We provide transportation, and located next to the cruise piers where we use the dock there to pick up our guests. Marine park fees included. Make sure that the tour operator has Marine Park permits, because many do not and are pirates and are not allowed to snorkel/dive in the Marine Park, which includes Palancar Reef, Colombia Reef & El Cielo Sandbar. 80% of boats do not have these, so make sure they do. They no longer provide permits, and if you are on a boat that doesn't, it could ruin your day in Cozumel if they are stopped. So avoid purchasing tours from vendors outside cruise ship piers and ferry.

There are numerous excellent snorkeling locations accessible from shore all along the west coast of the island. The clear water and abundant reefs make for plenty of spectacular Cozumel snorkeling sites for visitors to explore. Here are just some of the beautiful snorkeling sites you can reach from the shore.

  MONEY BAR / DZUL HA

(Depth: 10′ – 30′)

Accessible from the Moneybar Beach Club, Dzul Ha is famous for it’s clear water and abundant sea life. There are steps down into the water for easy access and typically minimal current, making this a great spot for novice snorkelers to jump in and play. Brightly colored parrotfish, schools of seargent majors, crabs, eels and more.

  PLAYA CORONA

(Depth: 5′ – 30′)

Calm and clear waters make this southern “locals” beach club a favorite for shore snorkeling. Bring your own gear or rent on-site at the restaurant. There is no entrance fee but it is recommended to spend some money at the restaurant to support the facilities. Trust us, it is well worth it for access to the nearby reefs where an abundance of tropical fish and even the occasional eagle ray can be spotted. Enter the water and go to the right (north) for 50-100m and stay in the shallows for some great sea life.

  CHANKANAAB PARK

(Depth: 5′ – 40′)

This reef is located in front of Chankanaab Nature Park and is one of the most popular Cozumel snorkeling sites due to the mild currents and shallow depths. You will be able to experience loads of colorful coral, the Cozumel Toadfish, rays, lobster and a plethora of vibrant fish species. The park entry fee is a bit pricey but there is much to explore.

  VILLABLANCA REEF

(Depth: 10′ – 20′)

Near town, Villa Blanca Reef is accessible from several docks near the Villablanca Hotel. There is a fair amount of boat traffic nearby, so it’s recommended more for adult snorkelers. Plenty of coral abounds and a large variety of sea life make for some lovely snorkeling close to town.

Responsible Snorkeling In Cozumel

Please keep in mind that sunblock, even reef-safe brands, are not allowed in the waters of the Mexican Caribbean as it kills the reef and the sea life. Please be mindful of this when you go snorkeling in Cozumel and bring hats, sarongs and towels to keep your skin safe when you are out of the water and a swim shirt for when you’re snorkeling. As you enjoy the beauty of the sea you will feel fabulous knowing your presence isn’t harming it.

When To Visit Cozumel

The tropical climate in Cozumel is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F) it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine. Also, this is the hurricane season so keep an eye on the forecasts. Fewer tourists so you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Cozumel. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings.

Thanks for this important article! However, after googling Chankanaab Nature Park, it seems this place is hardly ecological – with captive dolphin shows, manatees and seals and intensive development of the beach. Correct me if I am wrong, but if this is the same place it should hardly be on the list for ecological things to do in Cozumel.

So Chankanab Eco Park is a decades-old state nature park with a cenote, marine preserve, underwater cave system, forests and more. A few years back, the northern edge of the park was unfortunately leased to a developer who built the dolphin/animal show that you are referring to. Dolphin Discovery is its own separate business next to the Chankanab Nature park that shares a parking lot but charges its own entry fee and isn’t run by (or associated with) the state park whatsoever. I’m not sure if Dolphin Discovery will remain in that location however as Mexico recently banned dolphin shows a few weeks ago. Chankanab has a coral rehabilitation and growth project in the water there that you can snorkel over and see where they are growing new coral pieces.

Wow, this really covers everything someone would need to know about snorkeling in Cozumel. I wish I saw this when I was there last summer. I will be checking out some of these tours the next time though!

Are there whalesharks in Cozumel? If so, who do you recommend we contact about snorkeling with them?

Seasonally, from around April thru August, Whalesharks can be found feeding on the plankton pushed to the surface off the coast of the small island, Holbox, which is west and north of Cancun.

10 BEST Cozumel Snorkeling Spots (For Families And Singles!)

Cozumel, Mexico, is a beautiful island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo. It’s a well-known vacation spot due to the fantastic weather, decadent food, white sand beaches, top-notch resorts, and snorkeling opportunities, but you’ll want to go between March and June to avoid the rainy seasons! You can also go during the winter months if you don’t mind a bit of chill in the air in the evenings.

As Cozumel is a Caribbean island, it’s surrounded by gorgeous reefs with dozens of fish species and beautiful coral in warm waters teeming with sea life. You can bring your own snorkeling gear and explore the reefs along the beaches, or sign up for one of the many guided tours, heading out on a boat to offshore reefs that are more than worth the excursion!

Below, you’ll find the top ten destinations for snorkeling in Cozumel, as well as a few suggestions on where to book, but don’t forget to sit back and relax along one of the beautiful beaches with a Pina Colada in one hand and a good book in the other for a reset while you’re there. Many of these places are great for an afternoon in Cozumel if you come in on a cruise ship, too. 

It’s up to you whether you want to book through the cruise or wander around until you find a cheaper option on the island. Just be sure to make it back to your cruise in time to depart! Unless you decide you want to stay and enjoy the island for a bit longer. We wouldn’t blame you one bit!

1. Chankanaab Park

Location: Chankanaab, 77688 Quintana Roo, Mexico | Hours: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Saturday | Admission Cost: $26 per Adult, $18 per Child 4-12, Free 3 and Under

Named Cozumel’s top attraction, Chankanaab is an adventure park located inside the National Reef Marine Park. They have ecological tours, a sea lion show with manatees, snorkeling and scuba diving tours, dolphins to swim with, a spa, and a tequila and mezcal tour!

The reef at Chankanaab has been heavily damaged due to tourism, but efforts are underway to rebuild it using artificial sculptures reminiscent of an underwater museum. Even with a dwindling reef, you’ll still get the chance to see many different species of fish. You’ll have the option of snorkeling with family and friends right off the beach or joining one of their many tours available and heading further out to one of the places listed below, so feel free to choose whether you’d like to spend an hour or three on a boat as opposed to chilling on the beach between snorkeling breaks! 

While you’re there, keep in mind that this is a very popular spot for tourists to visit, so the waters may be a bit crowded during peak hours. It’s best to snorkel near the beach as soon as they open or an hour before closing.

2. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

Location: Autopista Km. 30 Sur Matamoros Norte-Centro-Sur, Guaycura, San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico | Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Saturday | Admission Cost: $26 per Adult, $18 per Child 4-12, Free 3 and Under

Punta Sur is an Eco Park with over 250 acres of natural landscape to traverse and explore, including lagoons perfect for snorkeling. It’s on the southernmost point of Cozumel and has a gorgeous beach and a beautiful reef. While the reef is half the excitement, you’ll need to be a good swimmer and wear a mandatory life jacket if you head out that way. 

It takes nearly half an hour of swimming to make it out to the coral-laden reef system, which you’ll see is marked with a white buoy out in the water. Starting at that point, you can let the current carry you from one end of the reef to the other while you watch the sea life dart in and out of the coral. The visibility is excellent, so it’s entirely worth the effort, but it’s not an experience for newbies. 

Once you’ve finished snorkeling and taken a well-deserved break along the beach, be sure to check out the Mayan ruins and alligator pit. Punta Sur is the kind of place where you want to spend an entire day exploring and not miss a bit of it!

Location: The Money Bar Beach Club, Carr. Costera Sur Km 6.5-Sur, Zona Hotelera Nte., 77675 San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico | Hours: 7:00 am to 9:30 pm Daily| Approximate Cost: $45+

Dzul Ha is a reef accessible from The Money Bar, a rustic beach club with old-fashioned umbrellas, great food, heavy-handed drinks, and a thatched hut along a white sandy beach with chairs. Many people go just for the drinks, but most head that way for the spectacular snorkeling. There are giant schools of fish, plenty of fan coral, large manta rays, and even the occasional sea turtle!

Those who frequent Cozumel often say that if you only go on one snorkeling excursion, make sure it’s this one. You can rent snorkeling gear from The Money Bar or bring your own and spend hours in the water. Even better, the beach club has excellent service, so if you want to take a break, head on in for a bite to eat before securing your snorkeling mask back in place. 

When you go, make sure your sunscreen is biodegradable. The reef is in good shape, but certain sunscreens can do heavy damage over time. The Money Bar also offers a spectacular six-hour Jeep tour and a five-hour Dune Buggy adventure, so don’t feel as if you’ll only snorkel on the property. There’s plenty to see and do!

4. Playa Palancar

Playa Palancar is another excellent beach club in Cozumel, with superb food and tasty Caribbean drinks. It’s also home to one of the best snorkeling destinations on the island. In fact, many snorkeling tours will take you to Playa Palancar to showcase how beautiful the waters surrounding Cozumel can be. 

When you get there, you’ll have the option of signing up for a reef tour, and we highly recommend it. You’ll see three different reefs with all the equipment provided. If you’d rather stay near the beach, be prepared for tons of fish! There are only a few species that call this area home, but they’re are so many of each you won’t feel as if you’d missed out. 

Snorkeling equipment rentals are only $10, but for an additional $25, you get the boat tour, which is money well spent! Even better, most cruise lines use other places to book, so this area is relatively calm and roomy compared to the more crowded excursion setups.

5. San Miguel 

Location: San Miguel de Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico | Hours: Varies on Access Location | Approximate Cost: Free Entry

San Miguel is the largest city in Cozumel and home to many of the best snorkeling destinations on the island because the water is calm and protected from the waves on this side. The town is lively and has a lot to offer, including a Mayan Bee Sanctuary, Coral Reefs Monument, Capilla Santa Cruz, and tons of really cool snorkeling options. 

In San Miguel, you can bring or rent your snorkeling equipment and go your own way on any public beach, or take a glass bottom boat snorkeling tour for only $49, which is one of the top excursions on the island. You’ll also find ATVs for rent, so if you want to find a semi-private beach to go snorkeling for the day, your transportation will kick off the fun. 

While San Miguel doesn’t have a specific place to snorkel, it offers your best bet for getting to all the coolest snorkeling areas, as well as finding the perfect tour for you and your family at the right price. If you show up to Cozumel on a cruise ship, you’ll land in San Miguel, making everything easily accessible.

6. El Cedral

El Cedral is a historic town in Cozumel that is steeped in culture. It’s not very large, but they have some of the best tequila around and excellent snorkeling access. Here, it’s your best bet to join a tour to get out to Paseo El Cedral Reef. It won’t matter where you go because every part of the reef is gorgeous and teeming with sea life. 

If you’re looking to see a specific area, check the schedule. They’re closing down reefs in rotation for two months at a time to keep them healthy, as too much tourism tends to have a negative impact on the coral. That said, you won’t be disappointed with any part of it. It’s perfect for drifting, and you’ll see everything from sea turtles to stingrays and dozens of tropical fish species. You’ll also have a chance to see nurse sharks, giant green moray eels, and even porcupine fish! 

You can turn El Cedral into an entire vacation or head there for the day. There are great restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and plenty of sites to see inland when you’re done with your snorkeling trip. Even better, it’s not a trendy tourist spot, so you’ll get the authentic Cozumel experience.

7. El Cielo

Location: Carretera a Punta sur salida el cielo, 77600 San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico | Hours: 24/7/365 | Approximate Cost: Free Entry

El Cielo is a beach half a mile out on the western side of Cozumel with beautiful white sand, an ocean floor studded with sea stars, and plenty of stingrays hanging about. Unlike many other beaches and destinations on this list, the only way to get to El Cielo is by boat. That said, you can rent a kayak on the island and make it there on your own if that’s your preference. 

The reef off the coast of El Cielo is considered one of the most diverse in the world. It’s protected, allowing it to thrive and making it an amazing experience. Because of this, don’t be surprised if you run into hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins during your dip in the water. Just stay calm and don’t touch the sea life. 

When you get there, you’ll find out why it’s called El Cielo, which translates to Heaven in English. We highly recommend joining a tour of the area to get the most out of your time there, especially if you only have a few hours or a day in Cozumel due to a cruise schedule.

8. Villablanca Reef

Location: Across the Street from C. 5 Sur 241, Adolfo López Mateos, 77667 San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico | Hours: Varies on Booking | Approximate Cost: Free Entry

Located directly across from the Villablanca Hotel, Villablanca Reef Wall is one of the most intense snorkeling experiences within Cozumel. For this reason, it’s not recommended for beginners. Intermediate snorkelers should be fine for the most part, but make sure you have a buddy with you. 

The main issue is that this is where cruise ships dock, and the current can be tricky, dragging you underneath one, which is not a good position to find yourself in, even under the best circumstances. It’s always best to go out with a professional instead of swimming out from shore since they’ll know more about the currents and what’s allowed in the area. 

The reef itself is low, so you’ll be going a bit deeper than some of the other locations require if you want to see the immaculate coral, with all the basket and barrel sponges, as well as black gorgonian and other really neat specimens. This is another reason that it’s better to take a tour or be well versed with a snorkel. You’ll also see plenty of divers in the water, as this is a prime spot for scuba diving as well!

9. Playa Corona

Location: Carretera costera sur km 10, 77600 San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico | Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm | Approximate Cost: $36+ per Person

Playa Corona is located at the Playa Corona Beach Club, a small bar and restaurant off an old access road. It’s just south of Chankanaab, so it doesn’t get nearly as much attention from tourists. While the sand is beautiful, there isn’t much of it, and the deck is small. Don’t let any of this dissuade you! The reef starts right at the shore and is perfect for kids and beginners, with easy access in and out of the water.

You’ll see lots of coral, as well as tons of sea life, like turtles, rays, and tropical fish. Just be careful not to touch the coral and give any sharks a wide berth. 

When you’re done snorkeling, grab a beer and a bite to eat. The prices at Playa Corona Beach Club are great, even if the whole thing is a bit outdated. The food is also delicious and incredibly fresh. This is the perfect place to spend a morning or afternoon in Cozumel.

Columbia Reef is one of the best places in Cozumel for scuba diving, but it also has a shallow portion that makes for a fantastic snorkeling experience. Due to the ecological factors near the reef, it’s one of the healthiest in the area. It’s located between Palancar Deep and the Colombian Pinnacles, towards the coast, offering abundant sea life and astounding coral. 

The location protects it from the harsher waves and storm surges, creating a natural nursery for many species around the island. This also makes it great for beginner snorkelers and kids. You’ll find turtles, barracudas, filefish, grunts, snappers, green morays, octopuses, and juvenile nurse sharks. Because it gets ample sun, you’ll also see the coral flourishing, especially of the Lettuce variety. 

Keep in mind that this site is located within a National Preserve, so you’ll only be able to access it with a licensed operation, and you won’t be able to touch or take anything you see. Fishing is also strictly prohibited, and the divers and snorkelers allowed are restricted to certain volumes.

You won’t get the whole beach party atmosphere with this one, but if you are looking to see marine life, (especially turtles), enjoy the sun, some good food, and some good company as well as a great snorkeling adventure in Cozumel, then this is the Cozumel snorkeling tour for you.

Snorkeling in Cozumel is like no other and you will enjoy your time exploring underwater. With this tour, you will explore four different reefs.

You start off the tour at the Playa del Carmen. You’ll meet your guide and get a quick intro to what you’ll be doing to the tour. Quickly get the group outfitted with your mask, fins and snorkel and the instructions for snorkeling will be given.

You will start your adventure at El Cielo which is the best known reef here, then onto Cielito, which is known for its natural starfish.

5. Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and Cielo Reefs

Through a glass-bottom boat you can see some wonderful marine life and that’s just what you can experience with the Cozumel Snorkeling Tour that takes a guided tour around Cozumel and surrounding areas like Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park and El Cielo.

You will also be able to snorkel through these wonderful areas like Palancar Reef as well. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the marine life around Cozumel first hand.

While on the glass-bottom boat, enjoying the scenery as you drift by, you can enjoy your choice of refreshments from beer, juice, or water and those beverages are bottomless in between the snorkeling stops.

Your snorkeling stops are: El Cielo, where you will spend about 20 minutes in shallow waters with a sandy ocean floor; Columbia Reef, where the visibility is nearly always clear and you can see up to 200 feet, to see sea turtles, coral, and tropical fish.

When to Visit Cozumel

Getting around cozumel, staying safe in cozumel, what to pack for your trip to cozumel, saving money while in cozumel, knowing local customs.

The best time to visit Cozumel is between mid-February and mid-July. During this time, the temperatures aren’t scorching but you will see plenty of sunshine and warmth. You will also be avoiding hurricane season and the rainy season.

During the warm, dry season mentioned above that you want to visit during, there are some time periods you want to avoid, however. Of course, if you can only stay a few days, try to stay mid-week as prices will be lower and you can avoid weekend crowds. Also, try to avoid the Spring Break rush of college students in the area.

While you can choose to rent a car, if you’d like, the expense really isn’t necessary and if you aren’t familiar with the area, it can be a bit hectic trying to get around in an unfamiliar city in an unfamiliar country via car.

If you want wheeled transportation, you can always take taxis, which are very popular, or if you are trying to sightsee, there are many moped rentals since they are widespread around hotels and especially around attractions.

However, the best way to get around Cozumel is still going to be on foot. You can take your time to look around, take in the many sights, sounds, and wonder food smells of the city and take as many pictures as you would like. So, be sure to bring good walking shoes and wear them often.

Whenever you are on vacation to a hot tourist spot in another country, you want to take certain safety precautions.

Always keep your head about you: this means partaking in adult beverages to have fun but not going overboard so that you can keep your wits, not showing off expensive cameras or flashy jewelry, and always having identification on you.

If you will be enjoying the snorkeling tours and other outdoor sports, it is a good idea to also invest in traveler’s health insurance just in case of accidental injury or if someone in your family or group gets sick.

You want to know that you can be seen by a local doctor or at a hospital and not end up with a medical bill for a simple visit.

Be sure to bring walking shoes as well as sandals for the beach. You also want to bring a beach bag that can get sand in it or is made of mesh so it won’t hold sand at all. Have beach clothes as well as everyday walking around clothes.

Most attractions, restaurants, small vendors, and more will take both pesos, which is the local currency in Cozumel, as well as the American dollar. However, if you pay in pesos, you will most likely be getting a better deal.

If you take money out at an ATM, you will be getting pesos anyway so there’s no need to change them over to dollars even though you may be more comfortable paying for things that way and will know more about how much you are paying for things.

The best bet is to download an easy-to-use app onto your smartphone that will allow you to quickly convert pesos to your currency of choice so you know exactly how much you are spending on things in a currency you are familiar with.

Try to avoid spending money on the piers as most of them are tourist traps. Because all of the cruise lines unload on the piers, most of those tourists spend a lot of money there and the locals know this so the prices are higher.

You’re better off spending money closer to downtown. However, when on your snorkeling tours, this might not be avoided so bring as much as you can with you, like your sunscreen, sunglasses, etc. Most of them will provide snacks and drinks or a way to purchase them.

Because this is a tourist spot, most locals know English, or at least enough to communicate with the tourists. However, it will really help if you can know at least a few phrases.

Knowing a few local phrases will help put you in the good graces, so to speak, with the locals you interact with, even if you are just buying a bottle of water.

This area is very conservative so you won’t find any nude beaches. Even untying the strings on the back of your bikini so you don’t have tan lines is frowned on. This is even if you are lying face down and tie them before getting back up. Make sure you are decent at all times.

It’s not really a custom but tourists shouldn’t drink the tap water. You can get very sick. Even use bottled water to brush your teeth.

Our snorkeling excursion in Cozumel starts daily in the morning at 10:00 am and in the afternoon at 2:00 pm and lasts 4 hours.

We emphasize small groups during our Cozumel snorkeling excursions. We go by boat to the beautiful coral reefs in the National Park of Cozumel. Our first stop is at Turtle Point , where a sighting of turtles is likely. Afterwards we snorkel over unique corals and swim with the current . Cozumel Snorkel Tour: Turtle Point

Turtle Point is a popular spot for sea turtles to feed . Especially the green turtle is spotted here. Sea grass grows on the shallow bottom, and here the turtles find enough food. In the shallow water we try for turtle sightings.

The shallow part at the Cozumel coral reef is especially good for snorkeling. At a depth of about 6-7 meters amazing coral formations are waiting for us and with a little luck we will find the big parrot fish or a sea turtle.

We let ourselves drift with the current and snorkel along the reef. 

Snorkeling at Cozumel El Cielo

In Spanish, El Cielo means “sky.” It is one of the most spectacular and beautiful spots on Cozumel , if not the entire Caribbean. The white sand shines in the turquoise blue water . Here we see several starfish scattered in the water.

Swim stop at Cozumel El Cielito

El Cielito is the shallow part of El Cielo and means “little sky” . The water here is only waist deep. Sometimes stingrays swim in front of us or hide in the sand. The water has the color of a swimming pool and the visibility is up to 30 meters. We are served a delicious snack of guacamole and fresh fruits . We enjoy a cool drink in the sun.

• Sun protection: It is not allowed anymore to apply sunscreen in the National Park to protect corals and water quality. Please use sunscreen BEFORE the beginning the tour. If possible, only use  biodegradable sunscreen  in your vacation.

The minimum age for this excursions is 6 years

Availability

The availability of our excursions can only be guaranteed after confirmation by us. If an excursion is not possible on your desired date, we will suggest another date or refund any payments already received.

Boats We work with different boats to guarantee the minimum number of participants. The excursion in always the same.

The Marine park organisation closes certain reefs at certain times of the year. This is to give a break to the ecosystem. This happens for example in August for the Colombia reef. We will then go to alternate reefs.

For a binding reservation we charge a deposit of 20% of the tour price. The remaining payment will be made in CASH on site. Please note that payment on site by credit card is not possible. If you would like to inquire about the tour without a binding reservation, please  contact us .

Customization of Excursions

Under special circumstances we adapt our tours to external conditions. We discuss this individually with our customers. Adjustments will be made, for example, if the weather changes at short notice. We also adapt excursions for cruisers to the berthing times of cruise ships.

Cancellation policy

• With the reservation we charge a deposit. We keep these as administration fees for “no-show” guests.
• We value small group sizes. Therefore, we use smaller boats for our excursions for a maximum of 13 people. These boats do not have a toilet on board!!! For those who prefer snorkeling tours in larger groups on bigger boats or catamarans, we will be happy to make an alternative offer.
• It can happen that our boat excursion on Cozumel has to be cancelled due to bad weather (strong wind and waves). Typical season for this is between November and March. This may be at the direction of the port captain or may be a safety decision by our captain. If the tour cannot be rescheduled to another day, we will of course refund any deposits made. Unfortunately, we cannot pay for any other costs incurred. However, we will gladly make every effort to provide substitute services. In addition, we do everything in our power to inform about such cancellations as early as possible.

• You cancel the excursion at least 24 hours before
• If you have to cancel the excursion for whatever reason, please inform us as soon as possible. We might be able to sell the excursion elsewhere and will refund the deposit.

• If your cruise ship does not dock in Cozumel on the day you booked, we will be happy to provide you with a voucher for a future visit or refund 50% of your deposit.

Are you just like me and hate using an actual snorkel?

These days they have snorkel masks that go over your whole face, not only does it make it easier to see when you are underwater.

They also help to ensure you won’t inhale water through your snorkel or have a weird piece of plastic in your mouth. They really are amazing : )

Now back to snorkeling in Cozumel.

Some resorts will have free rental gear for those staying in their hotels, but if you are like me and don’t want to be using the same snorkel strangers have used.

I would suggest buying some as you can pick it up cheap, like the snorkel masks I mentioned earlier. 

That way you have your own and don’t have to worry about using anyone else’s snorkel as well.

However, if you don’t want to carry one in your luggage, you can always rent one.

Just be sure to check in ahead of time with your hotel, to ensure they rent them. 

It ’ s good to come up with a plan ahead of time so you can decide on if you’ll rent or bring snorkel gear. 

You ’ ll also have the option to buy gear while in Cozumel from various shops or tour companies if you don ’ t want to borrow used gear.

Just be aware that it will be marked up for tourists and will most likely be of lower quality.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Cozumel

Cozumel is situated on the Mesoamerican reef which is the second-largest reef in the world so there are many different spots to choose from.

There are both off-shore snorkeling options where you can swim out from shore to reefs that aren ’ t very far from the coastline.

There are also, of course, large reefs further out in the ocean that you can access by boat.

Cozumel snorkeling tour companies will take you out to these reefs by boat.

Off-shore Snorkeling Options

Off-shore snorkeling is a very easy and hassle-free option.

You can pay to visit a beach club or park where you can snorkel right from the beach and have some of the  best snorkeling Cozumel has to offer.

You also can choose to snorkel from a public beach where you can swim out to a reef just off the beach.

Spend as much or as little time as you ’ d like swimming with the fish of the Caribbean Sea.

1. Chankanaab Park

This park is very popular because it ’ s only about 4 miles from the cruise port so many tourists visit this location, so it can get crowded.

The water is shallow with a mild current so it ’ s an especially great spot for beginners and families.

Just 0.2 miles from the shore, you can access the vibrant, colorful marine life of the reef.

Some of the sea animals include eels, morays, sea urchins, angelfish, snappers, among many others.

The most exciting part about this location is the underwater statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

There are also other activities in this park including swimming with dolphins and scuba diving but just note that there is a fee to get into this park. 

2. Villa Blanca Reef

This reef is located on the west coast of the island and not too far from the ferry port.

It ’ s a popular spot among tourists because it ’ s great for all levels of snorkelers and can be accessed from the beach.

It ’ s a shallow reef that only reaches up to 40 feet deep and also makes a great night snorkeling spot.

There can be strong currents and many boats in the area so it ’ s important to stick to the snorkeling guide provided.

There are many amazing sea animals to see in the concentrated area including sea sponges, squirrelfish, moray, eels, and gorgonians. 

3. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

This beach park is a bit further from the ferry port so it ’ s not quite as busy and a great place to snorkel from shore.

In general, Punta Sur is a beautiful natural place where you ’ ll find exotic birds and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

The Chunchacab Reef can be accessed about 0.3-0.5 miles offshore and is a great spot to explore.

The park has a $14 admission fee but besides snorkeling, there are restaurants, showers, and beach chairs to use within the park. 

4. Snorkel Options by Boat

Many tour companies on the island will take you by boat to explore larger reefs a bit further from shore.

Oftentimes, you can see a larger variety of marine life but tours can get costly and usually are long day trips.

Some tours will take you to different locations on the island to see diverse reefs and sea animals, others will take you to a single reef to spend a few hours.

Boat snorkeling tours are very practical and easy as you can jump on and off the boat to enjoy the experience rather than swimming a good distance to access a reef.

These boats normally take you to the best places to snorkel in Cozumel.

5. Palancar Reef

This reef is located on the southwestern part of the island. The visibility is very high which makes it arguably one of the best and most famous snorkeling spots on the island.

Many tour companies will take you by boat for roughly $45 to experience the abundance of marine life in the area.

At this reef, you ’ ll see features such as caves, ledges, and large reef drop-offs. Some of the animals to see here include sea turtles, butterflyfish, and eels. You could explore this reef in 1-2 hours.

6. Columbia Reef

This reef is just as famous and great as the nearby Palancar Reef on the south end of the island. It is best accessed by boat and many tours will take you there.

Marine life includes sharks and spotted eagle manta rays among diverse, colorful fish.

It ’ s a deep reef but the visibility is high. It ’ s also a great spot for scuba divers as well as snorkelers. This is probably some of the best snorkeling Cozumel has to offer. 

7. El Cielo

Another popular snorkel destination is El Cielo which means heaven in Spanish because the waters are a beautiful turquoise blue with a white, sandy floor.

It ’ s very shallow so the visibility is superb. You can find starfish, stingrays, and vibrant schools of fish. This spot is best to visit by boat, so you will want to book a tour. 

Some of the boat options include glass-bottom boats and speedboats out to this reef.

Once you arrive, the water at El Cielo is shallow so it’s a great spot for novice snorkelers and families to enjoy. This is by far one of the  best places to snorkel in Cozumel.

Tours That Include Snorkeling in Cozumel

Many tour companies will take you on a variety of adventures. If you ’ re looking for a snorkeling boat tour you’ll have many great options.

You can find companies that will take you on a variety of activities that include other adventures than just snorkeling.

Some companies will take you on a trip around the island and bring you to unique and private spots to snorkel.

Others might take you by foot, jeep, dune buggy, or scooter through the jungle or around the coast.

So it’s best to look for a tour that suits your needs. 

The main thing to note is that there are so many different options for exploring the island and finding the best snorkeling experience. 

Another option is to join a beach club or go to a park for the day.

There is an admission fee to visit one of these locations but you’ll gain access to a variety of activities.

If you pay for a tour you will most likely be provided snorkel equipment to either borrow or rent along with additional activities such as waterslides, kayaks, and paddle boats.

Some of these parks or clubs will include guided snorkel tours if you ’ re interested and others will have buoy lines that direct you where to snorkel along the coast.

A few great spots to check out include Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, Uvas Beach Club, and Money Bar Beach Club but there are so many others on the island.

Cozumel is one of the most beautiful and unique islands to visit in the world.

Its location on the Mesoamerican reef makes it one of the most sought-after snorkeling destinations.

Avid snorkelers should add Cozumel to their bucket list of destinations.

Whether you travel for a day trip or spend a few nights, you ’ ll be happy you made the trek to the small, yet serene island.

There is much to see, experience, and love about the place.

Everything you need to know about Snorkeling in Cozumel

Cozumel is a well-known island in the Caribbean Sea. This island is a popular cruise ship port and can be very touristy. If you are interested in scuba diving or snorkeling, Cozumel is a perfect place to visit. There are tons of scuba diving companies throughout the Island as well as snorkeling boat tours. Most of the island is undeveloped but near El Centro and the ferry port, it is bustling with tourists. Rent a scooter and explore the island!

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

From Playa del Carmen, we took a 45-minute ferry ride to Cozumel Island. There are two ferry companies that run between the two cities on opposite days. Make sure to check the schedule and know which ferry you are planning to take as the times vary depending on the day and ferry company. Purchase your tickets at the ticket stand right near the ferry port. You will have the option for a first-class or a general ticket. We purchased the general tickets which came to be $25USD/person for a round trip ferry. *Prices do vary depending on the time of year.

• Get to the ferry port at least an hour early! The ferry companies will oversell tickets.
• Be prepared if you are prone to seasickness. The ferry is large but it is a long and slow ride.
• There is a small coffee show on the Ultramar ferry.
• Save your money and purchase the general tickets instead of the first-class tickets.
• Be prepared to go through security.

Best Way to Get Around Cozumel

Rent a scooter.

I highly encourage renting a scooter for the day. Scooters are cheap to rent and there are many scooter rental shops near the ferry port. We rented this red scooter for $20/USD for the entire day. Marymar Rentals is a great company to work with, they are reasonable, friendly, and legit.

Car rental is a bit more expensive and requires additional insurance papers. Depending on how far you are going and how often you will be driving, renting a car could be a great idea. Marymar Rentals also offers cars and jeeps to rent at a great price.

Taxies are a popular form of transportation in Mexico. Once you get off the ferry and arrive on the island, you will find many taxies honking their horn calling for you to chose their taxi. Some drivers will give you a good deal depending on where you are going but some will overcharge you. Always try to bargain and ask for a better price. Taxies can get expensive if you are traveling long distances.

Snorkeling in Cozumel Must Haves

I highly suggest purchasing your snorkeling gear before you go. Renting snorkeling gear can be pricey if you are going multiple days during your vacation.

Where to go Snorkeling in Cozumel

Cozumel is home to some of the most gorgeous snorkeling and deep-sea diving in the world. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef also known as the Great Mayan Reef is the world’s second-largest barrier reef, right behind the Great Barrier Reef near Australia. The Mesoamerican Reef is located right in the middle of the Mexican Caribbean Sea making Cozumel a prime location for snorkeling and scuba diving. This large coral reef bed attracts an array of colorful marine life.

Sky Reef is one of my top places to go snorkeling in Cozumel. There is no minimum fee you need to pay to snorkel and enjoy their beach club. All you need to do is order something, it could be the cheapest thing on the menu. The staff is welcoming and very helpful. Sky Reef offers sports bundles if you need to rent snorkeling gear or would like to try kayaking or paddleboarding The chicken nachos are delicious!

Snorkeling at Sky Reef is easy, safe, and fun. There is a large area roped off that you snorkel in. I love that it is roped off because you do not have to worry about boats passing by. We spent the whole day here snorkeling and got to see a variety of marine life including a stingray, fish, barracuda, and coral structures. Tip: Swim all the way out to the rope to experience the deep sea with a large drop in the ocean wall.

If you are looking for clear bright blue waters with a white sand beach, El Cielo is the place to visit. This is a popular snorkeling area because it is known for spotting starfish and stingrays. There is also ample fish to see. Snorkeling is available right off the beach or you can take a boat out into the sea. You will need a guided tour to visit the blue waters of El Cielo. I recommend a Cozumel snorkeling tour for $60 per person, you will be able to experience three major snorkeling stops along the Mesoamerican Reef. *There is an additional $5 marine fee, not included in the tour price.

Buccanos Resort + Beach

Buccanos Resort and Beach is located on the north end of the island near the Westin Resort. A taxi to Buccanos will cost about $10 one-way from the main ferry port. I highly suggest just renting a scooter for the day. This is another great spot for beginner snorkelers because the water is slow and easy to swim in. There is a $20/adult beach club entrance fee that provides you access to the lounge chairs, palapas, and snorkeling gear. The resort offers a free snorkeling guide that will follow you, taking videos and pictures. The catch is that the pictures and videos taken are available for purchase only. The restaurant offers amazing food and drinks.

Free Snorkeling in Cozumel- Sunset Beach Cozumel

Sunset Beach is one of the few beaches that does not have a cover charge. At Sunset Beach you can snorkel along Cozumel’s coast for FREE! This beach is located about 3/4 miles from the ferry port and is a popular spot for tourists on a cruise. Right next to the snorkeling area is a restaurant and gear shop with snorkeling gear for rent.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is one of my favorite places because it offers so many water activities. One of the highlights of this resort is the inflatable water park. There are trampolines, slides, and climbing structures to play on. I encourage you to purchase the Fun Pass – $64USD/adult which includes access to the water park, kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear. All-Inclusive – Nachi Cocom Cozumel Beach Club

Nachi’s all-inclusive package is $39USD/adult and includes an open bar, 4-course lunch, and beach club amenities. A taxi to El Cielo will cost about $15USD one-way from the main ferry port, I highly suggest just renting a scooter for the day. This is a great deal for a full day of snorkeling and relaxing on the beach. The food is exceptional and it is an all-you-drink open bar. The resort also offers additional activities like boat rides, massages, and photo sessions (for an additional fee).

Life vests are obligatory while snorkeling.

Where is the Paradise Reef located?

As we already said, Paradise Reef (or Paraiso Reef as locals call it) is in the western part of the island.

It’s situated very close to the largest city in Cozumel – San Miguel, which is about 10 minutes drive from the reef.

Paradise Reef is part of the system of reefs that are used by many snorkelers and divers in Cozumel.

Some other famous beaches located in this area are Villa Blanca which is north of Paradise Reef, as well as Tormentos and Yucab Reef.

Why is Cozumel’s Paradise Reef one of the best places for snorkeling?

It seems that there is more than one good reason why this reef is famous among Cozumel travelers and cruisers. First of all, this is a relatively shallow reef. As we have mentioned before, this reef has two separate areas where snorkelers can enjoy in their snorkeling activities.

Generally speaking, this is a shallow reef which is perfect for novice snorkelers. The depth is between 20 and 50 feet. The more superficial part is in the north. Those who are more experienced can try the deeper waters in Paradise South close to the International Pier.

But, the versatility of Paradise Reef is not the only thing that makes this place unique. The other one is the fact that you can enjoy a wide array of animals and plants that naturally occur in this place.

From endemic species to well-known marine animals, you will enjoy lush nature in Paradise Reef. Feeding the fish under the guidance of an instructor is possible. The small island of Cozumel off the east coast of Yucatan is known as an underwater heaven with good reason. The clear, marine life-rich waters attract visitors from all over the world to discover the place that even the famous oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau mentioned as one of the best places to dive. If you decide to come and explore this destination, here we tell you what the best places are for snorkeling in Cozumel where turtles, stingrays, and sea stars are awaiting you.

Those who arrive to spend a longer vacation on the island often ask the question ‘Where to snorkel in Cozumel from the shore’ since this is the most convenient way of exploring the undersea world, so here we look at the best spots that are worth visiting!

Snorkeling from the shore is generally free at public beaches, but those places that are maintained by a beach club or restaurant might ask you to purchase snacks or drinks. At private beaches that belong to hotels, it is required to pay an entrance fee but that usually includes using the facilities too.

The Palancar Reef is a superb shallow reef that is part of the Arrecifes de Cozumel Marine Park . With vibrant sea life, and fantastic clarity, it is often mentioned as the best shore snorkeling in Cozumel. Most boat snorkeling tours include Palancar in their itinerary, but snorkelers can choose to access it from the beach too.

The reef system features 5 sites. Snorkelers can swim among tropical fish, rays, turtles, nurse sharks, and sea stars in the so-called Garden and Shallows. Those who want to go diving too will certainly enjoy the Deep, Caves, and Horseshoe sites’ coral formations with massive gorgonians, sponges, and of course a wide variety of sea creatures (lobster, barracudas, moray eels etc…)

Tip: the nearby Iberostar Hotel is the best resort in Cozumel with snorkeling. It has a small reef right off the shore and is in close proximity to other beaches where the reef starts close to the shore.

One of the most popular Cozumel spots since it lies only about 4 miles south of the cruise port. The current is mild, water is shallow so this is an excellent place for novice snorkelers and for families with kids.

You can get into the water easily through stair ladders and start discovering the Caribbean Sea’s underwater life. The best part of the reef is about 0.2 mile/300 m from the shore and this is where the marine life is the most vibrant. You will see some of the most colorful tropical fish species like angelfish, snappers, anemonefish besides other creatures such as morays, eels, and sea urchins.

The biggest attraction of the Chankanaab Park is the underwater statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ, make sure to take a waterproof camera with you since there is no scuba gear needed to get a picture with these bronze sculptures!

Note: There is an entrance fee, of approx. 20-25 USD which doesn’t include equipment rental so bring own snorkel gear !

If you will be staying near San Miguel, the Villa Blanca Reef (the area between the ferry pier and the Grand Park Royal Resort) is a must-visit. The reef is the liveliest in front of the Villablanca Garden Hotel , this is where its name comes.

The shallow reef is teeming with life: soft and hard coral outcrops, sea fans, and basket sponges give a home to various marine species especially juvenile fish.

It is an advanced Cozumel snorkel spot due to the boat traffic and sometimes strong current, therefore make sure to have powerful snorkeling fins and carry a high-visibility swim buoy for your own safety.

Punta Sur is not only one of the places to snorkel from the shore in Cozumel, but it is a nice spot to enjoy nature, amazing view and observe herons and flamingos. Moreover, it is less popular than the beaches near the cruise port so I can say this is one of my favorite locations on the island, however a rental car (or taxi) is needed to get to this park because it is on the southern tip of the island.

Don’t be surprised if you find nothing but sand near the shore within the designated swimming are; the reef is about 0.3-0.5 mile/500-800 m near the buoy line. People who don’t swim beyond the buoys say that Punta Sur is not a good place for snorkeling in Cozumel, don’t believe them and check it out for yourself!

It is true that the best snorkel area is a long way out, but if you are strong swimmer and make it to the reef you will be rewarded with the amazing views of healthy coral formations and nice purple sea fans. Expect to see stingrays, turtles and lobsters besides the common tropical fish.

Top Snorkeling Spots in Cozumel by Boat

Besides the superb shore snorkeling spots, Cozumel is proud to feature excellent boat-accessible coral reefs. Should you wish to spend a great day sailing the waves and discovering some of the finest underwater life of the Caribbean, check out below what places we recommend to visit by boat when on Cozumel!

Note: Most snorkel tours depart from the main dock and coast approx. 30-50 USD per person. The best and most budget-friendly option is choosing a tour that includes 2-3 stops so that you can visit all the best places. There are many operators that do El Cielo, Columbia and Palancar in one day.

The El Cielo Reef lies about 1 mile/1.6 km from the shore and it is considered the best snorkel spot in Cozumel for beginners and kids thanks to its rich marine life and shallow, calm waters.

The crystal blue turquoise water (which is only 2-3 ft/0.5-1m deep) with powdery white-sandy bottom make ideal conditions to take great photos of the starfish that are literally everywhere around this shallow sandbar area. This spot is similar to the Palancar Gardens but with clearer water and more starfish!

A bit further away from the sea star spot where the water gets a bit deeper there is a high chance to find stingrays that come to feed and rest on the sandy bottom.

Columbia Reef is a top-rated Cozumel snorkeling and diving spot that lies not so far from Palancar Reef. Since it is relatively far from the shore, therefore it is reachable only by boat.

This shallower part (Columbia Shallows) offers enormous coral structures to see in about 30 ft/10m of water wits eagle rays, turtles, and of course schools of fish. Don’t be afraid from the depths, since the visibility is excellent here so you will be able to see the reef clearly.

There is also a vertical wall here at the end of the shallow reef (Columbia Deep is the name of it) which is a great diving spot.

Cozumel is a paradise island with a wonderful coastline, but to locate the best snorkeling beaches, it is good to learn a bit about the island’s geographical features. The east and northern sides don’t have good snorkeling due to the often rough waters and strong undersea currents.

The best spots for snorkeling in Cozumel can be found on the west and south-west, wind and wave-protected side of the island. The snorkeling beaches here have usually shallow and calm water with ideal conditions for beginners and kids too.

At sandy beaches, the water can get murky so for the best experience, it is better to look for rocky spots where the visibility is excellent. Moreover, there are some superb boat-accessible reefs that are also worth visiting, also on the western and south-western sides.

The weather is never really bad in Mexico, but if your main priority is to go snorkeling in Cozumel, the best is if you plan your trip between March and June. This period of the year has calm and warm weather when the average daytime temperatures are 87-90F/30-32C. It is still OK to come between July and October, but this is the hurricane season so you should follow the weather updates.

Mexico and Cozumel are excellent winter beach holiday destinations too if you wish to escape the freezing weather, but from end of November till mid-March, the daytime temperatures remain around 71-77F/22-25 C, moreover cloudiness, wind and some rain can occur.

The sea is warm enough for swimming and discovering Cozumel snorkeling spots year-round. The water temperature ranges between 79-82F/26-28C and the visibility is amazing (can reach 100ft/30m).

The island of Cozumel lies about 20 kilometers off the coast of Playa del Carmen. It is not connected to the mainland, so you must hop on a ferry to get to Cozumel. Ferries leave from the Playa del Carmen ferry port every hour between 6 am and 11 pm.

Two companies are operating the route and one-way ticket costs circa 10$. The crossing time is about 40 minutes.

It is also possible to get to Cozumel by plane as it has a small, international airport with connecting flights from Mexico’s major airports.

Traveling in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy as various transportation options are available, so you should take advantage of a Cozumel snorkeling trip even if you are not staying in Playa del Carmen.

For example, if the starting point of your vacation is Cancun, getting from Cancun to Cozumel takes about 2 hours. It is more or less the same if you come from Tulum.

Despite being a small island, Cozumel offers various accommodation options for all types of travelers. What is the best place to stay in Cozumel mainly depends on what type of accommodation you are looking for and what activities you want to do, but if your main priority is snorkeling, I share some good options:

With its beautiful surroundings, high service level, fantastic food options, and lots of activities all day to keep you busy, it is recommended for all types of travelers, especially those who like active vacations. The on-site dive shop can help you arrange snorkeling trips if you want to explore the island’s underwater attractions in a comfortable way!

Cozumel snorkeling on your own — shore trips.

Cozumel snorkeling from shore allows YOU to set the pace. You don’t need to fork out the dough for a boat trip tour to enjoy great snorkeling on Cozumel. In fact, the typical $40/person snorkeling boat tour will likely take you to the very same spot you could reach just as easily from shore.

Shore Snorkeling on the North End of the Island: Coral Princess, Club Cozumel Caribe, Playa Azul, Cozumeleño, etc

The North End of the island is recommended snorkeling only for strong swimmers with advanced skills. This is because the currents can be strong here as well as unpredictable.

We took a check out dip in front of the Coral Princess, where we’d heard rumors that the snorkeling was good. Be aware, the snorkeling here has a deep water entry. We estimated the current close into shore to be around 2 KNOTS 1 mile per hour. However, when we swam south against the current and around a little point we found ourselves caught between two currents that made it difficult to move either north or south. So we pushed out to sea 30 yards or so and caught yet another current coming back to the Coral Princess that was at least 2-3 KNOTS miles per hour. Our dip at the Coral Princess led us to decide not to recommend this area for your average snorkeler — and most certainly not for children.

Our favorite shore snorkel on the North end is Club Cozumel Caribe. It is a very easy drift snorkel with lots of fish and sea life for viewing. The entry is from a nice platform, but the exit is a very nice shoreline. Plus the facilities are very nice for your breakfast, lunch, or afternoon snack. You will be charged an entrance fee. But keep your receipt and they will deduct it from your tab at the end of the day!

Snorkelers on the north end of the island should also be aware that the currents here will always be pushing out into the channel towards Cancun –not towards land as they do on the south end of Cozumel.

Southern Shore Snorkeling

There’s good snorkeling from The Barracuda Hotel & Blue Angel as you head south from town. Club Cozumel Caribe, Turquesa and Monima as you head north from town.

Currents are a factor on the south end of the island as well. But they will tend to be much gentler than anywhere else on the island. Unlike on the north end, where forces tend to pull you out to sea, on the south coast of Cozumel you’ll be pushed back towards the beach.

For this reason, this whole corridor is recommended for beginning through intermediate snorkelers. But any level of skill will enjoy these trips.

Here are some easy put-in spots for checking out the underwater scenery south of town:

This stretch of coastline beginning just a little south of the lighthouse and the pretty little beach area there called Playa Caletita and ending at The Snorkel Center is a good place to check out. Where you put in here will depend on the direction of the current. Once you’ve figured this out and decided whether to start at the south end and float north or vice versa, you can do the snorkel then hop out and walk back to your starting point down the pretty, ocean side promenade. Playa Caletita can’t be missed, about ½ mile south of Hotel Cozumel. When you see the lighthouse, you’re almost to the parking lot.

The snorkeling isn’t good right at the Caletita beach. But there’s a nice little sandy put in right next to the lighthouse. So if the current is going south, you can put in here, and drift the .6/10 of a mile down to the Sunsets put in (see below). If you’re pooped out, you can get out right here and walk back along the sidewalk to where you started. Or continue on another 2/10 miles and get out at the Snorkel Center (see below.)

Sunsets put in: approximately 6/10 miles south of Playa Caletita and the lighthouse, you’ll see an open air restaurant on the right. You’ll see a wooden rail and stone stairs that lead you down to another put in.

If the current is going north, you can take it up to Playa Caletita and exit there. If south, get out at the nearby Snorkel Center if the current is stronger that day than you feel like dealing with.

 Snorkel Center Put In

You’ll see a large “sky scraper” on your left as you continue south on the main road. Just a little beyond this and on the ocean side of the road is The Snorkel Center. (If you go under an overhead footbridge, you know you’ve gone a block too far.) Little stone steps beside the Snorkel Center lead down to an easy put in. Snorkel this area after 9 AM or before noon when the dive and snorkel boats will be out and away. What you’ll find: coral heads, fan coral, plenty of fish.

The Money Bar Beach Club

Taxis drop offs and pick ups are very easy from this well-known snorkeling spot once known as Dzul Ha. If you’re driving yourself, head south on the main road. About a half mile beyond all the congestion and the new traffic light they put in a few months back (only one south of town) you’ll see overhead roadway signs and a road that veers off to the right at a 35 degree angle. This is the old beach road. Follow this for about a mile until you hit it.

This sprawling, funky little club on the beach is an excellent base for a couple hours of snorkeling.

In fact, quite a few cruise ship-arranged snorkel tours take you out from the Money Bar dock. You’ll see lemming schools of them bobbing around out there and can feel very smug about getting the same views on your own, in peaceful solitude and for a fraction of the price.

Fiesta Americana

How to Get There: Continue down the old beach road from The Money Bar about ½ mile and you’ll see the hotel across the road from the beach with a restaurant on the beach.

What you’ll find– There’s is still beautiful snorkeling in front of this hotel. But the particularly interesting marine and plant life will be found to the south of the hotel

Fiesta Americana has a easy entrance from the big staircase. Take this staircase to head out to the buoys (but no further). Then drift south with the current and get out before the pier. If you want to drift further south than the pier, the strong current will take you almost to the entrance of Chankanaab. (See Old Chankanaab Road Next.) So if you pass the pier, you will have to angle into shore and walk back.

Just park your car or jump out of the taxi and walk on through to the beach area. If you plan to stay for awhile and use one of the shaded tables, just order something if a waiter comes around. At non-busy times of the year it’s unlikely a waiter will come by. If you want something to drink, you can go find one.

The Old Chankanaab Road

How to Get here: Approximately 3/10 miles past Fiesta American watch for a Y intersection approximately 200 yards before the entrance to Chankanaab National Park. This was the old entrance to the famous park which is now further south on the main road. No chairs under palapas here but lots of low trees offer shade close to the water and there’s easy, partially sandy put ins for 50 yards.

How to Get There–One of the don’t miss attractions of the island, any taxi will take you here. Or if you’re in a car, just drive south out of town on either the new road or the old ocean-side one and follow the signs to Chankanaab (CHAHN-kah-knob).

This lovely park with its peacefully shady gardens and long, lovely stretch of man-made beach is a don’t miss experience for any visitor to Cozumel.

And if you’ve never snorkeled before, it’s a good place to rent gear and practice your moves. You will see the occasional parrot fish, a school of sergeant majors perhaps but no coral, sea fans, octopus, lobster, etc. etc.

Be sure not to miss the underwater statues: Chaak Mool, the Rain God, the Virgin and The Christ. Land-side be sure to check out the beautiful tropical gardens and the “living museum” where you can see how the Mayans lived and even try homemade tortillas and salsa. Also don’t miss the interesting Palapa Musuem next to the freshwater lagoon with its exhibits of Cozumel’s flora and fauna.

Corona Beach Club

How to Get There: Continue on the old beach road going south from Chankanaab for approximately 9/10 mile. Another funky little beach club where they have shaded tables down by the water and an easy,

No-booties necessary as they have a track through the sand into the water right in front of the club. Clean bathrooms, outdoor shower. High season this year they were charging a cover charge of $2/person in addition to anything you order in the way of drinks or food. But it’s worth the price of admission if you love snorkeling

This spot has good close to shore snorkeling and for strong swimming free divers, some excellent 10-20 ft walls 50 yards or so out from the beach.

Sky Reef Club

A newer beach club that has decent snorkeling and a nice restaurant. They also have live salsa music here on Sunday afternoons.

East Coast “Wild Side”

We don’t call this the “wild side” of the island for nothing. It’s beautiful over there where Cozumel’s eastern coast faces the open Caribbean and Cuba. But it’s also dangerous with very strong and unpredictable undertows that you can’t see from the surface but that are often found in 3 to 15 ft of water here. Don’t snorkel here because there’s nothing to see anyhow. And Extreme Care should be taken with regular swimming as well.
