Best Time To Visit Tawang: Overview Of Seasons

Planning to visit Tawang? The historic place attracts tourists from all over the world, who come for the mesmerizing sights and breathtaking nature. But it’s important to know when the best time to visit Tawang is, otherwise you won’t get to enjoy the beautiful region in all its glory!

Read on to learn more about the different seasons in Tawang, the best time to visit, and what some of the top things to do in the area are!

Answer: Summer Season

The best time to visit Tawang is the summer season. Most tourists that come to Tawang want to visit the spectacular monastery, and it is best experienced between March and June. This is the warmest season in the region, but you’re still not getting particularly high temperatures.

Tawang Hill Station sits at a rather high altitude, so it’s never going to be extremely hot there. The nights are rather chilly even in the summer, so it’s smart to pack some hoodies and a lightweight jacket.

The average highs during the summer season are in the 50-70s, while the average lows range from 10 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Naturally, early spring is the colder season in Tawang, so if you’d rather have nice and warm weather, it would be best to plan a June visit. It’s just before the start of the Monsoon season with some 12 days of rain on average and some of the warmest weather you will get in Tawang.

That might sound like a lot of rain, but it’s really not – it isn’t constant rainfall but rather scattered showers all over the region. It’s just enough to keep nature spectacularly green until the monsoon season hits and it starts to look like a fairytale.

May and June are the ideal months to visit Tawang. The warm weather is easy to enjoy, there’s very little rain, and all the tourist attractions are open. This is the busiest season in the region, so don’t be surprised to see other crowds in the area. It’s worth noting that Tawang rarely gets super busy – the remote location and inaccessibility of the area discourage many tourists from visiting.

Reaching Tawang is an entire adventure on its own, what with the remote airport and long drive. It’s a fun adventure if you’re visiting in the summer when the roads are in excellent condition. It’s not as fun if you’re visiting in the off-season, since there’s always a chance of the roads being blocked off due to the weather.

Although the summer season in Tawang technically starts in March, you should know that the region is much colder in March and April. There’s even less precipitation than in May and June, but snowfall is still possible in early March.

The average temperatures in March and April are in the mid-50s during the day, with nights in the mid-30s. May and June have slightly higher temperatures – mid-60s during the day and 50s in the night.

Monsoon Season (July – September)

July, August, and September are monsoon seasons in Tawang. The temperatures are pretty high, but the rain discourages most tourists from visiting. It rains almost every single day in Tawang during the monsoon season, and unless you’re fine with the humidity, you’ll want to skip traveling to the region during these months.

The average highs during the Monsoon season are in the mid-60s and 70s, while the lows are in the high 50s. This is the hottest season in the region but the heavy rainfall prevents the temperatures from getting unbearably high.

In July, the daily chance of precipitation is around 60%. That number is slightly lower in August and September (around 50%), so September is probably the best month to visit during the monsoon season.

The rain does add to the beauty of the place quite a bit. Everything looks rather lush and green, and the streams start to swell. This is a good season to explore the beautiful nature surrounding the monastery, especially if you are into hiking. It’s worth noting that the rain can impact the accessibility of some trails, but it’s nothing to be scared of, as long as you have the appropriate gear.

Also, it’s important to mention that it’s not going to rain constantly in Tawang. The showers are scattered throughout the region, so it’s possible to have some nice, sunny days as well.

The main issue with the monsoon season is that heavy rain can sometimes close off roads and make it impossible to leave the town for a little while. But this rarely happens – sure, the roads will be riskier if they get wet but that’s usually as bad as it gets.

Winter Season

The winter season in Tawang is from November to February. These are the coldest months in Tawang, with average temperatures that range from 12 to 50 degrees (Fahrenheit). There’s often heavy snowfall in the area that can make it difficult to move between towns, and this usually discourages tourists from visiting in the winter. However, winters in Tawang can be pretty magical, especially if you are into skiing.

There are quite a few tall peaks surrounding Tawang, and they get completely covered with snow in December. Skiing here is a magical experience, so there’s definitely a reason to visit Tawang even in the winter season. The snowfall can sometimes last until May in the mountains, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to go hiking in early spring.

There are certainly advantages of visiting Tawang in the winter, but there are also a few things to keep in mind. Winter sees quite a lot of snowfall in Tawang Hill Station and it’s not uncommon for major roads to be blocked because of the snow. A lot of the tourist attractions become inaccessible as well, and it can be very difficult to move from town to town.

If you want to experience this magical place in the winter, you’ll need to do some serious preparation. That includes packing your warmest waterproof clothes, but also contacting the Tawang tourist offices and checking the conditions. It’s possible for snow to block off the entire town and there’s really no point in traveling halfway across the world if you can’t even reach your destination.

Also, it’s not a great idea to go hiking when there’s a thick layer of snow on the ground. There’s a risk of avalanche and it’s easy to get lost when there’s a very thick snow blanket on the ground. You risk getting hurt – or worse – so unless you’re an experienced hiker and familiar with the region, it’s best not to explore any snow-covered hiking trails.

How To Reach Tawang

Tawang is not exactly an easy place to reach, at least for the average tourist. There aren’t any direct flights into Tawang – the closest airport is Tezpur airport in Assam, India. It’s some 350 kilometers away from Tawang, so there’s still quite a lot of traveling to be done even after you land.

Tawang is connected with roads to Tezpur airport, and that’s the only way to reach it. It takes anywhere between 9 and 14 hours to drive the 350 kilometers from Tezpur to Tawang, and that’s only if the roads are in good condition. There are buses between two towns and you can also opt for a shared taxi ride. The taxi is a little faster than the bus, but you’re still in for a very long journey.

In addition to that, you must be aware of the road conditions before you fly into Tezpur. Heavy rain and snow can block off the road and make it impossible to reach Tawang, and it’s in your best interest to avoid experiencing that for yourself.

Top Things To See And Do In Tawang

It’s such a hassle to reach Tawang that it’s unlikely you will travel there more than once in a lifetime. So, make sure you catch all the best attractions in the area the first time around!

Tawang Monastery

Most people who travel to Tawang come to see the Tawang monastery – it’s the second largest monastery in the world, right after the Potala Palace in Tibet. It sits near the top of a mountain, offering a breathtaking view of the Tawang Chu valley with its snow-covered mountain peaks and forest.

The monastery is built like a three-story mansion with a huge assembly hall, 65 living quarters, and many other structures. By far the most popular attraction at the monastery is the 18-foot tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni

Tawang monastery was built in the 17 th century by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso, at the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama. This monastery was also the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama, and it remains one of the most important holy sites for Tibetan Buddhists.

Sela Pass is a mountain pass that connects Tawang with parts of India, and it’s one of the highest altitude driveable mountain passes in the world. Traversing it is an incredible experience that you should definitely have while you are in Tawang. This is a sacred area for Buddhists as they believe that there are 101 sacred lakes in the area around the Sela Pass.

The mountain pass is usually open year-round, but it can sometimes be blocked because of landslides. This can happen in the winter or monsoon season, and you should be fine if you’re visiting Tawang in the summer.

Sela Pass is one of the most visited attractions in Arunachal Pradesh and it’s easy to reach from Tawang via route 13. Visit the Sela Lake on the north side of the Pass for some truly spectacular landscape views.

Nuranang Waterfalls

Nuranang Waterfalls are another popular tourist attraction in the area. They are around 100 meters high, and they’re without a doubt some of the most spectacular waterfalls in this part of the world.

The area with waterfalls is some 2 kilometers away from the Town of Jang, which lies on the road that connects Tawang and Bomdila. In total, the waterfalls are about 40 kilometers outside Tawang, so it is a bit of an adventure to reach them.

You can reach the waterfall area by bus or by car if you’re okay driving. It’s without a doubt worth it to go through the hassle of getting to the Nuranang Waterfalls – the place is so beautiful you’ll be in awe. It’s also important for the region thanks to the small hydel at the base that generates electricity for the locals!

Gorichen Peak

Gorichen Peak is a must-visit for avid hikers. It is the tallest peak in Arunachal Pradesh at 6858 meters, and it’s about 165 kilometers outside of Tawang town. It’s not exactly easy to reach but it’s definitely worth it for trekkers and climbers. Hikers should head to Chokersam base camp for some magical views of Gorichen Peak, while only the most experienced climbers should attempt to climb this summit.

Gorichen peak is icy and rocky, and the trail to it is not that different. It poses a challenge even to seasoned climbers, and despite this, it manages to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

You might also get a glimpse of the Monpa tribe. They inhabit the villages in the area, and for them, Gorichen peak is a sacred site that protects locals from all evil.

Taktsang Gompa

Taktsang Gompa (Tiger’s Den) is situated on a hilltop cliff, some 40 kilometers outside Tawang. It’s one of the most beautiful religious places in the area, and it’s incredibly peaceful there. Also, it’s pretty cold here since Tiger’s Den is on a rather high altitude, so you’ll want to bring some warm clothes.

It’s worth noting that summer is the best season to visit this spectacular attraction. It’s possible to reach it in the monsoon season, but not really in the winter. The road is often inaccessible in the winter, plus it gets very cold in the winter. Taktsang Gompa is encircled by a thick forest and it offers some of the best views you’ll get in the entire Tawang region so don’t forget your camera!

Sela Pass

Tawang does not really need much of an introduction. It is one of the places in Arunachal that was always on the tourist map, while people had no clue about other parts of the state. Naturally, it is also the most developed area in terms of tourism. The nature of the terrain is such that you don’t just visit one place. When you plan for Tawang, you normally have a few days at hand and also make stops at either Bomdila or Dirang. However, there are dozens of underappreciated spots on the entire route and if you want, you can easily extend your trip for a couple of weeks.

Things to do in and around Tawang

Tawang, bordering Tibet on the north-western corner of Arunachal Pradesh, is a major center of Tibetan Buddhism and it has played an important role in their history. The fact that the Sixth Dalai Lama was born in Tawang in the 17 th century, tells us of the importance of the town in the Tibetan world. It is dominated by Monpa people.

Tawang Monastery

Tawang Gompa

The 400-year-old Tawang Monastery atop the hill dominates the landscape of Tawang and it is the largest monastery in India and second-largest in the world after the one in Lhasa, which itself makes it worth a visit. It is a massive complex that takes time to explore fully. You can also attend the morning payers for a spiritual experience, but you will have to wake up before 5 AM.

Se La Pass and Lake

Se La Lake

Se La, often mistakenly called Sela Pass (because La means Pass), is a 4170 meter high pass that connects West Kameng and Tawang districts. So, it is basically the gateway to Tawang and at such a high altitude, you can expect to find snow during most of the year. There is a lake near the summit, called Sela Lake, which is considered sacred in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Bum La is a mountain pass is a border pass between Tibet’s Cona County and India’s Tawang district. It is 37 km away from the town of Tawang and 43 km from the town of Cona (Tsona Dzong). As it is a sensitive area, visiting it requires additional permission from DC Tawang. Bum La is one of the frontier passes that used to be a trading route connecting Tibet and India. When the current Dalai Lama escaped Tibet and entered India in 1959, this is the route his entourage took.

Sangester Tso (Madhuri Lake)

This lake is located near Bum La. It was created by the falling rocks of an earthquake and decaying trees can still be seen in the middle of the lake. After the shooting of Bollywood film Koyla, people started calling it Madhuri Lake after Madhuri Dixit but the original name is Sangester Tso. You will also come accross another lake called PT Tso en route.

Nuranang Falls

A beautiful waterfall is located at a slight diversion from the town of Jang, which is at the midpoint between Se La and Tawang. The best views here are in the afternoon, on a sunny day, when the light falls directly and creates a rainbow.

Tawang War Memorial

Tawang War Memorial

The war memorial, as the name suggests, commemorates fallen heroes and is maintained by the Indian Army. There is a big chorten underneath which there is a small museum with maps, arms, and details from the war of 1962.

Jaswant Garh

It is another war memorial just after Se La. It is located at a high altitude and commemorates the story of rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat who fought bravely but lost his life in the 1962 war. His belongings can still be seen here. There are some local legends associated with him too.

Giant Buddha Statue

Just like any oher Buddhist town, Tawang has a huge Buddha statue overlooking the town. Views are good from here and there are some other interesting sculptures too.

Urgelling Gompa

Urgelling Gompa

It is a smaller but a very important monastery in Tawang. This 14th century gompa is even older than the main Tawang Monastery and the 6th Dalai Lama was born here. Do visit the ancient stupas inside one of the houses. It’s around 3 km from Tawang city centre.

Offbeat things to do around Tawang

tawang tourist season

Beyond the obvious attractions described above, there are many interesting things one can do in and around Tawang. Ani Gompas (Nunneries), Brokpa Yak Herders, Birding in Se La, Mokto Papermakers, Chakzam Bridge, Geshila Peak & much more unexplored delights from offbeat Tawang.

Here is a more comprehensive list of Offbeat Things to do in Tawang .

Top Places to Visit on the Tawang-Dirang-Bomdila Circuit

Bhalukpung is a small town on the Assam-Arunachal border, divided between both states. It is located on the banks of a beautiful blue river which is called Kameng in Arunachal and Jia Bhoroli in Assam. It is a regular stop for people going towards more famous Tawang and is a picnic spot for locals. However, Bhalukpung itself has enough to lure the visitors, especially for nature lovers and combined with nearby Seijosa, it is considered to be a circuit on its own by Arunachal Tourism. It is also known for adventure activities like river rafting.

Tipi Orchid Center

Tipi is a few KMs ahead of Bomdila. It is known for its orchidarium. The jungles behind Tipi is the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary. Especially the spring season is the best for orchids. In case you have not realized yet, Arunachal is one of the richest places for orchids with more than 600 recorded varieties.

Bomdila is the headquarter of West Kameng district. It is the biggesttown in the region with a huge monastery at the center and many smaller monasteries. There are many hotels and homestays here and the market is also worth a visit if you want to buy local products.

Dirang Boutique Cottages-4

Dirang is a beautiful Monpa town 40 KMs ahead of Bomdila, with a famous monastery with an ethereal setting. There is also a hot water spring here which is very famous and you can take a dip here too if you have time. There is also an ancient gompa nearby and simply walking around the valley can be a delightful experience. Nearby Dirang Dzong is the original village here which was built around a fortress. You can go trekking over the valley and also visit some offbeat ares like Chugh Valley.

Tenga & Rupa

Tenga Valley is the region that you cross before Bomdila. This region has significant military presence and it is the gateway to the Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary. The alternative route via Shergaon also meets here. There are additional attractions ian and around such as the Chilipam Gompa. .

Eagle’s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary

tawang tourist season

Average travellers may not have heard of Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary but it is the holy grail for bird watchers. It is located on the western side of Bhalukpong to Bomdila route with an entry from Tenga. It boasts of an extensive array of flora and fauna. Some of the birds available here include rufous-bellied hawk-eagle, pied falconet, common hill-partridge, temminck’s tragopan, ashy wood-pigeon, rufous-necked hornbill, ward’s trogon, golden-throated barbet, crimson-breasted pied-woodpecker, pale-headed woodpecker, grey-chinned minivet, eye-browed thrush, gould’s shortwing, grey-sided laughing-thrush, red-faced liocichla, coral-billed scimitar-babbler, wren-babblers, red-tailed minla, tit-babblers/fulvettas, yuhinas, parrotbills, mountain tailorbird, tesias, flycatcher-warblers, rufous-bellied and grey-crested tits, brown-throated treecreeper, yellow-bellied flowerpecker, mrs gould’s and fire-tailed sunbird, gold-naped black-finch, bullfinch etc.

108 Manes at Manda La

Mandala is the best-kept secret for bird watchers. Actually, serious birders know about it already, while no one else has even heard of it. It is a secluded high altitude spot around 25 KMs from Dirang with a lodge frequented by hardened birders and photographers. A Buddhist monument with 108 Manes have been built here too, which draws many visitors.

Thembang is a traditional village centered around a fortress (Thembang Dzong). It is an ancient village with centuries-old structures and a great place to experience Monpa history and culture.

Shergaon

Shergaon is a small diversion from Bomdila. It is a region dominated by the Buddhist Sherdukpen people. It was lesser-known until recently but it is beginning to grow its tourism of late. You can stay at the local homestay and experience the rustic charm and walk along the fruit orchards experiencing yet another exotic culture. The local Gompa as well as the Choskorong waterfall are worth visiting too. Nearby Morshing is a Monpa village higher up and from there you can drive or hike to Lagayla Gompa , yet another historical monastery with many stories associated with it.

Sangti Valley

Sangti Valley is a short diversion from Dirang. It is a beautiful secluded valley inhabited by the Monpas that is slowly beginning to get famous. During spring, these meadows get covered with colourful orchids and wildflowers.

Trekking in Tawang

Dirang Trek

There are many trek routes all over these mountains although not all have been properly explored. The most important long trek here is the Bailey’s Trail, which starts from somewhere near Thembang and ends near Mago, near the border. A lot of small hikes are possible, especially in the lower hills of West Kameng. I recently did a short hike around Dirang Valley and it was delightful. So, the potential of this field here needs to be explored.

Gorichen is the main range that dominates the horizons here and you will see the peaks, however, climbing the actual peak or even reaching the base camp may not be easy as it is a sensitive border region and permits are not easy for general tourists.

People, Culture & Festivals in Tawang & West Kameng

Torgya Festival

This region is dominated by the Monpas who are Buddhists and have close historical relations with nearby neighbouring Bhutan as well as Tibet. Monasteries, stupas and other Buddhist structures dominate the landscapes. The Shergaon region is inhabited by a different Buddhist group called the Sherdukpens while you will find another small group called Buguns near the Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary.

Local cuisines, culture, apparel, handicrafts etc are worth exploring too. If you are in the mood for shopping, you can always explore the local markets. The emporiums in Bomdila and Tawang also have a good collection of authentic handicrafts.

There are many festivals that take place throughout the year. For example, I attended the monastic festival of Torgya in January at Tawang Gompa. There are many others like Losar, Saga Dawa, Choe Kor, etc. Check this for a complete list . Ask the locals for dates if you want to attend them. Apart from them, a touristy Tawang Festival is also organized nowadays every October.

How to Reach Tawang?

By bus or shared car (timings & rates from tezpur & guwahati).

Guwahati to Tawang is 445 KMs and generally, people do not cover it in one go and halt at either Bomdila or Dirang, as it is a very long and tedious journey that also involves crossing the 4100 meters high Sela Pass. If you are reliant on public transport, you can look for morning buses from ISBT Guwahati. It leaves at around 7 AM and reaches Bomdila by the evening. Next morning, you can find Tawang Bus from Bomdila. Guwahati to Bomdila bus costs around INR 500-550 and Bomdila to Tawang will cost around INR 350-400.

If you are already in Tezpur, you can look for shared cars (Sumos) going upwards in the morning. You can stop directly to Tawang to stop at Bomdila or Dirang. They generally leave very early in the morning around 5.30-6 AM.

Tezpur to Bomdila INR 500-600

Tezpur to Dirang INR 700

Tezpur to Tawang INR 1200-1400

Car or Bikes

If you have your own vehicle, still you will have to halt one night around Bomdila or Dirang as it will be a very tedious journey. Also, be careful about crossing the Sela Pass on the second day. As it happens with high passes, you are never sure when it snows or when the weather deteriorates.

Where to Stay in Tawang?

As a highly developed tourist area, Tawang has dozens of hotels, resorts, and homestays at various price points. For the best experience, look for a good homestay run by a local family, so that you can get an authentic Monpa experience.

Best Season to visit Tawang?

Personally, I feel the spring & early summer (March-May), as well as post-monsoon months (September-October), are the best time to visit the Tawang circuit. I visited in January, the peak of winter. You may like it if you have some fascination for snowfall but, to be honest, I prefer warmer weather when visibility is better and easier to roam around.

Mobile and Internet Connectivity in Tawang

Mobile and data connectivity was reasonably good all along the Tawang-Bomdila circuit on my Airtel connection. There is no problem at all in lower areas such as Bomdila & Dirang. Once you cross the Se La, I expected it to be weak in Tawang but it was still working. Tawang has electricity issues and so there are occasional power cuts and the network also goes down during those times but it works when the power is there.

Can you suggest someone to plan a trip for Tawang?

Visiting on your own is possible but can be difficult, especially to find the really offbeat stuff. If you need help, you can always contact someone like HolidayScout who can arrange everything for you.

Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Tawang

As you probably know, you need this permit to enter Arunachal. You can get it online or if you are going through a tour operator, you can get it through them. Check this post on Arunachal ILP for details.

The Sela pass and the Himalayas form an absolute enchantment for every visitor. For the people of the North East, Sela pass is more than a masterpiece from god’s tapestry to be enjoyed. It is also a lifeline for them as the Sela pass is the only path that connects Tawang to the rest of the country.

Sela pass with its snowy picturesque setting is a mesmerizing experience for every tourist. The Sela lake, which is essentially one of the most beautiful lakes in the area runs along with this iconic location. The Sela pass and the Sela lake situated at an altitude of 4170 meters are a gateway to Arunachal and in a way tell you the treasures that lie ahead within the state. The frozen lake can delve you into the utmost tranquility. Sela pass is an ideal location to absorb the true beauty of Tawang and anyone who visits Tawang should never miss the chance to visit the great Sela pass.

2. Visit Tawang Monastery

Tawang monastery, also known as Golden Namgyal Lhatse, is one of the most treasured entities of Tawang. Towering at a height of 3000 meters above sea level, the Tawang monastery has been recognized as the second-largest monastery in the world. The monastery is believed to be 400 years old and controls 17 gompas in the region. Housing almost 300 monks, the monastery also gives a breathtaking view of the Tawang Chu valley. The quintessential feature of the monastery is however the 8-meter high statue of Lord Buddha which will captivate you without a doubt.

Having been built about 400 years ago, the Tawang monastery has a rich history of it. The three-storeyed building was founded by Merak Lama Lodge Gyamtso to complete the wish of Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, the 5th Dalai Lama in 1860-61. It belonged to the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism and had a religious association with the Drepung Monastery of Lhasa, which continued during the period of British rule. The artwork and the stunning interiors of the main temple will leave you mesmerized. The paintings, ancient scriptures in the library, the brilliance in architecture and the vibrant festivals are all the more reasons why a visit to the Tawang Monastery is a must.

3. Visit Madhuri Lake

Arunachal Pradesh can boast of several beautiful lakes but rest assured nothing they all pale in comparison to the breathtaking Madhuri lake. The palatial mountains that surround the lake just add to the splendor of the great Madhuri lake. Located at a height of 12000 ft above sea level, Madhuri lake is beautified by the addition of towering trees in its banks. The serene beauty, tucked between the towering hills is an ideal place for people craving solitude and calmness. It is least surprising that this iconic location attracts a lot of city dwellers. It also holds a very special place in the hearts of Buddhists of both India and nearby Tibet who come here every year to pray. A splash of water on your face and you feel a rejuvenation like never before. A visit to the Tawang lake is something to be not missed.

4. Visit Nuranang Falls

Untouched, unperturbed, and unexplored. These three words describe the Nuranang falls of Tawang perfectly. This pristine beauty is still unexplored and lesser-known to the outside world. A spectacular waterfall, Nuranang with its splendid view of white sheets of falls cascading from a height of 100 meters is all enough reason to visit this enigmatic location. Nuranang Falls is largely unknown to the popular tourist trail making it an offbeat and tranquil spot.

The crystal clear water is ideal for swimming and a dip in this amazing falls is all you need for refreshment and rejuvenation. The lush greens nearby and the caressing hilltops yonder will give present you with a delightful experience that you can cherish for eternity. If you are a shutterbug, then you are in luck, nothing beats the view of Nuranang falls and is something to be etched in memory and frames. At the falls, you can visit the Hydel plant which generates electricity for the nearby areas from the force of the waterfalls. Nuranang fall is a great place to have a glimpse if nothing of the great beauty of Arunachal. Arunachal Pradesh is cold almost all year round and thus the best period to visit is from February till November.

While you’re at it, carry some woolens, it might come in handy.

5. Visit Tawang War Memorial

A 40- foot high multi-hued memorial, Tawang War Memorial dedicated to the war heroes of the Indian Army of Sino-India war in 1962. Also known as Namgyal Chorten, Overlooking the Tawang-Chu valley, this memorial was constructed to remember the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Indian Army. Tawang War Memorial is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Arunachal Pradesh without a doubt.

The war memorial has two rooms on each side. The first room contains maps, photographs, artifacts, etc of the war heroes and the other is sound and light showroom, telling the tale of the heroism of the Indian soldiers. 8. Visit to Jaswant Garh

9. visit to p.t tso lake, 10. visit to urgelling gompa, history of tawang.

Locals here believe that Tawang derived its name from the Grandiose Tawang Monastery. Perching on the edge of the ridge running along the western part of Tawang Township. Ta means Horse and Wang mean Chosen. As the legend goes, the site of the present Monastery is believed to have been chosen by a horse owned by Mera Lama Lodge Gyatso. Who was searching for an ideal place to set up a monastery but couldn’t. So he decided to pray for the guidance of divine power.

As he opened his eyes after prayer, he found his horse missing. So, he went out searching for his missing horse and found it on the top of a hill known as Tana Mandekhang. Where once stood the palace of King Kala Wangpo. Believing it to be a sign, Mera lama Lodge Gyatso built the monastery with the help of the people. Thus, Mera Lama Lodge Gyatso founded the monastery in late 1681

However, there is also another belief of derivation on the name Tawang. The great treasure revealer, Terton Pemalingpa gave initiations such as Tamdin and Ka-glad, and hence the place came to be known as Tawang. Ta an abbreviation of Tamdin Wang meaning Initiation.

Tawang Itinerary – About Tawang Valley | Tawang History

Beautiful landscape near Tawang

It is imperative to understand briefly the history of Tawang India and the legends associated with it before delving into the attractions and experiences that await you there. The origins of Tawang city date back to medieval times and are lost in the grey corridors of time.

Tawang is synonymous with the monastery that stands as its best-known icon and the history of both are inextricably linked.

Legend has it that, sometime in the latter half of the 17th century (1680-81), Merak LamaLodre Gyatso arrived from Lhasa on the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama . His mission was to build a Buddhist monastery in the land of the Monpas . The land of the Monpa tribe stretched across what are now the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.

Merak Lama sat in deep meditation, hoping for divine guidance about where the monastery should come up. When he emerged from his meditation, he found his horse missing. He went in search of his horse and found it grazing on a beautiful and verdant hill that looked over the valley.

He found the place, perfect for a monastery, and taking this incident as a divine instruction, he decided to build the monastery there.

Tawang Monastery

In the year 1680-81, the Tawang Monastery came up , it shone like a pearl, perched on a high cliff, caressed by clouds, a truly mystical place, and the perfect abode of the spirit of Buddhism. The monastery was known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which in Tibetan means, “the complete paradise of divine victory .

“ The town that came up around the monastery came to be known as Tawang , which literally translates in Tibetan as “ chosen by the horse .”

Tawang has had a chequered political history. It was under the Tibetan administration till 1950, when Tibet lost its autonomy, and became a part of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Tawang thus came under the control of the Chinese. It was in the year 1951, that India finally took control of Tawang.

However, the 1962 war with China saw Tawang fall to the Chinese forces and was in their control for a brief period before the ceasefire and withdrawal of the Chinese army. In spite of this somewhat chaotic history, Tawang is enveloped in an aura of calm and serenity and exudes a mystical charm.

The best time to visit Tawang, a serene and beautiful state of Arunachal Pradesh, is something most individuals are unaware of. It is not surprising given so many factors, including Arunachal's remote location, some most underrated places to visit in Tawang , and the general lack of public awareness of the North-Eastern states. Tawang is a lovely town on the west side of Arunachal Pradesh in India.

Then there are those who prefer to travel during the off-season for a variety of reasons, including fewer crowds, cheaper hotels, or simply a unique experience.

Furthermore, all of the rains in the area show up, offering some breathtaking views for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers.

Tawang Valley in Arunachal : Your ultimate travel guide

A quaint little town at 10,000 feet above the sea level with the mighty Himalayas overlooking from all around. Crystal clear glacial lakes, gorgeous spotless blue sky, and awe inspiring landscapes. A thriving peace loving Buddhist population mingled with Tibetan culture, contrasting an omnipresent military establishment. Yes, we are talking about Tawang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, India’s eastern most state; and this is your ultimate travel guide to visit Tawang.

If you have visited  Leh-Ladakh  (click to read my experience) in India’s extreme north direction, you will find Tawang quite similar; yet, a lot different as well. Though Arunachal caps India’s eastern boundaries, Tawang Valley is not that east. It lies at the western border of the state, very near to Bhutan in the west, and Tibet- China in the north. Tawang Valley in Arunachal is undoubtedly one of India’s most beautiful Himalayan towns.

First time in Tawang Valley in Arunachal:

Though our first visit to Tawang Valley in Arunachal in the autumn this year was extremely tasking physically, it was a wonderful experience, nonetheless.

After quite a bit of research, we decided to plan our first trip to Arunachal in October. We thought autumn would be nice weather and good conditions for photography. While the latter proved true, the weather was still not the best to enjoy. The temperature was barely in two digits, and it was windy too! Parina caught cold in no time. And then it was hard times for her. I managed just about somehow.

tawang-valley-arunachal

However, on the positive side, the highlights of the trip were our visits to Bumla pass (Indo-China border) and Tawang monastery. The breathtaking landscape of Tawang Valley in Arunachal reminded me of my times in Ladakh the previous year. Besides, I love visiting Buddhist monasteries. To my delight, Tawang Valley and the whole of Arunachal have plenty of them.

It’s difficult to miss the signs of Indo-China 1962- conflict, and its  current  reflections in the large presence of troops. Contrary to our expectations, there were hardly any villages/ towns on the route, and thus, a very sparse population. In fact, it’s likely that one would see more troops than civilians! Visiting the War Memorial and related sites was a great learning experience.

Tawang Valley in Arunachal: A little fact sheet

What’s in a name.

Legend has it that in the 17th century, a Tibetan monk (Mera Lama) discovered a gorgeous green pasture while searching for a horse. In love with the place, Lama built a beautiful monastery there. Later habitation came up around that monastery, and it came to be known as Ta-wang, which translates into ‘chosen by horse’ (Ta: horse; Wang: chosen). Though there are other versions, I loved this one!

Brief history:

Some places are more important for their history and culture than anything else; Tawang is one of those. Till 1914, Tawang was under Tibetan rule, when it signed an agreement with British India recognizing McMahon Line as the international border. Since then, British India took control of Tawang and the rest of Arunachal Pradesh. Quite naturally, even after British relinquished India in 1947,  it remained under Indian rule .

In 1962, China took control of Tawang briefly during the Indo-China war. Surprisingly though, they retracted voluntarily afterwards, although they haven’t stopped claiming it later! ( Suggested further reading:  BBC article ).  Thus, it continues to be a flash point of future war between the two neighbouring nuclear powers. This clearly explains the presence of large Indian troops in Tawang.

bumla-pass-tawang-valley-arunachal

Under Indian possession, Arunachal Pradesh was earlier known as North Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA) till 1972, when it got its current name. Its name literally translates into ‘the land of the rising sun’, which signifies the first point of sunrise for the Indian subcontinent. Along with the new name, it became a Union Territory in 1972, and got full statehood in 1987.

Tawang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh belongs to the Monpa people, largely. Monpa means “from the land of Mon”, ‘Mon’ meaning south of Tibet. Monpas are followers of Tibetan Buddhism now. They speak a language of the Tibetan-Burmese family, and write the Brahmi script. Monpas contribute generously to religious causes. In fact, the monasteries manage their finances from these contributions. Their religious allegiance is so high that if they have three children, the middle one mostly becomes a monk!

Tawang Valley in Arunachal: Your ultimate guide

One needs at least 5 days to visit Tawang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. Of course, to explore more nearby places, one needs to add days. But we had planned for 5 days. Let me share our itinerary (and experience) so that you can plan for yourself.

  • Day-0:  Reached Guwahati late in the evening.
  • Day-1:  Road trip (by bus) from Guwahati to Tawang Valley via Bhalukpong. It takes 20 hours! We started in the morning on day-1 and reached there the next morning.
  • Day- 2:  Explored local Tawang town, planned for Bumla pass visit the next day.
  • Day-3:  Visited Bumla pass and Madhuri lake; Tawang market in the evening.
  • Day-4:  Road trip exploring Nuranang waterfall, Sela pass and Dirang. Reached Bomdila in the evening, and night over there.
  • Day-5:  Explored Bomdila, and road trip to Guwahati via Bhalukpong.

Other  places of interest in the Tawang Valley in Arunachal:

Apart from the places that we covered (in the itinerary above), there are a few more places of interest in and around Tawang Valley in Arunachal. One may take note of these, if one has more time.

  • Monasteries:  Gyangong Ani Gompa || Gorsam Chorten Stupa (60 kms) || Taktsang Gompa
  • Mountain peaks:  Geshila peak (visible from Tawang) || Gorichen peak
  • Other places:  Thingbu hot spring (90 kms) || Zemithang village (70 kms).

Day-1: Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip

On my way from the airport to the hotel in Guwahati, I realized that  I had forgotten to apply for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal. I applied online immediately, but got no reply! Next morning, however, a guy at the Network Bus station helped us get our ILPs for a small fee. Thus, I guess, apart from the government website, there are a few authorized agencies who provide such services.

Routes from Guwahati to Tawang:

There are two distinct routes from Guwahati to Tawang Valley in Arunachal, via two different entry points. One route goes via Udalguri, Bhairabkunda, Balemu (entry point), Shergaon and Bomdila. The second one goes via Rangapara, Tezpur, Bhalukpong (entry point), and Bomdila. Both the routes converge near Bomdila, and then take the common route of Bomdila- Dirang- Sela Pass to reach Tawang Valley.

Bus service is available only on the second route. We took the second route because we decided to take the bus.  As taking a cab both ways would be too costly (~Rs.15,000 each way), we decided to take an overnight bus to Tawang, and take a cab on the way back. So, we booked two seats (Rs. 1500 each) in the only bus available online (though we learnt later that there’s another bus).

Guwahati to Bhalukpong:

The bus was supposed to start at 9:30 AM; but reaching at the Network bus station, we got to know that a pick-bus would take us to the ISBT bus station, from where we would board the main bus. The bus started around 11:00 AM. Though it was not Volvo-class,  it was comfortable (non-AC),  marginally  better than the local buses. However, it was not good for sleeping at night.

Irritatingly, through the day, it kept stopping at places to pick and drop local passengers.  I guess, because there were not enough direct passengers to Tawang, they had to take local passengers to cover their costs. Besides, since there are only a few buses, they are used as goods carriers as well. It took a longish stop at a vegetable mandi (market yard). All these stops were time consuming, but understandable.

The bus took a turn before entering Tezpur. By the time it was dark, we reached Bhalukpong, the entry point for Tawang Vally in Arunachal Pradesh. It’s a small town shared by Assam and Arunachal, although it primarily belongs to Arunachal. There was an easy checking by the border police, where we all had to get down from the bus. They checked our ILPs and let us board the bus on the other side of the border. In the meantime, I got enough time to visit a Durga Puja pandal where Dussehra festival was in full swing.

durga-puja-bhalukpong

Bhalukpong to Tawang Valley:

From Bhalukpong, the bus picked up some speed, and reached Nag temple for dinner around 9.30 PM. The food was just manageable. After dinner, we tried to sleep (whatever we could), albeit with a lot of difficulty. We didn’t really notice any other town or the Sela pass on the way. The bus did stop at a new tunnel (Nechiphu tunnel) allowing us to take some night shots of the tunnel.

Towards the end of the journey, it became really cold in the bus, though manageable with one good jacket, and a cap. Reached Tawang on scheduled time at about 6.00 AM.

Day-2: Tawang Town

Getting down from the bus, the first thing that I noticed was the absolutely clean sky and fresh air. Though the temperature was below our liking,  the air felt like full of oxygen, and  the sky was spotless blue. Seriously, it felt so fresh that I felt like breathing deep to my heart’s content. Such a drastic/ pleasant difference from the polluted air of Delhi!

tawang-town

We had a bit of struggle identifying the guesthouse, but reached with some help from the owner (Nawang). The room at the guesthouse was not too well insulated; so, it was going to be two difficult nights for us, I guessed!

Nawang introduced us to his brother- Chambe, who had a cab, and we booked him for the day. After a good nap, we got freshened up, and Chambe came to pick us up to show us around the town.

Tawang Monastery:

Tawang Valley in Arunachal is synonymous with its famous monastery- Gadyal Namgyal Lhatse monastery, also known as Tawang Monastery. Founded by Merak Lama, a disciple of the 5th Dalai Lama, H.H. Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso in 1680, it’s the second largest Buddhist Monastery in the world. It administers over 17 gompas (Buddhist Temples) and houses about 300 monks.

{For more spiritual destinations, read:  Shravanabelagola  (Jainism) |||  Varanasi  (Hinduism) |||  Rishikesh  (Hinduism)}

tawang-monastery

As much as I had heard about the iconic monastery, it more than lived up to my expectations. The beautiful 3-storey building with typical colours used in Tibetan architecture- bright red, golden and blue just took my breath away! The paintings inside the monastery and the 28-feet high statue of the Buddha are quite  impressive as well. Besides, the monastery houses a museum with ancient scriptures and Buddhist artefacts.

tawang-museum

Apart from its religious importance, the monastery offers a breathtaking view of the Tawang Chu valley and the Tawang main town. On the other hand, the yellow roofs of the buildings in the monastery campus make it a visual feast as seen from main Tawang town.

The Giant Buddha Statue:

On a small hill in the Tawang Valley in Arunachal stands a giant Buddha statue; it’s about 30 feet high. While moving in and out of the town towards Bumla pass, one cannot really miss the view.

buddha-statue-tawang-valley

Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it gives a panoramic view of the Tawang Valley. We spent about half an hour there having an eye-full of the view.  Fluttering of the Buddhist prayer flags around the monument created some magical vibes.  When we visited the site, they were offering tea and food to visitors, which we happily accepted.

tawang-valley-arunachal

Urgelling Gompa:

One of the reasons why Tawang Valley in Arunachal is holy to the Buddhists is because it’s the birth place of their 6th Dalai Lama- H.H. Tsangyang Gyatso. In his memory, they have built a monastery there, just about 3 kms from the main town, Tawang.

As it’s away from the market place, and lies in the wilderness, the tranquility of the place is remarkable. One can hear the silence; I felt like I was experiencing peace and serenity at their best. The gompa has a simple yet lovable Tibetan architecture.

urgelling-gompa-tawang-valley-arunachal

Tawang War Memorial:

Apart from the holiness of the place, Tawang Valley in Arunachal is known for its history of tussle between India and China. China’s aggression in 1962 has left indelible scars, which can be seen all over the place. There are two War Memorials in the region: Tawang War Memorial in the town itself, and the other one is on the way to Sela pass- Jaswantgarh War Memorial.

The Tawang War Memorial is a 40 feet monument that resembles a stupa. The artefacts, maps, helmets, guns, etc used during the war kept at the memorial evoke emotional vibes. However, I especially liked the war stories presented in an organized manner.

tawang-war-memorial

Tawang Market:

Even though there were a large number of tourists in the town when we were there, the market didn’t seem crowded. The shops were relatively empty. Most of the shops sold beautiful ceramic products and Buddhist memorabilia. Parina wanted to shop some ceramics, but we decided against it, mainly because of logistics issues. But we did buy some Buddhist memorabilia.

ceramics-tawang-market-valley

Day-3: Tawang Valley to Bumla Pass

Actually Bumla pass and Shungetsar lake come on the same route from Tawang. About 22 kms north of Tawang, the route divides into two. While one goes up to Bumla pass, the other goes to Shungetsar lake. Both Bumla pass and Shungetsar lake are about 35 kms from Tawang.

However, following the advice of our driver, we decided to visit Bumla pass first. And I would suggest everyone to do the same. This is because it’s too cold and windy up there, and weather can get really rough in the afternoon.

Bumla Pass:

After Tawang monastery, perhaps Bumla pass is the most sought after place in Tawang Valley. At 15, 200 ft, it’s one of India’s highest passes, and the connecting point between India and China.

We wanted to start early in the morning, but couldn’t. Because it was so cold that we found it difficult to wake up early. Anyway, we started about 8 AM. Our driver had got the required permission from the local authority. On the way, there was only one check post to check the permissions.

The route to Bumla pass is absolutely picturesque with spectacular Himalayan vistas, brown-red landscapes, and gorgeous blue lakes. We came across at least 4-5 small and big lakes on the way. The most prominent lake among these was the  Panga Teng Tso lake .

panga-teng-tso-lake-tawang-valley-arunachal

The seasonal vegetation that had come up in Tawang Valley (towards Bumla Pass) during the summer, had already started dying because of the cold weather of October. Interestingly, the dying vegetation made the entire landscape to look red at many sections.

We reached the top of Bumla pass at about 10 AM, and stayed there for about an hour. The Army has a strict regulation for the tourists there. In fact, they make groups of tourists and guide them to the last accessible point. At the last point, they narrate some stories of 1962 war, and share some factual information of the border, and how it’s managed between India and China.

bumla-pass-tawang-valley-3

Shungetsar Lake / Madhuri Lake:

By the time we left Bumla pass around 11 AM, Parina had started feeling really bad, partly due to the cold related health issues, and partly because of high altitude related sickness. (Learn more:  Acute Mountain Sickness ). We started coming down quickly as she lay down in the car itself in the backseat.

In spite of her bad health, she asked me to proceed towards the Shungetsar lake. It was about 25 kms from Bumla pass; it took us about an hour to reach there, i.e. around 12 PM. For the last 4-5 kms, road was in really bad condition. Parina kept lying in the car; but I walked up to the beautiful lake.

shungetsar-lake-tawang-valley-arunachal (2)

The locals have started calling it Madhuri lake after the legendary Bollywood actress- Madhuri Dixit shot a movie (Koyla) scene here in 1997.  Spread across two mountains,  the lake really looked spectacular. And the dead tree trunks in the lake made the landscape look fascinating as well. The dead tree trunks are witness to an earlier period when the lake was a grazing ground with trees around. An earth quake in 1950 resulted in creation of the lake!

{Further reading on Himalayan lakes:  Nainital  ||| Dal lake in  Kashmir }

shungetsar-lake-tawang-valley-arunachal

As Parina wasn’t well, I had to return as quickly as possible from the site. And we headed back to Tawang without wasting any time. Reached Tawang around 2 PM.

Day-4: Tawang Valley- Sela Pass- Dirang- Bomdila

Next morning, we started a little late- around 10 AM. We had planned to reach Bomdila by the evening while covering at least three places on the way- Nuranang waterfall, Sela pass and Dirang monastery.

  • Tawang to Bomdila: 175 kms
  • Tawang to Nuranang waterfall: 30 kms
  • Nuranang to Sela pass: 40 kms
  • Sela pass to Dirang: 60 kms
  • Dirang to Bomdila: 45 kms

An interesting war story:

Among the many stories of Indo-China war, perhaps none is more compelling than the story of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat. When he was absolutely outnumbered against an advancing Chinese Army, he got help from the most unlikely source. Two local Monpa girls- Sela and Nura helped Jaswant Singh hold the fort for 3 days at one post. However, later the Chinese Army got hold of a supplier to know that there was only one Indian Army personnel fighting them! Afterwards, they didn’t take much time to kill Jaswant Singh and Sela, and captured Nura.

Today, there is a War Memorial in the name of Jaswant Singh ( Jaswantgarh War Memorial , on the way from Tawang to Sela pass) to pay him rich tributes. Besides, the said mountain pass is named after Sela, and a waterfall is named after Nura (Nuranang waterfall).

nuranang-waterfall-tawang-valley

Nuranang Waterfall:

At about 30 kms from Tawang towards Sela pass, there is this most beautiful waterfall- Nuranang waterfall (also known as Jang falls or Bong Bong falls) near Jang village. We reached at the waterfall by 11 AM. From the base location itself, the waterfall looked amazing! It’s about 100 meters steep hike down to the waterfall. Parina couldn’t do the hiking because of her back issues. So, I climbed down alone the steps to reach beneath the waterfall.

The water falls about 100 meters, flows about 100 meters before meeting the Tawang river. I spent about 30 minutes at the waterfall; getting wet in the gushing water beneath the waterfall was quite exciting.

We left the waterfall no later than 11.30 AM. and drove towards Sela pass, about 40 kms away. It was the most arduous patch of road on the entire Tawang- Bhalukpong route. The road became really bad as we came closer to the Sela pass; reached there around 1 PM.

sela-lake-tawang-valley

At 13, 700 feet (4170 mt) high, it’s one of India’s highest mountain passes, and connects  Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal. But more importantly, it offers absolutely jaw dropping views on either sides of the pass, on Tawang side and on West Kameng side. The Ladakh-like landscape is awe inspiring to say the least.

On Tawang side, the apex point boasts of the most scenic lake-  Sela lake . It’s one of the 101 sacred lakes  for Buddhists  around Sela pass. As we drove to the other side of the pass towards Dirang in West Kameng district, I must say, the barren landscapes became even more beautiful.

west-kameng-landscape

However, as we drove nearer to the town of Dirang, the barren landscapes slowly gave way to green forests down the mountain slopes.

After another 2 hours drive and a 30-minute lunch break, we reached Dirang around 4 PM, just before evening, but there was enough light to enjoy the picturesque Dirang town, and Dirang monastery.

Dirang is among the top tourist destinations/ hill stations in Arunachal; unlike Tawang Valley, it’s not as difficult to reach here. The Dirang river flowing calmly among the hills and small lovely villages with golden paddy fields made the landscape look gorgeous. Besides, the town perched across the hill slopes looked beautiful from a distance.

dirang-landscape

Though we visited only the Dirang monastery, there are a few more places of interest in and around Dirang: Sangti Valley || Dirang Djong (fort/ jail) || Mandala Top || Khastung Gompa.

After spending about half an hour over there, we left for Bomdila around 4.30 PM, and reached Bomdila about 6.30 PM.

Day-5: The return trip: Bomdila to Guwahati

Bomdila is a lovely town, the head quarters of West Kameng district of Arunachal. One can easily spend a few days of vacation in the cool town. As we were just spending a night there like a transit place on our way back to Guwahati, we didn’t have much time to explore the town. However, we carry back the view of the beautiful town that we had from the balcony of our hotel. Really wonderful view of the mountains overlooking the town! However, b efore leaving Bomdila, we made it a point to visit the beautiful Bomdila monastery.

We were looking for a public transport/ shared jeep to reach Bhalukpong from Bomdila. But there was none available. We got to know that there was only one bus that runs early in the morning, and seats in the shared jeep had to be booked at least one/ two days in advance! Since early morning was difficult for us, and we had not booked jeep seats in advance, we had to book a taxi to reach Bhalukpong and onward to Guwahati.

We left Bomdila for Bhalukpong around 11 AM. As we drove towards Bhalukpong, the mountains became more and more greener and denser. To make things even more interesting, waterfalls would appear out of nowhere, just outside our car-windows!

bomdila-bhalukpong-landscape

Bhalukpong:

We reached Bhalukpong, the border between Arunachal and Assam around 1.30 PM. Our taxi handed us over to another taxi, perhaps because of administrative reasons, or for ease of operation. It would have been too long a journey for one driver to drive from Bomdila to Guwahati and come back the same day!

Bhalukpong is where the mountains meet the plains. It’s a nice cute picnic location with the Kameng river flowing through the region. We noticed quite a large number of resorts and activity spots along the river, perhaps frequented mostly by tourists from Assam.

Tawang trip: Miscellaneous tips

How to plan:.

If you liked the itinerary that we followed, the above reading is a good plan for you. But I would suggest adding one more day in Dirang, and maybe a day in Bomdila. So, plan for 6-7 days for a relaxing trip. Plus, one may face permit issues/ weather issues too. So, keeping an additional day in hand is a good idea. It takes some effort to reach there, not easy to visit again and again. Thus, having enough time is crucial to enjoy, maybe the once in a lifetime kind of experience.

Best time to visit:

From weather point of view, Autumn (mid Sep to mid Nov) and Spring (mid Mar to mid Apr) are the best seasons to visit Tawang Valley in Arunachal. Tawang Festival is organized by Arunachal government in October every year; a great time to experience the culture of Tawang Valley. ( Read more:  Tawang Festival ). Though February would be too cold, Tibetan New Year- Losar falls in this month, and it’s another great time to experience Tibetan Buddhist culture.

How to reach:

Though there is an airport in Tezpur, one would find very few flight options. So, practically, Guwahati is the nearest airport, 435 kms away. From there, one has to take a bus or taxi to reach Tawang, depending on budget,  comfort level, and  availability of time.

The routes:   There are two distinct routes from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang Valley in Arunachal, via two different entry points. One route goes via Udalguri, Bhairabkunda, Balemu (entry point), Shergaon and Bomdila. The second one goes via Rangapara, Tezpur, Bhalukpong (entry point), and Bomdila.

Bus service is available only via the second route, i.e. via Bhalukpong entry point. But the first route is more scenic places to stopover (like Bhairabkund, Indo-Bhutan border and Shergaon). As taking taxi both ways is a costly affair, one may think of taking the bus to reach Tawang Valley, and taking a taxi via the other route on the way back.

Road condition:  Roads are mostly fine in Tawang Valley in Arunachal, except for some sections, especially near Sela pass.

Where to stay:

Budget hotel suggestions: Tawang Heights || Dewa Elegance || Zambhala hotel || Tourist Lodge Tawang (govt.) || Hotel Mon-Valley || Monyul Residency.

Hostels/ Guesthouses:   Dolma Khangsar Guesthouse || Tawang Homestay || Dondrub Homestay || Nawang from Tawang.

How to move around:

Taxi is the only way to move around in Tawang Valley in Arunachal. Taxis are not cheap; per day charge would be around Rs. 6000, like in most mountain destinations.

What/ where to eat:

  • Mostly Tibetan and Assamese/ Bengali cuisine are popular in Tawang.
  • Some suggestions: The Dragon || Dharma Coffee House || Northeast Flavors || Orange || Blue Pine || Sno-Yak || Woodland || Greenwood || GTK Kitchen.

Inner Line Permit:

As for most of the north eastern states, one needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Tawang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. Not to worry though, it’s easy to get one. Just head to the Arunachal government’s official website:  eILP-Arunachal . However, if you face any problems receiving your permit in time, ask agents in Guwahati upon your arrival; they will provide one for some nominal fees.

Importance of planning and preparation:

As they say, all good things come only after the hard work! This cannot be any more true for a trip to Tawang Valley in Arunachal; at least this is how we felt. Starting from reaching Tawang Valley, to moving around the sites, the weather and the budget, everything came at a lot a of effort or cost. But the rewards were amazing!

Parina faced some health issues, and I had to put in a lot of effort to keep her in good stead. She enjoyed a little less than me. But overall, it was a wonderful trip.

As stakes are high, planning is very important for a trip to Tawang Valley in Arunachal. Keep a day or two in hand, over and above the planned itinerary. Keep enough warm clothes, irrespective of the season. Book a good hotel with a warmer. Basically, ensure your stay to be comfortable to feel relaxed and be in good physical and mental health.

Concluding Thoughts

Future of tourism in tawang valley in arunachal:.

One blessing in disguise is that currently, because it’s difficult to reach the Tawang Valley in Arunachal, it’s still unspoiled. The air is pure, and the water is crystal clear. However, that’s going to change in not far future. Indian government is investing heavily in building road and other infrastructure to increase habitation as well as tourism in the region.

So, in coming days, it will become easier to reach Tawang Valley in Arunachal. As more and more tourists arrive there, it’s bound to get polluted. Here comes the role of government in promoting tourism in a sustainable manner. Further reading suggestion:  Government’s role in sustainable tourism .

Change in landscapes:

Before I wind up, did you notice one thing- the change in landscape from Tawang Valley to Bhalukpong  in Arunachal ? If you didn’t go back to the top, and have a relook. From barren cold-deserts to lush green forests, isn’t the gradual change remarkable!

Go fall in love with the pristine landscape!

Tawang is blessed with a number of monasteries, nunneries, stupas which gives it a very religious appearance, while at the same time there have been tremendous developments in the infrastructure lately. Frequently Asked Questions

Seasons in Tawang

  • Summer in Tawang - April to June is the summer time in the hills of Tawang and is ideal for sightseeing and exploring the town with April being the best month to visit Tawang. Owing to its altitude of 8,757 ft high even the summers are colder compared to other hill stations. The average temperature during this time of the year is 20 degree Celsius.
  • Monsoon in Tawang - July to August are the monsoon months in Tawang when the hillocks and Tawang valley carpeted in deep-green turn all the more lush and the crystal clear waters of Tawang Chu river glistens. The flowers on the rollings bloom in sundry shades of nature. The average temperature around these months is around 20 degree Celsius. The amount of showers received are moderate but in some cases can lead to not so favourable roads that might hamper your travel.
  • Winter in Tawang - November to February is when Tawang is at its chilliest with the average minimum temperature dipping to -18 degree Celsius. This season draws in the snow lovers with a caveat. The condition of the roads may not be too conducive to reach to a few places. In rare cases, roads are even blocked because of heavy snowfall. But if you are up for some thrill and can brave the harsh weather, then you would love living the icy Tawang experience.

What to know before a visit to Tawang

  • The very first step while planning a visit to Tawang is to get an Inner Line Permit which is a document allowing Indian citizens to enter the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Now, the next question is where and how to obtain this permit? Well, it’s a simple process. It can be applied online, through Arunachal state houses or travel agents. For the ones who made a last-minute plan to visit, they can get an on-arrival ILP. The Inner Line Permit is valid for 15 days.
  • The easiest and the most convenient way to obtain an Inner Line Permit of ILP is the website of the state tourism board. Usually, travellers get their ILPs on the same day within a few working hours. And in case your application is rejected you can re-apply and check the status of eILP. The documents required are any photo ID proof such as driving license, PAN card, passport, voter’s card, or Adhaar card along with a passport size photo.
  • Because of the remoteness of the region, the first thing that visitors think is how to reach Tawang as Arunachal Pradesh doesn’t have an airport of its own. So there are no flights to Tawang. The nearest airport from Tawang is Lilabari Airport in Assam connected with flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Tezpur by Alliance Air and SpiceJet. From Lilabari Airport it is only a 2-hour drive to Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • But the most accessible way to get to Tawang is through Tezpur. And that means you have to get to Assam first as it is the only Indian state that shares a border with Arunachal Pradesh. Take a flight to Guwahati, get out of the Guwahati Airport and get into a taxi to Tezpur from where your actual journey to Tawang will begin. The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is better connected with flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Agartala, Imphal and other domestic destinations by airlines such as SpiceJet, IndiGo, Air India. Meanwhile, the plans are on to roll out Hollongi Airport, which will be the first airport in Arunachal Pradesh and will be situated just 25 km from Itanagar, the state capital.
  • Another most singular aspect about travelling in Arunachal is that you can’t traverse from point A to B if your destination is not listed on the 12 tourist circuits. Let’s say you want to visit Anini from Tawang, you will have to go all the way back to the south close to the border of Assam and then pick the designated tourist route for the destination you want to go to. This is partly due to security reasons and lack of proper roads.

Festivals in Tawang

  • Tawang Festival - Pack your bags for Tawang during the three-day festival celebrating the culture of the tribes of Tawang. It kicks off with a traditional ceremony called Sebang marking the advent of the Buddhist monks from the town. Don’t forget to witness the main attraction of the festival - the Aji Lhamu dance. One of the interesting things to do in Tawang, the festival takes place during October so do accommodate it in your itinerary while you plan your holiday in Tawang.
  • Chosker-Monpa Festival - This is a religious festival and an important event in Tawang for the Monpa community where Buddhist priests do a round of readings of the Buddhist scriptures for days in the Gompa temple. After which a procession is held with people carrying the sacred books.

Tawang was the ultimate culture trip.

Not only do you get an unbeatable sense of achievement when you finally make it over the treacherous Sela Pass , you have this overwhelming wonderment wherever you go in this awe-inspiring Himalayan town.

Your jaw will drop at the peaks of the snow-capped mountains, the colours in the Buddhist monks robes and temples, the presence in the statues of Buddha.

The endless hospitality of the locals and the cuteness of the yaks (okay, maybe that’s just me!).

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the least visited states in India for tourism but I find this fact unbelievable. It’s literally Nirvana.

My little slice of heaven and it’s so unlike the rest of India. It’s fresh, untouched, pure.

It’s the perfect oasis for a getaway. So, I wanna shout about it! Here’s a list of stunning Tawang photos for your visit!

Where is Tawang in North East India?

Tawang and the district of Tawang are hidden away in Arunachal Pradesh in North East India. So, it’s no wonder you’re wanting to see some Tawang photos before you visit.

Sandwiched in between Bhutan and South Tibet (China), it has an amazing mix of cultures and traditions that are waiting for you!

As a foreign tourist, you will need to gain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter the state of Arunachal Pradesh itself. For Indian tourists, you will need an (ILP) Inner Line Permit for your visit.

For tours of Arunachal Pradesh, I would highly recommend Holiday Scout.

Not only is the founder, Sage Tsering, voted one of the top 50 people to know in the Himalayas by Condé Nast Traveller , but he’s also extremely passionate and knowledgeable about this part of the world.
