Coastal Maine Windjammer Cruises: Overnight Schooner Sailing Vacations

' src=

Maine Windjammer cruises will connect you with nature as you adventure along the coast of Maine. These overnight schooner sailing vacations are unique due to their small size and big adventure.

Taking a cruise on any one of the nine ships in the Maine Windjammer Association fleet is a wonderful experience. It’s a time to unwind and unplug as you become part of a unique family of crew and passengers, sailing Maine's beautiful New England coastline in the northern United States.

Who is a Maine Windjammer Cruise For?

We think this experience is great for:

  • A history buff.
  • Anyone who wants a unique adventure on the ocean.
  • A person who is craving a break from technology and devices and wants an “unplugged,” all inclusive experience.
  • Someone interested in being closer to nature than on a typical cruise ship (even a small cruise ship).
  • A person wanting a unique way to see Maine’s Coast for more than a few hours.
  • Someone who wants to understand sailing life a little better.
  • Anyone who wishes they could own a sailboat but can't, for whatever reason. This is a great way to get your sailboat fix!

The History of Maine Windjammer Association

Our captain shared with us that Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) was formed in the 1970s. A few captains of several ships back then came together to be able to afford advertising in the New York Times and a paper in Portland, Maine. Their advertisements looked a little like a divided quilt, with a silhouette or drawing of the ship on it.

Though the ads and form of advertising have changed from paper and print to websites and social media, the camaraderie and strength of like-minded captains has persisted well into the 21st century. The ships are individually owned and operated, but they can attract more guests when they band together.

The Maine Windjammer Association Fleet

Nine ships make up the fleet of the association. Each ship's character differs from the others in terms of its finishes, sails, and vibe, depending on its captain.

Each vessel offers a lobster bake on a coastal Maine island. (If the weather is inclement, the lobster bake may be on your ship, like it was for us. It was still fantastic!)

Ships that leave from Rockland and the Ship's Captain(s) and Owners

  • American Eagle : Captain Tyler King
  • Heritage : Captains Sean Grimes and Ben Welzenbach
  • J. & E. Riggin : Captains Justin Schaefer and Jocelyn Schmidt
  • Stephen Taber : Jane Barnes and Captain Noah Barnes
  • Ladona : Jane Barnes and Captains Noah Barnes and J.R. Braugh
  • Grace Bailey : Captain Sam Sikkema

Ships that leave from Camden and the Ship's Captain(s) and Owners

  • Lewis R. French : Captain Becky Wright
  • Angelique : Captain Dennis Gallant and Candace Kuchinski
  • Mary Day: Captains Barry King & Jen Martin

The Angelique ship with red sails, sailing Maine's coast, part of Maine Windjammer cruises.

Age of the Maine Windjammer Cruises Ships

The ships were built within just over a century of each other. The two oldest were built in 1871. That includes the Stephen Taber and Lewis R. French. Grace Bailey was built in 1882. The Heritage was built in 1983. American Eagle, which we sailed on, was built in 1930. All of the ships have been through various refreshes and modernizations over the years, including maintenance (as any boat owner knows is never-ending)

Note that this is not the date that the ship became a passenger-bearing vessel. It's simply when it was built. For example, American Eagle didn't start to take on passengers until 1986, when Captain John Foss, the previous ship owner, remodeled it.

Size of the Schooners: Length and Guest Cap

The ships range in length from 64 feet (Lewis R. French) to 132 feet (Victory Chimes). The American Eagle is 92 feet and felt plenty big yet also intimate.

The number of guests that can sleep on the ship vary as well. While Ladona can sleep the least, at 16 passengers, Victory Chimes can host the most at 40. However, most of the ships fall in the 20 to 30 range, with American Eagle capping out at 26 guests. This does not include the crew. (On American Eagle, we had 6 crew members, including Captain John Foss, who has since retired.)

Maine Windjammer Cruises: Amount of Days

All the ships sail various cruise lengths, from three to six days. Some of the ships can do one or two-day sailings (Lewis R. French, Mary Day, and J. & E. Riggin). Ladona has overnight sailing cruise options that are seven days, and American Eagle has cruises that are eight or nine days as well.

We recommend a minimum of three nights. Our sailing was four days and four nights, and it was wonderful for our introduction to this type of cruising, but not too much, just in case we were iffy about it. (We loved it – next time, we'd spring for a five day! We recount each day in our trip report .)

Ports of Departure and Getting to Coastal Maine

You have to get to Maine to embark on your Maine Windjammer Association adventure, sailing Maine’s cost.

People either fly to Portland, where Maine’s main airport is, and drive to the port from there or fly to Boston and do the same. (The drive from Boston, which is further south along the coast, is just a little longer.)

If you don’t want to rent a car, a number of car services will take you to coastal Maine along with a coach bus option, through Concord Coach Lines . But expect to pay a few hundred dollars, depending on what airport you arrive to and its distance to your port of departure.

Not all of the Maine Windjammer Association cruises leave from the same port – there are two port locations, one in Rockland and one in Camden. The towns are very close to each other, however you'll only need to go to one of the two for your trip.

You can expect for your Maine Windjammer cruise to be closed-loop , meaning it starts and ends in the same port.

One of the main considerations in budgeting for our sailing trip was what it was going to cost us to get to Maine before even getting on the ship. And, candidly, it cost us about the same amount to get to Maine and rent a car as it does to go on Maine Windjammer cruises for a few days. (We rented a car to continue on a 7-day road trip of Maine's coastal towns immediately following our four-day schooner cruise.)

Cost to Sail Maine's Coast with Maine Windjammer Cruises

The length of the cruise and what ship you're going on are the two factors that most affect the cost of sailing with Maine Windjammer Cruises.

Cruises with Maine Windjammer Association vary from $885 to $3,188.

When you are budgeting for your trip, aside from budgeting for transportation to get to the port, you should also allot for tip money. Tips are between 8% to 10% per crew member, per passenger. This adds a few hundred dollars to your trip.

We discuss that a bit more in our Maine Windjammer Cruise packing list post.

Accessibility on the Maine Windjammer Association Ships

Due to the age of the ships, and way you need to climb up and down steep steps (nearly ladders) to get from one deck to another, we do not recommend this type of cruise for anyone with mobility concerns. You simply cannot avoid the steps to get between the decks.

Additionally, if you want to go ashore near ports, you have to tender to land in a rowboat. The way this is done is by lowering a rowboat into the water, then the guests climb down from the schooner to the rowboat with the help of a very small ladder that's simply rope and wooden cross bars.

Lastly, the rooms and space within each cabin are not big enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers.

Special Events and Themed Cruises

There are special events cruises every year that may vary slightly, but the overall themes are there. This includes things like the arts and specialty nature cruises, where usually, a specific guide will be on board to educate the guests about the topic. Here are some cruises for you to keep an eye on if any of the activities interest you:

  • Lighthouse cruises
  • Photography cruises
  • Yoga and Wellness cruise
  • Knitting cruise
  • Fall foliage cruise
  • Wine-tasting or beer-tasting cruises
  • Acadia National Park and cruise
  • Meteor shower cruise

Some events are considered Gatherings of the Fleet. This includes things like Great Schooner Race, Camden Windjammer Festival and Schooner Gams, which are when the majority of the Maine Windjammer Association fleet gather in a harbor or right next to one another for a fun and casual gathering.

We experienced a Gam on the sailing we were on with American Eagle, when about seven of the ships were together in a harbor. It was amazing to see the ships sailing into the harbor to moor to spend some time together!

Our cruise also had the option to sign up for watercolor lessons with a watercolor artist and teacher onboard. Carol L. Douglas is a very talented artist. Though we didn't sign up for the workshop, it was amazing to see her students (and the guests) painting “en plein air” throughout our sailing.

Participation in Ship Responsibilities

Participating in things like raising and lowering the sails is completely optional. You'll get FOMO (fear of missing out!) if you don't do it at least once, but it certainly isn't required.

By the end of the cruise, Dan was a pro, furling sails like he'd be doing it his whole life!

They also asked for volunteers to help dry dishes after each meal on our ship, and I helped do it twice to bond with the other guests who were helping, along with the crew. But again, it's not required. It is completely voluntary.

Cruise Ports: Where do the Ships Go?

Unlike a river cruise or ocean cruise with a set itinerary, which may change due to weather but you generally know where you’re going (from Alaska’s ports to European ports and beyond), a cruise with Maine Windjammer Association is open to the captain’s desires of where he or she wants to sail that day.

The adventure is really being on the ship and knowing, overall, you’ll stop in some small coastal Maine towns here or there to walk around for a while and then row back to your moored schooner in the harbor.

We stopped in the harbor of two towns during our trip. One was Stonington (a quaint and picturesque fishing village), and the other was North Haven. Another day, we had the option to go ashore on Russ Island, which was pretty much simply a beautiful, mostly untouched beach that Dan and I enjoyed exploring together for an hour and a half.

What is the Food Like on Maine Windjammer Association Cruises?

From our experience, it's excellent. We were truly in awe of how much food they pump out in such a small g a lley , how often they are creating meals (nearly constantly when the sun is up), and how GOOD it is.

In fact, the BEST lobster we have ever had (including during our 7-day road trip following our Maine Windjammer cruise) was on the American Eagle.

We haven't been on every ship, however, we hear from trusted friends, travel writers, and colleagues that the food on any of the ships is outstanding.

In addition to a lobster bake on every Maine Windjammer Association sailing, you can expect things like fresh baked bread, comforting soups (especially wonderful with how cold it can get as you sail, even during summer in Maine ), coffee and tea with breakfast and lunch, savory breakfasts, sweet desserts, and filling dinners including dessert.

I am a guide leading trips in Maine for the summer I have a block of time off I would love to do an overnight trip maybe three or four day sail if you have availability anytime from July 31st thru Aug 4. Thank you!

Hi Tiffany! We highly recommend a Maine Windjammer cruise. We’re not any of the ships – we traveled on American Eagle and were happy to write about our experience to spread the word. Visit their website for availability of sailings: https://www.sailmainecoast.com/

Interested in 3-day Windjammer sails in Maine. An 80th birthday present. I have sailed a 16 ft Swampscott dory out of Provincetown for over 20 years and have experience bareboating 30+ sloops on the West Coast of Florida. Some mobility problems after 2 recent knee replacements Miss the sea so much. please advise. Bill Hughes

Hi Bill – Happy 80th birthday! What an amazing way to celebrate! We recommend reaching out to the Windjammer own directly. They are great people! You can participate or not participate as much as you like in the hoisting of the sails and such. The mobility challenges we’d recommend looking out for are the stairs to get to/from the sleeping deck and galley, which is more like a ladder. And also the ladder to get into a rowboat to get to shore when the boat is moored. We’ll email you to connect you with the ship owner. 😉

Unleash Your Inner Sailor on a Windjammer Adventure in Maine!

Sail aboard the newest and largest vessel in the fleet!

Welcome Aboard!

Join us aboard the Heritage this season for an unforgettable Maine windjammer cruise. Every trip is special. Capts. Sean and Ben are your hosts aboard every trip. In addition to sailing the vessel, they enjoy entertaining their guests by playing live music in the evenings. The food is delicious with restaurant quality dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Daily breads, cookies, and desserts are all freshly baked aboard.

Each trip we enjoy an all-you-can-eat lobster cookout on a pristine island beach. Hear about the islands, vessels and people of Mid-Coast Maine as well as the many lighthouses we see. Wildlife abounds with birds both ashore and at sea as well as marine mammals. Best of all you can enjoy sailing aboard a schooner built with your comfort in mind.

Heritage Sailing

Enjoyed the trip of a lifetime with my daughter (age 29)! The Captains and crew were kind and engaging and the food was incredible! The main coast is full of beautiful little islands and sailing felt like such an adventure! The captains entertained us one evening and surprised us with their notable talents!

Romantic getaway schooner Heritage

We have a trip for everyone aboard the Schooner Heritage. Whether you want to sail with the fleet, explore in search of lighthouses, tour Acadia, bond with family, gaze at shooting stars, or just relax and sail the Maine coast with no itinerary. We can always promise stunning views, delicious food, and an unforgettable experience. Summers in Maine are a time for growth and rejuvenation. The season is short so as Mainers we celebrate and make the most of it. Join us in this celebration as we explore hidden places not accessible to most and with 3,478 miles of tidal coastline, see Maine the way it was meant to be seen.

Coasting schooners, like the Heritage, were designed for accessing shallow passages and ports allowing us to travel to more secluded places where comparable sized vessels can’t access. This makes Heritage the perfect choice when choosing a windjammer to sail on.

1 Music Night-3 Edit.jpg

Enjoy an evening beverage and sing along with Captains Sean and Ben during lively music nights.  Whether up on deck, or down in the galley, music nights aboard the Schooner Heritage are the best on the bay!

Performing different genres of music, and the songs you know and love, as well as songs you may have never heard before that will surely be added to your playlist after you get home.

We look forward to you joining us!

Row ashore and stretch your legs in local fishing villages and towns rich with art and culture. In the evenings we will anchor in hidden coves where you’ll enjoy coastal wildlife, spectacular sunsets, and endless stars.

Experience a Maine Windjammer Cruise

There is something uniquely Maine about a windjammer cruise. Maybe it’s because the state is home to the largest fleet of traditional tall ships in the Americas.

Or maybe there’s some sort of magic that happens out on the blue-green waters of the Atlantic, while under sail, that is indescribably, wonderfully Maine.

To truly experience a Maine Windjammer, you must practice the art of traveling leisurely, at the pace the winds want you to go. Windjammer cruises are the perfect way to enjoy life, moment by moment. Simply pack your clothes and ditch your devices.

These traditionally rigged ships provide all sorts of ways to have fun and relax. Once on board, the crew will invite you to help raise the sails, yank the anchor off the sea floor and even steer the ship. Feeling lazy? That’s okay, too. Head to the galley and grab that extra pancake. Take that second - no, third - cup of coffee up on deck with your new novel. Stretch out next to an empty ship’s boat. Watch the breeze snap the sails. Count the sea birds.

Miss the office yet? We didn’t think so.

Over 80 years ago, cruising was popularized by Capt. Frank Swift. He converted some aging cargo schooners into coastal cruisers that carried passengers on excursions. It took a while, but the business caught on. Today they travel throughout Maine on trips lasting from several hours to more than a week. Specialty cruises offer people a chance to sail while also knitting, playing music and studying photography.

Windjammers are still generally schooners - many of which have been designated National Historic Landmarks. Some are retired cargo or fishing ships. Others are old racers with traditional rigging. A few are newer vessels built for the trade. Unlike large cruise ships, they have bunks and cozy cabins, not monster staterooms and 24-hour buffets. Windjammers are woody and compact below decks. Crew and guests live and work in close quarters. The ship’s galley and dining areas are like your kitchen at home – everybody mingles there. Guests should be prepared to climb up and down ladders and steep steps to get on and off the boat and to the lower decks.

Despite those eccentricities – or, perhaps because of them – windjammers thrive in Maine. Each year, more adventurous folks discover their charms. Many veterans return to sail on the same ship, often year after year. Because once you’ve discovered the fine art of sailing, you also discover it gets better with practice.

To find your perfect multi-day windjammer cruise, visit the Maine Windjammer Association or Maine Windjammer Cruises , most of their fleets are based out of Rockland or Camden . There are several day sails offered along the coast including Portland Schooner Co . in Portland, Schooner Surprise and Schooner Olad in Camden, and Downeast Windjammer Cruises in Bar Harbor.

15 Best Things To Do in Rockland, Maine

N estled along the shores of Penobscot Bay in MidCoast, Maine, the city of Rockland is waiting to be explored. In this article, I'll cover the best things to do in Rockland from my recent visit.

Known for its vibrant arts scene, historic lighthouses, and mouthwatering seafood, this beautiful coastal town blends New England tradition and modern flair.

Whether strolling down Main Street, indulging in a fresh lobster roll, or setting sail on a scenic windjammer cruise , Rockland promises a memorable experience for travelers of all tastes.

So grab your camera and your appetite, and let's explore the top things to do in Rockland, Maine.

Lighthouses

Maine's historic lighthouses are a popular draw along its rugged coast, and Rockland is a great place to check two off the list.

1. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

In the mid-1800s, several storms battered Rockland Harbor. From 1890 to 1889, the United States Army Corps of Engineers built a massive 4,000-foot-long granite breakwater to protect the town. It used more than 768,000 tons of rock to do so.

In 1902, the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was added to the end to warn sailors of the stone barrier and entrance to the harbor. The lighthouse was automated in 1964.

Visitors can walk the nearly mile-long breakwater for a closer look at the lighthouse. It's best to time your walk at low tide and only go out in clear, dry conditions.

During my brief stay in town, there was thick fog and low visibility, so I decided against making the walk to this historic lighthouse by myself.

The lighthouse's parking lot is about 2.3 miles from downtown Rockland, so it's best to drive, get a taxi, or take a bike.

Travel Tip: Rideshare apps don't operate in Rockland. There are two local taxi companies (but only one accepts rides on weekends without a reservation in advance).

2. Owls Head Lighthouse

The second active lighthouse in Rockland is the 30-foot Owls Head Lighthouse in Owls Head State Park, about 5.8 miles south of the city.

It was built in 1825 atop a nearly 80-foot bluff and can be visited on foot through the park or viewed from the water, as I did aboard the Schooner J & E Riggin.

Museums, art galleries, and public art are all easily accessible on foot in downtown Rockland, Maine.

3. Farnsworth Art Museum

The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is a must-visit for art lovers.

Celebrating Maine's role in American art, it houses a remarkable collection of over 15,000 works, with a particular focus on pieces by Andrew Wyeth and his family.

Visitors can explore galleries filled with American art from the 18th century to the present, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts.

The works of art I enjoyed most included a colorful 2021 painting entitled Strawberry Moon by Emilie Stark-Menneg and Daniel Minter's mixed media work—A Distant Holla, Deep Inside Us.

The museum's serene sculpture garden through which I exited and historic homestead add to the charm.

4. Center for Maine Contemporary Art

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) in Rockland showcases the vibrant and evolving world of Maine's contemporary art scene.

Housed in a strikingly modern building, the CMCA features exhibitions from emerging and established artists, reflecting diverse mediums and perspectives.

5. Maine Lighthouse Museum

The Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland is a beacon for maritime history enthusiasts.

Home to the nation's most extensive collection of lighthouse artifacts, the museum pays tribute to the legacy of lighthouses and their keepers.

Visitors can explore fascinating exhibits featuring lenses, models, photographs, and more. This unique museum highlights lighthouses' vital role in Maine's coastal heritage.

6. Owls Head Transportation Museum

A 3.5-mile drive south of Rockland brings you to the Owls Head Transportation Museum , a treasure trove for transportation enthusiasts.

The museum's collection spans decades, from horse-drawn carriages to vintage aircraft.

7. Coastal Children's Museum

The Coastal Children's Museum in Rockland offers interactive exhibits focusing on the natural and cultural world of coastal Maine.

From touching sea creatures to imaginative arts and crafts, the museum fosters curiosity and creativity.

Additional Activities

8. rockland harbor trail.

The Rockland Harbor Trail is a 3.5-mile path that connects downtown Rockland with the city's working waterfront. Walking the trail is a great way to get some exercise and a feel for the town.

Since the morning I had available was chilly and overcast, I walked a short segment from Harbor Park, host of the city's Blues Festival, to Sandy Beach.

Unfortunately, it was too early to eat at Archer's on the Pier, a seafood restaurant with harbor views known for its lobster club sandwich.

Despite the gloomy weather and low tide, there were splashes of color thanks to pretty wildflowers along the boardwalk.

9. Project Puffin Visitor Center

The Project Puffin Visitor Center is a gateway to understanding the charismatic puffin and other Maine seabirds.

This small educational center features interactive exhibits, videos, and live events. Visitors can learn about the conservation efforts that have helped restore Atlantic puffin populations.

Fun Fact: Baby puffins are called “pufflings.” So cute.

10. Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

This wildlife visitor center is an informative gateway to the region's diverse coastal habitats. Explore exhibits on seabirds, migratory birds, and marine life and learn about conservation efforts.

With interactive displays and educational programs, it's a starting point for nature enthusiasts looking to discover the beauty and ecological importance of Maine's coastal islands and waters.

11. Primo Restaurant

Primo , one of the best restaurants in Maine, is a mere mile south of downtown Rockland.

This farm-to-table fine dining establishment features seasonal cuisine with many ingredients grown on the property. I splurged on a tasty three-course dinner, which was worth every penny.

Guests are encouraged to walk the grounds after their meal, which include a duck pond, greenhouses, an organic farm, a pig pen, and a barn used as a wedding and special events venue.

12. Windjammer Cruises

Rockland is home to Maine's largest windjammer fleet, totaling six larger schooners.

The following sailboats operate multi-day cruises out of Rockland Harbor:

  • Schooner American Eagle
  • Schooner Grace Bailey
  • Schooner Heritage
  • Schooner J & E Riggin
  • Schooner Ladona
  • Schooner Stephen Taber

In fact, a Maine windjammer cruise aboard the J & E Riggin brought me to Rockland. We lived aboard the 120-foot schooner, a National Historic Landmark, for four days and nights.

We sailed to nearby islands, drank local beer at a brewery in North Haven , enjoyed a lobster bake on a small beach, spotted fin whales around Penobscot Bay, and dined on delicious food .

The windjamming season runs from May to October, and all the schooners offer specialty cruises on everything from knitting to stargazing and fall foliage .

13. Sailing Day Trips

If an overnight windjammer cruise doesn't fit your itinerary or budget, you can still enjoy a few hours on the water with a day sailing experience out of Rockland.

Captain Tyler Waterson takes guests sailing on Morning in Maine , a 55-foot coastal ketch. Two-hour day trips along Maine's coast are available for as little as $50 per person.

Bufflehead Sailing Charters is another company offering sailing experiences. Captain Daniel Bennett has a lifetime of experience at sea and enjoys taking one to six guests out for day sails.

14. North Atlantic Blues Festival

The North Atlantic Blues Festival is a rhythm-filled celebration that draws blues enthusiasts from near and far.

The two-day event is held every July in Habor Park by the waterfront, showcasing a lineup of acclaimed national blues performers.

15. Maine Lobster Festival

The annual Maine Lobster Festival is a five-day event in August that pays tribute to Maine's iconic crustacean with lobster dinners, cooking competitions, and maritime displays.

Add lively entertainment, local crafts, and a parade, and you have a festival that's as rich in flavor as tradition.

Wrapping Up

From the rhythmic blues of a waterfront festival to the delicate flavors of freshly caught lobster, Rockland, Maine, is a destination that sings with coastal charm and cultural richness.

Whether exploring its world-class museums, savoring local cuisine, or simply soaking in the stunning seaside views, Rockland offers diverse experiences that cater to all tastes.

Consider this list of the best things to do in Rockland when planning your next trip to Maine.

Thank you to the  Maine Windjammer Association  and  J & E Riggin  for inviting me to experience one of their cruises at no cost. My night at the LimeRock Inn in Rockland was organized in partnership with the Maine Office of Tourism.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement.

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

Cruise Lines Are Rerouting Voyages From Baltimore Following Bridge Collapse — What to Know

Prior to the collapse, the port was home to three major cruise lines: Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Cruise lines sailing out of Baltimore are working to make alternative arrangements following Tuesday’s fatal bridge collapse.

All ship operations at the Port of Baltimore have been suspended after a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning, causing it to collapse, according to the White House . Six workers who were on the bridge at the time remain missing and are presumed dead, according to The New York Times .

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line told Travel + Leisure it temporarily moved its sailings on the Carnival Legend to Norfolk, Virginia. The company will provide a complimentary bus service from Norfolk back to Baltimore when the ship returns from its current voyage on Sunday for passengers who boarded in Baltimore prior to the collapse.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, the president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden… to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line, which first launched cruises from the Maryland port last year , told T+L the company isn’t scheduled to return to the port until September.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that recently took place in Baltimore. Our sincerest thoughts are with the community and all those affected,” the Norwegian spokesperson told T+L. “At this time there is no impact to our itineraries, as we do not have any voyages scheduled to depart from the city until later this year in September and October. We will remain in contact with the Port of Baltimore and provide updates to our guests and travel partners if anything changes. In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event.”

A representative for Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its plans from T+L. But the company told The Washington Post it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”
