Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sightseeing tour led by Thomas Markle’s friend sparks outrage over privacy
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
A celebrity sightseeing tour that promises to take passengers within feet of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ’s Montecito home has sparked backlash over privacy concerns.
The bus tour - advertised as the “Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito” - is being led by photographer Karl Larsen, a close friend of Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle . According to The Mirror , each tour costs $1,200 (£958.84) for a group of six.
A listing for the sightseeing tour first popped up on the site Tripening, where it was advertised alongside a photo of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sharing a kiss at a polo match in Santa Barbara. The description for the Royal Celebrity Tour, written by Larsen, read: “I’m the world-famous celebrity photographer Karl Larsen, a best friend of Thomas Markle (Meghan’s father) and the guy with a stunning exclusive portfolio of pictures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle together in Montecito.”
Larsen described himself as the “only person in the world” who “knows the truth about what happened between Meghan Markle and her father” ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018. “I am the only person who has an open communication pathway between Meghan’s camp and the rest of the Markle family,” he wrote. “There is nobody on the planet that knows more info that [sic] me and I’m the only person that’s qualified to put on such a tour.”
The listing promised that passengers would get “an in-depth tour” of “where Meghan grew up” and the beachside California town “where Harry and Meghan and an army of other A-listers call home”.
The tour aims to take tourists to Harry and Meghan’s favourite Montecito hangouts, the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club where the royals shared a kiss last year, Meghan’s old homes and schools in Los Angeles, and a road close to the Sussexes’ Montecito estate. There are also plans, according to the Mirror , to expand the trip to Rosarito, Mexico - where fans can meet Thomas Markle.
As fans caught wind of the Royal Celebrity Tour, many people took to social media to share their disapproval of the bus tour. Christopher Bouzy, a tech entrepreneur who appeared in Netflix’s Harry and Meghan docuseries, expressed his concerns that the tour could open the couple up to “harassment” from tourists. His tech firm, Bot Sentinel, led research into online trolls targeting the Sussexes.
“The harassment of Harry and Meghan is escalating, and now these deranged people are taking their harassment offline while trying to profit off their harassment. This is sick,” he wrote on his social networking site, Spoutible .
“This is sick,” one user replied , while another said : “Craziness indeed.”
In response to the backlash, the official account for Tripening posted on X - formally known as Twitter - that they removed the Royal Celebrity Tour listing from its website. “Thanks for the heads up! We removed that tour from sale,” Tripening said.
Meanwhile, Larsen launched a YouTube channel with Meghan’s father, called “Remarkable Friendship”, in March 2022. In one episode, the photographer reportedly suggested that Thomas should buy the house next door to Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, which was on sale at the time.
Speaking to Newsweek about the Royal Celebrity Tour, Larsen clarified that he had “no intentions” of going past Harry and Meghan’s house, just where the actor grew up in Los Angeles. “I want to have the tour be available where she grew up. We’re going to go to Montecito but just places they go to, restaurants they go to,” he told the outlet. “It’s a custom tour so if people want to go see other sights that’s what we’re going to do but we will not go past Doria’s house and we will not go past Harry and Meghan’s.”
He added that the online backlash to the tour will not stop it from going ahead, saying: “This is not going to be the end of the tour.”
After stepping down as senior members of the royal family in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan briefly relocated to Canada with their son, Archie, before finding a permanent residence in Montecito, California. At the time, Harry said he hoped their decision would lead to a “quieter life” as they continue to raise their four-year-old son and their two-year-old daughter, Lilibet, in the states.
The backlash to the Royal Celebrity Tour comes amid Harry’s ongoing legal battle against a number of UK newspapers for an alleged invasion of privacy. During the couple’s bombshell sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Meghan also spoke of a desire for privacy. “I think everyone has a basic right to privacy. Basic. We’re not talking about anything that anybody else wouldn’t expect,” she said.
However, the Sussexes’ thoughts about privacy were infamously parodied in a recent episode of South Park . A spokesperson for the royal couple previously refuted claims that Harry and Meghan stepped back from the royal family because they wanted privacy , pointing out that the duke and duchess never said a desire for privacy was a factor in their decision.
“Their statement announcing their decision to step back mentions nothing of privacy and reiterates their desire to continue their roles and public duties,” Ashley Hansen, the couple’s global press secretary, told the New York Times. “They are choosing to share their story, on their terms, and yet the tabloid media has created an entirely untrue narrative that permeates press coverage and public opinion. The facts are right in front of them.”
The Independent has contacted Larsen and the Sussexes for comment.

Meghan Markle’s father denies involvement in Harry and Meghan’s ‘tacky’ Montecito tour

Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, is denying involvement in a royal sightseeing tour — organized by his friend, photographer Karl Larsen — that has been halted over privacy concerns.
“I never gave my approval to Karl Larsen for any tour anywhere,” Markle, 79, told Mail Online Royals on Tuesday. “I am not involved in any way.”
The excursion was advertised on travel firm Tripening’s website as the “Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito.”
Potential sightseers (up to six at a time) were promised an “in-depth tour” of the area where Meghan, 42, grew up and where Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, 38, call home.
The Post reached out to reps for Meghan Markle and her father, as well as Tripening for comment.
Details about the tour — which costs $1,200 for the group of six — were later scrubbed from the website following backlash.
In the since-deleted ad viewed by The Post, Larsen wrote in the description, “I’m the world-famous celebrity photographer Karl Larsen, a best friend of Thomas Markle (Meghan’s father) and the guy with a stunning exclusive portfolio of pictures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle together in Montecito.”
Passengers were supposed to be taken to the royal couple’s famous hangouts in Montecito, including various eateries and the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.
In the listing, Larsen claimed he is the only one who has an “open communication pathway” between Markle’s camp and the rest of her family, much of whom she is estranged from.
“I am the only person who has an open communication pathway between Meghan’s camp and the rest of the Markle family,” he wrote in the listing.
“There is nobody on the planet that knows more info that [sic] me and I’m the only person that’s qualified to put on such a tour.”
Not only has Markle’s father denied involvement, but so has her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr.
“Under no circumstances whatsoever did my father or myself ever agree or be aware of being involved in such a ridiculous cheesy embarrassing idea of being involved in a tour bus business with Karl Larsen,” he wrote in a Tuesday statement on Instagram.
“And furthermore, it is against the law to use somebody’s name for advertising without their written permission, and a prior business agreement.”
In recent years, Markle has had quite a strained relationship with her father, whom she was once close to. Their bond soured shortly before Meghan’s 2018 wedding to Harry.
The Hollywood director suffered a stroke last year and has publicly pleaded to reconnect with his daughter to repair their relationship.
Now there’s outrage about the tour, especially from tech entrepreneur Christopher Bouzy, who called it “harassment” of the royal couple.
“The recent incident where a celebrity tour was being organized to visit the neighborhood of the Duke and Duchess’s residence is a concerning escalation of online harassment transitioning to the real world,” Bouzy told Newsweek on Tuesday.
“The problematic listing was an act of targeted harassment, and it jeopardized the safety of the Duke and Duchess’s family.”
In response, Larsen claimed he had “no intentions” of driving past the Sussexes’ house.
He added: “This is not going to be the end of the tour.”

'Not involved in any way': Thomas Markle Senior distances himself from controversial royal sightseeing bus tour
Meghan Markle’s estranged father Thomas Markle Senior has broken his silence on a controversial bus tour that visits Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's neighbourhood in Montecito.
Meghan Markle’s estranged father Thomas Markle Senior has denied claims he is involved in a royal sightseeing tour which will take tourists past Prince Harry and Meghan’s Montecito mansion.
Announced earlier this week, The Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito was created by celebrity paparazzi photographer Karl Larsen and promises to show tourists Harry and Meghan's "favourite restaurants" along with "Prince Harry's favourite location to walk his dog".
According to a listing on travel agency website Tripening, the nine-hour tour costs about $1,900 for groups of six and spans the Los Angeles neighbourhood where Meghan grew up through to their current home in Montecito.
The bus tour begins in Los Angeles, where stops include the "private high school where Thomas Markle paid for Meghan to go" and "Meghan Markle's very first childhood home".
Mr Larsen hinted the tour could even cross the United States border into Rosarito, Mexico, so fans can meet Meghan's father, and claimed Markle Sr is on board with the venture.
"I've talked to Thomas about the tour and he said, 'Oh my God, you might have a winner there," he told The Mirror.
"I've also asked if we could go see him and he said, 'Hold that thought.' So hopefully one day… I've always thought I could turn what I know about Meghan and Harry into a tour."
However, Markle Sr has publicly distanced himself from Mr Larsen and denied any involvement in the venture.
"I never gave my approval to Karl Larsen for any tour anywhere. I am not involved in any way," he told The Daily Mail on Wednesday.
A source close to the former lighting director doubled down that Meghan's father would never betray Meghan with a "tacky" bus tour despite participating in paid TV interviews about his famous daughter.
"The claim that somehow Tom is involved in this tacky and, frankly, exploitative tour is 100 per cent false and has left Tom angry and deeply distressed," the source told the Mail.
"There is no truth to any of it. He would never lend his name to something like this."
The royal bus tour has caused outrage online, with many considering the gimmick a gross invasion of the Sussexes’ privacy and personal safety.
Following the backlash, travel agency Tripening has now removed the experience from its platform.
Despite the uproar, Mr Larsen insisted "this is not going to be the end of the tour" and compared the Sussexes to Elvis.
"This tour is designed for people who like Harry and Meghan, it's like going to see Elvis, going to Graceland because they like Elvis," he told Newsweek.

There’s Apparently Now a Guided Tour That Will Take You by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito Home and Hangouts They Frequent
Katy Perry’s and Cameron Diaz’s homes are also included on the tour.
Tours around the Los Angeles area—Beverly Hills, Hollywood, you name it—to look at celebrity homes is nothing new. But this is: according to The Mirror , a new sightseeing venture promises to take passengers on a “royal tour,” driving them within feet of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito estate, where, for the price of £958.84 for a group of six, you can get a guided tour of not just their home (or as close as a tour bus can get, anyway) but also the couple’s favorite hangouts around town.
In a plot twist, The Mirror reports, the tour is being run by a friend of Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle —and photographer Karl Larsen claims Thomas approves. (Somehow this doesn’t surprise us.) “The tour takes in a road close to the Sussexes’ £11M home as well as Meghan’s favorite shops and restaurants and the polo club where she kissed Harry last year,” the outlet reports. The tour will also feature Meghan’s old Los Angeles-area homes and schools; “there are even plans to expand the trip to Rosarito, in Mexico, so fans can meet Thomas, who fell out with Meghan before her 2018 marriage to Harry,” The Mirror writes. Passengers will also drive by the homes of other celebrities, like Katy Perry and Cameron Diaz.
“I’ve talked to Thomas about the tour, and he said, ‘Oh my God, you might have a winner there,’” Larsen said. “I’ve also asked if we could go see him and he said, ‘Hold that thought.’ So hopefully one day. I’ve always thought I could turn what I know about Meghan and Harry into a tour. I’m sure it’s interesting to many people.”

11 stops for a royal road trip around Montecito, California
August 8, 2022 // By Wendy O'Dea
By Wendy O'Dea Los Angeles Local Expert August 8, 2022
While the village of Montecito gained notoriety when Oprah and Ellen moved to the area years ago, curiosity about this wealthy enclave skyrocketed since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made it their home a few years ago. The royal couple is said to have chosen Montecito because of its small-town feel yet close proximity to Los Angeles , which is about 90 miles south. It doesn’t hurt that most of the mansions dotting the hillside of the Santa Ynez Mountains include stunning views of the Pacific.
But Montecito is so much more than that. For anyone planning a (royal) road trip up the Pacific Coast Highway, here are some spots to check out if you want to live like a royal in Montecito and neighboring Santa Barbara , some of which have been patronized by the (former) royals themselves.
Where to stay
El Encanto, A Belmond Property, Santa Barbara
Advertisement Advertisement
Set in what was long ago dubbed the American Riviera due to its spectacular hillside coastal views (similar to those along the French Riviera), El Encanto is a few miles north of Montecito, past the historic Mission Santa Barbara. Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman rooms, suites and bungalows are set among seven acres that overlook the Pacific Ocean and Santa Barbara Pier.
The property has been reinventing itself for over 100 years, most recently as a wellness destination. The Spa at El Encanto features seven treatment rooms that include the option to receive a massage or facial while lying on an infrared mat designed to align with the body’s seven chakras. Guests are also invited to participate in a complimentary weekly sound bath meditation with local expert, Cristy Candler.
San Ysidro Ranch
Feeling royal will be easy for anyone checking into this magical resort located a few miles from Harry and Meghan’s home base. Thirty-eight cottage suites along the banks of San Ysidro Creek and the resort's 550 acres are surrounded by the lush flora and fauna in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains. The property has checked in an impressive roster of guests over its 129-year history, including Winston Churchill, Groucho Marx and Jackie and John F. Kennedy who honeymooned in the now aptly named Kennedy Cottage.
The resort’s restaurant, the Stonehouse, and the more relaxed Plow & Angel Pub are also said to be favorites among notable names such as Julia Child, who called Montecito home. The Stonehouse has also been named a Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning restaurant as its barrel-vaulted wine cellar houses 12,000 bottles, including a 120-bottle complete vertical of Pomerol’s Château Pétrus with vintages dating back to 1945.
For unrivaled private dining, guests can book dinner in the Old Adobe – a historic landmark dating to 1825 – or in the soon-to-be-completed dining room being built adjacent to the wine cellar. Also notable: San Ysidro Ranch is believed to be the only resort in the country that provides an electric car charging station for every cottage.
Palihouse Santa Barbara
For those who are interested in checking out the area but are seeking a more central location, look no further than Palihouse Santa Barbara . This charming two-story boutique property is located in the Presidio neighborhood, a few blocks from Santa Barbara’s pedestrian and shopping areas.
Dripping with soft, earthy-tone furnishings, many of the rooms are like tiny apartments complete with a fireplace, SMEG fridge and Insta-worthy bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. Amenities include Linus bicycles available for use by guests at no charge, free underground parking and a number of treats for pets as part of their “Pawlisociety.”
Where to eat
A little bird may have mentioned that Harry & Meghan once dined in a private dining room at this trendy restaurant that was once a fish-packing plant. In the heart of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone arts district, Executive Chef Jason Paluska is plating up innovative dishes that are served family style in a space that feels both industrial and clever.
The restaurant is named for an overnight Pullman train that serviced Santa Barbara from the early to mid-1900s, and the cocktail menu plays off this with drinks such as the Twisted Trails (guava, lime, Dolin dry vermouth, Ypioca cachaça and sparkling wine). The menu has plenty of options for both vegetarians and carnivores alike, including crispy Brussels sprouts with dates, sesame, garum and lime, as well as pork ribs with caramelized peach and black pepper glaze with citrus pickled fennel and pollen.
Don’t be fooled by the strip mall appearance of the Montecito Country Mart because, despite the fact that the first thing people see is the retro Vons supermarket, there are a lot of treasures to be discovered in this shopping center where Meghan Markle has been spotted on occasion. One of those treasures is Bettina , an artisan pizzeria (with a Bib Gourmand designation from the Michelin guide) that specializes in naturally leavened, rustic wood-fired pizzas using ingredients sourced directly from local farmers.
Pizzas include a stellar prosciutto di Parma speckled with olives, rosemary, garlic and chili oil, and the Root’s corn pizza with pork 'nduja, mozzarella, goat cheddar and walla walla onions. Not into pizza? Try the cacio e pepe arancini or the locally caught crudo. Menu items also include options for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners.
Finch & Fork
On the main floor of the Kimpton Canary Hotel is the recently revamped Finch & Fork where the casual ambiance may give a false sense of simple, casual cuisine. Instead, Executive Chef Craig Riker has taken traditional dishes and given them a whimsical and polished spin, such as the F&F deviled eggs which arrive looking like they’ve been sunning themselves. A coral pink-tinted egg white (that’s from the beet marinade) is topped with a creamy filling and pickled shallots, Cajun maple pork belly and a sprinkle of chives creating a pleasantly balanced party in the mouth.
The seared diver scallops sit on a bed of deep green Acquerello risotto with serrano ham, artichokes and grana padano cheese. This definitely isn’t your grandma’s hotel lobby restaurant – unless your grandma is a sophisticated foodie.
Things to do
Hiking and cycling
Given the temperate climate and stunning beauty of the region, it’s no surprise that Santa Barbara has endless options of outdoor activities. In addition to miles and miles of hiking trails – both in the mountains and along the coast – there is also a paved (and relatively flat) bike path that stretches from Montecito north along Butterfly Beach and the Santa Barbara coast.
On Montecito’s Coast Village Road, the bike shop Mad Dogs & Englishmen rents out a variety of bicycles, including e-bikes which can help power anyone up through the hills and past the mansions of millionaires. There are also some pristine and challenging hiking trails in the foothills, including the Inspiration Point and Gibraltar trails.
Museum life
Though Santa Barbara is a relatively small city, it has an impressive array of cultural activities, including a lineup of museums that appeals to people of all ages – perhaps another reason why Harry and Meghan chose the area for their growing family.
These include the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and its seasonal Butterflies Alive exhibit (a favorite of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, who also live in the area), the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, the MOXI Science Museum and the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2022.
Historic Casa del Herrero
Built in 1925 for businessman and inventor George Fox Steedman, this Spanish Colonial home with Moorish influences is now a historical landmark and is one of the best remaining examples of architecture for which Santa Barbara is known.
Designed by George Washington Smith, the house remains now as it was when the family lived in it, furnished with one-of-a-kind antiquities curated by architectural historian Arthur Byne (who also furnished Hearst Castle, by the way). The Casa is closed to the public except during docent-led tours which can be booked in advanced on Wednesdays or Saturdays.
Local polo matches
If you know anything about Prince Harry, then you’re probably aware that he’s an avid polo player. Since moving to Montecito, Harry has been spotted playing with local polo clubs at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, one of the most prestigious equestrian venues in the U.S. The Club also offers events such as Ladies Hat Day. Most matches take place on the weekend and tickets are required. They can be prearranged and purchased on the club's website .
Shop Coast Village Road
Every upscale neighborhood has its share of boutiques, bars and bakeries, and in Montecito, they're found on Coast Village Road, which runs adjacent to Pacific Coast Highway. There are a couple of notable cafés/bakeries (Bree’osh and Jeannine’s, to name a few) and trendy clothing shops such as Johnny Was.
The Sussexes have been spotted frequenting a number of these local businesses, including the Pierre Lafond Montecito Market and Lucky’s Steakhouse, where they dined with composer David Foster and singer Katherine McPhee soon after moving to the neighborhood.

Anger over tour bus that takes fans ‘within feet’ of Harry and Meghan’s mansion
Share this with
A sightseeing bus that promises to take people ‘within feet’ of Prince Harry and Meghan’s massive California mansion has sparked privacy concerns.
What’s more the ‘Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito’ – is being led by photographer Karl Larsen, 54, a close friend of Meghan’s estranged dad Thomas Markle.
According to The Mirror , each tour costs $1,200 (£958.84) for a group of six people.
People who are rich enough to afford the tour will get to stalk all of the couple’s favourite spots in their adopted hometown.
These include all of Meghan’s favourite shops and restaurants and the polo club where she lovingly kissed Harry.
Celebrity obsessed fans will be thrilled to find out they can also drive by the homes of other celebs like Katy Perry and Cameron Diaz.
The bus also goes through LA, where fans will see Meghan’s old home and her old school.
And there are even plans to extend the trip to Rosarito, in Mexico, so people can meet Thomas, who fell out with Meghan in 2018.
The description for the tour, written by Larsen, read: ‘I’m the world-famous celebrity photographer Karl Larsen, a best friend of Thomas Markle (Meghan’s dad) and the guy with a stunning exclusive portfolio of pictures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle together in Montecito.’
‘I am the only person who has an open communication pathway between Meghan’s camp and the rest of the Markle family.
‘There is nobody on the planet that knows more info than [sic] me and I’m the only person that’s qualified to put on such a tour.’
Larsen who hosted a YouTube show with the Duchess’s dad said: ‘I’ve talked to Thomas about the tour and he said, “Oh my God, you might have a winner there.”‘
‘I’ve also asked if we could go see him and he said, “Hold that thought.” So hopefully one day… I’ve always thought I could turn what I know about Meghan and Harry into a tour. I’m sure it’s interesting to many people.’
But Christopher Bouzy, a tech entrepreneur who appeared in Netflix’s Harry and Meghan docuseries, expressed concern it could open up the couple to ‘harassment’ from tourists.
‘The harassment of Harry and Meghan is escalating, and now these deranged people are taking their harassment offline while trying to profit off their harassment. This is sick,’ he wrote on his social networking site Spoutbible.

The tour, called The Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito , promises to show tourists Prince Harry and Meghan's "favourite restaurants" along with "Prince Harry's favourite location to walk his dog".

On the way from LA to Montecito, the bus will pass the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club "to touch the grass that both Prince Harry and Prince William have played polo on".
Larsen hinted the tour could be extended to Rosarito, in Mexico, so fans can meet Meghan's father.
"I've talked to Thomas about the tour and he said, 'Oh my God, you might have a winner there," he said, according to The Mirror .
"I've also asked if we could go see him and he said, 'Hold that thought.' So hopefully one day… I've always thought I could turn what I know about Meghan and Harry into a tour.
"I'm sure it's interesting to many people."
But now, Markle says he's got nothing to do with the tour.
He's told Mail Online Royals: "I never gave my approval to Karl Larsen for any tour anywhere. I am not involved in any way."

A source close to Markle added: "The claim that somehow Tom is involved in this tacky and, frankly, exploitative tour is 100 per cent false and has left Tom angry and deeply distressed. There is no truth to any of it. He would never lend his name to something like this.
"Tom is not close friends with Karl Larsen."
Markle's son, Tom Jnr, said: "Under no circumstances whatsoever did my father ever agree – or was even aware of – such a ridiculously cheesy and embarrassing idea of being involved in a tour bus business with Karl Larsen…who has no authorisation to use my father's name in any ad campaign for a cheesy Hollywood tour van business. What kind of person does that?"

On the tour listing via Viator.com, Larsen describes himself as "the world-famous celebrity photographer Karl Larsen, a best friend of Thomas Markle (Meghan's father) and the guy with a stunning exclusive portfolio of pictures of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle together in Montecito".
He claims to be "the ONLY person in the world that knows the truth about what happened between Meghan Markle and her father ahead her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018".
"And I am the only person who has an open communication pathway between Meghan's camp and the rest of the Markle family.
"There is nobody on the planet that knows more info that me and I'm the only person that's qualified to put on such a tour."
However, the tour has since been removed from Viator's website.

The Sussexes "secured a $9.5 million mortgage" to purchase the Santa Barbara property.
The Sussexes bought their home without royal family help.
In August 2020, a source told Us Weekly that, while they could've asked Prince Charles for financial help, Meghan and Harry decided to purchase their new home independently. Per Us Weekly 's source, "Harry could’ve asked [Prince] Charles to contribute toward the cost of the house, but he chose not to ... Getting his dad financially involved would result in the royals having control over him. It would mean going backwards."
Per Variety , Meghan and Harry's new home cost $14.65 million, and "the buyers secured a $9.5 million mortgage to acquire the 7.4-acre compound, which is securely tucked away on a private, gated street."
They chose Santa Barbara for its privacy.
In August 2020, a spokesperson for the Sussexes told People , "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year. ... Thomas Markle’s Friend Is Behind The ‘Bus Tour’ Of Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Montecito Home
Talking about invading one’s privacy and crossing boundaries that certainly should not be crossed. There’s a new report that says Thomas Markle’s friend is behind the new ‘bus tour’ idea that was supposed to take celebrity fans to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito home for a closer look at their day-to-day lives. Fortunately, the bus tour has been canceled, but the fact that someone would even do this is certainly raising a lot of eyebrows. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.
Reports say that Karl Lasen, a celebrity photographer, wanted to give fans a closer look into the lives of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by offering a bus tour called the “Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito.”
And get this: Karl is supposedly a good friend of Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle.
The tour would have cost over $1,000 for a group of six people and it would have also included a visit to the couple’s $14 million dollar home in Montecito, some of Harry and Meghan’s favorite shops and restaurants and the Santa Barbara polo club where Harry likes to play polo with his local club. The tour would have also included some places that were near and dear to Meghan’s childhood in Los Angeles, including her Catholic school.
The Celebrity Tour Bus That Never Happened
Thankfully, the moment that the tour plans were revealed, it received some incredible backlash from both sides of the pond. Of course, there were some people who said that they would never pay that amount of money to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s home while others couldn’t believe that anyone would come up with this kind of idea, seeing how it would put Harry and Meghan’s family in danger.
It goes without saying that Harry and Meghan have made not comments about the matter, but there’s no doubt in anyone’s minds that they would have stopped this tour from happening, should it have gotten the green light.

Listing of the Day
Location: Montecito, California
Price: $33.5 million
This lavish Mediterranean-style estate in the heart of Montecito is where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, filmed last year’s Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan.”
The 2-acre estate, which is just a few minutes from the couple’s own Montecito home, offers lushly planted and very private grounds and unobstructed mountain and ocean views. The home’s TV appearance highlights a sun-drenched living room, from which the royal couple spoke in the documentary—the dining room chandelier subtly glittering over Meghan’s shoulder.
The show offers only a peek inside a massive home spanning more than 13,000 square feet on the inside alone.“Flexible spaces both inside and out make this an intimate home for two yet can easily accommodate crowds of over 200,” according to the listing with Ryan Malmsten, of Santa Barbara Brokers and Riskin Partners Estate Group, who declined to comment further.
The 2006 house was designed by the architects J.F. Brennan and Don Nulty and built by Jay Hanseth, with interior designs by Natasha Baradaran.
“Living off the grid has never been more chic,” according to the listing, with sustainable features that include four chicken coops, a beehive, a gray-water irrigation system, a private well, an organic vegetable garden, 35 fruit trees and a solar system that powers the lights, appliances, and laundry.
Architectural and design details inside the home include double-height arched windows, coffered ceilings, French doors, tile roofing, a central vacuum, mahogany doors and windows, and a mix of white oak, travertine and marble flooring.
The remodeled eat-in kitchen offers a butler’s pantry, travertine and Carrara marble countertops, and new appliances by Miele, Bertazzoni and Viking. There is also a breakfast room bar and a formal dining room along with large family and living rooms on the main level.
The ground-floor primary bedroom suite has access to its own terrace and a bathroom with a glass standing shower and a stone bathtub. An adjacent office has a soundproof wall, hidden storage and a secret door to the bedroom.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to be living the American dream after they left royal life behind . But their hopes of peace and quiet could soon be dashed by 'buses of tourists'.
A sightseeing jaunt is promising to take royal fans close to the Sussexes' Californian estate. Meghan and Harry were said to have relocated to Montecito from the UK to escape the glare of publicity after they quit royal duties in 2020.
But this new guided tour, which will set you back £958.84 for a group of six, will stop by many of the couple’s favourite hangouts in their adopted hometown, writes The Mirror.
The sightseeing trip is being advertised online as the Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito which just so happen to be run by a friend of Meghan’s estranged father Thomas Markle.
Photographer Karl Larsen claims Thomas approves of the new venture, which takes in a road close to the Sussexes’ £11m home as well as Meghan’s favourite shops and restaurants.
Customers will also get the chance to drive by homes of other celebs, such as singer Katy Perry and actress Cameron Diaz. And in LA, they will see Meghan’s old homes and school.
Royals latest news
There are reportedly even plans to expand the trip to Rosarito, in Mexico, so royal enthusiasts can meet Thomas, who fell out with Meghan in 2018, days before her wedding to Prince Harry.
Karl, 54, who hosted a YouTube show with the Duchess’s dad said: “I’ve talked to Thomas about the tour and he said, ‘Oh my God, you might have a winner there.’ “I’ve also asked if we could go see him and he said, ‘Hold that thought.’ So hopefully one day… I’ve always thought I could turn what I know about Meghan and Harry into a tour. I’m sure it’s interesting to many people.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a tumultuous time following their plummeting finances and the growing rift between them and the royal family. In 2020, the couple decided to step down from royal duties due to extra intrusive media institutions and ill-treatment from the royal family. In order to gain privacy, the couple shifted their bases to the USA at Montecito, California.
Before severing ties with the royal family, Meghan Markle had strife with her father, Thomas Markle, and step-sister, Samantha Markle. Meghan did not invite her father to the wedding in 2018 following the leak of some staged pictures. Since then, the actress has not spoken to her father. However, recently, one of his friends, Karl Larsen, breached her and her family’s privacy by arranging a tour near her Montecito house.

Karl Larsen Claims He Is The Only Person Who Knows About What Happened Between Meghan Markle And Thomas Markle
Thomas Markle is marking his presence in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘s lives with his friend encroaching upon the couple’s privacy with a celebrity tour. Karl Larsen, a celebrity photographer and Thomas Markle’s friend, has arranged a bus tour around the famous spots where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry hang out, including around the periphery of the couple’s Montecito house.
The bus tour is called the Royal Celebrity Tour of Los Angeles and Montecito.’ The tour, as per The Mirror, costs $1,200 for a group of six people. The tour is listed on Tripening, where Karl has advertised the tour with a picture of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry kissing at a polo match in Santa Barbara.
The description of the tour read, “I’m the world-famous celebrity photographer Karl Larsen, a best friend of Thomas Markle (Meghan’s father) and the guy with a stunning exclusive portfolio of pictures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle together in Montecito.”
Karl Larsen claims that he is the only person in the world who knows about what unfolded between Meghan Markle and her father. He added, “I am the only person who has an open communication pathway between Meghan’s camp and the rest of the Markle family. There is nobody on the planet that knows more info that [sic] me and I’m the only person that’s qualified to put on such a tour.”

The Photographer Addresses The Breach Of Privacy Criticism For His Tour
Karl Larsen promised the tourists an in-depth tour of the place where Meghan Markle grew up. He also ensured that the tourists would visit the quaint beach town in California where the couple and other celebrities live.
The photographer will take the tourists to the favorite hangout spots of the couple, including the Polo and Racquet Club in Santa Barbara. He will take them to Markle’s old home and school in Los Angeles. Karl will also take the risk of taking the tourists near the road of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ Montecito house.
People online have criticized Larsen’s move, and Christopher Bouzy, a tech entrepreneur, has called it “harassment.” Following the backlash, Tripenining has confirmed on X that they have removed the tour listing from their site.
Hey @cbouzy Thanks for the heads up! We removed that tour from sale — Tripening (@tripening) August 21, 2023
Karl Larsen addressed the criticism by speaking to Newsweek. He said, “I want to have the tour be available where she grew up. We’re going to go to Montecito but just places they go to, restaurants they go to.”
He continued, “It’s a custom tour so if people want to go see other sights that’s what we’re going to do but we will not go past Doria’s house and we will not go past Harry and Meghan’s.” The photographer said that he would continue the tour despite the backlash. “This is not going to be the end of the tour.”

Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new multi million-dollar Montecito life
Sunset walks along unspoiled beaches , hiking in the scenic foothills of the Los Padres forest and dining at the chicest neighbourhood restaurants — and all a stone’s throw from their sprawling $14.65 million (£10.5 million), 7.4-acre estate.
It’s easy to see why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined long-time residents Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres in choosing the town of Montecito , in Santa Barbara County, California , as their new home. And yet, for a couple in their thirties with their pick of Los Angeles neighbourhoods, it still begs the question — why settle down a 90-minute drive away from all the action, in a sleepy seaside enclave few people have heard of?
“The people who live here have made a conscious choice,” says Erik Haskell, an estate agent with luxury brokerage, The Agency, who grew up in Montecito (Spanish for “little mount”) and whose clients include Matt Damon and Rob Lowe. “For glitz and glamour, you have Beverly Hills. To live an anonymous existence, you have Montecito. It’s a gathering of like-minded people.”
It is beautiful, with lots of nature, and the homes are secluded and private. There is of course a dark side, centred at the moment on local politics and feuds with neighbouring Santa Barbara over who gets access to water during droughts. In his novel Black Money, Ross Macdonald described Montecito as a place where “almost anything can happen. Almost everything has.” He adds that “residents play at being simple villagers the way the courtiers of Versailles pretend to be peasants”.
Before Covid there were plenty of private parties in the hillside mansions, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not short of friends here. “Oprah’s had Meghan’s mother, Doria [who lives in LA] to her estate [The Promised Land] for lunch a few times and of course Ellen is nearby — she visited them at Frogmore Cottage,” says Richard Mineards, a British former royal correspondent who’s been a columnist for the Montecito Journal for 14 years and lives minutes from Harry and Meghan.
“Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom [who have been quarantining in Montecito] have a daughter, Daisy, who’s a bit younger than Archie. I think they could make friends and play on the beach together.”
Butterfly Beach is a popular spot and likely to be where Harry was filmed walking with Archie and their dogs, Pula and Guy. “It would be lovely to see Harry teaching Archie to surf,” adds Mineards. While sightings of the family have, so far, been scarce, they have been spotted cycling and are likely to hike — Cold Spring Trail, Hot Springs Canyon and San Ysidro Trail are all on their doorstep.
The family’s arrival “put Montecito on the map”, says Haskell. “When Harry and Meghan purchased, it was a tipping point for Montecito real estate. There’s been an influx of influential people from LA and New York.”
That is an understatement. New home owners in the area — which has a population of about 8,610 — include Gwyneth Paltrow, Ariana Grande, Natalie Portman and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos. Harry and Meghan’s purchase of their estimated $14.65 million house was so low-key, many in the real estate world were not aware of it. They bought their house for less than the previous owner paid for it in 2009. It is a bargain compared to other houses in the area, for example Winfrey’s $50 million (£35.9 million) property or DeGeneres’s recent $49 million (£35.2 million) purchase.

A who’s-who guide to Harry and Meghan’s inner circle
So how does Harry and Meghan’s nine-bedroom, 16-bathroom estate, known as “The Chateau of Riven Rock” compare? Mineards says it is typical of “the beautiful houses” in the area. “It’s Mediterranean feeling with terracotta tiles. All the estates are behind high walls and have big gates.”
In the days after the Oprah interview, a German film crew tried for a sighting of the couple in their new habitat. They were shooed away — but not before being charmed. “Two men in their twenties came out to say, ‘you can’t film here,’ but they weren’t aggressive, they were very nice,” says Mineards.
Built in 2003, the chateau now has a library, gym, home theatre, wine cellar and spa. The couple’s bedroom is like the presidential suite of a five-star hotel, with fireplaces, chandeliers, a balcony, a separate sitting room and a marble bath. As well as the pool, tennis court and a coop of rescue chickens, the estate has rose gardens, century-old olive trees and an outdoor pizza oven. There’s a two-bedroom guesthouse for when LA-based friends such as Adele and James Corden visit.
Montecito’s culture of discretion should protect the couple. There are no celebrity home sightseeing tours, and the locals “don’t make it easy for paparazzi to be here,” Mineards says. In other words, even if the couple were out for dinner we might never hear about it. Resorts such as The Rosewood Miramar Beach offer private check-ins and private dining areas. “You’ll go to a restaurant and maybe a celebrity will be in there but it’s not like people are going up to them,” he says. Harry and Meghan have only been spotted in one Montecito restaurant so far, dining with actress and musician friends Katharine McPhee and David Foster at Lucky’s Steakhouse. It does a mean martini and has a Rat Pack vibe.
Mineards puts the elusiveness of the couple down to the pandemic, and hopes to see them out and about once lockdown is lifted. “Many people have said they’d like to see them in the community getting involved because we have so many non-profit organisations here.” There is a focus on the environment — the area is prone to wildfires, mudslides and drought. Montecito has paid for half of a desalination plant in neighbouring Santa Barbara in exchange for as much water as it wants from them for the next 50 years. It does not want to be criticised for using more than its fair share of water. And independence from Santa Barbara is important to Montecito.
Finally, Harry and Meghan’s new life wouldn’t be complete without the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. Harry’s friend Nacho Figueras (a mutual mate of DeGeneres) and his wife Delphina are regulars and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited on their 2011 North American tour. “At the dinner, William said Charles and Harry were as green as grass that he was there,” recalls Mineards. “With lockdown ending we might well see them and have Harry riding in the summer. If he wasn’t a prince he would have made a very good professional polo player. He is a better player than William.” He is in the perfect place to get his practice in, undisturbed by any unwanted attention.
