27 Days Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand Tour

The best time to visit thailand cambodia vietnam together.

The best time to visit Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam together is from November to April, which is the dry season in this region.

Here are some reasons why this is the best time to visit: ● The weather is comfortable and dry. You can avoid the rain, humidity, and floods from May to October, and the heat and sun in April and May. ● The scenery is diverse and beautiful. Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia Cultural Tours -15 Days/14 Nights

We chose Bee Gng for our trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to celebrate my 50th Birthday. The attention to detail was first class- everything worked really well. They found great guides and drivers for each place and their choice of hotels was excellent. The details provided in advance were great quality and very detailed - it almost seemed too good to be true- yet everything listed happened almost exactly as promised. When it was slightly off it was not due to galatourist, yet they quickly acted to make things right. My advice would be to check the details of trips and sights and explain the things you like and don’t like doing- this company will really work hard to match your needs and make the perfect trip.I highly recommend them and especially Ms. Jennie.

Southeast Asia Discovery: Seasides and Street Food

Pimm was an awesome guide, she is very knowledgeable, professional yet super funny and friendly, and very caring and organized. We never had any trouble and our tour was super smooth, she always have us a heads up and provided all the info before we had even thought about asking. Her food recommendations are the best! She always knew a few places to choose from and they were all amazing, and obviously safe to go for a Western stomach. She is always happy to help with anything, and I always felt extremely safe knowing that she will take care of us in the event of an emergency. I highly recommend her and would always go on a trip with her again!

21 days Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia Tour

21 days Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia

21 Days Thailand Laos Vietnam Cambodia We had a great time on this tour! My husband and I had wanted to go to South East Asia for some time, and we were looking for a trip that would give us a realistic overview in the month we had available. We knew we wanted to get to Thailand (my favorite cuisine), Vietnam (lots of history and, again, the food), and Cambodia (Angor Wat), and thought, why not throw in Laos? This itinerary looked really ambitious but like it had a good balance of travel, activity, and leisure. Hoi An Adventures is a Vietnamese company, so we weren’t surprised that Vietnam got a disproportionate focus to the other countries. What we loved: Our gut instinct about the itinerary was spot on. Yes, we covered a lot of ground. I hadn’t quite realized just how many flights we’d take, but with one overnight train trip and five flights, we were able to see some amazing parts of each of the four countries. It’s hard picking highlights, as there were so many. Certainly, Halong Bay and Hoi An. The unexpected jewel of the trip was Luang Prabang, Laos, a town I’d never even heard of before this trip. Thanks for including it and for allowing us four nights there and free time just to wander its magical streets! There were, of course, lots of places we’d have liked to get that we didn’t have a chance to. But if/when we’re back, we’ll have a pretty good idea of where we want to go and how to get there. We also applaud the hotel choices. In each city except Chiang Mai, we were right in the heart of the town. The Chiang Mai hotel wasn’t bad, but quite possibly because we were further away from the activity, that was our least favorite stop. (It also made us more appreciative of all the others being actually in the towns.) The hotels themselves ranged from perfectly adequate (the Ho Chi Minh City hotel was one of only two “deluxe” hotels, and it was the least impressive) to rustically charming (the Luang Prabang guesthouse, Lao Wooden House, which we loved) to old world elegance (Siem Reap, City View). What we liked: the excursions were all pretty good. The guides English varied significantly. All were able to speak well enough to convey information, and some were able to understand it well enough to answer questions. All seemed passionate about their subject matter. Favorite guides included River in Hoi An and Top in Ho Chi Minh City, but we learned from all of them. We particularly appreciated the tour through a local market in Luang Prabang and the temples off the beaten track in Angor Wat. The tailored garment in Hoi An was a terrific souvenir. We liked the ratio of time committed to excursions and free time—though we had a travel companion who was unhappy the time wasn’t more scheduled, so opinions can vary on that. Being dropped off and picked up from all transportation hubs made traveling really easy. It’s the first time we’ve had that benefit, and it made us converts. What we liked less: Not Hoi An Tours’ fault, but my husband and I wound up traveling with one other person throughout our trip. That enforced intimacy can be a bit awkward. More people on the tour would have given each of the three of us more opportunities to find people who meshed with us and shared our interests. In some cities we paired up with other small groups, which was nice and gave us a bigger pool of new acquaintances to share the experience with. In the past we’ve been on trips with 10 or so other people, and sharing new experiences with them has been one of the benefits of travel. It’s luck of the draw, as the tour will go on with a minimum of two people. If you sign up, maybe you can get some friends or family to go with you! Communication hit some snags here and there. We made our initial reservation through Tour Radar, and all the communications that went on through that portal were fine. Unfortunately, someone in the Hoi An Tours office entered my email address incorrectly, and we had trouble getting some messages, not knowing we were missing them. They absolutely tried! They gave us a mobile phone, presumably so we could contact them easily. And any time we contacted them through the working email portal, they got back to us quickly. There were some variances between the itinerary we did finally receive and what actually occurred. For example, we were told we’d be on an upgraded boat on Halong Bay, but when we got there, we weren’t. So the stated features and activities didn’t jibe with what we actually received. Our itinerary also had some differing times and activities from the one our traveling companion had, which led to some confusion. Overall, this was a great trip and we would recommend it highly! We’ll relive the vibrant traffic of Bangkok, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City and treasure our memories of the Mekong River and Delta, the floating lanterns of Hoi An, the charming back streets of Luang Prabang, and the warmth and welcome of Siem Reap. Can’t wait to plan our next trip.

Southeast Asia Trifecta: Cambodia, Vietnam & Bangkok Vibes

The ceo was very well organised and efficient making the tour run smoothly despite the very intense itinerary. Majority of the group getting stomach bug/ food poisoning was very unfortunate, but not the CEO’s fault, however avoiding that would’ve made the experience even better.

Cambodia Adventure Tour

Cambodia Adventure

This trip was not what I expected - it was SO much MORE!! I was nervous travelling to a non-english speaking country, as a female, with a teenage daughter in tow, but it has become one of the BEST experiences of my entire life!! The trip was well organised and planned, our tour leader Mony was amazing - he shared his culture and knowledge with us, and was approachable. We met amazing people and created great friendships, while we experienced the true culture and people of Cambodia. There is a lot of travel, but the transport was safe and comfortable, and even with the long hours of travel there were plenty of stops and opportunities to experience and interact with locals, and still time to explore/do activities when we reached our destinations. Use the travel time to get to know the other members of your group better, or watch the world go by - there is plenty to look at! The hotels/guesthouses were mostly what we expected for the price we paid, but some were better! Can't wait for our next trip!!

This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!

Days One to Three: Bangkok

Ready to start? Bangkok is one of the biggest cities in Southeast Asia (and the world), as well as the world’s most popular tourist destination. It’s also a major travel hub for Southeast Asia, making it the best place to begin and end your trip.

Our Bangkok itinerary is split into three days. The first gives you a chance to see some of the city’s famous temples and historical landmarks. On the second, you’ll visit modern shopping districts. Finally, the third day takes you to another side of Bangkok most tourists don’t see.

Bangkok Day One

Wat Arun, Bangkok. Thailand

  • The Grand Palace. Arguably Bangkok’s most famous historical attraction, the Grand Palace is a huge complex of historical buildings located on Rattanakosin Island in the centre of Old Bangkok. The palace grounds house several royal buildings constructed in the 19th century, as well as the incredible Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Grand Palace is open from 8:30am every day, and it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowds.
  • Wat Pho. Located a short walk from the Grand Palace, this smaller temple complex is the home of a 160 foot gold reclining Buddha statue. It’s also where you can find one of Thailand’s most famous massage schools, making it a great place for a quick break.
  • Wat Arun. Located across the Chao Phraya River from Wat Pho (and easy to access via cross-river ferry to Tha Tien Pier), Wat Arun is an iconic Buddhist temple that’s known as the Temple of Dawn.

Most of Bangkok’s historical sites are located in the Rattanakosin area. This part of town is also a great place to eat, with a variety of restaurants serving everything from cheap Thai favourites to high-end international food. Some of our recommendations include:

  • Thip Samai Pad Thai , which is a long-serving local Pad Thai restaurant that’s famous for its assembly line-like kitchen organisation and excellent fried noodle dishes.
  • Sala Rattanakosin Eatery and Bar , a high-end international restaurant inside the Sala Rattanakosin Boutique Hotel that offers great views of the Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun.
  • The Deck, a more affordable alternative to Sala Rattanakosin that’s located nearby and also offers great views of Wat Arun across the river.

Bangkok Day Two

Thailand - Bangkok - view from Moon Bar

  • Siam Paragon is a large, international mall that’s usually the centre of activity in the area. Central World is an even bigger mall located close to Chit Lom station with a diverse selection of mid-range shops.
  • If you’re looking for electronics, souvenirs or budget clothing, you’ll like the MBK Centre , which is famous for its maze of alley-like hallways and hundreds of tiny shops.
  • For luxury shopping, the best options are Central Embassy , which is a newer mall near Phloen Chit BTS station, and Gaysorn Plaza , Bangkok’s first high-end fashion shopping mall.
  • Jim Thompson House. One of the few historical and cultural attractions in Bangkok’s modern city centre, the Jim Thompson House is a large home built during the 1950s for American silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson. The house incorporates several buildings in a traditional Thai architectural style, as well as an incredible collection of antiques from around Thailand and across Asia. Tours of the home are available in several languages.
  • Erawan Shrine. This small shrine across the intersection from Central World is one of the most popular places in Bangkok for locals and visitors to pray for good fortune. The shrine depicts Brahma, known as ‘Phra Phrom’ to Thai Buddhists.
  • After a morning of shopping, you can see another side of Bangkok on a night bike tour by Grasshopper Adventures . The bike tour travels down some of Old Bangkok’s oldest alleyways and through picturesque markets, offering a different view of Bangkok.

Bangkok Day Three

If you’d like to spend more time at the beach, you can leave Bangkok a day early to enjoy an extra night at any of the destinations listed below. Otherwise, your third day in Bangkok is an excellent opportunity to see a side of the city most visitors never get the chance to see.

  • Khlong Tours of Thonburi. Exploring Thonburi, the quieter, less developed side of Bangkok, is a great way to see the everyday lives of local residents.
  • The Small Teak Boat Canal Adventure hosts a relaxing, interesting trip through the historical canals of Bangkok’s Thonburi area, letting you escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and see a side of Bangkok most people never experience.
  • Chinatown. Yaowarat, or Chinatown, is one of Bangkok’s busiest districts, with a wide range of markets, street food stands and businesses of all types. It’s also home to some of the best authentic Chinese and Thai food in the city, making it a great place for dinner.
  • Some of the best dining options in Chinatown include Hua Seng Hong , which serves a great selection of dumplings and traditional Cantonese food, and the small but always crowded Fikeaw Yao Wa-Rat food stand.

  • While the beaches here aren’t as spectacular as on the islands, Hua Hin’s convenient location makes it a fun place to spend a few days. Our Quick Guide to Hua Hin covers all of the city’s must-see attractions, accommodation options, areas of interest and more.

IMG_0730

  • Known as Thailand’s Sin City, Pattaya is famous (or more accurately, infamous) for its seedy nightlife. It’s also a decent beach resort that’s easy to access by taxi, bus or minivan in under two hours from Bangkok.
  • If you’re visiting Thailand for beaches, you’ll be underwhelmed by Pattaya. Likewise if you’re searching for an “authentic” destination that hasn’t been ruined by mass tourism. Otherwise, Pattaya can be a fun, affordable place to spend a few days by the beach.
  • Our Quick Guide to Pattaya lists Pattaya’s main areas of interest, top restaurants and best things to do, as well as information on how to get there from Bangkok.
  • The easiest major island to reach from Bangkok, Koh Samet offers impressive beaches and a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere. If you want to stay right on the beach and enjoy a chilled out few days without travelling far from Bangkok, Koh Samet is a good choice.
  • Like most of the beach destinations near Bangkok, Koh Samet gets quite a lot of visitors on the weekend. It’s also a little bit more expensive than other islands, especially for accommodation.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Samet covers the essentials of visiting the island, from access from Bangkok to hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

Koh Tao, Thailand

  • Located about five hours from Bangkok by bus, Koh Chang is one of Thailand’s most rewarding islands for visitors. Large, lightly developed and home to some of the least crowded beaches in Thailand, Koh Chang is a great choice if you’re seeking peace and quiet.
  • It can also be quite a fun island, with a good selection of activities for tourists. Just be aware that Koh Chang is heavily affected by seasonal weather and generally isn’t a good option during the rainy season.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Chang includes all of the key information you need to plan your visit, from getting to the island to hotels, restaurants, activities and more.

Beaches In Southern Thailand:

Phuket, Thailand

  • Phuket is Thailand’s most famous, heavily developed and popular island, with a great range of beaches offering every possible experience. If you want to visit a convenient beach resort and don’t care about being around other tourists, Phuket is what you’re looking for.
  • The beaches on Phuket range from heavily overdeveloped to quiet and tranquil. Since Phuket is such a big island, the location you choose to stay in will have a massive impact on your overall experience.
  • Phuket is one of two islands in Thailand with its own airport, meaning you can fly in directly from Bangkok without a bus, ferry or train journey to worry about.
  • Our Quick Guide to Phuket covers the main areas of interest on Phuket, as well as the best things to do, places to eat and more.

Railay West Beach, Thailand

  • Another popular choice, Krabi Province is home to some of Thailand’s most impressive coastal scenery and beaches. The Krabi area can be divided into Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Railay, all of which offer a very different experience.
  • If you’re looking for a more relaxing and peaceful environment in Phuket but also want to fly to your destination instead of worrying about buses and ferries, Krabi is a great choice.
  • Our Quick Guides cover every key area of interest in Krabi. You can find more information about the provincial capital in our Quick Guide to Krabi Town , plus recommendations for its two main tourism areas in our Quick Guide to Ao Nang and Quick Guide to Railay Beach .

280717 samui

  • Koh Samui is a popular island in the Gulf of Thailand, famous for its excellent beaches, good variety of dining options and ease of access. Like Phuket, Koh Samui has its own airport that allows you to fly in directly from Bangkok without spending half a day on buses and ferries.
  • The beaches on Koh Samui range from somewhat heavily developed to almost entirely quiet and peaceful. Like Phuket, Samui is quite a large island, meaning the area you choose to stay will have a huge impact on your overall experience.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Samui lists all of the main areas, sightseeing highlights, best places to eat and much more.

Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan, Hadrin west

  • Although Koh Phangan is best known for its infamous Full Moon Party, it’s also a diverse and interesting holiday destination. Koh Phangan has a great selection of beaches, ranging from party spots and backpacker hangouts to completely untouched and undiscovered areas.
  • If you’re looking for a reasonably large island to explore over the course of three to four days, Koh Phangan fits the bill nicely. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), there’s no airport, meaning you’ll need to get the ferry from Koh Samui or Surat Thani.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Phangan lists all of the island’s key areas of interest, from party spots like Haad Rin to quiet and less developed beaches on the northern side of the island.

Northern tip of Sairee Beach

  • Koh Tao is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand famous for its cheap and high quality scuba diving courses. Arguably one of the cheapest places in the world to learn how to dive, this is where you’ll want to be if getting PADI certified is one of your priorities in Southeast Asia.
  • Beyond diving, Koh Tao is also a fun place to swim, sunbathe and snorkel. There are several beaches, although most of the activity on the island is centred around Sairee Beach and the small town of Mae Haad.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Tao includes a full summary of the best things to do and places to stay on Koh Tao, as well as dining and transportation recommendations.

Beach on island Ko Lanta

  • Quiet, peaceful and largely unspoiled by mass tourism, Koh Lanta is a mid-sized island that’s a short distance from Krabi. If you’re looking for an island that captures the feel of Thailand’s main beach resorts 20 years ago, you’ll love Koh Lanta’s quiet, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Beyond the relaxed vibe and lack of crowds, Koh Lanta is home to some of the best beaches in Southern Thailand. There are numerous resorts dotting the island’s shores, ranging from cheap bungalows to elegant luxury resorts that are ideal for couples.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Lanta covers the island’s main areas of interest, hotels and resorts, dining options and more.

Sunrise on Koh Yao Noi (2007-03-004)

  • One of the only island destinations in Phang Nga Province, Koh Yao is made up of two islands — Koh Yao Yai and the smaller, more developed Koh Yao Noi — that offer some of the best views of the Andaman Sea in Thailand.
  • Overlooking the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao Noi is one of Southern Thailand’s top romantic holiday destinations, with a variety of luxurious resorts. Koh Yao Yai is the larger of the two islands and offers a quiet, peaceful and natural experience.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Yao includes the main areas of interest on both islands, as well as the best hotels, restaurants and transportation options to and from Koh Yao.

Koh Jum

  • Quiet, remote and completely unknown to most tourists, Koh Jum is a great island if you want to escape the crowds and mass development of places like Samui, Phuket and Pattaya.
  • With just a few resorts and restaurants, no ATMs and several tour operators, Koh Jum is about as quiet and undeveloped as you can get in Thailand, making it the perfect place to relax by the beach with a good book or two.
  • Our Quick Guide to Koh Jum covers all of Koh Jum’s main areas, accommodation options, restaurants and transportation options for getting to and from the island.

Cambodia Days Eight to Ten: Siem Reap and Angkor Archaeological Park

Angkor Wat

  • After a week in Thailand, it’s time to travel to Cambodia. The Cambodia leg of our three week itinerary begins in Siem Reap – the country’s fifth largest city and the gateway to the incredible Angkor Archaeological Park.
  • Siem Reap is a relatively small city with just a few attractions, meaning you’ll spend most of your visit exploring the temples in the archaeological park. As one of Cambodia’s main tourism cities, Siem Reap has a surprisingly good selection of international restaurants and pubs.
  • The easiest way to get to Siem Reap is to fly in from Bangkok. Flights depart several times per day and arrive at Siem Reap International Airport, which is about 10 minutes from the city itself by taxi or tuk-tuk.You can also get the bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Compare prices and departure times for Siem Reap flights and buses to plan your trip.
  • Our Quick Guide to Siem Reap covers the main areas of interest and best accommodation in Siem Reap in more detail, making it a useful resource if you haven’t booked your trip yet.
  • Angkor Archaeological Park requires at least a day to visit, making it best to spend time around Siem Reap itself if you arrive in the city after lunch. Some of the best attractions around the city include:
  • Cambodia Landmine Museum. Formerly ‘Siem Reap Landmine Museum’, this locally operated museum contains deactivated landmines and other explosives recovered from the Cambodian countryside, as well as several exhibits documenting the serious threat landmines pose to the people of Cambodia. Located about 25km north of Siem Reap, the museum is best accessed by tuk-tuk. Most of the drivers in Siem Reap know the place and can wait outside the museum while you visit.
  • Spas. There are several great spas and massage businesses in Siem Reap offering everything from luxury treatments to cheap Khmer massage. Some of the best options include Sokkhak Spa , Khmer Relief Spa and Lemongrass Garden Beauty & Massage .
  • Pub Street. Siem Reap’s nightlife capital, Pub Street is a short walking street right in the centre of town that’s home to numerous international bars and restaurants. One of Siem Reap’s best places to enjoy a good meal and a fun night out with other travellers.

Angkor Archaeological Park

  • Angkor Archaeological Park is gigantic in scale, with hundreds of structures ranging from finely restored temples to large-scale ruins. The entire park takes days, if not weeks to see, making it best to cover the highlights if you’re only visiting Siem Reap for two or three days. You’ll need transport to get out to the temples from Siem Reap and to travel between the temples themselves – they are spread out over a large area. It’s very affordable to hire your own driver for your own private tour around the archaeological park.
  • The main attractions of Angkor can be seen on a one-day visit. However, spending two or more days exploring the park will give you a deeper understanding of the significance of many of the buildings inside and let you see areas that most tourists never get the chance to visit. A guided tour can also be very helpful in understanding the history of Angkor and bringing the ruins to life in your imagination.

Beat the Angkor Heat (and the Crowds)

  • Pro tip: Start any tour of the temples early. If you leave for the temples before sunrise not only do you beat the crowds but more importantly you also beat the heat. By 11 am it will be super hot and humid in the Archaeological Park. This is an ideal time to return to Siem Reap, grab lunch, have a rest and then come back out to the temples around 3 or 4pm as the heat starts to drop and the Golden Hour light comes in as the precursor to sunset. You can easily arrange all of this with your driver beforehand.

Must-See Angkor Temples 1 Day Tour

  • Our One Week in Cambodia Itinerary provides more information on visiting Angkor for two or three days. Below, we’ve included the must-see temples and areas that are worth visiting on a one-day tour:
  • Angkor Wat. The defining icon of Cambodia, Angkor Wat is a 12th century Buddhist temple that’s the world’s largest religious monument. Angkor Wat is easily the most popular temple in the park, as well as one of the easiest to access. Angkor tends to be busy first thing in the morning as many people come hoping to see the sunrise over the iconic five prangs (spires) of the temple.
  • Angkor Thom and Bayon . Angkor Thom is an ancient city that previously served as the capital of the Khmer Empire. Its buildings range from large protective walls and gates to some of the archaeological park’s most impressive temples.
  • One must-see temple within Angkor Thom is Prasat Bayon, which features large stone sculptured faces that look out over the temple. Like most of the park, the majority of the buildings in Angkor Thom are open to visitors, letting you explore with relative ease.
  • Ta Prohm. Unlike most of the temples in Angkor Archaeological Park, Ta Prohm — a 12th or 13th century Bayon-style temple, has been left almost completely unrestored, allowing vines and tree roots to ‘take back the temple. Equal parts atmosphere ruins and beautiful ancient temple, Ta Prohm is a favourite of visitors to the archaeological park and a great temple to visit after stopping at Angkor Wat and exploring inside Angkor Thom.
  • Want to more time at Angkor Archaeological Park? Our One Week in Cambodia itinerary has a full list of temples to visit on days two and three of your Angkor Archaeological Park visit, letting you extend your stay and see more historic temples.

Days 11 and 12: Phnom Penh

CAMBODIA 2016-16

  • After visiting Siem Reap and seeing Angkor Wat, it’s time to travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital and largest city. Equal parts relaxing former colonial capital and bustling economic hub, Phnom Penh is quickly developing into one of Southeast Asia’s top new cities.
  • As a result, you’ll find a mix of old and new here, with incredible palaces and large, French-style boulevards alongside cranes, building sites and impressive new office towers.
  • Our Quick Guide to Phnom Penh covers the city in more detail, with accommodation, dining and transport recommendations. From Siem Reap, the fastest way to get to Phnom Penh is to fly . If you don’t mind a six hour journey, you can also get to Phnom Penh by bus or minivan. Compare prices and departure times for flights and buses between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh
  • While sightseeing in Phnom Penh isn’t quite as exciting as the archaeological wonderland near Siem Reap, there are several interesting things to do and see before continuing onwards to Ho Chi Minh City:
  • The Royal Palace. Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace is conveniently located right beside the main Riverfront tourist area, making it easy to access. Inside, you’ll find a variety of 19th century buildings built in a timeless Khmer style. The palace serves at the official residence of King Sihamoni, meaning large parts aren’t open to the public. However, it’s still worth a visit to see the impressive architectural style of Cambodia, particularly the incredible Silver Pagoda.
  • Central Market. This 1930s Art Deco market is a great place to shop for souvenirs and cheap clothing. You’ll also find a good selection of stalls selling everyday items such as cooking pots and pans, homeware and fresh food. Be prepared to haggle here, as merchants are used to tourists and will usually price their goods at 20 to 50% above the market price.
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Used as a prison camp and execution centre during the Khmer Rouge period, this old high school has been converted into a museum that shows the horrific experiences many people went through during the Cambodian genocide. Located close to the centre of Phnom Penh, the museum is a sobering experience and a must-visit attraction for students of history.
  • The Killing Fields at Choeung Ek . Located outside Phnom Penh, the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek were used to dispose of people the Khmer Rouge regime deemed as problems of negative influences during their genocidal reign over Cambodia. The Killing Fields are located approximately 17km south of the city. Most tuk-tuk drivers know the location and will offer a round trip at a fixed price, making it easy to travel there and back.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Phen

Days 13 and 14: Ho Chi Minh City

Saigon out there 12

  • From Phnom Penh, there are two ways to travel to Ho Chi Minh City. The easiest is to fly , which takes less than an hour and avoids the slow, time-consuming process of cross over the border by land. The second is to take the bus from Phnom Penh , which takes around six hours.
  • Our Vietnam itinerary starts in Ho Chi Minh City and goes north, with a quick stop in the scenic, historical town of Hoi an before going to Hanoi and Halong Bay.
  • Ho Chi Minh City — or Saigon, as it’s widely known — is Vietnam’s largest city and commercial centre. From markets and war museums to underground tunnel complexes, there’s more than enough to do in Ho Chi Minh City to keep you occupied for several days.
  • Our Quick Guide to Ho Chi Minh City covers all of the city’s main areas of interest, hotels and dining recommendations, transportation and more.
  • Ben Thanh Market. This bustling central market is a great place to shop for souvenirs, cheap clothes and other small items. Prices here are 20-40% above the market rate but will come down quickly if you negotiate with the vendors.
  • Independence Palace. Built in the early 1960s and clearly never redecorated since then, the former Presidential Palace is a large building in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City that’s a great time capsule back to 1965.
  • War Remnants Museum. Located a short distance from the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum features several moving exhibits about the war, as well as a collection of Vietnam War planes, tanks, trucks and other equipment.
  • Saigon Skydeck. This viewing area inside the ultra-modern Bitexco Financial Tower is located right in the modern centre of Ho Chi Minh City and offers incredible views of the city centre, outer suburbs and Saigon River.
  • Cu Chi Tunnels. One of the main attractions in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a huge complex of underground tunnels that were used during the Vietnam War as an operating base for the Viet Cong. Small portions of the tunnels are open to the public today, letting you see how the Viet Cong operated during the conflict. There are also several outdoor exhibits showing the traps and ambushes used in combat, as well as a war-era weapon shooting range.

Days 15 to 18: Hoi An

Old Town, Hoi An

  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Hoi An is one of the Vietnam’s most beautiful small cities. Hoi An is famous for its incredible Old Town, which consists of hundreds of beautiful local shophouses, several temples and numerous cafés, galleries and small businesses.
  • Hoi An is also Vietnam’s tailoring capital. If you’re in town for longer than two nights and need a new shirt, suit, dress or any other clothing, this is the place to order it.
  • Finally, Hoi An has two great beaches, both of which offer peace and quiet, clean water and a nice escape from the crowds that can often built up in the Old Town area.
  • Our Quick Guide to Hoi An lists top sightseeing spots in Hoi An, as well as specific hotels and restaurants for all price ranges. As a visitor, the best way to get into Hoi An is to fly to Da Nang and take a private car from the airport to your hotel in Hoi An .
  • Hoi An Old Town. Hoi An is famous for its Old Town — a collection of more than 800 shophouses, pagodas and other structures. Many of the buildings were constructed during the French colonial era, giving Hoi An a very distinct, unique aesthetic.
  • Two highlights of the Old Town include the Japanese Covered Bridge and Precious Heritage Museum , both of which are easy to access on foot.
  • Beaches. Hoi An has two main beaches, both of which offer clean sand and water with relatively little development. An Bang Beach attracts the largest crowds and has the best range of vendors and amenities, while Cua Dai Beach is quieter and less busy.
  • My Son Temple Ruins – ancient ruins from the 7th century Champa Kingdom are Vietnam’s answer to Angkor Wat – not quite as spectacular but still a UNESCO World Heritage site and a great reason to explore the countryside surrounding Hoi An
  • Tailored Clothing. Although you can find tailors throughout Vietnam, no other city has the same concentration of tailor shops as Hoi An. From suits and dresses to shoes, it’s possible to get almost anything custom made in Hoi An, usually at a good price. Popular tailors include Bebe ClothShop , Kimmy Custom Tailor and Yalo Couture , all of which have high review scores from travellers. There are also numerous small tailors around the city, although quality can vary dramatically from one shop to another.

Little Hanoi Hostel 1

Days 18 to 21: Hanoi and Halong Bay

IMG_7801

  • Finally, it’s time to visit Hanoi. Vietnam’s capital and second-largest city has a very different feel to its counterpart in the south, with scenic lakes and impressive temples, a historical Old Quarter and several monuments and museums to Ho Chi Minh.
  • Most of Hanoi’s highlights can be seen in one day, giving you plenty of time to travel overnight to Halong Bay for a cruise. We’ve covered Hanoi first, then provided information on visiting Halong bay at the end of the itinerary.
  • As always, our Quick Guide to Hanoi covers all of the city’s top areas of interest, things to do, places to eat and accommodation options.
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. After his death in the late 1960s, Vietnam’s revolutionary leader was embalmed and put on display in this mausoleum. Visiting is a unique yet somewhat morbid experience, with numerous armed guards protecting the body.
  • One Pillar Pagoda . A short walk away from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda is an important historical temple built in 1049 at the order of Emperor Lý Thái Tông.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake . One of Hanoi’s most popular sightseeing locations, Hoan Kiem Lake is a short walk away from the Old Quarter. The lake contains a small island that’s home to Temple of the Jade Mountain and connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge.
  • Hanoi Old Quarter. Home to many of Hanoi’s best mid-range and budget hotels, the Old Quarter is a bustling district made up of French colonial buildings, small restaurants and cafés. A fun place to stay in Hanoi, provided you don’t mind crowds and lots of activity.
  • Temple of Literature. This impressive temple complex was constructed during the 11th century and contains Vietnam’s first university. Today, the temple is an icon of Vietnam, with its design featured on the 100,000 dong banknote.

Halong Bay

  • One of Vietnam’s most impressive natural attractions, Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its incredible limestone karsts and islands. Halong Bay is about three hours from Hanoi by road and isn’t particularly easy to visit independently.
  • Instead, the best way to get to Halong Bay is to book a tour, which usually includes a day trip or overnight boat cruise with transportation from and back to Hanoi.
  • While an overnight trip offers a more detailed look at Halong Bay and a better experience, it also requires a full two days of your time. It’s still possible to see the highlights of Halong Bay as part of a day trip, meaning the best option ultimately depends on your schedule.
  • Our Quick Guide to Halong Bay covers the entire area in more detail, with information on the best tour operators and one-day, two-day and three-day cruises.

Explore The Bridge Over the River Kwai

road trip thailand cambodia vietnam

The Bridge Over the River Kwai, a historic and iconic structure located in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, is a living testament to the harrowing history of the Thailand-Burma Railway. This railway, also known as the “Death Railway,” was constructed during World War II by Allied prisoners of war and Asian laborers under Japanese supervision. The construction was marked by immense hardship, suffering, and loss of life, making it one of the most tragic episodes in the war’s history.

Visitors can explore this hauntingly significant site, gaining a deep understanding of the struggles and sacrifices made during the railway’s construction. The bridge itself is a steel truss bridge spanning the River Kwai, and it’s become a symbol of wartime resilience. In addition to the bridge, tourists can take a Death Railway train ride, retracing the treacherous route that cost thousands of lives. The experience offers a somber reflection on history. Moreover, Erawan National Park, known for its enchanting waterfalls and emerald green ponds, lies nearby, offering a tranquil contrast to the historical sites. A visit here, with its natural beauty and serenity, provides solace and underscores the importance of peace and remembrance in the modern world.

Immerse in the Elephant nature habitat at the Elephant Sanctuary

Elephant sanctuaries are committed to educating visitors about the challenges facing these animals, including habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok vie to be your favourite city on this wide-ranging itinerary, with urban adventures blended with a cruise through Halong Bay, temple discoveries in Siem Reap, and downtime on the beach in Phuket.

Recommended itinerary

Your incredible adventure begins in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, where you’ll be swept up in the melee of busy streets, fragrant with spices, riddled with scooters, and overlooked by a mix of architecture from occupations past. The Mövenpick Hotel will prove a soothing sanctuary to return to after you’ve spent a day with a private guide getting to know the city at your own pace and tailored to your interests.

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll be collected from Hanoi for the four-hour drive to Halong Bay to board the elegant Au Co ship, where you’ll spend a night onboard. You’ll disembark to cycle to a village on Cat Ba Island and have the chance to swim in the lagoon around Viet Hai pier. Come morning, join guests on the deck for t'ai chi and a spot of kayaking before heading to Hanoi airport for your onward flight to Hoi An.

Your next three days are spent in a hotel dedicated to relaxation and wellbeing. And while the Almanity Hoi An Resort & Spa has plenty to keep you lingering, you won’t miss out on the sights of Hoi An. You’ll join a private guided walking tour to get your bearings, visit Cau Temple, and take a boat trip along the Thu Bon River.

Hoi An

Ho Chi Minh City

A flight from Hoi An brings you to the vivacious Ho Chi Minh City to spend three memorable nights in the city once known as Saigon. You’ll explore the city with a private guide on a tour tailored to you, whether you want to go places the locals love or see the main sights. A second day has you boarding a boat on the magnificent Mekong Delta to watch local life unfold on the riverbanks.

Mekong Delta

You’ll fly to Siem Reap, checking into Tara Angkor for two nights — ideally placed for temple discoveries. Spend a full day exploring the atmospheric highlights, from the South Gate of Angkor Thom to the Terrace of Elephants and Ta Prohm, where trees grow from the walls.

Ta Prohm

Things switch gears again when you fly to Bangkok, ready for three nights in this sensory city. You’ll explore all the main highlights one day and take a trip to the colourful and fragrant floating market the next. The Sindhorn Midtown Hotel will prove the perfect central base for your explorations.

Wat Arun Temple, Bangkok

Your adventure finishes with some well-deserved downtime on the beach in Phuket, where there are four nights to relax and reflect on your incredible holiday. But the excitement isn’t over — you’ll take a scenic cruise around the Phi Phi Islands to understand why this area of Thailand is so sought-after. The rest of the time is yours to relax in the jungle surroundings and golden sands of Marina Phuket Resort. Heavenly.

  • Activity Length: 2-3 hours exploring in the morning, then again in the evening (5-6 hours total)

Rising very early, we will be out the door to catch sunrise at Angkor Wat. Our guides know some of the best-kept secrets of Angkor, and they will help our group capture some truly stunning images throughout the day today.

After sunrise, we'll head back to the resort for a lovely breakfast (which might just feel like lunch!). Generally speaking, Angkor is best explored during the morning and the late afternoon of each day, as the middle of the day tends to be rather hot and the lighting is not optimal for photography. During the day, we will have some down time to enjoy the gorgeous hotel grounds until mid-afternoon. For those who are interested, there is also a world-class spa and a golf course on the hotel grounds for guests to explore on their own!

By mid-afternoon, we'll be on our way back to Angkor Wat for the golden hour and a sublime sunset over the majestic temple grounds with our expert guide.

In the evening, the group will be free to enjoy a delicious meal on your own at one of the many chic restaurants in Siem Reap that have helped establish the city as a destination for fine cuisine. After dinner, stroll through town to peruse artwork and souvenirs, or enjoy a relaxing foot massage. Expect to sleep well tonight!

The Floating Villages of Tonle Sap Lake

  • Activity Overview: Explore villages of the Tonle Sap Lake by boat
  • Activity Length: 1.5 hrs drive each way, 4-5 hour boat trip

Today we will visit a traditional silk farm to learn a bit about local life and industry in this region. We'll get to see the process of creating Cambodia's beautiful textiles from start to finish while also learning what village life is like here.

After that, it's time to embark on an exciting cruise through the floating village region of Cambodia. This is an eye-opening journey through this fascinating corner of Cambodia where villagers live in clusters of stilted houses and subsist with very few possessions.

During our time in the floating villages, we will have the chance to visit a school where Boundless Journeys proudly provides support to this school on behalf of each guest. We will learn about the history of this amazing project that has helped so many young people in this community. This day will leave us with a unique perspective on just how different life is for people who live in this region.

Siem Reap to Hanoi

  • Activity Length: 1.5 hour flight, airport transfer

After a busy few days, this morning will be free to enjoy as we'd like. After lunch on our own, it's time to head to the airport to catch our direct flight to Hanoi.

Hanoi is a bustling city full of charm and a rich culture that dates back thousands of years. Over the next few days, we'll have the chance to see Hanoi's most iconic sites while learning much about the history and culture of Vietnam.

Upon arrival, our Vietnam team will meet us at the airport and get us checked in to our magnificent hotel in Hanoi. We will then dine at an excellent restaurant, a dinner which will serve as a culinary introduction to Vietnamese cuisine.

Sofitel Legend Metropole

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, Vietnam

This award-winning French colonial-style hotel has stood proudly in the heart of Hanoi since 1901. Once a gathering point for diplomats and high class society, the hotel has a rich history and lovely rooms, a recently built spa, and swimming pool. Within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake and the magnificent Opera House, the hotel is one of the few remaining hotels of its era.

Exploring Hanoi's History

  • Activity Overview: Historical and cultural walking tour through Hanoi
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours

Over the next two days, we will enjoy the many diverse sites of Hanoi city, the thousand-year-old northern capital of Vietnam. With an interesting mix of traditional Vietnamese architecture and French Colonial influences, Hanoi is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Vietnam. Today we will visit Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the President's House (where "Uncle Ho" worked until his final days), Ho Chi Minh's house on stilts, and One Pillar Pagoda, which showcases Vietnam's religious culture over the centuries. We'll also see Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the country's most ancient temples, surrounded by West Lake's calm waters, and the Senator John McCain Memorial, before heading to the Ethnology Museum of Hanoi.

After some downtime to get refreshed, we will be treated to a traditional water puppet show, a unique craft that tells stories about rural life in Vietnam through precise movements of puppets in water, After the show, we will be free to explore one of the many excellent restaurants in the area on our own.

A deeper dive into Hanoi

  • Activity Overview: Cyclo tour through the French Quarter

To begin our second day in Hanoi, we'll take a cyclo (rickshaw) tour through French Quarter, the best way to explore this historic and lively part of the city. Next, we'll visit the Hoa Lo Prison and the Literature Temple, two places which are essential to the long story of Vietnamese culture for very different reasons. Then, we'll see Dong Xuan market, where we'll feel the vibrant buzz of the locals going about their business.

After lunch, the final stop of the day is Hanoi Old Quarter, famous for its intricate street plans and quality crafts sold by locals - we'll have the whole afternoon to explore and shop the Old Quarter to our heart's content, and stroll back to the hotel when you've had your fill.

As this epic journey through Southeast Asia is finally coming to an end, this evening will be a special dinner to commemorate the experiences that we have all shared.

Departure from Hanoi

It's time for our amazing Southeast Asia adventure to end. Our team will provide airport transfers for the group to catchflight home from the Hanoi airport. Safe travels, and we hope to see you on a Boundless Journeys Adventure again soon!

Generally speaking, November through January is the cool season throughout Southeast Asia. During this period, weather is generallly pleasant and comfortable. Daytime highs will range from the upper 70s (Hanoi) to the mid 80s (Siem Reap), with highs in Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang in the low 80s on most days.

In northern Thailand and Laos, cool air can occasionally come down from the north at this time of year and deliver a refreshing nightime lows (as cold as the low 50s), but daytime highs will always reach the 80s. While rainfall can occur any time of year, it is generally rare during this time of year. The warmest months of the year are March through June.

Please come prepared to walk in rain or warm sunshine, and be sure to pack a range of lightweight, breathable layers of clothing. We will do daily activities as planned, unless weather conditions make it dangerous to do so. You may obtain more detailed weather information at www. weatherbase.com.

The best weather in this part of Southeast Asia is generally mid-October thourgh mid-February, when temperatures cool down nicely at night and rainfall is rare.

The peak travel period is from December 15th through January 6th, when hotels are often at capacity and prices spike.

June and July can also be a nice time to visit the region, and those who do will find fewer tourists and decent (if not more variable) weather.

Whether you're sampling snacks at a street-side stall or a high-end restaurant, the cuisine throughout will showcase incredible variety. Regardless of whether you are an adventurous foodie or a complete amateur with Southeast Asian cuisine, this trip will not disappoint.

As you dine across the region, keep in mind that chili peppers weren't found in the region until Portuguese traders introduced them in the 1600s!

Thai cuisine is renowned worldwide for its unique blend of flavors and textures. It's a feast for the senses, with vibrant colors, aromatic scents, and diverse tastes ranging from sweet and sour to spicy and savory. Thailand is home to a plethora of herbs, fruits, and vegetables, and Thai cuisine showcases this diversity in impressive fashion.

Popular dishes like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, and mango with sticky rice are just the beginning, as delicious regional dishes, exotic fruits, and street food abound. From curries and stir-fries to soups and salads, every dish is a celebration of Thailand's rich culinary heritage.

Lao cuisine, is a rich tapestry of flavors and textures. It's often spicy, sour, and packed with fresh herbs. A staple food in Laos is sticky rice, or 'Khao Niew', which is served in small baskets and eaten by hand, often accompanied by a variety of dips, sauces, and side dishes.

Two of the most popular dishes in the country are laab (a type of salad made from minced meat such as pork, chicken, fish, or duck) and Tam Mak Hoong, a spicy salad made from shredded green papaya, tomatoes, chili, lime, fish sauce. It's similar to Thai Som Tam, except that it often includes fermented crab and fish sauce for extra flavor. Fear not - our guides know how to order a modified version for those not quite up for the real deal. Cambodian cuisine, also known as Khmer cuisine, is characterized by its simplicity, freshness, and the use of unique local ingredients. A signature dish that every visitor must try is Fish Amok, a curried fish that is steamed in banana leaves, Other popular items include Bai Sach Chrouk, (pork and rice) and Kuy Teav, a savory noodle soup. Cambodia's most iconic condiment is Prahok, a strong, fermented fish paste that is widely used in Khmer kitchens. It adds a distinct flavor to many Cambodian dishes.

The cuisine of Hanoi and Northern Vietnam offers a unique gastronomic experience. Pho is perhaps the most iconic dish from Hanoi, with broth simmered for hours with spices like star anise and cinnamon, then served with rice noodles, meat, fresh herbs, and lime. Bun Cha, consisting of grilled pork meatballs served with a tangy fish sauce, rice noodles, and a basket of fresh herbs, is another must-try dish. Banh Mi, a French-Vietnamese fusion sandwich, is a popular street food in Hanoi, made with a crusty baguette filled with various meats, pickled vegetables, and herbs. Being so close to the ocean, fresh seafood abounds as well, with fresh oysters, squid, and saltwater fish widely available.

See our in-depth Southeast Asia tour for inspiration .

Southeast Asia offers great value for money. That's one of the reasons it's so popular. In Southeast Asia, a private tour is an affordable luxury.

Our private tours offer you customized options for couples and families (with our one-to-one travel consultant, you can always get in contact to make changes whenever it is convenient for you), more personal space, a more in-depth and less-touristy experience (different to group tours), and a worry-stopping contingency service (24-hour helpline and free cancellation policy ).

  • A typical private tour costs around 200–250 USD per day per person (including airfares within Southeast Asia, 4-/5-star hotel, lunch, attractions, guide and transfers).
  • US$ 250–350 per day per person is needed for the most luxurious arrangements (all the above with 5+ star hotels).
  • 30%–50% off for each kid younger than 10 years old

Thus, for a private family trip with 2 adults and 2 kids, the average cost for a 3-week trip in Southeast Asia would be about 14,000 to 16,000 USD. International airfares are not included.

For a couple, the average cost for a 3-week trip in Southeast Asia would be about 8,500 to 10,000 USD, not including international airfares.

Best Times to Visit Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam

Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam enjoy similar climates because of their close proximity. November to March is the best time to visit with the most sunny and dry weather. Hotel and flight prices rise accordingly however.

One of the busiest times is around Christmas/New Year holiday  when hotels and flights are easily booked up. Due to the high demand, you're suggested to prepare your tour at least 3 months in advance. Let us know your interests and requirements , and we'll take care of everything.

If you want to enjoy nice weather without being surrounded by crowds , late October or early April are particularly good times to visit (the times just before and after the peak season).

June to early October is the rainy season in most parts of Southeast Asia. It may cause some discomfort and inconvenience, but lower prices and smaller crowds are the rewards.

See more on our Best Times to visit Southeast Asia, Worst Times, Rainy Season...

Which Country to Enter First?

Flying to Vietnam or Thailand first is usually the most choice, because Cambodia has fewer options for international flights than the other two countries. But Cambodia offers easy access to/from Thailand and Vietnam, so it's good as the middle country.

Thus, the travel route usually goes Vietnam–Cambodia–Thailand or Thailand–Cambodia–Vietnam.

Going to Thailand or Vietnam first may depend on plane ticket prices, the flight situation from your city, your travel preferences, and so on.

Flights from major U.S. cities to Thailand and Vietnam require transfers. It takes least time to transfer via Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Seoul.

We would work out the best itinerary to match the time of your international flights, leaving time for jet lag recovery and making sure you start your Southeast Asia trip on the right foot.

Contact us if you have any problems. We will give you the best options and suggestions according to your travel time.

How to Travel between Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam

Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh or Siem Reap), and Vietnam (Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City). There are direct flights for these cities. Each journey takes about 1–1½ hours.

We would arrange all transportation within Southeast Asia for you . Your travel consultant would search the flight schedules and book the most suitable connections for you.

Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam all have relaxed entry policies.

Vietnam requires a tourist visa if you're from the US, Canada, Australia, etc. The most convenient way is to apply for an e-visa online . This is a very simple process that just requires you to fill in some information. If you are from certain European countries like the UK, France, Italy, and Germany, you can enjoy visa-free entry.

Cambodia also requires a tourist visa, which can either be obtained online, or when you arrive at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap Airport.

Thailand allows visa-free entry from 64 countries, including the USA, and the UK, Canada, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Norway, etc.

If you have any questions or difficulties in applying, you can contact one of our travel consultants here for help.
