Playa Flamenca Tourist Guide: BEST Things to See & Do

Playa Flamenca is a small beach resort just south of Punta Prima and north of La Zenia on the southern Orihuela Costa Blanca.

One of the large developments in Playa Flamenca is the La Florida urbanisation.

How To Get To Playa Flamenca

From Alicante airport, take the N332 road to Cartagena. Stay on this road for approximately 44Km, or 35 minutes, driving at normal speed. By-pass Santa Pola, La Marina, Guardamar, La Mata, Torrevieja, and Punta Prima. Pass through the next small roundabout, and you will be approaching a slip road to the right which is signposted for Playa Flamenca.

The easiest option is to get a Playa Flamenca airport transfer from either the nearest airport which is Alicante airport or Murcia airport to the south. Once at the airport you have a range of different airport transfer options to Playa Flamenca including private shuttle buses, taxis or Playa Flamenca car hire.

What To Do In Playa Flamenca

There are a range of water sports for which you can hire equipment at several locations along the beach to hiring a boat for a day trip to Tabarca island or just a fishing trip to horse riding and walking. To fill the gap a little you may want to do a bit of shopping. Playa Flamenca has a well known Saturday market easy to reach from your Playa Flamenca holiday rental villa or even Torrevieja to the Habanaras shopping centre.

Because the Playa Flamenca weather and climate is so favourable, Playa Flamenca has become a popular tourist destination for sun lovers enjoying approximately 325 sunny days each year.

A vacation to Playa Flamenca can appeal to every member of your family, or for all kinds of holiday makers. Playa Flamenca is suitable for summer or winter holidays as Playa Flamenca has one of the sunniest climates on The Costa Blanca.

Playa Flamenca is also appealing for those people that love to go on cultural holidays, or those that wish to hire a yacht, for those that wish to play golf or have a fun holiday with your family and children in the sun on the many blue flag beaches in the area. In other words Playa Flamenca is a dream destination as it has something for everyone!

For the lovers of ecological and environmental tourism, you may like to visit the lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja, where you can enjoy a mud bath, recommended by doctors around the world for its curative properties for a large number of rheumatic, dermatological, heart and respiratory complaints.

Playa Flamenca is a quiet residential area, non-commercialised, but near to all the required holiday facilities, i.e. blue-flag beaches, championship golf, tennis, water sports, aqua parks, and go-carting. Ten minutes walk from a large shopping complex, seven restaurants and five bars serving international cuisine. There are also a few sports bars and karaoke bars where you enjoy live acts and of course be a part of the entertainment.

Torrevieja, a 10 minutes drive away, is a beautiful Spanish town, boasting a marina, waterfront market, street entertainment, shops, numerous cafes, bistros, restaurants, bars, and a beautiful church square. The superb palm-lined promenade and harbour board-walk are the ideal place to go for that evening stroll. Activities to be enjoyed in Playa Flamenca include tennis, watersports, horse riding and fishing.

On the local front, market day in Playa Flamenca is on a Saturday where you can purchase anything from clothes, bags, shoes, fruits and vegetables as well as freshly cooked chickens, paellas and tortillas. The market is situated on the main road running through Playa Flamenca is very well visited and as it is of a very good size.

The Flamenca Beach commercial centre and Via Park are the main locations for bars, shops and restaurants. This lively area has a variety of restaurants serving cuisine from all corners of the globe as well as there being plenty of live entertainment in the many bars. For food shopping we recommend the Mercadona supermarket.

Playa Flamenca Golf

Rentable villas and apartments are centrally located for the three main championship golf courses, Golf Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor.

Playa Flamenca is every golfers Mediterranean dream, with 3 beautiful championship courses of international prestige, within a 10 minutes from Playa Flamenca. Facilities include : Club Hire; Caddie Car & Buggie Hire; Pro Shop; Driving Range; Putting Green; and Restaurant.

The fabulous Villamartin is a frequent venue for the Mediterranean Open. Campoamor golf, set amongst the palm and pine trees is a beauty to behold. Las Ramblas golf, another magnificent course, is a real test of golf. Within a 30 minutes drive, you can select from another 8 courses, each with its own unique design, including the world famous La Manga, and La Finca golf courses. All are challenging, but are most enjoyable to play.

On the historic side, the Orihuela region, with its many museums, churches, and historic buildings, is well worth a visit. The old part of the town of Orihuela was declared a historic-artistic and monumental area in 1969. There are many noble buildings, six of which are declared Cultural Heritage. Culture and history is also in abundance in the nearby towns of Murcia and Cartagena.

Accommodation And Where To Stay In Playa Flamenca

The local tourist office offers a service where they can help you find accommodation in Playa Flamenca. There are pensions, apart-hotels and hostels. There are lots of Playa Flamenca rentals with plenty of Playa Flamenca apartments for rent and Playa Flamenca villas for rent.

Although there are currently no recognised hotels in Playa Flamenca there is the La Zenia Hotel, a 4 star hotel in nearby La Zenia. Other possibilities for hotel accommodation close to Playa Flamenca is the Torrejoven Hotel at nearby Punta Prima or the Diamont Blue Aparthotel in Cabo Roig, both good choices, though the Diamont Blue would also be self-catering.

Why buy in this location on the Costa Blanca?

The Costa Blanca is an extremely large area so I am sure you will find something that fits the bill for you. However first you will need to narrow down your search area. The area that we happen to specialise in is called ‘’Orihuela Costa’’ and is predominantly a coastal area with 7km of white sandy beaches and three 18 hole golf courses all within a 5 minute drive. Now while I guess I am quite biased about this area as I have been living here for over 12 years myself. I still do find that it is one of the most well trodden paths for the ex-pat buyers as English is even more widely spoken than Spanish, so it is ideal if you are intending to re-locate or if you are looking at an investment property that you wish to rent out to an English speaking market.

Not only are there a good selection of properties here but there is also the infrastructure you would expect from an all year round holiday resort. I am sure you have heard the phrase: Location, Location, Location. Never more so than when you are buying in a foreign country did this phrase ring true. Now while this area is well known for being a bit more expensive than other further inland areas, what you may compromise on property size you do well and truly make up for in location. The most popular local areas are: Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Villamrtin, Cabo Roig, Punta Prima and Los Altos.

Hotels in the area

Moving to Playa Flamenca

If you are thinking of moving to Playa Flamenca, then you must read our expat interview with Rachel Bellamy of Smartsell below:

Rachel, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Playa Flamenca compared to other Costa Blanca towns?

Playa Flamenca is a modern coastal town with some lovely beaches, it is multi cultural. With the population coming from England, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Russia, and Ireland. English is widely spoken probably more so than Spanish. All the staff in the shops, banks, restaurants and hospital all speak English to a good standard. Which makes integration very easy. We have 2 airports that service this area. Alicante which is around 40 minutes by car from here and also Murcia airport which is only 20 minutes by car from here.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

The area is suited to all ages mostly being a flat landscape it is easy to walk around, there is a shopping complex with over 200 shops close by including a bowling alley and a casino. Plus we have 3 stunning beaches, a Saturday street market, a public sports centre with heated indoor pool, tennis courts and football pitches. Then we also have a go-kart track and a crazy golf park which are both popular with the younger generations.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

20% are Spanish the rest are northern Europeans Belgium, Dutch, Scandinavian, English, Russian – but all tend to use English as a common language.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

There are 3 stunning 18-hole golf courses in the area, some lovely beaches- La Zenia beach in particular has watersports in the summer months. Cycling is also popular as the area is quite flat.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

Well in La Zenia Boulevard you have an entire food court, restaurants from Argentinian steak houses, to Chinese buffet, or a pasta house with an ‘eat as much as you’ like policy. A bit further along then you have The Buddah Indian restaurant which is very well recommended and to be found on – tripadvisor. Another very nice restaurant is The Cellar Door down in the Flamenca beach commercial centre – again this one gets lots of good reviews. There are a number of very good bars locally most offer a low priced ‘menu del dia’ and then of an evening you find plenty of activity in the bars from Pool table, Darts league, singers and karaoke, quiz nights, bingo nights. Plus children and families are welcome with no curfew.

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

About 5 minutes from Playa Flamenca there is a ‘central salud’ which is the local doctors surgery. Visitors can use their E111 form for an appointment with a doctor. Then there are 2 very good dentist, Apple Dentist and Swed Dentist. Both give a very good dental service. As for shops there are many small commercial centers around but there is also the large commercial centre of Zenia Boulevars with over 200 shops and boutiques plus a number of large hypermarkets as well.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Playa Flamenca is very popular, but close by you also have- La Zenia, La Florida, Cabo Roig, Villamartin and Punta Prima, all of which offer a similar holiday experience to Playa Flamenca itself.

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

There a 2 local schools one in Playa Flamenca and one a few minutes away in Los Dolces, both of these are Spanish state schools but around 70 percent of the pupils are non-Spanish. If you intend your children to be bilingual, the state school can do this. If you would prefer an English curriculum, then there is the local International school at Villamartin which offers full UK education. I am told children are taught to GCSE qualifications.

Is crime an issue for expats?

As in most tourist areas you do get the odd bit of opportunist crime, mainly when holidaymakers let their guard down, but certainly no more than any other holiday destination. Best thing is to remember to keep your valuables close and be vigilant.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

We have seen a steady increase in property prices which have risen by around 10% in the last 12 months. The area is popular with Scandinavian buyers and the Norwegian Crown is very strong against the Euro at the moment. British buyers have always loved this area, but since Brexit the British buyers budgets have dropped slightly. With up to 300 days of sunshine a year, this area will always have an attraction from people from more Northern climates. It is a great time to invest in property in this area as prices are most definitely on the way up now.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

The real bargain are getting harder to find, but if you have a good agent you should be offered some of the best properties in the area. Some banks do offer repossessions but often they are in quite a poor state inside, so some negotiation on purchase price may be needed to bag yourself a bargain.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

Most of the urbanisations here are based on a similar theme. With a gated community of around 40-80 properties around a central community area with community pool and gardens. An average annual community fee would be around 360 Euro per year so basically about 1 Euro per day. Some of the bigger urbanizations may have a number of pools and the urbanizations by the golf course have much more community gardens. Therefore the annual charges for these can be 800-1,000 Euros per year.

How much are the typical property prices in Playa Flamenca for apartments, villas etc?

Apartments start at around 70,000 Euros, then you have townhouses from 110,000 and also Quad houses from 130,000 then the detached villas which are from around 180,000 and upwards depending on how big and how much garden you require.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Playa Flamenca or surrounding area?

Come along for a ‘’fact finding’’ weekend. This will give you time to see the local beaches, the shopping facilities, the properties on offer, the golf and sports facilities in the area. I’m sure just a few days here will help you to feel that this area has everything you need to settle in to life here. Once you’ve found your perfect property we can introduce you to an English-speaking Spanish lawyer who will be able to handle all the legal paper work when buying a property. We can also introduce you to a local ‘currency exchange’ company who will help you get the best deal when transferring your pounds into Euros.

i am a resident of la florida wich is just a short walk from playa flamenca, were it all happens, day & night till the early hours. children are more than welcome every were in bars every day with all entertainment free. one side of the street closes 1-00 & the abby on the other closes at 3-00 aprox which is the place to go in the early hour. there is a bus runs there-day time, but you can hire a car for 10 uros a day all in, if you ask about. ashort walk from there is la florida with emarld isles & its lovely pool & entertainment. via park 3 has more bars, food , chemist & entertainment, the same bus.also goes to the hospital. playa flemenca is not too fare from the saturday market & celtic isles,a must after the market, from there you can shop till you drop at la zenia or drop down to the beach to kool off. o yes, theres bingo every were. ken.
