Travel Advisory: REMINDER – Border measures remain in place for travellers entering or returning to Canada

October 14, 2021 Ottawa, Ontario

On October 12, 2021, the United States announced that in November, they will begin allowing fully vaccinated travellers from Canada to enter the United States at land and ferry points of entry for discretionary (non-essential reasons), such as tourism.

The Canada Border Services Agency would like to remind travellers that border measures remain in place for travellers entering or returning to Canada and that they should get informed and understand their obligations as they make their travel plans.

Travellers should check if they are eligible to enter Canada and meet all entry requirements before heading to the border.

Fully vaccinated travellers coming to Canada must complete the mandatory pre-arrival molecular COVID-19 test and submit their mandatory information including their digital proof of vaccination in English or French using the free ArriveCAN (App or website) within 72 hours before arriving in Canada. Antigen tests, often called “rapid tests”, are not accepted. Fully vaccinated travellers who are eligible to enter Canada continue to be subject to mandatory random testing on arrival.

For short trips, that are less than 72 hours, Canadian citizens, people registered under the Indian Act , permanent residents and protected persons travelling to the United States are allowed to take their pre-arrival molecular test before they leave Canada. If the test is more than 72 hours old when they re-enter Canada, they will be required to get a new pre-arrival molecular test in the United States.

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers who are eligible to enter Canada must continue to follow pre-arrival, arrival and Day-8 molecular COVID-19 testing requirements, and quarantine for 14 days.

Canada Has Issued Travel Advisories For These 9 Countries

After all, that safari you're planning might share space with safety concerns , your next beach holiday could have you dodging unexpected waves of political unrest, and that view of the Aurora you're dreaming about may be dimmed by disaster warnings .

A quick check of Canada's travel advisories could be the difference between a trip to remember and one to forget. So, here are some of the latest countries that could use a closer look, each with its own set of reminders and warnings to consider before you finalize your plans:

Risk level: Take normal security precautions

Why: On January 14, 2024, a volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula near Grindavík, southwest Iceland, prompting evacuations of the area, including Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon , due to dangerous lava flows. Icelandic authorities have closed all access to the eruption site and are monitoring the potential for volcanic gas clouds to affect Reykjavik's air quality. Those in areas possibly impacted by volcanic gases should keep windows closed, avoid using ventilation systems, and stay away from low-lying areas prone to gas accumulation. Fortunately, Keflavik International Airport remains unaffected, and flights are operating as normal.

Why: A nationwide strike scheduled for January 24, 2024, by the General Confederation of Labour Unions is expected to cause significant disruptions across Argentina. Public transportation, public services, and both domestic and international flights may be affected, with potential roadblocks complicating travel.

Travellers to the Greater Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Rosario should exercise a high degree of caution due to heightened risks of petty crime, such as theft and muggings, as well as organized and drug-related crime and violence. Visitors are advised to check their travel plans for January 24, monitor local news for updates on the strike and demonstrations, and follow the advice of local authorities to ensure safety.

Risk level: Exercise a high degree of caution

Why: Ecuador's government declared a nationwide state of "internal armed conflict" on January 9, 2024, after escalating gang violence, in Guayaquil and Quito. The declaration, following a state of emergency announced on January 8, aimed to empower security forces to tackle the surge in violence, marked by small explosions, attacks on businesses, and car burnings.

A nationwide curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. has also been instituted. During curfew hours, individuals are required to remain indoors, except for travellers heading to or from the airport for scheduled flights. Those caught travelling during curfew hours should be prepared to present ID and flight details to authorities.

The state of emergency grants security forces enhanced powers, including the ability to restrict gatherings, enter homes without warrants, and monitor prisoners' communications. Despite these security concerns, airports remain operational, though some flights have been affected. Travelers should contact their airlines to check for any potential delays or changes to their flights. Bus travel may also face disruptions; thus, verifying itineraries and schedules at bus terminals is advised.

For those currently in Ecuador, expect to see a heightened security presence, particularly near prisons. It's crucial to carry identification at all times and adhere strictly to the directives of local authorities.

Why: Following the presidential transition in Guatemala on January 14, 2024, there's a heightened possibility of demonstrations across the country, notably in Zone 1 of Guatemala City. These demonstrations could disrupt travel, affecting access to major roads and possibly leading to safety concerns for travellers. Foreign participants in any demonstrations risk detention, deportation, or being barred from future entry into Guatemala.

Due to very high levels of violent crime, non-essential travel is also discouraged to specific parts of Guatemala City (Zones 3, 18, 19, and 21) and certain municipalities including Amatitlán, Chinautla, Escuintla, San José del Golfo, San Raymundo, and Villa Nueva. The advisory extends to the departments of Chiquimula, Jutiapa, and Zacapa, along with highways RN-7E, CA-11, CA-12, CA-13, and PET-13, where safety concerns are significant.

Risk level: Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)

Why: In Nairobi, travellers should be cautious in neighbourhoods like Eastleigh, Kibera, and Pangani due to high crime rates. Along the coast, areas within 50 km of the Tana River County coast and the coast in Kilifi County pose a heightened risk for kidnapping and attacks.

Counties bordering Somalia, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu, are no-go zones due to the threat of kidnapping and terrorist activities. Likewise, Turkana and Marsabit counties, adjacent to South Sudan and Ethiopia, pose risks of armed banditry and cross-border violence.

For those planning to view wildlife, use a reputable safari service and keep a safe distance from the animals. Kenya's rainy seasons, running typically from late March to mid-June and from October to November, often cause flooding and mudslides, potentially disrupting travel plans and access to essential services.

Why: After the presidential elections on January 14, 2024, Moroni experienced a series of demonstrations characterized by vandalism, clashes between protesters and police, and disruptions to telecommunications. To manage the unrest, authorities imposed a nationwide curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting January 17, 2024, with stricter measures in the Moroni area, where the curfew runs from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

It's important to remember that even peaceful demonstrations have the potential to escalate into violence unexpectedly and can disrupt traffic and public transportation. Travellers are advised to steer clear of areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are occurring to ensure their safety.

Why: Tropical Cyclone Belal recently swept through Réunion , causing disruptions to transportation, power, water and food supplies, as well as telecommunications. Travellers heading to the affected area should reach out to their airlines or tour operators to assess how disruptions could impact their plans.

The situation underscores the broader risks associated with the cyclone season, which lasts from November to April in Réunion. During that period, even minor tropical storms can escalate rapidly into major cyclones, posing significant safety risks and potentially affecting essential services.

If you're considering traveling to Réunion during cyclone season, be ready to adjust your travel plans, including possibly cutting your trip short or canceling altogether, based on the latest weather forecasts and local advisories.

Why: Certain areas near Cape Town International Airport have been identified as less secure, with an increased risk of attacks on secondary roads. To mitigate risks, it's recommended travellers stay on highways and main roads, avoid shortcuts, plan trips in advance, verify travel itineraries with trusted local sources, and consider arranging for an airport transfer.

In addition to crime concerns, South Africa is grappling with nationwide power shortages, which occur regularly multiple times a day, often stretching over several hours. The outages are expected to persist into 2024. While the chance of a complete nationwide blackout remains low, the consequences of such an event would be severe. South Africa has already faced blackouts lasting up to 12 hours within a single 24-hour period. With increased power demand during the winter months of June and July, blackouts may become even more prolonged, leading to expectations of a particularly dark and cold season.

Why: With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled from January 13 to February 11, 2024, travellers should be prepared for potential demonstrations. An increased security presence is anticipated during that time. Visitors are encouraged to stay clear of areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are expected.

Travellers are also warned against all travel to areas within 50 km of the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, including the regions of Bagoué, Bounkani (which encompasses Comoé National Park), Folon, and Tchologo, because of the risk of terrorist activity. Similar caution is urged for regions near the Liberian border — Cavally, San Pedro, Guémon, and Tonkpi — where non-essential travel should be avoided due to crime, insecurity, and recurrent inter-community conflicts.

Federal government tells Canadians to avoid all travel to Israel, West Bank as tensions rise

The government of Canada has upgraded its travel advisories to Israel and the West Bank, instructing Canadians to avoid all travel amid escalating tensions in the region.

Previously, the federal government had advised Canadians to "avoid non-essential travel" to Israel and certain areas of the West Bank.

"With a heightened risk of attacks on Israeli territory, the regional security situation remains highly volatile & could escalate without notice," Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said in a post Friday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Understanding Canadian Government Travel Advisories

Once it is safe to travel again, we strongly encourage all Canadians to check the  Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories page  for information and updates about your destination.

Checking before you book, just before you leave and even after your departure means you’ll be well-informed about any important precautions that you should take.

The Canadian Government will often issue destination-specific travel advisories that provide valuable information that could affect your safety when you’re travelling abroad.  Advisories can be triggered for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to:

• Health emergencies like Zika, Ebola and most recently, COVID-19
• Terrorist threats
• Civil unrest or political instability
• War or military coups

Natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, etc.

Levels of travel advisories. 

Canada has four different risk levels of travel advisories: 

Level 1  - Exercise normal security precautions. This is the lowest level advisory with no significant safety concerns. You’re advised to use common sense and take similar precautions to those you would in Canada. 

Level 2  - Exercise a high degree of caution. When travelling to locations under this advisory, you should be cautious at all times because the government has identified safety and security concerns. This doesn’t mean that you should completely avoid travelling to these countries. Just be alert, plan ahead and be sure to monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities if anything concerning is reported or happens. IMPORTANT: The two levels below are official Government of Canada Travel Advisories and are issued when the safety and security of Canadians travelling or living in the country may be compromised. 

Level 3  - Avoid non-essential travel. Destinations placed under this advisory have specific safety and security concerns that could put you at risk and you should reconsider your need to travel to them. If you are already there, consider leaving if it’s still safe to do so. 

Level 4  - Avoid all travel. There is an extreme risk to your personal safety and security and you should not travel to this area. If you’re already in the country under this advisory, you should leave as soon as it is safe to do so. 

Avoid all cruise ship travel.  With the outbreak of COVID-19, health authorities identified that cruise passengers are at an increased risk of person-to-person spread of the disease. This led to the Canadian Government issuing a new advisory to avoid all cruise travel.

How travel advisories affect your travel insurance. 

COVID-19 has impacted the entire world. As such, when it’s safe to travel again, Canadians should always consider purchasing travel insurance and never leave home without any coverage. It’s also important to understand the significance of travel advisories and how they may influence your coverage. 

When you’re covered. 

Depending on the travel insurance plan you’ve purchased, your policy may cover medical costs depending on: 

• Travel advisories in place before your departure date 
• Travel advisories in place for your destination at the time of your departure 
• The sickness or injury-related expenses you’re seeking compensation for are not connected to the reason for the travel advisory

Example:  If you break your ankle and need care, you will still be covered even if there is a Level 3 travel advisory in place due to COVID-19.

• The travel advisory was issued after the date you left for your trip 
• You weren’t participating in or voluntarily exposing yourself to a risk (like a riot or civil disorder) 

Coverage through CAA Travel Medical Insurance.

For trips departing on or after July 1, 2021. 

Our emergency medical plans already provide coverage for COVID-19 related illnesses when Canadian government travel advisories are at Level 2 or 1 (i.e. “Exercise a high degree of caution” or “Exercise normal security precautions”). 

Our emergency medical plans now also include up to $2.5 million CAD if partially vaccinated, or up to $5 million CAD if fully vaccinated, for COVID-19 related illnesses that may occur when travelling at a time when the Canadian government has issued a related Level 3 travel advisory (i.e. Avoid non-essential travel”).

When you’re not covered. 

The two highest risk levels of travel advisories, “avoid non-essential travel” and “avoid all travel,” can affect your travel insurance, depending on when the travel advisory comes into effect. 

Purchasing Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance under Level 3 and Level 4 advisories may impact your benefits if you are cancelling your trip for COVID-19 related reasons. 

Most travel insurance companies may not cover your claim if: 

At the effective date of your policy, an official travel advisory was issued by the Canadian Government stating “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” for the country, region or city you’re travelling to. 

Example:  The Canadian Government issued a Level 3 advisory on March 13, 2020, for every country in the world due to COVID-19. This meant that if you travelled after March 13, 2020, you would not be covered for any medical costs associated to COVID-19. 

Why?  COVID-19 would be considered a known issue and therefore a general exclusion within the policy. 

Note:  This exclusion does not apply to claims for an emergency or a medical condition unrelated to the travel advisory: 

Example:  If you sustain an injury that was not related to COVID-19 like a broken arm or leg, you would still be covered.

Staying safe and connected.

What’s great about travel is it gives us a chance to get away from it all and just disconnect – even for a short period of time. But by taking a few precautions ahead of time, you’ll be able to truly relax, with confidence, knowing you’re protected. 

When it’s safe to travel again, be sure to remember the following: 

1.    Before you leave.  Make sure to  register with Global Affairs Canada.  This ensures the government knows your whereabouts if something goes wrong, and they can inform you if there’s an emergency back home. Registration is free at  Registration of Canadians Abroad. 

Keep tabs on travel advisories.  Refer to the travel advisories page on the government site or download the Government of Canada’s  Travel Smart app  for up-to-date travel advice and information on your smartphone. The app has information for 200+ destinations and includes advisories, health updates and even emergency contact numbers.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

Travel to Canada

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for passengers entering Canada. Avoid travelling if you have symptoms of COVID-19. See the Government of Canada’s website for more information on COVID-19 and travel.

Public spaces and services

The Government of Canada recommends that all travellers wear a face mask on public transport.

You may be asked to wear a face mask indoors, such as in hospitals or on public transport. You may need proof of vaccination to visit settings such as care homes.

Local authorities in Canada can introduce restrictions or measures at short notice. Comply with the rules and advice of the local authorities. Check the COVID-19 guidance for each province and territory .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Visa requirements

Most people need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada – not both.

You do not need a visa for short visits (normally up to six months). You will need an eTA instead. Check entry requirements and find out if you need a visa or an eTA for your visit using this tool.

You may need to provide fingerprints and photos at a visa application centre to apply for permanent residence or a study or work permit. Find out if you need to give biometrics. If you do need to give biometrics, see the list of biometrics collection points .

When you arrive, you must show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay, even if you are staying with family or friends.

Contact Canada’s High Commission in the UK if you are unsure about visa requirements or your eligibility to enter the country, for example, if you have a criminal record or have been arrested.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

You must get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter or transit Canada by air, unless you’re exempt. Read the list of exemptions on the ETA website . If you enter Canada by land or sea, you don’t need an eTA. However, you must travel with acceptable travel documents and identification .

If you have British-Canadian dual nationality, you cannot apply for an eTA. You need a valid Canadian passport instead.

Visa and eTA scams

Some  unauthorised websites  charge for submitting visa applications. These websites are not associated with the Government of Canada.

If you think you may have been a victim of a scam, use the eTA Check Status tool to confirm if your eTA is valid. If it has been 72 hours since you applied, and you have not received a confirmation of your application, complete this enquiry form .

Transiting through Canada

You must have a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to transit Canada, unless you are exempt.

Travelling with children

If only one parent is present, carry a letter of consent from the non-travelling parent. Immigration officers have the right to question children using simple and appropriate language to see if there are any concerns about child abduction.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be taken into - and out - of Canada . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Banned food products will be confiscated and you could be fined. Check the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website for more information.

If you visited a farm, or had contact with wild animals before entering Canada, and intend to visit a farm during your stay, you must complete the relevant section in your Customs Declaration Card. For more information, see the Government of Canada’s website on biosecurity .

Is it safe to visit Mexico? What Canadians must know about the updated 2024 travel advisory

It might be the third-most-visited destination for Canadians after the United States, but Mexico isn't considered a low-risk country for travellers. 

The Canadian government continues to advise tourists to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting Mexico, highlighting the country's "high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping." 

In November 2023, the United Nations stated that over 100,000 people are  currently missing in Mexico , characterizing the mass disappearances as "alarming," according to Reuters.

In December 2023, the Mexican government released the findings of their Disappeared Persons Search Strategy, revealing the scope of missing people in the country. However, the document "ambiguously" categorized roughly 80,000 individuals "due to the lack of sufficient data ," said Amnesty International. 

Other violent crimes, including armed burglaries and physical and sexual assault, are common in many places. Many robberies happen at airports, currency exchange bureaus, or ATMs.

Petty theft, including purse and bag snatching, is also common, particularly in popular tourist areas or during crowded festivals or protests.

Updated Mexico travel advisory for Canada in 2024

Canadian travellers do not require a visa to visit Mexico but their passport must be valid for their stay in the country. It is always a good idea to ensure your passport is valid for six months after you return home from travel. If you become ill or injured while in your destination, you may not be able to travel home. Having a buffer for your travel document before it expires ensures you won't have trouble coming home. 

In 2022, Canada and its neighbours south of the border issued updated  advisories for parts of Mexico  due to violent crime, including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery. 

There continue to be high rates of these types of crime in popular tourist destinations such as the Mayan Riviera (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Tulum), and Acapulco. Criminal groups and drug cartels are also present in tourist areas and bystanders can get caught in crossfire.

Disputes between taxi and ridesharing application drivers may occur in these popular tourist destinations. Drivers generally don't target tourists but you "be caught up in these incidents and harassed or injured."

In Mexico City, government-authorized taxis have licence plates starting with “A” or “B." Other taxis at stands will have their company's logo and the plate number stamped on the side of the car. Official taxis in Mexico City are pink and white. Users can validate the pink and white taxis on the CDMX app.

Buses are relatively safe in the capital city but you should use VIP or executive class transportation when travelling to other cities.

Avoid all travel to the Guerrero State 

Canada continues to advise against any travel to the Guerrero State due to the aftermath of  Hurricane Otis . The area has grappled with increased criminal and gang activity following the natural disaster. 

The cities of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Taxco are excluded from the advisory. 

Avoid non-essential travel to these areas in Mexico

The Canadian government warns against non-essential travel to the following areas due to high levels of violence of violence and organized crime

• all Colima, except the city of Manzanillo
• all Coahuila, except the southern part of the state at and below the Saltillo-Torreón highway corridor

• the area south of and including Highway 45D between Irapuato and Celaya
• all Michoacán, except the cities of Morelia and Patzcuaro
• the Lagunas de Zempoala National Park
• the municipality of Xoxocotla
• the area within 20 km of the border with Sinaloa and Durango
• the city of Tepic
• all Nuevo León, except the city of Monterrey
• all Sinaloa, except the cities of Los Mochis and Mazatlán
• all Sonora, except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos and Puerto Peñasco
• all Tamaulipas
• all Zacatecas

What happens if you are caught committing a crime in Mexico?

If you are caught committing a crime, even a "minor" one such as smoking outside a public building or public urination, you could be detained. 

Penalties for breaking the law in Mexico can be more severe than in Canada. Travellers can be held in pre-trial detention for 72 hours before a trial.

Paying a fine may secure an early release from detention but is not guaranteed.

Smoking is prohibited in all public places except for clearly marked designated smoking areas. Some places tourists can no longer smoke include beaches, parks, hotels, and restaurants. If you are caught  smoking in public,  you may be fined.

What to do if you need help while you are in Mexico 

In case of an emergency in Mexico, dial 911. 

Contact roadside assistance if you run into an issue on a highway. The Angeles Verdes is a highway patrol service that provides free assistance on all major toll highways from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

Iranian attack on Israel expected ‘sooner rather than later’, says Joe Biden

President said US are ‘devoted to the defence of Israel’ as he urged Tehran to show restraint

Joe Biden has said he expects an Iranian attack on Israel “sooner rather than later” and issued a last-ditch message to Tehran: “Don’t.”

“We are devoted to the defence of Israel . We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden told reporters on Friday.

Earlier the White House national security spokesperson John Kirby warned that the threat of a significant Iranian attack on Israel remains “viable” despite Washington-led efforts, including calls to Tehran from the UK and Germany, to deter a serious escalation in the conflict in the Middle East.

The White House comments came as several countries, including India, France , Poland and Russia, warned their citizens against travel to the region and Israel’s defence minister, Yoav Gallant, said his country was “prepared to defend [itself] on the ground and in the air, in close cooperation with our partners”.

Later CBS, quoting two unnamed US officials, reported that a substantial missile and drone attack could be launched as early as Friday evening, as a number of countries urgently warned their nationals of the risk of escalating violence in the region, and Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, convened a security assessment.

Appearing to underline that report, Javad Karimi-Ghodousi, a member of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, said: “After punishing the Zionist regime in the coming hours, this villain will understand that henceforth, wherever in the world it attempts to assassinate figures of the resistance front, it will again be punished with Iranian missiles.”

German airline Lufthansa said on Friday its planes would no longer use Iranian airspace and extended its suspension of flights to and from Tehran until Thursday.

Qantas has paused its non-stop flights from Perth to London because the 17-and-a-half-hour flight is possible only by using Iranian airspace.

Iran has threatened reprisals against Israel for a strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria on 1 April, in which seven members of the Revolutionary Guards including two generals were killed, sparking fears that an already volatile climate in the Middle East could quickly spiral further.

Tehran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said on Thursday that Iran felt it had no choice but to respond to the deadly attack on its diplomatic mission after the UN security council failed to take action.

Speaking to reporters, Kirby said the prospect of an Iranian attack on Israel was “still a viable threat” despite concerted efforts by Israel and the US in recent days to deter it .

“We are in constant communication with our Israeli counterparts about making sure that they can defend themselves against those kinds of attacks,” Kirby said. He confirmed that the head of US Central Command, Gen Erik Kurilla, was in Israel talking with defence officials about how Israel could be best prepared.

Israel has said it is strengthening air defences and has paused leave for combat units.

On Friday, France ordered the evacuation of diplomats’ families and warned nationals in several other countries, including Israel and Lebanon, and alerts were issued by Canada and Australia. The US also restricted travel within Israel for US diplomats and their families.

In its strong warning on Friday, the French foreign ministry advised citizens against travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories and said French civil servants were banned from conducting any missions there.

The advisories followed a number of media reports that Israel was preparing for the prospect of an attack from Iran, possibly as soon as this weekend.

A US official told the Wall Street Journal that American intelligence reports indicated an Iranian retaliatory strike “possibly on Israeli soil” as opposed to against Israeli interests elsewhere, adding that the strike could come within 24 to 48 hours.

The same report, however, also reported an individual briefed by the Iranian leadership as saying no final decision had been taken by Tehran.

The newspaper reported US officials as saying that the US Navy had repositioned two destroyers in the region in order to protect US and Israeli forces.

While analysts had initially speculated that Iran may not rush into a response, concern has grown in the last two days over the potential for direct conflict between Iran and Israel after years of proxy conflict between the two enemies.

More recently experts have suggested that Iran now feels it is required to act militarily to restore its balance of deterrence with Israel.

On Wednesday, Joe Biden said Iran was threatening a “significant attack” against Israel and that Washington would do all it could to protect Israel’s security.

The US president’s comments in turn followed a televised speech by Iran’s leader saying the attack in Damascus was equivalent to an attack on Iran itself. “When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said. “The evil regime must be punished, and it will be punished.”

The Israeli military said it was fully prepared for any strike. Israel was “on alert and highly prepared for various scenarios, and we are constantly assessing the situation,” the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, R Adm Daniel Hagari, said at a press conference. “We are ready for attack and defence using a variety of capabilities that the IDF has, and also ready with our strategic partners.”

According to reports in the Israeli media, the IDF believes that Iran or one of its proxies are most likely to attempt to strike a military target rather than civilian centres, although some sites such as the Kirya, Israel’s defence headquarters in Tel Aviv, are located in city centres next to shopping malls, offices and restaurants.

Concern over a significant escalation in the Middle East conflict, which has already drawn in Hezbollah in Lebanon, pro-Iranian groups in Iraq and Yemen’s Houthis, came as Israeli forces continued to fight Palestinian militants in the north and centre of the Gaza Strip.

Residents of al-Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza said dozens were dead or wounded after Israeli bombardment from air, land and sea that had followed a surprise ground assault on Thursday, and that houses and two mosques had been destroyed.

France, India, Russia, UK issue travel warnings over Israel-Iran tensions

Warnings come as Tehran promises reprisals against Israel for the deadly April 1 attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria.

Countries including France, India, Russia, Poland and the United Kingdom have warned their citizens against travelling to Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and, in some cases, the wider region amid threats of an Iranian attack in response to a strike this month on its consulate in Damascus.

Iran has threatened reprisals against Israel over the strike in the Syrian capital on April 1, which killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two generals, leading to fears of an escalation of violence in the Middle East.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on Friday advised its citizens against travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the ministry added that relatives of Iran-based diplomats will return to France and French civil servants are now banned from conducting any missions in the countries and territories in question.

The UK told its citizens to avoid all but essential travel to Israel and Palestine over the “possibility of an attack on Israeli territory from Iran”.

In an update, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office warned against “all travel” to northern Israel, the Gaza Strip, areas near Gaza and the occupied West Bank – excluding occupied East Jerusalem and Route 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Russia strongly recommended its citizens “refrain from travelling to the region”, emphasising security risks in Israel, Lebanon and Palestine.

“The situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone as well as in the area of the ‘Blue Line’ between Lebanon and Israel remains unstable,” its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry also advised against travel to Israel, Palestine and Lebanon.

“It cannot be ruled out that there will be a sudden escalation of military operations, which would cause significant difficulties in leaving these three countries,” it said in a statement. “Any escalation may lead to significant restrictions in air traffic and the inability to cross land border crossings.”

India’s statement covered Iran and Israel, calling on Indians not to go to the two countries until further notice in view of the “prevailing situation in the region”.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said Indian citizens who are in the two countries should observe “utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum”.

Germany meanwhile warned its citizens to leave Iran specifically, saying escalating tensions could affect exit routes.

“In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation,” the Foreign Office said. “German citizens are at concrete risk of being arbitrarily arrested and interrogated and being given long prison sentences. Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk,” it added.

Separately, German flagship airline Lufthansa extended its suspension of flights to and from Tehran until Thursday and will not use Iranian airspace during that time.

Real and viable threat, US says

The United States has restricted its employees in Israel and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba areas.

An imminent attack by Iran on Israel is a “real” and “viable” threat, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists on Friday, adding that Washington would make sure the Israelis “have what they need and that they’re able to defend themselves”.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Joe Biden said: “We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed.”

The top US commander for the Middle East, General Erik Kurilla, is also in Israel for talks with its military officials on security threats. His trip was moved up from a previously scheduled date “due to recent developments”, Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said on Thursday.

After Kurilla discussed the tensions with Iran with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Friday, Gallant said the US and Israel were “shoulder to shoulder” in facing possible threats.

“We are prepared to defend ourselves on the ground and in the air, in close cooperation with our partners, and we will know how to respond,” the defence chief added.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting a person familiar with the matter, reported on Thursday that Israel was preparing for an attack by Iran as soon as Friday or Saturday.

Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut, reporting from East Jerusalem, said the Israeli army announced that it was preparing on all fronts offensively and defensively.

“A couple of weeks ago, the Israelis increased their alertness level, calling up reservists and bolstering air defence systems,” she said, adding that Israeli officials said they were prepared for anything.

Israel has bombarded the Gaza Strip since October 7 and sent in ground forces, killing at least 33,600 Palestinians and injuring more than 76,000. Hamas’s October 7 attacks on southern Israel killed more than 1,100 people there.

Israel has also stepped up strikes against Iranian personnel and allies in Syria and Lebanon and has traded near daily cross-border fire with the Lebanese group Hezbollah since the start of the war.
