Over the past 14 years, critics have struggled to classify The Heliocentrics ’s sound, which pulls jazz, soul, and funk into one mix, traversing the spectrum of psychedelic library music. Though the band formed in 2004, their aesthetic lands somewhere in the mid ’70s, when the tenets of these genres started blending to create a new, almost indiscernible vibration. Co-founded by bassist Jake Ferguson and drummer-producer Malcolm Catto , the group formed out of their respective solo projects. Ferguson helmed a collective called Nesta; Catto recorded under the name Popcorn Bubble Fish . Then one day, Ferguson asked Catto to play live drums on a track he’d been working on. It became a tune called “ Winter Song ,” which was released as a seven-inch in 2005 via Jazzman Records . A stripped-down version of the track appeared on the Heliocentrics’s debut album, 2007’s Out There . Equally indebted to Can, Miles Davis, Sun Ra (the band takes their name from 1965’s The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra ), contemporary classical, folk, post-punk, drone rock, and solo instrument/spoken-word records, one of music’s most cosmically-inclined groups was set for takeoff.

Out There was well-received by critics and listeners, even if few quite knew what it was. By funneling disparate sounds into their music, they pulled more fans into their orbit. “Jake and I have always been very proactive over the years in finding and sharing any new inspiring music we have found, either from digging for records while on tour or by spending hours searching online via YouTube,” Catto says. “So as the Heliocentrics, we drew upon all of our influences and incorporated them into our music, considering this the only way we could realistically come up with a sound that was fairly original, relevant, and that represented us.”

The album’s success allowed them to play a few live shows and record a live BBC Radio session for Gilles Peterson , the noted DJ, producer, and label owner . Out There arrived long before psychedelic rock and jazz was once again viable in the mainstream, and for much of their career, the Heliocentrics have operated just below the surface. But in an era where like-minded artists are breaking through, and challenging art isn’t the sole provenance of the underground, the Heliocentrics’s catalog is primed for broader discovery. They’ve always maintained a cratediggers’s spirit, and more people are coming around to their music. “I guess if there is one lesson we have learned from our years of digging, it is that there is rarely any correlation between an artist’s contribution and their commercial success,” Catto says. “We have never courted popularity or tried to make what we do more accessible, and would probably make just the same music regardless of whether it was in the charts or if we were the only ones who liked it. I think writing songs and having a singer has maybe widened our appeal a little, but then again some people preferred us when we were strictly an instrumental band. As our tastes change, naturally, so does our music. And if a band doesn’t evolve somehow then I question the point of them continuing to make music.”

They’ve also done collaborative albums with a litany of legends in spiritual and Ethiopian jazz, highlife, and film. On each record, the band has tweaked their sound to accompany the featured artist, deferring to them without receding from view. Many of these recordings are on Bandcamp, except 2013’s 13 Degrees of Reality and 2014’s The Last Transmission with Melvin Van Peebles, but there’s still plenty to explore. Here, Catto walks us through the making and creative focus of some of the Heliocentrics’s solo and collaborative albums.

Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics Inspiration Information 3

the heliocentrics tour dates

“The Mulatu album came about by sheer fluke when an employee of Stones Throw over here in the U.K. happened to play Out There in an office he was then sharing with promoter/producer Karen P. She was working on bringing Mulatu over to the U.K. for a one-off concert and looking for musicians to back him. After hearing our record, she thought that we should be able to do as decent a job of it as any other band around. Luckily we did, and after that first show we suggested to an elated Mulatu the idea of doing a record together, who, along with Quinton Scott—our friend and owner of Strut Records —were both interested in releasing a potential Mulatu/Heliocentrics collaboration. The resulting Inspiration Information album was the closest thing we have ever done which generated any hint of a ‘zeitgeist’ moment or of us being ‘en vogue.’ This was due mainly to Mulatu’s ‘70s music just being featured heavily in a Hollywood movie , and we suddenly found ourselves going from playing to around 40 to 1,500 people. We toured that album extensively for several years (to the point where we can no longer listen to certain Mulatu tracks, such as ‘ Yèkèrmo Sèw ,’ as we have played it so many times live.”

Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics (OST)

the heliocentrics tour dates

“This was at a time when new ‘jazz’ releases still suffered from ‘90s fallout and dodgy connotations with the fairly grim live ‘acid jazz’ scene, unlike now, where it is part of the mainstream and trendy again. We had worked briefly with Lloyd earlier for another Jazzman release and knew he was a super talented old-school jazz maestro who played a ton of interesting instruments. Unfortunately, we were slightly misled on how that session was to go down and were promised that Lloyd was super easygoing and would be open-minded to anything that we would come up with. Also for [label owner] Gerald [Short] to secure the session with Lloyd, he must have exaggerated our still-limited jazz chops, so much so that Lloyd initially had very high expectations from us. Jake and I soon realized we were in way over our heads when at first he wanted us to play straight-up ‘50s-Miles-Davis-influenced bebop. Later on, in an interview about that session, he would refer to us as ‘London rockers.’ Miraculously though, we did get something together out of that first session that was actually releasable; we eventually found some common ground between us through our mutual love of ethnic music and modal jazz. We also saw how quickly Lloyd could overdub multiple ethnic instruments on top of the three backing tracks we had managed to salvage and transform them into something considerably more alluring.

“Lloyd was always amusingly openly very critical of the album while we were recording it, but opened up a lot to us as the sessions progressed. Lloyd’s pet hate is The Beatles, who he claims effectively ruined music in 1960, and for me, I think his funniest quote was about ‘ Mandala ,’ which is a kind of jazzy/psych track with sitar and a strong Indian influence. When I played Lloyd an early mix of it and asked him what he thought, his dry response was that ‘it sounds like every Beatles record ever made played together at the same time.’

“Lloyd would not allow us to use any effects (besides some reverb) or any electric instruments on the album (referring to Ade [Owusu]’s guitar as ‘slutty wah wah’), but because of this and Lloyd’s strong personality, I guess it is a true collaboration in the sense that neither him or us are really happy with it.”

Orlando Julius with The Heliocentrics Jaiyede Afro

the heliocentrics tour dates

“Orlando Julius, by contrast, was the most easygoing, laid-back, humble man on the planet but no less talented. We always try to do the best we can (as self-taught players) when working with an artist out of 100% respect for them and their music. But unlike with Mulatu or Lloyd, I was not actually aware of Orlando’s credentials or familiar with his music when Quinton first contacted me with the idea of the Helios backing him for a new album. After I checked him out and his ‘70s catalog, I of course took Quinton’s arm off to do it. When we recorded Jaiyede Afro , we didn’t really have a handle on the African swing/feel, but I think we finally got something much closer to it through touring extensively with OJ and getting to play alongside some of Fela’s seasoned Africa 70 musicians and other amazing African players.”

From The Deep

the heliocentrics tour dates

“From The Deep is basically an EP of various outtakes accumulated over the years that we liked but that didn’t fit onto any of the Helios albums at the time, plus a couple of new tracks we had lying around.”

A World of Masks

the heliocentrics tour dates

“ A World of Masks was our first album with our singer Barbora Patkova and saw us starting to veer away from just purely improvising and start to form rudimentary songs. We had moved to the London-based Soundway Records for this release and it was to be the last album we recorded with long-term band members and friends Ade Owusu on guitar and Tom Hodges on electronics and second guitar, as they both left to pursue other projects.”

The Sunshine Makers OST

the heliocentrics tour dates

“The Sunshine Makers was a film telling the story about the two main LSD manufacturers in late ‘60s California, Tim Scully and Nicholas Sand, and the very different personal motives they had for taking the risks they did. We had been told that we were in the running to do a soundtrack for this film very early on in the selection process, but then as equally early on, we were also told that we had been eliminated—I guess for sounding too psychedelic, as this was not what the producer was after at all. Then out of the blue many weeks later, we got a call from the music advisor for the film, Gary Welch, who had put our name in the hat originally. He asked us to come up with the music for the ‘ trip scene ’ of the movie where Tim drops his first tab of acid. The catch was that we needed to submit it the next day, so we worked through the night until 8 a.m. the next day—writing, playing, and recording the music for this long and important segment of the film.

The film’s director, Cosmo Feilding-Mellen, generally wanted more composed pieces of music to match the mood that the scenes conveyed. Me and Jake had been playing improvised music nearly continuously for a decade, so we had to kickstart the other half of our brains to start coming up with some decent melody heads, etc. Anything too obviously psychedelic was passed over in favor of dark and moody acoustic tracks with strings. Although a real challenge, we really enjoyed it and it forced us to write together and made us realize that due to the complexity of various emotions or scenarios in a single scene, that you could have various seemingly unrelated segments in a single track. It also made a great change to get paid decently to just make music and come up with ideas.”

Infinity Of Now

the heliocentrics tour dates

“Infinity of Now saw us with the same lineup as above, minus Sylvia Hallet on hurdy gurdy and sarangi, [delving] further down the path of written and structured material. The tracks are, for the most part, songs we had been performing live and constantly tweaking until we could live with playing them regularly at shows, and were recorded all together live without much in the way of overdubs. This album was also meant to have gone out on Soundway , but when I sent label owner and colleague, Miles Cleret, the finished tracks, he answered saying that he really liked some of the ideas on the demo and looked forward to hearing the finished thing—and P.S., are there any radio singles?

We took this to mean that perhaps he was not really feeling it, so it remained unreleased until one day when randomly [ Now-Again Records owner] Egon [Alapatt] and Madlib swung by our studio unexpectedly, as they were in town. They asked to hear what we had been up to, so I played them the proposed LP and told them about Miles’s initial response, to which Madlib casually announced that he would put it out on his new label and did.”

Telemetric Sounds

the heliocentrics tour dates

“The bulk of Telemetric Sounds was made up from one spontaneous improvisation during a recording session for the Infinity of Now album. It happened when Barbora and Jack went out for a 45-minute break to get a falafel each. We were all frustrated after doing take after take of a track on Infinity , and those left behind, in a bid for some group musical freedom, all launched into one evolving 45-minute mega jam from literally the moment they left until the moment they came back through the door—just as we struck the last notes of ‘ Left to our own devices .’”

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth largest city in Russia with a population exceeding 1.2 million. The city is located at the confluence of two rivers - the Volga and Oka. It is the center of Nizhny Novgorod region and Volga Federal District, as well as one of the country’s major administrative, economic and cultural centers.

Furthermore, Nizhny Novgorod is the Russia’s largest industrial center with the enterprises of mechanical engineering, metalworking information technology playing a leading role.

Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich to protect Russian borders. Under Ivan III, Nizhny Novgorod was a sentry city. It had a regular army. This was the place for Moscow to march against Kazan.

Nizhny Novgorod made a great contribution to the construction of the Russian state. In 1612, Kuz’ma Minin and Prince Dmistry Pozharsky’s militia from Nizhny Novgorod played a decisive role in the liberation of Moscow from Polish intervention.

During the Soviet period from 1932 to 1990, the city was named after Maxim Gorky, the Great Russian writer who was born there. From 1959 to 1991 it was a “forbidden” city for foreigners because of defense plants, located there. On October 22, 1990 the city got its former name, and about at the same time, it began developping tourist business.

Today, the city, once playing such a significant role in the history of Russia, is developed into a modern metropolis. So, the urban development plan intends to build a metro bridge, cableway, funicular, and a new branched transport infrastructure there. Furthermore, Nizhny Novgorod is the Russia’s largest center of river cruise tourism and venue of Nizhny Novgorod fair-based major international exhibitions.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the richest cultural centers of Russia. The most prominent artists have received education in the local theater and art schools. The city has opened a large number of theaters, museums and cinemas.

This city can surprise any traveler by an entwinement of modern and ancient buildings, each time rising before your eyes in a completely unexpected appearance.

Aerosmith announces rescheduled Peace Out farewell tour: New concert dates and ticket info

the heliocentrics tour dates

Aerosmith will be back in the saddle again this fall.

The veteran rockers, who postponed their Peace Out farewell tour after only a few shows in September, will return for a 40-date run starting Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh. The tour wraps Feb. 26, 2025 in Buffalo, NY.

The bulk of the dates are rescheduled, but the band added three cities: Pittsburgh, Orlando and Philadelphia, where their goodbye run kicked off last September.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, while tickets for the new shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time April 12 via ticketmaster.com . For those who previously purchased tickets and cannot attend the rescheduled concerts, refunds will be available at point of purchase. A series of VIP packages are also available at aerosmith.com/VIP.

As with the original dates, The Black Crowes will open for Aerosmith.

More: Aerosmith Peace Out: See the setlist for the iconic band's farewell tour

Why did Aerosmith postpone their farewell tour?

After playing only a handful of concerts in September, the “Walk This Way” heroes had to hit pause after singer Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords. He also fractured his larynx and was given doctor’s orders not to sing for 30 days.

But Aerosmith opted to give Tyler ample time to recuperate and scuttle all of their shows until 2024.

The wiry frontman known for his searing rock yowls, said at the time that the injury occurred at a Sept. 10 show in New York and that the vocal cord damage “led to subsequent bleeding.”

What songs can fans expect to hear at Aerosmith’s farewell shows?

USA TODAY was there for opening night of the Peace Out tour Sept. 3 in Philadelphia. As the tour is also a celebration of the band’s 50 years in the music industry, the setlist reflected their vast catalog.

The band – Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton and guitarist Brad Whitford, along with drummer John Douglas filling in for Joey Kramer – sounded in peak form for their deserved victory lap.

Songs ranged from singalong rock smashes “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Rag Doll” to the rarely played album track “Adam’s Apple” and a dip into Aerosmith’s blues roots with “Hangman Jury.”

Aerosmith Announce Rescheduled Dates for Peace Out Farewell Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Aerosmith have announced rescheduled dates for their Peace Out farewell tour, which was suspended in September 2023 because Steven Tyler fractured his larynx. This new leg kicks off Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh and wraps up Feb. 26 in Buffalo, New York. They’ll once again be joined by the Black Crowes.

The band announced plans to wrap their career with one final tour in May 2023, but they played a mere three shows before Tyler severely hurt his larynx. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” he wrote in a message to fans. “I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Aerosmith relaunches Peace Out farewell tour, will play Detroit in January

the heliocentrics tour dates

Aerosmith's rebooted farewell tour will bring the iconic rock band to Little Caesars Arena on Jan. 4 for its final Detroit concert.

The Black Crowes remain aboard to open the show, just as they were when the tour was initially announced in May 2023.

Eighteen months after front man Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury that derailed the band’s much-hyped goodbye outing, Aerosmith has announced its return to the road, starting with a Sept. 20 show in Pittsburgh and wrapping with a Feb. 26 show in Buffalo.

Aerosmith's Jan. 4 show in Detroit will follow the band's New Year's Eve concert in Boston, where Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry and company formed in 1970 before going on to rise up the rock ranks with a gritty and bluesy sound that produced hits such as “Walk This Way,” “Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion.”

The LCA show, originally scheduled for Sept. 18, 2023, was shifted to January 2024 when Tyler sustained vocal damage early in the tour. Weeks later, the entire farewell run was delayed indefinitely when the singer was diagnosed with a more serious fractured larynx.

Fans who held on to tickets for that original Detroit date are good to go. Any open seats will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster.

Aerosmith announces new dates for 2024 farewell tour 'Peace Out,' headed to Nashville

A erosmith has announced the rescheduled 2024 dates for their farewell 'Peace Out Tour.' The tour, which was originally set to come to Nashville in January 2024, was postponed due to singer Steven Tyler's vocal cord damage.

The band will now hit the stage at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Sunday, Oct. 20.

The band has released 15 studio albums, with their most recent released in 2012, "Music From Another Dimension!"

Aerosmith has announced that The Black Crowes, comprised of brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , will accompany them on tour. The Black Crowes released their first album in 15 years, "Happiness Bastards," on March 14.

Why did Aerosmith postpone their final tour?

Aerosmith first announced that they would be embarking on their final tour via video in May 2023. The tour began on Sept. 3 in Philadelphia.

The band, though, was forced to cancel remaining tour dates after frontman Steven Tyler suffered an injury at their performance on Sept. 9 in at the UBS Arena in New York.

Tyler suffered a vocal injury that included a fractured larynx and vocal cord damage.

In a Sept. 29 statement on Facebook , the band promised to honor tickets for new dates. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” Tyler said.

“I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Now, the rescheduled farewell tour will start back up on Sept. 20 in Pennsylvania, celebrating Aerosmith's hits from over 50 years together as a band.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows. Ticket-holders will receive more information via email.

Tickets for the newly announced shows, both rescheduled and added performances, will go on sale on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. CST at  ticketmaster.com .

The Top 12 Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Take a first-rate trip to Russia's fifth city

Ershov_Maks/Getty Images

Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!

Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers

Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.

Climb Russia's Longest Staircase

Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.

Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo

One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.

Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.

Sun Yourself at the Spit

Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.

Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."

Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car

Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.

Taste Traditional Shchi Soup

Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.

Survey Amazing Russian Orthodox Architecture

Think the only amazing Russian Orthodox churches are in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Think again. Nizhny Novgorod boasts several amazing examples of Russian Orthodox architecture. From the brilliant golde domes John the Baptist Cathedral near the Volga River, to the expansive grounds of 14th-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Nizhny Novgorod is an architecture buff's dream!

Take a Look Back in Time

Nizhny Novgorod's historical center is relatively large and well-preserved, but a stroll (or 10) through it isn't the only way to get a feel for the city's centuries-long past. Head to the Russian Museum of Photography, which not only showcases a variety of images of Nizhny Novgorod that date back a century or even longer, but also spotlights the equipment Russian photographers have used throughout the years, and notable figures in Russia's photography history as well.

Visit the Convent from the Movie "Salt"

You'd be forgiven if you've entirely forgotten the 2010 film "Salt." However, if you remember any destination from this spy thriller, it's likely the facade of Makaryev Convent, which is located within day-trip distance of Nizhny Novgorod. Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.

Take an Excursion to a 12th-Century Tea Town

Another worthwhile day trip from Nizhny Novgorod is to the town of Gorodets, which sits about an hour to its northwest. With a history dating back to the 12th century, Gorodets boasts an interesting array of architecture and museums, including one dedicated to samovars.
