3. Blue Banana Market

Shop, Store

Located in the vibrant west-end neighborhood of Roncesvalles, Scout is a cozy independent gift boutique that specializes in local, independent, and handmade goods. You can find products that include hand-stitched pillows, natural bath and body products, wood-carved jewelry, key chains, cards, and much more. The shop opened in 2011, and in 2016, Scout opened their online store.

6. Likely General

Also in Roncesvalles, Likely General takes its model from old-fashioned general stores in the days of yore. You can browse creative accessories, apparel, floral objects, paper and textile goods, and apothecary items. They also host various workshops, events, and exhibitions that take place in the small gallery in the back of the shop.

• Sukoshi Mart

If the person you’re shopping for is into cute and quirky things, you should definitely pop into Sukoshi Mart.

This adorable shop carries Asian lifestyle products, beauty and skincare products, and other kawaii bits and bobs.

You’ll find all kinds of unique items at Sukoshi Mart, like these Pokemon night lights , this bubble tea plushie , or this mushroom rug .

In particular, you’ll find a lot of anime and character merch, including Sanrio and Rilakkuma!

You can visit their mall locations at the Eaton Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, Fairview Mall, Square One, or Markville Mall, or you can shop online on their website .

They’ve actually got two side-by-side stores at Scarborough Town Centre: the regular Sukoshi Mart, as well as Mo•Sukoshi, which is more anime-focused!

It’s always a fun time at the Drake General Store, where you’ll find all things cheeky and fun.

They’re a hotel gift shop/general store/flea market stand/museum shop hybrid, with a super curated selection of unique products.

You can shop cool pins, patches, and kitchenware, a lot of them usually related to Toronto or Canada.

• Butter Baker Market Café

Butter Baker is one of Toronto’s most beloved bakeries , and they serve up all kinds of delicious treats, from flaky croissants , to indulgent cakes , to seasonal soft serve ice cream .

Attached to their downtown bakery is a market, where you can shop all kinds of local and Canadian-made goodies!

From home decor to cookware products, you’ll find plenty of aesthetically-pleasing products to shop.

They even have some of their own offerings in-store, like their own tea blends.

You’ll also find a waffle café at the back of the bakery, where they serve up sweet and savoury waffle creations for brunch .

You can find Butter Baker’s downtown store right by Bay & Dundas, just a few minutes away from the Eaton Centre .

They’ve also got a location in Markham , where they also sell artisan goods alongside their baked treats!

If you love all things Canadian and locally-made, you’ll definitely want to pay a visit to The Nooks.

From handmade jewelry to fun rugs, they have all kinds of cool gifts you can shop for your loved ones.

They give makers 100% of their sales in-store and online and just charge a membership fee, which I think is a really awesome partnership!

The Nooks has locations across Ontario and British Columbia, and you can find them on Queen West near Spadina.

Additionally, you can find their locations in Niagara, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Port Hope, and Masonville!

• Art Gallery of Ontario

The AGO’s gift shop is massive, and there’s actually so much to see in there.

There’s more than just art books and souvenirs – you’ll find plenty of cool gadgets and Canadian-made goodies.

They’ve also done some cool collaborations in the past, like their collab with Toronto-based Pluck Teas for their own special AGO-exclusive loose-leaf teas!

If your giftee is local and enjoys visiting galleries, an AGO Annual Pass is also a great holiday gift idea.

The pass is $35 for the whole year, and it grants them entrance to both the gallery and any special exhibitions!

• Wildly Delicious

Shopping for the foodie in your life?

Wildly Delicious is an amazing specialty food shop in the Distillery District , and they’ve even got a small restaurant inside their store.

They’ve got everything from unique house-made spreads, to jams, to vinegars that you can purchase for your favourite foodie (or for yourself).

Grab some of their chimichurri steak rub, French onion & goat cheese dip, or spiced whiskey marmalade to take home!

• Pusateri’s Fine Foods

Pusateri’s is another great spot to shop gifts for foodies, and they’ve got multiple locations around the city.

They’ve got one of the largest selections of gourmet products in the city, as well as tons of local offerings as well!

Grab your favourite foodie some gourmet cheese from Prince Edward County-based Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co., or some luxe chocolates from Toronto-based David H. Chow.

They have 4 locations at the Eaton Centre and Bayview Village, as well as in Yorkville and on Avenue Road.

• Eataly Toronto

The foodie in your life will definitely appreciate you if you bring them some delicious Italian goodies from Eataly.

Treat them to a holiday dinner at one of Eataly’s in-house Italian restaurants , take them to an Italian cooking class, or find them some gourmet Italian ingredients at the market.

If you’re looking to splurge, the White Sturgeon Caviar by Calvisius Caviar is around $300 for the smallest jar and it is truly  life-changing .

Otherwise, you can grab some authentic Italian pasta ingredients and make pasta together for a fun activity!

• Cocktail Emporium

Cocktail Emporium is a palace of cocktail lovers’ dreams , with everything from cocktail shakers to flavoured syrups.

Stop by one of their stores in Kensington Market (their OG location), on Queen West, or inside Union Station .

If you visit their Kensington Market store, you’ll definitely also want to hit up some of Kensington Market’s vintage clothing stores while you’re there!

You can also do a fun Kensington Market walking tour or food tour to get to know more about one of Toronto’s most diverse neighbourhoods .

While Indigo may be a chain store, they definitely have some of the best gifts and souvenirs to shop, and they do offer a lot of awesome local products.

From reading socks to pretty notebooks, you can definitely find a great gift for anyone at Indigo!

They also have cards, so it’s pretty much a one stop shop for everything you need.

You can find Indigo at pretty much any major shopping mall in Toronto , but my favourite location is their new The Well location by Front & Spadina!

11 Great Toronto Shopping Spots

Shopping in Toronto can fit any taste or budget

A landing spot for many immigrants and a vast city rich with Canadian history, Toronto is home to one of the world's most diverse communities. Just a little over an hour and a half away from New York City by plane, and a bit closer to Detroit, Toronto has fantastic shopping, whether you're looking for retro bargain finds or upscale couture.

The capital of the province of Ontario, Toronto can be a gold mine for visiting shoppers, but beware of two things: the sales tax, and the weather. Mentally tack on about 1 3 percent to the price of clothing, housewares, souvenirs, and other goods, and bundle up (or find the PATH walkways) if you're visiting in winter, as temperatures drop to an average high of about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 degree Celsius) from December through February.

The Toronto Eaton Centre

The Toronto Eaton Centre is a bright and airy shopping mall in the heart of Toronto's downtown that houses more than 230 stores—one of Canada's largest malls and, measured by visitors, consistently the city's biggest tourist attraction. The stores will appeal to the budget conscious and spendthrifts alike.

The mall has undergone several renovations over the years since it opened in 1977. The Toronto Eaton Centre connects underground with the Toronto PATH network of shops and businesses, making it great for cold or rainy days . More than just a place to shop, the multi-level, glass-domed Toronto Eaton Centre is home to several excellent places to eat and features a huge mobile of a flock of Canadian geese, Flight Stop , designed by artist Michael Snow.

Bloor-Yorkville

The Yorkville neighborhood is a delightful anomaly in the midst of Toronto high-rises and shopping malls. Tucked into a pocket of downtown, the quaint Victorian architecture in Yorkville houses dozens of restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries. Bloor Street runs adjacent to Yorkville and features shopping that is upscale and includes high-end names like Holt Renfrew, Prada, Hermes, and Gucci.

Winners is much like TJ Maxx in the U.S., selling designer labels at up to 60 percent off regular prices. Stores are large and a lot of sorting and searching is required, but the payoff is often worth it. In addition, Winners has locations  throughout Toronto, making it an easy addition to any shopping trip you make.

Hudson's Bay Company

Canada's oldest corporation has several different store chains in Toronto and thousands across Canada. The flagship store is right across from the Toronto Eaton Centre. The Bay is a good old-fashioned department store, complete with everything from clothes to household items, and a place to have lunch. The Bay is particularly famous for its Hudson's Bay Blanket, sold for more than two centuries. The Bay also features a TOPSHOP women's clothing department from the popular U.K. retailer.

Toronto has one of the largest Chinatown areas in North America. You will find bargains on exotic trinkets, jewelry, clothing, and household items. Plus, of course, where there's a bustling Chinatown, there's delicious food, and Toronto's Chinatown is no exception. There are numerous restaurants serving not just authentic Chinese, but also Vietnamese and other Asian fare. Chinatown runs along Spadina Avenue from King Street to College Street.

Queen Street

Queen Street cuts east/west through Toronto and morphs from funky retro to chic shops and restaurants to antique shopping to The Beaches district at the far east end. Especially famous for attracting shoppers is Queen Street West (University Avenue to Spadina Avenue): Edgy, hip, and trendy all describe this area of Toronto that also boasts some of the best-known clubs and cafes. The Queen Street West area has, in fact, become so popular that the truly bohemian have moved even further west to what is now known as West Queen West (between Bathurst Street and Niagara Street).

Kensington Market

Kensington Market is a favorite area in Toronto. If you're someone who wants to get away from high-rises and department stores, Kensington Market offers a nice respite from the usual big commercial trappings. Adjacent to Chinatown, Kensington Market has a plethora of retro shops, cheap and used clothing stores, cool cafes, furniture shops, great restaurants, and a variety of ethnic and organic produce stores.

St. Lawrence Market

Close to downtown and central to the historic St. Lawrence neighborhood, St. Lawrence Market includes the South Market, which has over 50 specialty food vendors and a gallery on the second floor, and the North Market, which carries on a tradition of over a century of hosting a Saturday Farmers' Market. On Sundays, more than 80 antique dealers fill the North Market building.

Yonge and Eglinton (Midtown)

Known as "Yonge and Eligible" due to the young professionals that frequent this area, Yonge and Eglinton is less pretentious than Bloor-Yorkville and offers cool, unique finds mixed with mainstream appeal. A mall and indoor shopping concourse are on the corner, or walk north on Yonge Street and peruse a variety of clothing, home decor, and bookstores. Buy yourself something pretty and head to one of the many area clubs and eateries to hang with the beautiful people. Yonge and Eglinton is about a 15-minute subway ride from Union Station or Eaton Centre on the Yonge-University line heading north.

For your indoor shopping pleasure, the PATH is an underground system of over 17 miles of walkways mainly running parallel to Yonge Street and Bay Street. Lined with stores, restaurants, and services, the PATH's atmosphere may be lacking, but on days when the weather is crummy, it's a good way to stay toasty and dry.

Vaughan Mills

Foreign visitors flock to Vaughan Mills , one of the largest malls in Canada, located beside Canada's Wonderland . It has almost 1.3 million square feet (110,000 square meters) of retail space. Vaughan Mills is open 362 days a year, closing only on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Christmas Day.

The Legoland Discovery Centre is an indoor family attraction located at the mall.

Things to Pack when visiting Canada

A good rain jacket is always a good idea, even in the summer. While you are not likely to get wet in July and August, late august almost always sees a wet day, and May, June, and September will also get rain. If you are visiting  Vancouver  or the West Coast, you can likely get by with rain gear and layers, but if you are visiting the rest of the country, pack your winter gear!

A good power bank  to charge phones and other devices is essential for most. After a day of videoing, GPS, and taking photos, the last thing you want is a dead cell phone. These are inexpensive and come in handy during the day. If you are flying to Canada, make sure you keep any power banks in your hand luggage, as security will often remove them from checked bags (I have found that out the hard way before).

A  Universal Adapter  is going to be handy for International Visitors. Canada uses the same plugs as the USA but if you are coming from somewhere else abroad, grab yourself one before you arrive.

A good guidebook is something I always get when I am researching a new location.  Lonely Planet  is the usual go-to, but also check out these. 

Reusable shopping bags are available to buy everywhere, but if you want to get a compact one before you arrive, it is a good idea. There is a small plastic bag tax in most places and some places do not offer plastic bags at all.

Reusable water bottles are also a good idea. You can buy bottled water anywhere that you can get drinks, but Canada does pride itself on recycling as much as possible, and why shell out wasteful dollars when you can drink the tap water all over the country.

Travel Insurance for Canada

There are a few other things to think about when it comes to international travel. The first thing is travel insurance. Whether it is an emergency room visit for something as simple as strep throat, or an emergency appendix surgery, or an unfortunate moped incident things do go wrong when people travel everyday. Canada is a very expensive country for medical care and a doctor’s visit in an Emergency Room is over $800 to just see the doctor. 

I highly suggest travel insurance and a good policy. I personally never travel without it, and I even checked into my policy about care for my children if I am ever in an accident or hospitalized. There are just too many things to think about.

Renting a Car in British Columbia

Rental Cars are very popular in Canada. There is just so much to see and there is not an effective train or bus network that can get you outside of the city. If you plan on leaving downtown Toronto I suggest a rental car. You should get a  rental car  before you arrive and inventory is always low.

Save some room in your suitcase when you visit Toronto with the intent of going shopping. Maybe even bring a bag entirely for your finds, as Toronto has stores so tempting that it will be hard not to pull out the plastic.

Whether you have a red carpet event to attend (us neither) or just want to load up on the latest fashion, Toronto is filled with stores that will delight you and potentially drain your wallet. 

If you like to kick it old school at a department store, Hudson's Bay and Holt Renfrew will bring out a little Audrey Hepburn in you. If you prefer a specialty shop, we have everything from menswear with a built-in barbershop at Gotstyle to Canadian inspired swag at Drake General Store .

Most of these stores are excellent places to get a souvenir or two if you want to let someone know back home that you were thinking of them. If you think that you would be a more deserving recipient of that souvenir, we completely understand.

Likely General

Likely General is a design shop in Toronto like no other. Its diverse products involve knitted hats, limited print books and handcrafted room spray. Owner Brooke Manning is on hand to provide her expertise on every product. Brooke is a musician who has her hand directly in the artistic community, and the local, crafted products that make the cut into her store are goods that you won't find displaced to a garage sale in the future. Brooke uses neat cursive on a chalkboard that she places directly in the front to welcome you into her store. Once you enter you are not "likely" to find anything "general" about the space. (Sorry.) Go to browse, to sign up for a craft course held twice a month, or to align with your artistic side.

St. Lawrence Market

Normally food isn't included in a best shopping list, because grocery shopping is often seen as a chore and not pleasure. That is not true at "the world's best food market", in operation since 1803 on what was then "Market Block." It was the first permanent farmer's market, and insightful tours can keep you abreast of this important part of Toronto history. In 1834 it became a temporary office for the local civic government. It was rebuilt after the Great Fire of Toronto but continues to be a hub of Toronto activity. Most importantly, it has everything delicious under one roof, from locally aged cheeses to the best peameal bacon sandwiches in town.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : St. Lawrence Market has all the food you have ever craved under one roof.

Courtney's expert tip : If you can go during the week, do so. You won't miss the Saturday crowd.

Yorkville Village

Upscale shopping at its best; this Bloor-Yorkville destination has been at the top of the list for visiting celebs and well-to-do Torontonians since it opened back in the 1970s. Look for shoes, handbags and couture from designers such as Badgley Mischka, Christian Louboutin, Monique Lhuillier, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Zac Posen. Shop for organic groceries at Whole Foods (or Whole Paycheque) with the cloth bag-touting elite. Pick up a bottle of wine. Go to Equinox for a sweaty yoga class or spinning session. Whatever you do here, it will be stylish because it's all about location, location, location and Yorkville Village has GOT it.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Yorkville is truly one-of-a-kind in Toronto and the place to go if you are swimming in cash.

Logan & Finley

Logan & Finley is the store you go to when the pulse of the city becomes a little too loud. It is also the place you go when you start to crave a canoe more than a coffee. This eco-friendly store is the in heart of downtown Toronto but feels like it is in harmony with nature. You can buy excellent (albeit stereotypical) Canadian products, such as maple syrup, or you can get other handmade products that are unexpected, such as a local skincare line. The clothing is sustainable and local, with designs that don't scream "I'm a hippie!" During the summer months, golf tees and maxi dresses reign with lovely neutral colors that will blend well with your existing closet.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Toronto is working hard to get greener and this eco-friendly store makes environmental choices look trendy.

Courtney's expert tip : For a great money-saving and green gift, buy some Abeego beeswax wrap. This will replace saran wrap and last for years.

Mountain Equipment Co-op

If there is any sport or activity that you have an affinity for, Mountain Equipment Co-op (or MEC) is the place to go. Whether you are trying on a sweat-wicking, toddler holding backpack or rain gear that will support your trek up Kilimanjaro, MEC is filled with affordable and functional clothing that will move you towards your goals. This outdoor-gear brand prides itself on minimizing environmental impact by building products that last. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or a calm crusader, this large store is interested in outfitting your free time. They have preferred parking set aside for hybrid vehicles and car co-ops. Hudson's Bay

Even though department stores are going out of style about as quickly as the last version of the iPhone, we would be remiss to not include Hudson's Bay in a Toronto 10 Best Shopping list. Hudson's Bay is as Canadian as Canada goose jackets and long shivering winters. Their signature blankets with thick stripes across a white background can be found in almost every Toronto home. The department store itself was founded in 1670 and is North America's largest continually operated company. Being older than Canada itself means that there is a little nostalgia, but also a lot of amazing goods. Clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, beauty products and countless other products can be purchased or admired. If you are a visitor to Toronto, get your hands on one of those blankets.

Holt Renfrew

Shopping at Holt Renfrew in the Bloor-Yorkville area of Toronto harks back to the time when customer service was all about the customer rather than the commission. There are concierges that roam the store ready to attend to your every need. There are complimentary alterations on all full-priced items. There are an in-house spa and barber. There is a cafe with Pinterest-worthy pastries and the frothiest of cappuccinos. High-end designers present fashion shows in the store. The experience is top-notch, even if your price bracket will only allow you to look longingly at items. Drown your sorrows in one of those cappuccinos before you exit.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : A fashionistas paradise, this high-end shopping experience is filled to the brim with luxurious items to covet.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Torontonians like to believe that they are living in Canada's New York, and when Saks Fifth Avenue landed in Toronto it just added more fuel to our fire. This flagship New York Store opened in the old location of Hudson's Bay, a beloved Canadian landmark. The large space proved that retail therapy is apparently not dead. There are over 1,000 shoes on display at any given time, giving an adult playground to every woman (and man, for that matter) who idolized Carrie Bradshaw. Men's clothing and shoes are also enormous departments, as Saks once declared that "Men are the new women." (We'll see.) In any case, this luxury market will have someone for everyone, even those dedicated to getting most of the items in their life from Amazon.

Drake General Store

In the market for some ghee and some ironic children's clothing? You can get both at Drake General Store as well as other quirky items, like adult onesies and solid Gold Slinkys. You can also buy onesies for the kids for one heck of a family photo. Originally the hotel gift shop for the Drake, there are now four locations that are part flea market, part museum shop. "We love things that are sensible and things that are not so sensible," they claim. Look for the neon purple cross which may confuse you to thinking you have landed in a pharmacy when you are just in gifting heaven. (And before you ask, no, the store does not belong to the recording artist.)

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Canadian curated gifts that are memorably unique. Canada is cool. We know it and it is time the rest of the world follows suit.

The distillery district.

The Distillery District is a pedestrian zone, ruling out the danger of heavy traffic that so many shopping areas have, allowing shoppers to wander safely from store to store. The area is a mix of Victorian Industrial architecture from its days as the Gooderham and Worts Distillery in the early 19th century with 21st century influences. It is full of independent stores selling unique clothes and accessories. There are also numerous cafés, restaurants and galleries in the area.

Toronto’s Downtown district is the proud owner of the longest street in the world: Yonge Street. 1. Eaton Centre

Named for Timothy Eaton, founder of Canada’s premier (now defunct) department store, Toronto’s main downtown mall, Eaton Centre, has it all. Four floors of high-end shops include splashy Canadian-born international brands such as Lululemon, Roots and Canada Goose, mixed with local labels, such as Ovo , Drake’s fashion house, and upscale womenswear retailer Aritzia . Across a skybridge sits Hudson’s Bay Company , the mid-range department store and Canadian institution that traces its heritage back to the 17th century fur trade.

2. Yorkville-Bloor

The Yorkville-Bloor district is Canada’s answer to New York ’s Fifth Avenue. On the bustling Bloor Street, you’ll find all the luxury brands, as well as Holt Renfrew , a retail landmark of this upscale neighbourhood. Comparable to Lane Crawford or Nordstrom, this premium department store also stocks a sprinkling of local labels, like winterwear brand Moose Knuckles .

3. Queen and Dundas West

The streets on the northern and southern borders of Trinity Bellwoods Park both have a range of shopping options for the younger set. Queen West showcases some of Canada’s rising retail brands, including Vancouver leisure wear specialists Reigning Champ and Frank and Oak , a Quebec-based retailer known for minimalist essentials.
