Chapada Diamantina National Park: The Complete Guide

With a landscape full of mesas, magnificent rock formations, and quartzite caves, complete with crystal clear lakes and underground rivers, Chapada Diamantina National Park is the perfect setting for some of the wildest eco-adventures in Brazil. This park is known around the world for its scenic beauty and its history steeped deep in a 19th-century diamond boom. When word got out about this boom, the ensuing diamond rush brought in a slew of prospectors, called garimpeiros, who formed the nearby town of Lençóis as a base for exploring this area. Today, Chapada Diamantina National Park (founded in 1985), or Brazil’s Lost World, encompasses 152,000-hectares (587 square miles) and houses several national monuments. The park's mixed terrain and contrasting topography, as well as an underground water system, attracts those looking to explore the desert wilderness by hiking, spelunking, swimming, and rock climbing.

Things to Do

Before it became a park, the region encompassing Chapada Diamantina National Park was considered off-limits, in an effort to prevent diamond smuggling. But now, the spectacular scenery, which opened the region to tourism, has made it accessible to hikers, bikers, rock climbers, and horseback riders. Combine any one of these activities with a swim in a refreshing waterhole for an adventure-filled day.

This park boasts over 300 kilometers (187 miles) of hiking and horseback riding trails, created by former miners and now maintained by tour guides. The trails take you through the desert, past interesting rock formations and waterfalls, and up and down hills over a varied landscape. Portions of this same trail network can also be accessed by mountain bikers and horseback riders, although an advanced mountain biking skill level is required to tackle them.

Traditional, sport, and bouldering rock climbing routes exist throughout the park on the sandstone rock walls. Some routes even take you up the side of waterfalls. Book a rock climbing excursion with one of the park's hired guides or through a number of different tour agencies. Rappelling and ziplining are also enjoyed activities in this realm.

Highly qualified divers and spelunkers can take advantage of the park's underground caves and lakes. Access to some of these spots is only granted to special groups by environmental protection agencies, however. Still, you can take a plunge in the water at one of the Chapada Diamantina's favored swimming holes, like the Ribeirao do Meio rock slide, the Sossego waterfall, and the Fumaça waterfall (considered Brazil’s highest waterfall until a higher one was discovered in the Amazon).

Extreme adventurists can also engage in the act of free-flying, paragliding, or mountain racing in the park.

Best Hikes & Trails

Chapada Diamantina National Park is a haven for hikers. Explore waterfalls, discover natural rock formations at sunset, and traverse one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Most hikers hire the service of a local guide, although experienced hikers can tackle most of the trails on their own with a reliable GPS.

  • Morro do Pai Inacio: The hike to this postcard-famous rock outcropping is one of the easiest in the park. It's accessible by the main road, located halfway between Lençois and Capão, and requires a 30-minute hike to the top of the plateau. Go at sunset when the rocky walls reflect the light in a display of mesmerizing orange hues.
  • Cachoeira da Fumaça : This 6.2-mile moderate hike is a must-do for those looking to experience a 420-meter (1,300-foot) high waterfall situated next to an equally tall cliffside. The trail starts at Os Campos in Vale do Capão and takes you on a rugged, sun-exposed climb before plateauing out into a savanna. Most people hire a guide for this hike.
  • Cachoeira do Sossego: This 6.6-mile well-beaten trail can be a dangerous encounter during the rainy season, as it follows a river bed and requires navigating over large rocks and slippery stones. Still, it's a good test of your physical abilities in the dry season—a hike that takes you to a 15-meter (49-foot) canyonside waterfall. On the way back, take the road to Riberão do Meio, where a natural slide cascades into a refreshing pool.
  • Vale do Pati: Considered one of the best hiking trails in Brazil, and often compared to the Inca Trail in Peru, Valedo Pati is a multi-day trek that is often tackled with a guide. It takes you through the jungle, by native villages where the locals may offer you accommodations, and hugs the banks of the river. Sites along the hike include spots like Mirante do Pati (a majestic rainforest valley), Morro do Castelo (a square rock formation), and Cachoeirão por baixo (a box canyon with a waterfall).

Cave Diving

Many spelunkers and divers visit this remote park for its unique underground caves and diving spots. The most famous of the subterranean pools for swimming is Poco Azul, as it can be accessed by regular visitors who hire a guide service. Gruta da Pratinha, approximately 390 feet wide and ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 feet deep, can also be accessed by novice swimmers and divers, as natural stairs descend into a crystal clear lake.

Expertise in both caving and diving is required to access the park's other underground lakes. Os Impossíveis (named so for its difficult entrance) rewards you with 100-foot vertical walls, white stalagmites, and access to various tunnels. Poço Encantado, a 120-foot deep sunken pool, has water so transparent that rocks and ancient tree trunks are visible to the bottom. When the sun is just right, light comes through a crevice and creates a blue reflection on the water. (Access to this pond is highly controlled for the environmental protection of its rare and delicate ecosystem.) Poço de Milú (the Enchanted Well), is similar to the Poço Encantado but less restricted. Underwater passageways abound.

Where to Camp

Due to the remote nature of this park, most of the private campsites in the area are located in the surrounding towns within a one- or two-hour drive. These campsites make a great resting point if you're tackling the seven-hour drive from Salvador. However, backcountry camping is permitted inside the park, if you organize a trek with a hired guide service .

  • Camping Mucuge : Located in the town of Mucuge (approximately two hours away from Chapada Diamantina), this campground offers the most amenities in the region. The facilities have tent sites, as well as spaces for motorhomes and campers, complete with power, water, and sewage hookups. Hot showers, a communal bathroom and kitchen, a library, and free Wi-Fi are all available on-site.
  • Camping Ganesha : Slightly closer to the park in Capao (within a 1.5-hour drive to the park), Camping Ganesha gets rave reviews. It boasts a common kitchen area and bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and trees that bear fruit ripe for the picking.

Where to Stay Nearby

There are many lodging options available in the small towns and villages surrounding Chapada Diamantina National Park. Choose from an all-inclusive luxury stay, complete with a guided experience, a modest hotel, or a DIY adventure stay in a fully-equipped chalet—all within a short drive of the park.

  • Pousada Villa Lagoa das Cores : Located 12.9 miles away from the park, Pousada Villa Lagoa das Cores is surrounded by mountains and offers a luxury stay, complete with a holistic spa and a sophisticated restaurant that offers contemporary cuisine. Treat yourself to a room or suite, where no attention to detail is spared. The hotel also offers retreats and experiences with professional guides for a full-service vacation.
  • Chapada Hotel : Chapada Hotel is located 11.5 miles away from Chapada Diamantina and offers a modest stay with luxury apartments, super luxury apartments, and executive apartments, complete with box spring beds, televisions, and air conditioning. This no-frills hotel also features an outdoor pool and an a la carte restaurant with room service.
  • Pousada Bela Vista do Capão : This lodging option is located in Campos, about 13.4 miles away from the park. Here, you can stay in a fully-equipped chalet, complete with a full kitchen, modern bathroom, double and single beds, and a balcony overlooking Capão Valley. This high-altitude retreat receives a gentle breeze year-round and is the perfect option for those who want to be fully independent.

How to Get There

If you're traveling to this park by air, international and domestic airlines fly to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and then connect to Salvador, where you can take a local commuter flight to Lençóis. You can also hire a taxi service to take you from Salvador to Lencois on a seven-hour journey. A travel agency can make the arrangements for you, or you can book directly through the Lençóis Taxi Drivers Association.

If you are traveling from Salvador, you can take one of two daily buses to Andaraí, Mucugê, Ibicoara, Utinga, and Seabra, operated by the Real Expresso line. It's about a seven-hour trip and approximately 267 miles. You can also make the trek by car, which will allow you more freedom on your journey, as well as the convenience of having a car once you arrive.

Tips for Your Visit

  • The climate of Chapada Diamantina makes it an all-season destination, but evening storms provide almost seven feet of rainfall a year.
  • Once the third-largest town in the northeast state of Bahia, Lençóis is now much smaller and is mainly tourist-oriented. You can arrange park tours here yourself, or ask your hotel for help with planning.
  • As the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park, Lençóis has plentiful restaurants and cantinas where you can sip Brazilian beer and trade stories with the locals to learn about the best climbing spots, swimming holes, and cave diving.
  • If you're embarking on a guided trek, make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and pack along a waterproof layer and sunblock.
  • Chapada Diamantina is a remote wilderness area, therefore, some visitors may find it essential to hire a guide who is familiar with the region and trained in first aid. A guide will also enrich your trip with information about the region's fauna, flora, geology, and history.

Operated by Nattrip

The year 2010 marked the beginning of a journey of creation of the company Nattrip. Accessibility to ecotourism and adventure tourism was restricted, especially in Rio de Janeiro. There were still severe restrictions of public use to the existing Conservation Units, which went some way against what the world was experiencing. While other countries created policies to increase protected area visitation in an attempt to increase preservation, using the “understand to protect” approach, Brazil believed that prohibiting access was the best way to protect. Thanks to the work of some conservation, tourism and sports entities, as well as some spheres of public power, this premise has gradually changed, giving space to a greater offer of experiences in the natural environment. We understand that people, whether tourists or residents, needed tours and specialized services to practice the activities that these places provide. This is to promote a healthy life and generate environmental knowledge by insertion into the environment, creating a basis for environmental sustainability, responsibility, mutual conviviality, and protection. That’s when we decided to create a company specialized in the eco-adventure segment, which could promote the sector with responsibility. A form of entertainment that creates environmental education by osmosis. However, the mission of Nattrip was beyond just being a company that provides nature and adventure tours. We design the company’s performance in all aspects of tourism in Brazil, aiming to be a national reference, which can translate into quality assurance. Today Nattrip is one of the main agencies and operators of receptive tourism in Rio de Janeiro, a respected adventure operator in Brazil and has been showing all its power in the corporate, educational and travel segments. “Protect by enjoying and understanding, never forbidding!”

Chiselled bluffs of windswept limestone rise overhead, and precipitous cliffs draped in a shroud of mossy grass serrate the horizon; flat-topped plateaus lie peppered with lichen-dotted rocks and gnarled thorn bushes sway in the highland breezes. All the while, the elusive silhouettes of Brazilian jaguars and armoured armadillos weave between the cactus groves, Snakes hiss, and tropical birds issue a cacophony of squawks and sounds into the orchid-scented air.

In a land of such majestic natural beauty, it’s hardly surprising that the Brazilian government has chosen to treasure this region’s environmental wonders over its subterranean wealth of diamonds and gold. Where mechanised mines were once planned, travellers can now hike meandering trails to eye-watering sights like the Cachoeira da Fumaca, the highest waterfall in the country that spouts plumes of mist and steam across the ridges of the Sincora Range. Others enlist a Chapada Diamantina National Park tour guide from the charming town of Lencois to help them case out the deep caverns of Lapa Doce, or the mirror-like pool of Poco Encantado, or then simply lose themselves between the soaring canyons and waterways of Cachoeira do Buracao—wildlife spotting, stargazing and entirely given over to the indelible call of the wild.

With waterfalls, caves and breathtaking panoramas, discover one of the most beautiful natural parks in Brazil.

A true “jewel of nature” the Chapada Diamantina is a stark contrast to the semi-arid landscapes further inland or the tropical beaches lined with palm trees that you find in the rest of Bahia, the “state of joy.” However, it is a must for any nature lover on a vacation in Bahia.

Located inland in the state of Bahia, about 400km from the regional capital, Chapada Diamantina is a wild and preserved place accessible by air from Salvador. Various ecosystems, ranging from savannah and bush to tropical forest, cover the 1520km² of this national park. The landscape is made up of high plateaus and valleys interspersed with hundreds of crystal clear rivers forming networks of cascades and pools. An ideal setting for visitors to refresh themselves in body and mind.

Today, the  Chapada Diamantina  has become the most important natural park in Bahia. Its rugged mountain areas and rivers divided by waterfalls, and its caves and underground lakes are easily accessible on foot or by vehicle with a local guide. We have chosen tours that will allow you to explore these amazing features relatively comfortably. With a minimum level of physical fitness, all vacationers with no special mobility problems can go on our excursions ; from young to old.

A guide is available to ensure you follow the correct route and that you get the most out of this amazing place, rich in animal and plant life. They will also ensure your tour takes place in the best conditions and at your own pace.

On the Chapada Diamantina tour discover:

The small towns of Lençois and Mucugê The Lapa Doce caves, The Blue well and The Enchanted well The extraordinary view from the top of the Pai Inácio mountain The magnificent Smoke and Mosquito waterfalls

Explore the incredible caves and waterfalls of Chapada Diamantina

Walking is definitely the best way to visit one of the continent’s largest natural parks as the best sites are not accessible by road.

Even if you are not an avid climber or hiker, it is very much possible to see the natural wonders of this region.

Brazil Selection have curated a set of excursions that present the best of the Chapada Diamantina without forcing you to travel long distances. The tours we offer require little physical effort and allow you to follow the ancient tracks of the “ garimpeiros “, or gem hunters, accompanied by a local guide.

During these excursions you will come across a large variety of wild species which live in the various habitats ( savanna, dry forest, rainforest ) contained within the mountainous region and in the local canyons known as “ chapadas” . These geological formations are characterized by their appearance; steep sided mountains with flat summits made up of large rocky plateaus and covered in low vegetation. The valleys shelter denser forests and in the most shady, humid areas, the incredible diversity of a tropical forest is found.

A stunning landscape with waterfalls such as the spectacular “ Cachoeira da Fumaça ,” the second highest in Brazil at 340m ! You can go on a beautiful day trip leaving from the Capão valley, on a descent of about 500m. (It takes around 4hrs walk for the round trip and 2hrs by car). In our 4 day package, we offer an excursion to the highest point of the waterfalls to admire a breathtaking view of the valley and waterfall below.

In our series of spectacular panoramic walks, there is also the excursion to the top of the Morro do Pai Inácio included in the package. This excursion is a good chance to catch the stunning sunset over the valley. From this extraordinary panorama, you can admire the full view of the Chapada in vibrant shades of orange and pink.

The wonders of nature at Chapada Diamantina

Thanks to its rugged landscapes, valleys and its biomass, The Chapada Diamantina collects a large quantity of water during the rainy season from October to April.

With dozens of rivers that flow into the valleys it plays a key role as a reservoir for a large part of Bahia state. For visitors, the attraction is the multitude of waterfalls, streams, pools and other reservoirs creating lots of amazing places to explore.

Included in our package are some of the must see attaractions . At the Serrano river you will discover the multi – coloured cave formed by the erosion of the surrounding sandstone, and also a small crystalline waterfall and the Spring cascade. You will also visit the vast Lapa Doce  cave where mysterious animals seem to come alive in the immense formations. You will visit the Mucugezinho river that flows into a beautiful 20m high waterfall, the “Devil’s well” ( Poço do Diabo ) perfect to bathe in. The most surprising and amazing visit has to be the Enchanted Well  of  Pratinha . You will climb a small ladder to get to an under ground lake of magnificent clear blue water. There is an opening in the rock that lets the sun shine on the water creating an incredible spectacle with the walls decorated with multicoloured arabesques, a breathtaking place ! To finish, you will take a walk to the Mosquito cave . Dominated by the jagged cliffs of the canyons, the rumbling water settles regularly in large natural swimming pools. You can refresh yourself peacefully in these basins whose stones, are of different shades of red.

With this package, you will have seen the essentials of this amazing place and leave with a camera full of impressive pictures and more importantly lots of unforgettable memories of a unique and enchanting wonder of nature.

Lençois: The gateway to the Chapada Diamantina Natural Park

This region was deserted until they discovered gold here, then diamonds in 1844. These finds triggered a rush of gold and diamond diggers trying to make their fortunes.

This is the era when the small village of Lençois was founded and where we recommend that you stay.

Lençois means “bed sheets” in Portuguese and legend says its name comes from the hundreds of tents that appeared in the valley resembling bed sheets drying in the wind. Thanks to the opulence of the local bourgeoisie who were essentially the diamond mine owners, architectural development was very important in Lençois and the other small towns in the region. They still have well preserved, distinctly colonial buildings as well as multicolored houses and small cobbled streets typical of the 18th century that are well worth a visit.

For almost a century, Lençois and the surrounding region existed alongside the sound of pickaxes striking the stone in the diamond mines. It is important to note that the rest of the area was left intact. Apart from some small peasant villages cultivating coffee, the land went unchanged. After the diamond rush, the region was forgotten; victims of economic decline, the people left and nature took over once again.

It was not until 1973 that the heritage institute classified the region as a National heritage site and stopped all mine works. This pushed Lençois into the tourism industry and in 1985, the Chapada Diamantina National park was created. Until the 1990s this destination remained rather secret and the only visitors were hiking enthusiasts who had contributed to developing this activity in the region.

For the last twenty years however, green tourism has developed in and around Lençois and it now has a good tourist infrastructure to welcome travelers from around the world while still retaining its charm and authenticity. There are professional guides and hotels of all categories as well as craft shops and restaurants. Everything you need to enjoy an excellent holiday!

Chapada Diamantina Tours from Salvador

For now there is only the Azul airline company , flying into the Lençois airport from Salvador de Bahia.

There are only 2 flights a week, Sunday and Thursday. So you can choose to stay for either 3, 4 or 6 nights depending on what you want to do during your stay in this fabulous region.

Chapada Diamantina Trip – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 : salvador de bahia – lençois.

On a Thursday or a Sunday, you will take a 1hr flight from Salvador to Lençois where a vehicle awaits to take you to your chosen pousada or hotel. (It is possible to travel from Salvador by coach but it takes about 7hrs! Contact us regarding this option.)

It takes about 45 minutes to reach Lençois from the airport, during this drive you will take in the local countryside, typical of a semi-arid region where the plants are thick bushes, tropical trees and savannah.

Once in Lençois, the driver will drop you and your luggage off at your hotel or poussada. You will have time to check-in and unpack.

You can either relax or go for a wander in the village and enjoy the calm atmosphere while drinking a local beer “ bem gelada ” with a few “ Petiscos”  the local aperitif.

Night at hotel.

Day 2 : Lençois – Grotte de Lapa Doce – Poço do Diabo – Morro do Pai Inácio

After a buffet style breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide and set off on various excursions for the day.

In the morning, you will leave by car to the Grotte de Lapa Doce , an hour from Lençois. This immense cave is entered at one end and exited at another with about 900m of underground trails (there is no lighting, everyone has lamps). This cave has some amazing rock formations resembling animals and other natural shapes, formed by the stalactites and stalagmites.

Lunch is at a local restaurant (included in the program).

Then back on the road to the Mucugezinho river. You walk about 15 minutes from the road along the river to the top of a waterfall. It drops for about 22metres into a large pool called the “The devil´s well ” a natural pool ideal for bathing in.

After a refreshing swim, you continue by vehicle to Morro do Pai Inácio , as the best time to visit is at dusk when the mountains are glowing orange. A 20 minute climb gets you to the top of a hill where there is an exceptional view of the valley below and other hilltops in the area. It’s truly the picture postcard view of Chapada Diamantina , with a panoramic view for miles around of canyons and “ mesas, ” unique characteristics of the landscape .

The whole outing lasts about 8hrs, with 150km done by car and about 6km on foot.

Return to Lençois and night at your hotel.

Day 3 : Lençois – Poço Encantado – Mucugê

Your guide will meet you at reception after your buffet breakfast and you will set off in a vehicle for the day’s outing :

The “Poço Encantado” cave.

Once you are as close as possible by car, you will take a steep track descending into the cave for about 100m. Equipped with a helmet and a lamp you will enter the cave via a hidden entrance where you will descend a ladder (mind your head!). Nothing too difficult. Once at the bottom of the cave, you will be faced with a deep pool of crystal clear water that seems to give off a turquoise light. This is due to the sunlight that enters via a hole in the rock reflecting off the water. This combined with the silence of the cave creates an unreal atmosphere. Simply enjoy for as long as you wish.

Once back on the surface, and back at your vehicle, you will continue on to the little town of Mucugê.

This village is at an altitude of 983m and the road climbs up through a magnificent landscape. Once in this pretty village you can wander the historical  town centre. The climate is cooler and more invigorating and there are pretty colonial houses and also a Byzantine style cemetery.

You will then have lunch in a restaurant recommended by your driver which is included in the program.

On the way back you will stop off at the Mucugê National Park to discover the conservation project for a plant called the “ Sempre Viva” (always living). This decorative endemic plant is on the brink of extinction and so this association is dedicated to saving it. You will also visit the “Garimpo” Museum that retraces the history of the diamond miners of the 19th century and you can learn about their daily life and see the reconstitution of their habitat.

If there is enough time, you can take a dip in one of the two waterfalls nearby and enjoy the surrounding nature.

The outing lasts all day and you will travel 300km by car and about 3 or 4km on foot. Lunch is included.

After this adventurous day, your guide will take you to your hotel for the night.

Day 4 : Lençois – Cachoiera do Mosquito – Salvador de Bahia

In the morning, after your buffet breakfast you will set off with a guide for your last excursion, a visit to the Mosquito waterfall that will take up the morning.

You will set off by car to reach the Fazenda Santo Antonio , a local farm about 32km away then another 8km of track into the heart of the countryside.

On arrival, a short walk of 5 minutes takes you to the top of the waterfall formed by the Mosquito river.

You will see several waterfalls and natural pools and the panoramic view is spectacular.

After a 10 minute walk you will reach the foot of the waterfall where you can take in the full spectacle of the 50m cascade that falls between two steep cliffs.

This place is absolutely magic, ideal for swimming in the natural pools formed by the falls.

You will return to Lençois at the end of the morning in time to pack your luggage and check out of your hotel.

At about 13h00, a private transfer will take you to the airport for your flight.

End of our services.

Chapada Diamantina – Accommodation

Pousada canto no bosque (standard).

Located 1 ½ kms from the centre of Lençois in 12 000m² of garden,  the pousada Canto no Bosque  is the ideal place if you are looking for calm & quiet during your stay. The tables are nicely set outside. It’s an ideal place to stay for nature lovers. Also perfect for families, with large rooms and a big and beautiful space outside to play in.

Pousada Vila Serrano (standard)

The Pousada Vila Serrano  is our favorite place in Lençois. It has 16 rooms and bungalows spread out in a pretty, tree-lined garden. There is a wide choice of lodging, from a single room to bungalows for up to 4 people and rooms with a mezzanine, private terrace or balcony with a hammock. Each room is carefully furnished with taste respecting the Feng-Shui rules of harmony, and in different styles, colonial with a four poster bed or an ecological-design with wooden furniture designed by Zeca Belmonte .  A charming lodge offering excellent value for money for all types of travelers.

Hotel Canto das Aguas (superior)

The hotel Canto das Aguas  is definitely the highest quality hotel you will find in Lençois. On the bank of the river that flows through the village, it has a refined and sophisticated infrastructure built with local materials. The hotel features a restaurant, a beautiful pool in the form of a stream, a sauna, a spa and massage area, a games room and a solarium on the river bank. We especially recommend the suite rooms which offer extra services and are comfortably 65m ² and 80m ². An excellent choice if you are looking for the top accommodation in the Chapada Diamantina.

10 Things to Know Before Visiting Chapada Diamantina

Poço Azul Chapada Diamantina

Chapada Diamantina is one of Brazil’s most glorious national parks, with plenty of options for hiking and trekking through gorgeous valleys, mountain plateaus, and enchanting caves. Before you go, check out our top 10 tips to make the most of your trip.

Guides are a must..

Chapada Diamantina has plenty of trails to explore, but many of them are unmarked or have an unclear route, so regardless if you speak Portuguese or are an avid hiker, you’ll need help. Avoid the stress of getting lost in the wilderness without cell service and hire a guide. This is especially important for overnight treks. In addition to keeping you from getting lost, your guide can arrange stays in local homes if you’re not the camping type.

Chapada Diamantina

Your hotel can help.

Morrão – Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina

Comparing and negotiating prices is normal.

Tour agencies will certain have their set prices, but Brazilians are often comfortable with bargaining, so it may be worth trying. Note that arranging for a private guide should be more affordable than an agency as there’s no commission fee. Remember to be respectful but firm.

Cachoeira do Buracão

Local towns make convenient home bases.

A few small towns near the park offer travelers what need to start their exploring. The most popular is Lençóis, an old mining town with cobblestone streets and old mountain charm—with a Brazilian twist, of course. Plenty of tour companies set up excursions around the area. Approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) south is Vale do Capão with another small town called Caete-Açu, which has a slight hippie feel. This spot is closer to the park, making it easier for one-day excursions, but it is a little less structured than Lençóis. Either town is a suitable base for getting out and seeing Chapada Diamantina in all its glory.

Parque Nacional Chapada Diamantina

The park is larger than some European countries.

The benefits of the park’s enormous size is there’s something to please everyone. The downside: it’s so large you will probably want a car to get around. Hitchhiking is an option, but it’s an unreliable one. Consider going with friends to offset the cost of a rental car and to get a better group deal on tour opportunities . Often single travelers may not be able to arrange a guide just to take one person, so the more the merrier.

Travel with Friends

You probably won’t see everything.

Chapada Diamantina is a national park of epic proportions. It’s larger than some countries and covers diverse land. It’s home to the largest number of caves and waterfalls in all of Brazil and can leave an explorer feeling lost as to what to see first. Take time to consider what you really want to see, whether its the mountain views or the valley trails. Maybe cave diving is at the top of your list—or a multi-day camping trek. You may not have time to see it all, but whatever you see will be memorable.

Sunset at Chapada

Th underground is just as dazzling.

Many of Chapada Diamantina’s best-known views are atop a plateau with sweeping valley view, but the area is also home to an astonishing number of Brazil’s caves, some with super-clear, still waters that can be explored with specialty swimming or diving tours. The deep blue color of the water makes for a #nofilter kind of photo.

Poço Azul

Chapada can get pretty cold.

Although Brazil is known for its bronzing beaches , Chapada Diamantina is far from the coast, and temperatures can drop quickly, particularly at higher altitudes. Pack in layers and prepare for sun, rain, and cooler temps. Pack sunscreen, bug spray, and a water bottle for hikes, and most importantly, wear comfortable shoes.

Pack a hat

Preparing yourself (and your feet) beforehand is essential.

Speaking of shoes, for those not accustomed to hiking, it’s best to start prepping well before arriving in Chapada Diamatina. Take some long walks or practice hikes while carrying the weight you plan to have on the trails, whether that’s a small backpack or full camping pack, and wear the shoes you plan to bring on the trip to break them in. You’ll be better suited to enjoy all those stunning vistas if you’re not sweating it.

Hiking Shoes

Cell service is unreliable.

Another reason to have a guide is the lack of connectivity. Your guide will be able to make arrangements for you sans cell service, which is essential in the park. Of course, there will be an extraordinary amount of opportunities to take Instagram-worthy shots on a trip to Chapada Diamantina, so definitely bring a camera. But know that cell phone service in the park is spotty at best, so save your Snaps for another time. This is the perfect opportunity to leave your phone on airplane mode for a bit, disconnect, and enjoy nature without distraction.

But it is also necessary to come and discover Chapada for its lively and picturesque villages. Capão, Palmeiras, Andarai, Ibicoara each have a particular atmosphere. Some are remarkable for their colonial style and are even classified. This is particularly the case for Lençois, Mucugê and Igatu. It is also a region where culture is very rich: many festivals, traditional festivals and artistic events are organized. The history of the region is also interesting: there are remains of late 19th century diamond mining. Not to mention the gastronomy, but also the hospitality and kindness of the inhabitants of La Chapada, typical of the interior of the Nordeste.
