Local Living Italy—Sorrento

This was a wonderful way to visit the Amalfi coast. The agriturismo owners were so gracious, the food was delicious, the views were spectacular, and the rooms were charming. The tour guide had some challenges with the weather, but worked hard to make sure we had options of fun things to do. This was my retirement celebration trip and it didn’t disappoint.

Good mix of hillside towns, history (Pompeii and Herculaneum) and hiking. Pathway if the Gods hike was my favourite.

Walking the Amalfi Coast Tour

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Such a great experience! The hikes were awesome; picturesque and captivating. I believe this was the best way to explore the Amalfi coast line by getting the local tour guide who knows these paths so well to lead us through them. Needs a descent fitness level for these hikes as sadly there were elderly people and people in average physical condition that had to pull out of the hikes as early as day 1 which is very unfortunate for them. Thank you so much, I had the best experience and loved every minute. I’m so grateful for the amazing people I met.

Highlights of Sorrento,Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour Tour

Highlights of Sorrento,Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour

We had a wonderful time in Italy!!!! Omar was so very helpful in planning our trip of a lifetime. Our private tour guide was Gabriella. She was very knowledgeable about Naples, Sorrento, Capri, and all about the Amalfi Coast. While in Naples she knew where to get the wallet pizza, espressos, pastries, etc. We saw Cathedrals, Roman roads, gorgeous buildings, etc. Next we went to Pompeii which was incredible. It's amazing that the ruins have lasted this long. We also went to a wine tasting at a winery, "Tears of Christ" at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. We had a five course lunch with five different wines, and the setting was beautiful. We had multiple private drivers. Marco was with us a couple of days. Gabriella, Marco, David and I had a fun time touring Italy and they were both extremely knowledgeable on the coast and the sites. We had two lemoncello tastings, one in Sorrento and one in Scala. We actually saw where they make the lemoncello and how the process is done, which you can do it home. I am sure it won't be the same! We went to Capri on a slightly dreary day. But it was beautiful. We took a boat ride around the coast and the scenery left you speechless. We did some shopping....saw where the perfumes were made and of course purchased a couple of bottles. We stayed in three hotels....Naples, Sorrento, Ravello. All were beautiful! We love the scenery of the country, the food, and the history. It is amazing how the homes, hotels and businesses are literally built on the rock on a high cliff, and the lemon grove terraces on the steep mountains were so lush. Gabriella told us history about the roads and the rock walls, we passed the oldest hotel in the area...lots of little things. She and the drivers knew where to stop and take the most breathtaking pictures for our memories. We would highly recommend this tour!

Walking with the Gods Tour

Walking with the Gods

We had a great 5-day sailing tour with Sail and experience. The boat was nice and clean. Skipper Anzo was cool and friendly. Organizer Claudia was also kind and helpful. They helped us to arrange transportation between Napoli and the Marina. We sailed along the Amalfi coast, visited Capri, Positano, and Sorrento. The itinerary was well planned so the trip was really relaxing and enjoyable. We were neither rushing to a place nor spending too much time on one spot. The hike on the Path of Gods arranged on the third day was nice. It was an easy hike. Unfortunately it was a foggy day, otherwise the coastline view would be more stunning. Personally will definitely come back to hike on a sunny day in the future. Wish it was a 6-day sail instead of 5-day so we would be able to visit Amalfi and Ravello. Overall great tour and highly recommended. :)

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento Tour

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento

I had a great time in this active trip called Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento, and I would have given 5 stars if the description of the hikes were more correctly explained, or if of the difficult hikes were interchangeable with less strenuous days. The first three walks were very difficult, not “leisurely” as described. The Pino Gorge walk to San Lazaro of 5 kilometers, that took about 2 hours was nothing but easy. On our cellulars we recorded over 10,000 steps and 50 flors up. There were an equal number of floors down, and not easy at all. The steps were uneven, really high, broken, slippery and it was dangerous to take your eyes away from them. The afternoon walk was longer, and harder, being described by a fellow traveler as “Stairway to Heaven”. Next day, another walk on the Ancient Republic’s Path. This was more difficult than the day before. We covered 6 kilometers. The description in the itinerary states “a total ascent of 90 meters and a 755 meters decent. The health data on my cellphone showed 21,863 steps and 116 floors up. I regret I don’t have the exact number of floors we descended, but they were astronomical, considering the 755 meters of decent. The following day half of us were afraid to attempt the “Walk in the Ferreire NP” and missed that visit. Scheduling three days in a row long, three difficult walks was a mistake, and describing them as leisurely, or even moderate was not accurate. We are only people, not related to Superman. For the rest of the trip, visiting Ravello, Capri Island, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and ending with the Path of the Gods descent was great, but still not easy. I have to highly recommend the Hotel Risorgimento, were we spent a week. It was really impressive that in a small, not touristic town, to find such high quality place, excellent food, cleanness, present owners. We were treated as family, respected and made welcome. That was an excellent choice.

What people love about Capri Tours

Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour
Overall I really enjoyed the Amalfi walking tour. Staying in a small community was a welcome change from the large city tourist experience. The accommodations were as expected, and the Agritourisimo owners were lovely hosts. I especially enjoyed the homemade pasta and desserts. The wine tasting dinner was a lot of fun and the pizza was excellent. I could not have asked for a nicer group of fellow hikers. Our guide, Peter, was very personable, attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities and was knowledgable about the region. I am a 67 year old Canadian woman in excellent health and keep physically very active. I live in a location that is predominantly flat land. I made an effort to climb hills as much as possible to train for the walk but walking on ground is not enough to prepare for all the stone steps on the walks. Stair climbing and descending would be at good training routine. I found going down the steps very hard on the knees, but they felt better after a couple of days of walking on this terrain. I would caution anyone with knee or hip joint problems about choosing this tour. A 76 year old woman in our group had no problems at all. However, after falling on the loose rock the first day, an 85-year-old man from North America was not able to participate in most of the walks. Peter was able to suggest alternate activities for him and his wife and they were still able to enjoy the trip. Anyone older should have excellent balance and be used to walking on uneven terrain and climbing up and down rocky obstacles. I think an upper limit of 85 is overly optimistic for this tour.
great tour especially the tour guide, Edward Palermo!!! He is amazing helped us in so many ways.....

Motoscafisti Capri, Italy - skippers since 1955

For more than half a century, Motoscafisti di Capri has been the number 1 choice for boat excursions around the Island of Capri.

The Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni, the lighthouse: no trip to Capri, Italy can be considered complete without having first sailed around the island. The best and safest way to enjoy a trip on the sea surrounding Capri is to sail with the island's leading boat company, the oldest and most experienced in the business: the Motoscafisti di Capri!

Ferrying services

We are the only company on Capri authorized to provide ferrying services.

Since 1955, we have been transporting passengers, luggage, and merchandise to and from ships anchored within the port area of Capri. An exclusive ferrying service which testifies to our professionalism and guarantees the safety of all passengers.

A tale of the sea

In 1826, a fisherman from Marina Grande accompanied the German painter August Kopisch to the Blue Grotto, which, at the time, was known only to the islanders. From that moment on, news of the extraordinary beauty of the sea cave began to spread around the world and more and more visitors coming to Capri asked to see the Blue Grotto and sail around the island by boat.

In 1955, the fishermen of Capri who organized these trips decided to found a company, which would enable them to offer a truly professional service to customers. Thus Motoscafisti di Capri was born.

Our skippers

All our skippers speak English; many speak French and Spanish, as well. They are all native to Capri, and are available for anything you may need during your sail.

Our boats are insured to cover damages to people, property, and animals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blue grotto, does the ticket include entrance to the blue grotto.

No, even though some boat companies state the contrary, you will have to pay to enter the Blue Grotto separately, at the entrance to the cave. The Blue Grotto is a state-owned cultural property.

When is the Blue Grotto open to the public?

The Blue Grotto is open from 09.00 to 17.00, sea and general weather conditions permitting. Visitors enter the Grotto via a 1 meter high cavity: in rough or high seas, it is impossible to access the cave.

Is the Blue Grotto open in the winter?

Yes, when sea conditions are favorable, the Grotto is open in winter too.

Can you swim inside the Blue Grotto?

During the day, the steady procession of boats going in and out of the cave makes swimming impossible. When the Blue Grotto is closed, entry is prohibited.

How long does the trip to the Blue Grotto take?

The journey from Marina Grande, the visit to the cave, and return, will take about an hour.

Trip around the island

How long does the trip around the island take.

The trip all the way around the island takes about 2 hours and includes the stop at the Blue Grotto.

Is the visit of the Blue Grotto obligatory?

The boat will stop to allow those who want to visit the sea cave to do so. If you don't want to go inside the Grotto, you are welcome to stay on board!

No, you will have to pay to see the Grotto at the entrance of the cave (see response to question above).

Do you offer other trips too?

Yes, we also organize trips sailing around the Faraglioni, departing from Marina Grande and arriving at the Siren's rock, where you can take a photo of the sea with the Faraglioni in the background.

Do you offer discounted rates for groups?

Yes, contact us for a quote.

Private excursions

Do you rent boats without crew.

No, we only rent boats manned by a skipper.

Is it possible to fish from the boat?

Yes, but we'll need to know beforehand so that we can reserve the right type of craft. If you want to organize a fishing trip, let us know in advance!

Can I take a shower on the boat?

Yes, all of the boats used for private excursions are equipped with soft water shower.

I'm in Capri but I haven't got any of the things I need for a day at sea, can you help?

No problem, on request we will get you anything and everything you need: swimming costumes, beach towels, face masks and flippers etc...

Do you have children's life jackets?

Of course: all our boats are equipped with life jackets for both adults and children. In addition, all our passengers are covered by our company insurance.

Transfers and charters

Do you do night-time transfers.

Yes, we are often asked to provide nocturnal transportation for customers going to a party, discotheque, or attending an important evening event. The time you go and the time you come back are entirely up to you!

I need to organize a transfer for more than 150 people. Is that possible?

For groups which exceed 150 passengers, we can organize a transfer using more than one boat. We often provide such a service for wedding parties, when the bride and groom travel on their own private boat and their guests sail on boats behind them, forming a floating procession.

Is there room on your boats for large suitcases?

Yes, when you book your transfer let us know just how many suitcases you intend to bring and we will book a suitable boat for you.

Blue Grotto Tours

Tours to the most famous attraction on the island of Capri

To visit the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), you need to reach the entrance of the cave by land or sea. There, all visitors must board small rowboats, the only kind of boats that are allowed inside the cave. The grotto closes in case of rough seas or high winds, so you can't book a ticket in advance to visit the cave itself but only a boat tour that includes a stop at the cave entrance. Tickets to the grotto must be purchased directly at the cave entrance (there is a floating ticket office). More information about the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra)

How to Visit the Blue Grotto from the Capri Port

At the Marina Grande port, look for the Motoscafisti and Laser Capri ticket offices. These two boat companies offer both island tours with Blue Grotto stops and transfers directly to the Blue Grotto on larger group boats. Otherwise, you can opt for a private boat tour or transfer via a traditional gozzo boat.

Group Boat Tours from Capri's port (EUR 21/person)

Choose a Capri boat tour + stop at the Blue Grotto . The boat will cruise around the island then stop outside the Blue Grotto entrance. Here passengers will be loaded onto small rowboats to enter the grotto itself.

Private Boat Tours from Capri's port (from around EUR 300/boat)

You can also book a private tour with a gozzo boat and skipper to visit the Blue Grotto plus 'stop to swim in the coves along the coastline . These boats can fit up to 7 passengers, though there are larger boats for more passengers. A tour of about 3-4 hours costs from EUR 300.

How to Visit the Blue Grotto from Sorrento

Sorrento is an excellent base for visiting Capri since the island is only a 30-minute hydrofoil ride away (tickets cost about EUR 20/person one way). You can take the ferry on your own and then book a boat tour from the Capri port to the Blue Grotto, or book a tour that departs directly from Sorrento, either with a small group or with a private tour.

Group Boat Tours from Sorrento (from EUR 69/person)

Large- and small-group tours set off directly from Sorrento and offer an excellent balance between price and service. These tours cruise around the island then stop outside the Blue Grotto entrance. Here passengers will be loaded onto small rowboats to enter the grotto itself. Afterwards, the boat returns to Sorrento. Budget Tours from Sorrento

Private Boat Tours from Capri's port (from around EUR 500/boat

You can also book a private tour with a gozzo boat and skipper to visit the Blue Grotto plus stop to swim in the coves along the coastline . These boats can fit up to 7 passengers, though there are larger boats for more passengers. Private Boat Tours from Sorrento

How to Visit the Blue Grotto from the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, or Naples

To visit the Blue Grotto and island of Capri, take an early morning ferry to Capri and book your group boat tour or private boat tour of Capri in advance to make the most of your time. Otherwise, reserve a private boat with skipper that departs directly from one of the towns on the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, or Naples. Boat Tours from Positano, Naples, Ischia...

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to enter the blue grotto.

The entrance fee to the Blue Grotto is EUR 18 (EUR 11 for the rowboat and 7 for the entrance ticket) and is paid at a floating ticket office. Children up to 6 years enter for free, while there are discounted rates for teenagers. It is possible to pay only in cash.

CAPRI’S NATURAL BEAUTY

After a delicious breakfast, we’re going to discover why Capri was so beloved by the ancient Roman Emperors who built villas on the island to escape the chaos of Rome.

For millenia, people have been transfixed by the island’s natural beauty – the rugged, dramatic mountainous terrain in contrast to the azure blue Tyrrhenian Sea. We’re going to the top of Capri – Monte Solaro – for stupendous views not seen by many visitors.

Arriving by chairlift we stop to soak up the views and then make our way to a celebrated villa to admire its small but mighty collection of rare antiquities.

Then it’s time to descend back down to Anacapri on foot via the serene Cetrella Valley – a peaceful natural wilderness beloved by the locals. We’ll enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch in the forest and enjoy the views before returning to our hotel for time to relax.

In the evening we toast the Ancient Romans and their love of the island at an iconic terrace with incredible views before a delicious dinner in a beautiful lemon grove.

Capri boat tour – the best way to spend a day in capri.

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

Thinking of taking a Capri boat tour? Cruising around the isle of Capri is one of our life’s favorite experiences, so make sure that you do. Here’s what to expect.

As you tour Italy ‘s Amalfi coast your gaze inevitably rests on the island in the distance. It is the legendary island of Capri and it is best seen from the clear waters that lap its rocky shores. Without a doubt, of all the amazing things to do in Capri, the one thing you must experience is a boat tour around the island.

What's in this article

Capri, Italy

Highlights of a capri boat trip, capri island tour options, tips for your tour, what to do in capri in a day.

The isle of Capri is the stuff of legend and that is not a throwaway line. The Ancient Greeks spoke of Capri in the story of Ulysses. It was off the island’s craggy shores that Ulysses resisted the temptations of the Sirens, beautiful mythical creatures who lured sailors to their deaths with their enchanting voices.

Rising up out of the Bay of Naples, you feel Capri before you even arrive. And its presence stays with you forever. The island’s majestic peaks and rocky terrain contrast with the bluest sea you ever saw. Today Capri is the playground of the world’s rich and famous and it’s easy to see why.

The island has a captivating beauty that has to be seen with your own eyes.

You join your boat at Marina Grande if you are staying on the island or have arrived by ferry. Otherwise, a day trip to Capri that includes this tour is an easy option from Naples , Sorrento or other towns on the Amalfi Coast .

Either way, your skipper takes you anti-clockwise for your tour of the island. Make sure your camera is charged and you are looking your glamorous best, this is the place for a million photo opportunities.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect on your boat tour of Capri.

The iconic rock formations known as the Faraglioni , are some of the most enduring images of Capri. I gasped when our boat turned around the coast towards these monoliths towering in the distance. It’s such a spectacular sight.

As you approach your skipper will tell you with a wink that it is good luck to kiss your loved one as you pass through the middle of the Faraglione di Mezzo. And so, of course, you do!

Punta Carena

People have lived on Capri for thousands of years – even Roman Emperors. So you see man made beauties alongside the natural wonders. I loved this old stone bridge with the sea glistening beneath.

The Punta Carena lighthouse has been standing watch on the island’s south-west coast since 1866 and is said to be the best place to watch the sun set on the isle of Capri.

Emerald Grotto and White Grotto

No filters required on these photos! The sea is really that gorgeous turquoise color.

Apart from the famous Blue Grotto (more on that below), Capri has a White and Green grotto where the sea changes color reflecting the limestone in the rocky seabed and rock formations overhead.

The Blue Grotto

But did you see the Blue Grotto ? I hear you ask. No, sadly we did not. We saw the entrance which is that tiny opening beneath the shrine in the image above. Despite the sparkling seas, it was too rough for boats to enter. It’s a good idea to set your expectations that you may not be able to go and if you do manage to enter the cave, it’s a bonus.

I won’t lie. I was bitterly disappointed when I heard that the sea cave was not included in our tour.  But in the end, we chose not to visit the grotto . We enjoyed the other grottoes instead and enjoyed our time on the island.

Tours of the Blue Grotto are run separately from Marina Grande and you pick them up when you arrive on the island. It is not possible to prebook these tours.

Check our tips on visiting the grotto below – your visit is subject to the weather and tides so it’s not always possible to go inside anyway.

Capri boat tours are not created equally. There are pros and cons of choosing a boat cruise of the island and unsurprisingly it comes down to variables of price, tour length and quality of experience.

Sorrento to Capri day tour

We took a semi-private boat tour of Capri from Sorrento that suited our needs perfectly. We were picked up from our accommodation and transferred to a small harbour close to Sorrento. Our family of four joined 7 other people on a luxurious cruiser for the journey. The boat tour takes a maximum of 12 people and it was extremely comfortable.

You can sit at the back of the boat or do as we did and lounge on the front deck as your cruiser speeds towards Capri. The advantage of a small boat is immediately obvious as you approach the island. To get close to the grottoes and inlets your boat needs to be nimble. We managed to get close to all the highlights mentioned above and I even had a gorgeous kiss on the cheek from my son under the Faraglione di Mezzo!

Our skipper was a cheeky chap with lots of jokes and interesting pieces of information about the island. He was not only in charge of steering and quips but also managed to serve us some drinks and a delicious tomato and mozzarella panino each.

We docked at Marina Grande for four hours of exploring at leisure and then, with fresh winds whipping our hair and sun on our face, we cruised back to the mainland looking longingly at Capri behind us.

The tour lasted approximately 8 hours, so it’s a full day excursion. Other options included a stop for swimming and snorkelling (it was a bit cold for that when we visited) and a private bus tour to Anacapri which we did not take. There were wifi, towels, and snorkel gear on board.

With transfers both ways included in the €100 per person price, we thought the Capri small group boat tour  was great value > Check boat tour prices and book now

TIP: You can also book a fully private tour from Sorrento to Capri. This is worth considering if you have a large group or just want to enjoy the island on your own. > Click for more info and prices

Day tour from other spots on the Amalfi Coast and Naples

Similar day tours of Capri leave from towns along the Amalfi Coast and from Naples and Salerno.

If you want to take this option, do check on the size of the boat, time spent in Capri and number of people onboard.

Private Capri Island tour by traditional gozzo boat

For an intimate and perhaps the best boat tour of Capri, why not hire a traditional gozzo boat to transport you around the island. This looked to me to be the most romantic and classic way to explore Capri by water.

As you can see they are small vessels and may not suit those prone to seasickness or families (like us) with young children. I think teenagers would love it and especially enjoy jumping off the boat when the weather is warm. This option would also be great if you have a group of friends or family to share the cost

The gozzo boats take up to 6 passengers and can be hired at the port of Marina Grande or you can > check the prices and book here

Two hour island tour from Marina Grande Capri

If you are staying on Capri (how wonderful) or arriving by ferry from Sorrento or Naples, you can take a tour of the island leaving from Marina Grande. This two hour tour includes visiting the grottoes, stopping for a swim if the weather is fine and trying the local limoncello liqueur – it’s refreshing and delicious! > Check boat tour prices and book now

One hour island tour from Marina Grande

I would only take this option if you are on a very strict budget or have limited time. We saw several of these tours on the water and made the following observations:

  • The boats that take these tours are large and packed full of people all craning over each other to take photos
  • Cruise time is less than an hour so there is very little time to stop and enjoy the experience
  • It is impossible for these boats to reach some of the beautiful grottoes due to their size

You can buy tickets for these tours at the ferry terminals

Our day in Capri was one of my ultimate travel highlights. Here are some tips to make sure your day is as enjoyable as ours was:

  • take sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to shield you from the sun
  • bring a bottle of water and a small snacks in case you get hungry
  • a light sweater or cardigan is useful for the journey home
  • a swim suit is a must if the weather is warm! Most tours provide towels but check in advance
  • make sure your camera and phone are charged and you have a spare battery or power pack – you will take a million photos

Lastly, have an idea of things that you want to see and do on the island before you go. Unless you are happy simply gazing at the views. And that is completely fine too! I have given you some ideas below.

LISTEN: Transport yourself to Capri by tuning into our podcast episode: Come Away to Capri

After our boat tour, we docked at Marina Grande and had four hours to explore the island at leisure. We took the funicular to the town of Capri, wandered its cobbled streets and marvelled at the panoramic views of the island from above.

After stopping for lunch in the chic Piazetta – visit the Pulalli wine bar (amazing) – we strolled a little further through the town and visited the Giardini di Augusto for incredible views of the island.

Just when we thought the views couldn’t get any better, we found the  Certosa di San Giacomo monastery where you can enjoy the surrounding beauty in relative solitude.

Our leisurely pace meant we didn’t have time to visit Anacapri or take the chairlift to Monte Solaro. They are both an absolute must for our return visit. I would also have loved to visit  Villa Jovis , the ruins of an ancient Roman palace built by Emperor Tiberius. And shopped for beautiful sandals at one of the many boutiques.

And of course, I would have loved to have seen the Blue Grotto

Tips for visiting Capri’s Blue Grotto

Are you intent on seeing the Blue Grotto?

Here are some tips on visiting Capri’s most famous attraction that we learned from the skipper on our boat

  • The best time to visit is between 09:00 am and 14:00pm when the light creates the most spectacular effects
  • How brilliant the blue of the grotto appears is in direct proportion to available sunlight. Therefore it will not be as alluring on an overcast day
  • You reach the Blue Grotto by boat from Marina Grande [cost €18 per person] or bus from Anacapri.
  • Opening times for the Blue Grotto are 09:00 am to 17:00 pm. In adverse weather conditions, the site is closed
  • Blue Grotto tours cost €14 [2023] for the rowboat and entry to the cave. There is no charge for children under 6 years. Tickets can be purchased at the grotto entrance
  • You enter the grotto in a small rowboat and must lie down flat to get through the entrance. You then spend 5 minutes in the cave enjoying the spectacular natural wonder
  • Queue times to enter the grotto can be well over an hour in peak season

A few hours is not nearly enough to explore the beautiful isle of Capri. But I just know I will return one day.

How long does the Capri private boat tour last?

The boat tour of Capri can last anywhere between 3 hours to full day (7-8 hours) depending on the tour you decide to take. It also depends on the tour’s starting point, whether it is Capri, Sorrento or Naples.

Grotta Azzurra - The Blue Grotto Capri

Tiberius' Sacred Santuary: Capri's Blue Grotto.

Grotta Azzurra - The Blue Grotto Capri

The grotto can be visited today, 29 April 2024 (Unless weather conditions change)

The information listed here is updated in real time by Motoscafisti Capri . It is not possible to guarantee ahead of time and with certainty if the grotto will be open or closed. Each morning at 9 am, the skippers arrive at the mouth of the cave and evaluate if it is safe to enter.

The grotto is closed at the moment until the weather conditions change

Visiting the Blue Grotto - Capri Getting there: by boat from Marina Grande or by bus from Anacapri Ticket price: EUR 18 Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The grotto is closed to visitors during rough seas or high winds, and it's always closed on December 25th and January 1st. Opening times and prices may vary. Please check them at info-points in Marina Grande or in Piazzetta.

This is the most famous sight on Capri, where visitors from around the world form long queues to get a peek inside for just a few magical moments: we're talking about the Blue Grotto , of course. This natural cavern is 25 meters wide and 60 meters long, with a tiny entrance less than a meter high. To enter, visitors lay back in wooden rowboats and glide through the low cave mouth. Once inside, the boats bob in the dark, suspended on the surface of water so blue that it seems dream-like .

Floating in the Grotta Azzurra is an experience that should be on any traveller's bucket list.

Visiting the Blue Grotto Capri - Practical Tips

Entrance to the Blue Grotto is possible only by boarding small rowboats which hold a maximum of four passengers at a time. The entrance ticket must be purchased at the floating ticket office at the cave entrance. After purchasing your ticket, your skipper will ask that you lay back along the bottom of the boat to enable the group to pass through the tiny mouth of the cave. Once inside, your skipper will row you around the cavern, singing traditional Neapolitan folk songs which echo off the rock walls and create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Tour to Capri from Sorrento Tour to Capri from Positano and the Amalfi Coast

There are a number of ways to reach the Blue Grotto entrance:

By tour boat : from Marina Grande, the Motoscafisti , Laser Capri , and Capri Cruise boat charter companies depart with organized group tours of the island of Capri and stops at the Blue Grotto. Tickets cost around EUR 21 (tickets to enter the Blue Grotto must be purchased separately). These tours take about 2 hours.

More information about tours of the island by sea.

The Motoscafisti charter also offers round trip transport to the Blue Grotto from the port. Tickets for this service are EUR 21 (in addition to tickets to enter the Blue Grotto) and the trip lasts about an hour.

Book the transfer to the Blue Grotto

By rental boat : from Marina Grande, visitors can hire a gozzo (the traditional boat of Capri) with skipper for a tour of the island by sea and a stop at the Blue Grotto. Private boats can usually transport up to seven passengers, costs start from around EUR 200 for two hours.

Book a private boat with skipper

By private boat : if you are visiting Capri on your private boat, you can anchor near the grotto (there are a number of buoys near the entrance) and call for a boat to transfer you to the grotto entrance.

By land : the cave entrance can be reached by land from Anacapri: Take Via Pagliaro from the center of town, then Via Grotta Azzurra. At the end of the road, follow the stairs down to the grotto, where you can board the rowboats. The walk is about 3.5 km (40 minutes downhill) from Anacapri, or there is a bus line which leaves from Piazza della Pace in Anacapri and reaches the cave in 15 minutes.

How long is the cave visit?

Rowboats stay inside the Blue Grotto for about five minutes. That said, the line to enter the cave is often quite long... in high season, wait times can reach two hours .

Can visitors swim in the Blue Grotto Capri?

No, visitors can neither enter the cave by swimming nor disembark from their rowboat to swim inside the cave. However, after the cave closes to the public at 5:30 p.m. (when the rowboats and ticket office close), many swimmers enter the cave by sea. This is both illegal and dangerous, as the cave mouth is low and narrow and in case of high waves it is easy to get thrown against the rocks.

When is the best time of day to visit the Blue Grotto?

The glowing effect of the water inside the Blue Grotto is due to the sunlight which enters through a second, underwater cave mouth beneath that on the surface. For this reason, the most intense color comes with the most intense sunlight during the midday hours of noon to 2:00 p.m. . The difference between the first morning light and the late afternoon light is negligible, though there is often a longer line in the afternoon. It is best to avoid visiting the grotto on overcast days, when there internal glow is much less dramatic.

How much does it cost to visit the Blue Grotto?

The EUR 18 ticket includes the entrance fee and the cost of the rowboat transport (EUR 11). Children entrance under 6 years old: free. EU citizens under 18 pay just for the rowboat transport. For EU citizens between 18 and 25 years of age, there is a discount of 50% on the entrance fee, for a total of EUR 15. The rowboat skippers are often tipped. The ticket price is in addition to the cost of a boat transfer to the cave entrance, which is about EUR 21 for a full island tour by sea or for a round trip ticket just to the grotto.

Is the Blue Grotto ever closed due to weather?

In case of rain or rough seas, it is not possible to enter the Blue Grotto. It often happens that the cave can close and reopen in the same day, according to the weather, or that the weather seems calm but the grotto is closed due to adverse winds. To find out if the grotto is closed at any given time, call the Motoscafisti di Capri pier by dialing 081 8375646 after 9 am. Unfortunately, it's not possible to foresee closures due to weather, though the grotto is usually kept closed when the weather forecasts high wind and waves.

Is the grotto closed in winter?

The Blue Grotto is open all year round, weather permitting, though it is often closed from November to March. If visiting in winter, it's best to check first either at the ticket offices of Laser Capri (Molo 21) and Motoscafisti di Capri (Molo 0) in Marina Grande, or by calling 081 8375646 after 9 am. If the ticket offices are closed, the grotto is closed, as well.

The history of the Blue Grotto

This sea cave was known during the time of ancient Rome, when it is thought that the Blue Grotto was one of Emperor Tiberius ' favorite nymphaea, or temples dedicated to sea nymphs. Inside the cavern, a number of statues have been found dating from that period. For many centuries, the Blue Grotto (also known in the past as the Grotta di Gradola) was abandoned, feared by the local sailors because of legends of spirits and demons which inhabited the cave. This changed dramatically on April 18, 1826 when the cave was "rediscovered" by the German writer August Kopisch and painter Ernst Fries , his friend and travel companion, who were taken to the cave by Angelo Ferraro, local fisherman, and notary Giuseppe Pagano.

How to Reach the Blue Grotto By boat : 10 minutes from Marina Grande or as a stop during a tour of the island. By bus : from Anacapri, 50 meters from Piazza Vittoria. On foot : follow Viale T. de Tommaso, Via Pagliaro and Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km).

As tourists move in, Italians are squeezed out on holiday island of Capri

By Crispian Balmer

CAPRI, Italy (Reuters) – Famed for its blue seas, breathtaking views and cove-studded coastline, the Mediterranean island of Capri has been a tourist haven since the early years of the Roman empire.

Unlike in the imperial heyday, when emperors made it their exclusive playground, Capri now attracts visitors from around the world, clogging its narrow alleys, packing the piazzas and blocking the beaches during the hot summer months.

As many as 16,000 tourists a day pour onto the rocky isle in peak season, outnumbering the 12,900 residents. Most are day trippers, but increasing numbers stay the night as ever more homes are given over to holiday lets, bringing its own problems.

“Capri is becoming a dormitory for tourists,” said Teodorico Boniello, head of the local consumers’ association. “There are more people coming than we can cope with and families can’t set down roots because they can’t afford to stay.”

Capri is a microcosm of many European holiday hotspots. Locals depend on visitors for their livelihoods, but the advent of mass tourism risks turning their picture-perfect beauty spots into blobs of shuffling humanity.

Some Italian towns and islands are starting to push back, albeit gently.

Venice last week became the first city in the world to introduce an entrance fee for visitors in peak periods, Florence has banned new holiday lets in the city centre and the Cinque Terre park on the Italian Riviera started charging 15 euros for access to a popular coastal footpath to tackle overcrowding.

Capri has doubled its own visitors’ fee from 2.5 euros to 5 euros, which outsiders pay when they catch a ferry from nearby Naples or Sorrento from April through to October.

“We are looking to persuade more people to visit during winter,” Capri Mayor Marino Lembo told Reuters, sitting in his office with the smog of Naples hanging far in the distance.

But such a fee looks unlikely to dissuade tourists from travelling to an island which has more than four million tagged photos on Instagram, drawing in an endless flow of visitors eager to add the same views to their social media pages.

Moreover, locals say it will do nothing to help ease the housing crisis, which forces many essential workers, including teachers and medics, to live on the mainland.

EARLY STARTS

Antonio De Chiara, 22, wakes up every morning at 5.20 a.m. in his hometown near Naples in order to be sure to catch the 7.00 a.m. ferry, which takes 50 minutes to reach Capri. Around 400 other commuters join him on the ride across the bay.

Barely out of Naples, those on a tight schedule start queuing in the aisles to ensure they are first off the boat to grab a seat on one of a handful of small buses that head up the hill to town. Stragglers risk a lengthy wait.

“It would be lovely to live in Capri, but it is very difficult. Even if I could find a place, the rent would take up all my salary,” said De Chiara, who recently got a job as a child therapist on the island.

Stefano Busiello, 54, teaches maths in a Capri high school but lives in Naples and has commuted back and forth for 20 years. “I have never even tried to find a house here. I could never afford one and things are getting harder.”

Only 20% of staff in his school actually live on Capri, he said, with everyone else arriving on the ferries — a daily grind that means most of his colleagues stay no more than two or three years before seeking a transfer to mainland schools.

Roberto Faravelli, who runs a Bed and Breakfast near the port, says people like himself might be willing to rent their properties to workers if the region offered incentives to close the gap on lucrative holiday lets.

“The government needs to encourage homeowners to offer long-term rents. What we lack is anyone trying to resolve these problems,” he said.

But mayor Lembo did not expect the authorities to intervene. “It is unfortunate, but this is the market economy at work.”

POST-COVID SURGE

Vacation rental platform Airbnb lists more than 500 properties on Capri against around 110 in 2016. This is just the tip of the iceberg, with local families renting out their properties during the summer months on unregulated portals.

“This short-term rental market is chaotic. There are no controls,” said Lembo.

Despite obvious resentment over the lack of viable housing, Capri has not yet witnessed the sort of protests seen elsewhere — such as Spain’s Canary Islands, where thousands took to the streets this month to demand limits on tourist arrivals.

The end of the COVID pandemic has seen tourism surge across Europe as global travellers seek to make up for lost time.

Italy had near record overnight stays in 2023, according to data collated by the Florence centre of tourism studies, and was the 5th most visited country in the world in 2023, with tourists drawn to its quaint villages and culture-rich cities.

But none were built for mass travel.

In the morning during high season, a fleet of ferries disgorge up to 5,000 visitors into Capri’s tiny port in just two hours. Everyone wants to head up to the town of Capri and the smaller Anacapri, but the buses can only carry 30 people at a time and the funicular 50.

“You can easily wait two or even three hours to get up the hill in summer. The quays get packed. Noone can move,” said Boniello, flicking through videos on his phone of people crammed one against the other.

Lembo acknowledges the problems, but denies tourism is ruining an island his ancestors have lived on for centuries. “I don’t agree with nostalgics who say Capri was more beautiful 100 years ago. There was misery and poverty back then. Now there is wealth, and that is thanks to tourism.”

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.
