The race will have three stages that are set for the sprinters, although the final circuit stage in Budapest is explosive. Within the five days of racing, stages 4 and 5 will have summit finishes where the overall classification will be decided.

Profile & Route Tour de Hongrie 2023

Stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie is another flat one. Not a pan-flat one, as it features two categorized ascents. However, none of them are significant and a bunch sprint should be inevitable as the race heads into Kezthely.

Profile & Route Tour de Hongrie 2023

Stage 3 will be the first big day for the overall classification. It isn't a serious mountain stage but features a tough final circuit. There is a 4-kilometer climb at 4.7% to be ridden twice before the finish, but the final ascent to Pecs is where the race will be decided. It is 6.3 kilometers long at 5.7% to be ridden twice. The finale is then halfway up the climb, in a 3.5-kilometer climb at 6.1%.

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2023 stage 3

Stage 4 is ultimately the queen stage of the race. It features three categorized ascents before the final of the day. It is one split into two, with a steep initial hilltop that has 2 kilometers at 8.7% finishing with 9 kilometers to go. A short descent follows and then the main part of the climb to Dobogókõ is 8 kilometers long at 4.8%.

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2023 stage 4

Profile & Route Tour de Hongrie 2023

The final day of the race sees the peloton race into the capital. It is not an easy day as the riders take on 15 laps of an urban circuit which has a small hilltop. It's only a kilometer at 4.3% but throughout the day it provides opportunities to attack and for the breakaway to keep on pushing a hard pace. A sprint is expected to wrap up the race however.

Bruce Spingsteen Shuts Down Retirement, Farewell Tour Rumors: 'I Ain't Going Anywhere'

"Farewell to what? Thousands of people screaming your name," Springsteen told a crowd in Philadelphia last week

The Boss doesn't plan to say farewell anytime soon.

On Friday, Aug. 23, Bruce Springsteen shut down retirement and farewell tour rumors during a gig at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, when he reminded his crowd that the E Street Band has "been around for 50 f---ing years."

“We ain’t doing no farewell tour bulls---," Springsteen, 74, said in a clip shared to X (formerly Twitter) . "Jesus Christ. No farewell tour for the E Street Band!”

While speaking to the enthusiastic crowd, Springsteen smiled as he reiterated that his current world tour — next set to stop in Washington, D.C. at the top of September — isn't the last one fans will be seeing him on.

“Hell no… Farewell to what? Thousands of people screaming your name? Yeah, I wanna quit that,” Springsteen added. “That’s it. That’s all it takes. I ain’t goin’ anywhere.”

Guitarist Steven Van Zandt also shut down retirement talk during a conversation with The Telegraph last month, explaining that stepping back is not on the horizon for the E Street Band.

“I don’t see the end anywhere in sight, to be honest, especially in Europe, where we’re bigger than we’ve ever been," he said at the time. "I think we can play every summer for evermore, man.”

Springsteen's latest comments come amid tour date postponements earlier this year, when The Boss pushed back four European shows as part of his E Street Band 2024 World Tour due to “vocal issues.” That included performances in Marseille, Airport Letnany in Prague, Czech Republic, and San Siro Stadium in Milan.

The 20-time Grammy winner previously postponed several tour dates in September 2023  due to peptic ulcer disease .

Springsteen now has a string of dates set for the remainder of the year, and has even played a few surprise gigs here and there this summer — like when he showed up at a Zach Bryan this month to sing a duet of his 1982 song "Atlantic City" as well as their collaboration "Sandpaper" at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

After his Sept. 7 stop at the nation's capital, Springsteen will make his way to Baltimore, Asbury Park, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and beyond in the fall . He'll also be taking his talents to Milan, Prague and Marseille next summer to make up for lost time earlier this year.

Transgender golfer Hailey Davidson competing on women’s tour ‘unfair’, says former LPGA Tour pro

A Scotland-born transgender golfer has come through qualifying to stand only two steps from becoming a member of the LPGA Tour, a scenario that one former professional on the women’s biggest circuit has labelled “unfair”.

Hailey Davidson , the first male-born golfer to win a professional women’s event on the minor leagues three years ago, progressed through the first stages of Q School at the weekend and now goes forward to October’s next phase.

The 31-year-old, originally from Ayrshire but now based in Florida, has said that her intention is “ to make Scotland proud” by earning an LPGA card, despite the likes of Judy Murray calling the ongoing quest as “wrong”.

On Monday, Amy Olson, who finished runner-up in two women’s majors in her decade on Tour, added her voice to the dissenters.

“Unfair” the American posted on social media. “These women have worked too hard and too long to have to stand by and watch a man compete for and take their spot. The only fair path forward is a policy based on sex, not gender.”

However, Davidson, who almost qualified for the US Women’s Open in June, is unapologetic and has recently lashed out at the detractors. “I will never understand athletes who blame a transgender competitor on their own athletic failures,” Davidson wrote on Instagram. “If you don’t take accountability for your failures then you will never actually be good enough to make it.”

Davidson competed as a male in 2015, before beginning hormone therapy and has since rejected claims of an unfair advantage, reporting that the driver goes 30 yards shorter than before gender reassignment.

Other sports have announced increased protections for women’s sport in recent years, but Davidson would not be the first transgender golfer to play on one of the top tours. In 2004, Denmark’s Mianne Bagger qualified for the Ladies European Tour (LET).

Born male in Copenhagen, Bagger began playing golf as an eight-year-old and was considered such a good prospect that as a 14-year-old, they were photographed at a golf clinic alongside Greg Norman.

Bagger underwent a sex-change operation and by the age of 37 had persuaded the LET to change its “female at birth” membership rule and spent a number of years on Tour, recording a few top 10s.

But now 58, Bagger believes there should be limits on transgender women competing in female sports. “I’m seen as a bit of a hypocritical voice, so I just have to take the abuse,” Bagger said in 2022. “I still think there could be access for transitioned women to women’s sport… [but] I just don’t agree with the current, softened policies that are requiring less and less medical intervention of a male-bodied person entering women’s sport.”

12 PGA Tour stars earn Presidents Cup spots at BMW Championship

These PGA Tour stars are headed to Montreal.

Michael Corvo

pga tour scottie scheffler

12 PGA Tour players automatically qualified for the Presidents Cup at the conclusion of this past weekend's FedEx Cup Playoffs event, the BMW Championship.

From September 27-30, the United States will face off against the International Team (no Europeans) at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada.

Following the upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake— the final leg of the PGA Tour's postseason — Furyk and International Team captain Mike Weir will make six captain's selections.

Keegan Bradley — an assistant to Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk in preparation for his own stewardship of the United States Ryder Cup team in 2025 — didn't automatically qualify with his upset victory at the BMW , though he's now a contender for a captain's pick.

“I think being the Ryder Cup captain has put me into this category of sort of player when they haven't really had a Ryder Cup captain that's been playing full-time on the tour,” Bradley said Sunday. “One of my goals was to make that Presidents Cup team. So we'll see. I hope I didn't throw a huge wrench in everybody's plans, but I'm proud to be in consideration.”

Justin Thomas, for instance, will need a strong showing at East Lake — Thomas grabbed the last spot thanks to an 18th-hole bogey from Brian Harman — to warrant consideration.

“I feel like I played well in some big tournaments this year. I just did it earlier in the season,” Thomas said. “I know I'm playing well enough, but that's up to Jim and the rest of the captains and the guys on the team. My hope is that I get to Atlanta and I prove that I belong.”

Weir and Furyk will announce captains’ picks live on Golf Channel on Sept. 3.

For now, here are 12 golfers definitely on Presidents Cup rosters.

PGA Tour players who qualified for the Presidents Cup

International.

Note: The International Team's automatic spots are based on the Official World Golf Ranking.

1. Hideki Matsuyama — Japan (FedEx Cup rank: 3)

Matsuyama, who won the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs , the St. Jude Championship, will be making his sixth Presidents Cup appearance. He won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

2. Sungjae Im — Republic of Korea (11)

3. Adam Scott — Australia (14)

The 44-year-old entered Sunday at the BMW in the final grouping with Bradley, as he seeks his first win since 2020. Scott struggled his way to a 1-over 73, but still moved up from no. 41 to secure a place in East Lake.

He'll be making a record 11th Presidents Cup start for Team International. (Phil Mickelson holds the overall record, with 12.)

4. Tom Kim — Republic of Korea (51)

Kim crashed out of the St. Jude in brutal fashion. Not only did he commit a jarring etiquette infraction , he finished with consecutive double-bogeys to slip to 51st, thereby missing out on the BMW. (Bradley backed into his place.)

Kim has played well this summer — including medal contention at the Paris Olympics and a playoff runner-up to Scheffler at the Travelers Championship. Expect the talented 21-year-old — who burst on the scene at the 2022 Presidents Cup — to reset his mind for Montreal.

5. Jason Day — Australia (33)

Jason Day barely missed out on the Tour Championship, but the former World No. 1 will be in Canada.

6. Byeong Hun An — Republic of Korea (16)

United States

Note: The U.S. team is determined by the Presidents Cup's unique points criteria .

1. Scottie Scheffler (FedEx Cup rank: 1)

Perhaps understandably considering his eventful year, Scheffler has been a bit checked out of the FedEx Cup . The six-time PGA Tour winner in 2024 (not including a gold medal) has a career 2-2-3 Presidents Cup record.

2. Xander Schauffele (2)

Schauffele — the only two-time major winner in 2024 — has been reliable in Presidents Cup play. The 30-year-old is 6-3 in two appearances (2019, 2022). He's partnered seven times with his good pal Patrick Cantlay.

3. Collin Morikawa (7)

4. Wyndham Clark (8)

Clark and Morikawa will represent Team USA again after joining Scheffler and Schauffle in Paris. Clark, who went from PGA Tour journeyman to U.S. Open champion in 2023, will be making his Presidents Cup debut.

5. Patrick Cantlay (10)

Cantlay was the only clutch American during their 2023 Ryder Cup defeat in Rome. He owns a 6-3 record across two Presidents Cup appearances, including 4-3 with Schauffele.

6. Sahith Theegala (12)

A chance for one of the game's rising stars to get a taste of rowdy team competition. There could very well be a place for Theegala, 26, on the 2025 Ryder Cup squad for Bethpage Black.

  • Army Private Who Ran into North Korea Will Plead Guilty to Desertion, 4 Other Charges as Part of Plea Deal

Image of American soldier Travis King during a news program

Pvt. Travis King, the soldier who dramatically ran across the border into North Korea last year , has reached a deal with Army prosecutors and will be pleading guilty to some of the criminal charges against him, according to his lawyer.

Frank Rosenblatt, the attorney, told Military.com in an emailed statement that King will plead guilty to five of the 14 offenses that he was charged with under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. One of the five charges King will plead guilty to is desertion, he said.

King, who had been stationed in South Korea, made international headlines in July 2023 when he left a tour group and dashed across the Demilitarized Zone into North Korea, where he was briefly held. He is slated to formally enter his plea at a hearing Sept. 20 in which "he will explain what he did, answer a military judge's questions about why he is pleading guilty, and be sentenced," Rosenblatt said.

Plea negotiations began about a month ago , postponing what would have been the first legal hearing in King's case, an Article 32 hearing similar to a grand jury proceeding for civilians.

King is being held in Otero County Detention Center in New Mexico, which Fort Bliss , Texas, uses for its pre-trial detainees.

The private was facing a host of charges from desertion and child pornography to insubordination, making false official statements, and assault – only some of which stemmed from his choice to run into North Korea. King has a long history of legal troubles that began more than a year before he bolted across one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world.

In addition to pleading guilty to desertion, Rosenblatt told Military.com in a separate conversation that King will plead guilty to three counts of disobeying a senior commissioned officer and one count of assaulting a noncommissioned officer.

"Travis is grateful to his friends and family who have supported him and to all outside of his circle who did not prejudge his case based on the initial allegations," Rosenblatt said.

Michelle McCaskill, a spokeswoman for the Army's Office of Special Trial Counsel, confirmed that a plea agreement had been negotiated but stressed that "the guilty plea is subject to the acceptance by the military judge."

"If Pvt. King's guilty plea is accepted, the judge will sentence King. … If the judge does not accept the guilty plea, the judge can rule that the case be litigated in a contested court-martial," McCaskill added in an email to Military.com on Monday.

Jonathan Franks, a spokesman for King's family, declined to comment "out of respect for the Army's process."

King's ordeal began after a spate of arrests by South Korean authorities led the Army to order the young soldier back to the States for discipline. However, King never boarded his flight and, instead, wound up on a civilian tour of the border village of Panmunjom, a major tourist attraction along the Demilitarized Zone. He left the tour and ran into North Korea on July 18 , 2023.

In September, North Korea suddenly announced that it would release King back into U.S. custody.

After King’s return to the U.S., Rosenblatt said in a social media post last month that the soldier "spent three weeks in debriefings and reintegration at Joint Base San Antonio ."

Once her son was back in the States, King's mother, Claudine Gates, said that she loved him "unconditionally" and that she was "extremely concerned about his mental health," according to a previous statement provided by Franks.

Since the family entered the spotlight, Gates has been adamant that "something happened to [King] while he was deployed."

Franks told Military.com last year that "there was just a cluster of problems in the fall of '22" and "everything goes to hell." A person connected to King's family said that period roughly coincided with a time when everyone was deeply emotional over the death of King's little cousin.

In addition to Rosenblatt, who is a former Army lawyer and the lead military defense counsel for Bowe Bergdahl, King's legal team includes Sherilyn Bunn, a civilian attorney from El Paso who "has extensive experience on Fort Bliss," according to her firm's website, and two military lawyers.

Tour de Hongrie: Mark Hirschi takes control of race lead with uphill victory on stage 3

Ben Tulett finishes second and Max Poole third

EIBAR SPAIN APRIL 08 Marc Hirschi of Switzerland and UAE Team Emirates competes climbing to the Krabelin 576m during the 62nd Itzulia Basque Country Stage 6 a 1378km stage from Eibar to Eibar UCIWT on April 08 2023 in Eibar Spain Photo by Luis ngel Gmez PoolGetty Images

Mark Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) pulled away on the final climb in Pécs and won stage 3 of the Tour de Hongrie .

Ben Tulett (Ineos Grenadiers) managed to hold on to second place, crossing the uphill finish ahead of Max Poole (Team DSM).

Ineos Grenadiers increased the pace at the front of the race with 2.5km to go, swooping through several sharp corners with Team DSM, Lotto Dstny and UAE Team Emirates trying to position riders into the final climb. Once on the steep slopes of the Allatkert climb, Egan Bernal set the pace for Ineos and launched Tulett.

Hirschi countered to catch his wheel, and the two matched pedal strokes across the steepest section until the Swiss rider pulled away with 1.2km to go. Hirschi soloed to the finish for his first victory of the season.

The golden jersey as race leader transfers to the shoulders of Hirschi with the win. He has a 10-second margin over Tulett, who is second overall. The DSM duo of Poole and Oscar Onley are now third and fourth overall, Poole 16 seconds back and Onley 22 seconds back, tied on time with Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto Dstny) and Matteo Fabbro (Bora-Hansgrohe).

“It was super hard. We went full gas into it [final climb] for positioning. Then Ben Tulett attacked super early. I could just follow, and then I opened it up. I have to go, I had something left. Everybody was on the limit and small differences in the mind can make a big difference in that situation,” Hirschi said at the finish.

"It’s really nice to get my first win of the season and I’m really happy. The race is not over, tomorrow is a hard day so we’ll give it a good shot .”

How it unfolded

An important day for the climbing specialists, stage 3 began with a short lap around Kaposvár, and the peloton headed south to reach the Mecsek Mountain and its capital, Pécs. The hilly route contained six categorised climbs and 2,500 metres of total elevation. The most difficult ascent came on Bárány street on the finish circuits, the 2.3km climb up Allatkert averaging over 11%, with sections up to 20%, tackled three times.

In the opening 100km, many of the top sprinters had already been dropped by the peloton, including Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-QuickStep) and Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers). Five riders had formed a front group that had opened a three-minute gap over the fracturing peloton with 145km to go, the group containing Dries De Bondt (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Cameron Scott (Bahrain Victorious), Filippo Ridolfo (Team Novo Nordisk), Jarrad Drizners (Lotto Dstny) and mountains classification leader Matúš Stoček (ATT Investments).

Passing midway through the 179.9km stage 3, the front group tackled the first of two ascents of the 5.1km Melegmányi with early sections averaging over 14% gradient. Across the top and on the descent, Sebastian Schönberger (Human Powered Health) and Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) joined the leaders.

On the second pass up Melegmányi of the wall in Pécs, it was Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) to accelerate and launch an attack by teammate Jhonatan Narváez (Ineos Grenadiers). Splits formed in the front group as Schönberger led the way for the breakaway. From accelerations behind, Narváez (Ineos Grenadiers), Oscar Onley (Team DSM) and Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) had switched places with Scott and Ridolfo, who had dropped back to chase. Dries de Bondt was able to join Narváez's group, before the six riders joined their forces with 35 kilometers to go.

With 23km to go, the six leaders saw their gap dwindle to under 30 seconds. Finally the pursuit picked up urgency, led by Bora-Hansgrohe, Tudor and Q36.5 and the breakaway faded with 17 kilometers before the finish line. A group of roughly 30 people arrived together to the last climb.

Ineos Grenadiers launched a final attack which launched Tulett and only Hirschi could match the pace. The Swiss rider then countered with 1km to go for the victory.
