History of theni.

Theni District was formed by the bifurcation from the former Madurai District as per G.O. Ms. No. 679 Revenue Department dated July 7, 1996. Bodi Ammapatti is the notable village in Theni district. Consequent to the bifurcation, one new Revenue Division with headquarters at Uthamapalayam and two new Taluks at Theni and Bodinayakanur were also created with effect from January 1, 1997. Theni Municipal town was only a firka headquarters until December 31, 1996. Consequent to the formation of the new District, Theni Municipal Town was upgraded as the Taluk and District headquarters on January 1, 1997. The region covered by present-day Theni District was sparsely populated before the 1900s. In 1886 Mullaperiyar dam project bought some part of the water from Periyar River downhill to the Cumbum Valley and merged it into the Mullayar River. This project helped more people to settle down in Cumbum Valley. Also to be noted that Theni was itself was a small though lesser-known town by the 1900s. After the Mullay-Periyaar merger project lots of people from nearby dry arid regions (Sivakasi, Kovilpatti, Virudhunagar, Sattur and several nearby towns) settled in Cumbum-Valley (present day Theni District). So there was influx of people by the 1890s to 1920s. Bodi and Periyakulam were famous places at that time. Theni District is a district of Tamil Nadu state in South India.Theni district is Located beside Madurai , The town of Theni is the district headquarters. The district is divided into two natural divisions: The hilly areas are constituted by parts of the three taluk's Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam and Andipatti with thick vegetation and perennial streams from the hills on the western side and Cumbum valley which lies in Uthamapalayam taluk, Theni district had a population of 1,245,899 with a sex-ratio of 980 females for every 1,000 males.

Best Time to Visit Theni

Unlike its south Indian counterparts, the weather of Theni is somewhat salubrious for a substantial part of the year. However, winters and the onset of summers are the ideal time to visit Theni. The weather during this time happens to be the best with cooler temperature ranging between 18° Celsius and 22° Celsius. The months of December to February make the best possible travel adventures in Theni. While the summer and monsoons do attract some travellers, the number is less owing to the hot and humid climate.

Summers in Theni range from end of February till end of May and are characterised by very hot and humid climate. Since temperatures range from roughly 35° Celsius to 39° Celsius, it makes exploring around the town near a bit uncomfortable. Though some enthusiastic travellers still visit Theni during this time, the percentage is pretty much less.

Just like pan-India, monsoons in Theni range from June end till early September. Monsoons in Theni experience moderate to heavy rainfall and thus the humidity levels go up to substantially. Devadanapatti

Yet another small village located very close to Theni, Davadanapatti is famous for a Hindu shrine namely, Kamakshi Amman Temple. The term Devadanapatti means 'village gifted to God'. Located on the banks of the Manjal River, the temple's presiding deity happens to be Mariamman, a form of Shakti. One of the most unique aspect of the temple happens to be its 'closed doors' behind which the sanctum sanctorum is stationed. Periyakulam

Kumbakkarai Falls

Several domestic airlines ply to Madurai from all major Indian cities on daily basis. Once you have reached the Madurai airport, reaching Theni becomes an easy affair. Travellers can easily avail buses, cabs and other modes of transport to reach up to Theni.

Theni can be reached by train as well. Even this somewhat lesser-known jewel in Tamil Nadu has its own railway station. Trains from major cities in Tamil Nadu are available for Theni including Madurai, Chennai and Coimbatore. If you are travelling from places like Bengaluru or Kolkata, you may take a train to the above-mentioned cities in Tamil Nadu and then hop on to another train to Theni.

Travelling to Theni by road is also a great idea. An extensive network of roads lead to this beautiful place called Theni and since road conditions in the region are just too good, driving (often self-drive) can also be a great idea. Chennai to Theni, the distance is roughly 500 kilometres and one needs to take National Highway (NH) 45 in order to arrive at this district town. If you are travelling from Madurai to Theni you need to take NH 47 and on the other hand, travellers coming from Coimbatore, they need to take NH 183.

Thekkady is located about 80 km from Theni, 151 km from Madurai City and Madurai Airport, 145 km from Cochin International Airport Thekkady is located near by to Kerala Idukki -Theni Tamil Nadu border. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs.The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 777 km, of which 360 km is thick evergreen forest. The wildlife sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1978.The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attractions of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants, deer and bison that come down to drink in the lake. The sanctuary can be accessed by trekking, boating or jeep safari.
