenous raw materials and wire are their speciality. The area is synonymous with the Zulu women handweaving Zulu baskets, laughing and talking to each other as they go about their craft.

Ilala Weavers also offers:

• Zulu Cultural Museum - fascinating to see the old Zulu antiques and artefacts
• African Art Gallery - displaying art from different African cultures
• Fig Tree Café and Deli - open seven days a week, the cafe serves breakfast and light lunches and has a full bar facility.
• A children’s play area
• Hand-beaded Angels that have become a symbol of hope. The sale of these Angels supports various local charities and initiatives

Travelling from Kruger Park?

Guests travelling by car from the Kruger National Park exit the park via Crocodile Bridge and then travel through the charming mountain kingdom of Swaziland, winding through hills and valleys on their way to the vibrant province of KwaZulu-Natal. An overnight stop either in Swaziland or just south of the Golela border post in KwaZulu-Natal is advised to break the journey.

Samburu Safari

Samburu National Park is a rugged, semi-arid park in the Northern Province of Kenya, situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. The reserve is located a two and a half-hour drive from the Rhino Watch Lodge. This safari is a perfect addition to your stay at the Rhino Watch Lodge as it offers a completely different experience in comparison to other game reserves due to the difference in landscape and the wildlife it attracts. The park is also less well-known and as a result, less crowded than most other Kenyan reserves, but is nevertheless teeming with life, including large herds of elephants. We will be staying at the Elephant Bedroom Camp on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River.

Lake Bogoria and Baringo Safari

Lake Bogoria and Baringo are two of several lakes in the spectacular Rift Valley, which are home to a fascinating fauna. It is truly a bird watcher´s paradise with over 400 recorded bird species in the area. The drive to the Rift Valley takes approximately two hours from the Rhino Watch Lodge. Heading around the well-known Lake Nakuru we will reach the more quiet Lake Bogoria. The lake attracts massive flocks of thousands of flamingoes, turning the shores pink. Apart from the flamingos, we have the chance to observe various other bird species. The lake is also known for its geothermal activity in the form of hot springs and geysers. Just to the north of Lake Bogoria and the most northerly of all the Rift Valley lakes is Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake dotted with picturesque islands. Here we will be staying in Soi Safari Lodge on the shores of the lake, where you have the chance to see hippos and crocodiles. A boat trip out on the lake is included to observe fish eagles, kingfishers, and various other birds.

A safari to the Kilimanjaro starts early morning from Nairobi or from the Rhino Watch Safari Lodge. Around lunchtime, we will reach the entrance to the Amboseli National Park. After lunch, we will start our safari expedition to the large elephant herds at the foot of the Great White Mountain.

Tsowa Safari Island specials

Introducing the newest addition to the Isibindi family, Tsowa Safari Island which is situated just 40km upstream from the iconic Victoria Falls. This is a surreal place, gently set apart from the busy world.

Wake to the calls of the resident Pel’s Fishing Owl and the soundtrack of the crickets. Fall asleep to the calls of hyena and lions. We placed the camp on a site chosen for its magnificent forest canopy and enormous termite mound resting gently alongside the lounge. The golden green light pours through the trees and forest vines in the early morning and late afternoon. The fire pit deck is suspended over the Zambezi river and afternoons can be spent watching the reflection of the sunset over the Zambezi National Park as animals come down to drink.
