The University of Toronto has been ranked the top university in Canada, 21 st globally and third among North American public universities in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings .

The closely watched international ranking, released Wednesday , evaluated more than 1,900 research-intensive universities across the globe based on their performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

U of T – which placed 10 th among public universities worldwide – was 15 th overall in the research environment category, which reflects a university’s reputation for research excellence among its peers.

“The University of Toronto is recognized consistently on the global stage for its comprehensive excellence in teaching, research and impact,” U of T President Meric Gertler said.

“This latest ranking is a tremendous credit to our dynamic community of researchers, learners, teachers and innovators.”

The Times Higher Education ranking assesses five areas – teaching, research environment, research quality, research excellence and industry – and draws from data sources including surveys of scholars, bibliometric analyses of academic databases and information about a university’s population, income and partnerships with industry.

For the 20 th edition of the ranking, Times Higher Education changed its methodology by expanding the number of performance indicators within the research category to include new metrics for research strength, research excellence and research influence, as well as adding an indicator for patents to the industry category.

There was some rearrangement among the top tier of universities compared to the 2023 ranking. U of T swapped spots with University of California, Los Angeles, which took 18 th place, followed by National University of Singapore and Cornell University.

The top five universities in the ranking were: University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and University of Cambridge.

Other Canadian schools in the top 200 included: University of British Columbia (41 st ), McGill University (49 th ), McMaster University (103 rd ), University of Alberta (109 th ), Université de Montréal (111 th ) University of Waterloo (158 th ) and University of Ottawa (177 th ).

The ranking was revealed at Times Higher Education’s World Academic Summit , which is being held in Sydney, Australia, this week. President Gertler spoke in a session on improving Indigenous access to higher education following U of T’s recently announced initiative to cover tuition for students from nine neighbouring First Nations .

Overall, U of T continues to be one of the world’s top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings:  U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities,  Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

Hundreds of people were told to leave Cranberry Portage on the weekend as winds drove the fire close to the community.

Earl Simmons, the province’s wildfire director, says the blaze spread faster than any fire he’s seen.

Some residents are being offered an escorted drive through the fire zone today.

In a social media post, the Rural Municipality of Kelsey says residents who went south to The Pas and wish to relocate north to Flin Flon are being given the opportunity this afternoon.

The municipality says it is not sure how long the state of emergency will last.

The battle is still on to try to get tickets to Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, with the singer performing in Toronto in November and in Vancouver in December. But some Canadians have taken matters into their own hands to celebrate "The Tortured Poets Department" artist, planning a fan experience titled "Toronto’s Version: Taylgate ’24."

Throughout all six dates of the Swift's sold out tour dates in Toronto (Nov. 14 - 16 and Nov. 21 - 23), fans can head to the city's Metro Toronto Convention Centre to take over the North Building. Set to run between 1:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET each day.

The idea is that fans with tickets can meet up and celebrate with other Swifties before the show, and those without tickets can still have a communal Swift celebration. Activities will include an area to make and exchange friendship bracelets, places to add a little more sparkle to their Eras Tour glam, and there will also be live DJ sets, sing-along spaces and Taylgate merchandise for purchase.

There are also plans to have a parent and guardian "waiting lounge" for anyone picking up Swift fans from the concert.

"I have two teenage daughters and they want a place to hang out with all their friends – not just the ones they’re sitting with at the show," a statement from event producer and co-founder Bram Goldstein reads. "With our venue being steps from the Rogers Centre, this event just made sense."

"We have a commitment to create the best possible experience for the artist’s fans and Torontonians; both those who did and didn’t get tickets to the big show," Joel Wolinsky, producer and co-founder of the event said in a statement.

Tickets to "Toronto’s Version: Taylgate ’24" are available for $55 at torontosversion.com for all six dates. While there haven't been any brand sponsorships announced yet, the event organizer have committed to supporting of two charities: Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada and Daily Bread Food Bank .

“We look forward to welcoming fans for Taylgate ’24, and we’re thrilled to be hosting this fantastic event,” Christine Tse, vice president of marketing and communications at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre said in a statement. "Special events like this play a crucial role in drawing out-of-town visitors to Toronto and generate such a positive impact on the local economy."
