• The estimated time for the route is around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
• From March 15th to October the service starts at 8.30am and finishes at 8.30pm (Monday to Sunday). Last departure at 18.45h. Frequency: 10-15 min.
• From November to March 14th the service starts at 8:30 and ends at 19:30 (Monday to Sunday). Last departure at 17:45h. Frequency: 10-15 min. Ticket office at Termini Station: from Monday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All our buses are equipped with a  ramp accessing the rear door  and a  space set aside for wheelchairs , a continuous low floor platform and a quick kneeling system that tilts the vehicle to the right.

To ensure a smooth service, all passengers should enter by the front door and exit from the rear. Also, our buses have two sets of stairs linking the two levels: the front one should be used to go up and the rear one to go down.

1. The Colosseum

The Colosseum must be one of the city's most thrilling sights . As you stare in awe at it, try and imagine it clad in Travertine stone and marble and supporting a huge canvas awning designed to keep the sun off 50,000 spectators.

In its cavernous underground world , gladiators lived and trained and wild animals were caged ready to be raised up to the crowds in pulley-operated lifts.

Its inaugural games were in 80 AD, when 50,000 animals were slaughtered over 100 days. Abandoned in the 5th century, it was later used as a fortress and its precious Travertine stone and marble stripped to decorate many of Rome's palaces.

2. The Roman Forum

Leave yourself at least a couple of hours to explore the sprawl of ruins that cover the site of the Roman Forum . Building started on the site of an Etruscan burial ground in the 7th century BC, becoming the magnificent central showpiece of the ancient city.

The area was home to temples, public spaces, baths and basilicas and with the help of informative maps and information boards you can still make out the outlines of important buildings and streets, such as the Via Sacra, the Forum's main road and the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated, the Tempio del Divo Giulio.

3. St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica is at the heart of the Vatican City , and is the most spectacular and richest of Italy's churches. St. Peter's is full of beautiful works of art, including La Pietà, Michelangelo's evocative sculpture of Mary and Jesus .

The church took 120 years to construct, eventually being consecrated in 1626. Be prepared to queue to get in and follow the strict dress code of this Catholic place of worship. No mini-dresses, shorts or bare shoulders are allowed in.

4. Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel

Also in the Vatican City are a collection of museums containing some of the world's greatest art works . On show are Etruscan bronzes and Egyptian mummies, frescoes by Raphael and works by Caravaggio and Leonardo da Vinci .

Part of the museum complex contains the Sistine Chapel , or Capella Sistina, where one of the world's most iconic ceilings can be viewed. It is well worth being patient to get a glimpse of this fresco which took took Michelangelo four years to complete, working from a scaffold in a cramped and narrow space.

5. The Trevi Fountain

The eternal city is full of imposing and playful statues, but the Trevi Fountain is probably one of the most iconic . This fountain is known around the world for Anita Ekberg's dip in the film, La Dolce Vita .

Recently restored, this water feature is an over-the-top collection of baroque mythical figures and wild horses. Tradition states that throwing a coin into the fountain will ensure your return to the city. As an average of 3,000 € a day is tossed into its waters, it is apparent many people hope this is true.

6. The Pantheon

This is one of the oldest and most influential buildings in the Western world , having stood for over 2,000 years. Its magnificent bronze, gilded and painted interior belies the rather drab and pock-marked exterior it shows to the world.

The Pantheon has the largest un-reinforced concrete dome ever built in the world. The Pantheon's massive dimensions are perfectly symmetrical, while its most fascinating feature is a central hole, of nearly 9 meters, in the dome.

Symbolically this connects the temple to the gods, but in reality spreads the load of the concrete roof. The interior marble floor is sloped to allow rainwater to drain away without causing damage.

7. Piazza Navona

This ornate square was for many centuries the site of the city's main market . It is still a popular place for street artists and hawkers to entertain tourists while they relax at a street cafe.

The Piazza is surrounded by old baroque palaces and dominated by Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers - the rivers Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate.

8. Villa and Galleria Borghese

This outstanding gallery contains one of the best private art collections in the world , with stunning works by Raphael , Titian , Bernini and Caravaggio .

The collection was put together in the late 16th century by one of the most ruthless art collectors of all times, Cardinal Scipione Borghese.

If you only have time to visit one gallery in the city, then it should be this one. Tickets need to be pre-booked and you will be given a two-hour slot.

9. The Spanish Steps

Nearly every visitor has their photo taken on the Spanish Steps . Built in 1727, they wind their way up from the Piazza di Spagna to the French church, Chiesa della Trinita dei Monti .

At the foot of the steps is an intriguing fountain, the Barcaccia , also known as the 'sinking boat' fountain.

Taking a seat on the Spanish Steps for a while is a great way to rest your legs and people-watch.

10. Castel St. Angelo

This grim and imposing circular palace near the Vatican was built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian .

Over the centuries it has also been a prison, a papal residence and a place of refuge for popes in times of trouble , being linked to the Vatican City by an underground passage.

Visit its museum and then have a coffee on the ramparts, a great way to view the city.

11. Capitol (Campidoglio)

The Capital area is home to the world's oldest public museums and contains some of the finest collection of classical sculpture in Italy .

The entrance to the museum complex is through the Palazzo dei Conservatori, where you'll find a courtyard littered with a huge head, hand and foot.

These are the remains of a 12 meter high statue of Constantine that originally stood in the Roman Forum.

12. Trastevere

The narrow alleys of Trastevere contain some of the most photographed washing in the world , because despite its popularity with the tourists, the area is still very much residential.

At its heart is the lovely Piazza Santa Maria de Trastevere , where locals and tourists mingle day and night.

13. Campo de' Fiori

This square is in the Parione district and used to be a site for races and executions. Today it is home to a busy street market during the day and a popular center of nightlife for youngsters once the sun goes down .

Surrounded by the palaces of medieval nobility, it has always been a place to see and be seen.

14. Circus Maximus

Although there isn't much to see above ground today, the Circus Maximus , where chariot races were regularly held, was enormous, and the largest stadium in the ancient world .

At the height of its glory it was able to seat 250,000 people , a quarter of the ancient city's population.

The original track is still visible in the grassed area today.

15. Mouth of Truth

The Mouth of Truth is a large marble face mask, probably a depiction of the sea god Oceanus, with his eyes, nostrils and mouth open.

It can be found against the wall of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church , in the Piazza della Bocca della Verita.

No-one knows the original purpose of this piece of stone but legends have grown up around it. If you are brave enough to put your hand in its mouth, be sure that you don't tell lies, or it will snap shut on your wrist.

16. Piazza Knights of Malta and Keyhole

This attraction , located on the Avertine Hill , is a little off the beaten track. Look for the sealed door leading to the gardens of the Knights of Malta.

A quirk of fate, or a clever architectural trick, means that if you put your eye to its keyhole you will see the extraordinary site of St. Peter's dome .

17. Giardino degli Aranci

We're coming to the end of our trip around the eternal city and this tranquil Garden of Oranges is the perfect setting to relax for a while , maybe enjoy a picnic or take in one of the shows at its outdoor theater.

Saint Dominic named the garden, presenting the monastery here with its first orange tree. Legend says that Saint Catherine of Siena picked its oranges, which she candied and presented to Pope Urban VI.

18. Tiber Island

Tiber Island is a place of mystery and shrouded in legend . It is linked to the banks of the river by the first stone bridge built in the city, the Ponto Rotto, or broken bridge.

Shaped like an ancient Roman warship, the island held a small fort in the middle ages and has always had links with healing.

Its spring is said to hold health-giving water, which was thought to have been effective during medieval plagues.

19. Baths of Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla sit near the Appian Way and were built by prisoners and slaves on the orders of Emperor Caracalla.

The complex was huge, and its imposing ruins are still visible today. These, along with a fascinating museum, provide us with a glimpse into an ancient world . Originally clad with marble, and covered in bright frescoes and mosaics , these baths would have been used by up to 6,000 Roman citizens a day.

It is worth seeing them floodlit at night, or trying to get tickets to one of the operas regularly held in their grounds during the summer months.

20. Piazza del Popolo

The Piazza del Popolo sits to the north of the city, where three famous streets meet - Via del Corso , Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta . These streets are home to many high-class shops and boutiques.

This enormous square opens out from the gate through the Aurelian Walls, and was the first sight visitors had of the city when arriving from the north. The Piazza has been remodeled many times over the centuries and is now connected to a park on the Pincio Hill above it by a curving flight of stairs.

The design of this flight gives the appearance of trees and plants cascading down into the square below. The Piazza del Popolo contains an Egyptian obelisk and is surrounded by three churches dedicated to the Virgin .

• Piazza del Popolo can be accessed by taking Metro line A and exiting at Flamino station.  Explore Piazza del Popolo then climb the stairs to the Pincio Hill garden. From here, the Borghese Gardens are a 10 minute walk. Villa Borghese is immense and has nine different entry points (including from the top of the Spanish steps).

The gardens are 80 hectares of beautifully landscaped park. There are numerous walking trails including options to rent a bike. Campo de’ Fiori means “field of flowers” and describes how the landscape looked in the middle ages. The Piazza is just south of Piazza Navarone. In ancient Rome this land was undeveloped and eventually the Santa Brigida Church was built. Just south of the square the Palazzo Farnese was constructed. The palace was an imposing Italian palace when it was built for the prominent Farnese family in the 16th centaury. Eventually the square itself became the commercial center of Rome and the streets were named after the trades such as Via dei Baullari  (coffer-makers), Via dei Balestrari  ( crossbow -makers),  Via dei Giubbonari  (tailors), Via dei Cappellari  (hat-makers), and Via dei Chiavari  (key-makers).
• From Campo de’Fiore” head over to Largo di Torre Argentin . Largo di Torre Argentin is a square that includes a Square with Porticos. Colonnades, Curia, Roman Temples, the remains of Pompey’s theater and the place where Julius Caesar was murdered. He was assassinated in the Curia of Pompey. Excavation of this area began in 1929
• Rome Walking Tour 8 : The next stop on the Rome Walking tour is the attractions around the historic center of the ancient City of Rome. Attractions include Trajan’s Column, Trajan’s Market and Trajan’s Form . In the area is Palazzo Napoleon’s including the apartment he occupied while in Rome

• Using it online – We bring one of our older smart phones when we travel and buy a local SIM card. You can purchase a local tourist SIM card from one of the main local providers, they are usually pretty inexpensive. You may need your passport to purchase as its a tourist SIM if you are an international tourist. You should have them put it in your old smartphone and check that it works before leaving the store. Use it to follow the map online, its the best way to explore

Sign into google using your Gmail account on your smart phone and be connected to the internet. If you do not sign in, this process will not work . You will be downloading this map to save it. You will be saving it in google maps in two places:

• Save in “Your Places” for online use and
• Save in “Offline map” for offline use

Instructions to save above map:

• Click on the rectangle on the top right hand side of the above map [ ] – if you move your mouse to it, it will say “view larger map”
• It will take you into google maps on your smartphone and it will automatically save this map. You must be already be signed into google maps with your Gmail account, if you are not signed into google maps then the map will not be saved
• In google maps, click on the menu which is the three horizontal lines on the top left of the google map (it is to the left of the search box)
• From the menu, click on “Your Places”. This will take you to another screen with a menu at the top. From the top menu bar select “maps”. A list of your maps will be displayed including the map that was just saved. Select the map you just saved
• Make sure the map is still onscreen; do not close out of it as you will be downloading this map and it has to be onscreen to download. While the map is onscreen, click on menu again (three horizontal lines top left hand corner)
• Select “Offline maps” then select “custom map”
• Once you select “custom map”, the onscreen map will be displayed; select the area you want downloaded (zoom in or out to get all the data points into the blue square outline; pinch fingers for zooming)
• Click on “download” – this will save the map in an offline area that you can use when you are not connected to the internet

The map is now saved in two places. To see this, click on the menu (three horizontal line on top right hand corner) in google maps:

• Click on “Your Places” from the menu, then select “Custom Map”. The map will be listed and you can use the map while connected to the internet
• Click on “Offline Maps” from the menu. The map will be listed to use the map offline ie: not connected to the internet (make sure location services is turned on and your will see the blue dot indicating your location as you navigate with the offline map)
• After you download a map, use the Google Maps app just like you normally would. If your Internet connection is slow or absent, or if you are in “airplane mode” Google Maps will automatically use your offline maps to give you directions

We picked a bad day to do the bus trip. It was pouring with rain, the bus was packed with wet passengers so the bus had steamed up. Viewing was difficult. However we got up stairs things did improve. The courier on board was brilliant though trying to be positive an point out things

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy. 

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour 

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure. 

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City 

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty. 

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe 

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto 

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.
