It's the ONLY company in Rome offering this kind of FANTASTIC treat for experienced and discerning travellers. From your message and the information gathered from your website, I understand you wish to offer to your customers top quality and real local experiences far above usual touristic mass services. My promise: to show with passion to your customers the untold and true stories behind the historical Rome. There a quite a lot of spots and corners of Rome which are unknown to tourists and even to locals. Astounding places, off the-beaten-tracks, which wait to be discovered by discerning travellers, away from usual itineraries followed by big double-deck buses. I'm an enthusiast guide and I love passing my passion for Rome to customers that are not content of fast and dull tours. Narrations of each tour is custom made, according to the interest of each single customer. If your customers are searching for a unique, local, enthusiastic Italian experience, well, I'm definitely the right person in Rome. I'll lead them through the MAGIC of Rome aboard our vintage Fiat 500 cars and let them experiencing one of the best 5 tours of their life. Campania Tour Guide - Gabriella P.

Gabriella P.

Ciao everyone, i started as tour guide 6 years ago, almost out of fun, out of curiosity. contact with people has always been important for me and being born in naples, that came very simple, almost mandatory. my city is full of history and traditions, of delicious things like pizza and "coffee suspended", because no one in naples has to feel so poor that can not afford a coffee. a city suspended between the paradise of the sea and the flames of vesuvius, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world but from which you can enjoy one of the most striking views of the gulf of naples. and this volcano has given rise to what is still one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, pompeii. rich is the history as are the landscapes, as those breathtaking of the amalfi coast. the most beautiful part is to recognize the wonder in the eyes of the visit for the first time. the same wonder that i had felt and that i still feel today. this is the goal: give you the best experience showing all the beauties of this area. all my tours can be customized according to your requests, for example respecting the arrival/departure time of cruise ship, train or plane. what are you waiting for i'm waiting for you                                                                                                                                  .

Naples Tour Guide - Paolo M.

Hi to everyone, I'm Paolo. I'm an archaelogist and I have been working as tourist guide (license n° 1792 of the Campania Region) for several years . I was born in in the middle of the bay of Naples, by the mount Vesuvius. I have always loved history and archaeology, also because, where I live, there are the incredible excavations of Herculaneum. Since I was a child, I loved entering in Herculaneum and in Pompeii where I was amazed by the classical civilization. So I turned my passion into my work, being a licensed tourist guide. I graduated at the "L'Orientale" University in Naples obtaining a master's degree in Classical Archaeology and during my training I participated in several excavation campaigns in Pompeii and Cuma. I know very well even the city of Naples, where its historical center is Unesco Heritage, the bay of Pozzuoli and the Amalfi Coast: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. It's a unique place in the world where you can breathe a magical air. It's also famous for its food, just think that the pizza Margherita was born here. I love my land rich of history and culture. I will be happy to guide you in a place full of charm and ancient mistery. Welcome to the real Italy.

“ Roberta is an amazing tour guide! ”

I booked two tours with Roberta and I am so glad I did because she is one of the most amazing tour guides out there!! The two tours were definitely the highlights of our vacation and we could not have learned everything we did without her. Not only is she very knowledgeable about Italian history but she also went above and beyond connecting with people from the two small towns outside of Naples, where my family was originally from, as these are not her normal tour areas. She spent time researching and even contacted people who knew my family members years ago giving the tours such a personal touch. I am beyond grateful Roberta had the time to take our family around and share Italy's history with us. You can tell she has an incredible passion for what she does and I would recommend anyone who is looking for a tour guide to choose Roberta! Thank you!!!

Elizabeth V.

Thank you so much Elizabeth! It has been a lovely time spent with you and your family!

I had the pleasure of being guided through Brindisi by a real "pro"! Danny is a guide not only knowledgeable about his home town's history, culture, architecture and local customs but he has the gift to bring these facts about Brindisi to life by mixing interesting information with unusual anecdotes. His passion for Puglia is evident and I would highly recommend a tour with him. Thanks Danny, I enjoyed every minute of our detailed walk!

The Italian Dream

I enjoyed the cities we visited and the information and background history was well presented. The hotel were nice and our transportation to those cities was great. My concern, being a solo traveler, was there were a couple of times I travel alone through cities. One in particular was in Florence. I chose not to go on the excursion to Pisa since I had been to the city before. Our guide gave me a map and instructions on how to return to the hotel from our location. I asked if there were others not going to Pisa and I didn't receive a definitive answer. It was the next day that I found out that four other traveler did not go. I followed the map & instructions given me and I did reached the hotel, but I felt very uncomfortable traveling alone through that city. The second time was the last day in Rome, many of the travelers felt uncomfortable on securing transportation or finding their way from the Vatican to the Coliseum and returning to their hotel. That day I traveled with a group but we still felt uncomfortable getting through the city to our destinations especially at the end of the tour when we would return to our hotel. A couple of us were in different hotels and that had us traveling alone through the city. For the future, please give my concerns some thought especially since you promote safe travel for those traveling solo.

The Essential of Italy end Milan Tour

The Essential of Italy end Milan

I am going to write a more detailed review because I see this tour page is lacking longer reviews. Let me start by saying our main guide, Macarena, was great. She was always very positive, respectful of people's time and schedules as well as knowledgeable about every stop. She told us she had been working for Europamundo for 15 years. She spoke Spanish, English, and Italian. In short, you get what you pay for, and I do not mean that in a bad way. I am just saying, don't expect to pay this price point and enjoy some of the amenities of other pricier tours. For me personally, I figured this going into it and I was ok with it. I personally do not need my tour taking my bags everywhere for me - I can carry my own luggage to the bus if it means I will save thousands. Most tours that go to the places this tour does will charge at least 1K more than this. But like I said, I don't need to be greeted every morning with champagne. If you want that, this is not the tour for you. All in all, this tour delivered on every promise it made. My wife and I had a fantastic time overall. I am going to give a list of pros, cons, and general things to watch out for on this trip. KEY things to remember about Europomundo tours: 1 - if it is not EXPLICTLY stated that it IS included - it ISN"T. Example, on this tour - you have to pay for and properly schedule your trip to see the David statue or Uffizi museum. You have to pay to climb the leaning tower (ahead of time not in Italy). You must schedule and pay to climb cathedrals. Meals are not included (except usually breakfast at the hotel). On this particular trip, the only thing you don't need to plan ahead of time for is seeing St. Peter's and the Sistine Chapel because the tour offers a local guide to take you to those places for a 55$ fee when you are on the tour bus. (TOTALLY WORTH IT). 2- Another thing, anything you schedule should have a buffer time. In other words if the tour says you are getting somewhere at 4 - do not schedule something at 4. At least provide a 30 min buffer to figure out where you are going when you get there and to allow for a little bit of lateness. 3- Don't be last to get on the bus in morning because that will be your seat for the rest of the day even if it s sucks or you are separated from your group. 4- In Italy, most establishments do not have A/C. All of the the hotels did have A/C but most had limitations on how cold you could make the temperature in the room (not something Americans are used to). Ok here are the cons of the trip: 1- The Hotels are better than the reviews say, but they aren't fantastic. The last hotel was great, but aside from that, breakfast at all of the other hotels consists of gross deli meat, powdered eggs, soupy yogurt, hard bread, and overall bland/dry/bad food. Although they are rated as four star hotels, they are comparatively 2 star hotels in the United States due to cleanliness and amenities. We consistently found small stains and hairs on bedsheets. The rooms smelled of the cigarette smoke. Some of the hotel rooms were old and not updated. They weren't disgusting - but they were very mediocre. For my wife, this was the number one complaint of the tour. 2- The communication during the pickup transfer to get to the tour is lacking. You almost feel like, nervous, they're actually going to successfully find you. It is tricky to get in touch with them with international numbers, finding the exact number to call them at, and getting in touch DIRECTLY with the pickup person. For example, we needed to be picked up from the train station, however, our train was delayed and we sent several messages to Eurpomundo with no response. Honestly I wasn't even sure if I was contacting the correct number at one point because we were getting no responses. In the end, we did get in touch and it did work out but the process was a little nerve wracking. It was cool that they did offer a transfer at all though. 3- Sometimes the tour will take you into the city center, but sometimes you have to find your own method of getting into the city (and out of the city). If the tour lists a day as a free day, they more than likely are not providing transportation to the city center and you must arrange your own transportation in and out of the city center. Sometimes your hotel can be 15 to 20 minutes (driving) from the center. I felt like there should always be at least one trip transferring people in and our of the cities - even if they are free days - because it can sometimes be tricky to navigate a foreign country. 4- Cinque Terre was a nightmare to get in and out of. Insanely crowded and the train to get there was like New York City rush hour. It kind of ruined the vibe of the place but it was still really cool to see. 5- There was one point in the trip that we ran SIGNIFICANTLY late to Pisa. We almost missed our chance to get into the tower because we arrived almost an hour and a half later than the itinerary stated. And it was because we had to pick up like 50 people from other hotels to join our tour. which brings me to my last negative. 6- You will likely be paired with 50 other travelers. We got lucky, and since we were English speakers, we had mostly a small group for the majority of the trip. However, eventually they merged us with Spanish speakers and it was kind of hectic. Our tour guide did an exceptional job at keeping everything on track, but it is annoying to travel with that many people and when we had to pick them up it nearly screwed over our Pisa experience that WE paid for. Pros: The price is really great for what they give. You don't pay for unnecessary stuff. Our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The bus is nice - no bathroom but you can charge your phones and its decently comfortable. (and it had A/C). The local guides that were offered were all super nice and had great knowledge to share - take advantage of every local tour. The tour delivered on just about every promise it made. All of the more "low key" stops were all super cool and medieval looking. The tour guide's recommended food spots were all fantastic. A good amount of free time in the main cities. Overall the tour did not feel rushed - the timeframes all made sense for the location. small places had small windows of time and large places had larger windows of time. Overall, we loved our experience and do not feel ripped off in any way, but it is important to note the negatives because this tour is not for everyone if you personally cannot comprise some of the comforts that other, more expensive, tours offer.

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)

Very pleased with the tour. The guides were personable and well informed. The hotels very nice and the chosen restaurants and variety of offered foods exceeded expectations. Only complaint is that I wish tips had been included. There was a lot of confusion as to who should get tipped and what was the appropriate amount. All in all I feel that it was a great mix of seeing Sicily yet having free time to explore independently.

I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!

Overall the tour was good. The hotel Delfino in Venice was a 2 star ⭐️ so disappointing. The south of Italy part seemed very unorganised with different tour guides and little communication. The bus drivers down south drive like maniacs and I’m surprised we didn’t have an accident.

Tour was fabulous. Our tour leader Luca was amazing - incredibly knowledgeable, organized and helpful. Our tour group of 14 got along well and we really enjoyed each other’s company. Luca organized an optional dinner each evening and all opted to attend every dinner. We saw amazing sites and ate fabulous food. I would love to do another G Adventures tour.

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days Tour

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We booked a small group tour, advertised as 12 people in a minibus, we were actually 43 people on a standard large coach. We enjoyed the tour anyway, the coach was comfortable and radio transmitters and headsets made it possible to follow the commentary from the back of the group. Our guide Lucy, was very friendly and helpful and organised everything well, including wake up calls! There was however, some pressure to join optional activities, at extra cost. We went to Pisa and an excellent local guide made it an enjoyable experience. We were upgraded to be in Venice rather than Mestre, and the hotel there was especially lovely. The standard hotel in Florence was very pleasant but a bus ride away from the city centre. The set meals improved as the tour went on but only the final lunch in Montepulciano was above average. The included activities were mainly visits to cathedrals and basilicas with their incredible art. Some variety would have been good e.g. the Doge's palace in Venice. The 5 day tour didn't include any activities in Rome though we could have bought Vatican museum or sightseeing bus tickets by the same tour company, before we arrived. Overall it was a great way to see some of Italy's most picturesque towns / cities in a short time.

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

This was my first tour and I'm happy to say it exceeded all my expectations. It was exactly the type of holiday I wanted, hiking in beautiful scenery with good company and fabulous food. The food was absolutely fantastic - homemade and some homegrown. The hosts at our accommodations were wonderful and did so much extra for us. Our guide was a perfect for this trip, and she helped make a great itinerary even better. I am already planning my next tour and have recommended this to many people already.

Italian Holiday (7 Days) Tour

Italian Holiday (7 Days)

My husband and I are usually "do it yourself" travelers, but am I SO glad we went with Trafalgar on this "Italian Holiday" trip, and I'll tell you details of why I think this is a GREAT way to see Italy! First off, there are venues like the Vatican that an individual simply can't get into without waiting for hours in a long line, but Trafalgar guides shepherd you past endless lines, and get you in early. The day we saw the Vatican, people had gotten into lines hours early, but the Pope was set to visit at 10 am, so those poor folks were going to be very disappointed to learn they weren't going to get in after all. We were escorted in early, because Trafalgar arranges everything for you. Then a local guide who was extremely knowledgable gave us a fascinating tour, which made everything we were seeing that much more meaningful and interesting. You wear little headsets that are NOT a prerecorded thing, but enable you to hear her live tour. You can ask questions, which is so nice. I'm not even Catholic, but was utterly mesmerized and blown away by the Vatican. I'm sure you CAN do it on your own, but you'll wait forever, and not learn half as much. It's not like I'm going to Italy every week, so why not do it right and get a real tour? ( I'm so enthused, I should let everyone know I'm not a Trafalgar employee, and don't get any perks from sharing my enthusiasm!) . That was true of a lot of other places too; the local guides were all wonderful. Depending on your sophistication, you may or may not love the hotels. None took my breath away, but they were clean and in good areas, and some were quite attractive. Our main tour guide was Martin, and he assured us and reminded us that if we had any problems, please tell him so he could fix it. Well, at our first hotel, we were put into a room with one bed, but we'd requested 2 since hubby's a snorer and I'm a thrasher, so we did call Martin, and he did straighten it out very soon. This is something to say in Italy, because their hotels aren't usually up to US standards, frankly, and if you have a problem with your hotel and you are only staying somewhere one or 2 nights, how responsive do you think a hotel clerk will be? But if you are part of a tour group which brings that hotel lots of business, they are much more motivated to take care of you. This is another advantage to taking this tour, if you have limited time to see Italy, and want to see as much as possible in just over a week. We are penny pinchers, and this was expensive for us, but after going on it, neither of us begrudges the money, and my independent husband admits we could never have had all the wonderful experiences on our own. The breakfasts were very good, except Italians seem to like runny scrambled eggs, but there is LOADS to choose from, and I NEED a big breakfast! (I admit, I always stashed a bit of food in my purse for later too, but I was discreet!) Another thing we could not have done on our own was one of our favorite experiences: they took us to dinner at the most beautiful old villa in Tuscany! The owner was the soul of graciousness, and it was a spectacularly beautiful site; the grounds were like something gorgeous from a movie. There were lemon trees, roses, lavender, statues, paths, huge planters with blooming hydrangeas, and it all overlooked a valley of olive trees and grape vineyards. We spent the most relaxing evening, and were allowed to take all the pictures we wanted, and the dinner was delicious. You really got to appreciate Tuscany. A few of our dinners included as much wine as you wanted, and they don't add sulfites in Italy, so I became very European for a week! Another thing to be aware of is hidden costs in any tour company; they can really add up. Trafalgar did include quite a few meals, and quite a few amazing sites, so that makes a difference, and it ended up less expensive overall than others which had lots of "" that our tour included.. My husband and I paid for 2 optional tours: the Parthenon, and seeing "David" at the Academia. Again, we are ridiculously cheap, so we used a Rick Steve's book for our free time in other places. I think it's a good idea to buy his latest book and bring it with you, AND download some tours, because you can use it to do your own sightseeing, IF you are on a budget. We did the Rick Steve's tour in Verona, and we kept bumping into the folks on the optional tour, so I can't say that was an extra I minded missing! The biggest risk we took was in Florence. We could easily have seen a very famous cathedral where an amazing array of famous people are buried, but we really wanted to see the Uffizi Museum. Martin advised us to see the cathedral, because we might very well not get in to the Uffizi by the time we'd need to leave. We thanked him, then promptly RACED to wait in line at the Uffizi for more than an hour. You can arrange to get tickets days in advance, but we hadn't. (I guess to do that, we'd have had to know what time we'd be there..) We were super lucky to have about 45 minutes left to run around seeing our favorite statues and paintings that we'd researched on the Rick Steve's app while in line, including Botticelli's Venus Rising! It was one of the best days of my life; we were just so incredibly lucky. We waited in the general line, because the fast pass ticket do not tell you before you purchase them what time you'll get in; what good is that?!! I can't really recommend you do this though, because we might very well have not gotten in in time... Anyway, the glass blowing exhibit in Venice and the leather making exhibit in Florence were both very interesting, and were another thing available to you only as a Trafalgar guest. We didn't buy any glass or leather because we're cheapskates, but some of the ladies in our group bought stunning earrings at the glass factory, and they weren't expensive at all for such stunning, unique mementos...I wished I had! I wasn't thrilled with seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa for so long; I'd have been happy with 15 minutes of corny photography and then hit the road. But hubby and I went off site to an Indian restaurant near the back entrance, and had a great lunch cheap. (BTW, this review is completely helter skelter in terms of itinerary; I'm hopping all around out of sequence, sorry.) I'd been afraid Venice would be smelly and dirty, but despite a bad heat wave, it wasn't smelly or dirty. In fact, it was beautiful, absolutely amazing!! There's no other place like Venice - you MUST see it - and the cathedral and buildings and churches are incredible. We're musicians, so we had to go see the church where Antonio Vivaldi worked, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pieta, and St. Mark's where all Gabrielli's antiphonal brass pieces were performed. Photos aren't allowed in St. Mark's, and a lady in front of us was actually caught and escorted out for taking a pic, but hubby snuck one anyway because he's a music nerd. Never mind that it's the tomb of ST. MARK WHO WROTE THE GOSPEL - hubby had to photograph the balconies where trumpet players of old performed! We didn't go on the optional tour of St. Mark's. I'm sure it was interesting, but the long line for the public moved surprisingly fast, and we wanted more free time in Venice to explore back streets, old bookstores, etc. I think people in our group basically found all the optional tours worthwhile except perhaps the one in Verona, but we had our own ideas, so we picked and chose, nothing wrong with that. We didn't pay for the gondola tour, but everyone else was unanimous in raving about it, and it was a lot of folks' favorite thing! We also went on the Trevi Fountain tour, and I think we could have done that one on our own, but they did also show us little neighborhoods of charming narrow streets, and Martin treated us all to the best gelato of my life: I chose "blood orange", and am salivating just writing that... My husband was afraid this would be an "old farts tour" - meaning very slow paced, but I teased him about this as we hurried to keep up! This tour involved a lot of walking and a pretty rigid wakeup schedule, so if you have mobility issues, it's not the tour for you. It's PERFECT if you want to see a big range of Italy in only 8 days though, so we really appreciated the pace. If you go when it may be hot, take an umbrella for shade. Yes, I know it sounds silly, but even my semi-macho husband was using one to ward off the scorching sun when we got a 95 degree heatwave. It makes a huge difference. I wore a hat the entire vacation, so if you're fair, pack one. Fortunately for us, everyone on our tour was just great, and we really enjoyed getting to know lots of fun, interesting people from all over, and of various ages. I can't imagine every batch of tourists are so great, but our group was a total pleasure. We never saw the Lake Cuomo area, but that's something we could do on our own someday. For getting a wonderful experience of Italy- seeing Rome,Florence, Tuscany, Venice, Pisa, etc. - you really get a fabulous tour with this group. Lastly, Martin talked an awful lot, (bring earplugs for the bus if you want to sleep!) but he was a great guy and very professional and knowledgable. Our driver Vincenzo was incredibly competent navigating tight squeezes and traffic, and everything was planned like clockwork for our convenience. I gave this 5 stars, and hope you love it if you go!! <3

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Italy

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years
Generally speaking the tour was good. Hotels, foods, itinerary, tour guide were all satisfied. the only thing made me unhappy even panic was no taxi driver waiting at Catania airport arrivals although I booked in advance. It's about 22:30, I phoned the emergency number, the lady replied in Italian, we could not understand each other, so she shouted and put down phone. Then I asked an Italian for help. He made a call and got one can speak English. I was told the driver was in a airport bar, then I found the bar was closed and the driver was at outside of the bar, eventually he took me to the hotel, that was very late. The people responds emergency number cannot speak English?! The taxi driver 'with a sign with your surname on it' was not waiting at the arrivals as I was told. What was a shock for a person arrived in Catania first time at late evening and start a tour next morning?!
Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.

Few countries are as universally beloved as Italy. From Palermo’s dazzling coast to Tuscany’s vineyards, every corner of the land is exaltedly charming and historically intriguing. Pisa’s leaning tower, Rome’s Colosseum, and Vatican City are quintessential tourist stops, but there’s far more to Italy than these must-see staples. You could travel for weeks and still not venture past the region you started in; a short hike in Cinque Terre leads to days in this coastal village, while a day trip to Sicily could leave you beach-ridden and wandering for weeks.

Regardless of the length of your stay or city of interest, Italy’s offerings engulf all of your senses. Watch the locals do their shopping, as their romantic Latin language plays a soundtrack for the cobblestone streets. Feel the touch of their beautiful Italian leather, as the smell of a nearby pizza leaves you numb with cravings. Speaking of pizza, there is no better Italian tradition than eating and cooking. Any Italian tour guide will tell you how much of their culture is grounded in its’ food, and eating is among Italy’s greatest pastimes. So eat, to enjoy Italy in it’s best way.

Once you’ve chosen a particular tour guide, reserve in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises regarding payment (or lack thereof). Depending on how long private tours last or how much time was spent at each stop along the route, you might also want to set aside some extra cash for tips.

Do People Speak English in Italy? Your Friendly Guide

Lena Linh

Packing your bags for Italy and the pressing question, “Do people speak English in Italy?” keeps popping up in your mind?

Fret not because I’ve got the insights you need right here.

As an avid traveler, I understand the crucial role language plays in exploring new places.

Through this article, we’ll unveil the realities of English usage in Italy.

So buckle up and let’s embark on this linguistic journey. Are you ready to explore Italy’s language scene with me?

Your passport to communication in Italy starts here.

Key Takeaways

  • English is spoken in Italy, especially in major cities, but proficiency may vary in smaller areas.
  • Italians are welcoming and often go above and beyond to communicate with tourists.
  • Learning basic Italian phrases can enhance your Italian adventure and lead to more memorable experiences.

Do people speak English in Italy: An Overview

Italy

Statistics and Data

So, you’re planning a family trip to Italy and wondering about the English proficiency of Italians?

Let me help you with that.

About one-third of Italians speak English, but their proficiency level is quite low on average 1 .

This means that while you might meet English speakers, it’s not guaranteed that they’ll feel confident enough to have fluent conversations.

But worry not, my friend!

In the popular tourist areas, English is more widely spoken, which will greatly aid you in enjoying your stay.

Here’s a table comparing English proficiency levels to help you get a better understanding:

European Comparisons

Now, let’s put Italy’s English proficiency into a European context.

Italy ranks quite low compared to other countries, with about 73.5% of European nations exhibiting better English skills.

However, don’t panic just yet!

While these numbers can be a bit daunting, they don’t mean that you’ll face communication issues at every turn.

The truth is, Italians are becoming more and more accustomed to English speakers in their beautiful country.

You’ll find folks eager to help and chat with you in the larger city centers and tourist hotspots 6 .

Besides, what’s a trip to Italy without a dash of that infamous Italian charm, right?

So, remember to pack a phrasebook or download a language app, because learning a few basic Italian phrases can make your stay much more enjoyable.

It shows your enthusiasm for their culture, and as a bonus, it’ll make your trip feel more personal and engaging.

Regional Differences

Major cities.

Rome

When considering Italy’s major cities, such as Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, and Naples, English is more commonly spoken in these urban areas.

However, it’s worth noting that the percentage of English speakers is still lower than in other European countries.

Don’t be discouraged, though.

Many folks in these cities, particularly those working in the tourism industry, will likely have at least basic English skills to help you navigate your travels.

Dialects and Local Languages

Tuscany

In Italy, dialects and local languages strongly influence regional differences.

Tuscany and Lazio, for example, have their own distinct dialects.

Each region’s dialect is a reflection of its unique history and culture.

While this might make communication a bit more challenging, it also adds to the richness of your adventure in Italy.

Embrace these linguistic disparities and enjoy the opportunity to explore such a diverse country with your family.

Tourist Areas

Venice

In tourist-frequented areas such as Tuscany, Venice, and Florence, the level of English spoken is generally higher.

Well, these regions rely heavily on tourism, and as a result, businesses usually ensure their staff is equipped with a functional knowledge of English.

This means you and your family can expect to find more English speakers in these regions, making your journey a little smoother.

So, as you plan your family excursions throughout Italy, keep in mind the regional differences and varying levels of English proficiency.

This will help you set realistic expectations, prepare for potential language barriers, and make the most of your unforgettable Italian adventure.

Remember, a language is not only a means of communication but also a key to unlocking cultural treasures.

Communication in Italy

Common phrases.

When visiting Italy, it’s a good idea to learn some basic Italian phrases to help you navigate the country more easily.

Not every Italian speaks English, which means that knowing a bit of the language will come in handy.

Here are some essential phrases to know, and don’t sweat the details – Italians are forgiving when it comes to pronunciation:

  • Buongiorno: Good morning
  • Buonasera: Good evening
  • Grazie: Thank you
  • Prego: You’re welcome
  • Per favore: Please
  • Scusi: Excuse me
  • Parla inglese?: Do you speak English?

Useful Tips for English Speakers

As an English speaker, you may encounter some challenges when communicating in Italy.

First, not all Italians speak English, and those who do may have varying levels of proficiency.

However, you’ll find that many people in tourist areas and larger cities are more likely to speak English, especially among younger Italians and those working in the best restaurants in Italy .

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or directions, but do so in a polite and friendly manner.

Italians appreciate when visitors make an effort to speak their language, so starting a conversation with a few Italian words can go a long way.

When you need to switch to English, simply ask, “Parla inglese?”

It’s a kind way to show that you respect their language and culture.

Language Barriers

While Italy is a beautiful and culturally rich country, it’s important to be aware of potential language barriers when traveling there.

Only about one-third of Italians speak English, and their proficiency may be quite low.

As a result, it’s a good idea to have a language learning app or a small Italian phrasebook with you to help you communicate better.

From my personal experience, patience and a little creativity go a long way when dealing with language barriers.

Use gestures, point to objects, and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself – it will help you connect with Italians and make your trip more enjoyable.

Travel and Tourism in Italy

Accommodations and attractions.

Amalfi Coast

Planning a family trip to Italy? You’re in for a treat!

Let’s talk about accommodations first: the country offers a wide range of options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels.

Searching for the best hotels in Italy ?

Your best bet is to look in popular cities like Rome, Florence, or Venice.

And don’t worry, most of the hotels in tourist areas will have English-speaking staff to assist you with your needs.

Now let’s talk about attractions.

Italy boasts renowned museums, historical sites, and breathtaking landscapes.

If you’re into art and history, Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and Rome’s Colosseum should definitely be on your list.

Venice, known for its romantic gondola rides, is an experience you won’t forget.

Oh, and did I mention the best beaches in Italy ?

The Amalfi Coast and Sardinia absolutely deserve a visit.

Transportation and Navigation

Transportation and Navigation

Getting around Italy is a breeze, thanks to its extensive train system and public transportation options in major cities.

While English signs might not be as common, many key spots like museums, train stations, and airports will have signs in English to help you navigate.

If you prefer to explore on foot, guided tours are typically offered in English.

Just keep in mind that while traveling outside tourist areas, your language skills might be put to the test, as not all Italians speak English fluently.

It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with some basic Italian phrases, just in case!

Dining Experience

Dining Experience

You can’t visit Italy without indulging in the amazing cuisine!

Many restaurants, especially in touristy areas, will have English menus and English-speaking staff.

Still, it doesn’t hurt to learn how to say “pizza” and “pasta” in Italian, right?

Try the local specialties, from pizza in Naples to gelato in Florence.

You might find some regional dishes with unexpected ingredients, but don’t be afraid to ask questions—most establishments are happy to share the unique flavors of their region with you.

Safety and Precautions

Safety and Precautions

Italy is generally a safe destination for families.

But it’s always wise to take some precautions.

Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, as pickpocketing can happen.

When exploring, stick to well-trafficked areas, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you feel lost or need assistance.

Expats and Work in Italy

Finding a job in italy.

So, you are considering working in Italy, and you are wondering about your job prospects.

Well, the Italian job market can be challenging due to its unemployment rates.

However, don’t let this discourage you.

Like anywhere else, it all depends on the field you are in and the connections you make.

If you are a European citizen, it’s easier to explore work opportunities since you are allowed to live and work in Italy without a visa.

For non-EU citizens, some popular options are teaching English or working as tour operators for English-speaking groups.

But remember, you’ll need to learn about Italy’s rich local culture and history to excel in these roles.

Language and Adjustment Challenges

When it comes to language barriers, most Italians speak Italian as their primary language, but that doesn’t mean communication will be impossible for you!

English is spoken to some extent, especially in cities frequented by tourists.

However, as an expat living and working in Italy, it is important to learn Italian in order to adapt and integrate more easily.

So, what else should you expect while adjusting to life in Italy?

It’s not only about the language – the lifestyle in Italy might be slower than what you’re used to.

Things like all-night pharmacies and quick post office trips may not be a possibility.

But hey, who doesn’t love a leisurely espresso break now and then?

Remember, your experience in Italy will largely depend on how open you are to accepting and embracing the differences in culture, traditions, and yes, even the pace of life.

And even though integration might require some effort on your part, it can lead to a very enriching and rewarding adventure – say “hello” to la dolce vita!

Working and living in Italy can be truly incredible.

So give it a shot, embrace the language, culture, and prepare for enriching experiences with the warm and welcoming locals.

Parting Words

Parting Words

So, do people speak English in Italy?

While not everyone is fluent, you’ll likely find that in major tourist cities like Rome, Milan, and Florence, many locals have a decent amount of English to help you navigate your way around.

When traveling with your family to Italy, it’s always a good idea to learn a few key Italian phrases to help bridge the language gap.

You never know when a simple “ciao” or “grazie” can save the day.

Plus, it’s always appreciated when you make an effort to speak the local language.

Remember, even if you encounter language barriers, a smile and a bit of patience go a long way in communicating with others.

After all, making connections with new people is one of the joys of traveling, and Italy is no exception.

Enjoy the beauty, culture, and friendly atmosphere that awaits you and your family on your Italian adventure.
