The Best Saranda Tours

16 Of The BEST Saranda Tours, Day Trips & Excursions two women in kayaks on a lake

1. Kayaking in albania

Good Saranda boat tours are surprisingly quite hard to come by but this kayaking tour is one of my favourites!

The tour begins at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Butrint and ends at Ali Pasha’s Castle.

During the tour, you will paddle along the coast of the Ionian Sea where you will get to appreciate all the stunning views that Albania has to offer.

Albania has an abundance of natural beauty and this kayaking tour allows you to see all the elements. Plus, you’ll get to learn more about Albania’s fascinating culture and years of history.

If you’re not a huge fan of watersports, then I get you. This full-day tour remains strictly on land.

This sightseeing tour takes you across some of Albania’s best attractions, including Butrint National Park to see the ruins and Ksamil Beach to enjoy the ocean.

The highlight of this tour, though, is the visit to the Blue Eye of Saranda Water Spring.

You’ll discover this spring packed neatly away in a dense, green forest.

After that, you’ll head to the Ottoman Lekuresi Castle.

This trip is easy and convenient as the tour guides pick you straight up from your hotel and drop you right back off!

This Saranda day trip tour will take you directly from your hotel to the best landscapes of the Albanian Riviera.

During this tour of Saranda, you’ll get to see unspoiled shores, charming stone villages and castles that seemingly transport you back in time.

This tour also takes you to beaches and viewpoints that often get missed by Albania first-timers including Llamani and Borsh Beach.

This tour also features an additional lunch that costs €13 and includes wine and Rek in a traditional Albanian family home. Here you will get to taste authentic Albanian cuisine and explore the local village area.

The tour ends in Blue Eye National Park where the iconic spring resides. Seriously, this is one of my favourite Saranda tours!

4. Ancient Albania

This is one of the best Saranda tours if you want to immerse yourself into Albania’s history.

Again, this tour begins at the National Blue Eye Park where you’ll find crystal clear blue waters that sprouts from mountain, Mali i Gjere.

This spring has been declared a National monument and gains its name from its oval eye shape.

Later on in the tour, you will head to Lekuresi castle which was believed to be built way back in 1537.

The castle also makes for the perfect lookout of the entire bay of Sarande and the Greek island of Corfu.

The tour will then end at Butrint National Park. Here you find the well-preserved Greek theater, the iconic Byzantine Basilica, and you’ll get to explore the museum within the castle. Sounds like the perfect day out to me!

5. Saranda Wine

Now, this is my kind of tour!

No, but seriously, a food and wine-tasting tour in Albania? Does it get any better than that?

The answer is no. 👀

On this half-day tour, you’ll get to try local red wine, white wine, traditional Rek and authentic Albanian snacks too.

The tour starts like this: you will take a short trip to a beautiful location in Albania before driving to the canteen where you’ll learn how Albanian wine is produced.

Here, you’ll also get to visit the greenhouse where the grapes are grown and enjoy the wine and food while listening to traditional Albanian music.

This is such a fun experience and is best enjoyed with a group of friends! Make sure to check out my Albania travel guide for more activities that you can do in Albania!

Mesopotam is a historical village, well known for its Orthodox church, which was built in the 13th century. Yes, the 13th century!!

Then, your final destination will be an archaeological park. Here, you’ll find ruins of the ancient temple, theater, Roman baths and the church.

By attending this tour you will gain access to a live guide who will be able to answer any questions you have about Albania’s rich history.

8. Simply saranda

If you’re not a huge fan of group tours, then this private tour will be straight up your street.

On this tour, you’ll get to visit the Monastery of Costar and the Gjin Aleksi Mosque.

The Monastery of Costar was built back in 1332 and has a well-preserved interior that you just have to experience.

The mosque also has that beloved Albanian building style and its history can be traced back to the 15th century.

This is a calm tour and perfect for a short day out!

9. The best of saranda

This private half-day tour encompasses all the best parts of the historic city of Saranda.

To start the day off with a bang, you’ll visit The Blue Eye Water Spring where you will find that the river bubbles from a 50-meter-deep pool.

🤫 Insider Fact: Divers have dove into the pool but are still unclear about its true depth as they were only able to get 50 m into the pool.

Then, you will head to Lekuresi Castle which overlooks the town of Saranda. From this viewpoint, you can see the entire town as well as the islands of Ksamil and Corfu.

Then, after you’ve had SO much fun experiencing both of these attractions, you will head to the wine canteen, where you get to indulge in local Albanian food and try out a glass of wine (or two!) You can also take this time to explore the surrounding area.

10. saranda beauty

Kroreza Beach is one of the most beautiful places in Albania and one of my favourite locations to visit.

This is one of the best Saranda boat tours. The tour takes you to untouched stretch of white sandy beach, perfectly accompanied by rolling Hills and fairytale views.

This is the type of destination that nothing I say can do it justice. You just have to see for yourself!

This is just a few miles away from the main city of Saranda and is often reached by boat.

Visit with your best friend or partner and you will make unforgettable memories here!

11. The monument of nature

Experience a glimpse of Gjirokaster County on this private tour from Saranda.

This is one of the best Saranda tours because it encompasses various landmarks and the main attractions throughout Saranda, including Gjirokaster Castle, Blue Eye Spring and Skenduli House.

This is a laid-back tour and is best enjoyed with just one or two of your best friends!

Your local guide will also be more than happy to answer any questions about this beautiful country, Albania!

16 Of The BEST Saranda Tours, Day Trips & Excursions A group of people paddleboarding on a lake

12. paddleboarding in saranda

Experience Ksamil beaches, and its pristine crystal-clear waters by taking a kayaking trip around the islands.

Firstly, before you scroll past this tour because you’ve never done paddleboarding before, all skill levels are welcome!

If you have no experience paddleboarding, a guide will teach you – and it’s actually a fun experience.

Whilst paddleboarding you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking views of beautiful beaches and rocky coves.

You can either enjoy an early morning tour where you may be able to catch the sunrise or a late afternoon session where the temperatures are at their warmest.

Whilst this tour does sound amazing, it is probably best enjoyed in the summer months, just in case you fall in! Oh, and also sure to purchase your travel insurance before your trip!

13. more & more mussels

Look, I know this tour won’t be for everyone but for the select few that are a fan of mussels, I know you will appreciate this one.

This tour takes you through the process of how to cultivate and grow muscles in a natural environment.

Then it’s all hands on deck as you’ll get to source the muscles, clean the mussels, and then indulge in a tasty lunch.

This is definitely a unique experience!

16 Of The BEST Saranda Tours, Day Trips & Excursions a line of quadbikes in a field

14. quadbiking in saranda

This tour is jam-packed with adventure.

The reason why I love this tour is because you can’t always explore the best off-the-beaten tracks in a car so instead, taking a quad biking tour will take you directly to those hidden gems.

This adventure tour takes you down narrow country lanes, winding paths and will be an unforgettable experience. There are also some great Saranda hotels nearby!

You don’t have to be experienced with a quad bike to be able to take this tour as there are instructions beforehand.

15. saranda’s abundant nature

If you’re looking for Saranda summer tours that throw you out of your comfort zone, you will love this one!

Go on a magical journey through southern Albania on this group rafting trip. This is a non-stop fun experience and you’ll get to experience some incredible views of Albania too.

The rafting experience takes place on the river in Saranda and you will crawl through calm turquoise waters, green spaces and be enamoured by the natural beauty. You will seriously feel like you’re in an Amazon rainforest.

Most importantly, by attending this tour you’ll get to disconnect from the busy city – which is always good for the soul.

This tour is the perfect blend of adrenaline whilst also getting to spend time in the great outdoors. Just remember to grab your travel insurance first!

16. hidden gems in saranda

We’re ending this list of the best Saranda tours with none other than the Benja Thermal Baths and Gjirokaster tour.

These are two of the best hidden gems located in the south of Albania and you should consider visiting.

The tour begins by taking you to the thermal baths which branches out to the Langarica River.

Then the tour will later take you to Castle which overlooks the river valley and more of Saranda. This is the perfect place to take a moment to relax and enjoy the spectacular views.

Yes! Saranda is perfect if you want to explore more of Albania’s history and experience the city’s abundance of nature. There are also plenty of beaches and hidden gems.

Saranda is a great day trip destination. However, if you want to explore nearby cities too, I would suggest taking 2-3 days.

Buses and minibuses are the cheapest and most convenient way to travel from one location to the next in Saranda.

These Saranda tours certainly exceeded my expectations.

There is so much more to Saranda than just the beautiful sandy beaches (even though they are pretty great too), and instead, you can immerse yourself in the adventure that this location has to offer.

From taking a simple walking tour to water rafting and quad biking, these amazing tours will provide a fresh perspective on Saranda.

Have you gone on any of these tours? What was your experience like?

Your complete travel guide to saranda in albania.

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Saranda is fast becoming one of Albania's most sought-after destinations and with good reason. But like any travel spot, it comes with its own set of quirks and must-knows. From finding the ideal place to stay to understanding the budget needed for your trip, this guide lays out everything you need to know about Saranda, ensuring your visit is smooth, enjoyable, and memorable.

I spent the whole month of october in saranda so there are a lot of things i want to share with you that you should be aware of before traveling to saranda.

I will cover:

Where to stay

Weather and what to pack

When to visit

Is Saranda really t hat cheap?

Things to watch out from

Best food and cocktail places

How to get to Saranda

Things to do in Saranda

Where to stay in saranda.

I would like to start with the accommodations and more importantly where exactly to book one! As I feel this can really influence your trip.

Although from a quick glance, it looks like the mountain is not that steep, wrong - it is! I wouldn't book anything higher than the second line!

(in my amateur picture in green I have highlighted the first row and the orange is the second row. I wouldn't book higher than that)

where-to-stay-saranda

Also, I would try to stay close to the port, or at least the promenade as that is where all the best restaurants are and the public beach. Also, the promenade is the nicest part of the city where you can enjoy walks, have lunch and dinner, and also have coffee breaks with amazing views.

saranda-where-to-stay

The green circle includes the port, promenade, and 'city center'. I believe staying within the green circle is the best option. Orange is also good enough but will require 10 to 15 minutes to get to most places. The orange circle starts at the end of the promenade.

Pass the red line are only hotels, beach bars, and restaurants. It gets very quiet there after the peak season.

Said this, if you do prefer staying in the hotel and have direct private access to the beach then you might want to book more to the right because you still get restaurants and shops around there just there might be fewer options or you need to walk more to get to some places.

I have compiled a list of the best hotels in Saranda starting from the ones with direct access to a private beach to those close to the city center in my Saranda Hotel Guide !

Saranda, as a tourist city, is fairly safe. I was walking alone during the evening and I felt safe the whole time. So safety-wise all areas are alright. There are no specific ones I would highlight.

Weather in Saranda

saranda-travel-guide

You might be wondering, "When's the ideal time to visit?" While summer is a popular choice, I'd personally vouch for late September to early October. Why? Summer temperatures can soar to 34°C, and the sun is extremely strong. Contrast that with October's pleasant 24°C, and you get a comfortable climate without the intense heat. Plus, with most kids back in school by September, there are fewer tourists around. I was in Saranda throughout October and had just one rainy day and three overcast ones— a refreshing chnage after enjoying warm beach days for the rest of the month.

Saranda boasts over 300 sunny days a year, making it a preferred destination even during the shoulder seasons.

What to pack for Saranda?

Please learn from my mistake and do not pack warm clothes! I am always cold so I got a few jumpers and jackets just so I am warm and cozy in the evening. Wrong! The whole of October I spent in a T-shirt and shorts! The climate here ensures it is warm all day long and in the evening too. it doesn't really get cold during the nights. The humidity is quite high and the whole time I have been here there has been no cold wind. So I wish I had packed more beach stuff and fewer autumn ones. All my jumpers didn't exit the closet the whole time I was in Saranda!

So definitely add to your list swimwear, towel, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen! I was applying sunscreen even if I just went for a coffee because the sun in this area is very strong! I used SPF 30 and that was completely enough for October. For August I probably would use SPF 50.

Also, If you are into snorkeling I recommend taking your goggles and underwater camera aka GoPro because the water around the area is crystal clear and you can do snorkeling around the coast.

When to visit Saranda?

saranda-albania

I genuinely believe the latter part of September and early October is the optimal time to visit. However, a heads-up: when I arrived on the 1st of October, the city was still quite lively, but some establishments had already wrapped up for the season. It seems some cafes cater primarily to the summer crowd. Yet, a solid 80% remained operational. Naturally, numerous local spots stay open year-round. As October wore on, a few more places started closing. Whilst the port and promenade area still stayed fairly lively, the hotel part had gone very quiet by the end of October. So I believe the later you visit, the closer to the port and promenade you would prefer to stay.

Is Saranda that cheap?

Saranda has been hyped up as this affordable travel destination in Europe. I agree and I disagree. Let's dive into why!

Initially, while flights to Tirana, the capital, tend to be affordable, direct routes from many countries are limited. Often, the most cost-effective tickets are from Milan or the UK. This typically requires travelers to book two separate flights, and if you're carrying hand luggage or larger bags, you might find yourself paying extra fees for both segments! So cheap to fly there, but no really.

Yes, apartments and hotels are cheaper but food is still the same prices as in Europe. This goes to groceries in the shop and prices for dishes in restaurants. So while you might spend a bit less on the accommodation you will still pay the average Europen price for food. This also goes for tours, the prices I checked were not that cheap. They are not expensive also. So I believe this is very 50/50. If you really research and go only to local tavernas and do budget your tours etc, then yes you can do a budget trip but if you just coming for a holiday and want to enjoy yourself then it will be pretty standard European prices.

saranda

Big warning!

As we touched upon the money, I have to highlight that this place is CASH ONLY . And by only I mean only only. The only places in the whole of Saranda that will accept the card are the grocery stores and even then only if you reach a certain amount. If it is anything less than 10 Euros, you can only pay with cash. I ate at a few different restaurants, had coffee at several cafes, and non of them accepted a card. Which is a bit shocking to me. Even street vendors in South America had a little card machine! And now I am back in Europe and can't pay with a card. And the most bizarre thing was that I took a 30-minute boat to Corfu and I could pay with a card everywhere!

Said that, they do have ATMs on each corner, that offer to withdraw Albanian Leks and Euros. Also, everyone everywhere will accept Euros but the rate will be horrible. Euro value currently is very bad and 1800 Leks are around 17 Euros, but in the restaurant, if the bill comes as 1800 Leks and you only have Euros they will say 18 Euros. Not a big loss if you are hungry and you do not care on the first night but paying with Euros on a daily basis will not be a smart idea.

So to summarize, ideally you get Leks beforehand but also if you arrive and you only have Euros, no worries, for the first night Euros will be enough. You can easily sort out Leks upon your arrival. There are many exchange points.

Best food places in Saranda

I have to say, in general, I am not impressed with what Saranda had to offer food-wise, but of course, I did manage to find 2 amazing places that had great value for money, and most importantly the food was actually excellent!

One place is on the promenade and has the best Greek salad in Saranda, oven-baked pizza, and some traditional goodies, all for really good prices. It is called Nasto and I highly recommend it!

The other one is a veggie place called Green Life that offers amazing vegetarian dishes, only you will need to hike up the mountain. It is the only vegan restaurant in Albania!

Another place despite prices not being too cheap, that I can recommend is La Petit . Wonderful ambiance in the evening for dinner and during the day you can rent the sunbeds by the little private beach. Not too far from the promenade. Only, they were one of the places that did close down in mid-October. But this just confirms my theory - the further out in the hotel zone you are the sooner places close down.

As per cocktails, I have to mention Jericho Bar because it is supposedly the oldest standing bar in Saranda. They have a great selection of cocktails and wonderful views of the promenade. Great sunset-watching spot!

If you want to eat on a budget, make sure you visit restaurants that have the word 'Taverna' before the name. Those tend to be the most budget-friendly places.

How to get to Saranda?

As I mentioned before one way is to fly into Tirana, the capital, and then either get a bus or rent a car and make your way down to Saranda.

Another way how you can get directly to Saranda is by boat from Corfu. You have to fly into Corfu, take a taxi or bus to the Port (10-minute ride), and get a boat to Saranda. There are 2 companies that do that: Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways . Both are very similar but I preferred Ionian Seaways. They offer a speed boat that takes 30 minutes to get to Saranda. For the timetable please check their web pages as the schedule changes depending on the season.

Upon arrival, you will need to go through the passport control. So make sure you have your documents with you!

things-to-do-saranda

My top recommendation would be a stroll along the promenade . It's a relatively short walk, but thoroughly delightful as you observe the lively atmosphere and watch the locals go about their day.

I would also recommend having a coffee at the embankment in the middle of the promenade. From there you will get amazing views of Saranda and will be at the heart of the city!

Enjoy the crystal clear water at the public beach or pick on the beach bars where you can not only lie by the shore on the beach beds but have lunch and cocktails too.

Enjoy of the many boat rides to different beaches. All the boat tours you will find every day by the embankment. They offer daily departures so an easy one to sort out the night before or in the morning. But

Last but not least is the Lekuresi Castle at the top of Saranda Hill. You either make a hike out of it and hike up or include it as a stop on a day when you have rented a car. The ideal time to visit this castle will be just before the sun goes down as the top of the hill is a great sunset spot!

Those would be my best recommendations for the things to do in Saranda but if you have time, make sure to include some of these day trips:

10 + Unmissable Day Trips from Saranda, and How to get there!

10 + Unmissable Day Trips from Saranda, and How to get there!

Unmissable Day Trips from Saranda

Saranda is the largest city on the Albanian Riviera. This beach town is not to everyone’s taste, but it is certainly a great base for exploring the gems of southern Albania. There are many great things to do in the city but we’re here to check out the absolutely unmissable day trips from Saranda.

Relax at Ksamil Beach and Islands

The first of our day trips from Saranda is to this extraordinary beach. Beautiful Ksamil is only a 30-minute bus ride from Saranda (see Butrint bus details further down the page).

The bright white sands and glittering turquoise waters attract a lot of tourists during the summer. But if you visit off season, it’s like a private paradise.

Ksamil has several smaller beaches, many of which are owned by bars or restaurants, so it’s often necessary to pay for a sun lounger. Saying that, it will only cost a couple of Euros (or free with a meal or drink in the off season) and you can watch the sunset over the islands with a cocktail in your hand.

Avoid visiting in August, as the crowds get a little crazy, but there is a great party atmosphere. However, there are no big chain hotels in town and many businesses are family owned. This makes Ksamil feel like a more relaxed and blissful beach location than others in Europe.

Boat trips are a popular choice amongst visitors to Ksamil. Many boat tours include a meal and drinks so it is a really fun way to see some of the smaller islands and enjoy the sea air.

Day trips from Saranda Ksamil

Day Trips from Saranda – Be Mesmerized by The Blue Eye (Syri I Kalter)

Syri I Kalter is a captivating and intriguing body of water in southern Albania, making it a great day trip from Saranda. The Blue Eye is shrouded in mystery and local legend. The blue Eye, or Syri i Kalter in Albanian, is a natural water spring of unknown depth and chilling temperatures. The centre of the spring is a deep, dark blue, whilst the surrounding water is a fresh green fading out to the white of the pebbly shore, giving it the vague appearance of a huge eye.

Take the bus from Saranda to the Blue Eye

It is possible to take a minibus from Saranda to the Blue Eye. The bus departs from a stop next to the Synagogue remains on Rruga Flamurit. See it on the map  HERE . You can buy the tickets on the bus. Tell the driver you are going to Syri i Kalter, this is a popular stop, and they will know what you mean. You will know when you have arrived as most people get off here. The bus ride will cost 300Lek (about €2) for a one-way journey and you will need to pay in cash. The Blue Eye is within easy reach making it a great day trip from Saranda

Day trips from Saranda Blue Eye

Buses can get busy so don’t be shocked if the driver whips out some spare plastic stools to place down the aisle for standing passengers to take a seat!

The bus will drop you off on the main road near the park entrance. Here, there is a small entry fee of 50Lek (€0.40) for pedestrians and 200Lek (€1.60) for cars – don’t forget to take enough cash! Then there is a walk of roughly 2km along a dirt track towards the river. Click  HERE  to see where the bus drops you and how to walk from there.

The area can get very busy in the summer, so we recommend arriving as early as possible to avoid any crowds – or visit off season. There is a restaurant close by and it’s a good place for a quick refreshment. There is not much else around so it’s definitely worth taking a day bag with a few supplies. However, you will probably only need to spend half a day here

Day Trips from Saranda – Visit Gjirokaster’s Ottoman Streets from Saranda

The stone city of Gjirokaster is well known for its incredible Ottoman architecture and spectacular castle. This is possibly one of the best day trips from Saranda.

To get to Gjirokaster, you can take the same bus from Saranda that goes to the Blue Eye. The journey will take between an hour and an hour and a half. The road is winding as it slopes up and down the Gjerë Mountains, but the scenery is spectacular! Just look out for the occasional flock of sheep that might slow you down.

Day trips from Saranda Gjirokaster

There are many amazing things to keep you busy in Gjirokaster. The city is immersed in history and bursting with magnificent Ottoman architecture. The highlight for us was the imposing castle perched above the old town. Make sure you also check out the Old Bazaar, with some great souvenir shops, and stop for a strong coffee in one of the quaint coffee shops at the side of the picturesque, cobbled streets. We combined a trip to the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster on the same day. It is a long day but easy to do if you plan your bus route well or have a car.

Day Trips from Saranda – Go Back in Time at Butrint National Park

A journey to Butrint is certainly one of the most interesting day trips from Saranda!  We first heard about this UNESCO site on our visit to  Tirana  earlier in the year. Several locals advised us that it was one of the most fascinating and complete historical sites in the Balkans. They were right!

Roman baths, a large amphitheatre, an acropolis dating back to the 8th Century BC and, our favourite, the relatively intact basilica from the 6th century, were just a few of the ancient gems of Butrint. We also learned that prehistoric sites have been identified within the area and the earliest evidence of occupation dates back to 50,000 BC. The civilization was eventually abandoned due to the progression of the marshland.

Day trips from Saranda Butrint

The admission cost to Butrint National Park is 700Lek (about €5.70) and you will need at least half a day to really appreciate the history and beauty of the area. It was not busy when we visited in the height of summer, so it was very easy to let your imagination run wild amongst the ancient stones. There is not much shade, however, and the summer sun is strong. So be prepared if you visit in the heat.

How to Get to Butrint

It’s easy to take the  bus from Saranda to Butrint National Park . The bus stop is located near the Port of Saranda. About 200 meters to the east you will see a roundabout with a huge tree in the middle and lots of cars screeching in every direction.

The bus departs from  here . During the summer the buses run roughly twice per hour – but this is Albania, timetables are not strictly adhered to if at all. The journey only takes about 30 – 40 minutes and costs 100 lek (€0.80) for a one-way ticket. This bus also passes through Ksamil if you fancy a stop at the beach as well!

Fancy a Day trip from Saranda to Corfu?

The Greek Island of Corfu is just a few miles away from Albania by ferry . There are many ferry companies on this route in the peak seasons and most of them will take around 30 minutes and cost about €20 -50. You can book online  here and it’s definitely better to book in advance during the busy summer season.

Day trips from Saranda Corfu

Corfu is a busy little island with plenty to offer. Visit the Old Venetian Fortress that looks out across the Ionian water. You might even catch a glimpse of Albania on a clear day. The main town has many beautiful streets lined with cafes, restaurants and small shops. This is a great place to take a stroll and enjoy a Greek gyro and a Frappe. Feeling a bit more playful? Visit Corfu waterpark for some superb slides and pools. Or do some hiking and appreciate some of the island’s wonderful nature.

Day Trips from Saranda – Visit More of Albania’s Incredible Beaches

Take a day trip from Saranda to some of the lesser-known beaches , such as Himara. Possibly one of the most glamorous beaches in Albania, Himara enjoys the sun all year round.

Sailing and fishing boats pass in and out of the harbor while the town offers plenty of clubs, cafes and restaurants. Borsh, Porto Palermo and Lukova beaches are also nearby. It is also easy to visit ancient Borsh castle from here.

There are only a few buses per day from Saranda to Himara. There is one at 11:30am but it’s always best to arrive early and ask the guys at the bus stop. The buses depart from Rruga Flamurit near the Synagogue.

The Village of Qeparo

The Village of Qeparo

Located just north of Himara, and less than 1 hour drive from Saranda, the small village of Qeparo makes an excellent day trip. The village is split into two parts. Lower Qeparo lines the sea front while Upper Qeparo lies around 300m above sea level.

The upper portion of the village has lain partially abandoned since the 1990s after the fall of Communism. However, it is full of character and surrounded by breath-taking views. The village is lined with charming old paths, crumbling stone buildings and walls and there are colourful flowers everywhere during the summer.

A Day Trip from Saranda to Permet

Take a day trip from Saranda to the thermal baths of Permet. An early start is needed as the drive can take over 2 hours and the journey is even longer by bus. However, it is totally worth it!

On arrival, the smell of sulphur in unmistakeable, and a little unpleasant. However, the beauty of the area far outweighs the smell. The ancient bridge crossing the green water is quite a spectacle and the views from the top are unbeatable.

There is a small car park at the Thermal baths and it costs 200L for parking at the site. If you plan on swimming in the river, be aware that there is mud on the river bed.

There is a nice hiking route from the town of Permet to thermal baths. You can also visit Kanioni i Lengarices – a captivating canyon and Kisha e Shen Merise or the Church of Saint Mary. There are many activities available on the Vjosa River including rafting and camping. However, the river is currently being explored for oil so double check before you go.

The bus leaves Saranda for Permet at 7:30 am daily and costs 600Lek (€5). Remember to check at the bus station for return times.

Thermal Baths Permet

Visit the Rural Village of Delvina

Delvina is a small mountain town off the beaten track. However, it is only a 25 minute drive from saranda! There is also a bus. This day trip from Saranda provides an opportunity to see the real Albania. Relax and enjoy the slow pace of life, have some barbequed meat and enjoy a coffee.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, climb up to the castle – Kalaja e Delvinës – for some amazing views. There are also many mosques and churches and some good hiking paths to explore.

Day Trips from Saranda – Finiq Archaeological Park

This is another fantastic day trip for history buffs! The site is not as impressive as Butrint, but you might have the ruins to yourself. There is also a really authentic feeling to the place as it is virtually untouched and lies in a rural setting.

To get from Saranda to Finiq, find out how to take the bus HERE . The ruins are in better shape than the road leading to them so be carful driving or walking. There is a small entrance fee of 200Lek but there is not always someone there to accept payment. There is a short but steep climb to the top – around 30 meters or so.

This diverse site holds Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins and a few cold war bunkers. The ancient stones are surrounded by glorious views and colourful wildlife. Amongst other things, there is an Amphitheatre. However, it is not that well preserved.

Finiq is amazing if you love hiking, history or being in the great outdoors. There are no shops nearby so make sure to take provisions. Wear good shoes and maybe long trousers to protect your legs, there are some mean plants up there protecting the ruins!

A Day Trip from Saranda to Berat

To visit Berat from Saranda in a day, you will need to be up with the birds. The bus from Saranda to Berat leaves at 8am. If you are driving, you might want to leave earlier as there is loads to see!

This city began as an Illyrian settlement in the 6th century BC. The streets are lined with Ottoman houses earning it the nickname, “The town of 1000 windows”.

Berat Castle sits atop the mountain and overlooks the city and the surrounding valley. Take a hike to the top to explore the ancient castle and absorb the remarkable views. You might even learn the folklore tale of Baba Tomorre .

There is a fascinating ethnographic museum that provides an interesting history of the area and its people. There are also many beautiful mosques and churches to marvel at throughout the city.

Should I Rent a Car to take a Day Trip from Saranda?

This is a tricky one, and definitely down to personal preference. Albania’s public transport is cheap and cheerful and most places are accessible by bus. However, there are very few railways in Albania. The buses – or furgons – are great for travelling between towns and cities. However, the timetable can be a bit restrictive. If you can haggle, a taxi driver will take you anywhere!

Hitchhiking  in Albania is a popular way to get around and is supposedly perfectly safe. We have not tried this ourselves but have spoken to many successful hitchers.

If you decide to rent a car in Albania, please make sure you take out the full insurance. Drivers in the Balkans have their own unique style… On our last visit to Saranda we spent 3 days in the town and witnessed 2 crashes.

Plan your journey in advance as there are many small roads that are not more than dirt tracks. Several mountain routes can be perilous if you do not plan ahead and take great care.

If you take the plunge and decide that driving is best for you, try  SIXT . They are really handy if you are based in Saranda and are located just beside the port.

The Albanian Language

Many Albanians in the cities speak a little English but it is useful to learn a few phrases in Albanian. It is certainly not an easy language for English speakers, but any attempt is greatly appreciated by the locals. Here are a few words to try out:

Hello  Tungjatjeta ( toon-jah-TYEH-tah )

Please  Ju lutem ( yoo LOO-tehm )

Thank you  Faleminderit ( fah-lehm-meen-DEH-reet )

Yes  Po ( poh )

No  Jo ( yoh )

Goodbye  Mirupafshim ( meer-oo-PAHF-sheem )

Where to go next

Ready for another adventure? Why not try travelling from  Saranda to Ohrid , North Macedonia? There is plenty of history and nature to discover in beautiful Ohrid.

Final note: Things change in the Balkans all the time and there is not much information online in English. We would definitely advise checking with a local where possible. We found people to be really friendly and super helpful.

What an excellent guide for seeing different places from Saranda! Albania is high on my list of places to visit and I’d love spending time at the beaches! I’d also enjoy the stone city, city of a 1000 windows and taking a ferry to Corfu. I didn’t realize how close Corfu is!

I’ve heard of Butrint before! This would be my first choice for a day trip, but the other ones that you’ve mentioned all look equally as appealing too. Thanks for the handy tips!

5 Amazing Day Trips To Take From Saranda | Albania

30 August 2018.

Saranda is the kind of place that tends to divide travellers.

Some will say you simply  have to visit, while others will hum and haw before reluctantly conceding that it’s only ok.

Without a doubt, it’s one of the most visited spots in Albania – a magnet for Balkan and Greek locals looking for an affordable beach getaway, a humming beach town with an easy balance between lively and laidback and a major transport hub for southern Albania.

It’s also somewhere that can get a little crazy come summer which is where this divisiveness tends to creep in.

But whether Saranda is your kind of place or not, it’s a perfect jumping off point for several excellent day trips that will allow you to escape the crowds and experience an utterly different side of Albania – one woven with history, incredible natural beauty and wonderfully uncrowded shores.

Looking to escape the city? These are the best day trips from Saranda.

A visit to Albania’s Butrint is like walking through the pages of history.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first to be listed in Albania, was inhabited and built by the ancient Greeks and Romans over centuries only to be left in abandoned in the Middle Ages.

Set in a beautiful forested area that sprawls across the peninsula, the ruins are very well preserved, though the amphitheatre, basilica and castle are the most impressive sights. The spectacular floor mosaics found at the baptistery are unfortunately covered year-round as part of the park’s conservation measures, but they are due to be unveiled for a short period again in 2021.

Until then, don’t miss the information panels which show its intricate design and how the complex has changed with each new ruler – it’s quite incredible.

Get There  |   Buses run every hour between downtown Saranda and Butrint via Ksamil for 100 lek (€0.80). The entrance fee to Butrint National Park is 700 lek (€5.60) and it takes 2 to 3 hours to visit the entire complex.

Take A Tour  |   Love history? Consider a  Guided Tour of Butrint  which includes an in-depth tour of the complex, private transfers and park entrance fee.

5 Amazing Day Trips From Saranda | Albania. Saranda can get a little hectic in summer, but luckily it's also a perfect jump off point for a number of excellent day trips, including Butrint National Park, Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster.

READ NEXT: 11 INCREDIBLE THINGS TO DO IN ALBANIA

Ridiculously blue and deliciously cool, it’s no surprise Ksamil is Albania’s premier beach destination.

While the beaches that wrap around the city do get understandably jam-packed in summer, there are several further afield that still remain pleasantly uncrowded, such as Monastery and Pasqyrave beaches and the hidden beach between them, or head to the opposite side of town and sprawl out on the shores around Last Bay.

Get There  |   Buses run every hour between downtown Saranda and Ksamil for 100 lek (€0.80). For the beaches located before Ksamil town, just tell the driver when you’re ready to get out.

5 Amazing Day Trips From Saranda | Albania. Saranda can get a little hectic in summer, but luckily it's also a perfect jump off point for a number of excellent day trips, including Butrint National Park, Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster.

Clattering up the steep slopes of the Gjerë Mountains, the slate grey rooftops of Gjirokaster and its imposing castle paint a rather pretty picture.

Lying just an hour away from Saranda, this enchanting old town – one of Albania’s most beautiful in my mind – is an easy day trip that will leave you with plenty of time to explore.

Don’t miss the 12th-century castle on the hillside where you can easily lose an hour between the spectacular views of the Drina Valley and the trio of museums. Enjoy a tour of Ottoman-era Skenduli House run by the descendants of the original inhabitants, browse the souvenirs at the old bazaar and clamber up the steep hills to the historic museum for the best views of the UNESCO-listed city. More adventurous types can climb even further to Ali Pasha’s Bridge which arcs across the river.

Gjirokaster ended up being one of my favourite towns in Albania so if you’ve got the time, I’d highly recommend making your visit here more than just a day trip.

Get There  |   Buses or furgons leave every hour or so from Saranda and will drop you on the main road below Gjirokaster. The trip costs 400 lek (€3.20) and takes around 1.5 hours. To reach the old town it’s a steep 30-minute walk or a short taxi ride. To return, buses leave when full from the Kastrati Petrol Station on the main road or you can flag down any Saranda bound bus coming from Tirana.

Take A Tour  |   A number of operators in Saranda offer day tours to Gjirokaster, or you can reach the city on your own and join a  Gjirokaster City Tour  to take in all the main sights.

5 Amazing Day Trips From Saranda | Albania. Saranda can get a little hectic in summer, but luckily it's also a perfect jump off point for a number of excellent day trips, including Butrint National Park, Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster.

Along such a gorgeous stretch of the Ionian Coast, where turquoise waters caress paper white pebbled shores, Saranda is hardly the most attractive of the bunch. But head north and you’ll find a number of beautiful sandy bays and uncrowded shores to lay your towel on.

Perrenially laidback Himara is a popular choice, while Gjipe , Porto Palermo, Bunec, Lukova and Livadhi, along with the multitude of tiny secluded coves that lie sprinkled between them, are also great options for a beach day.

Planning on spending plenty of time sprawled out on the beach? There’s a guide coming soon on Albania’s best beaches.

Get There  |   Though it is possible, getting to some of these beaches by public transport is rather difficult.

Officially, there are just two buses running between Saranda and Vlore each day which can drop you at any of these beaches or the turnoff that leads to them. In reality though, buses are far more frequent, in summer anyway, but they do seem to run on their own schedule so aren’t all that reliable.

If you are comfortable with the risks it present, hitchhiking along this part of the coast is very popular as there’s only one main road and most travellers I met were able to find a ride in less than five minutes. Better though is to  hire a car  to explore the gorgeous coastline, even if it’s just for a day.

5 Amazing Day Trips From Saranda | Albania. Saranda can get a little hectic in summer, but luckily it's also a perfect jump off point for a number of excellent day trips, including Butrint National Park, Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster.

Set in a lush tangle of jungle, Albania’s Blue Eye is one of the most popular destinations for day-trippers from Saranda, and while it’s a beautiful place to visit, I’ll add one very important caveat – don’t bother going in the peak summer period unless you plan to arrive super early or late.

As the source of the Bistrica River, where bone-chillingly cold water bubbles up from a depth of more than 50 m amidst the trees, it certainly has the potential to be a wonderfully peaceful oasis, a perfect place to relax and cool off from the blistering sun. But as the pools are quite small and the parking lot perhaps far larger than it ought to be, the area unfortunately gets disgustingly crowded in July and August.

Outside of peak season, you’re likely to have a much more enjoyable experience.

Get There  |   To get to the Blue Eye, you can jump on virtually any north-bound bus except those taking the coastal route and you’ll be dropped at the turnoff on the main road. The trip takes a little under an hour and costs 300 lek (€2.40).

A few hundred metres down the road you’ll reach the entry point where you need to pay the 50 lek (€0.40) entrance fee and from there it’s around 30 minutes along a dusty road to reach Blue Eye.

Returning is a bit more difficult as you’ll need to flag down a bus on the main road coming from Tirana or Gjirokaster. They pass at least every hour or so but tend to leave when full at their departure point so can be a little unpredictable.

If you’re travelling by car, the Blue Eye is a perfect detour on the way between Saranda and Gjirokaster.

Take A Tour  |   This  Blue Eye Tour includes a stop at Lekuresi Castle to enjoy the panoramic views.

Pssst…. Want an Albanian Blue Eye experience in the middle of summer without the crowds? The icy aqua pool near Theth in the country’s north is even more beautiful and only sees a dozen or so visitors a day.

5 Amazing Day Trips From Saranda | Albania. Saranda can get a little hectic in summer, but luckily it's also a perfect jump off point for a number of excellent day trips, including Butrint National Park, Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Gjirokaster.

DON’T MISS: THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN TIRANA, ALBANIA’S CAPITAL OF COOL

Hovering tantalisingly close to Saranda’s pebbly shores, the hulking mass of Corfu and all that a day on a Greek Island implies is almost too much to resist.

Plus, if you plan it right, you might even get to travel there by Hydrofoil which basically looks like a boat from the future.

Get There  |   Dozens of agencies sell ferry trips to Corfu throughout the day for around €20 each way. If you’re travelling in summer, I’d recommend booking your ticket at least a day in advance to ensure you can get there early enough to allow enough time on the island.

Once on Corfu, you can zip around by bus with services run by  City Bus  and  Green Buses , or you can  rent a car .

Also remember that Corfu is part of Greece and so falls inside the Schengen Zone so be sure to have a visa if required.

Take A Tour  |   Corfu is a huge island with plenty to offer. If the bus timetables are limiting your plans and you don’t plan to rent a car, a tour could a good option – spend the day tasting olive oil and wine or cruising between some of the area’s prettiest towns.

With all this day-tripping, you’ll want to find a perfect place to base yourself in the city itself. Saranda is built around a tight bowl that rolls toward the sea so bear in mind that anything not on the road or two beside the waterfront will be uphill.

Although Butrint is more beautiful and important than any other archaeological park in the country, Albania is home to other interesting sites that you can include in your travel itinerary.
