BMW Cruise bike: review

Nothing beats cruising round town in a BMW – but now you can do it on two wheels

P eugeot, Skoda, Rover… there are lots of car manufacturers which first made their name as bike builders. But here is one going the other way. BMW’s Cruise bike is a distinctive update of the original Californian cruisers which launched the mountain bike craze back in the 80s.

It’s all sleek lines and minimal detailing: the white paint job and blue rims are very Beemer in their aesthetic. The only other hint of its provenance is a discreet BMW badge lurking on the head lug. It has 30 slick Shimano gears, hardcore disc brakes and chunky tyres to ward off glass shards outside pubs.

This is very much a comfy commuter: a Boris bike on steroids. It’s also pretty hefty, but it soaks up the bumps and is perfect for cruising round the city with just a hint of German class ( shop.bmw.com ).

Reflected glory: Proviz REFLECT360+

This time last year I bought a reflective cycling jacket – or rather my wife did in a bid to keep me safe on the roads while commuting. Now, BMW is complimenting its bicycle collection in spring 2015 with the presentation of a colorful tribute to the BMW M automobiles: a limited special edition BMW Cruise M-Bike. The characteristic Austin Yellow Metallic of the BMW M GmbH was adapted for this edition, which has been limited to 500 exemplars. Each model of the limited edition comes with a specially made plaque and a certificate.

The BMW Cruise M-Bike stands out with its modern design and lightweight construction elements. An optical highlight is the so-called “Bullneck” on the top tube in the front frame, which was borrowed from motorcycle design and is reminiscent of the tank position. Its hydro-formed aluminum frame and carbon components make the BMW Cruise M-Bike both light and stable.

Despite its low weight, the frame is very rigid, which ensures maximum power transmission at the lowest possible effort. The ergonomic handlebar concept, which is individually adjustable, allows for a comfortable ride, while the hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano guarantee a safe arrival.

BMW Debuts the Cruise M Bike Limited Edition

BMW is always looking towards innovation and style when they come out with a new model. This, though, is something we didn’t even expect.

Recently, BMW released the much-awaited M2 for sale, and to commemorate the M2, they are now launching the BMW Cruise M Bike Limited Edition. The bicycle is finished in the same Long Beach Blue color as the M2 and features a high-quality, light-weight aluminum frame and is limited to the production of 1,500 units. The design, which is complemented by “high-quality technical components” like a carbon seat post and spacer, give the bike a signature feeling on the road– just like the performance expected from a BMW. It also includes larger wheels and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. The bike is suited for the long, open road or mountainous terrain.

Today BMW surprises with some unusual news or at least, unusual to us. We have just showed you the BMW Kidsbike , a bicycle for toddlers and children age of five, but now, for those of us that are past the toddlers phase, BMW has a Cruise Bike and a Touring Bike.

The BMW Cruise Bike with 24 speed derailleur system, is available in red and pearl white and is an optimum choice for day trips. In contrast to other bikes, its stem can be individually adjusted to suit the stature of any rider. Price? Not on the cheap side of course, in the end it’s still a BMW: € 849 or $1,190.

BMW Touring Bike with 9-speed hub system is only available in pearl white and BMW sees it as being ideal for all cyclists who mainly ride in urban traffic situations. It’s built on the same frame as the Cruise Bike, but it includes a rear luggage rack as well as street fittings. Price has been setup according to the luxury standards: € 1.299 or $1,816.

Munich. In Germany, cycling tours are becoming more and more popular. In its survey published in March 2009, the German Tourism Association (DTV) registered 153 million one-day tours every year. The average one-way distance of these tours was 69 kilometres. Although a part of this distance relates to travelling to the starting point by road or rail, half of the day trippers subsequently cycled up to 25 kilometres – and back. The design award winning BMW Cruise Bike is not only ideal for such long tours, but also for shorter rides.

Comfortable and convenient. The BMW Cruise Bike is the optimum choice for day trips – no matter whether you want to make a countryside tour over the weekend or spend a holiday cycling along the coast. In contrast to other bikes, its stem can be individually adjusted to suit the stature of any rider. For instance, riders can now cruise comfortably on long-distance tours. The back pains resulting from the rider’s bent position when riding some bikes are now a thing of the past. The BMW Touring Bike is ideal for all cyclists who mainly ride in urban traffic situations. It has the same frame as the Cruise Bike, but additionally features a rear luggage rack as well as street fittings.

Stable and safe. The sporty spirit of the BMW Cruise Bike is revealed not only in its special stem and its looks. Its frame is manufactured on the basis of innovative hydroforming technology, a process in which the aluminium tubes are filled with oil and shaped by extreme pressure. This results in a light and, above all, rigid frame. In combination with its resilient telescopic forks and Shimano Alivio gears, this means that even deep potholes, extreme gradients and racy sprints present no problems at all to its rider.

Purist prize material. The exciting looks of the bike finished in red and pearl white are an absolute winner too. BMW, with its 60-year heritage of bicycle manufacturing, has already won numerous design awards. In addition to winning the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany and the if Product Design Award, the BMW Cruise Bike has now won the Red Dot Award for the second time.

A mini bike for maximum fun. The 20-inch tall BMW Cruise Bike Junior is the “little brother” of the BMW Cruise Bike. Like its older sibling, it has been distinguished with the red dot design award for its attention-grabbing design. The sturdy aluminium frame is built to work in perfect harmony with the dimensions of a child, and its integrated components allow girls and boys to control their bikes with ease. An emergency stop is no problem with the two independently adjustable brake levers and smoothly-operating rim brakes, and a comfortable ride is guaranteed even when cycling along bumpy gravel paths thanks to the suspended front wheel fork, which is specially adapted to the weight of a child. Uphill cycling requires minimum effort with the help of the six-gear Shimano grip-shift lever. Added safety features include the front, back, pedal and spoke reflectors and a bell.
