February brings in the dry season, characterized by steady offshore winds, generated by Lake Nicaragua, that groom the waves to perfection and deliver consistent barrels.

I recently took a February surf trip to Nicaragua to Popoyo, one of the best surf spots in Nicaragua .. It was a little small while we were there, and I think it’s the PERFECT February surf destination for beginner surfers.

Where to Surf in February for Beginners: 6 Best Destinations!

Planning a surf trip is tricky with so many places to choose from, especially for beginners.

However, not all surf destinations are created equal: some have perfect set ups for learner surfers with welcoming surf schools while others tend to the more hardcore, big wave and desolate spots, catering only for advanced riders.

With this in mind, below is a list of the best surf spots in the month of February for beginners, based on my own experiences of many of the destinations as well as from seeing my wife learn to surf over the last few years.

I’ve put together a list for every  continent to mean that somewhere on this list will be near enough for you to get to for your learn-to-surf fix!

Let’s get to it!

Florida: Atlantic Coast

Florida is not often at the top of every surfer’s list because it doesn’t get huge waves but, for that very reason, it is an ideal place to learn to surf!

Since it gets most waves from November to April, February is an ideal time to learn to surf in Florida.

Another advantage of Florida over many other surf destinations in the continental USA is that it has warm water year-round, meaning wetsuits are an optional extr a, even in the month of February.

This makes it an ideal ‘ winter surf destination’ for northern hemisphere surfers and learners alike.

Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach both have a range of surf schools to choose from as well as catering really well for tourists.

Another nice point about Florida in February is that it is much less humid than the summer months. Having been to Florida when I was a kid in July, I remember it seeming like I could barely breathe with the intense humidity and heat, so going in February means you’ll be avoiding that.

One downside to learning to surf in Florida is that there are spells without waves, but learning to surf only needs really small waves, so don’t let that put you off.

Australia: Byron Bay, NSW

Australia has long been known as a surf destination but there are some spots in Australia that make learning to surf an absolute joy.

Having spent close to two months surfing and traveling up and down Australia’s east coast back in 2003, I can seriously vouch for Byron Bay as a winter surf holiday destination.

I had some of the best surfs of my life there as an intermediate surfer, while friends who were learning absolutely love it, too.

There is a huge range of surf options to choose from, making it perfect if one of your group is more advanced while the others want to learn.

It also has consistent waves and warm water, making it even more enticing for the learn-to-surf crowd.

On top of the above, the chilled out town of Byron Bay has a very relaxed feel with lots of travelers, backpackers and nights out on offer.

This can be to its detriment and means Byron Bay is probably not the best family surf vacation . Instead, try Noosa Heads to the north in Queensland if looking for a family learn-to-surf spot in February.

Bali, Indonesia

From having lived for close to 3 years in Bali, I can say that you won’t be disappointed if you go there to learn to surf in February.

One thing that I found a little frustrating was how many surf guides say that Bali ‘ doesn’t get many waves’ during the rainy season from Novermber-March .

I can tell you that that is a myth .

Bali gets plenty of surf year-round and I only had perhaps 1 day a year where it was too small to be able to surf for every year I was there. The problem is that the waves are so big and perfect during the dry seasons that people dismiss the rainy season, yet that’s really doing Bali a disservice since a bad day’s surf in Bali is like a good day in most other surf spots on the planet!

It’s also the low season for tourists, meaning that you can have your pick of the accommodation at reduced rates.

Bali is also cheap , meaning that you can live well and still have money left over. It has lots of night spots and venues to eat out so you can do just about anything you’d like when you’re out of the water, as well as the fantastic Balinese culture and many places to visit inland.

The only downsides to learning to surf in Bali in February are humidity and high temperatures. Although the water is extremely warm, it can sometimes feel so warm that it doesn’t refresh you, which sounds strange until you experience it!

It is also rainy season in Bali in February, so expect some tropical downpours but, again, these weren’t nearly as bad as I’d thought from what I read before going there.

Rainy season yes, but low season for surf tourists, so mellower and still tons of waves, as you can see from the photo of me below, taken during the “ bad ” season for surf in Bali!

Costa Rica: Pacific Coast

There’s a saying in Costa Rica that you may have heard: pura vida. Literally, ‘pure life’, and if you go there, you’ll no doubt understand why. 

Tropical climate with endless coastline and surf aplenty makes Costa Rica a fantastic location for learning to surf.

The weather in February is a very warm but pleasant tropical climate, with the water also being warm making for a very mellow surf experience.

There are surf camps aplenty to choose from which cater for your every need, so that means staying right by the beach with all surfboard hire taken care of if you want to travel light.

In addition to the great climate and warm water, there are lots of great learner surf spots to choose from, each catering to beginners.

Again, surf guides say that the best time to visit might be other months of the year but for learning to surf, February is once again an ideal time as the smaller waves will work perfectly for your needs.

In terms of drawbacks, being in Costa Rica does come with certain levels of risk, making it unsafe to walk the streets in certain areas after dark, although you will be fine in your accommodation and the immediate surrounding area.

Visiting surfers should also remain vigilant when surfing near river mouths since saltwater crocodiles have attacked surfers in the past, although incidents have almost always been when surfers paddled across a river mouth to get to a spot, mainly around Tamarindo.

Europe: Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are often referred to by surfers as the ‘Hawaii of Europe’, and for good reason: weather and waves abound on these volcanic islands.

The sub-tropical climate means that, although not as hot year-round as Hawaii, they are certainly pleasantly mild through the Northern Hemisphere winter and have long summers with high temperatures.

They also have plenty of waves year-round, with spots on the south coast of Gran Canaria like Playa del Ingles offering some of the best options for learning to surf.

Again, there are so many places to choose from that it’s hard to go wrong but you might like to check out my YouTube video below for some tips on choosing the right surf school for you as it’s important to find the right one!

The only downside to surfing in the Canary Islands is that there are many days when it can get windy, so either look for spots that have good sheltered options nearby or plan to do something else, which isn’t an issue since there are so many places to explore and visit.

South Africa: Durban Area

Durban, South Africa is a great winter surfing option for those in Europe given the relatively cheap flights and the lack of a major time difference meaning almost no jet lag.

Durban has plenty of spots for beginners and some great surf schools to help you along the way.

The water and weather is warm in February, with no wetsuits needed here either, with water temperatures at around 73°F (23°C) .

Durban also has lots of nightlife options as well as fantastic cultural and wildlife day-trip opportunities in the surrounding areas.

The weak local currency makes for an affordable surf trip for visitors , allowing you to eat out for a fraction of the cost in many other Northern Hemisphere countries.

In terms of drawbacks, South Africa does have a few in terms of safety at night and also sharks but, again, these are well-known factors and following local advice and guidance on both will mean that your chances of having any issues are small . 

Don’t forget – learner surfers will rarely go far out of their depth, so shark attacks, which are already an extremely rare event, become even less likely.

Typically when we read about the world’s best surfing spots we find ourselves being directed towards the West Coast of the United States of America, to Australia, or to Bali on Java in Indonesia, but the reality is that there are many amazing spots for surfing in Europe.

That’s why we have created this guide to amazing surf spots in Europe.

From the United Kingdom to Spain, France, and Portugal, the surf in Western Europe can be pretty spectacular when it wants to be!

Traveling through Europe on the hunt for the best surfing spots is a great way to spend your  holiday in Europe  and you may find yourself never wanting to come home. Some of the places might be kind of pricey, but they’re definitely worth the money, so no excuses here!

The weather in Europe is unpredictable at the best of times but if you get a good sunny day you could easily be in Bali or on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, for the waters are oh so very blue, clear and, believe it or not, even warm too!

If you are good enough, you may find yourself invited to come and teach at one of the many surf schools along the coasts of Spain, France, and Portugal. This is a great way to travel around Europe , see the world, and teach what you are passionate about!

CAPARICA, Portugal

• WHEN: ALL YEAR AROUND

Lisbon is not only the capital of Portugal but is also one of the most popular surfing destinations in Europe. It is not difficult to see why when waves are constant all year round. There are many types of waves offered in Lisbon including beach breaks, point breaks, and reef breaks.

Caparica , or as the locals call it, Costa da Caparica is a long beach with numerous jetties. It goes from the south of Lisbon to the Tejo River and can be accessed by a twenty-minute drive across the bay. It has a great offshore wind when winds from the East come through.

There are surf options all along the thirty kilometers of Caparica. The best waves can be found in the north where there are sand bars and jetties.

PENICHE, Portugal

• WHEN:  The main season for surfing in Peniche runs from September through to October.

Peniche in Portugal has for many years been one of the most popular surfing destinations in Europe, and it’s not hard to see why.

Peniche is very easy to access thanks to budget airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair that fly to many destinations within Europe for a very reasonable price. If you want to bring your own board, though, you’ll find yourself forking out a small fortune as budget airlines are famed for their stinging baggage prices.

Nevertheless, there are over 200 different surf schools in Peniche from which to learn the ropes before you head out onto the water.

SAGRES, Portugal

• WHEN: The season is all year long but winter can deliver some pretty awesome uncrowded days.

In Sagres, the many empty beaches and amazing landscapes won’t let you down. The waves are suitable for surfers of all levels so just find a spot that suits you best.

The locals are not the friendliest but if you respect their culture and mind your own business you won’t have any problems. You should definitely visit—Sagres won’t leave you disappointed.

ERICEIRA, Portugal

• WHEN : for BEGINNERS between May and September, for intermediate and professional the rest of the year.

You can find this fisherman’s village north of Lisbon (only 45 minutes’ drive), and apart from fishing, you can find some amazing surfing conditions. There are various surfing spots to choose from, such as Coxos, Foz do Lizardo, Pedra Branca, etc. 

Surfing conditions are great for all types of surfers and all skill levels. The beaches are not as crowded as in other parts of Portugal, but you’ll probably want to hit the waves in the off-season.

Ericeira is a lovely town to hang out in, with some delicious seafood restaurants and some hip bars. If you need a quick getaway from the city, you can reach the lovely historical town Mafra in just 15 minutes.

There are few surf houses and hostels in the city, so you can easily go on a solo trip as well. You will make friends quickly in this town.

Praia do Norte, Nazaré Portugal

• WHEN: The best time to surf here is between November and February.  
• LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED 

The large wave season lasts from November through February. The Big Wave Challenge in the legendary Praia do Norte has captured the attention of the globe since 2011, and Nazaré has become a world-famous surf destination .

Praia do Norte is an unsupervised beach located to the north of the towering Nazaré Promontory (Promontório da Nazaré), sometimes known as “Stio”. It has the feel of a natural beach, with dunes that have preserved the indigenous vegetation.

The harsh sea is perilous for swimming, but surfers who discover magnificent waves here love it. In November 2011, Hawaiian Garrett McNamara rode a 30m high wave that was nominated for “Biggest wave” by the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.

LOFOTEN, Norway

• Beginner/intermediate: April – Sept. 
• Intermediate/advanced: Sept – April.

Lofoten, Norway, is known for having the best waves in the country.

Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and surfing all take place at this beautiful Nordic archipelago where the water offers all ages and any level of experience exciting activities.

Although the climate is cold, quality, thick wetsuits with hoods, neoprene gloves and boots will keep surfers warm as they enjoy what may be the most beautiful cold water surf location in the world.

Added to the enjoyment of the delightful waves, surfers can view and explore stunning fjords, breathtaking and picturesque landscapes and stunning scenery, not to mention the Northern Lights.

While there are ridable waves throughout the year, the best time to surf at Lofoten is between November and March. Lofoten is one location to experience inside a hooded wetsuit that is of the thickest weight with neoprene gloves and boots.

At Lofoten, there is whale watching, bird watching, the Northern Lights and beautiful birds to see, as well as thematic photo trips along with the tremendous surfing experiences.

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain

• WHEN:   The surf in San Sebastian is best in the winter months of November and December . The temperatures sit around twenty degrees, so it’s not too cold to cope!

When we think of Spain we think of flamenco and bull-fighting, not necessarily surfing but rest assured that Spain is home to some of the best surfing locations in the world, not just in Europe and San Sebastian is no exception.  

The best time of the year for surfing in San Sebastian is in the winter months. The water is not as cold as in Cornwall, England, but it is still pretty chilly.

San Sebastian itself is nothing particularly special; it’s quite built up with tourist resorts, but that’s not what we’re about. We are about the surf, right?

MUNDAKA, Spain

WHEN:   The best times to head to Mundaka for surfing are March and April and September and October .

Accessible from the city of Bilbao, Mundaka is one of the best surf spots in Spain . The surf is best in autumn and in spring, and the tepid waters are a joy to be in. The beaches around Mundaka are perfectly clean, with soft, creamy sand.

After a long day out on the water, hang out in one of the many beachside bars and cafes and enjoy a freshly caught fish dinner washed down with some classic Spanish sangria.

PLAYA DE RODILLES, Spain

• WHEN: The best time to surf here is between November and April. The place is loved by locals and can get very crowded.

Playa de Rodiles is located in the north of Spain in the Asturias region. It’s a beautiful surfing spot surrounded by some very steep cliffs. The scenery, Spanish culture, and Asturias region are very lovely and you’re gonna have a wonderful time on your surf trip!

First of all, it’s important to point out that this spot is not for beginners or anybody who is still learning how to surf. Playa de Rodiles is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers because of the strong rips and heavy waves. The waves reach three meters and it’s a lot of fun.

WATERGATE BAY, England

• WHEN: That said, the best surf at Watergate Bay rises in the autumnal months of September and October.

Watergate Bay, like Sennen Cove, can be found in the county of Cornwall in southwest England. Watergate Bay is far more popular with holiday-makers and tourists than Sennen Cove and, as such, you will find yourself battling for space in the surf during the summer high season.

Watergate Bay and Sennen Cove are a short drive from each other so if you are heading to Cornwall be sure to check out both spots and compare notes!

SENNEN COVE, England

• WHEN: The best surf season for pros at Sennen Cove peaks between September and October.

Sennen Cove is one of the United Kingdom’s best-kept secrets when it comes to surfing in Europe. Sennen Cove can be found nestled away in the most southerly county of England, Cornwall. Surfing in the Atlantic Ocean can be bitterly cold at times so make sure that you bring your full suit with you!

Sennen Cove offers a few good surf schools for those who want to learn how to surf or brush up on their skills. The surf at Sennen Cove is good for beginners in the summer—if you can deal with the busy beach, that is.

BIARRITZ, France

• for BEGINNERS: Summer months
• for INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCE: October through to December

Again, when we think of France we think of fine wines and Parisian cafes, but Biarritz confidently makes the grade as one of the top ten amazing surf spots in Europe.

Like with most places in Europe, during the summer months of June, July and August you will have to battle with the crowds for some half-decent surf, but the best time to surf in Biarritz is in the winter months of October through to December.

For those looking to learn how to surf in a great location with easy waves,  Biarritz is the place to go in the summer!

PORT BLANC, France

Port Blanc, part of the Quiberon peninsula in France, is a great spot for surfing in Europe as there are constant waves. The beaches are very crowded, however. Most waves are three to four feet high. There is a stream that comes off of the cliffs surrounding the water that will assist in paddling out.

Port Blanc has powerful and hollow waves. Waves can get up to eight feet despite the average mentioned previously.

The waves are powerful, so this is a more professional location for professional surfers. The waters can get crazy from the strength of the waves, the wind and the number of people. It’s a beautiful spot to take a board out and catch some air.

LACANAU, France

• W HEN:   The top months for surfing in Lacanau are January and December when the rideable waves are in excess of 70% consistently.
• LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

Sticking with France, our list of amazing surf spots now takes us to wonderful Lacanau, tucked away in the southwest of France on the Atlantic coast.

The small town of Lacanau has a typically French feel about it and it’s a great place to hang out for the summer if you want a relaxed and hassle-free existence in Europe. Not as popular as other French beach resorts, Lacanau is a hidden gem of this Western European nation.

Lacanau has some wonderful beaches, too with some great sand dunes to run down too if you fancy releasing your inner child!

HOSSEGOR, France

• WHEN:   October, November, and December are the months when the surf at Hossegor peak.
• LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED

Hossegor is arguably the best surfing spot in France and one of best in Europe. Hugely popular with local boarders and international travelers, Hossegor is a must-visit!

If you choose to head to Hossegor, then you are in luck: you can kill two birds with one stone and ride the waves at Biarritz too, for it is just a short 43-kilometer drive away. Like with Sennen Cove and Watergate Bay, remember to keep notes to pass on to your fellow surfers.

KLITM Ø LLER, Denmark

• WHEN:  WINTER – November to March

Known as “Cold Hawaii,” Klitmøller is more of a windsurfing town than a surfing area. Still, when the winds subside, some waves beckon the surfer because they peel nicely and offer him or her a surfing experience that should be far from ordinary.

Of course, Danish people are more acclimated to cold weather than some Americans or English who might be on tour. Still, a hefty wet suit will usually substitute for this difference in acclimation.

The best time of the year to surf at Klitmøller is during the winter, starting in November and ending in March. During these colder months, the North Sea has its best swells and is more consistent with its waves than in the summer months. In this respect, the sea provides the surfers the opportunities to enjoy themselves as they will have a good idea of what to expect better.

Also, since the waves flow steadily, any traveler to Klitmøller will have no disappointments regarding opportunities to surf. There is no crowding on the beach, although Klitmøller has become more attractive because of the efforts of Ramus Johnsen and other surfers who integrated surfing in the community.

THE BUBBLE, Canary Islands

• WHEN: The best surf at The Bubble spans a few months in length, from November through to February.

Many people think the Canary Islands are their own country, and in many ways they are, but they are firmly in the Spanish jurisdiction. If you want to eat, drink, chill, surf and meet like-minded travelers, then The Bubble is the place to do it.

A popular spot with backpackers making their way around Europe, The Bubble is the complete package. What’s more, there is a tonne of cheap and friendly hostels to stay in here too, meaning you can stay for a long time and a good time.

FUERTEVENTURA, Canary Islands

• WHEN: All year long but the main season runs from October to April

Fuerteventura is a Canary Island in the Spanish archipelago. It is one of the most popular destinations for surfers in Europe. Many famous people visit Fuerteventura for surfing and other outdoor activities.

For professional surfers, the months of October to April are the season of big waves. Nevertheless, there are always beaches accessible to beginners.

The wind blows all year round. However, in September there can be a few calm days.

El Cotillo is one of Fuerteventura’s top surf places because the sandy bottom is heavily washed out in the winter, resulting in big waves and new currents.

It’s a good spot for intermediate to advanced surfers. But it’s also great for beginners during the summer.

Beginners and skilled surfers alike will enjoy Flag Beach. It is characterized by a sandy bottom with rocky fragments. Beginners should wear booties.

Regardless of your skill level, Fuerteventura has more than ten beaches offering something great for each type of surfer.

PLAYA DE LAS AMERICAS, Tenerife

• WHEN: The main season for pros picks up from October until February. For beginners, it’s ideal all year round.

Playa de las Americas is a lovely town on Tenerife Island which is the main spot for surfing but also for tourism. Therefore, you can start from there but spend some other days in more secret spots. Life there is quite affordable, even during the main season.

Its perfect-all-year-long climate makes it an ideal surfing destination for Europeans in the winter. Outside temperatures are between 22–28°C and water temperatures are usually around 19–23°C, and that’s pretty dope, right?

As a highlight, you could consider the view you get while sitting on the board in the water waiting for your wave. Tenerife has the third-highest island volcano in the world and you can enjoy some seriously stunning views from there.

BUNDORAN BEACH, Ireland

• WHEN:   As with Cornwall in England, the best season for surfing in Ireland is autumn, between September and October.

Now, here is a country you probably didn’t expect to feature on this list! Ireland’s Atlantic Coast does, in fact, boast some pretty good surfing spots, and Bundoran Beach is certainly one of them.

This beach even hosted the European Surfing Championships back in 2011, just to give you an idea of the wave quality.

MULLAGHMORE, County Donegal, Ireland

• LEVEL: ONLY ADVANCED
• WHEN: WINTER MONTHS

Ireland has some of the best surfing places in Europe. The shores are where waves first reach when coming from the North Atlantic. They are especially powerful with the strength of the Gulf Stream behind them. It’s important to note that professionals should only surf at Mullaghmore as the stretch offers some of the largest waves.

Mullaghmore is a location with some of the world’s biggest waves. The bottom is also a rocky and dangerous drop. The waves here are for long riding, for fast action, and for tubes. It is possible to catch some great air, but it takes work.

Mullaghmore is one of the most difficult places to surf in the world, but it is well worth it. Paddling out to the breakpoint is exceptionally difficult. Winds from the coast are brutal and strong with constant rainy weather. Ensure you have ample gear to protect yourself from the waves and the weather.

SARDINIA, Italy

• WHEN:  The best time to surf in Sardinia is winter .
• LEVEL: BEGINNERS. INTERMEDIATE

Sardinia has so many surfing spots , you can’t imagine. It has the most consistent waves on the Mediterranean Sea, so you can’t go wrong with choosing it for your surfing holiday.

During the summer you can chill on the beaches on sunny days and enjoy the waves on the windy ones. It also has many cultural monuments and hiking trails you can explore while you are on the island.

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland

A small, quaint seaside resort town on the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Portrush invites many tourists and surfers.

What is called the Portrush-West Strand is an exposed beach break that has surf that is consistently great in the colder months, but it is usually flat during the summer.

In the colder weather, Portrush has a mix of wind swells and ground swells, with the best direction being from the northwest. There is plenty of surf at all stages of the tide, and Portrush is considered to have some of the best waves in Northern Ireland’s waters (85%-95%) swell that a surfer can ride. The beach breaks rights and lefts, and there is good surf at all stages of the tide except in summertime. Offshore winds come from the southeast, and there is some shelter from east winds.

At the west end of what is called West Strand, there is a quality, but unpredictable spot where there is a lefthand boulder reef that offers experienced surfers excitement and beauty. Because it requires exact swell direction to work since the waters are shallow and rocky, only experienced surfers should ride the waves. Mid/high tide only are the times for surfing in the challenging West Strand.

Arugam Bay surf is probably the most famous in all of Sri Lanka. With its mellow right-hand reefs and point breaks, it draws surfers when the beaches of the southwest are under the monsoon. Come between May and August to ride the long, peeling shoulders of epic spots like Whisky Point. You’ll love it!

An introduction to Arugam Bay surf

Anyone who’s ever been surfing Sri Lanka will surely have heard of Arugam Bay. It’s the jewel in the crown of the island’s impressive beach roster. Boasting some beautiful right-hand point breaks and a medley of reefs and even barrels a little further out of town, there’s something for every sort of rider. In more recent times, the die-hard surf crowd has been diluted by beach lovers and beginner surfers, which has broadened the range of hotels and fattened the lineup considerably.

But don’t be deterred, there are still loads of waves to go around. So-called Surf Point (also known as Main Point) is the anchor of the lot, offering fast and slow sections that can sometimes form nice and hollow rides right by the main town. To the north, the coast wiggled through coconut groves to beginner-friendly Whiskey Point. To the south, you’ll find the wild and distance point breaks of Okanda, where the crowds thin out.

On top of the world-class array of breaks, there’s another trump card in the deck: The Arugam Bay season. Being situated on the east side of the island means the swells here are working when the south-west coast is in monsoon. The upshot? The town almost singlehandedly makes Sri Lanka an all-round surf destination, with rideable conditions 365 days of the year spread from coast to coast. Yippee!

Where is arugam bay.

Arugam Bay sits on the far eastern edge of the Teardrop of India. It sits just 6km south of the regional hub of Pottuvil, which is the gateway to the east coast famed for its white-sand beaches. The main west-east highway that crosses the southern portion of Sri Lanka links straight here from Colombo. So do the fast motorways and coast roads that loop around Galle and Matara . That means it’s possible to complete the drive in from the airport in about 6.5 hours. You’re looking at the total opposite side of the island from the Dec-March surf spots of Hikkaduwa and Hiriketiya .

A guide to Arugam Bay surf spots

Arugam Bay has the best surf spots on the east coast of Sri Lanka. Some are right in front of the town, others are a drive to the south or north. Here’s a look at the whole lot…

Lighthouse is the most northerly spot that’s usually still included under the official list of Arugam Bay surf spots. It strings the shore just outside of the small village and lagoon of Komari, by the crumbled remains of an old WWII lighthouse (hence the name). What the wave lacks in consistency (seriously, don’t even bother when the stars aren’t aligned) it makes up for in shape…

It’s basically a duo of rippable right-handers when conditions are right. One is good for starters but the other is better suited to experienced surfers, coming with a boulder-sand bottom. Note how the waves at Lighthouse get faster throughout the season, as the sandbanks bulk up during the dry season swell direction.

Whisky Point

Mellow doesn’t quite do it justice here because the wave at Whisky Point is just about as chilled as it’s possible to get. It’s a beginner’s heaven, with soft, easy-going rights that break off a boulder point. Swells can pick up to 4 metres in heavy ocean storms, but they are virtually never seen in the main Arugam Bay season. Usually, it’s chest- or shoulder-high breakers that offer plenty of time to practice pop ups. Stay at the Whisky Point Resort that’s right in front to be the first on the sets in the morning – it’s a cracking hotel <3.

This is probably the wave you’ve seen photos off if you’ve been Googling up images of Arugam Bay surf spots. It’s a classic regional point break with what’s potentially a long, 50-150m ride coming off a series of boulders. The bottom is sand mixed reef, which is why most total beginners stick to the mini point that’s just on the other side. On big days it can barrel but also blows out at the sniff of a breeze.

Peanut Farm

On a long, beautiful beach that’s clad in sea vines and speckled with boulders, Peanut Farm offers some of the most accessible waves in the area. It’s a hubbub of surf schools from May to August, but don’t let that put you off – it’s a corker to learn on. The style? Expect a beach break with a sand bottom that gets its power from a low headland. The only tricky thing might be getting there – it’s hidden by a lagoon more than 7km south of town.

Elephant Rock/Crocodile Rock

Call it what you will, this jutting point break might be worth seeking out. You’ll need to commit because the walk to the shore is at least 20 minutes when carrying boards. The reward? Right-hand crumblers that can be pretty empty compared to other, more central, Arugam Bay spots. Just watch out for crocodiles !

It might be the farthest away from Arugam Bay town, but Okanda does offer ample reward for those who make the 23-kilometre journey. Not one, not two, but three individual point breaks await here. They cater to a range of different levels, but are generally strong intermediate and above. Things can get windy due to exposure, thought the waves hold up well to a massive 8-10ft on swell days. Beware of big rips close to the headland.

Where to stay in Arugam Bay for surfing

Arugam Bay has plenty of hotels. A lot of them will totally shut up shop for the low season (the monsoon season) and then open again when the rains depart and the swell improves around May time.

Babar Point ($$$)

With its leafy garden filled with palm trees surrounding a refreshing pool, Babar Point is a perfect place to relax after a heavy surf session. Luxury bungalows surrounding the pool come with outdoor showers and breezy al fresco seating areas. But the best part? All that is just a stroll away from the waves.

Arugambay Roccos ($$)

Arugambay Roccos fronts Main Street, just a stone’s throw from Main Point and its legendary right-hand breaks. It’s not your usual rickety cabana, but a fully-fledged beach resort. A cool, Bauhaus-style design covers the lot, with whitewashed villas that open for uninterrupted views over the Indian Ocean. There’s also a stunning central pool that’s just steps from the sand. It’s well worth sequestering some of the budget for this one!

Jetwing Surf ($$)

Jetwing Surf is actually located in Pottuvil, but is just shy of 2 miles away from Whisky Point. It’s worth considering because it’s got a stunning pool, lovely tropical-style cabana rooms, and a beach right out front.

The best surf camps in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a fantastic surf destination to do a surf camp. The mix of deep reefs, sandbar and point breaks means that it’s just about perfect for learner groups, which tend to be the main customers to planned surf packages. The other great thing is that this eastern corner of the island isn’t as built-up as the southwest, which means you can usually get real close to the shoreline within walking distance of the waves.

A guide to the Arugam Bay season

April (sometimes even march) to august.

Cue the high season in Arugam Bay. As the south-west monsoon sets in on the far side of Sri Lanka, the dry weather and sun is starting to hit this corner of the island. More than that, the dominant swell direction switches and the ocean becomes cleaner, inviting surfers to hit the spots from Okanda to Lighthouse.

Be wary that misconceptions about a short season in Arugam Bay, along with traditional holiday dates, mean that the place gets packed around August. A lot of the locals actually high tail it out of Dodge then, because the vibe changes a little – more partying, less chilling.

Wear: Rash vest/swimwear/shorty for long sessions. You also might want some good booties if you’re going to be hitting the Sri Lankan reefs.

October and November

These two shoulder months might see the gradual onset of the south-east monsoon, but they are actually a decent time to come surfing in Arugam Bay. You’ll notice that there are some pretty pumping days on the breaks that hold up better, like Okanada for example. That’s due to powerful ocean storms that match the changing of the season. Better than that are the smaller crowds, as the partiers make an exodus and the hotel prices drop.

Wear: Rash vest/swimwear/shorty for long sessions

December to March

The low season. Although that doesn’t mean the end of Arugam Bay surf trips. It’s just that the main breaks and reefs don’t really keep their shape when the ocean is wilder from December time onwards. In fact, it’s basically a whole load of whitewash, making it okay for beginners who want to practice on some of the rougher stuff. Weather wise, it’s not ideal. One day could be beaming sun, the next could be torrential rain that doesn’t end for weeks. You’ve been warned.

The Surf City

The Surf City is a surf school first and a surf shop second. They specialise in classes for beginners and up, along with board rentals of all shapes and sizes. However, you can drop in to grab any wax, fins or accessories you might need. Oh, and you can plan marine and on-land safaris here to boot!

No Worries Surf Shop

No Worries Surf Shop is more of a beach shack with rentals than a fully-fledged outlet for surf wares. But that’s part of its charm. Locally owned and with highly rated lessons (a full-marks 5 stars on TripAdvisor), it’s a great option to consider if you’re after some tuition or a softie for the day.

Where to eat in Arugam Bay

Get your hard-earned fix of Sri Lankan curry and spice after you’re done on the waves with the following top-notch eateries in Arugam.

A highly rated joint that specialises in uber-fresh Sri Lankan curries. You’ll find a friendly, welcoming owner and a menu that offers tangy sambol salads with locally caught seafood. The inside is simple and earthy, with timber tables and swinging plant pots. Pretty cool, huh?

Leaf and Vine

You’ll find aromatic dals, chickpea curries, fragrant rice and crispy onion bhajis bursting from the kitchen of Leaf and Vine . And if that’s still not enough to convince you to drop in, just check out that grassy eating area. It’s got front-row seats over the ocean, where you can kick back with a cold one and watch the surfers do their thing.

Things to do when you’re not surfing in Arugam Bay

The reality these days is that Arugam Bay surf is no longer all it’s about. Some travelers come for the stunning beaches; others for the nightlife; others for the amazing national parks. The upshot? There’s loads to get stuck into when the waves aren’t pumping (even though they pretty much always are!).

Elephant Rock

Located only about 4km away from Arugam Bay is the lovey bay of Elephant Rock. It offers secluded beaches and stunning views at sunset (which can be had from atop the rock itself). It’s also not uncommon to spot wild elephants roaming the nearby area.

Kumana National Park

Kumana National Park is the less-known and less-visited neighbour of the famous Yala National Park. Safari here offers more of an authentic experience, however – largely because it doesn’t draw the same crowds. You can spot a wide range of animals, from elephants to leopards to tropical birds. The park’s best-known attraction is an ornithologically rich mangrove swamp known as the Kumana Bird Reserve.

Pottuvil Lagoon

Go on a boat tour on the coastal Pottuvil Lagoon, an area of eastern Sri Lanka that’s positively thriving with wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may be able to see bathing elephants and crocodiles.

How to get to Arugam Bay

If you’re going to Arugam Bay, you’ll most likely be landing in Colombo Airport and traveling from there by land. Be prepared for quite a long journey, because Arugam Bay is on the opposite coast to the capital. We’d recommend making a couple of overnight stops along the way – the hiking mecca of Ella is around the midpoint, jus’ saying!

If you’re short on time, the easiest and most comfortable direct way to get to Arugam Bay is a private taxi. However, journey will take approximately 6-8 hours, and you should expect to pay at least $80. We’d actually recommend posting on the Srilanka car and driver hire group to find reliable drivers with the best rates (make sure to let them know beforehand if you’re planning to travel with your board).

You can also get an overnight bus from Colombo to Pottuvil (which is only a short tuk-tuk drive away from Arugam Bay), but we’ve heard reports that it’s tricky if you’re travelling with a board.
