It's typically something you'll think about before you ever click "search" to find flights and airfare.

At face value, it seems like a pretty straightforward choice. Book a one-way flight if you're only flying in one direction, and book a round-trip flight if you'll be returning home ... right?

Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. Thanks to airline pricing trends and our own personal scheduling quirks, there's a bit more to consider.

There may be cases where you wonder if you're better off booking two one-way flights to save money. You may have uncertain plans that make it difficult to commit to a return flight. In some cases, when visiting a few different cities, you may be better off with something different entirely: a multicity itinerary.

There are also plenty of additional considerations if you're booking an award flight using frequent flyer miles or flying internationally.

Here, we break down the basics of what you need to know about booking round-trip flights.

A round-trip flight is an itinerary from one destination to another, with a flight back to the original destination.

In most cases, this is what you probably book when going on vacation or visiting a family member for a holiday weekend.

Let's say I live in Charlotte and want to fly to Arizona for a spring break trip. I book an itinerary with an outbound flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and a return trip to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) aboard American Airlines.

The two flights, booked together on a single itinerary, constitute a round trip.

What is the difference between a round-trip flight and a one-way flight?

When you book a round-trip flight, your itinerary includes an outbound flight and a return trip.

A one-way flight only takes you one direction — say, from Charlotte to Phoenix — with no return flight scheduled.

Is a round-trip flight different from 2 one-way flights?

Yes, in terms of how you book your trip. No, in terms of your travel plans themselves.

Again, a round-trip itinerary includes both an outbound flight and a return trip to the city of origin. A one-way flight is a single trip from one airport to another, with no return booked.

Booking 2 one-way flights

However, if you book two one-way flights, you can, in essence, create your own version of a round trip. This could be on the same airline or on two entirely different airlines.

For the purposes of your travel experience, it's effectively a round trip.

But, know that in the airline computer system(s), you'd technically be traveling on two separate reservations. So, you'd receive different trip confirmation numbers for the outbound and return flights.

Is booking 2 one-ways cheaper than a round-trip flight?

In the U.S., splitting a round trip up into two one-way flights on the same airline and travel dates typically makes no difference in terms of price.

However, on a small number of routes, airlines do charge a premium for one-way bookings compared to the price they charge for a round trip. This is more common internationally, where round-trip flights can be a better value than two one-way trips. Booking two separate one-way flights tends to be more expensive for international travel.

Also, budget carriers frequently offer one-way fares at the same price as a round-trip ticket.

That means if you booked separate one-way flights, you'd most likely end up paying the same as, or even more than, a round-trip fare, depending on the route.

Booking 2 one-way flights on different airlines

On the other hand, there are cases where, thanks to a tool like Google Flights , you might discover that you can save money by booking an outbound, one-way flight on one airline and a one-way return flight on a different airline.

For example, last year, TPG contributor Sean Cudahy needed to travel to North Texas for the weekend. Round-trip flights on a single airline from the Washington, D.C., region to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) were coming in at more than $600 that particular weekend.

However, he saved a couple hundred dollars by mixing and matching: He booked a one-way, outbound flight to DFW aboard Delta Air Lines and a separate, one-way return flight on American Airlines.

Just keep in mind this can be risky. If your flight on one airline gets significantly delayed — to the point that you miss your return flight — your second airline won't automatically rebook you. The airline staff may not have much sympathy for your situation since your troubles happened aboard a different carrier.

Can I book a round-trip flight to 1 city and then return home from another?

Yes. These flights are known as open-jaw or multicity itineraries. Many airlines offer this booking option.

Let's say I want to fly from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO). I'm going to visit Walt Disney World for a few days. Then, I'm going to take a Brightline train to South Florida and spend a few days at the beach before flying back to New York.

Since these are airports heavily served by JetBlue, I'll use that carrier as an example. On JetBlue's website, I'll select "Multi-city" instead of searching "Roundtrip" or "One-way" flights.

I'll need to separately enter each leg of the trip. Let's do a Saturday departure from Newark to Orlando, and then a Thursday return from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Newark.

You'll end up booked on a single itinerary, with the outbound and return flights linked, but with the different city combinations.

Can I buy a round-trip flight with an open return?

No, not exactly. When you book a round-trip flight, you'll generally have to specify a return leg and date.

If your plans are likely to change, though, what you'll want to do instead is pick a date that's far enough out. You'll need to book with an airline or in a cabin class that doesn't charge change fees. Then, reschedule your return trip once your plans are set. Alternatively, you can book a "flexible" fare, which is more expensive but generally allows easier changes.

Make sure you're familiar with an airline's change-fee policy before booking an open-return round-trip flight. For example, most airlines won't let you cancel or change basic economy tickets.

Should I book mileage or award tickets as 2 one-ways or a round trip?

It largely depends on the route. In some cases, you'll get better award availability if you book two one-way flights. In others, the taxes for two one-way award flights could end up being higher than what you'd pay for a round-trip itinerary.

However, in most cases nowadays, award tickets for two one-way flights and a round-trip flight tend to add up to the same number of miles. Just be sure to check both on an airline's website to ensure you're getting the best possible award availability .

Booking a flight involves navigating a maze of decisions. Is it better to fly with a budget airline or full-service one? How about basic economy versus regular economy ? And would you prefer pretzels or a cookie?

Choosing between a single round-trip or two one-way tickets is the most basic decision and — you might be surprised to learn — one of the more nuanced.

The cost between the two is usually the same for domestic flights but can vary significantly for international routes (assuming you're booking with cash rather than points and miles ).

Given that airfare was 26% more expensive in January 2023 than January 2022, according to the latest consumer price index data, budget travelers need to save every penny they can.

In general, it can be more convenient to book a round-trip flight for a trip with specific start and end dates, but other considerations, such as cancellation policies and pricing, could make booking one-ways more appealing in some cases. And everything works differently for flights booked with miles.

Let’s break it down.

Domestic flights

For flights within the United States on the same airline, round-trip tickets almost always cost the same as two one-ways.

There’s one caveat here: Booking two one-way tickets between separate destination or arrival airports can, in some cases, save money (or cost more).

“Fares don’t have to be booked as returns,” says Laura Lindsay, travel trends expert at SkyScanner, a travel booking platform. “Look at flying out with one airline and back with another, or out of one airport and back into another to save money.”

Many online travel tools will automatically compare prices for these mismatched airline or airport itineraries and automatically include them in search results.

But it might be worth checking manually, especially for plans that involve different local airports or for airlines that don’t appear in search results , such as Southwest.

All that said, for domestic flights, the difference is almost always a wash.

International flights

For international tickets, the logic changes completely. Round-trip tickets are usually cheaper than one-ways, sometimes significantly so.

NerdWallet compared fares across multiple international routes and found that, typically, buying two one-way tickets costs 20% more than a single roundtrip.

To determine these differences, we compared routes between four U.S. airports and two airports in each destination region.

The effect is more pronounced when flying to some regions, such as Africa and Asia. That said, for flights between the U.S. and every region we looked at, it costs more to book two one-ways than a single round-trip.

In some circumstances, such as open-ended trips where you don’t know when you’ll be returning, one-way flights might still make the most sense. But for most international travel, round-trip fares are the clear winner.

Are round-trip or one-way flights cheaper if booking with points?

What about the cost difference between one-way and round-trip fares when using points or miles ?

Generally, airlines break these fares into one-way sections, meaning there is no meaningful difference between the two, in terms of cost. Yet a few caveats apply:

Taxes on award flights can be higher when booking two one-ways. Delta Air Lines, for example, tends to charge more fees for flights originating in Europe.

Some airlines, such as ANA, do not allow one-way award flights, period.

Flights booked with credit card points using a travel portal (i.e. not transferred to an airline partner) follow the same rules as cash fares.

When you have a handful of stops to make, you don't want to waste time and gas going from place to place randomly. A tool called "Routora" makes finding efficient routes super easy, and it works with Google Maps.

Organizing stops into a route that makes sense can be cumbersome in Google Maps. First, you have to find all the places on the map, then map out the best order in which to make the stops. Routora allows you to simply enter all your stops in Google Maps, then click a button to have it sorted and optimized cleanly. From there, you can send the directions to your phone and go on your way.

First, install the Routora extension for Google Chrome ( also worsk with Microsoft Edge ) and sign in with your Google account.

Next, we're going to enter all the stops in Google Maps . Head on over to Google Maps in the same browser. Click the "Directions" icon---diamond with a turn arrow---to the right of the search bar.

Google Maps will pre-fill your device's location for the starting point. If you want this to be a different location, go ahead and change it.

Next, enter the location of your first destination into the text box below, and then hit Enter. Alternatively, you can click any location on the map to get the same results.

To add another destination, click "Add Destination" and then start typing a new location. You can repeat this to add up to nine total stops. Don't worry about the order of the stops, just add them all.

The one special thing you need to do for Routora is make sure to put your starting position as the last stop as well. This completes the "circle" of the route.

Now all you have to do is click the Routora extension to run it. The tool will do its thing and open up a new Google Maps tab with the stops rearranged into a perfectly optimized route.

That's all there is to it! Now, you probably want to get this route on your phone to use while you're driving. So let's do that.

You can send directions to a single location or a multi-stop trip from Google Maps on the desktop to your phone. For the purposes of this article, we'll be showing the multi-stop method.

A menu will appear with a list of devices associated with your Google account, including iPhones, iPads, and Android devices. Tap the device you want to send the directions to.

Lyft is known as a popular on-demand ride service, you request a ride when you need a ride. However, our gurus have been asked many times if it is possible to set up a round trip ride instead. While there is no formal round trip option on Lyft we do have an easy solution for booking a “round trip” ride. See the steps below.

As a side note, we only recommend following the below steps if your stop is going to be very brief as you will be expected to pay wait time while your driver waits to take you on your return leg. If your round trip is more spread out, then we simply advise that you request another ride when it is time to return. You will end up saving a lot of money this way!

Steps to Order a Roundtrip Lyft Ride

Open the Lyft app and enter your pickup address
Enter your destination address
Now select the “+” symbol next to the destination. This will allow you to enter a 3rd address. Enter the same address as step 1 and you will be ready to request a Lyft round trip!

As a general suggestion we advise that you fill your Lyft driver in on your plans and explain that you will only be making a quick stop in the middle of your ride. Driver’s are generally more than happy to do this; however, some drivers may get upset if you take too long at your stop. Driver’s can make more by accepting more rides, especially when they are trying to meet one of Lyft’s “promotional bonus requirements” and do not enjoy sitting around for too long only earning the wait time fee as compensation.

But Uber drivers will only wait up to 3 minutes at each stop , so make your stops quick!

You can even do a round trip by adding stops. Set your first stop, then set your second stop as your original location.

How to add stops to an Uber trip

To add more than one stop to your Uber trip, start on the Home screen and tap the Where to? box, then tap the plus (+) sign next to the text entry box .

You can add up to 5 stops. If you make a mistake, tap the X next to a stop to remove it .

I haven’t had any problems with Uber except for making a round trip. I hope after reading this I will be able to do a round trip with no problem. I don’t use Uber very often and it’s all new to me, I’m still learning. I recommend that you read up on how to get your ride the way you wish to. When I 1st. started there was a choice to select round trip, after using a few times it doesn’t come up to give me that option. Good luck to all new riders. All and all it’s a great service.

I’m not sure how to work around that issue. Round trips are only useful if your stop is only for a minute or two, like a quick stop to drop off mail at a mailbox. If your stop is more than 2 minutes, your Uber driver can end the ride and leave. If your stop is long, just request a second Uber to make the round trip home

There wouldn’t be any discount for that type of ride. Uber is an an-demand service, so you request the rides around the time that you need them. To get an estimate for each leg of the trip, download the Uber app and input the destination. Or you can go to Uber.com and get an estimate there.

I tried to do just that. A nearby errand. When I requested another ride to get me back home, the screen showed that I was already home. It showed my home address, not the address where I actually was, falsely indicating I was already home. So I obviously couldn’t use Uber. Luckily a passer-by was willing to drive me home. Apparently I hadn’t gone far enough away. Is there a zone system. This is a serious problem.

When you first open the app, tap “where to?” On the next screen at the top, you should see the + sign in the top right. But first, make sure you even need a round trip. If you plan to spend more than a few minutes at your destination, you don’t need to plan a round trip. Instead, you will request two separate trips.

This option will probably be the most common.

Setting up a multi-stop trip is just a couple of extra clicks from reserving a typical Uber ride!

Open your Uber app on your phone or another device.
Tap the words “Where to?”
Enter your first stop.
Click the “+” sign next to your first stop to open a new line for your second stop.
Enter your second stop. If needed, repeat step 4 to enter your third destination. Remember that Uber limits riders to three destinations in a single ride.
Uber will calculate your estimated fare. Once everything is ready, go ahead and reserve!

Remember that you will need to set your final destination as your start point if you’re trying to set up a round trip.

The Uber app will not do that automatically, and neither will your driver.

You might run into a situation where you meant to schedule a trip with multiple stops but only put in your first destination.

If that happens to you, don’t worry!

You can still add stops to your Uber trip, even while you’re in the car.

The first thing you’ll want to do is confirm with your Uber driver that they’re okay with you adding a stop.

Most will be accommodating, but keep in mind that you’re adding extra time to their trip as well.

From there, it’s straightforward to add stops.

Open your Uber app and go to your active ride.
Look below your driver details to see another box with many options. The part you’re looking for is your current end destination.
Click on “Add or Change.”
You’ll see your end destination. If you need to add a destination, click on “+” and enter the new stop or stops. Remember, you can only have three total!
Look at the ride and make sure that your stops are in the correct order. You can drag them around if not.
Confirm the ride. The updates will be sent to your driver on their driver app. But, of course, it never hurts to let them know you’ve updated as well!

Remember that adding stops will lengthen the ride and make it more expensive.

The Uber app should give you updated costs before you confirm your changes.

If you’re someone who likes to plan ahead, Uber allows riders to schedule rides – including those with multiple stops – up to 30 days in advance.

Open your Uber app.
Tap on “Schedule” next to “Where to?” You might also see the word “Now.” You can click on that.
Tap on “Set Pickup Time.” That will allow you to select your preferred date and 10-minute pickup window.
Select your pickup destination. By default, Uber will select your current location. If you’re scheduling your pickup for somewhere else, enter that information.

If you need to edit or cancel your future trip, go into the “Your Trips” menu.

An Uber round trip can be beneficial, but it also has some drawbacks that you’ll want to consider.

More convenient to schedule a single ride

Avoid waiting for a new Uber after each leg of your trip

Can add stops during your ride (up to three total)

More expensive than booking new rides for each leg of your trip

You can’t use it with the Uber Pool option

Each stop needs to be three minutes, or you could either lose your driver or pay extra fees

Other rideshare apps, like Lyft, also offer round trips. Lyft’s approach to round trips is similar to Uber’s multi-stop trips but with some key differences.

Lyft drivers are instructed to wait up to 10 minutes at each stop, providing more flexibility. However, Lyft limits the number of stops to two per ride, compared to Uber’s three.

Additionally, many traditional taxi services offer round trips, though they may be more costly and lack the convenience of an app-based booking system like Uber’s.

While Uber doesn’t have a dedicated round trip option, its ability to book multiple stops on a single ride gives riders the same functionality.

Even though riders are limited a bit by short stop times and a limited number of stops, the ability to book the same driver for multiple stops definitely has its appeal.

Each situation will probably be a bit different for each rider.

If you just have one quick errand to do, booking a round trip with Uber will work well.

However, if you’re going out for the day, have multiple errands, or one longer-term thing to do, public transportation or separate Uber rides are a better option.

For riders, though, the flexibility Uber provides is excellent!

For a round trip ride that only allows a 3 Minutes in and out can’t be done when your going to get a flu shot are for anything else 3 minutes can’t be done. You should re evaluate the 3 minutes and add a more reasonable time for a in and out round trip. For a customer’s are not able to drive due to partial blindness or other handicapped reasons. Why should your Uber driver have to sit there and wait for you though? That’s time that could be spent making money. 3 minutes is reasonable to me, otherwise you should be charged for using up somebody else’s time. It’s called being considerate.

That is right. Even if there is ab option to pay extra for waiting time,this round trip will be very convenient. I had to be picked up from hospital and driver left us there since it took little more then 3 min. Please UBER add this option to your trips.

It would be far more convenient, and timely, if the UBER APP would be programed with a MENU when it opens. Subsequent to opening, the greeting and MENU would appear. This MENU would quickly list the functions/options availabilities … such as “ONE WAY” and “ROUND TRIP” for example. Once the rider has selected one of the two options, each subsequent page would open with quick ,and very easy, entries inputs. (Just a “follow the yellow brick road” procedure.) THE APP NEEDS REVISING for ultimate simplicity and understanding such that there would be no need for “studying” the app – and its’ functions – and any applicable appendages to any various function(s). Absolutely no need for a “Trial and Error” approach. In short, there should be absolutely no need for any confusions, and especially guessing, for the app, in general, or its various functions and options. Uber management needs to be far more aware of what a brand-new user – and rider … or driver – must know and do far prior to using any software. Anything else is an absurd waste of time and only creates options for app users resulting in frustrations and anger. This, of course, results in the potential Uber rider, or a new potential driver. to move to another means of operations/facility and transportations which are keenly more direct and simplified. Uber Operations needs to get right on this matter.

Most drivers hate when you add a stop during the ride without asking them first, for many reasons: • They may be on their last ride of the day. • They may have accepted the ride based on wanting to do something close to your drop off location • They may have a scheduled ride coming up • They may have an appointment or obligation after your drop off • It may be a dangerous area to wait • There may be parking challenges while waiting, or require the driver to “circle the block” costing more in fuel, etc. • If they’ve accepted another ride already, that may be more profitable (for example a surge that began after your pickup but applied to the ride scheduled for after yours) or it may be a longer ride) when you add a stop, that scheduled ride is sent to another driver. If you add a stop on the way home for a quick pack of smokes or to pick up coffee on the way to work, your driver may accommodate your request without adding the stop in the app so they won’t lose the next trip.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Breeze Airways is expanding its services with a new route from West Palm Beach to Raleigh-Durham, set to launch on June 21.

The one-way fares for this route start at $49 if booked by April 30 for travel through January 7, 2025.

According to Breeze's website, the airline's other flights departing from West Palm Beach include ones to Akron, Ohio, and Charleston, South Carolina. The latter route however will not take off until October.

The airline is also offering a "Picture This" promotion that gives travelers 35% off round-trip base fares on flights to all 56 of its cities. The promotion can be accessed with the code 'SNAPSHOT' at checkout on flybreeze.com or the Breeze app. Bookings must be made by April 25 for travel between April 24 and October 10, 2024.
