In fact, the great tragedy is that Sri Lanka has so much more to offer than just about any other location in the region. Yet no one knows anything much about the island, save for its beaches, which have been the sole focus of all previous marketing efforts.

In a bid to rectify this glaring oversight, Sri Lanka Tour has undertaken an extensive integrated communication campaign, which showcases the island’s many diverse facets to the world. These international marketing efforts include advertising, international public relations, trade shows, special events, online marketing, and sponsorship activity. There are also ongoing efforts, in key source markets, to create awareness and demand for the Sri Lanka brand. The broader integrated campaign aims to capture the hearts, minds, and imagination of the target audience. An ambitious project by any standard, one which had never been attempted before. Since the campaign's inception, however, extraordinary things have happened, and the world has started to notice. This, in turn, has enabled Sri Lanka to achieve top-of-mind awareness among its target audience. While also impressing international media giants, industry experts, and celebrity influencers. The initial campaign by Sri Lanka Tourism has resulted in millions of dollars’ worth of free coverage that has taken the island and its offering to a whole new audience.

Tourist visa off for Indian arrivals in Lanka

NEW DELHI:  Sri Lanka on Tuesday sought to turbocharge its tourist footfalls by making arrivals from seven countries, including India, visa-free. It is a pilot scheme that kicked in with immediate effect and will continue till March 31, 2024. Indians constitute 21% of total tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka.

Currently, many Asian destinations are competing to raise their tourism market, which fell after Covid pandemic. With the objective of reaching 5 million tourists, the Sri Lanka Cabinet decided to waive tourist visa fee for nationals arriving from India, Russia, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan. It means tourists from these countries will get visas when visiting Lanka without a fee.

The announcement appeared timed with the Indian festival season that has already begun. Sri Lanka hopes to rebuild its wrecked economy partially with enhanced tourist inflow, which has the potential to galvanise the allied sectors even without the visa fee revenue.

“Sri Lanka is fully open and reaching out for tourists. India is our priority market and we are targeting three types of tourists – family, entertainment and Ramayana. We are also working out special deals for Indian tourists and are in the process of tying up with low-cost carriers,” Sri Lankan Convention Bureau (SLCB) chairman Thisum Jayasurya had said earlier. SLCB had led a delegation to India last year in November for road shows to promote tourism.

The SLCB delegation, led by Jayasurya, held road shows in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. “India has always stood strong with Sri Lanka with their boundless love to visit and explore our island. Wonders of our paradise are ready for Indians,” Jayasurya had said. The initial proposal was to issue free tourist visas to arrivals from five countries — India, China, Russia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Policy in 2024

Every traveler planning a visit to Sri Lanka is obliged to secure a visa, either upon arrival or through prior arrangements. For those embarking on a journey for tourism, the mandatory requirement is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This authorization grants a complimentary 30-day visa period and the flexibility of double entry, commencing from the initial arrival date in Sri Lanka and valid for 30 days.

In October 2023, Sri Lanka updated its tourist visa policy 2024 to offer free visas to nationals of seven countries: China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This visa waiver is for a maximum stay of 30 days and can be obtained upon arrival or through an online application. The free visa waiver initiative continues until March 31, 2024, and allows for double entry from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka after October 24, 2023.

Once in Sri Lanka, tourist can extend their stay without leaving the country. Extensions are usually provided in three-month blocks, with a maximum total extension of up to 270 days from the entry.

How to Apply for Sri Lanka ETA Online?

Any traveler planning a short visit to Sri Lanka must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) in advance. Upon arrival, the applicant may be granted a 30-day ETA, with double entries permitted from the first entry date.

To apply for a Sri Lanka ETA online, follow these steps

  • Go to the “Apply” option on the official website of Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration & Emigration .
  • Fill out the form with the required details, such as personal information, passport details, and travel plans.
  • Pay the processing fee with a valid credit or debit card.
  • Submit the form and await a confirmation email, which usually arrives within a few hours.
  • Print the received ETA approval notice to present to the immigration officer upon arrival in Sri Lanka.

As a reminder, residents of China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are exempt from the ETA until March 31, 2024, and will receive a free visa on arrival or through an online application.

The ETA is initially valid for 30 days from the date of arrival but can be extended up to six months. To do this, you will need to apply for an ETA visa extension Sri Lanka.

Can you Apply for Sri Lanka Visa on arrival?

Indian visa for Sri Lankans: Visa types & Application Process

tourist visa charges for sri lanka from india

As a Sri Lankan citizen, you may want to visit India for many reasons: business, medical, student, and the list goes long. The good thing is that the process to get an Indian Visa is easy for Sri Lankan citizens! The following guide covers every aspect of how Sri Lankans get an Indian visa , including the correct method, eligibility criteria, and in-depth detail of the list of Indian visas available to Sri Lankans. We’ll also look at the step-by-step process of applying for an Indian visa as a Sri Lankan citizen and how long it takes to proceed!

Indian visa for Sri Lankans: Visa types & Application Process

How to Apply for an Indian Visa?

The Indian Visa Online offers two methods for applicants to apply for an Indian Visa:

●  Regular/Paper Visa

Let’s understand the difference between both.

Regular/Paper Visa

The applicant is required to fill out a form online, print out the application, and submit it along with other necessary documents at the concerned Indian Visa Application Center or Indian Mission. The visa is then processed, and the applicant can receive it by visiting the Indian Mission/Visa Application Center or, it can also be sent via post.

e-Visa is easier to process since it allows the applicants to do everything online. It includes filling out the application, submitting the fee, receiving and printing their Electronic Travel Authorization (received via email), and presenting it at Immigration Check Post to get the e-Visa stamped on the passport.

Are Sri Lankan Citizens Eligible to Avail e-Visa for India?

Sadly, Sri Lankan citizens are currently not eligible to avail eVisa for India. It is because the Sri Lankan nationality is still on hold to be let into India. And since eVisa isn’t available for Sri Lankans, it means the only way to get an Indian visa for Sri Lanka is by regular/paper visa method.

Also, you can go through the list of countries/nationalities eligible to avail of Indian e-Visa at the official website of Indian Visa Online at the top in the left sidebar.

The Indian government offers several visa categories, each catering to different purposes and durations of stay. This step is made easy after you have finalized your purpose of visit in step 1. Here are the main visa options to consider :

  • E-Tourist Visa: The e-Tourist Visa is ideal for tourists planning a short visit to India for sightseeing, recreation, or casual visits to friends and relatives. It allows for a maximum stay of 60 days and is valid for entry at select airports and seaports in India.
  • Tourist Visa: If you plan to visit India for tourism purposes and your stay exceeds 60 days or wish to enter India through land borders, the regular Tourist Visa is appropriate. This visa can be obtained for a longer duration, typically up to 180 days with multiple entries.
  • Business Visa: The Business Visa is intended for individuals engaging in commercial activities, such as attending business meetings, conferences, or exploring trade opportunities. It is valid for multiple entries and allows for a longer stay compared to the e-Tourist Visa.
  • Employment Visa: If you have secured employment or a job offer in India, an Employment Visa is required. This visa allows for extended stays and is suitable for those intending to work or take up employment in the country.
  • Student Visa: Students planning to pursue higher education or participate in academic programs in India must apply for a Student Visa. This visa allows for a longer stay and is issued to individuals who have been accepted by recognized educational institutions in India.
  • Medical Visa: Individuals seeking medical treatment or undergoing specialized medical procedures in India should apply for a Medical Visa. This visa permits a longer stay and is granted to those with valid medical documents and appointment letters from recognized medical institutions.
