  • India's Rich Painting Traditions: Top 4 Must-Visit Places

4-top-places-to-visit-in-india-for-their-painting-traditions

From the pre-historic paintings in rock shelters like Bhimbetka and later ancient caves found in places like Ajanta and Ellora to the sophisticated expressions of the exquisite Mughal-era miniature paintings , to the patachitra of Odisha and the cloth pichhwais of Rajasthan to the modern day renditions during the 19the century Bengal Renaissance, India’s art heritage is a fantastic reflection of the march of time and astonishing diversity of the artist’s metier. Murals, miniatures, paintings on leaves and paintings on cloth, paintings on leather… this heritage is a rich and abiding force which compels the visitors to learn more and more about it on each visit.

Having explored the gorgeous water palaces and pavilions and vibrant bazaars of this historic capital of the Mewar rulers of Rajasthan, making that quick trip to the nearby temple town of Nathdawara comes highly recommended. Nathdwara is a magnet for its beautiful Krishna Temple, in the sanctum of which is enshrined the centuries-old image of the deity, which was rescued from a temple in Mathura from Muslim iconoclasts. But what is interesting here is a new art form which flourished in the bazaars near the shrine called pichhwai. These are wall hangings are paintings rendered on cloth which feature episodes and anecdotes of Krishna’s life. They hung these as a backdrop to the deity–that’s why they are called pichhwai (at the back). Wander around the bazaars near the shrine to buy one. The Metropolitan Museum, in New York, features an 18th century pichhwai on plain weave, dyed cotton painted with pigments and gold leaf.

Goa’s Indo-Portuguese history has distilled the most incredible experiences for the visitor through its churches, forts and temples. But now many visitors get round to focusing their attention on the wealth of art that’s serves as a window into Goa’s past and present. The old churches such as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount and the Archiepiscopal Palace are unique also for the art of sgraffito. This involves the application of red or black soil to a wall and the design being scratched out and filled in with white lime plaster. The ancient art of kaavi, used on walls of temples and houses, is created by using a paste of red soil and charcoal filled into an etched design. The Santa Monica Monastery features superb art works at the Weeping Cross Chapel. Nuns, strictly restricted from interactions with the outside world, created these in the 17th century. A fabulous treasure trove of rare manuscripts and 18th-century church clothing—the only ones in the world where ivory is used as part of the embroidery, is on display at the Museum of Christian Art .

Calcutt a, the first capital of the 200 year British rule in India, witnessed the glory days of the Bengal Renaissance in art and literature in the 19th century. This gave birth to what is contemporary Indian art closely linked to the works of Gagendranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil, Ramkinker Baij and Benode Behari Mukherjee. Jorasanko, home of legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore in ‘Black Town’, was a lively hub for this great cultural movement which began in the 19th century. While enjoying the Durga Puja festivities make it a point to visit Kalighat, home to the 19th century Kali temple—which inspired Bengal’s Kalighat- style paintings.

Following the heritage walking trail in Shimla (Simla of yesteryears) is very much on the cards when unveiling the historic past of this summer capital for over a century of the British in India during their 200 year rule. One of the reason’s Shimla was so important was that it provided the perfect retreat from the blistering summers of New Delhi. Its sylvan beauty and cool environs in the foothills of the Himalaya reminded them of ’home’. Also, the natural beauty–of snowy mountains, forests of pine and fir brooks, meadows, and wild dahlias and roses on hillsides–compelled even amateur artists to pick up a paintbrush to capture the exquisite charms of this hill station. Ramble along a Nature Trail today that takes you past the birthplace of a legendary Hindi writer Nirmal Verma ending Sanat Chatterjee’s art gallery where you can enjoy the display of some of his work.

Inspirational arts forms are some of the most alluring attractions of India’s cultural landscape and over the years have lured visitors, with a creative bent of mind from all over the globe. Make sure your next bucket list for travels in India features at least a couple of places renowned for their painterly traditions, such as the open-air gallery known as Shekhawati in Rajasthan, Tanjore in the south and Thangka Paintings in Ladakh.

Indian Painting Styles (Explained)

Indian Painting Styles (Explained)

There are many painting styles throughout India and they all vary in technique and preferable materials. In this article we take a look at the top 10 painting styles and we explain what makes each one unique.

1. Madhubani

The Madhubani painting style is said to be one of the famous styles in India. Paintings of this style generally feature extremely complex geometrical patterns and shapes. This style represents rituals and is often used in India for special occasions such as festivals and religious gatherings. The folk painting is done by hand with the use of twigs, pens, matchsticks, and many other natural materials with the inclusion of colours and dyes. Madhubani is also known as Mithila art. The art takes place on walls in places of worship, on canvases but in recent years can also be found on products. Creative artists who can achieve this painting style have done works on cardboard boxes for stunning design and even metal barge buckets that can be used for plants.

The term Madhubani refers to the city in India in which the painting style is most famous. Paintings are usually performed by women. An example of the natural dyes that are used to paint is turmeric spice for yellow, leaves are crushed to make green, the black colour is extracted from wood coal powder (charcoal) or cow dung, the white colour is achieved from rice powder, and the majority of the other colours that exist in Madhubani painting comes from the many flowers and fruits that grow nearby. This painting style always uses bright colours to depict the art. The main purpose of Madhubani paintings is that all of the colours are extracted from nature and the result is that the finished painting is eco-friendly and naturally beautiful.

Hand painted bucket mithila

Hand painted bucket mithila

These very special metal buckets are carefully hand painted in Madhyapur Thimi, just outside Kathmandu, Nepal. Each piece is made in the traditional brightly colored painting style from the Mithila region, approx: 25cm high and 26cm. Features a traditional Mithila / Madhubani painting style, is a stunning metal bucket with handle with amazing brightly colored designs, it was handmade and Fair Trade from Nepal, India. This could also be used as a coal bucket in your living room adding to your home decor, storage for items such as arts & crafts, knitting wool, and other materials, or even for pot-pouri! This used to be in our range but the bucket went into our clearance collection and is no longer available.

2. Warli Paintings

warli paintings

This type of painting depicts social life more specifically of humans and animals along with scenes from daily life. Warli paintings are a famous type of tribal art that you would find in a cave. One single painting could tell a whole story. This style originates from the region of Maharastra in India but is extremely popular through many cities such as Dahanu, Talasari, Jawhar, Palghar, Mokhada, and Vikramgad of Palghar district.

Warli paintings are typically done on mud walls as the plain canvas. With the use of a rice paste, water, and gum on the end of a chewed bamboo cane the artist is able to use the bamboo as a paintbrush which gives the style of art a very unique touch. Since the 70s, Warli art has become increasingly popular due to its simplicity. In fact, it has made its way into the film industry as it has the look of native art and tribalism.

3. Kalighat Painting

Kalighat paintings are known for their bright colours and bold outlines. In the 19th century, this style of art evolved as a unique genre in West Bengal. There are various themes for this art but the main depiction is of gods and other mythological characters. This type of art is similar to other styles mentioned above especially in the way that natural dyes are often used. However, Kalighat art is often performed by a group of individuals, with some people working on creating homemade dyes, and others drawing outlines or adding motifs to the background.

Some contemporary styles of Kalighat paintings featured civil themes like crimes, women bathing, the evolution of men and women in society, and even some depictions of freedom. The initial idea of this type of art was to allow visitors of the Kalighat Kali, Hindu Temple, to take away souvenirs but the paintings over a period of time became distinctive from other types of art and some pieces have become very famous such as ‘The lady with a peacock’ and many others.

Phad paintings were created during the 10th century when Chochu Bhat commissioned Joshi Phad painter to make Phad paintings on Devnarayn’s whole life. Devnarayn was a Gurjar warrior from Rajasthan who was the incarnation of Vishnu and he is worshipped as a folk deity.

This type of art is achieved by taking a handwoven cotton cloth, soaking it overnight to thicken the threads, and then it is stiffened with starches from rice and flour. Then it is stretched out, dried in the sun, and rubbed with moonstone to smoothen out the surface to give it a sheen. Phad painting is a style of religious scroll painting that is practiced in Rajasthan and typically the scrolls are painted with natural colours from vegetables.

5. Kalamkari

kalamkari painting

Kalamkari art is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile that is produced in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also very popular in Iran but first came about in the 1970s in Pedana. Pitchuka Veela Subbaiah first started it with his partners in Polavaram but when the partnership fell through soon after he returned to his hometown and started the Kalamkari firm in 1972 that made the block prints commercially. Since then Kalamkari art has been used to tell stories and in ancient times people would travel from village to village telling stories in which some people would draw the story on a canvas and that is primarily how the cultural art was born.

The many tones that are traditional used in Kalamkari painting are earth tones of red, blue, green, and brown. Women are often depicted in shades of yellow, gods are painted in blue, and demons in red or green. From looking at this type of art you can see how the colour tells the story.

6. Miniature

painting of horses running blue background

The traditional Indian miniature painting traces back to the 9th century in the Buddhist palace period. This style of art was influenced by Indian literature and was performed as illustrations as individual paintings that were in a highly detailed composition that is in a small scale. These paintings captured social and cultural life at the time but it wasn’t until the 19th century in the period of the Mughal empire that the art form took shape. Miniature art is often referred to as working in ‘miniature’ and the paintings often have a smooth surface.

Whilst the art is creative there is a general rule for art to qualify as miniature art and that is that the art piece must not be larger than 25 square inches. This type of art was a huge influence in later forming Persian styles and helped other painting styles flourish and the success of the style means that it is now practiced throughout Rajasthan. As with the other painting styles, the miniature style features religious symbols, gods, and the colours are typically made with natural dyes from minerals, vegetables, stones, shells, and even pure gold and silver. The preparation of mixing colours was and still is an elaborate process that can take weeks or months to get the desired result.

7. Kerala Murals

kerala mural standing men smiling

Kerala Mural paintings depict Hindu mythology and date back to the 9th century. The largest mural painting in Kerala is the Gajendra Moksha. The state of Kerala is famous for its murals, geography, beaches, tea, coffee and spice plantations, tourism, culinary experiences, and Ayurvedic treatments. Paintings usually depict temples and palaces throughout Kerala. Kathakali is one of the most popular art forms in India and the entire body of the mural is used to portray a story.

Kerala art gallery is a famous place in which you can buy quality mural paintings. The pieces that you find here are originals from highly skilled artists that have great expertise when it comes to making custom-made paintings. Some pieces consist of colourful art whilst others are merely intricate sketches of gods and goddesses that are highly detailed.

8. Patachitra

Patachitra

Patachitra is another cloth-type picture painting style that follows a traditional process of preparing the canvas. A fine cotton cloth is coated with white stone powders and a natural gum made out of tamarind seeds. This is a natural paint primer to allows the canvas to become a suitable surface for the paint to adhere to. As with other Indian painting styles, paints are usually made naturally.

After the painting has finished the canvas is left to sundry. Artists who paint in the style of Patachitra are known as Chitrakars. The thing that makes this style of painting different from others is that this is one of the oldest art forms of Odisha. Over time the name Paachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta (which means canvas) and Chitra which means picture. The white colour is made from conch shells which are boiled, filtered, and then powdered, and although this is a hazardous process that required a lot of patience the end result is a pure brilliant white. Hingula is a mineral that is used to make red, haritala or also known as the king of stone makes yellow and a lamp black is made by burning coconut shells.

Pichwai is a style of painting that originated over 400 years ago, in the town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan. Pictures made in this style of painting appear detailed and visually stunning. They are made on cloth using a similar technique to Phad and Patachitra.

The ancient form of its art has passed from generation to generation and its theme is devoted towards Lord Krishna. The main purpose of Pichwai other than its artistic nature is to narrate the tales of Krishna. These paintings are rarer than the other styles already mentioned and typically the picture is made to hang in Hindu temples.

Gond painting is a type of folk tribal art that is practiced by the largest tribes in India. The term Gond comes from the Dravidian expression. ‘Gond’ means ‘the green mountain’ and Gond paintings are merely a reflection of man's closest connections with his natural surroundings. Paintings of this type usually start with carefully drawn lines that create movement in a still image.

With the addition of dots and dashes, the art piece has a great sense of movement and the detail is highlighted. Gond art is one of the most unique styles and whilst it originated in Madhya Pradesh it has also been traced back to the state of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh. It is said that the style of Gond art was invented by Jangarh Singh Shyam who is known for paintings, drawings sculptures, and murals.

In Paintings: Journey Across India with Traveller-Artists

tourism in india easy painting

From the Buddhist pilgrims (Fa Hien and Huang Tsang) to the adventure travellers (Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta), India has been the travel destination for centuries. Long before ‘Incredible India’ and its catchy jingle, it was the accounts of these travellers that brought people from around the world to our doors. These accounts described the beauty and richness of Indian heritage, and their readers yearned to experience the exotic for themselves. While some managed to secure a passage to India, others could not. Now, it was up to the traveller artists to transfer India’s allure onto their canvases and let others experience India through their paintings.

India paintings European Artists Edwin Lord Weeks

These traveller artists came from varied backgrounds. Some were authors, poets and musicians, others historians and geographers. A few were even public officials, soldiers and war correspondents! But whether they drew monuments from a bygone era, captured the splendours of the Mughal court, or painted the bright bazaars full of spice and colour, these 19th and 20th century artists knew how to breathe life into their work and make their audiences feel acquainted with a land they had never set foot in.

We’ve compiled some itineraries for you, and our favourite ones are:

1. an architectural adventure with vasily vereshchagin.

Originally a Russian war painter, Vasily Vereshchagin took on a different subject in India. His paintings from his visit to India, first in 1873 and then in 1884, capture the most amazing architectural features; be it of a small monastery in Ladakh or a grand monument like the Taj. Much like Nicholas Roerich , a 20th c. Russian painter, Vereshchagin was also enamoured by the colossal Himalayas. But what set him apart from other painters of his time was his attention to detail. This combined with his use of bright colours created a realistic reproduction of late 19th c. India.

You can see more of his journey through India on our YouTube Video!

2. Explore India’s natural beauty with Marianne North

At a time when women travelling alone were frowned upon, Marianne North travelled the length and breadth of India, solo. A non-conformist in multiple senses, she travelled to touristy places like Jaipur, Agra, Delhi and Shimla, but also went off the beaten path to traverse the isolated villages of Kumaon in Uttarakhand and captured the natural beauty of these hills. As she was also a botanist, plants and flowers are key elements in all her paintings. Even her paintings of famous monuments like the Taj Mahal show her preference for nature.

Marianne recorded her adventures in her diary. About her Shimla residence she wrote:

My window looked over endless hills, with great Deodara branches, their stems and cones for foreground.

3. A postcard journey across India with Hiroshi Yoshida

From the Golden Temple to the Sanchi gateway, Hiroshi Yoshida captured all the major sights of India within his postcard sized paintings. Travelling in the 1930’s, Yoshida used his native Japanese technique of woodblock printing called ukiyo-e . However, this technique faced a set-back with the rise of photography. In order to revive the method, artists, including Yoshida, adopted the Shin hanga method where artists carved and painted bamboo blocks to print images. Yoshida learnt both carving and painting, so that he could create these miniatures from any corner of the world.

These are only 3 of the many, many artists who travelled India. Check out on our playlist to know more such stories!

Art Tourism – A journey through Indian history

Visitors at Jehangir art gallery in Mumbai (Photo: Flickr)

India is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of its cultural heritage, with a myriad of religions, languages, and traditions that have resulted in a diverse array of artistic endeavours, from sculptures and temples to modern contemporary paintings and handicrafts. From the earliest paintings ever found in India, which were animal and human figures scratched onto the Bhimbetka caves in Madhya Pradesh, to 21 st century Indian artists who have been celebrated globally like Satish Gujral and Nasreen Muhamadi, India has a plethora of schools of paintings that are displayed in galleries and museums across the country, as well as a diverse offering of regional crafts tours.

Private art galleries have been established in India since the 1900s, providing a platform where Indian modernists and contemporary artists could sell their paintings to buyers. Museums also let art lovers experience centuries of history and culture through different mediums. Countries have been endorsing art tourism as a way for tourists to appreciate art of different regions, curated specially for gallery owners, artists, collectors, museum curators and art students.

Often, these artists also travel around the world to seek ideas and inspirations for creating new art. Globally, the West, especially countries in Europe and America, is famous for such attractions, such the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. Some tour companies also have tours specially designed for such tourists to travel to locations with unique pieces, explore and engage related to art, such as galleries, museum tours, and even festivals and cuisine events. Although the official concept of art tourism might not be so widespread in India yet, the country boasts a number of masterpieces that are globally recognised.

Here is a list of some of the most unique art galleries and art museums in India that feature world-famous Indian artists and works of art that continue to inspire artists today.

Government Museum, Chennai

A South-Indian Tanjore painting

A South-Indian Tanjore painting

The Government Museum in Chennai, also known as the Madras Museum, was established in 1851. It is the third-largest museum in the world and houses the National Art Gallery that underwent an extensive renovation with a budget of INR 110 million in 2019. It is known for containing rare works of Raja Ravi Varma, who is considered one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian Art. Varma’s works were a brilliant fusion of European academic art and Indian iconography, and he was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal in 1904 by the British king emperor for his contribution to the arts and public interest in India.

One of the gallery’s most unique displays is its collection of Tanjore paintings, which are a classical South Indian painting style primarily religious in its inspiration, originating from the town of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Usually done on wooden planks, the painting style is known for its rich and vivid colours, glittering gold foil work overlaid on gesso work and the incorporation of glass beads and semi-precious gems. Collections of Tanjore paintings are also housed in the British and Victoria & Albert museums in England and in the National Museum of Copenhagen, so the Government Museum is a great place for art-loving locals to see one of India’s artistic gems.

The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi

Another government initiative, the National Gallery of Modern Art was started in 1954 and has over 14,000 paintings both by foreign and Indian artists such as Raja Ravi Varma and the Tagore brothers. Of the Western and Far Eastern artists, NGMA has paintings by those who visited India in the 18 th and 19 th centuries and depicted portraits and exotic Indian scenes in their art, including William Hodges and Emily Eden.

NGMA was established particularly to promote more modern contemporary art from the 19 th century onwards. One of the regional painting schools it features is Kalighat painting, which originated in the then-British-Indian capital of India, Calcutta. Artisan communities used mill-made paper and ink to illustrate romantic drawings of women or satirical paintings of the newly rich, among others. The way these paintings captured the essence of people’s daily lives made it a unique style which even today influences notable artists like Jamini Roy, whose collection is featured in NGMA.

Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai

A Satish Gujral creation

A Satish Gujral creation

The Jehangir Art Gallery is a private gallery in Mumbai, which was established in 1952. It houses some of the finest art creations in the world and boasts paintings from famous Indian artists such as Jamini Roy and Arpita Singh. These artists have made a name for themselves globally and artists all over India line up for opportunities to display their work at Jehangir.

For example, Satish Gujral, who held several exhibitions at Jehangir, was one of the few Indian artists with paintings featured in the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Gujral was one of the most experimental artists in the history of modern Indian art and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1998, as well as international honours like Belgium’s Order of the Crown for Architecture. Thus, galleries like these provide excellent opportunities for Indians to see world-renowned artists in their own neighbourhood.

The Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

The Chandigarh art gallery was founded in 1968 due to the partition of India in 1947. Prior to the partition, the extensive collection of paintings and sculptures belonged to the museum in Lahore but after independence, it was shared between India and Pakistan.

The art gallery holds paintings from prominent artists such as Amrita Sher-Gil and Rabindranath Tagore. Notably, the museum also has several Gandhara sculptures: different forms of Buddha, often uniquely portrayed in a beautiful, Greek-god-like form due to the Indo-Greek influence of the era.

National Museum, New Delhi

Krishna_et_Radha_dans_un_pavillon

The iconic Krishna and Radha in a Pavillion Pahari painting

The National Museum in Delhi was established in 1949 and is especially prominent for displaying the largest collection of miniature paintings in the country, ranging from the time periods of 10 th to 20 th century. The museum contains around 17,000 paintings, which represent important styles of Indian miniatures, such as Deccani (South India), Mughal (Central and North India), Rajasthani and Pahari. The collection also includes a diverse array of murals, cloth and wood paintings.

Originating from the Himalayan hill kingdoms of North India, Pahari painting is one of the most illustrious and lyrically beautiful schools of paintings in Indian art history. They usually capture stories of Mughals, Rajput kings and deities. The most famous Pahari painting called Krishna and Radha in a Pavillion depicts the lovers beneath a jeweled pavilion in a lavish garden of ripe mangoes and flowering shrubs, while the sky fleetingly lights up with a lightning flash – a technique customarily used in Pahari miniatures to signify pleasure and excitement; the original can only be seen by art lovers at the National Museum.

I am Swarna Chitrakar, and this is my story….

I belong to the village of Naya that is around 160 kms away from the city of Kolkata, in India. Our village has found a place on the cultural map of India because of its thriving tradition of Pata-chitra, or traditional scroll painting. I went through the hardships of daily life like any other woman of my community. But I wanted to break free from social shackles and taboos, especially those that prevented painting and singing by women. I settled down at Naya with my husband and daughters and started painting Pata-chitra, encouraged by my father Amar Chitrakar and my uncle Dukhushyam Chitrakar.

Traditionally this art form was practiced by the menfolk. Men primarily painted and sang while the women helped in making colors from minerals, fruits, flowers, seeds and leaves. Women were not supposed to paint the pata themselves. All this has changed now.

Naya was once a poor village, but today it is an active settlement of around 60 families of Patua – the community of scroll painters, many of whom are women. The community is called Patua and all of them have their last name as Chitrakar, meaning painter. I belong to this community of painters. Naya is now a flourishing hub of Patachitra painting and a year round cultural and tourist destination.

At one point of time, this art form was dying as electronic media made inroads into the village community. It was tough to sell the paintings and our survival was difficult. A social enterprise www.banglanatak.com started working in our village to revive the tradition with support of the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre in 2005. There were only around 20 painters and hardly anyone knew the songs. Veteran painters like Dukhushyam, Shyamsundar, Rani Chitrakar trained the young people on painting. Dukhushyam taught singing. Audiovisual CDs were published on our painting tradition. The lost art of the use of natural colour was revived.

In 2010, www.banglanatak.com organized POT Maya a three day fair in our village. They also set up a resource centre. The resource centre provided us much needed space to practice and showcase our art tradition. The fair and the resource centre created a new tourism culture. Tourists and visitors began to pour in with great interest and I could now have a direct communication and interaction with the collectors. POT Maya held in the second weekend of November celebrated its fourth edition in 2014. Our art has found appreciation among the local people as well as across the country and the globe. More and more artists and mainly women are now involved in Patachitra and there are more than 300 painters in our village. It has opened up a new world of freedom for womenfolk particularly. The women who had restricted mobility, are enjoying a new freedom and are travelling across the country. Patuas have now travelled to countries like France, Germany, the UK, Italy, China, The US, Australia and Japan.

Today Patachitra has become a vibrant folk media telling stories not only from epics and mythology but also on new contemporary subjects. We paint on themes like climate change, violence against women, human trafficking or events like 9/11 and tsunami. Collectors and buyers travel all the way to our village to see and buy our paintings. My village Naya has now become a most important tourist destination. The Department of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprise and Textiles is now supporting development of comprehensive infrastructure as our village has emerged as a successful Rural Craft Hub.

Today, I feel so happy to see children in the village taking up brush and color on weekend mornings anticipating visitors. I feel proud and happy that I am a part of this renewed culture.

What can we say, Rajasthan has our heart. The Lake City of Udaipur is every bit magnificent and a completely out-of-the-box city. Kolkata, West Bengal :

Kolkata has a Bengali charisma that makes it one of the best art cities of India like no other. To paint a picture so beautiful you will have to visit Kolkata in Person. India’s astonishing variety of sights has to be seen to be believed. Travelers have devoted lifetimes to exploring the famous places and forgotten corners of this incredible country, driven onwards by the certainty that there’s always more to see.

Mughal palaces, towering Hindu temples, mountain monasteries, lost kingdoms, cultured cities, and genteel hill stations in the foothills of the Himalayas all jostle for attention in a country that is proudly shaking off the legacy of colonialism and repositioning itself as a global superpower. With such incredible diversity on offer, there’s just one question – where do you start?

Well, our advice is to not take on too much during a single visit. Pick an area – the tropical south perhaps, or the northern plains, or the mountain valleys of the Himalayas – and give yourself time to pause and soak up the atmosphere as you work through your must-see list .

Wherever you go, you’re guaranteed a mind-expanding and exhilarating blast of color, soul-soaring splendor, earth-shaking history and moments of pure serenity. Equal parts magic and mayhem, this mix is what makes traveling to India such an intense and addictive experience.

While this was no easy list to compile, we’re proud to present our pick of the ten best places to visit in India.

1. Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Best for romantics and fans of Mughal history

At the top of everyone’s bucket list, the Taj Mahal is as glorious as people imagine it would be – a magnificent monument to lost love, executed in pearl-white marble. Views of the world’s most beautiful building framed by a Mughal archway or floating above the misty Yamuna River will be one of the defining moments of any trip to India.

But there’s more to the former Mughal capital than the Taj. Add on a couple of days so you can visit the architecturally stunning tomb of  Emperor Akbar , his rose-red sandstone former capital at Fatehpur Sikri and sprawling Agra Fort , one of India’s most epic fortifications. Thronged by millions of visitors, Agra is not always relaxing, but it’s eternally fascinating.

2. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Best for intense spirituality

There are few places as beguiling and bewitching as the sacred Hindu city of Varanasi . Millennia-old death rituals play out daily at the cremation ghats that line the bank of the sacred River Ganges, while the maze-like alleyways of the nearby old town reveal dizzying surprises at every turn. We defy anyone to visit without experiencing some internal soul-searching about their place in the universe.

Be ready for some challenges. The hard-edged realities of life and death and the inequalities that continue to cause hardship for many in India are obvious on the streets of the world’s oldest living city. But there are also moments of gentleness – rise at dawn and wander the ghats (riverside steps) and you’ll see Varanasi at its most spiritual, with its attention focused on the sacred river, before the tourist bustle changes the mood.

Planning tip: The best way to appreciate Varanasi’s famous ghats is from a rowboat. Boatmen offer their services from first light at boat stations along the west bank of the Ganges, providing views of a riverfront that has changed only superficially in seven centuries.

3. Mumbai, Maharashtra

Best for urban explorers and Bollywood hopefuls

Mumbai is the perfect place to take the pulse of modern India. The most densely populated city in the subcontinent is home to Bollywood film stars, enterprising market vendors, bankers and executives rushing to work in offices, and fishing families who can trace their origins back to the days when this mighty metropolis was just a humble village.

To understand more about the disparities of life in contemporary Mumbai, take a socially responsible tour through the city’s huge and disadvantaged Dharavi district with Reality Tours & Travel ; 80% of the profits go back to social projects providing opportunities for those left behind by Mumbai’s push for success.

The city’s can’t-miss excursion is the boat trip to the 1500-year-old, UNESCO World Heritage-listed rock-cut temples of Elephanta Island , but fantastic street food is the city’s great leveler. Don’t leave without sampling Mumbai's signature snack, bhel poori – puffed rice and fried dough with lentils, onions, herbs and savory chutneys, best sampled on the beach at Chowpatty or Juhu.

Detour: With time to spare in Mumbai, head to the northern suburbs, where Sanjay Gandhi National Park protects a sprawl of dry forest, home to leopards, deer, monkeys and serene Buddhist cave temples.

View of Thikse Monastery and prayer rocks in Ladakh India

Best for an extraordinary taste of Tibet

In the far northwest of India, sheltered from the monsoon by the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the former Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh is culturally and geographically closer to western Tibet than anywhere in India. In this high-altitude moonscape, towering Tibetan monasteries melt into a landscape of barren rock and wind-sculpted hoodoos (don’t miss fabulous Hemis and Thiksey on the road linking Ladakh to Himachal Pradesh ).

Most visitors start in the atmospheric capital, Leh , before roaming to neighboring valleys for homestay treks and trips to view turquoise salt lakes and colorful masked dances at ancient monasteries. Ladakh wasn't touched by China’s Cultural Revolution, so this is perhaps the closest independent travelers can come to experiencing the original culture of Tibet.

Planning tip: Getting to Ladakh is half the fun. Flights run to Leh even in the depths of winter, but the most enjoyable way in is overland, by road from either Srinagar in Kashmir or Manali in Himachal Pradesh. Buses and shared 4WDs run as long as the passes are open from June to the end of September, or you can tackle the route on a rented Enfield motorcycle.

5. Kolkata, West Bengal

Best for culture vultures

The capital of colonial British India until 1911, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is India’s third-biggest metropolis and the country's intellectual and artistic capital. Spend a few days exploring the energetic bazaars, cultured museums and British-era landmarks, and you’ll soon fall in love with Kolkata’s irrepressible energy.

To really get to know Kolkata, sign up for a Bengali cooking course and visit the revered temple at Kalighat , where the goddess Kali is appeased with sacrifices. With more time to spare, book an overnight wildlife-watching tour to the nearby Sundarbans Tiger Reserve , a legendary stalking ground for royal Bengal tigers.

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to coincide with the festival of Durga Puja in September or October, when vividly colorful effigies of the goddess are displayed in pandals (ceremonial tents) all over the city.

6. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Best for desert drama

The desert state of Rajasthan shows India at its most romantic and soft-filtered. Expect a mirage of camel caravans, ornate palaces, mighty forts, turbaned traders and intense colors, set against a backdrop of shifting desert sands. It’s unbelievably photogenic, but also firmly on the tourist map, so expect to share the experience with a crowd.

The pink-sandstone monuments of Jaipur , the ice-white lakeside palaces of Udaipur , and views of blue-hued Jodhpur from its lofty fort are all stunning experiences, but the city that delivers the biggest jolt to the senses is Jaisalmer , seeming sculpted from the living rock of the desert.

Its tangled lanes, towering fortress and beautifully ornate haveli (traditional houses) could have been plucked from the pages of One Thousand and One Nights , and the surrounding desert is the evocative setting for overnight camel safaris.

Planning tip: While it is possible to stay inside the fortified city, visitor numbers are having an impact on Jaisalmer’s historic heart. We recommend staying outside the walls instead – there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses within strolling distance of the fort.

A traditional rice barge on the backwaters of Kerala (between Alappuzha and Kollam)

7. The Kerala Backwaters

Best for lovers of slow travel

After the dusty, densely populated northern plains, tropical South India offers a lusher, more laid-back travel experience. The quintessential trip here is a slow-paced canal cruise through the emerald-green backwaters of Kerala , a 900-mile network of languid, coconut-fringed waterways, offering views of an ever-changing tableaux of South Indian life.

Hire a traditional houseboat in Alappuzha for a multiday trip, then settle in for a succulent Keralan seafood curry prepared by your personal chef as the sunset blushes over shimmering waters and silhouetted palm fronds. Post-cruise, it’s just a short hop up the coast to historic Kochi (Cochin) , with its cantilevered fishing nets and Kathakali dance theaters.

8. Bodhgaya, Bihar

Best for budding Buddhists

As the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism (plus countless smaller faiths), India is defined by sacred geography. Even here, however, few places resonate more powerfully than the Bodhi tree where Prince Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment to become the Buddha (Awakened One).

The town that has grown up around this sacred spot is home to dozens of Tibetan and Southeast Asian–style temples and monasteries, with a busy program of Buddhist teachings and courses. It’s the ideal destination for any spiritual explorer.

To get a feel for Bodhgaya ’s rhythms, come early to the Mahabodhi complex and settle in beside chanting Tibetan pilgrims to meditate on the nature of impermanence. Travel experiences don’t get much more profound than this.

Planning tip: Bodhgaya is just one stop on the so-called "Buddhist circuit," taking in key locations from the life of the historical Buddha. Local buses run to nearby Rajgir, the site of one of the first Buddhist monasteries, and Nalanda's ancient Buddhist university complex.

9. Darjeeling, West Bengal

Best for a premium cup of tea with a view

Fanned by the cool breezes of the eastern Himalayas, surrounded by manicured tea estates and basking in front of epic Himalayan views, Darjeeling is easy to fall for.

For a perfect day, watch the dawn break over 8586m (20,169ft) Kangchenjunga, learn the difference between first-flush and white teas on a plantation tour, linger over an afternoon cuppa at the  Windamere Hotel , then learn about the Tibetan experience at the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre .

The classiest way to arrive is via the nostalgic, narrow-gauge toy train ; book tickets in advance and check to see if the steam service is running (the diesel train follows the same route, but has less charm). Don’t miss the Buddhist gompas (monasteries) dotted around the city. Below Darjeeling on the fringes of Ghum, historic Yiga Choeling Gompa has a special magic.

Planning tip: Darjeeling isn’t the only interesting stop in the area. Shared 4WDs buzz from Darjeeling to Kalimpong , another historic township with colorful Buddhist monasteries, Himalayan views and pretty flower nurseries.

Virupaksha temple view from Hemakuta hill at sunset in Hampi, Karnataka

10. Hampi, Karnataka

Best for a full immersion in history

Between the 14th and 16th centuries CE, the capital of the Vijayanagar empire at Hampi was home to half a million people, but this ancient metropolis was almost completely abandoned, leaving 3700 stone monuments scattered across a surreal plain of boulders.

This is a place to linger, strolling between the boulders to find carved masonry, forgotten shrines and the handsome remains of some of South India’s most dramatic stone temples.

Glance up as you wander and you’ll see rock climbers tackling bouldering routes using chisel marks made by ancient masons. Rent a motorcycle or scooter and you can roam further afield, taking in the hilltop temple marking the spot where the monkey god Hanuman first met Lord Rama.

Planning tip: Hampi is a short bus ride from the town of Hosapete – get here by overnight train from Goa’s beaches, historic Hyderabad or the cosmopolitan southern city of Bengaluru .

11. Arunachal Pradesh

Best for stepping off the map

Tucked away near Bangladesh, the eight Northeast States – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim – are India’s wild frontier. Until the 1990s, this region of rugged mountain valleys was mostly off-limits to foreigners, and visitor numbers are still small – people who travel here earn the right to call themselves proper explorers.

Sikkim is the most famous destination in the Northeast States, but we’d encourage you east towards the forested foothills and jagged mountains of Arunachal Pradesh , where tribal communities follow a diverse range of traditional belief systems, from the Buddhist Monpa people of Tawang to the animist Apatani people of the Ziro valley.

Planning tip: Travel takes a bit of effort in Arunachal Pradesh; you’ll need to apply for a permit to enter the state, and local transport is patchy. By far the easiest way to explore is with a chartered 4WD and driver (easily arranged in Guwahati in Assam).

Women sitting beside the sacred tank at Amritsar's Golden Temple

12. Amritsar, Punjab

Best for experiencing the power of devotion

India has pilgrimage destinations to spare, but few come close to the vibrant energy of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The most sacred site for the Sikh religion is a gleaming jewel box, floating in a mirror-like sacred pool, thronged day and night by an unbelievable mass of pilgrims. You don’t have to be spiritually inclined to feel its powerful rhythms.

Joining devotees at the Sri Harmandir Sahib – the gold-paneled shrine at the heart of the complex – is incredibly moving. Staying overnight in the pilgrims' hostels that flank the temple compound only adds to the intensity. A donation is much appreciated for accommodation if possible, though pilgrims of all means will be accommodated if space is available. You can also sit down for meals at the temple langar (kitchen), which provides cost-free nourishment to a staggering 100,000 people per day (again, a donation is appreciated if you have the means).

Planning tip: Don’t limit your explorations to the Golden Temple – the surrounding bazaars buzz with energy and atmosphere, with vendors selling everything from embroidered chappals (sliders) to brass and polished steel pots and pans.

13. Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka

Best for feeling like a Maharaja

The atmospheric South Indian city of Mysuru has multiple charms: towering temples, one of India’s most evocative marketplaces, and the almost impossibly extravagant crib that is Mysuru Palace , the ancestral home of the Wadiyar maharajas. No building conjures up the extravagant lives of India’s royal rulers quite so vividly – every room is a fantasy, every ornament an heirloom.

Around the palace are busy bazaars, rewarding museums and a string of Hindu temples in the classic Dravidian (Southern Indian) architectural style. Devote several days to wandering the streets, hiking up to the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill and feasting on fiery vegetarian  thalis (plate meals) in Mysuru’s restaurants.

A large tiger walking over rocks in Bandhavgarh National Park

14. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Best for tiger encounters

The national parks of Madhya Pradesh are some of the best places on the planet to get close to royal Bengal tigers. Seeing one of these striped superstars loping out of the jungle will stay with you for a lifetime – as well as leaving you heartbroken at the thought of how few tigers still survive in the wild.

Everyone has their favorite tiger reserve, but we rate Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve near Jabalpur for the density of wildlife in its central Tala range. Around 70 tigers roam these dry forests, alongside leopards, monkeys, deer and gaur – India’s gigantic wild buffalo. There’s a high likelihood of sightings if you devote several days to 4WD safaris (elephant safaris should be avoided as riding can be harmful to these vulnerable animals).

Planning tip: The best time to see tigers is first thing in the morning – safaris start at 5:30am to catch tigers before they stake out a shady spot in the undergrowth to sleep through the heat of the day.

15. Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Best for religious splendor

South India's Hindu temples are a joyous celebration of the divine, decorated inside and out with vividly colorful depictions of deities and supernatural beings, both fearsome and sublime. In the southern city of Madurai , the towering gopurams (gateway towers) of the Meenakshi Amman Temple provide a three-dimensional guide to the main deities of the Hindu pantheon.

The current temple was constructed in the 17th century, but the site has been sacred to Meenakshi, the queen of the Pandya kingdom and an incarnation of the goddess Parvati, for at least 2000 years. Come early in the morning to watch sunrise bring the temple to life, then pop to the nearest branch of Murugan Idli Shop for some of the south’s best idli (steamed rice and lentil cakes).

Detour: A short bus or train ride from Madurai, Tiruchirappalli – aka Trichy – is another top spot for temple enthusiasts. The looming Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the world’s largest Hindu shrines, covering 155 acres (63 hectares) and topped by 21 deity-encrusted towers. More temples crown the rocky outcrop at the heart of the city, offering epic views over the rooftops.

History of India

India’s history can be broken down into three major phases. The first phase is the ancient period known as Ancient India, which covers thousands of years that began when humans first settled in India. This period includes the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300-1300 BCE), which is considered one of the world’s oldest civilizations and a precursor to modern Indian culture.

In medieval India, a period in Indian history is seen as lasting from the ancient period to the Mughal Empire. This long span of time begins in the 6th century AD and ends in 1526 when the empire was established. Some historians believe that it started later than these dates and ended earlier.

In the early 20th century, India was also experiencing a period of change. In 1857, the Indian independence movement began in Bengal with the first nationalistic revolutionary movement. The British Empire controlled India at this time and it lasted until 1947 when India gained its independence.

Culture of India

India has a rich cultural heritage, reflected in its diverse population. The country’s culture has been shaped by various external and internal influences. Over the centuries, India has seen a significant fusion of Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. These religions are collectively known as Indian religions as they originated in India.

“Unity in diversity” – these are words that do not just hold meaning but can be applied to a country like India. From the time of Mauryas, Cholas and Mughals to the period of the British Empire, India has always been famous for its traditions and hospitality.

Due to warm relations and a sense of celebration, India has a special place in the global community. Its vibrant culture is an amalgamation of religions, festivals, food, arts, crafts and dance. The country is vibrant, eclectic, and attracts many tourists for its culture. Popularly known as the land of God, the country of India has everything from culture to values, customs and traditions that defines its beauty.
