Exotics XJ1 Fairway Woods: What you need to know

tour edge xj1 driver review

Tour Edge is best known for its fairway woods, so it makes sense that its new launch makes forward strides in the world of fairway woods. Its new Exotics XJ1 line uses a new titanium material, a surprisingly sole-heavy design for a higher launch and more forgiveness, and debuts a new shaft from Fujikura.

The entire body of the XJ1 woods is constructed from 9-1-1 titanium, which Tour Edge calls “Supermetal” due to its combination of strength and light weight (it’s 10 percent lighter than 6A4v, a popular titanium used in golf club manufacturing). With the salvaged weight from the body, Tour Edge was able to create a heavier sole, which now holds 124 grams of tungsten, or two-thirds of the heads total weight.

Screen Shot 2016-10-27 at 3.18.31 PM

The tungsten sole is applied to the body using a process called combo brazing, and the face, made with SP-700 Beta titanium, is laser bonded to the body. The face uses variable thickness across its surface to maximize ball speeds, even on off-center hits.

To help slicers turn the ball over, there is also a 12-gram tungsten screw in the heel that can be interchanged with 10-, 14- or 16-gram weights.

Exotics XJ1 woods will come stock with Fujikura’s Air Speeder shaft, which weighs in at 45 grams. According to Tour Edge, it’s the first company to put that shaft into a retail launch. The fairway woods will sell for $449.99 starting on November 15 in right-hand only, and will be available in the following lofts; 3-wood (15 degrees), 4-wood (17 degrees), 5-wood (18 degrees), and 7-wood (21 degrees).

Right hand only. What a shame. They should at least have custom order options for left hand so they wouldn’t get stuck with excess inventory. I really don’t think there is a huge difficulty flipping a right handed club around & producing a left handed model.

Seems like a really heavy head for the lightweight shaft.

The table provides total club weight, not head weight. They’re actually quite light for total club weight.

The Fuji air speed shaft is a great idea – I am using a 45g shaft in a 4 wd, and it launches mid, and even when hit on the face a bit low or from the rough, it still gets air and ball go far.

those are big, the 5 wood is almost identical in size to the F6 3 wood. For the off the deck, that’s just too big for player of my skill level.

As a matter of fact, Exotics is releasing XJ1 driver for $699.99. http://golfweek.com/2016/09/20/tour-edge-exotics-xj1-driver/

$450 for a fairway wood? Are you kidding me! If they make a similar driver will it cost $800? TourEdge used to be known for goods clubs at a reasonable price. I guess that is over. Seriously, with prices like this and PXG, clubs it is a wonder anyone buys clubs anymore.

Oct 28, 2016 at 9:03 am

It is a Tour Edge Exotics – that line is premium with a premium price – has always been that way. I demoed its EX9 4wd with a Grand Bassara 39, and it was almost as long as my driver , and I hit it off the deck- and that is a steel head. Ti may go as far as your driver.

Best irons in golf of 2024: Most technology packed

tour edge xj1 driver review

In our effort to assemble the 2024 best irons, we have again compiled an expert panel of fitters to help you find out which of the 2024 irons is best for your game.

Ultimately the best way to find your personal best iron set is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We are in the era of not just maximizing distance but also minimizing the penalty of common misses for each player — this applies to irons just as much as it does with any other club in the bag. And of course, proper set makeup and gapping is essential. This is why, now more than ever, custom fitting is essential to help you see results on every swing you make.

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you by offering recommendations for your individual iron set wants and needs with insight and feedback from the people who work every single day to help golfers get peak performance out of their equipment.

  • Join the discussion about best irons 2024 in the forums!

Best irons of 2024: The process

The best fitters in the world see all the options available in the marketplace, analyze their performance traits, and pull from that internal database of knowledge and experience like a supercomputer when they are working with a golfer.

It’s essentially a huge decision tree derived from experience and boiled down to a starting point of options—and it has nothing to do with a handicap!

Modern iron sets are designed into player categories that overlap the outdated “what’s your handicap?” model, and at GolfWRX we believe it was important to go beyond handicap and ask specific questions about the most crucial performance elements fitters are looking at.

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you determine which category is most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2024: The categories

  • Overall performance
  • Easiest to launch/Slower swing speed
  • Pure enjoyment
  • Most technology-packed

2024 Best irons: Most technology packed

tour edge xj1 driver review

This is the “give me everything you got” list. These irons are the cream of the crop for offering technology to improve feel, distance, and ball speed. The great thing about the technology category is it’s not reserved for higher handicap golfers — it’s for anyone looking to get everything they can out of their game in an iron that also suits their eye.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke

tour edge xj1 driver review

Their story:  At the core of Callaway’s new Ai Paradym Smoke irons is the Ai Smart Face. With the Ai Smart Face, these irons are designed to promote exceptional distance, tight dispersion into the green, and optimal launch in a modern construction. The new shape consists of longer blade lengths, thinner toplines, and optimized sole widths in a bid to create a forgiving, yet streamlined look at address. In addition, an all-new Dynamic Sole Design features a pre-worn leading edge with variable bounce that cuts through the turf with efficiency.

Fitter comments:

  • “That thing is an absolute rocket launcher. For the guy who flips at it, it’s perfect. It definitely launches lower spins less. it just goes forever compared to, you know, compared to a lot of them that we, that we tested.”
  • “I mean, it’s actually probably one of the cleaner-looking kind of game improvement irons. You know, some of them, they can get kind of beefy, but the look of that one that’s very appealing to the eye. The AI technology that Callaway has been using for a couple of years now, it’s generating a ton of ball speed for guys, but also at a point where they’re still getting a lot of peak heights on it. So it’s not like you feel like you’re just hitting bullets out there.”
  • “If a guy is looking to just hit it far, that’s probably the best thing out there. Callaway’s always had like crazy hot iron faces in that mid-size game improvement-type club. And this is just the next version of it. This thing is crazy fast. Shockingly, for how strong the lofts are, the ball still gets up in the air pretty good.”
  • “When it comes to pure technology the Paradym Ai Smoke iron has it all. Super computers helping engineers design the back of the face based on over 250,000 shots make it an amazing tech iron alone.”
  • “Classic Callaway story with face variability that is AI-driven along with material and design. Tons of tech. With Ai Smart Face and a hollow body design, they make it to the top as far as technology goes.”

TaylorMade P790

tour edge xj1 driver review

Their story: Engineers utilized the variables of tungsten weighting, SpeedFoam Air, and internal mass — with an assist from AI — to precisely give golfers what they need in each iron. For example, launch and forgiveness in the long irons. More specifically, TaylorMade is using what the company calls FLTD CG (flighted CG) to strategically position CG throughout the set (lower in the long irons, higher in the short irons). CG is positioned almost a millimeter lower in the long irons compared to previous generations. In the shorter irons, the higher CG positions allowed engineers to dial in spin and promote accuracy.

  • “Best combination of everything. The amalgamation of all irons on the market blended into one mathematically perfect design.”
  • “I think people recognize the name. It’s a very popular club. It stands up to every model in a category.”
  • “That’s the staple in the players distance category. It’s year-in, year-out. It’s tough to beat TaylorMade — they don’t go wrong with that iron, for sure. They make little refinements, but it’s almost like, yeah, just keep making little refinements. Don’t kind of mess that up just because the, I mean, it, it fits such a wide range of players and it’s just such a good iron that fits a wide, wide range of handicaps.”
  • “I think where TaylorMade kind of struggled over the past is getting that spin on the golf club, and I think each generation it just keeps getting better. I think they did an awesome job.”
  • “If it’s not our best-selling iron in the fitting center, it’s always like number two. It’s such a great, great performer across the board. And yeah, it just keeps getting better every year. It’s really awesome; crazy distance on that thing too.”

Titleist T350

tour edge xj1 driver review

Their story: The new T350 irons are still built for maximum distance and forgiveness, but they were redesigned with a hollow-body construction that’s inspired by the T200. Like the T200, the T350 also uses Max Impact Technology behind the face to maximize speed and forgiveness, and dual-tungsten weights in the back cavity. The T350 irons are noticeably larger, and with thicker toplines, than the T200 irons for golfers who need the additional surface area and stability.

Fitter comments:

  • “The T350 is super good. They definitely cleaned it up, cleaned up that topline a little bit and made it…a little bit more compact, a little bit smaller for sure.”
  • “You know, I think is one of those irons that maybe sometimes can get overlooked. I don’t know…some guys, they think ‘Titleist,’ they can’t hit it. If someone’s in this category, it’s always a club you’re gonna have.”
  • “So like this is the first one in that model that’s had like a forged face and, and, and, and I think that just improved the feel of it. Topline to me looks a little bit cleaner and, they do a nice job of hiding the offset doesn’t look quite obnoxious when you look down at it. I don’t know if it’s like the chrome that they put or whatever, but it looks a lot cleaner at address. The iron’s always been super easy to get up in here.”
  • “That type of customer, I know they all want to do is just hit it nice and far. But we’re seeing so many guys come in that just need help getting it airborne in that moderate kind of clubhead speed category. And this thing is probably, if not the easiest, one of the easiest irons in this category to launch. And I think that’s what makes it so great.”
  • “High launch is a key component to this iron. Clean look, with reduced offset and a better look for a players game improvement iron. Players are surprised that this is a game improvement iron based on the looks and package size.”

Srixon ZX5 Mk II

tour edge xj1 driver review

Their story:  MainFrame v2 was developed with an Automated Intelligence process, flex-maximizing variable thickness pattern of grooves, channels, and cavities carefully milled into the backside of ZX5 iron faces for high ball speeds. Not only does MainFrame boost COR, but it also repositions mass away from the face and into the toe and sole for a lower CG for easier launch, more consistency, and forgiveness.

  • “I’m a big believer in the V-Sole. For high-speed guys who want a little forgiveness and are steep, it just doesn’t stick in the ground. Super soft and high launching. Not a ton of offset. It’s also been a good fit for moderate-to-high handicappers.”
  • “So I would say it, it kind of stands out in its category because it does launch higher than its competitors. It also sits in between some of the models, like, it doesn’t directly compete with a hollow cavity and it doesn’t compete with, like the Cobra King Tour. Like, it’s a degree stronger. For a forged iron, it performs great for us. The only problem is that it is a little bit light in a swing weight, so we have to be careful of who we fit.”
  • “It’s definitely one of our more popular irons for sure. You know, you get a guy who wants to play something small but still wants something more forgiving, and they don’t want kind of that full hollow body iron. I mean, that’s definitely one of our best sellers for sure. We’re seeing that a lot of combos — that’s a one iron that you can definitely combo with the ZX7 for sure.”
  • “I think a lot of guys like the concept of the V-Sole with them…If you’re talking an overall package, you know, for the guy that is looking for something clean. That’s a spectacular golf club. Good looks and good feel and great, you know, great performance, and it fits a lot of categories.”
  • “I think the one struggle a lot of companies have with that category is getting something to spin, so to try and give like guys so they don’t get those knuckleball shots or that fly out of the rough that goes 20 yards longer. I kind of think that that’s what I think makes that item so good is you get some spin on it, and I think it, it looks and feels good enough that like it, a guy that’s a mid-single digit can play it and be like, yeah, that’s good enough for me. But it’s also forgiving enough that a guy that’s in that kind of 12-to-15 kind of category if he wants to reach a little bit and play something that might look a little bit better. It just fits such a huge, huge range of players. I think it’s just awesome.”

tour edge xj1 driver review

Their story:  Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever,” the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to two more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation that features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to a solid feel and pleasing impact sound.

  • “The best G.I. iron on the market. Easy to hit and launch while making great ball speed for distance.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. High launch and packed with forgiveness on those off-center hits. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit. So easy to hit and look at for the average golfer.”
  • “Yeah, I mean, that’s definitely a go-to and in the matrix for sure. I mean, it’s just super easy to hit, super forgiving. They don’t mess that iron up.”
  • “Ping does a great job of building golf clubs. Their design is fantastic and it’s not for everybody, you know, it’s not the lowest-spinning club…but it sure is one of the most forgiving golf clubs and most consistent golf clubs. Ping G430 in that category of club, you can have something that a good player who needs a little help maybe can use because it’s consistent across the face, and you can’t do that with some of the other clubs because they’re not as consistent across the face for the ball speeds. It is a monster for us.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit.”

Why Tony Finau is planning to play 2 drivers at the Masters

tour edge xj1 driver review

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt of a piece we originally filed this piece for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. You can read the full piece there.

Now, for the 2024 Masters specifically, Finau is planning to put another Ping G430 LST driver into play, in order to help him on the right-to-left holes at Augusta. The second driver, which is set to replace his 3-wood, will measure about the length of his 3-wood, and it has 10.5 degrees of loft, according to Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates.

“Tony Finau, most likely, will be playing two G430 LST drivers this week; his gamer, and a new shorter 10.5 headed option,” Oates told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday. “In the ramp-up towards The Masters, Tony and his team discussed options to optimize his performance off the tee. In discussing the tee shots around Augusta and second shots, Tony realized he would never hit 3-wood off the ground, minus maybe 8 if it was soft and into the wind.

“With that in mind, we felt it would be worth exploring a driver built to more 3-wood specs – shorter, more loft, etc. We build the driver in Houston and Tony carried it to Augusta to test. Right away it was giving him the performance he was looking for, allowing him to hit a straighter shot off the tee, or even draw it easier than his gamer driver, along with the added forgiveness benefits of using a driver instead of a 3-wood. Tony potentially could use the little driver on 2-7-10-14-17-18, pending course and wind conditions.”

Since Finau’s stock driver swing is grooved for a cut shot, maybe it’s unrealistic that Finau will hit big sweeping draws with the new, second driver option. But, according to Finau, it’s still a useful option, especially since he won’t need the 3-wood much this week.

“The [second] driver really goes straight, so there’s just no fade on it,” Finau told GolfWRX.com. “The draw holes out here, you don’t really have to turn it over, you just can’t hit a fade. But yeah, I’m going with two drivers.”

Exotics XJ1 Driver Brings New Kind of Ultralight Titanium to Market

XJ1_driver_B.jpg

The new Exotics XJ1 driver from Tour Edge shows that innovation in golf equipment isn’t just about interesting ideas, it’s about finding materials that can make those ideas a reality.

We all know that drivers have used primarily titanium for almost 20 years for its lighter weight and high-strength, setting the stage for 460 cubic centimeter drivers with faces that create high flexibility for better ball speeds. And we all know that there are various grades of titanium that have become prevalent. While there have been dalliances with forms of beta titanium, generally drivers have used a titanium alloy known as 6-4, referring to the percentage of aluminum and vanadium used in the alloy. Recently, some manufacturers have been using another grade known as titanium 8-1-1, an aerospace alloy with a percentage of molybdenum in it that makes it lighter to improve its strength to weight ratio. But that’s been about it until now.

Tour Edge’s Exotics line has always been about finding some new material or process to push boundaries and now it’s exploring a new titanium alloy it’s calling Ti 9-1-1 or "Supermetal" for use in the body of the new Exotics XJ1. It combines this new material with a kevlar carbon composite crown piece and tungsten weights in the heel, toe and center portions of the sole.

“Most technologies of the past decade have benefitted players with higher swing speeds eliminating the majority of golfers,” said David Glod, president and founder of Tour Edge. “We have been developing the XJ1 driver for over four years, working on each characteristic of the club, moving critical amounts of weight around for the best results, and waiting for the technology to catch up to our goal of bringing this extremely lightweight driver to the market, which will benefit golfers with real swing speeds.”

The goal of the new construction is to create an overall lighter driver (the 9-1-1 titanium alloy is 10 percent lighter than 6-4 titanium). The standard weight of the head is 192 grams, or about 10 grams lighter than many typical driver head weights. The total weight of the Exotics XJ1 varies between 265 and 290 grams from the lightest flex to the stiffest flex. The 265 grams would be lighter than any mainstream driver in the U.S. market ever. The regular flex version weighs 275 grams and the stiff flex model weighs 285 grams. In the past Cleveland has introduced a 270-gram driver (the Launcher Ultalite XL in 2011) and Wilson's more recent D200 driver checked in at just under 270 grams in 2014.

The XJ1 also uses an SP700 beta titanium face insert for its thinner construction and improved off-center hit flexibility. Glod says the material allows the face insert to occupy a larger area of the total face than is typically found on drivers.

The XJ1 includes a Fujikura Air Speeder shaft that at its lightest flex weighs just 45 grams.

The XJ1 is scheduled to be available November 1 ($700).

The unprecedented strength of 9-1-1 enables it to be thinner and more reactive, even at lower swing speeds. This effect combined with the overall lightness of the driver allows players with moderate swing speeds to generate more club head speed and more distance.
  • The new Kevlar-Carbon crown is ultra-lightweight, durable and extraordinarily strong. This specialized amorphous material weighs a mere 12-grams, saving significant weight and lowering the center of gravity for ideal launch. An added benefit of the Kevlar-Carbon crown is its increased firmness, which results in amplified ball speed higher up on the face.
  • Utilizing SP 700 beta titanium in the face plate provides superior results since it is inherently thinner and more reactive. It also allows the face plate to be much larger than on a normal driver. Along with being larger, the face incorporates thinner edges allowing it to be Robotically Laser Bonded to the body. This process not only saves additional weight; it dramatically increases C.O.R. all over the face.
  • Near perfect weight distribution is achieved in the 460cc head with three tungsten weights including two heel and toe stability bars at 10-grams each. (The 20-grams of weight was moved from the body and crown.) The stability bars widen the sweet spot and increases the M.O.I. substantially for stunning forgiveness. A weighted tungsten screw in the heel is positioned strategically for draw enhancement and faster release of the clubhead through impact. Additional weights are available in a kit; 3, 6, 12, 14 grams.

I'll admit, after hitting their last driver at club clash and being surprised as heck, I want to hit this one. Add in the use of tungsten and they have my attention. Sure, the whole "Supermetal" think is a bit kitschy, but still. Of course, most will see the recommended 699 price tag and flip out, though its almost assuredly going to be found places for less, one thing TEE has always done is high end pricing, and with the tech/metals in this one (tungsten is expensive) I'm not all that shocked. Though yeah, there has to be fear of pricing yourself out here. I'm curious about it, I really am.

Very intriguing driver. I dont know much about the company and havent tried much of their stuff at all (except the run at CLub Clash which if I recall was very well received). Like the lighter weight option and am intrigued by the forgiveness/ball speed retention high on the face

the lightness of crowns these days are crazy. Use of tungsten weights jump out at me. Love how they say nearly perfect weight distribution. Nerd side of me immediately thinks of the first Harry Potter when Hermoine asks how can someone be nearly headless haha. Back to the club, like the lightweight shaft offering and the talk of faster acceleration through the hitting zone.

I really am intrigued by this one. Price point is a little high but this definetly has my attention. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Wow, there's some serious tech in this one. It conceptually rminds me of another very recent release and with these guys working on the driver for four years I wonder how ticked they are they got beat to market with the concept.

the price tag to me seems more about the materials than anything else, so it doesn't offend me. if it was an iterative release with a couple tweaks and was priced this high, i might be put off. but this seems ok. the tech is cool. difficult thing just for me and my game is lightweight usually means bad swings, and center face will be better results than faster mishits. that's just me, though. seems like there is a huge segment of the market that would benefit from this, although pricing likely prevents most from ever even trying it.

$699? Holy crap. Supermetal had better be pretty amazing, and this had better put up crazy numbers to justify that sort of a price tag (in my opinion).

I'm not offended at that price. It takes me out of their target audience immediately without even hitting it though. Which is ok. At this price I am thinking irons not driver. Having said that I have hit TEE woods before and have come away impressed in the past. I like the looks of this one aesthetically. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

I really want to hit this. Best fairway metals in the business, bagging a new to me XCG5 3W, and I also have a XCG7 4W for those days when I want an extra hybrid or wedge. Being that I buy a lot of clubs used or on sale, my entire bag now may not have cost much more than $699. I won't be getting this one anytime soon if it really costs that much, but I'll still swing it at demo day.

This looks pretty interesting. Really intrigued by the use of tungsten. Price is a bit steep but I'll still try to hit it at some point.

I won't lie, I'm super curious to the sound.

The "E" on the sole bugs me because I can't get it out of my head that it's a "3." I have a TEE driver that I dropped a million dollars on and don't like. Yet I LOVE my TEE fairway, so I'm not totally spoiled on the brand. And then again…at $699 that metal technology would have to be VERY GOOD for me.

Interesting sounding club. A bit on the steep side on the price, but understandable with the tech and materials in there. Would love to get some swings with it. Curious to see if all the tech actually produces results.

Every time I've demoed one of their clubs I've always been happy with the results and I'm sure this one will be the same. I just wish they could push me over the hump to actually game one on the course.

TEE fairway woods are sooooo good. I have never seen great #'s for myself from a driver from them. I am seeing this as a good fit for my dad, he is 69 and could use any additional speed into the ball he can get! I will have to figure out a way to get him to check it out.

I liked the EX9 and would try this out if somebody let me hit it. This would have to be galaxies better than the EX9 to get me to hand over $699.

The good news with Exotics is that you wait a year and the price drops big time. I'm very interested in this. I generally haven't liked their drivers, but love the fairways and hybrids. Would really like to test this one out! But I won't be dropping $700 on it new. (Says the guy with the $500 Exotics fairway wood...that I only paid $180 for...)

Golf News Net: What you need to know about golf

PREVIEW: Tour Edge Exotics XJ1 driver

tour edge xj1 driver review

Tour Edge Golf has a new driver that's feather-light, and they say it goes mega far.

The company has introduced its new Exotics XJ1 driver, with the story being that it's an ultra lightweight club designed to generate more swing speed while not costing the player anything in the way of material performance.

With the XJ1, Tour Edge is using a new titanium material in the body, called 9-1-1. It is 10 percent lighter than 6A4v titanium, allowing engineers to save significant weight in the body. The 9-1-1 material responds better for players with slow to medium swing speeds, offering additional distance. The crown is also designed with weight savings in mind, using a thin Kevlar-Carbon material that comes in at 12 grams, right in with what we're seeing in the new Big Bertha Fusion offerings from Callaway. The face plate is made from SP 700 beta titanium, allowing the company to make the plate larger because of its thinner nature, improve coefficient of restitution (how much energy gets back to the ball at impact) across the face.

The XJ1 has three tungsten weight, with a pair of 10-gram heel and toe stability bars, which are made possible by weight savings from the other materials in the head. The bars, the company claims, enlarge the sweet spot and moment of inertia across the face for forgiveness. A tungsten port screw in the heel is designed to encourage a draw. A weight kit is available to dial in for individual players.

The stock shaft is the 45-gram Fujikura Air Speeder, making Tour Edge the first company to use this shaft in a production run.

The Tour Edge Exotics XJ1 driver will be available Nov. 1 in 9-, 10.5- and 12-degree models for $700 each.

that one was ultra-light with pretty weak shaft...more on game-improvement/beginner side

Ok thanks. I haven’t seen many reviews on it. I figure for a 100$ try it, maybe throw a different shaft in it.

The XJ1 represented an attempt by Tour Edge to make a driver that would increase distance for golfers with lower swingspeeds. It had a crown made of a 9-1-1 titanium alloy not previously used in golf clubs. This lightened the overall head, while setting it atop a 30-gram tungsten sole weight which increased launch height and MOI.

I had similar problems with the original RBZ fairways which had 45-gram Matrix XCon5 shafts. The shaft translated to frequent hard left misses.

In defense of the XJ1 long clubs, I have seen players use them and speak highly of them. Just too light or me. One club fitter suggested "the XJ1 just came and went too fast."

As for me, I'm largely playing the XRail FWs, and am trying the EXS driver this month.

Conditions Rating Guide

Shows virtually no traces of wear, may have been hit one or more times in controlled conditions. May show signs of very minor "shop wear" (i.e. a single cosmetic blemish), but still full of NEWNESS!

Clubs have seen minimal usage and are in top of the line preowned condition. You may see some minor or faint cosmetic blemishes (i.e. very light scuffing and/or scratching). Typical wear that you will see on an Excellent condition club is normal ball marks that are lightly visible on the face, minimal scratching to the crown, soul and edges. Shaft has no noticeable wear.

Clubs have seen normal usage for an extended period of time or at least one season, the wear you’ll notice will be typical of the age of the model. All of the wear is purely cosmetic, and will not in any way affect the performance of the club. Typical wear you’ll see on a Very Good condition club is normal ball marks and scratching on the face, normal scratching on the sole, faint dings and nicks on the crown and/or around the edges of the head, light scratches, paint chips, paint blemishes on or around the crown. Shaft has minimal wear.

Clubs offer a great value for someone who isn't as interested in cosmetics, but cares about performance. Shows frequent too heavy use, but does not show any signs of abuse. All clubs in Value Condition are in 100% playable condition, which is the perfect option for the player looking for more bang for the buck. Typical wear you’ll see on a Value condition club is moderate to heavy ball marks and scratching on the face, moderate to heavy scratching on the sole, moderate to heavy dings and nicks on the crown and/or around the edges of the head, moderate to heavy scratches, and paint chips/ blemishes on or around the crown. Shaft will have noticeable wear.

About This Item

9-1-1 Titanium - The Supermetal!

An industry first, the XJ1 features a revolutionary 9-1-1 titanium body which is remarkably 10% lighter than 6A4V titanium, allowing engineers to save significant weight in the body. The unprecedented strength of the 9-1-1 enables it to be thinner and more reactive, especially at lower swing speeds. This launch effect combined with the overall light weight of the driver allows players with real swing speeds to generate more club head speed and more distance.

Amorphous Kevlar-Carbon Crown

  • An unprecedented new amorphous material is ultra-lightweight, durable and extraordinarily strong. This revolutionary material weighs a mere 12-grams, saving significant weight and lowering the center of gravity for ideal launch.

Laser-Bounded, Amplified Face Plate

  • SP 700 beta titanium face plate is thinner and more reactive. Laser bonding also allows the face plate to be much larger than on a normal driver.
  • Ultra stable lightweight Fujikura Air Speeder Shaft is 45 grams of added power. Tour Edge is the first company to use this shaft in production.
  • Headcover Included!

XJ1 Shafts

  • Certified Pre-Owned Clubs may be personalized or stamped with "DEMO".

Hi guys, I want to thank MGS for selecting me to review one of the products this year!  I am excited to be chosen for this driver in particular on the heels of reading about it and being quite intrigued.

I must point out that I have yet to have much experience with this driver other than holding it, taking photos of it, and trying to figure out “why does this club feel so odd”.    Aha ..... the driver I received and the subsequent replacement shaft that I received both had the driver measuring at 44” playing length requested. (explanation to follow )  Which turns out to be exactly as requested by me.  I was wrong in thinking my current driver was under 45".  It is at minimum 45.5 and I like it, but have always thought it was cut short as per my request when I changed from Rogue to HZRDUS. That request was not granted accurately.

My current profession is High School Golf Coach which is enjoyable overall.

As for me and my game - I’ve been playing since 6 or so and have enjoyed spells of pretty solid golf and experienced spells of horrific golf as well while chasing new techniques or some magic move to change my fortunes forever.  Hdcp has been generally mid to lower single digits until about 5 years ago. Since then it is a bit more hit and miss 86 one day, 73 the next with neither day looking like the same person.

I’m 48 years old and definitely not the tallest cat around coming in at around 5’5”.  As I’ve aged with scoliosis(fusion and steel rod) sometimes I have trouble getting things moving to begin the day.  With all that said, my driver SS comes in around 105 average. 102 when back is acting up and 108-ish when I’m able to get the body moving well.  My better ball flight is med/high draw with a tournament safe drive that is a bit lower draw to chase fairways. My miss is the common low hook or block right.

When going right tempo is quicker than most(think Nick Price if Nick Price were having a very bad day).  When going wrong tempo is spastic.

I only get to play a few times every couple of months during the school year so most of my rounds are between May and September these days.  It is my plan to get things going this year and hope that the TE EXS driver is a big contributor to this bounce back season!

Currently I am playing with M1(original model) with ProjectX HZRDUS Red 6.0 62g.  I enjoy this setup better than any other I’ve used since my 983k moons ago. I would guess my average driver these days is in the 255-270 range depending on various factors.  I have general confidence in what I have now so to switch to the the EXS it will mean it really is what they say!

What I look forward to discovering is whether the EXS will allow me to go after driver as aggressively as I want without losing connection with the shaft while also allowing me to dial it back 20-30yds and simply hit a low draw that chases center cut. Also if the forgiveness is as good as advertised!!!

Oops - almost forgot …….

The setup that I requested has Tensei CK Blue shaft in stiff 60 grams at 44”, I chose the basic Lamkin stock UTX grip.

This is a very attractive driver and has quite a bit of adjustment capability as well.

The three areas of intrigue to me when it comes to the tech in this driver are the

ROLLFACE TECHNOLOGY (incorporates modified bulge & roll on the toe to help straighten out shots)

VARIABLE FACE THICKNESS(variance in thickness to increase forgiveness)

SLIPSTREAM SOLE(increased swing speed - I need that !!!)

Hope to get the opportunity to share with you guys how well they work for me relative to my current M1 setup.

I have put TOUR EDGE and MGS folks through the paces so far with shaft length snafu, and I couldn't be more impressed.  Thank you all.

TOUR EDGE EXS DRIVER – Official MGS Forum Review by badams69

This review is entered with mixed emotions for me.  I fully intended to film and spend loads of time with this club but that never materialized for a variety of reasons. But I hope something I share helps at least one of you in deciding whether this is a club you should look at or not.

Spoiler alert: …. This is a solid golf club.

It took awhile for me to get going with the EXS mostly due to my error when initial club was delivered. Then - good news for me, bad for my review, I guess.  I became a candidate to take over a fairly prominent high school golf program. This kept me away from the golf course until late last week for several process related reasons until becoming the final choice late last week.  It has been all golf since.

My initial intro to the to the EXS was horrendous and I almost just sent it back.  First three on course tee shots were in a tournament and all resulted in penalty on holes I didn’t know could be penal. So I reconstructed my setup and swing and made adjustments in the settings (tried ‘em all) and the results are as follows:

Looks ( 9 out of 10 points) Not perfect but CLOSE!

The shape of the driver to my eye is very positive. It is a mix of pear and extended but it did take a bit of getting used to - after which time it is a nice sight.

The graphics of the club are classic mixed with energetic/modern - very good color scheme and placement of graphics in my opinion.

Overall the look of the driver head is very pleasing - I personally do not like the shaft color and that is a large part of the point deduction (I realize it is not the EXS driver - but that is their only stock offering - so it kinda is a part of the equation)

For drivers in this price range it is superior! For drivers at any price point it stands up tall - unless it simply doesn’t suit your eye.  Ideally, for my eye, the looks would be slightly more classic but that isn’t the golf world we are in today. Please don't infer that this is an offensive club head, just stating my druthers.

Sound & Feel ( 9 out of 10 points)

I found the sound of this driver to be at worst unobtrusive and at best quite nice.  I prefer a muted thwack sound but also nice to have enough sound to draw attention - when you nail it!!!! The EXS has both !!!!

The best way I can describe it - if some drivers are an old rusty truck door slamming - this is a lexus securely slamming shut. Others may disagree.

As for feel until I finally caught one I wasn’t sure what to think. I could tell I hit it but always wondered “is that it???” ..........  THEN  F I N A L L Y - BOOM!!!! - it was like a cushioned dynamic shock.  Felt splendid and powerful!!!

In my opinion mishits were not as pronounced as an M1 but maybe more noticeable than I expected.  It was less consistent across the face than I expected but more consistent than prior PING, CALLAWAY and Taylormade drivers I have used. (prior models)

When I hit a shot 8/10 and up it is a very workable and useful club, on the lesser shots I really felt they were surprisingly weak at impact - I have no proof - but I sense this is the shaft more than the head.

HSO1ZvJGratW150SRlvaBqm0TaOeXHp9bBU7RnYpGjQc-p_ocJ3xNFen8r4qay2oTsOhlkl4DKLQIu1zvuHaWCj5W39Y41_Qcd_7G_TvBbf8A0SH_59XdEzUsADBQZtOIQVRwGuv

This chart plots just over 30 tee shots -the shortest is 234 and longest with EXS is the just shy of 331 above.

WW6wseIJyK0NkD7PMgK08I55EJUBd4lJmpf3MLAqE3TSjzzogvt0PFi_7uCd38to5CobDkPzsHCQBPruWf2JPIqZ4G9evS5L0p7xlMlEWjT1RJA3wufbvnwPjh-HbbmJhXhJnPEE

All of my better drives with the EXS were hit after I changed to NEUTRAL (9deg /57.0deg lie angle) setting with 3gram in the heel and 9g in the rear.  This takes out a lot of the slice prevention which I do not need.

Basic Characteristics ( 17 out of 20 points) (one point off for every 10 yds off M1 average - petty I know)

Personally I like the flight of the ball off of this driver more than I do with my M1 it is much flatter but not sinking.  I never noticed the ball getting too high with this club no matter the setting I tried.

My pattern is straight(my fade) but mostly right to left, I did not have success hitting a fade with this club but am thinking that will come in time as I have been able to draw it when I want (and hook when I don’t want) more than my current driver which is basically one speed - straight---fall left.

I personally found this driver to be very accurate when struck reasonably well. No worse and likely better than my current club.

The distance with this club is solid.  I have some data that shows what I consider to be serviceable distance numbers for an old guy like me. Average distance with this club on shotscope is about 263yds.  During those rounds I hit M1 three times --- averaging 297. Once I tagged both on the same hole and same line and M1 was 40yds ahead - mentioned above.

🤔

Regarding adjustability - I finally figured out my ideal setting within the last round and a half I played prior to this writing.  I will say that I tried several and can attest that each adjustment did have a significant impact on all facets from timing/release to flight pattern.  My regret is that it took me so long to get that aspect dialed it. It was a hook machine in these hands before that.

BE SURE TO MOVE THE WEIGHTS AROUND!!! This had the greatest impact for me.

Would I want this club in my hand under pressure?  Today- NO. In three weeks - most definitely! There is nothing about this club that makes me doubt that I can hit the shot I would want with a few more reps. Even though I don't love the shaft.

Would I play it over my current club? …… yes/no is all the same to me as each provides different positives and negatives.    I am pleased with this club head in most every way. It is solid and I sense it is more forgiving than my current driver and distance is fine for me.  If I were “gaming” this club I feel I can shoot good scores with (not in spite of) this driver.

What I wish were different in this driver:  1. A different shaft choice.  The shaft is decent but not optimal for someone who at times wants to get on with it and tends to be a little quick. 2. More distance (which may be a shaft related issue).

NUMBERS??? I went to the PGA Superstore and below are my numbers for those of you that may have similar numbers it may help you.  - In fairness this was on a day where my back was stiff and I ultimately had to delete my first 35 shots and chose the only few that I was able to make reasonable contact after getting slightly loose. Three straight days of golf caught up to me.

yk-OOzlSrxqSj5vblOUcofloLlNXqiBGVbC-m_yJHE_tQDDMTK1mvquAADLJMuUxkQHp7AdSKnYxna5ikvKIHCP24h3bdV_TDRCYwwFw-Hn-xjeLyOt796wj_JjoB_cJcO0m3FRZ

On-Course Performance ( 25 out of 30 points)

This is not a club I would, as of today, feel comfortable ‘going after it’ to get more distance.  In fairness this may be related to my swing insecurities - but I don’t have those insecurities when holding my current gamer.  Using the EXS did not change my strategy or goals on any tee box and I never felt as if my game was suffering for using this club.  There are a few times I felt I was benefitting from this club in my hand which asked me to manage my swing a bit more. One of my main goals when it came to this testing was to see if I could hit my version of a “fairway finder” and that came up on the last hole I’ve played with it. I choked down, cut my swing down and although I just knew it was likely doing to be a smothered hook - everything worked out perfect.

Why 5 points off? Well, if you got a new driver wouldn't you want it to add to your game rather than just not disrupt it? I just didn't feel it added anything - but if this changes, I'll update.

Miscellaneous ( 9 out of 10 points)

I will say thank you to EXS for being so good to me during my mistake - not theirs.  The point here is simply because I did not receive a little card that outlined the adjustments (what the settings were).  I didn’t understand why in three shipments I didn't get one.   Also as pointed out previously - I am not a fan of the shaft and really don’t understand in the golf world we are in today - how you could offer only one shaft at no upgrade charge.  This isn’t 1985 or 2005(won't list ALL the years it isn't).

Play it or Trade it? ( 19 out of 20 points)

I am going to PLAY this club until it tells me where it wants to be (in bag or garage) and although this is STAGE 2, I intend to post how that goes.  In reality I have only played three rounds with this club and have an ok average for distance and when put on the monitor my peak performance shows numbers that I feel are solid.  When I get an opportunity to do so and wife isn’t looking, I’ll be replacing this shaft. It is not taking place of M1 yet but just may - more to golf than distance (thank goodness or many of us would have to quit).

Image below shows Shotscope average from EXS and M1 - I only hit M1(297) three times though. Same courses. The EXS (263) average is factoring in a lot of mishits.  I didn’t mishit the M1 on any of the three.

ovRjjyr0muvQemQkMZleK8cpUKyGZilg4iGEA847fKLfEXLkf7yoXJu884a5U6x2e20ITWhVeBeALtmp4IXyEQfUJrWDU9qxVFRQawb7IIuWamhMp0T35eCRieG4qPFC4DF3Ptm8

In conclusion - is this the best driver on the market for me or you?

MAYBE - and certainly worth a shot!

Yes or No would depend solely on what you like and how you feel about the $$ value of a driver.  Also whether or not you buy used or new.

If it were me and I were in the market for a new purchase and $300 seems like a lot, then $550 or $650 is really going to hurt and based on my experience isn’t going to change your results much - provided you get the right shaft.

I coach a golf team and if any of our players said they were looking at this club or had purchased this club it would be met with enthusiasm (with the shaft caveat mentioned already).

Stage One – Rob Introduction - 5/22/19

Me.jpeg.832d1d3a64d1ada41f3ae1941ebe8147.jpeg

IMG_20190507_153115.jpg.02d9e7a8cc939c361922f9c5e7910efe.jpg

The EXS 460cc head features premium Japanese exotic metals; TSP 910 Beta Titanium face plate featuring Variable Face Thickness Technology and a 8-1-1 Titanium chassis. The TSP 910 Beta Titanium face has been made even thinner and lighter in the EXS over previous Exotics driver models to produce a greater spring-like effect.

Engineers paired the superior TSP 910 Beta Titanium face plate with the exceptionally light Carbon Fiber Crown and with additional Carbon Fiber located on the toe of clubhead, allowing weight to be strategically repositioned lower and deeper in the head for optimal spin and creating an extremely high MOI. The Dual Carbon Fiber Technology also helped Tour Edge engineers to significantly improve the acoustics of the driver and enabled them to account for the gram weight of the FTS weights and the adjustable hosel.

A new RollFace Technology incorporates modified bulge and roll on the toe to create straighter shots for shots hit off the toe, which is where the majority of miss-hits with a driver are made. In conjunction with the sweet-spot enhancing Variable Face Thickness technology, the RollFace makes this the most forgiving driver face ever produced by Tour Edge.

The aerodynamics in the EXS driver are greatly enhanced by a more sloping crown and wider speed channels on the sole. The new, more tapered head profile also reduces aerodynamic drag.

An ultra-premium Tensei CK Blue 2G shaft series by Mitsubishi Chemical is the chosen stock shaft for the EXS driver. Extremely light yet extremely stable throughout, the Tensei Blue CK features advanced materials like Carbon Fiber and Kevlar mixed with other lightweight materials that weigh in the 50-70 gram range depending on flex."

In an up close inspection there is NOTHING about this club that would indicate it should cost less than the $499+ price that other OEM's are charging.  The only thing that was slightly off was some glue in the seems of the carbon fiber on the sole and that is nitpicking at best.

EXS carbon crown weave:

IMG_20190507_155733.jpg.36130db4cfc3bab46a169e5c7f710fa4.jpg

So far I've been able to get the EXS out to the driving range and compare it side by side with a number of drivers.  I've also been playing around with the settings and weights to optimize the performance for what I am seeing on the range.  Next steps are to get out and play quite a few rounds as well as get some launch monitor numbers and really get it dialed in to my swing.

I won't give away too much until Stage 2 but let's just say that initial testing has been looking VERY promising....STAY TUNED!

IMG_20190508_151738.jpg.afb2a62d0cb6cf9f02409b5c81c92581.jpg

Everything else about the looks of this club are top notch.  The finish looks ultra premium with all the carbon fiber and blue colored paint trim.  The black/blue color scheme looks really classy with the shade of royal blue giving just the right amount of color pop without being too over the top.  My only small observation about the finish of the club was the slightly sloppy glue around the edges of the carbon fiber plates on the sole.  You really had to look closely to notice this though, but I would have probably seen this if it was sitting on the shelf at the golf store and deducted another point for it.

Sound & Feel ( 7 out of 10 points)

As it does with most clubs, the sound and feel changes with this driver depending on what type of ball you are hitting with it.  It has a much more higher pitched metallic sound than all of the carbon fiber would lead you to believe it would have.  I wouldn’t call it clanky sounding but if you hit a harder two piece range ball or a harder compression ball, the sound can get a little higher pitched and a touch on the hollow sounding side.  When playing my normal urethane gamer balls though, the sound is just fine and not offending at all.  The sound also changes depending on where you make contact so I could easily tell where my mis hits were based on the tone of the strike.  I did end up adding just a few grams of hot melt to the inside of the head which just help to take the edge off of the higher pitch when hitting harder golf balls. I usually don’t mind a louder sounding driver as long as the pitch isn’t offensive but overall I prefer a slightly more muted “thwack” sound.  Compared to something like the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero, this club sounded fantastic!

Basic Characteristics ( 17 out of 20 points).

I’m going to bullet point the next section for ease of reading:

  • Trajectory – Quite a bit lower than I expected for the default 9.5* setting w/ a mid launch shaft.  I was hitting low-mid bullets with the standard setting out of the box.  I usually play 9-9.5* drivers and sometimes have to adjust them a little lower depending on the club but I had to adjust this club UP to the +1 setting at 10.5*.  Once I moved the loft up a degree I was very surprised at how high I was hitting tee shots and it was way above my normal flight window.  This initially concerned me but when I saw where my shots were landing, I was really surprised.  The trajectory was high but the shots didn’t balloon which tells me the spin was under control.   MyGolfSpy just released their center of gravity reports for this year and stated that the EXS measured in at a lower than stated loft of 9* instead of 9.5 so maybe I have a lower lofted club as well.  If that is true then I guess I might have it set on 10*. The higher setting gave me approx. 5-8 yards additional carry over the standard setting.
  • Workability – I really don’t try and “work” my driver but I didn’t have any trouble hitting cuts with this club.  Since I adjusted the loft up a degree it closed the face.  I usually play a pretty straight shot to a slight fade so the closed face kept me hitting a straight ball.  I also had the heavy weight in the draw setting to minimize a right miss.
  • Accuracy – I felt this club had great accuracy and had no problem hitting it exactly where I wanted to.  It was very reliable and with the closed face I was able to clear my body out and not worry about losing it right.  I was surprised that the MOI numbers when the weight was in the draw setting (6962 combined – similar to the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero) weren’t that high compared to a lot of the current drivers on the market this year.  When the weight is in the back position the MOI goes up quite a bit more (7493 combined) and sits in the same company as the Titleist TS3 and Tommy Armour Atomic drivers.  The COG is very close the neutral axis with the weight in the rear which would explain the lower spin rates.

468407620_EXSMOIChart.png.1c460f67405ffb3ad1a02ad77c704238.png

Prior to this year I was your average weekend golfer and played in a friendly work league. I’m self taught with tips from friends and family. This year I decided to join the local men’s league so I’ve added tournament golf to my weekly round. What use to be 10-15 rounds a summer is now more like 30-40 rounds. I also discovered YouTube and watch countless videos on every golf instructional topic imaginable. As a former collegiate athlete, I am competitive by nature. I love the game because of the unique challenges each round. I love practicing and the drive to get better so a range session is just as fun for me.

Personal Golf Stats:

My handicap was 22, but now after some bad tournament starts rose to 25.2. The goal this summer is to get it below 20. Most guys I play with in the men’s league are better than me. My work league, I’m middle of the pack.

Swing tempo is on the faster end and continually remind myself to slow down. Driver swing speed hovers around 95-98, might push 100 on occasion as I’ve been taking lessons focusing on swing path and not coming over the top. Here is a swing video:

Typical ball is high with a slight fade with a typical miss being slice right. I get lazy and come over the top trying to overpower things. It would be tough to say I have a true strength compared to most. For those in 20+ handicap range, my iron play was my “strength” and I was terrified of Driver. I took some lessons this year solely hitting my 7/8 irons and now my strength is the driver/woods off the tee. I’m starting to get the irons back though after some increased focus. I’ll carry my driver 260+. Putting is average, mostly two putts. I’ve also discovered some consistency in my chipping gaining confidence around the green.

Current gamer is TaylorMade M2. I wasn’t fit for it, going to Golf Galaxy off the used rack. I’ve loved it for 12 rounds this year. My #1 priority with the driver is hit fairway taking penalty areas out of play, I’ll take chances, reaching the P5 in 2, but I’ve tried to focus on better course management to get my handicap down. Typical club into par 4s is a 9I (145).

I won’t regurgitate the OEM claims ( click here ). The claims by the OEM I’ll be paying attention to and putting to the test over the next few months include:

  • Flight Tuning System
  • RollFace Technology
  • SlipStream™ Sole

The box was sitting in my living room and my brother in-law asked what’s Tour Edge?

2.thumb.jpg.e70a5424c7ee8177fa1ce32f89d2dd2b.jpg

That was my initial thought as I was reading MGS. I remember seeing some signage at the local shops but hadn’t ever taken a look or hit a club. Cheap driver, cheap results right? I’ve always been drawn to the bigger brands. After reading up on drivers the last few months, I’m willing to look past brands.

Specs: 10.5 Loft / Mitsubishi CK Blue 60 Stiff Shaft / .25” long (45.75”) / Midsize Grip. There weren’t significant shaft options to choose from. I’m 6’4, a bigger/athletic build, so the stiff shaft and slight increase in shaft length really helped. Grip options were meh, I’ll be putting a GP Align eventually.

7.thumb.jpg.90f48faa2fbe45b6f245da6da34a68f4.jpg

At first look, I was impressed with the aesthetics. It is a great looking driver, maybe I’m bias but I love the blue accents (my favorite color). It doesn’t look like a “value” priced driver that’s for sure.

5.thumb.jpg.4b76076e580498c486f2c81fb4a63be8.jpg

Over the next handful of months, I will be testing the EXS on the range, on the course, with my SC200, and launch monitors at my local facilities as often as possible. I’ll throw on an Arccos to track stats as well. I fully intend to focus on evaluating the Tour Edge Claims and providing candid feedback to the MGS community, especially those higher handicappers where I can relate.

I’ve had it on the course twice and a few range sessions with promising results. The launch monitors and SC200 are ready to show me some data and validate the OEM claims. It hasn’t earned a spot in my bag permanently yet, but it has a chance…more to come!

Follow me on Instagram (@jones_zs) and Twitter (@Joneszs) . I’ll be sure to post pics/videos of my rounds/swings there too. If there is anything specific you want to know or want me to test...don't hold back!

Stage Two - The Review 7/3/19

Tour Edge Exotics EXS Driver – Official MGS Forum Review by @ZJBogey2

This Driver has been put through the ringer the last 6 weeks or so. Outside of hitting my previous TM M2 on the range a handful of times for comparison, this EXS Big Stick has been in my bag for each round I’ve played (roughly 10). I’ve tested it on the range, in the hitting bays, and of course on the course. I’ve taken it out of the bag just to hit it when I would normally play it safer off the tee and I’ve hit it on the range more than I probably should have…my short game and lack of practice can bear witness to that. If I had to put a number on total strokes with this bad boy, it would have to be close to 250-300. I’ve toyed with the loft settings and weight distribution (not to the extent of a mad scientist Bryson or club maker savant @03TRDBlack). The biggest thing with this review is the price point vs performance, and any tradeoffs.

**disclaimer, I had some cool videos/pictures on my brother-in-laws GoPro, but he hasn’t been able to get them to me.

Looks (9 out of 10 points)

I think the look of the club is wonderful. I would compare it to the Kia sports car you see drive by, and you do a double take thinking it might have been a “higher” class ride. If I saw the club on the rack at the store, it would pop and catch my eye. The combination of the blue and carbon fiber ties together nicely with a good balance. It’s not obnoxious, but not dull. The general shape seemed a little larger to me than what I was accustom to me and the slightly closed face at address took a bit getting used to for me. I kept second guessing my alignment and grip before just finally accepting it. The alignment aid is simple but does the trick. Thinking to other Drivers on the market, in my opinion, it’s not as obnoxious as the Epics, more laid back looking than a TM M2-6, but has more life than a G410.

I’m taking off one point because a small chip in the paint/carbon fiber on the top was noticeable and not sure how it got there. Probably from one of my many mishits, but I hadn’t ever experienced this with prior drivers/woods.

Sound & Feel (5 out of 10 points)

The sound of the club is the largest detractor to me. I just couldn’t get use to the “tingy” or “clunky” sound. It reminded me of a “dead” baseball bat. Even on my best shots, 280+ down the middle of the fairway (granted few and far between), I never loved the sound. Others in my groups would also notice the sound. Similar to the sound, the feel was always kind of meh and dull. I never really felt like I struck the ball well (even when I did). It was kind of a muted but harsh sound. My personal preference is that smooth, pop of a fresh baseball bat sound where there is no doubt a bomb was just unleashed. The sound and feel was generally consistent though, and felt and sounded the same rather I shanked it, sliced it, power hooked it, or hit a Volvik Long Drive torpedo.

For me, it did have an impact on my game but the more rounds I played, the less pronounced that impact was. The sound made me think I hit it 230-240 so that was a mental hurdle I had to get over. Despite the sound and feel, the performance did not drop off.

Basic Characteristics (18 out of 20 points)

  ●         Trajectory – Significantly higher than my gamer M2. Even adjusting the loft settings, it was higher than I expected. Sticking with the baseball reference, the trajectory gave me the feeling of a warning track fly ball that would get hung up in the sky.

●         Workability – I’m a 20+ handicap…I don’t work the ball. The only workability my ball gets is on the mishits trying to avoid a cart path or tree limb.

●         Accuracy – This is what stands out to me the most. Mishits, average hits, perfect strikes…I was consistent hitting my target. First few range sessions, I thought I was hitting it well, 275, 280, bombs for me and relatively straight…yeah yeah yeah, just the range this won’t translate. Well, as I brought it out on the course I noticed significant improvement in my accuracy. I started getting more frustrated when I didn’t hit a fairway because I started becoming accustom to hitting them with this bad boy. I had a real tough time making the ball go right and slice….thats the biggest win right there.

●         Distance – On the course, I thought it was always consistently longer than what I normally felt I would be hitting…however when in the hitting bays, and diving into the numbers, it was on average 15 yards shorter than my M2.   For me those 15 yards aren’t a big deal to me and I would take the accuracy improvement and I saw over the distance of my old gamer. The distance was also consistent where my confidence grew and I knew exactly where it was going to land (as long as it was in play and not in the woods).

●         Forgiveness – Very forgiving club. My mishits would lose some distance as expected, but the line would be close to what I was intending. This club will stay in my arsenal of too many clubs primarily for this reason. Good day or bad day, I know what Im going to get.

●         Adjustability – Nothing special to what is available on other clubs. The movable weights did seem to have a lower quality feel to them and I felt like I could easily strip them. This would get the lowest grade in the section.

●         Pressure – I played in a Member/Member club event this past weekend. My partner was a 5 HC. Two holes to go, we are up one and playing in a modified alternate shot format for these two holes. My partner miscalculated and hit his in the water so pressure was on me to hit a playable ball. Normally, I would club down to a 3 or 7W and just get it in play…but this driver, with the forgiveness and accuracy, I stepped up not wanting to let him down, having full confidence in the EXS.

●       I was extremely pleased with the accuracy, consistency, and forgiveness. Going back to the price point, you are getting.

●       The biggest detractor of this club for me is the sound and feel. It’s all mental but a difficult hurdle to get past.

On-Course Performance (27 out of 30 points)

I’ve posted some of my distance stats and fairways hit in previous posts. My average distance using the EXS is 277 (low of 250 with one at 320, an anomaly!). Fairways hit are at 59%, if I expanded that to the next cut, I imagine it would be about 80% with most misses left (I cant stress how different this is for me because historically, it’s always been right). If I compared this to my M2 I bet the low/high range are a wider spread, with misses right and a sub 50% accuracy rate. Typically, it was leaving me with a wedge in hand but more importantly it was leaving me with a decent, playable lie.

This wasn’t the biggest test MGS has, but I couldn’t be more thrilled that I was selected because I discovered a club I might not have otherwise. This club performs, and performs well. Adding in the price point, it blows it out of the park. I’ve recommended it to at least 20 people through my men’s league and friends. If you’re worried about pony up $500+ for a driver, then this is the club for you. If you don’t care about price and want a solid performing, accurate, forgiving club without sacrificing much distance…this club is for you. Wrapping up this test, I can honestly say I will be giving Tour Edge a look anytime Im in the market for getting a new club to whack around the course with.

I would suggest some improvement to the feel and quality of the weights in future iterations given they just felt a little cheap. At the price point, I wouldn’t change much. This club improved my score by 4 or 5 strokes most rounds just by the confidence I had in the accuracy and forgiveness to help me keep the ball in play. Some of that can also be attributed to an increased focus on just improving overall but the club helped no doubt.

111.png.923fa61ed366a2d2bc9f8c3d96c774fc.png

Miscellaneous (10 out of 10 points)

I’m basing this on the compliments I received when partners saw or swung the club. They loved the look of it. On top of that, the price is as good of a value as you’ll find.

Play it or Trade it? (14 out of 20 points)

This one is tough for me. I loved the results and performance the club gave me but I never could quite adjust and get use to the sound of the club. I keep going back to the thought that it just sounds like a dead baseball bat (results don’t reflect that!). That is a mental hurdle Im not quite sure I can jump and don’t want extra thoughts in my mind while swinging. Objective qualities perform with anything out there, but that subjectivity of the sound is going to vary by golfer. I’ll keep the driver around but we’ll be friends with benefits AKA I’ll keep my options open and trying other big sticks. If I try out a few more over the summer and don’t have the same performance results, this one is absolutely sticking. The golfer that would benefit most from this product is the cost conscious golfer that wants to have the tech of a larger brand. Where budget isn’t a factor, other clubs will have more fitting options that would probably end up steering folks that way but this wasn’t a big sticking point for me.

The more expensive the club, doesn’t necessarily correlate to the performance of the club. This club confirms that for me and opened my eyes to the options out there.   If you’re looking for something fairly priced with above average performance this club has to in the running and given some swings. Forgiveness, accuracy, consistency are the things I noticed swing after swing, round after round. The final number is about what I was expecting, in that B range. A solid performer!

Final Score : (83 out of 100 points)

This should be a great review, Tour Edge has a reputation for great fairway woods. It's going to be interesting to see if a $299 driver can keep up with the more popular OEM's. This is a great group of testers, and I can't wait to hear what y'all think. Sent from my SM-G955U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

So far my initial range sessions have been really impressive. It's definitely living up to the bang for the buck. More info coming soon...

Can't wait to see how these stack up to your gamers.  Bring on the reviews!

I'm most interested too as I recently purchased one and it's been in play now perhaps 1.5 months and around 8-9 rounds. I keep telling myself to consider a little added weight in the rear port. My distance has increased which is good but I've decided that's mostly due to my lower ball flight. I ditched the stock Tensei Blue S shaft as it was a non-starter for me.

Good luck guys. I'll be watching and commenting.

It really is refreshing in the world of $500+ drivers who all claim that looks and tech have to = $$$, to see those claims debunked with a driver like this. It really does have the potential to check all of the boxes. Can't wait to follow! the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

I hope it's ok for me to make comments about my EXS experience in this topic. I think you guys are going to like the EXS very much. Today I had my lowest round of the year so far. +2. I've been teetering on the brink of going low for the past few weeks. My game today was solid tee to green. But... my EXS set it all up. Who says it's bad to drive for show? I only had one bad tee shot all day where driver was used. Everything else with the EXS was long in the mow. I've suggested here in the forum and to myself to add a little more weight in the rear of the head but now I'm having reservations. I liked everything about my ball flight and distance today. Funny how a good ground changes your thoughts. But actually, my driving with the EXS has been generally good recently. Perhaps I'm finally beginning to grow into the club after a 5 year successful run with the SLDR.

What shaft did you get to replace the Tensie Blue S? Just curious

JB I had a spare Fujikura Speeder 57-S like I have in my SLDR. I pulled the EXS tip/adapter from the Tensei and put it on the Speeder. It made a complete difference to me in how the EXS played - performed. I guess it just goes to show how important a shaft can be. Without the right shaft for your swing profile no club/driver will live up to it's potential IMO.

I'll have my Stage 1 up mid-week. After a few range sessions and putting the club in the bag this weekend for 36 holes, my feelings are still mixed. More deets coming soon!

Looking forward to this one! At $299, I bet this is a steal.

Great job !  You're exactly right and it was one of the first things I thought of.... 299 for that driver is an absolute steal of a deal!  That looks just like drivers that are 200 dollars more.

So far so good! I have to say the driver looks extremely high end for a 300 price point!

:titleist-small:

The slight triangular shape is right on the edge of being strange looking.  I'm fully ok with a triangular look as long as it's longer from front to back than it is from heel to toe.  The Callaway Fusion is like this.  The EXS however almost looks like the face from heel to toe is longer than it is from front to back.  It's easy to get used to but I definitely prefer the more traditional rounder shape of the Exotics XJ1.

Great Stage one @03trdblack   That's the way to kick things off!

Really nice job all around on your stage #1. Enjoyed the photos! I'm currently playing between a 3-5 hcp so our handicaps are close. I'm glad you have so many other drivers including older Exotics to compare performance and shapes, etc. I'll be interested to see how the Tensei shafts works for you. As you might have read - it didn't for me and I swapped with a Fujikura Speeder 57-S. Bingo!

I noticed in your last two photos where you were showing the face. It appeared to me you had changed the loft/face angle setting and in the bottom photo you were centering the strikes nicely as oppose to the top photo. Am I right?

My Stage 1 is up! Check it out!

The first picture was the very first shot I hit with the club with no adjustments or changes to the way it came out of the box.  The bottom photo was the face pattern after my entire first range session.  Great catch though as I did end up doing some adjustments.  I was somewhat surprised at how the 9.5* stock loft setting was giving me a lower flight than I was used to.  I bumped up the loft by a degree and was instantly carrying the ball a solid 8-10 yards further in the air.  I'm more worried about overall carry than roll out in most cases so I'm going to play with it at the higher loft for a while out on the course to see how it does.

I have been getting along with the Tensei shaft so far and I usually agree with shafts with that type of bend profile.  As long as the spin numbers look decent and I continue to hit it straight I'll probably leave it in.  I did end up swapping out the grip since I don't play a glove.  I need all the cord I can get in the hot summer NC months ahead.

How are you knowing or evaluating the bend profile?* Feel? I don't have any clue regarding the bend profile of the Speeder. Just on course results.

*I'm probably one of the least interested (and ignorant) persons in the forum when it come to shaft specs.

I've been a clubmaker for 22+ years so I love to get into the deep technical specs of everything. The Tensei blue shares a similar bend profile to all the Mitsubishi blueboard series shafts in that it has a stiffer butt, softer middle and stiffer tip section. This in comparison to say the whiteboard profile which is softer in the butt and stiffer in the mid and tip sections.

Nice start so far you guys.  Aside from the strong write ups and plenty of great photos, the one thing that stands out is how GREAT this club looks.  My brother is in the market and plays maybe 6-10 times a year.  This would look great in his bag. Thanks for the good work so far.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Driver Review

More in reviews:.

Skechers GO GOLF Blade GF

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver is a very forgiving driver that can work for players at any level.  Great impact sound.  Mid spin, mid/high launch.

Check out the new Tour Edge Exotics E723 driver HERE

Introduction

Tour Edge Exotics is best known for making Tour-style clubs.  It’s right in the name, and it’s proven in their track record across professional tours.  But just because their clubs are great for the pros doesn’t mean they can’t engineer high performing tools for recreational golfers, too.  When TEE tunes their signature technologies for the average player, you get a club like the E722 driver.

tour edge xj1 driver review

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver uses asymmetrical carbon fiber plates in the crown to play a small trick on your eyes.  This head is almost perfectly round, but because the toe-side plate is much larger, it gives the driver a pear-shaped appearance.  In terms of size, the E722 is a standard modern driver that’s slightly elongated from front to back.

Flipping the club over, you’ll see that those carbon fiber panels wrap around to the sole.  Along the middle of the sole, there’s prominent Tour Edge Exotics branding.  A large weight at the rear of the head calls attention to the design focus: high MOI.

tour edge xj1 driver review

The differences between the C722 (right) and E722 drivers at address are minute.   The E722 sits square, the C722 is a hair open.  This difference may seem larger in the picture above because of the camera angle.  Staring at them side-by-side, the E722 is also a little more rounded, making it appear a little bulkier on the toe side.  This makes the face appear a bit taller, though it isn’t.  Without having the clubs next to each other, it would be very hard to tell one from the other.

tour edge xj1 driver review

Sound & Feel

Much like their looks, the sounds of the E722 and C722 [review HERE ] are similar with subtle differences.  That same “crack/snap” is still the dominant feature at impact, but it’s slightly quieter and lower pitched in the E722.  This may be the result of of having only one weight port in the sole.  Regardless, it’s a powerful sound that announces your presence with authority.

As in the C722, the feedback is very precise through the hands .  If you’re paying any attention at all, you’ll know exactly where the ball met the face.  This level of feedback in a highly stable driver is impressive.

tour edge xj1 driver review

Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver has the same adjustable hosel as its brother, but it trades the Front/Back Weighting System for higher MOI.  The E722 driver has a single 30 gram weight at the back of the head which pushes the MOI to 5500 g/cm² (the C722 tops out at 4,950).

Higher MOI means greater stability and more forgiveness .  When you combine the high MOI with TEE’s signature technologies – Ridgeback, Carbon Wrap Tech, and Diamond Face VFT – you have a driver that produces extremely consistent results.

tour edge xj1 driver review

Every performance metric – distance, ball speed, launch angle, and spin – is very stable with the E722 driver .  Even when I was first getting used to this club, the shots kept flying on similar trajectories to similar distances.  If forgiveness is at the top of your wish list, the E722 needs to be one you try this year.

In comparing the E722 and C722 drivers, I found that I was a bit more comfortable with the feel of the C722 which is why it produced better numbers (yes, you can compare the numbers in the two reviews apples-to-apples).  As I noted in the C722 review, the location of the CG can make a big difference in how a club feels to you, and the C722 hit a sweet spot for me.  That said, it would be very easy for me to put the E722 driver in the bag in light of how consistent it is.

In the C722 and E722 drivers, Tour Edge Exotics gives players numerous shaft choices .  From Mitsubishi Chemicals, they offer the TENSEI Orange, White, and Blue.  The latter two come in both 65 and 75 gram versions.  From Fujikura, light weight players can get what they want from the Air Speeder.  Ventus Red and Ventus Blue are also available.  TEE uses their Speed Tested system to recommend shafts to those that can’t be fit in person.

For players that value forgiveness and consistency above all else, the Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver is a must-try.  This club doesn’t lack in distance, but it’s the predictability that really makes it special.  Get it fit with the right shaft and loft and you’ll have a great year off the tee.

Great review. I just got the c722 and could not be happier. Question: if I put a heavier weight in the back would it increase the moi a bit?

' src=

Yes, you’ve got it exactly.

I received the e722 yesterday I have an older tour edge with a draw face and my question is do any of these setting help to make a draw face?

If you set the hosel so the face is closed at address, that should help produce a draw.

What is the best setting to try to hit a draw (draw face) ?

Try the “++” setting.

I’ve got the C721 from last year and love it. I also have a couple Tour Edge hybrids which are great. Tour Edge are a very underrated company. Check them out! You won’t be disappointed. Great Review.

Matt — I am a VERY senior golfer (will leave it up to you to equate that to an approximate age) — and I have a Tour Edge XCG6 that has been in my bag for probably close to 10 years. I love it. But recently I discovered a crack in the shaft, and am vacillating between reshafting and buying a new TE. I’ve been reading about the E722 and like what I’ve discovered. My swing speed is probably right at 70 mph; my desire is forgiveness and as straight a trajectory as possible. I have discovered that I also need a shaft that is about 1″ shorter than “standard” (I’ve shrunk over the years . . .) My index is +/- 25. So: bottom line — would you recommend that E722 for me, and how might I communicate to a provider that I need a shaft adjustment? Yeah — I know I can always choke down, but I’d rather have the feel of a “full grip.” Thanks much!!

As to whether or not the E722 is a fit, my recommendation is to get a fitting. Anything short of an in person fitting is just expensive guess work. When you are ready to order a club, most manufacturers have an option for specifying club length.

' src=

I have just been for a driver fitting and the tour edge e772 was by far the best driver for me, it just felt so much better than the rest and consistant, looking forward to playing with it, really good driver

' src=

How does the e722 compare to my rbz stage 2 driver for performance. 90mph swing speed .

I don’t have any head to head data on those two. My advice is always to try it during a fitting against whatever you’re gaming now.

' src=

What is E722 driver approximate ball speed.

It depends on the player swinging it and their club speed.

Correction: what is the E722 driver approximate ball spin rate.

Same answer: depends on the person swinging it.

Hello Matt,

Will you be reviewing the 723 line in near future?

Yes, we’re working to get those in soon.

Hey Matt, I currently hit the Tour Edge “Hot Launch” E522. Driver. It is very forgiving and I hit it pretty well for a 60yr old. But it has a very unique sound. Sounds pretty much like an aluminum bat striking a baseball. I love the performance but not crazy about the sound. Does the “Exotics “ E722 have the same sound? Would the performance be matched or even maybe improved? Thank you

I think the E722 and 522 drivers sound different and perform differently. Whether or not the performance is better will be a matter of fit.

After trying the “BIG” three over the last 2 months I had to go with the Tour Edge E722… We kicked out the Mistu shaft, and did a transplant to the 60 gram Fuji Ventus Blue in a “stiff”…. Wow, what a difference…. “it might” only be 9/10 yards longer, it’s certainly 12/14 yards straighter — I mean straighter. I’ve always had a bad habit of slicing — not with this Fuji blue Ventus.. amazing.
