So, what exactly is elite status in travel — and how can I get it?

Airlines, hotels and other travel providers offer loyalty programs to encourage travelers to book reservations with them. Then, the more you travel with a brand, the higher the level of elite status you can reach, and that often translates into additional perks and rewards, like free hotel breakfast, room and seat upgrades and other perks.

We use the term "elite status" frequently, but some travelers are unsure of what it actually means. In this article, we'll explain the very basics of elite status and how you can get it, and then we'll share other ways to get elite benefits without the status.

What is elite status?

Elite status is the term used for members who have progressed beyond the basic membership of a loyalty program.

You can typically achieve higher levels of elite status based on your spending with a brand and its partners, how frequently you make reservations and sometimes through other activities.

Sometimes, you'll receive elite status simply for having a cobranded credit card.

Airline loyalty programs

Many airlines offer elite status for travelers who fly regularly with them and their partners.

In the past, you would usually earn elite status by flying a certain number of miles or taking a certain number of flights with an airline and its partners each year. However, many airlines have been overhauling their frequent flyer programs in recent years to reward spending (on airfares, with cobranded credit cards, etc.) rather than simply flying.

For example, American Airlines recently implemented Loyalty Points as its sole elite status metric. You earn Loyalty Points whenever you earn base miles.

This means that — in addition to flying — you'll earn one Loyalty Point per dollar when you spend on an American cobranded credit card like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ). Likewise, you can earn when you shop through the American shopping portal , when you rent a car with one of its rental car partners or take advantage of other earning opportunities .

Elite status benefits from airlines include things like complimentary upgrades, priority boarding, free checked bags and higher mileage-earning rates on flights. Some programs also include complimentary lounge access, free checked bags and change fee waivers.

While most credit cards don't automatically get you airline elite status, several cards make qualifying easier. For example, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card earns up to 20,000 Medallion Qualification Miles each year based on your spending. Effective 1/1/24, this benefit will no longer be available, and there will be a new way to earn toward Medallion Status with the card. Learn more at delta.com/skymilesprogramchanges.

Hotel loyalty programs

Hotel chains encourage frequent stays through their loyalty programs, too.

Members can earn elite status in various ways, depending on the program. Some of the metrics include how many stays or nights you book each year, how many points you earn based on your stay, how much you spend on a cobranded credit card or even if you just carry a cobranded credit card, in some cases.

The higher your elite status, the more perks you receive when staying at the hotel chain. Depending on the program and your status tier, the perks might include earning bonus points on stays, complimentary upgrades, free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, lounge access and the ability to gift status to friends or family.

Some hotel credit cards, like the World of Hyatt Credit Card , provide automatic Discoverist elite status and stay credits just for carrying them. This type of benefit can be a great jump-start if you want to earn even higher levels of status than you normally would through stays. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card even extends automatic Diamond status — the top tier of Hilton Honors that normally requires completing 30 stays or 60 nights in a calendar year — as one of its benefits.

Rental car and cruise line loyalty programs

Other travel companies offer elite status benefits within their loyalty programs as well. Depending on how valuable or useful customers find these benefits, they might be compelling enough to cause travelers to book with one brand over another, even when it might be more expensive to do so.

Car rental elite status lets some folks avoid certain fees, enjoy free category upgrades and earn more points. In some cases, car rental elites have a greater selection of vehicles to choose from, too. While rental car companies do not have their own cobranded credit cards, some premium travel credit cards offer rental car elite status as a benefit. You can even match certain airline statuses to rental car programs.

Some cruise line loyalty programs also provide elite status for the best customers. While lackluster at the lower rungs, higher tiers can offer attractive perks such as free drinks, priority service, complimentary laundry and special events.

Elite status vs. credit card benefits

Many travel credit cards offer automatic elite status or similar benefits. Best of all, you don't have to take numerous flights or spend dozens of nights in a hotel to access them.

Many card elite benefits are available immediately after you are approved for your card. However, in some cases, you must manually activate the perks before using them.

Some credit card elite or elite-like benefits may include:

• Automatic elite status . If you're an occasional traveler, reaching elite status can be a challenge. Some travel credit cards include automatic elite status (or elite status via spending) so that you can enjoy elite status perks starting with your first reservation.
• Airport lounge access . Some premium travel credit cards include a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership for access to airport lounges around the world. Some provide unlimited use, while others only include a handful of visits. Certain airline cards also extend membership or access to their specific airport lounges.
• Free checked bags . Many airline credit cards allow cardholders to check a bag for free on the cobranded carrier — but pay special attention to the terms regarding the number of bags, travel companions and whether or not you need to pay for your ticket with the card.
• Priority boarding . Likewise, many airline credit cards include priority boarding among their perks.

How to get premium hotel benefits without elite status

If you don't have elite status with a hotel, you can still receive similar benefits just for booking through these sites, even if it's your first time making a reservation.

Fine Hotels + Resorts

Those with The Platinum Card® from American Express can receive exclusive perks when booking through the issuer's Fine Hotels + Resorts portal. Elite-level benefits include early check-in, late checkout, a complimentary upgrade, daily breakfast for two and an experience credit worth at least $100. Plus, some reservations include a complimentary night for additional savings. The up to $200 annual credit for Platinum cardholders can be combined with these stays.

The Hotel Collection

The Hotel Collection is Amex's scaled-down version of Fine Hotels + Resorts that is available for both Amex Platinum and American Express® Gold Card members. When booking a room, you'll receive a complimentary upgrade and a $100 resort credit. Some hotel offers also include a free night, complimentary breakfast or both.

Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services

Mastercard offers its own hotel booking portal that provides elite-like benefits. When you book through Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services , you'll receive a complimentary daily breakfast, a special amenity worth up to $100 and a room upgrade. Guests may also take advantage of early check-in and late checkout during their stay.

Visa Luxury Hotel Collection

Visa also has a hotel booking program offering elite benefits for eligible credit cardholders. There are over 900 luxury hotels around the world that participate in the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection . When you make a booking through this service, you'll receive several premium benefits at no extra charge. These benefits include an automatic upgrade, free Wi-Fi, complimentary continental breakfast, a $25 food or beverage credit and late checkout.

I’ve written about dozens of credit cards over the years, but a recent travel card caught my eye. While most credit cards have steep minimum spending requirements to earn welcome bonuses, this airline card’s welcome bonus can help you cover a flight or hotel stay -- without spending thousands of dollars. 

The AAdvantage ® Aviator ® Red World Elite Mastercard ® * is one of our picks for the best American Airlines credit cards . And you can earn a 50,000-mile welcome bonus. All you have to do is make your first purchase (no minimum amount) and pay the $99 annual fee in the first 90 days of card ownership. Those bonus miles could help reduce the price of your travel or lodging for your upcoming summer vacation. 

Here’s more about the card and a few flights I found that could make the welcome bonus worthwhile. 

There are a few ways 50,000 miles can help you cut the costs of summer travel. Here are some examples I found looking at flights from Charlotte, North Carolina. 

Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale

I could earn enough points with the welcome bonus to cover the cost of a round-trip flight from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from July 15 to 18 for me and a friend (plus applicable taxes and fees). Plus, I’d have 14,000 points left over for another trip. 

Charlotte to Toronto

Let’s be honest. A trip to Toronto on Father’s Day weekend (June 14-16) might offer a welcome respite from the heat. I wouldn’t get both flights for free, but I’d only pay about $735 out of pocket, plus taxes and fees (based on each point being worth 1.7 cents) for a trip for two. If I paid out of pocket, the flights would potentially cost nearly double -- $1,300.

Charlotte to New York

I could even travel during the Fourth of July to New York City, paying about $120 out of pocket (based on each point being worth 1.7 cents) to cover the remainder of the cost that the 50,000 points don’t cover, plus taxes and fees.

Aside from booking flights directly with American Airlines, you can redeem your welcome bonus miles with its OneWorld partners and other partners, including British Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia and Qantas. But you’ll want to make sure you’re redeeming the miles at an equal or higher rate for the best value. Here are some other ways you can redeem the miles for summer travel. 

Hotel stays

If you book your hotel with AAdvantage Hotels , you’ll get hotel stays at select hotels for fewer miles. For instance, I could use 42,700 miles to cover a three-night stay (June 20-23) at the B Resort, in the Disney Springs Resort, if I’m an AAdvantage credit card member with status. 

That means that even if you have the minimum Gold status with AAdvantage, by earning 40,000 miles, and you have the Aviator ® Red World Elite Mastercard, you can earn the rate. You can reach Gold status with 40,000 miles, so the bonus should more than help you reach that.

If your flight is covered, you’d prefer to drive or you have extra miles, you may be able to cut the costs on your rental car with the bonus, too. You can redeem your miles for vehicles at several rental companies, including Budget and Avis. 

Like American Airlines’ hotel partner, you can redeem fewer miles if you have AAdvantage status and are an AAdvantage cardholder. For instance, you’ll only redeem 21,800 miles for an intermediate vehicle, like a small SUV, for a three-day trip in New Orleans (June 19-22). You’ll use fewer miles for lower-tier cars. 

Beyond the one-time welcome bonus, the card has a few other benefits including: 

• First checked bag free
• Preferred boarding
• Up to $25 in statement credits for in-flight Wi-Fi, food and beverages
• A $99 companion certificate for one guest (plus taxes and fees) if you spend $20,000 on purchases and your account remains open 45 days after your anniversary date 
• Travel coverage 
• No foreign transaction fees

The perks can be rewarding if you’re a frequent American Airlines traveler or live in an American Airlines hub city. But the rewards rate isn’t as lucrative as other cards. You’ll earn 2x AAdvantage miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases and 1 mile per dollar on other purchases. You could earn 4x miles on American Airlines purchases and 1 mile for every $1 spent on other purchases with the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®*, but that card comes with a $595 annual fee. 

If you aren’t an American Airlines loyalist, you may get more value from one of the more general best travel credit cards , which let you earn rewards at higher rates in some categories and offer more flexible redemption options.

That's why it may be surprising to learn that one of my biggest travel game-changers involves spending money with a travel credit card. Like the 41% of Americans with a travel card , I use mine to save money on hotels, flights, and more.

Although the $695 annual fee for my American Express Platinum Card seems steep at first glance, it's actually saved me money in the long run. And, more importantly, it's made my travels much smoother.

Here are just some of The Platinum Card® from American Express benefits I use most often.

My American Express Platinum Card gives me access to the Centurion Lounge

Because I travel frequently, lounge access is important to me. Call me bougie, but I love having a quieter space to sit down and enjoy a meal and a drink before my flight.

As a Platinum cardholder, I can access Centurion and Priority Pass lounges worldwide. Of course, this benefit is only worthwhile if you, like me, enjoy eating and drinking at airports and your home airport has a Centurion Lounge.

With airport restaurants and bars charging sky-high prices for basic food and drink, enjoying complimentary gourmet food in the Centurion Lounge is a treat.

I also get a $200 airline-fee credit

As a Platinum cardholder, I can choose a qualifying airline and enroll to receive up to $200 of statement credit for incidental airline fees each year.

This includes checked bag fees , in-flight purchases, seat assignments, and airport-lounge day passes when I pay for them using my American Express Platinum Card. While these fees might seem small, they add up quickly when traveling frequently.

The $240 digital entertainment credit can be used on things like streaming services and news sites

As a frequent traveler, I rely on digital entertainment, and luckily, my card provides $20 in statement credits each month for some of the most popular digital entertainment services after enrollment.

Peacock, Disney+, The Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal are all services that can be reimbursed if I pay for them using my Platinum card.

I always take advantage of the $200 annual hotel credit

With my American Express Platinum Card, I get a one-time $200 statement credit on a pre-paid booking with Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) or The Hotel Collection (THC) through American Express Travel.

I also get perks like a complimentary daily breakfast for two, room upgrades (when available), and a $100 property credit on top of the statement credit. This can generally be used at hotel restaurants or even spas, but can vary based on each property.

I use the FHR benefit each year on a special stay — this year, I stayed at the historic Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki . I received a $200 credit after paying for my room, early check-in and late checkout, free breakfasts, a room upgrade, and a property credit that I used for a nice dinner and drinks at the pool.

With my card, I can get reimbursed for Clear Plus, TSA Precheck, and/or Global Entry

In my opinion, the worst part of the airport experience is going through security. That's why I take every step possible to make things easier for myself.

With my card, I can enroll to get reimbursed for the $100 Global Entry fee, which expedites customs screenings for international arrivals in the U.S. Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck , which makes the domestic airport-security process quicker.

I also get a $189 statement credit for CLEAR Plus, a paid membership program that uses facial recognition or fingerprints for identity verification at some airports, after enrollment.

I even get credit for Uber Eats and Saks purchases

Another perk of my credit card I can enroll in is a monthly Uber Cash benefit. Each month, $15 is deposited into my Uber account to use on rides — or my favorite, Uber Eats. I also get an extra $20 credit in December.

When I'm traveling and want to stay in, or return from a trip and don't want to hit the grocery store, I'll use the Uber benefit to get delivery using Uber Eats. Just be sure to use the benefit each month, as it doesn't roll over.

I also receive $50 in statement credit from Saks Fifth Avenue every six months after enrollment. I use this for buying gifts or small items, offsetting the cost of a larger purchase, or getting something special for an upcoming trip.

My card covers insurance for rental cars and trip delays

When I use my Platinum card, I don't spend extra money on insurance for rental cars or trip delays.

If I rent a car using my card and enroll in the program, I get secondary rental-car insurance that can cover some damages beyond what my primary insurance would.

I also have peace of mind when it comes to travel delays or interruptions.

If I book a trip with my card and the flight is delayed for more than six hours for a qualifying reason, I can get reimbursed for purchases that resulted from the delay — up to $500 per trip. This could include meals, lodging, and personal items. I hope I'll never need to use it, but it feels good to know I have it.

I find the card pays for itself in benefits

Overall, the benefits I gain from being an American Express Platinum cardholder are worth the $695 annual fee.

Because I travel so often for work, it's nice to know I have access to conveniences like lounges and expedited security programs.
