What Customers Say

This is my third tour with Lebanon tours and travels. All the tours were perfectly managed and led by excellent guide. On this tour, Pierre was a fantastic tour guide. I was worried that the long day maybe too exhausting but it worked out fine. It was nice to be in a private tour for the tripoli tour. It was my favorite and the most memorable excursion so far. I can highly recommend them.

April 12, 2024 - Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved  here .

USAID worker killed in Israel, agency says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

A staff member with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) died Friday in the Israeli port city of Jaffa, the agency announced.

The male staffer was with USAID’s West Bank and Gaza mission, the agency said in a brief statement.

USAID did not provide details on the circumstances around his death or his identity or citizenship.

“He was a dedicated member of our team for more than two decades, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues,” USAID said.

USAID is working with the US Embassy to work out details about the fatal incident and its follow-up investigation, it said.

US expects Iran to carry out direct strikes against targets inside Israel, sources say

From CNN's MJ Lee and Natasha Bertrand

The United States currently expects Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel and that Iranian proxies could also be involved in carrying out the attacks, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence.

The targets would likely be both inside Israel and around the region.

The beginning of a state-on-state conflict between Iran and Israel would mark a serious escalation in the region that the US has hoped to avoid.

US sees Iran moving military assets including drones and cruise missiles, sources say

From Natasha Bertrand and Oren Liebermann

The US observed Iran moving military assets around internally, including drones and cruise missiles, signaling that it is possibly preparing to attack Israeli targets from inside its own territory, according to two people familiar with US intelligence.

It is not clear whether Iran is preparing to strike from its soil as part of an initial attack, or if it is posturing to try to deter Israel or the US from conducting a possible counter strike on its territory.

One of the people said the US had observed Iran readying as many as 100 cruise missiles.

Some context: The Iranians want their retaliatory strike on Israel — a response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate last week in Damascus — to be "significant," one of the people familiar with the intelligence said. But they also want to avoid getting embroiled in a direct war with Israel and the US, CNN has reported, which is why US intelligence has assessed that Iran may use its proxy forces to launch the first attack.

Israeli settlers storm village in West Bank and kill at least 1 Palestinian. Here's what you should know

From CNN staff

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars — and leaving at least one Palestinian dead — in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

The settlers attacked Al-Mughayyir village, east of Ramallah, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, according to Amin Abu-Alia, the head of the village council. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • More Israeli attacks: An Israeli airstrike early Friday killed at least 29 people and injured dozens more after troops targeted a house belonging to the well-known Al-Tabatibi family in eastern Gaza City, according to a local health official. Israeli forces also surrounded and attacked the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, wounding several journalists and at least one other person. And in the occupied West Bank, troops killed two Hamas members in a raid on the city of Tubas, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
  • Hezbollah-Israel clashes: Around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon on Friday evening, according to the Israeli military. Some were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. Israeli warplanes also carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, the IDF said.
  • Iranian threats: US President Joe Biden told reporters Friday he expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," with the White House adding that there is a "very credible" threat of Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel. Additionally, the US Defense Department is moving additional assets to the Middle East region, a defense official told CNN, as the US and Israel brace for the potential attack . Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla on Friday discussed preparations for the  potential attack .
  • Warnings amid Iranian threats: France , Germany, Canada and the United States are among countries that are warning their citizens not to travel to the region due to the threat of an Iranian attack against Israel.
  • Humanitarian aid: The Israeli military does not understand how humanitarian operations work, a top United Nations official said Friday, maintaining there is a "degree of mistrust" that needs to be resolved between the IDF and nongovernmental organizations on the ground in Gaza.
  • Sanctions: The European Council has  adopted sanctions  against three Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad entities , in light of "their responsibilities in the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks" that occurred across Israel on October 7. The US is also sanctioning four leaders of Hamas’ cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on Friday.

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Natasha Bertrand

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials.

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem and CNN’s Benjamin Brown in London

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year.

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added.

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

US President Joe Biden gives remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus on Friday in Washington, DC.

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel.

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.

Middle East latest: Real danger of 'devastating conflict', UN warns - as Israel agrees 'response required'

The Israeli war cabinet is said to be in agreement that a response is required to the Iran attack - although members remain divided over a timeframe. Meanwhile, the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, says the Middle East faces "a real danger of a devastating, full-scale conflict".

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron will be speaking to Sky News on the crisis in the Middle East at 7.20am.

We'll be bringing you all the latest on what he says as we get them.

Palestinians should "avoid returning to the northern Gaza Strip", the IDF spokesman for the Arab media has said this morning.

Avichay Adraee wrote on X that the northern of the enclave was a "dangerous combat zone".

He said the IDF was repeating calls for people to remain in humanitarian areas and shelters in southern Gaza.

"Avoid trying to return to the northern Gaza Strip, in order to preserve your safety," he said.

Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials have said that Iran gave wide notice days before its drone and missile attack on Israel, but US officials have said Tehran did not warn Washington and that it was aiming to cause significant damage.

Most of the drones from Iran's attack were downed before reaching Israeli territory, though a young girl was critically injured and there were widespread concerns of further escalation.

Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that Iran gave neighbouring countries and Israel's ally the US 72 hours' notice it would launch the strikes.

Turkey's foreign ministry said it had spoken to both Washington and Tehran before the attack.

"Iran said the reaction would be a response to Israel's attack on its embassy in Damascus and that it would not go beyond this. We were aware of the possibilities. The developments were not a surprise," said a Turkish diplomatic source.

But a senior official in Joe Biden's administration denied Mr Amirabdollahian's statement, saying Washington did have contact with Iran through Swiss intermediaries but did not get notice 72 hours in advance.

"That is absolutely not true," the official said.

"They did not give a notification, nor did they give any sense of these will be the targets, so evacuate them."

Tehran sent the US a message only after the strikes began and the intent was to be "highly destructive" said the official, adding that Iran's claim of a widespread warning may be an attempt to compensate for the lack of any major damage from the attack.

Iran attacks Israel

On Saturday night, Iran launched a massive aerial attack on Israel, saying it was in retaliation to an airstrike on its embassy in Syria at the start of the month.

More than 330 drones and missiles were fired at Israel, with the Israel Defence Forces claiming to have downed some 99% of them.

One young girl was injured, while damage was limited to a single Israeli air base - which is not thought to be severe.

RAF jets and US aircraft were involved in defending Israel, intercepting drones before they arrived in the country.

The attack marked a significant escalation in the Middle East and the Israeli war cabinet is said to be in agreement that a response is required - although members remain divided over its scale and timeframe.

It came after Iranian Revolutionary Guard commandos hijacked a cargo ship linked to Israel in the Strait of Hormuz earlier on Saturday morning.

Repelling from a helicopter, they boarded the MSC Aries and steered the vessel - and its 25 crew members - towards Iran.

Israel said Iran would "bear the consequences" for its actions, and demanded its allies sanction the country and proscribe the Guards as terrorists.

Iran is targeting Israel in response to the 1 April airstrike that killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi - a senior commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' overseas Quds Force, and six other officers as they attended a meeting in the Damascus embassy compound.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog told Sky News that the current situation "felt like a war" which Iran had effectively declared.

Gaza ceasefire talks

Zooming in to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and last week began with hope of a potential ceasefire in Gaza, with talks resuming in Cairo and sources in the Israeli government telling Sky News that Benjamin Netanyahu was "desperate" for a deal.

Hamas confirmed over the weekend it had rejected an Israeli proposal - the fifth time it has done so since the last ceasefire agreement collapsed at the end of last year.

"We... reaffirm our adherence to our demands and the national demands of our people; with a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of the occupation army from the entire Gaza Strip, the return of the displaced to their areas and places of residence, intensification of the entry of relief and aid, and the start of reconstruction," Hamas said.

Another backdrop to all this was Israel withdrawing all but one brigade from southern Gaza - prompting further hope until it explained it was to prepare for future operations.

However, yesterday saw the IDF announce it is calling up two further reserve divisions for "operational missions in the Gaza Strip",

We also learned that a date had been set for a future operation in Rafah - which is currently sheltering 1.4 million Gazans. The international community has warned Israel that a ground operation there could have devastating consequences - but Israel believes an assault is necessary to eradicate the threat from Hamas.

Interestingly, senior Biden administration officials told CNN that Mr Netanyahu's pronouncement that a date has been set for an offensive in Rafah was bravado.

So far, more than 33,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Hamas-led authorities there.

Israel's military strategy 'not coherent'

Israel's military strategy in Gaza is "barely coherent" at present,  military analyst Professor Michael Clarke  said on Tuesday.

"The Israelis are leaving an awful lot to chance now because they've got one brigade, north of Khan Younis, and nobody near Rafah, where they say they will conduct an offensive at some point. And that will take, by their estimation, four to six weeks.

"So, to be honest, the strategy is looking barely coherent at the moment from a military point of view."

Have a watch of Clarke's analysis...

Rishi Sunak last week defended the UK's decision not to suspend arms sales to Israel, saying "none of our closest allies" have done so.

The British prime minister said the UK has a "long-established process" relating to the arms export regime and "we review these things regularly".

"That's led to no change. Actually none of our closest allies have currently suspended existing arms licences either, so we continue to discuss these things with our allies," he said.

Meanwhile, the UK participated in the largest airdrop of aid into Gaza on a single day last week. Led by the Jordanian armed forces, a total of nine nations and 14 aircraft participated in the operation, delivering essential food, water and other supplies to civilians.

How Gaza conflict could be worsening Yemen's humanitarian crisis

On this edition of the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson is joined by Alex and Yemen-born producer Ahmed Baider to explore how Houthi attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, ostensibly in support of Gaza, are preventing aid from getting into Yemen.

Iran's ambassador to the UN has told Sky News that Israel's promise of a significant response to Saturday's attack is "a threat, not an action".

Amir Saeid Iravani was speaking exclusively to Sky's James Matthews after an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Sunday.

You can read more of what he said in the story below:

US secretary of state Antony Blinken talked with counterparts in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey on Sunday about Iran's attack on Israel.

The US State Department said each country's representative was called separately.

Mr Blinken told them the US doesn't want the Middle East conflict to get any worse and will continue to support Israel's defence.

He and Egypt's foreign minister Sameh Shoukry also talked about the need to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, protect Palestinian civilians and to strike an immediate ceasefire deal securing the release of all hostages.

Iranian ambassador to the UN Amir Saeid Iravani spoke to Sky's James Matthews after the UN Security Council meeting.

He was asked about Israel's threat of a significant response to his country's attack and he replied: "I think it is a threat, talk, not an action."

"An empty threat?" Matthews asked.

"They know that - they know that what would be our second retaliation, so they understand the next one will be most decisive."

Apologies for the poor sound quality in the clip.

Joe Biden spoke to two US Air Force squadrons on Saturday night to thank them for their involvement in defending Israel against an Iranian attack over the weekend.

Mr Biden commended the members of the 494th and 335th Fighter Squadrons "for their exceptional airmanship and skill".

494th is based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) says its forces, supported by US European Command destroyers, destroyed more than 80 one-way attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles on 13 and 14 April.

The weapons were among more than 300 missiles and drones launched from Iran and Yemen towards Israel in retaliation for Israel's attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on 1 April.

Iran's revenge attack on Israel caused little damage as most of the weapons were shot down by Israel's Iron Dome defence system and with help from the US, UK, France and Jordan.

Does Washington hold the key to de-escalation in the Middle East?

Or is the situation too far gone for the Biden administration to make any difference?

Here, our US correspondent Mark Stone examines whether one of the world's great powers can convince Israel not to retaliate...

US says it will defend Israel but would not be part of Iran attack response: Live updates

O ne day after Iran launched a historic missile and drone strike on Israel, the U.S. stressed Sunday that it is committed to defending its longtime ally − but it would not be a part of any responsive action that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government could take.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. is not seeking escalation and does not want a war with Iran.

A U.S. official who briefed reporters emphasized the U.S. was not involved in the initial Israeli strike that killed two Iranian commanders in Syria earlier this month and led to Iran's assault on Saturday. The official indicated President Joe Biden sought to take the temperature down in a call with Netanyahu on Sunday night.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Meanwhile, top Israeli officials who huddled Sunday back retaliation but are divided on the method and timing, Reuters reported. Netanyahu's five-member War Cabinet was expected to meet again to weigh a response to the attack, which has ratcheted up global concerns about a wider Mideast war.

War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz vowed Iran would pay. "We will build a regional coalition and exact the price from Iran in the fashion and timing that is right for us,” Gantz said.

Israel and Iran have long been engaged in a so-called shadow war, with Iran using its proxies − militant groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen's Houthi rebels − to target Israel, which has undertaken targeted assassinations inside Iran.

But the attack marked the first time that Iran directly targeted Israel from its own territory. The assault underscores how the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza , which began with the militants' attacks on Israeli border communities on Oct. 7, risks spilling over into a broader regional conflict.

Will it spark a wider war? Israel's long-simmering conflict with Iran moves out of the shadows.

Developments:

∎ U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" program that he would try to pass aid to Israel this week. The White House later confirmed that Biden convened a call Sunday afternoon with Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to discuss the urgent need for the House to pass the national security supplemental as soon as possible.

∎ The Israeli military lifted restrictions early Monday, saying children can return to school. Nationwide restrictions were enacted as Israel went on "high alert" Saturday and prohibited school activities and restricted gatherings to 1,000 people, the Times of Israel reported.

∎ Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Sunday for the third time this weekend to review the combined operation by the United States, Israel, and their partners to defend Israel from attacks launched from Iranian territory and by Iran's proxies. Austin emphasized that while the United States does not seek escalation, it will continue to take all necessary action to defend Israel and U.S. personnel.

∎ Biden spoke Sunday with Jordan's King Abdullah II and strongly condemned the attack launched by Iran that also threatened Jordan. Both leaders noted that they are monitoring the situation and will remain in close touch over the coming days.

∎ The U.S. and Iran were in contact through Swiss intermediaries both before and after Iran's drone and missile attack, a senior Biden administration official told Reuters on Sunday. The official, who was not named, also said reports that Tehran gave regional countries 72 hours notice of the attacks were not true.

∎ Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps' intelligence unit warned Iranians Sunday against any pro-Israel social media posts after some people in Iran have voiced support for Israel after Iran's attack.

Iran defends attack on Israel

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said Sunday that the country's action was necessary and proportionate. He added that while Tehran does not seek an escalation or war in the region, it reaffirms its right to defend itself.

"If the U.S. initiates military operations against Iran, its citizens, or its security and interests, Iran will use its inherent right to respond proportionately," he said.

UN chief urges restraint after attack

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for maximum restraint Sunday after Iran’s attack on Israel and reminded members of the U.N. Security Council that acts of reprisal involving the use of force are barred under international law. He also condemned the attack and warned against further escalation.

Guterres told member states during a Security Council meeting that the U.N. charter prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," Guterres said.

US-Israel alliance 'ironclad'

In the wake of Saturday's attack by Iran, Schumer called the United States' commitment to Israel's security "ironclad."

Hundreds of drones and missiles from Iran had been fired in Israel's direction, but Schumer, speaking during a Sunday news conference following a call with Biden and congressional leaders, noted Israel and a U.S.-led coalition were able to take down about 99% of the munitions.

Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for Israel's Defense Forces, said in a Sunday briefing that out of more than 120 ballistic missiles launched by Iran, a small number penetrated Israel's border. The rest were shot down. He said an Israeli air force base in southern Israel sustained some "minor damage to infrastructure."

US-led coalition played key role in stopping attack

Israel's response to the historic Iran strike was boosted by a U.S.-led coalition of warplanes and naval assets that helped intercept 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles , according to a U.S. official.

U.S. fighter aircraft and guided-missile destroyers knocked down some of the incoming missiles and drones, according to the official who was briefed on the operation but not authorized to speak publicly. Israel’s Arrow, David’s Sling and Iron Dome also took down most of the attack.

G7 nations vow to 'avoid further escalation'

A group of nations that includes some of the world's top economies said Sunday that they are fully committed to Israel's security.

Group of Seven nations said in a unanimous statement that Iran's attack on Israel risked "provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation."

Biden met Sunday with the group, the White House said.

"This must be avoided," G7 leaders said. "We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives."

The group also said it planned to work closely together "to end the crisis in Gaza," and recommitted to working toward a permanent cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas, release of all militant-held hostages and the delivery of more humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

Will Israel retaliate against Iran?

Iran's armed forces chief, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, told Iran's state TV on Sunday that if Israel retaliates, Iran's response would be "much larger" than the overnight drone and missile assault.

Bagheri also warned that if the U.S. backs an Israeli retaliation it would lead to the targeting of U.S. military bases.

In a separate statement, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said "any new Israeli adventure will be met with a heavier and regretful response."

Will US go to war with Iran?

Kirby said Sunday that the U.S. is not interested in a battle with Iran.

"The president's been very clear: We don't seek a war with Iran, we're not looking for escalation here, we will continue to help Israel defend itself," Kirby said on NBC’s "Meet the Press."

When asked about potential threats to U.S. troops in the region, Kirby said the Pentagon is staying vigilant. “We have not seen any attacks on U.S. troops or personnel in the region or our facilities and nothing to report to this morning. But we’re obviously going to watch that very, very closely."

− Elizabeth Beyer

British leader says British jets shot down drones

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Sunday that British military jets also helped thwart Iran's attack. “I can confirm that our planes did shoot down a number of Iranian attack drones,” Sunak said.

He appealed for calm in the region to avoid an escalation of the conflict. “If this attack had been successful, the fallout for regional stability would be hard to overstate," Sunak said. "We stand by the security of Israel and the wider region, which is of course important for our security here at home, too. What we now need is for calm heads to prevail.”

Palestinians in Gaza see Iran attack as payback

Many Palestinians in Gaza, which has been under constant bombardment from Israel for months, applauded the Iranian attack.

“Whoever decides to attack Israel, dares to attack Israel at a time when the whole world acts in its service is a hero in the eyes of Palestinians regardless of whether we share their (Iran’s) ideology or not,” said Majed Abu Hamza, 52, a father of seven, in Gaza City. “We have been slaughtered for over six months and no one dared to do anything."

The Israeli military said Sunday that it will soon call up two reserve divisions for operations in Gaza.

More than 33,000 Palestinians have died amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel has vowed to crush Hamas after the Oct. 7 border attacks by militants, who killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostage.

Lives lost in Gaza: Visualizing the death and destruction of Israel's war in Gaza

Congress could quickly agree on Israel aid, Rubio says

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., seemed to suggest Congress could quickly send aid to Israel, without sending anything to Ukraine.

“We could go on Monday to Washington, D.C., and we could pass aid to Israel, right away,” said Rubio, vice chair of the Senate select committee on intelligence.

Aid to both countries has stalled , as several House Republicans have opposed sending additional funding to Ukraine. A $95 billion aid package to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan sits currently stuck in the House after passing the Senate in February.

Rubio said he is confident, though, that if the Senate were to send the House an Israel-only aid bill, that the lower chamber would support it.

Iran's attack on Israel: How did we get here?

Israel never confirmed it was behind an April 1 attack on an Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Syria, that killed seven of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps officers, including two senior military commanders: Brig-Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Brig-Gen. Mohammad Hadi Haji-Rahimi.

However, Israel has carried out dozens if not hundreds of strikes on Iran-aligned groups in Syria and elsewhere in recent years . Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in response to Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks, cross-border assaults on northern Israel by Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups in Lebanon and Syria have intensified.

Iran severed all diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel after its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Israel's airspace reopens after attack

Israel reopened its airspace Sunday after Iran's attack led to its closure and caused flight cancellations. Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan also said their respective airspaces had reopened to commercial traffic.

EL AL, Israel's flag carrier airline, said its operations had resumed , but many flights were delayed or canceled.

Major Iranian airports have cancelled all flights until Monday, the country's state media reported.

No anesthesia after 6 months of war: Pregnant women in Gaza Strip face starvation

Hamas says Iran had 'natural right' to attack Israel

Iran's ally Hamas, which has been fighting Israel in Gaza for more than six months , defended the drone and missile attack on Israel.

"We in Hamas regard the military operation conducted by the Islamic Republic of Iran a natural right and a deserved response on the crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus and the assassination of several leaders of the Revolutionary Guards," said Hamas in a statement seen by the Reuters news agency.

On Saturday, Hamas rejected a new cease-fire proposal from Israel, which is trying to secure the return of hostages seized by Hamas in its Oct. 7 attack .

U.S. Embassy lifts 'shelter in place' order

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem lifted its "shelter in place" order for U.S. workers. In a statement , the diplomatic mission said that the "threat of drone and/or missile barrages has diminished."

The embassy did not lift more general travel restrictions in Israel for its employees and their families, reiterating that their personal travel is limited to within and between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva.

Iran attacked Israel. What happens now?

World leaders and officials from China to the U.K. expressed alarm in the wake of Iran's attack on Israel and called for both Israel and Iran to exercise restraint and to avoid further escalation.

"The EU strongly condemns the unacceptable Iranian attack against Israel," Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, said in a post on social platform X . “This is an unprecedented escalation and a grave threat to regional security."

Jordan's Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said that any escalation would lead to "dangerous paths."

Jonathan Panikoff, director of the Atlantic Council think tank's Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, wrote in a blog commentary that "Iran’s launch of ballistic missiles, in conjunction with over 100 drones, puts the region on the precipice of a broader war that almost no one seems to actually want; one that most actors − the United States, Arab states, even Hezbollah − have sought to avoid over the last six months."

Panikoff added that, "At best, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is almost certain to respond and take steps to attack Iranian targets, probably in Iran, in a manner that will be specific and contained and won’t lead to another significant Iranian response. At worst, the Israeli response will be intense and include the bombardment of important Iranian sites."
