Detroit Jazz Festival unveils 2024 artist lineup, led by artist-in-residence Brian Blade
The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation on Wednesday announced the artist lineup for the 2024 Detroit Jazz Festival (DJF), which will be held in downtown Detroit on Labor Day weekend. As always, this festival will remain free to attend, and is, in fact, the world’s largest jazz festival that offers free entry.
Drummer, composer and bandleader Brian Blade was previously named the festival's 2024 Artist-in-Residence; he and his Fellowship Band will headline the festival.
Details were revealed in an invite-only preview event Wednesday evening, featuring a performance by Blade and The Fellowship Band, as well as the One-World Jazz Orchestra, a collaboration between the Berklee Global Jazz Institute and Wayne State University’s jazz program.
The event also served as a sneak peek at the new Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center on the campus of Wayne State. It’s scheduled to open to the public this fall.
“This year’s lineup reflects a very dynamic and eclectic combination of next generation and legacy jazz musicians who reflect the diverse tapestry of jazz and its evolutions,” said Chris Collins, president and artistic director of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation. “We look forward to their energy and craftsmanship on our stages and seeing our faithful jazz fans in downtown Detroit on Labor Day weekend.”

Cruise to the Edge 2024: Review
T he former King Crimson dudes couldn’t catch a break on Cruise to the Edge 2024, which sailed March 8-13. Still, it didn’t stop them from spreading the warm glow of prog on a cruise ship crammed with nerdy, obsessive fans often satisfied just seeing their idols peruse the buffet options.
At the Stardust Theater, the classiest venue on a Norwegian cruise ship sailing from Miami to Cozumel, Adrian Belew led his reliable trio through classic Crim finger-breakers and mood-shifting solo cuts — and he beamed generously from the stage throughout, even though his guitar malfunctioned through a sizable chunk of the set. Days later at the pool stage, Belew’s tech issues were even more aggressive: Between still-uproarious takes on “Frame By Frame” and “Young Lions,” the band scrambled for solutions that involved fresh batteries and compressor-pedal swaps.
Finally, a moment of collective transcendence bubbled up during the encore: Belew’s former Crimson bandmate Tony Levin — also onboard with his own trio, Stick Men — walked through the evening breeze to thunderous applause, carrying his trusted low-end machine, the Chapman Stick. But the tech problems seemed to linger during Discipline anthem “Elephant Talk” — you couldn’t hear his signature funky riff at all, at least toward the front of the crowd. (If only we could have located the retirement-age dude wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “I Fix Stuff, and I Know Things.” This was his time to shine!)
There’s another sad irony here: During Stick Men’s set a couple days prior, Levin was forced to sit out entirely, his instrument having been somehow sent to the wrong storage area. (Keyboardist Adam Holzman admirably stepped in for a unique, more jazz-leaning set seemingly heavy on improv.) But again, even seeing these giants together onstage, doing their best to hammer out a prog staple, meant something to everyone in their presence.
But Cruise to the Edge isn’t strictly a nostalgia machine, even if it routinely churns out plenty. A perfect example is Steve Hackett : During his co-headlining Stardust set, the former Genesis guitarist continued to maneuver through that band’s epics (including a version of the 23-minute “Supper’s Ready” that nearly left one guy in the balcony with whiplash); but he also played a smattering of new solo tracks, and even the old stuff had a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of some clever arrangements (partly thanks to woodwind player Rob Townshend).
And the lineup has only grown more diverse — in terms of age and style — over the years. One minute, you could soak in the medieval folk-prog stylings of Gryphon, who once opened for Yes in the ’70s; the next, you could bask in the modern prog-metal majesty of Haken or the open-armed, symphonic-scale beauty of Big Big Train. (The latter’s theater show, part of the veteran band’s first-ever U.S. tour, was among the cruise’s obvious highlights — from the violin-led churn of “Folklore” through the tear-streaked grandeur of “Victorian Brickwork.”)
Loving prog in the 21st century often makes you feel like an outcast. Because of that fact, Cruise to the Edge still feels like some kind of weird sanctuary — one that will hopefully continue to evolve with that loosely defined genre itself. In 2024, no amount of annoyance — from technical glitches to mansplaining collectors at the lounge bar — could dampen the soothing strains of Minimoog.

British armoured vehicles seized in Ukraine have been placed on display in Moscow city centre.
A Saxon armoured personnel carrier was seen alongside a German Leopard tank in the city's Victory Park.
The open-air space is usually used as a commemoration of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany at the end of World War Two.
However, the museum has been transformed into a glorification of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The month-long exhibit will also feature an American Bradley tank , a Swedish CV90 and a French-made AMX-10RC armoured fighting vehicle.
The captured vehicles were displayed beneath red banners reading "Our victory is inevitable" and are described as a celebration of Russia's success "against Ukrainian militants and their Western supporters."
Opening to visitors on May 1, the exhibition will run alongside Moscow's Red Square Victory Day Parade on May 9 in commemoration of the Soviet's victory against the Nazis.

It comes as Ukrainian President Volodmir Zelensky issued a fresh plea to the international community to deliver more air defences, start formal talks for his country to enter the European Union, and invite Ukraine to join Nato.

The eight days at the Fair Grounds during the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival are the main, but not the only, event. Local venues, from Chickie Wah Wah’s “Fest-O-Matic” series to Café Istanbul’s “Nightfest,” are jam-packed over the next 11 nights with special performances featuring local and visiting artists, often in unique combinations you won’t see any other time of the year. Check the online listings for individual clubs.
Meanwhile, here is a sampling of noteworthy shows taking place across the first week of Jazz Fest.
THE KILLERS
Thursday, Tipitina’s
Modern rock band the Killers typically headlines arenas, and will close out Jazz Fest’s main stage on Friday. But first, singer Brandon Flowers and his bandmates will warm up with an “underplay” at the 750-capacity Tipitina’s, in a concert promoted by AEG, the co-promoter of Jazz Fest. Good luck getting tickets.
'THREADHEAD THURSDAY' WITH PAPA MALI’S SHANTYTOWN UNDERGROUND
Thursday, City Park Botanical Garden
The Threadheads are a group of Jazz Fest fans who launched a record label after Hurricane Katrina to help New Orleans musicians release more music. The group’s 14th annual “Threadhead Thursday” show offers a chance to chill after the first day of the festival with guitarist Papa Mali’s hybrid New Orleans rhythm and blues/reggae band Shantytown Underground. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is suggested to benefit City Park. Food and drink are available for purchase. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.
THE NEVILLES PRESENT 'BAYOU BY BUS'

'LOUISIANA CALLING' WITH SONNY LANDRETH

Southwest Louisiana guitar wizard Sonny Landreth holds down the early, 8 p.m. slot Thursday to Saturday with his “Louisiana Calling” series. On Thursday, he shares the stage with the Iguanas. On Saturday, he’s with Tommy McLain and CC Adcock. On Saturday, he jams with Roddie Romero and Michael Juan Nunez.

It’s a big night of blues-based guitar at the Fillmore with Samantha Fish, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tab Benoit and Eric Gales, plus Sierra Green & the Giants.

Saturday, Music Box Village
The legendary contemporary jazz-funk ensemble, anchored by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark, celebrates the band’s 50th anniversary with special guests Stanton Moore, Yusa, Wil Blades and more. The venue, a “village” consisting of structures made from reclaimed materials that emit sounds, is part of the attraction. It’s tucked away at 4557 N. Rampart St., in the 9th Ward next to the St. Claude Avenue bridge crossing the Industrial Canal.
TAKE ME TO THE RIVER ALLSTARS

Bassist Robert Mercurio of Galactic is the music director for this performance based on the documentary of the same name. Announced guests include Big Freedia; Tarriona “Tank” Ball, of Tank & the Bangas; Paul Janeway, of St. Paul & the Broken Bones; and Marcus King, but other big names always show up.

The all-star cast of singers and musicians includes Broadway veterans Bryan Batt and Michael Cerveris, Shamarr Allen, Debbie Davie, Kimberly Kaye, Tanya Boutte, Matt Perrine, Mark Mullins, Alex McMurray and more.
WWOZ PIANO NIGHT
Monday, House of Blues
Piano players rarely ever play together, except during community radio station WWOZ-FM’s long-running benefit concert held on the Monday night between Jazz Fest weekends. This year's show features 28 ivory-ticklers.
SHORTY FEST
Monday, Tipitina’s
Shorty Fest is Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews’ annual benefit for his educational foundation. The free outdoor block party, with brass bands, school marching bands, Mardi Gras Indians and family-friendly activities, starts at 5 p.m. The ticketed indoor show starts at 8 p.m. and includes performances by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic featuring Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, the Sun Ra Arkestra and students from the Trombone Shorty Academy; tickets start at $125.
NOLA CRAWFISH FESTIVAL
Monday-Wednesday, The Broadside
The three-day Crawfish Festival at the outdoor Broadside on North Broad Street is as much about music as mudbugs. Monday’s lineup includes Eric Krasno & Friends featuring special guests Ivan, Neville, Tony Hall, Raymond Weber and Anders Osborne, plus Kabow!, the Iko Allstars and Zita. Tuesday’s bill features Tab Benoit, the Lost Bayou Ramblers with Luther Dickinson, Rumplesteelskin featuring pedal steel guitarist Ed Williams and other members of the Revivalists and Dave Jordan’s Almost Acoustic Trio. Wednesday’s bill boasts Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen paying tribute to Snooks Eaglin, George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners, John Boutte and the River Eckert Band. Go to www.nolacrawfishfest.com for info and tickets.
ZILDJIAN JAM
Tuesday, Tipitina’s
The first Zildjian Jam, named for the popular brand of cymbals, during last year’s Jazz Fest was such a hit — no pun intended — that organizers brought it back for a second year. The afternoon show starts at 3 p.m. and features a who’s who of percussion, including Herlin Riley; Andrew Campanelli and PJ Howard, of the Revivalists; Stanton Moore, of Galactic; Nikki Glasper; Jamison Ross; Eddie Christmas; Joe Dyson; Taku Hirano; and Pedro Segundo. The Z-Jam Band features Ivan and Ian Neville and saxophonist Skerik.
DAZE BETWEEN NEW ORLEANS
Tuesday-Wednesday, Faubourg Brewery
The two-day mini-festival occupies the grounds of Faubourg Brewery, just over the Industrial Canal high rise as you drive east. The Tuesday lineup includes Lettuce with special guest John Scofield, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Krasno/Moore Project, Dogs in a Pile, Cool Cool Cool and the Rumble. The Wednesday roster is topped by Gov’t Mule with special guests John Scofield, Chuck Leavell, Ivan Neville, Karl Denson, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Daniel Donato. Rounding out Wednesday’s bill are Galactic featuring Jelly Joseph, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, Karina Rykman and the Iceman Special.
