“Calla. No existe el pasado. No hay nada que perdonar. Empecemos a vivir desde hoy. Mira, el mar. El mar no sabe nada del pasado. Ahí está. Nunca nos pedirá explicaciones. Las estrellas, la luna, ahí están y siguen iluminándonos, brillan para nosotros”. A partir de 1320, la vida de Bernat Estanyol, siervo de la tierra, dará un giro radical. En Barcelona, él y su hijo Arnau descubren una ciudad en ebullición, donde se está construyendo un templo que 700 años después seguiría sorprendiendo a sus visitantes: la Basílica de Santa María del Mar , en cuya entrada principal comenzaremos nuestra ruta guiada por la Ciudad Condal.

En este tour de La catedral del mar por Barcelona, recorreremos aquellas zonas del casco histórico donde el pasado medieval que se narra en la novela de Ildefonso Falcones sigue estando hoy muy vivo. Conoceremos cómo los humildes estibadores, canteros y pescadores del barrio de la Ribera dedicaron su esfuerzo a construir un templo para la “virgen del mar”. El coste de las obras fue sufragado, entre otras personas, por los ricos mercaderes de las calles Argenteria y Montcada . Daremos un paseo por estas vías para admirar sus edificios señoriales, citados también en la obra de Falcones.

Siguiendo el trazado de la zona medieval de Barcelona, recorremos las plazas del Blat, del Rey y de San Jaime en busca de otras localizaciones (y sus historias) que se describen a lo largo de la trama de La catedral del mar .

Antes de finalizar el tour en la Plaza Nueva , recordaremos otros pasajes de la novela que muestran el simbolismo e importancia que supuso para los barceloneses de la Edad Media la Basílica de Santa María del Mar. “Pues bien, Arnau, no sé si será el mejor templo del mundo. “La Catedral del Mar” fue un Best Seller que narraba la vida de la Barcelona del siglo XIV . En sus principales escenarios, recrearemos la historia de Ildefonso Falcones y conoceremos aspectos y curiosidades de una Barcelona diferente. Si te gustó la novela ¡Te apasionará el tour!

Nuestra visita guiada arranca, precisamente , en la Plaza de Santa María, ante la fachada de la iglesia que es, en realidad, una basílica  y que habiendo sido siempre uno de los atractivos de la ciudad, desde la publicación de la novela en el año 2006, es una de las visitas obligadas de Barcelona.

Se levantó en el barrio de la Ribera y siempre se pensó en ella, como una iglesia para los trabajadores, de esta manera los nobles y las clases adineradas tenían su catedral y los más humildes tuvieron esta “catedral del Mar”. Fueron  los vecinos los únicos que se encargaron de su construcción , unos pusieron el dinero y los materiales y otros su trabajo,  fueron los “bastaixos”, la profesión de Arnau Estanyol cuando llega a Barcelona .

Siempre ligada al mar, por su proximidad a él, la iglesia es una joya del gótico catalán que detallaremos de la mano de nuestro guía. Por cierto , ¿sabéis que en sus vidrieras hay un escudo del F.C Barcelona?  Pero la vida de los protagonistas y la vida de la misma ciudad, también circula por otras localizaciones.

Por la calle Montcada vivían los mercaderes de la época , aquellos que se encargaron de la financiación y aún hoy podremos ver muchos de los edificios señoriales a los que hace referencia el propio Falcones.  La Lonja, tan conocida por Arnau, estaba en la Pla de Palau,  no os desvelaremos los giros del guion, pero este será un lugar fundamental.

Nuestro paseo nos llevará por  las Calles Consolat, Canvis Vells o Argentería, unas calles que recorren nuestros personajes en infinidad de ocasiones  y que tiene aún rastro de este Medievo en que Barcelona crecía.  La Plaza del Blat, la Plaza del Rei o la Plaza de San Jaime, serán otros de los lugares de la novela a los que iremos , antes de terminar en la Plaza Nueva.

While the architecture of Santa Maria del Mar is literally jaw dropping, for me, its history is just as interesting, especially when you think of how long it’s been watching over Barcelona.

1. The Bastaixos Role

In 14th-century Barcelona, the construction of the Santa Maria del Mar church, also known as the Cathedral by the Sea, was a community effort. The Bastaixos were port workers who played a significant role in constructing the church. 

These workers volunteered their time and effort, transporting heavy stones and other materials for building the church from the nearby Montjuïc quarry to the construction site.

In fact, it was thanks to their hard work that the Cathedral took only 54 years to be built – which is an amazing achievement when you consider how long others take to be built (just ask the Sagrada Familia , which has been under construction for more than 140 years and counting).

And as you walk through the basilica, you can observe the stunning Gothic style and impressive stained-glass windows. Keep an eye out for various symbols of wealth and maritime trade scattered throughout, reflecting the thriving trade community of medieval Barcelona.

2. Berenguer de Montagut Influence

Berenguer de Montagut was the architect responsible for the design of Santa Maria del Mar. His influence on the church is evident in its distinctly Catalan Gothic style, known for its purity and unity. 

De Montagut made sure to create a spacious, light-filled, and harmonious interior by designing tall columns, large windows, and minimal ornamentation, setting it apart from other large medieval Gothic cathedrals.

I have to admit: I haven’t watched the Netflix series, although it got a ton of positive reviews, with many viewers commenting that they found the TV adaptation to be a loyal representation of the novel. 

Plus the adaptation also features scenes from other works by Ildefonso Falcones, like “Heirs to the Land”, so it’s truly a broad adaptation of his work.

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is seen as one of the best examples of Catalan Gothic architecture , which has noticeable differences to the European Gothic tradition. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Barcelona, even taking in to account the city’s much more well-known Cathedral .

Despite the fact that the basilica is not as well-known as the Sagrada Familia or Barcelona’s Cathedral , in more recent years the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar has found itself in an area visited more frequently by tourists, thanks to the interest kindled by the well-known books ‘La Catedral del Mar’ ( Cathedral of the Sea ) and ‘El Juego del Ángel’ ( The Angel’s Game ) by the local authors Ildefonso Falcones and Carlos Ruíz Zafón respectively.

The three magnificent façades , which emphasize the two octagonal towers and the huge amount of bare stone surfaces, give the building quite an imposing feel, as it’s difficult to gain an overall impression due to the fact that the church is so hemmed in by the narrow streets of La Ribera .

Despite the simplicity of the interior of the church, it’s just as impressive; in fact this simplicity is what gives the church its incredible acoustics, making it the host of many choral concerts and even some jazz.

Guided visit to Santa Maria del Mar

As well as being able to visit the Basilica for free during certain hours of the day there is the option of taking a tourist visit , a guided tour inside the church where the visitor is introduced to the history of the church and the area of La Ribera when the church was built.

Shortly after you go up to the first of the three terraces you can see and almost touch the large rose window, which as you are explained during the visit, suffered a misfortune due to an earthquake. After that, and whilst listening to the detailed explanations from the guide, you access the second terrace with incredible views of the city .

After the guide finishes his commentary you continue up to the third terrace, with some views, if it wasn’t enough before, that are even more spectacular and with a 360 panoramic view of the city from one of the most central and historical areas.

After climbing the stairs in the bell tower you return to the church, where you see more of the interior accompanied by the guide (if it is a guided visit of 55 minutes) or by yourself (if it is a visit of 45 minutes) which allows you to also take photos of the enormous central nave , impressive ceiling and many chapels .

Prices, languages and length of the visit

You can buy tickets to visit the Santa María del Mar Basilica and terraces online , which is recommended as the guided visit is done in small groups and it is possible that, if you don’t book your ticket early enough, there may not be any places left.

So, on the day of the visit you should come 10 minutes before to the ticket office located at the entrance of the church at Plaça (square) de Santa Maria , and show the printed receipt you receive when you make the purchase online.

Despite the impact of the media, it is still possible to visit the church for free during certain hours of the day and to take photographs without any problem. Although during mass it is not viewed favourably and maximum respect for the churchgoers is requested.

If you want to go up to the terraces and enjoy the fantastic views of the old neighbourhood of La Ribera the only way to do so is by going on a guided tour .

Santa Maria del Mar – Barcelona’s Cathedral of the Sea

The Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar was built during the 14th century on a site which was once occupied by a Roman Amphitheatre. The church took 55 years to build and is a rare example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture (most churches and cathedrals are a combination of styles). The simplicity of design and almost total lack of adornment give the church an atmosphere of unsurpassed serenity.

During the 14th century, the La Ribera neighbourhood was located by the beach and was home to a mix of sailors, harbour workers, fishermen, craftsmen and merchants. Unlike Barcelona Cathedral, which was being built at the same time and was paid for by the king, the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar was principally funded by local people. Rich merchants provided the majority of the money whilst sailors and porters (bastaixos) transported tons of stone from the quarries on Montjuïc.

The story of the construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is told in the novel The Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones . If you haven’t read the book yet, I recommend you try to get hold of a copy because the author really manages to bring the medieval streets of Barcelona to life.

In 1428 the church was shaken by a major earthquake that destroyed the large rose window, which was replaced in 1459 by the one we can see today. In 1909, during a week which became known as the Tragic Week (setmana tragica), the church was set on fire by anarchists protesting against conscription to fight in the Second Rif War. The fire melted most of the stained glass windows and destroyed the original altar and organ as well as a large quantity of historic documents.

Santa Maria del Mar Basilica Rooftop Tour

From May to October, you can take a guided tour of the church and its roof terraces. Although I’m not generally a big fan of tours, I thought that this one was very good value. The tour starts from the ticket desk just inside the west entrance from Plaça de Santa Maria and lasts 45 minutes.

After a short introduction in the nave, most of the tour is spent on the roof, where the guide explains how the church was built, the history of Santa Maria del Mar and the surrounding neighbourhood of La Ribera. Although the tour concentrates on the church itself, our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer more general questions about the history of Barcelona and Catalonia. Please note that the roof is reached by climbing a narrow spiral staircase, and there is no lift.

I recommend that you take the tour early in the day, before the crowds arrive and before it gets too hot. We visited at 11 am and there were only three people in our group. The ticket allows you to visit the church again later in the day when the choir is open (from 1 pm to 5 pm). If you like taking photos, it’s worth noting that in the afternoon (when you have to pay to enter), the church is less busy and better illuminated.

Time Needed To Visit

If you take the rooftop tour, then I recommend you allow an hour in total. Forty-five minutes for the tour plus 15 minutes to visit the nave and choir.

If you are visiting without the tour, then 10 to fifteen minutes should be enough time to visit the nave and take a few photos.

Secrets of the church of santa maria del mar in barcelona.

There are three churches in Barcelona that people call “cathedral”: The Cathedral of Saint Eulalia , the Cathedral of the Poor (Sagrada Familia) and the Cathedral of the Sea (Santa Maria del Mar). But only one of them is officially so. 

In order to be a Cathedral, a church must be the headquarters of the Bishopric, and that honor only falls to the Cathedral of Saint Eulalia. The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia started being called “Cathedral of the Poor” (Catedral dels Pobres) because its enormous size and because its construction was paid through humble donations. And because of a painting by the impressionist artist Joaquim Mir called precisely like this.

And the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar was called “Cathedral of the Sea” because its proximity to the port, its large size (for a medieval church) and the novel by Ildefonso Falcones about its construction. And this is the site I want to discuss in today’s post.

Santa Maria del Mar Basilica is one of the most important churches in the Old Town of Barcelona, and a uniquely pure example of Catalan Gothic style. It's architecture is elegant and slim, and its stained glasses make it light and spiritual inside. It's definitely a site not to miss when visiting Barcelona.

Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar History

Origins of the name of the church.

The current Basilica was built where used to stand a smaller church documented from 998 and called “Santa Maria de les Arenes” (Our Lady of the Sands). Some recent studies suggest it could have been the previous location of the Roman amphitheater or “Arena”.

That would explain the name of the church. But it could also be a reference to the sands of the nearby beaches. That could also have been the place where the reliques of Saint Eulalia, patron saint of Barcelona, where found in 887.

1005 is the first time we hear it called “Santa Maria del Mar” (Our Lady of the Sea). And little afterwards it becomes the parish church of the district of Vilanova de la Mar.

Construction of the Basilica

But in the meantime, the original Santa Maria del Mar had become too small for a wealthy district of craftsmen and merchants. Eventually, their priest Bernat Llull got permission from the Bishop to build a new church. The only condition is that the Bishopric wouldn’t fund them: they already had enough expenses building the Cathedral!

That’s how Santa Maria del Mar was paid exclusively from donations or the work of the local middle class. And also of King Alphonse the Benign, who laid its foundational stone in 1329. He expressed like this his gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the help during the war of conquest of Sardinia.

Berenguer de Montagut and Ramon Despuig were the master builders that designed and co-directed the works, according to the contract that is still preserved. 

The enthusiasm of the neighborhood, with its guilds so committed to it, allowed for a rapid construction. It wasn’t even much delayed by a destructive fire that took place in 1378. So in 1383 the last keystone is set to hold the last vault. And the first mass takes place in August 15th, 1384. 

It had been only 54 years of construction works: a ground breaking record considering most cathedrals took centuries to be finished. And that allowed for something quite unique too: Santa Maria del Mar was started and finished in Gothic style. Its architecture is pure and has no interference of other later trends.

Other important moments in the history of Santa Maria del Mar

• 1428 . A violent earthquake makes the rose window fall down, killing some thirty people. The new one wasn’t finished until 1460.
• 1496 . The first belltower is crowned. The other was already used as a clock tower since 1674, but wouldn’t be completed until 1902.
• 1771 . Construction of the Baroque altar and the presbiterium.
• 1832-34 . Construction of the Chapel of the Most Holy.
• 1923. Pope Pius XI declares Santa Maria del Mar a Basilica.
• 1936 . A fire burning for 11 days destroys all the interior decoration during the Spanish Civil War.
• Between 1967 and the 1990’s . Campaigns of restauration of the church.

Art and architecture of Santa Maria del Mar Church

Main façade (on plaça de santa maria).

• Porters high relieves . The porters (in Catalan, bastaixos) were the poorest guild of the district and they chose to contribute to the construction of the Church by working for free. They brought the stone blocks from the quarries in Montjuic, earning the right to be represented at the gate of the church.
• Sculptures . In each side stand Saint Peter and Saint Paul, heads of the Catholic Church. On top of the gate seats Jesus showing the stigmas on his hands. He is flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John Evangelist.
• Fresco . If you pay attention you’ll notice the wall behind Jesus is painted in faint colors. It’s a fresco found during the restoration works in 1999 and it represents the resurrection of the souls during the Apocalypse. The head of a reptilian monster can be seen in the right hand corner.

Eastern Façade (on Santa Maria st.)

• Upper part . The opening of the Fossar de les Moreres, the old parish cemetery, allows you to look up and appreciate the top of the church buttresses as well as the gargoyles.
• Inscriptions . To each side of the gate you can see medieval inscriptions celebrating the layout of the foundational stone by King Alphonse the Benign and the Conquest of Sardinia. One is in Latin and the other in Catalan.

Western Façade (on Sombrerers st.)

• Austerity . The narrow alley where this side of the church faces reinforces the idea of austere horizontality, only broken by the tall and thin windows in the upper level.
• Gate . This church gate, that is rarely open, is topped with a sculpture of the Virgin Mary with the Child. You’ll be able to admire its details better by stepping a bit down Mirallers street. There’s also some frescos in the background, representing angels playing instruments.

Apse (on Passeig del Born)

• Adjacent buildings . The apse of Santa Maria del Mar is partially covered by two buildings: the rector house (now an apartment building) and the Chapel of the Most Holy, added in 1834.
• Gate . This gate is the back entrance to the Basilica, and it was open in the 1540’s. The sculpture of the Virgin Mary that presides it is much more recent, though: it’s the work of artist Frederic Marès after 1939.
• Side chapels . In the Middle Ages, in Catalonia it was common to reuse the space between buttresses inside the church for side chapels. In Santa Maria del Mar the space between two buttresses was wide enough to divide it in three chapels each. Unfortunately, the original decoration was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War fire. The only pieces that survived are two images of Jesus Christ (1), in chapels near the Altar.
• Stained glass windows . The oldest fragments date from the 1300’s, but they kept in the museum of the church. One of the oldest pieces is the stained glass of the Last Judgment (2), from 1494. Other personal favorites are the Fountain of Live Water (3), the Cypress Tree and the Moon (4), the Palm Tree and the Sun (5), and the Eucharist (6).
• Sports and Santa Maria del Mar (7) . There’s one very contemporary stained glass added in the occasion of the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. It has the names of medal winners and sport celebrities engraved on it in tiny letters. Then the window on top was one of the many damaged during the Civil War fire. In the 1960’s the FC Barcelona team decided to pay for its restoration, and the stained glass maker put the team coat of arms at the bottom of the window.
• Rose Window (8) . Done in 1459 in flamboyant gothic, it represents the Coronation of Mary as Queen of the Heavens. She is surrounded by the four Gospels, the Apostles, angels, saints and bishops. However, it vibrant colors and shine make difficult to appreciate the small characters that look more like little flames from the distance.
• Saint Ignatius of Loyola (9) . The founder of the Jesuits spent some time in Barcelona on his way to Holy Land. And he used to seat in Santa Maria del Mar to beg charity while attending mass. Nowadays there’s a chapel dedicated to him, with a small plate indicating the steps where he used to seat and a sculpture of the saint inaugurated in 2016.

The Cathedral of the Sea

The Cathedral of de Sea (La Catedral del Mar) is the opera prima of the Spanish writer Ildefonso Falcones . It was published in 2006 and quickly became a best-seller. It was translated to English in 2008. In 2018 Netflix released a TV series based on it.

The book tells the story of Arnau Estanyol, born a serf of a feudal lord that arrives to Barcelona as a young kid when his father runs away from his lord. They eventually achieve freedom and become free citizens. Arnau starts then a new live involved in the construction works of Santa Maria del Mar. First a stone porter, he’ll climb the society ladder little by little.

While The Cathedral of the Sea is not a true story and most of the characters are made up, the narration is very well researched. Some characters are inspired in real people that appear in the city records and history books. And the institutions, traditions, customs and historical events are described quite accurately in the book.

The TV series is a Spanish production of 8 episodes. Both the book and the TV show were followed by a sequel called Heirs to the Land.

Un tour regular és un tour que fem amb sortides programades. Tu compres l’entrada per un dia i una hora en concret i compartiràs el tour amb altres persones.

Ens importa la qualitat dels nostres tours, per això mai trobaràs grups massificats. Si molta gent s’apunta, dividim el grup en dos. En el cas de l’Slow Gothic Tour mai trobaràs més de 12 persones. A la resta dels nostre stours el màxim és de 22 persones.

¿Què necessites per fer un tour regular?

Un cop efectuada la reserva, només has de presentar-te en el punt de trobada a l’hora indicada.

Et recomenem calçat còmode perquè tots els nostres tours regulars són a peu. Si és estiu potser també t’aniria bé una ampolla d’aigua o quelcom per refrescar-te.

Com personalitzo l’experiència?

Aquest tour no es pot personalitzar perquè és un tour regular. Si desitges fer-lo en exclusiva pots posar-te en contacte amb nosaltres i personalitzar-lo al teu gust: escollir el dia, l’hora, el número de persones o canviar part del recorregut i incloure alguna altra parada o monument. Excelente viaje por el tiempo conducido por una guía inmejorable. a guía nos condujo por los espacios de la catedral del Mar de una forma profesional, con conocimiento histórico. El guía nos dará debida cuenta de cómo era la vida de la época y cómo los humildes trabajadores del barrio de la Ribera dedicaron su vida para construir un templo dedicado a la “Virgen del Mar”.

Cómo visitar y qué ver en la Catedral del Mar (Barcelona): horarios, precios

Quienes me conocéis sabéis que en los últimos tiempos estoy fascinado por la arquitectura románica , frente al gusto preferente por el gótico que siempre he tenido.

A ello me ha llevado el descubrir el prerrománico y el románico asturiano  o grandes basílicas románicas como la de San Sernin en Toulouse  o la Abadía de Conques , ambas en el sur de Francia.

Pero también encantadoras ermitas como la de Urueña en la provincia de Valladolid .

Por contra, cada vez me gusta menos la exhuberante arquitectura barroca , salvo algunas excepciones.

En cambio, ahora me atrae la sobriedad que encuentras en una pequeña iglesia románica como la citada entre las muchas que puedes encontrar, por ejemplo, en Castilla y León .

Sin embargo, una de las iglesias que más me ha impresionado por su belleza en los últimos tiempos es de arquitectura gótica .

Se trata de la Basilíca de Santa Maria del Mar , la cual he descubierto en uno de mis más recientes  viajes a Barcelona .

Con una configuración diferente a la de las grandes catedrales góticas , destaca por combinar en su interior la gran altura y esbeltez de su nave con la sobriedad del denominado gótico catalán .

Curiosidades de la historia de Santa María del Mar en Barcelona

Santa María del Mar fue construida en muy poco tiempo, en apenas 55 años, en comparación con el largo tiempo, incluso siglos, que era habitual dedicar a la construcción de grandes catedrales góticas.

Situada en el barrio de la Ribera , entre el puerto y el barrio del Born , se empezó a construir en 1329, y por su ubicación también es conocida como Catedral de la Ribera .

Iba a ser el exponente del gran auge de la burguesía mercanti l que se había establecido en esta zona extramuros de la original muralla de la ciudad romana.

Construida con la aportación e incluso el trabajo de dicha burguesía, el propósito inicial era levantar una iglesia más esplendorosa que la Seo , actual catedral gótica de Barcelona , la cual también se estaba construyendo en la misma época.

De hecho Santa María del Mar pronto pasó a ser conocida como la catedral del Mar .

Cuando mis amigos barceloneses me propusieron ir a visitarla, ya me anunciaron que  Santa María del Mar  era más bonita, y tras conocerla te puedo adelantar que se trata de una iglesia preciosa, con una configuración no habitual.

Según te acercas a la basílica, bien desde el barrio Gótico o desde la Barceloneta , junto al puerto, entre las estrechas calles de este barrio puedes divisar alguna de sus dos erguidas torres octogonales .

Por fuera es difícil tener una completa perspectiva del edificio.

La iglesia de Santa María del Mar se encuentra encajonada entre calles y pequeñas plazas, pero eso no impide que ya la fachada te llame mucho la atención por el conjunto artístico que forman las citadas torres, la portada gótico y el imponente rosetón .

Qué ver en la visita de la Catedral del Mar

El aspecto macizo del edificio no te permite adivinar la sensación de gran esbeltez que muestra su interior.

Son tres naves, pero las laterales tienen casi la misma altura que la central, por lo que te dará la sensación de que Santa María del Mar tiene una sola nave.

Esta configuración en cierto modo es similar, por ejemplo, a la de la catedral de Palma de Mallorca , aunque ésta muestra una imagen más alta y robusta.

En el caso de la Catedral de Mar de Barcelona sus altas columnas octogonales de 18 metros de altura, pero sobre todo la gran separación entre ellas, 13 metros, la mayor que puedes encontrar en un edificio gótico, ayudan a trasladarte esa imagen de gran esbeltez.

Esta sensación es mayor por la presencia de numerosas vidrieras que ocupan los muros de la iglesia .

En cambio, en la zona del altar las esbeltas columnas se arremolinan en la cabecera de la iglesia formando un frondoso y característico bosque que resalta el altar.

Ahí verás la talla de Santa María junto a la que se encuentra una carabela.

En general, el interior muestra un aspecto bastante sobrio, pero esto en buena medida se debe a que al inicio de la Guerra Civil numerosos elementos artísticos que había en la basílica fueron destruidos por un incendio, como un coro gótico o un gran altar barroco.

Por lo dicho al inicio, para nada echo de menos este último elemento que me temo hubiera roto el encanto del interior de la iglesia Santa María del Mar .

Horarios visita de la Catedral del Mar

De cara a tu visita, debes saber que los horarios de la Basílica de Santa María del Mar para las visitas culturales son, de lunes a sábado, de 10 a 18 horas.

Por su parte, los domingos y festivos puedes visitarla de 13,30 a 18 horas.

Aparte de poder pasear por el interior de la basílica, tienes la opción de la visita cultural de la Catedral del Mar que incluye el museo y la cripta , con un precio de 5 euros.

La Basílica de Santa María del Mar, también conocida como “La Catedral del Mar”,  es sin duda uno de los mayores iconos arquitectónicos de Barcelona. Está considerada como el único ejemplar del estilo gótico catalán .

Se encuentra en el corazón del barrio del Born , en pleno centro de Barcelona.

Al contrario que muchas otras catedrales, Santa María del Mar se construyó en un tiempo récord de 55 años , gracias a la fuerte participación de los vecinos del barrio de La Ribera .

Como consecuencia, se consiguió mantener un estilo único durante toda la construcción. La armonía y ligereza de sus proporciones, así como la ausencia de una gran ornamentación, son sus principales características.

A pesar de que luce un aspecto macizo y sólido en el exterior, por dentro el espacio es alto, generoso y lleno de luz. En este sentido, destaca un espacio diáfano de tres naves con altísimas columnas , todas ellas con una separación de 13 metros.

Entre otros elementos, cabe destacar la austeridad de las columnas de forma octogonal, las estilizadas vidrieras y el gran rosetón , el cual fue destruido en el terremoto que asoló Barcelona en 1428 y reconstruido en 1459.

La Ruta del Born - La Catedral del Mar

La ruta de la bella y el mar, barcelona y el mar tienen una de las historias más bellas de la época medieval, en el siglo xiii las familias nobles y de la alta burguesía de barcelona edificaron sus palacios en la calle montcada llegando hasta la plaza donde se hacían las justas y torneos de caballeros que ahora se conoce como “el born”. en el otro lado y en honor a la más bella virgen del mar se construyó la catedral del mar..

La construcción de esta Basílica llamada la Catedral del Mar de estilo gótico se inició el año 1329.  La obra pertenecía a los pescadores y feligreses de la Ribera que colaboraban con dinero o con su trabajo.  En la Basílica del Mar participaron los llamados galafates o bastaixos que ayudaron con su esfuerzo a la construcción. Finalmente, después de un incendio se puso la última piedra el año 1383.

En la Ruta del Born nos adentraremos en la época medieval, en los Palacios de la Calle Montcada, en las justas de caballeros, en el Fossar de las Moreras, donde reposan los valientes que defendieron Barcelona durante los 13 meses del asedio de 1714.  Pero está ya es otra historia. Nos trasladaremos a un mundo de otro tiempo, pero al que todavía podemos ver y soñar.
