Awesome! Our first trip was well beyond our expectations. It was only supposed to be one trip, but it was so great, we booked another, this time a Danube River cruise leaving from Budapest. We've only been on an Avalon cruise and have stayed with them only because we can't imagine anyone else doing it better. Thanks, Avalon, for a wonderful trip and we're looking forward to the next one this June.

Crosieurope had nice food, plenty of beer and wine, very clean boat - both inside and out. Staff were very nice and helpful, always cleaning windows, carpet, etc. The administration staff were a bit at times disorganised. Sometimes they would forget to give message in English after they delivered Message in French.

The program in the Emerald ship was magnificently planned and discussed. The local music during the cruise was so informative. Long live the music from the Netherlands and Germany through Austria and Slovakya to Hungary! Just for the music, dances and songs I will do the cruise again!

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

We had a generally good experience. Most new passengers board in Engelhartszell, but 17 passengers boarded the ship in Vienna. We boarded in Vienna and didn’t receive new passenger orientation, which includes basic ship, safety and excursion presentations. The crew was very friendly, although it was primarily a German language oriented cruise lines.

Not one time did someone say, "oh that is not my job." The accomodations were top class, the food excellent, loved the pool. Definately 5 stars.

Impressed by the work done to get us on board at a very late date. The trip itself was the usual wonderful Scenic Cruise. The two tour guides, Franz and Alec were outstanding and all the personnel on The Opal made the trip wonderful. The Hotels in Switzerland were all top notch. Our tours visiting Castles and Towns were as good as we remembered others from earlier tours. Our admiration and respect for Scenic remains very strong.

European River Cruises Reviews

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

AmaWaterways

Vibe : With 144-to-196 passengers, these European ships resemble well-decorated homes-away-from home . Cruises emphasize health and wellness, balanced by fine food and wine. The new AmaMagna , a double-wide boat with a Danube debut in May, offers more amenities and space—including a novel watersports platform (for riverboats). Fellow Passengers : Energetic social Americans, often wine buffs, ranging from 40-plus to Baby Boomers and beyond. Younger cruisers often book themed wine sails. Average Eight-Day Fare : $2,699 per person. Notable Inclusions : All meals, beer, and wine with onboard lunch and dinner; shore excursions; guided hiking and biking tours; bicycles; one-hour daily happy hour with beer, wine, and spirits pre-dinner; and Wi-Fi. Rivers : Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Main, Rhone, Seine, Garonne, Dordogne, Douro; and Dutch and Belgian waterways and canals. Cabins : Residential-ish staterooms typically run between 155 to 502 square feet. Most cabins sport Ama’s signature twin balconies, featuring both a French and outside veranda. Flat-screen TVs double as computers, and baths sport multi-jet showerheads. Eat and Drink : Count on seasonal, destination-driven menus with healthful bents, fine regional wines—even recipes on pillows at turndown. All cruisers enjoy one complimentary, six-course dinner with wine pairings at the haute Chef’s Table, prepared before passengers. Staying Fit : Devotees like the well-equipped gym, walking track, heated pool, and hydration station with infused detox and gemstone waters. A Wellness Host provides complimentary daily classes, like core strengthening and circuit training, as well as personal training for a fee. Shore Excursions : An Ama specialty: The line partners with Backroads, bringing biking, walking, and hiking tours to more than 120 sails this year and in 2020.

Crystal River Cruises

Vibe : Expect plush, all-suite accommodations serviced by attentive butlers, stellar cuisine, and abundant perks. Riverboats beautifully duplicate Crystal Ocean’s modern luxury style . Most feature walk-in closets and dual-vanity bathrooms. Modern tech accents include a bedside iPad with room controls. ETRO Italian toiletries, especially the body lotion, are swipe-worthy. Eat and Drink : Think Michelin star-style cuisine, particularly at on-site restaurant Waterside. The Bistro showcases morning specialty coffees and house-baked pastries, midday charcuterie, and later, wine and tapas. A Vintage Room extravaganza (a rare extra cost), paired with legendary wines, is extraordinary. Staying Fit : At the well-outfitted fitness center, personal training’s available. Take comp morning classes like yoga, plunge into the heated indoor pool. Off ship, go kayaking and canoeing, ride an e-bike. Later, unwind in the full-service spa. The fanciest, at 315 square feet, include an iPad, Nespresso machine, and some laundry service. Weather permitting, Emerald hosts a popular once-a-week sundeck lunch barbecue. 9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

travel guides europe river cruise

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

travel guides europe river cruise

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

travel guides europe river cruise

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

travel guides europe river cruise

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Why a river cruise.

Even if you are an avid ocean cruise enthusiast, there are plenty of reasons why a river cruise in Europe should be on your bucket list:

Intimate experience

River cruising can offer a more intimate and up-close experience with the destinations as smaller ships wind through picturesque landscapes and historic cities – accessing narrower waterways and docking in the heart of smaller ports that large ocean liners cannot visit. Guests explore more diverse destinations, including smaller, less-visited gems. The small ship experience also makes it easier to get to know fellow guests for those who enjoy socialising on board.

Cultural immersion

River cruises in Europe frequently include guided excursions to historical sites, museums, and local attractions, providing guests with a deeper understanding of the regions they visit. Onboard enrichment programs, such as lectures and cooking classes, further enhance the cultural experience. Europe's rivers are lined with historic cities and landmarks, making river cruises an excellent choice for history enthusiasts.

Relaxed pace

River cruises tend to have a more leisurely pace compared to ocean cruises, allowing travellers to unwind and discover more in every destination they visit. There's less emphasis on the rush to the next port of call and more time to spend exploring different regions.

Accessible ports

River cruise ships can navigate relatively shallow waters and pass through lochs, allowing them to dock directly in the heart of cities and towns. This accessibility means that passengers can easily disembark and explore destinations on foot, enhancing their experience.

Specialised itineraries

River cruise itineraries can be highly specialised with each sailing an ode to specific interests such as history, wine, art, and music. Travellers have a depth of choice and can select itineraries that align with their passion and interests.  The destination becomes the centre point of the itinerary compared to some large ocean ships that may feel like a destination on its own.

Ultimately, river cruises offer a distinct and immersive way to explore Europe and can be an excellent option for those looking for a more intimate and culturally rich journey.

Popular European River Cruise Lines

The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major highlight of the region. It's characterised by its steeply terraced hillsides covered in grapevines. The valley's unique soil conditions contribute to the production of some of the world's finest wines. Along its course, the Douro River passes through or near several historic cities and towns, including Porto in Portugal and Salamanca in Spain. The Moselle is another historically significant river flowing through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. It is also a tributary of the Rhine River. As it winds through vineyard-covered hills, it offers passengers breathtaking views of lush greenery, charming villages, and terraced vineyards.

The Moselle Valley is often considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe. The region's steep vineyard slopes and temperate climate contribute to the production of high-quality wines. Travellers can enjoy wine tastings at local wineries and learn about the winemaking process. Wine festivals are often held in the region from April to October so guests on board can join in the festivities.

The Moselle River flows past or near several historic towns and cities, each with its own unique charm. Trier in Germany, known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, is one of the oldest cities in the country. Bernkastel-Kues and Cochem are quintessential German towns with picturesque half-timbered houses and medieval architecture.

River cruises along the Moselle are a popular way to explore this region. These cruises often feature leisurely journeys through the valley, with stops at historic towns and opportunities for wine tasting and cultural experiences that are memorable and life-enriching.

  • Hats and sunglasses are crucial to protect yourself from the sun during excursions.
  • Swimmers are important for those who want to enjoy the ship’s pools and local waterways when docked at port.
  • Don't forget comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions, as well as formal attire for special onboard dinners.
  • A lightweight, waterproof jacket and an umbrella can come in handy.
  • Toiletries and prescription medications should be packed, as well as electrical converters and adapters to charge devices.

Top Tips for Europe River Cruises

Embarking on a Europe river cruise from Australia is a dream journey that promises unforgettable moments and cultural discoveries that are sure to remain with you for life. But here's a quick Europe river cruise guide and tips to keep in mind when making the long journey to Europe from any Australian city.

Book your flights and cruise early

Flying out of Australia in the European summer can be expensive, so get in early and book your flights to get the best savings. The same goes for your cruise. To get the cruise and itinerary you want, get in early and you will also likely benefit from some early bird savings. Discerning Traveller has a dedicated air department that can organise the perfect fly cruise package for you. Contact us today and we can organise flights to go along with your European river cruise for you.

Invest in packing cubes for additional convenience

Cruise cabins often have limited storage space. Packing cubes help you make the most of the available space by compressing your clothes and essentials. They are designed to fit snugly into your luggage, allowing you to bring more items without overloading your suitcase. Not only will you save room, but you’ll also be able to perhaps fit an extra souvenir or two.

Don’t try to see it all

Tempting as it may be, especially with a packed river cruise itinerary, try to take in the sights at a more relaxed pace to truly enjoy Europe’s quaint little towns and villages. Be mindful and think ahead when planning your trip and don’t physically exhaust yourself racing from one landmark to the next. Don’t forget – it’s still a holiday!

While most places have progressed to cards, cash still prevails in some places and might be the only accepted form of payment depending on where you go, especially in local markets and small shops. Also, consider that different countries might have different currencies besides the Euro. Be sure to review the countries you visit and try to exchange cash ahead of time.

Quiz your crew members for tips onshore

No better way to adventure like a local than from the eyes of people who’ve been there multiple times – the crew! Ask them where is the best place to eat, where to avoid, and their favourite landmarks and you won’t go wrong.

Choose the right season

Consider the time of year you want to travel. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather and longer daylight hours, while the holiday season can be magical with Christmas markets. Summer is often the best time to explore the full splendour of the European landscapes, but crowds are more substantial, and some popular destinations can be quite busy.

Participate in excursions

Take advantage of the included shore excursions. They provide a deeper understanding of the local culture and history. With local guides often leading the way, you have the best chance to truly dive into each port of call compared to doing your own free-form exploration. But keep in mind that river cruises follow a strict schedule, so be punctual to avoid missing the ship – especially if you decide to explore on your own.

Wake up early

The best way to avoid the crowds is to get up and out early. This is especially so for cities such as Venice, Paris, and Rome where it can be a little too crowded by 1pm. The morning in particular is quite lovely, particularly in coastal towns before the tourists wake up and start their own adventures.

Respect local customs

Some customs may be unique and different so it is worth researching a bit about the local customs of the places you are visiting so you can be more mindful, especially when visiting churches, temples, or other religious sites.

Whether you're interested in exploring historic towns, enjoying scenic vistas, or experiencing European culture, follow these tips for a memorable and enriching travel experience.

Rhine river cruise

Top 5 European river cruises

  • The Rhine Valley

Whether its hilltop towns in Provence or Gothic castles scattered along the Rhine, a European river cruise allows you to visit a wide range of storied cities and out-of-the-way villages in a relaxed fashion. No matter where you go, you can enjoy gourmet dining, indulgent spa treatments, and your choice of in-depth tours with experts.

Here, we’ve created a primer to river cruising in Europe, introducing the distinctive, wide-bottomed ships and their on-shore experiences. We’ve picked out five of our top routes, which take in everything from tulip fields beside Dutch waterways to the ancient vineyards along Portugal’s Douro River.

About the routes

We’ve spotlighted five of Europe’s greatest rivers for cruising. Each one works well as a standalone trip, but we think you’ll get even more from your experience if you combine them with an in-depth visit to the city or cities at the start or end of the cruise — you can use the itineraries we’ve suggested below as inspiration. Of course, your specialist will craft your trip just for you, choosing hotels and experiences that match your particular tastes.

Avignon, France

Waterways in Belgium & the Netherlands

  • Duration: 7 nights
  • Start & end point: Amsterdam
  • Countries: The Netherlands and Belgium

Each spring, the Netherlands  erupts in a riotous celebration of tulips and other spring flowers — from farm fields to botanical gardens, the country boasts millions of bulbs blooming in candy-bright shades of lipstick red, sunshine yellow, and vivid orange. If you’re planning your cruise between late March and early May, you’ll get to soak up the splendor of the blooms.

This cruise gives you a chance to explore the country’s well-known love of tulips, with (optional) visits to a family-run tulip farm and the Floralia flower show in Antwerp . The grand finale is a stop at the annual festivities in the prestigious Keukenhof gardens, where 7 million bulbs — including 800 varieties of tulips, not to mention dozens of daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses — draw visitors from around the globe every year.

The cruise begins and ends amid the scenic, shady canals of Amsterdam . Along the way, you’ll get a chance to admire Belgium’s  wealth of medieval architecture in Bruges , Middelburg, and Ghent , and admire the historic windmills at the village of Kinderdijk. In addition to the floral-themed stops, you can discover the timeless appeal of Delft pottery or indulge in a masterclass from a Belgian chocolatier.

Learn more: You can incorporate this cruise on any trip to Europe, like this ten-day itinerary suggestion   that includes time in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam

Germany & Luxembourg: the Rhine & the Moselle

  • Start & end point: Luxembourg and Nuremberg
  • Countries: Germany and Luxembourg

From the vineyard-lined shores of the Moselle to the castle-dotted bends of the Rhine, this cruise gives you a chance to explore the food, drink, and scenic landscapes of both Germany  and Luxembourg . Many of the experiences here allow you to acquaint yourself with the region’s cuisine and distinctive alcoholic beverages — you can sample smoked beer and traditional wurst in Bamberg, sip the renowned wines of the Rheingau region, or learn to bake a pretzel at a small local bakery. For a more active trip, you might opt for hikes through vineyards or up steep hills to explore local castles.

Along the way, you’ll visit villages like Bernkastel-Kues, Cochem, and Wertheim, which seem lifted from the pages of a storybook with their half-timbered houses painted in cheerful primary hues. You can also opt to visit the Niederwalddenkmal monument via a gondola with panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. Or, you might venture down the Romantic Road  to visit Rothenburg, Germany’s best-preserved walled town.

Learn more: This 13-day suggested trip  adds time in both Paris and Prague before and after your cruise, extending your exploration through the heart of Europe.

Luxembourg City

Germany & the Netherlands: the Rhine

  • Between: Geneva and Amsterdam
  • Countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland

It seems like there’s a castle around every curve of the Rhine — imposing Gothic confections of crenellated ramparts and pointed towers that loom over the river. Cruises along the Rhine let you admire the apparently endless parade from the water, and give you the chance to actually slip inside a few — for example, you can opt to take a guided tour of the stately interiors of Burg Lahneck in Germany.

In addition to castles, you’ll find medieval villages dotted along the banks — places you likely wouldn’t visit any other way. For example, you can stop at the Alsatian town of Strasbourg to visit the well-preserved 16th-century old town, packed with brightly painted half-timber buildings.

In Germany, the river is also known for its vineyards — you can enjoy a simple tasting in Rüdesheim am Rhein. Alternatively, join a cycle tour through Breisach or take a gondola ride to the Niederwalddenkmal monument, followed by a sampling of Riesling wines.

Learn more: This cruise pairs well with an in-depth exploration of Amsterdam, which is included in this 12-day suggested itinerary .

Rheinstein Castle, River Rhine, Germany

France: the Rhône

  • Start & end point: Lyon to Arles
  • Countries: France

Gentle hills drenched in sunshine, lavender fields that hum with bees, storied vineyards, and fragrant truffles — a Provence  cruise between Lyon  and Arles  lets you fully indulge your senses. The route highlights why this region’s sumptuous character has inspired poets, painters, chefs, vintners, and even popes since the Roman era.

The on-shore tours here include a truffle hunt through the sunny countryside, following a trained truffle-sniffing dog. You could choose a vineyard tour and tasting in the Beaujolais region, known for its gamay grapes and lighthearted approach to winemaking. Or, enjoy a red-wine-and-chocolate tasting at Le Château de Tournon.

With narrow medieval streets paved in honey-gold stones, Arles inspired Vincent Van Gogh when painting his Café Terrace at Night , which has made the French city a popular destination for art lovers. You can take a walking tour with an art historian to learn more about the painter’s time here and visit a Van Gogh-themed gallery.

Arguably the climax of the cruise is a stop in Avignon , home to the Palais des Papes, or papal palace. A tour of this sprawling complex of turrets, fortifications, and battlements will give you a glimpse into the Pope’s power in 14th-century Europe.

Learn more: Get inspired with our 13-day suggested trip , which includes this cruise as well as time in Paris, Versailles, and Cannes.

Lyon, France

Portugal & Spain: the Douro

  • Start & end point: Porto & Vega de Terrón
  • Countries: Portugal and Spain

A cruise down the Douro  in Portugal and Spain is a chance to explore one of the world’s oldest designated wine regions, known for both its vistas and its vineyards. The steep sides of the valley are lined with hand-carved terraces where vintners have been growing grapes for more than a millennium — we think the best way to enjoy the views of the gently undulating terraces is from the river.

The route includes several chances to visit local quintas, a Portuguese word for wine estates. They dot the riverside and you’ll be able to stop at several to try traditional cuisine as well as sample the fortified port wine that the region is known for. You can also stop for another tasting in the city that gave the wine its name — Porto .

Looking beyond food and wine, you can also choose to take guided tours of small local villages as well as the city of Salamanca , a Spanish UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Other options include guided hikes and cycling tours, and a chance to explore the blue-and-white-tiled interior of the Palácio Anadia, a Baroque palace from the 18th century.

Learn more: A Douro cruise is included in this 13-day suggested itinerary , which also gives you time to explore Lisbon and Madrid.

Salamanca, Spain

About the ships

These are not the ocean-going liners that many people think of when they hear ‘cruise ship’. They’re much smaller, usually only holding about 150 passengers, creating a more intimate trip. The keels are flat and wide — almost barge-like — and the low, close-to-the-water profile means you’ll have a smooth voyage.

We’ve chosen ships with spacious staterooms that have floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as (usually) both a French balcony and an outdoor balcony. The sophisticated decor, attentive service, and luxe amenities are a match for most elegant hotels in Europe, and usually of a much higher standard than you’d find if you wanted to spend the night in many of the villages en route.

Dining here is a gourmet affair, with both local and international menus, and a generous wine cellar. You can sit down to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as enjoy wine and beer with meals and tapas between eating times — all included as part of your package.

Also included is a wide menu of activities available at each stop. You can go for guided hikes, while a fleet of bicycles onboard means you can explore like the locals do, with or without a guide. Gourmets can opt for a wine tasting, market tour, cooking class, or beer-and-bratwurst feast. And, of course, there are guided walking tours.

In the evenings, as you travel effortlessly between villages, castles, and vineyards, you can take advantage of your ship’s spa for treatments, attend the nightly entertainment, or simply enjoy a cocktail on the sun deck as you admire the countryside scrolling past you.

Guide to European river cruising

So you’ve planned your dream cruise to Europe to experience some of the most iconic cities on the planet. River cruising is hot right now and new routes and cruise lines are opening up each year. It’s an excellent way to travel from one destination to another without the hassle of having to pack and repack each day you move. Plus there are few better rooms in the city; imagine having your own hotel room directly on the waterfront in cities such as Amsterdam ,  Budapest , or Vienna . It’s no wonder so many people are choosing river cruises as their transportation of choice to explore Europe.

We had the recent opportunity to try a Viking River Cruise . As novice cruisers ourselves, we learned what it means to take charge of your own European river cruise vacation. The biggest lesson: You are free to see the sights the way you want and do the things you want to do. We learned that the luxury of cruising is that you are free to make your own choices and venture out on your own. If you want to stay with the crowd, there are tours and guides to lead you through every step of your vacation. The beauty is that you have a choice!

Here are some tips we learned to make the most of river cruising in Europe.

Plan your own tours and shore excursions

Before the cruise begins, take a good look at your itinerary to see where you are stopping and how long you will be at each port. Make a list of the top sights you want to explore, and how long it might take to see everything. Instead of being stuck with the crowd from the cruise, join a local tour. You can book several tours online that will be able to take you off the beaten path. Better yet, get a map and guide yourself. You’ll be able to duck into quiet cafés or stumble upon lesser-known sights. Just because you are traveling by cruise, doesn’t mean you can’t experience your day on land like a local.

travel guides europe river cruise

Use public transit or hire taxis

We made the mistake of sitting on the tour bus to take us into town from the ship. It wasted a lot of time, as it toured areas we weren’t interested in seeing. If we had hired a taxi, we could have gone directly to the sights we wanted to see and enjoyed more time in town (instead of on the sitting on bus). Public transit also is an excellent choice and an affordable way to get around. In Vienna, our ship was just a short walk from the metro, which took us right downtown for just a couple of Euros.

Dine off ship

It can be difficult to justify dining in town when you know that your meal is already included on the ship, but food—especially in Europe—is what travel is about. When eating the local cuisine or dining in a local tavern, you’ll be immersed in the culture and feel like you truly are experiencing Europe.

If you really want to feel like a local, visit one of the markets and buy some cheese, meat, and wine to enjoy a picnic in the park or on the waterfront. Nothing feels more decadent and European than people-watching while enjoying the outdoors. If you don’t want to dine off ship, make sure to at least sit on your ship’s terrace and have a local aperitif with some appetizers or finger foods. You’ll remember that moment for years to come.

Viewfinder Tip: Make sure to have Euros on hand at all times, as it’s much easier to get around European cities with cash than credit.

Ask questions

The staff on the river cruise is there to help you, so make sure to ask questions about your port of call. Ask what the organized tour is like and what you will be seeing on it. Ask for suggestions on what is not to be missed. After you have all of the answers you seek, make informed decisions on what you should do. When in Vienna, we made the mistake of booking the concert offered through the ship. The audience at the concert ended up being comprised of cruise passengers from a bunch of different lines, coming together to listen to musicians in an empty hall. While the musicians were talented and entertaining, we would have preferred to see an orchestra in a different venue. If we had asked questions about the event, we would have known that it wasn’t for us, and we could have booked another concert at the venue of our choice instead.

There are many advantages to taking a river cruise through Europe instead of traveling by train or bus. River cruises provide an excellent opportunity to bundle meals and transportation. They also are great ways to take the stress out of getting from one city to the next. Once you know what to expect, a European river cruise can be the trip through Europe about which you always have dreamed.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore charming cities, visit world-renowned museums, indulge in local culinary delights, and witness the rich history and architecture of Europe up close.

With a plethora of cruise lines and itineraries to choose from, finding the best European river cruise to suit your preferences can be overwhelming. But fear not! In this article, we will guide you through some of the top European river cruises, highlighting their key features and attractions, to help you make an informed choice and have an unforgettable journey.

Danube River Cruises

A Danube River cruise is a perfect way to explore the heart of Europe, passing through 10 countries and immersing yourself in the rich history and stunning landscapes along the way. From the vibrant city of Budapest to the romantic streets of Vienna, and from the ancient charm of Salzburg to the architectural splendors of Prague, a Danube River cruise offers a diverse range of experiences.

One of the most popular itineraries is the “Classic Danube” cruise, which typically starts in Budapest and ends in Passau or Nuremberg. The best river cruises blend refined onboard accommodations with exciting itineraries along some of the world’s most memorable waterways.

travel guides europe river cruise

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite river cruise lines.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

Find the full list of the best river cruise lines — and more on what sets Viking apart — below.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness. "Having traveled on seven Viking longships that are virtually indistinguishable from one another, I believe it's the consistency that makes Viking one of our favorite ways to travel," said one reader. The longships are light-filled floating boutique hotels with a Scandinavian-design aesthetic, indoor and outdoor dining, and herb gardens up on top. Viking's carefully crafted itineraries and "good value" also received praise from readers. "Met wonderful new friends. Absolutely outstanding service and terrific food," said one fan.

European Christmas markets are not just shopping destinations; they are a vibrant tapestry of traditions and festivities, each offering a unique glimpse into the heart of Europe’s cultural heritage. As you sail from one city to another on your river cruise, you’ll discover that each market has its own character, steeped in the local customs and history of its region.

European Christmas Markets

A Journey Through Time-Honored Traditions

In these markets, centuries-old traditions come alive. Imagine strolling through rows of wooden stalls, each brimming with handcrafted toys, ornaments, and gifts. The air is filled with the aroma of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and freshly baked gingerbread. In cities like Nuremberg , Strasbourg , and Vienna , these markets are not just a modern-day affair but a continuation of a legacy that dates back hundreds of years. They are places where time slows down, allowing you to savor the joy and peace of the holiday season.

European Christmas Markets

Festive Delights and Culinary Wonders

Beyond the crafts and gifts, European Christmas markets are a haven for food lovers. Each market offers a plethora of culinary delights, from hearty sausages and pretzels in Germany to sweet treats like Belgian waffles and French pastries . It’s an opportunity to indulge in a wide array of festive foods and drinks, each telling a story of the region’s culinary traditions. As you hop from one market to another, you’ll find that tasting these delicacies is as much a part of the Christmas market experience as the shopping and sightseeing.

Ultimately, the Christmas markets of Europe offer more than just a festive shopping experience; they are a celebration of history, culture, and culinary arts. They are where the spirit of Christmas is not just seen but felt, making them an essential part of any European river cruise during the holiday season. Each market visit enriches your journey, leaving you with memories that are as delightful and varied as the markets themselves.

European river cruises offer an authentic taste of local culture through their street food. As you wander through bustling Christmas markets or quaint town squares, indulge in a variety of street foods that are as diverse as the regions themselves. Sample bratwurst in Germany , savor waffles in Belgium , or enjoy a warm, flaky strudel in Austria . Each bite is a discovery of traditional recipes passed down through generations, offering a genuine taste of the local life.

Fine Dining: Gourmet Experiences Onboard and Ashore

Beyond the charm of street food, European river cruises are renowned for their exquisite fine dining experiences. Onboard, chefs prepare gourmet dishes that reflect the culinary heritage of the regions you traverse. Ashore, opportunities abound to dine in Michelin-starred restaurants , where the art of cuisine is celebrated with every meticulously crafted dish. It’s a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, creating unforgettable dining experiences.

In essence, the culinary journey on a European river cruise is as integral to the experience as the destinations themselves. Whether it’s the simple joy of biting into a freshly baked pastry from a street vendor or the refined elegance of a gourmet meal aboard your cruise, each culinary encounter is a celebration of the rich tapestry of European flavors. Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

austria, vienna, hofburg, michaelplatz

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Best Times for European River Cruises: A Guide

Best Times for European River Cruises: A Guide

European river cruises offer a window into the continent's soul, revealing its historical depth, cultural richness, and natural beauty. However, the experience can vary dramatically depending on the season. This guide delves into the nuances of the primary river cruise season and the unique charms of off-season voyages, helping you decide when to set sail on your European adventure.

The Prime Time: Spring and Autumn Revelations

The primary River Cruise season in Europe stretches from late spring to early autumn, with May through September offering optimal weather conditions, longer daylight hours, and a full bloom of activities. Each season has its distinct allure, drawing travelers into the heart of Europe's bustling life.

Spring (March to May) breathes new life into the landscape, with blooming flowers and mild temperatures creating an ideal backdrop for exploration. The Dutch tulip season, best experienced in April, transforms the Netherlands into a vibrant tapestry of colors, making it a highlight of Rhine and Dutch waterways cruises.

Autumn (September to November) is a time of harvest, with the countryside awash in golden hues and the air filled with the scent of ripe grapes and fall festivals. Wine regions along the Rhine and Douro rivers are particularly enchanting, offering tastings and vineyard Tours that connect travelers to the local culture and cuisine.

The Off-Season: Winter’s Enchantment

While many might overlook the colder months for cruising, winter (December to February) presents an entirely different facet of Europe , shrouded in festive lights and Christmas markets. The off-season offers the allure of fewer crowds, providing a more intimate experience of Europe’s historic towns and majestic cities.

Christmas Market Cruises are a highlight of the winter season, especially along the Danube and Rhine, where traditional markets light up historic squares with artisanal crafts, local delicacies, and the festive spirit. Cities like Vienna, Budapest, and Cologne become winter wonderlands, offering a cozy and magical holiday experience.

Summer: The Vibrant Pulse of Europe

Summer (June to August) is peak season for river cruises for a reason. The warm weather and vibrant cultural festivals make it a favorite among travelers. However, it’s also the busiest time, with popular destinations bustling with tourists. For those seeking to immerse themselves in Europe’s lively summer atmosphere, complete with open-air concerts, art festivals, and late-night dining along the waterfronts, summer is the time to cruise. Yet, be prepared for higher prices and book well in advance to secure your spot.

Off-Peak Perks: Discovering Europe’s Quiet Charm

Cruising in the off-season, particularly in late autumn and early winter, offers unique advantages beyond the festive allure of Christmas markets. You'll encounter fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of destinations. Additionally, the cooler weather is ideal for those who prefer crisp, invigorating air over the summer heat. Off-peak cruises also tend to be more budget-friendly, with lower prices and excellent deals on offer.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right time for a European River Cruise depends on what you seek from your journey. Whether it’s the vibrant life of summer, the transformative beauty of spring and autumn, or the festive enchantment of winter, each season offers a unique perspective on Europe’s endless charm. Beyond the weather, consider the type of experience you wish to have — from bustling markets and cultural festivals to serene landscapes and intimate local encounters. No matter when you choose to embark, a European river cruise is a journey that transcends the ordinary, offering insights and experiences that linger long after you’ve returned to shore.

Everything you need to know before booking a European river cruise

European river cruises offer year-round adventures, from autumn hues along the Douro River to Christmas markets in winter.

If you’re thinking of going on a European river cruise, here’s everything you need to know about your first river sailing, writes Tiana Templeman.

Choosing the right river

European river cruises are available year-round, from sailings that take in the autumn colours along the Douro River in Portugal to Christmas market cruises during winter, tulip cruises in the Netherlands in spring, and summer sailings along the Rhine, Danube and other popular rivers.

If you’re finding it hard to know where to start when it comes to choosing the best river for your first cruise, it can be helpful to think about what you enjoy most and choose your river cruise itinerary accordingly. For example, the Danube is widely regarded as one of the most scenic river sailings in Europe; or you could indulge your love of food and wine along the Seine in France.

An Avalon Waterways river cruise sailing on the Rhone. Photo / Globus

Keep an open mind

No matter how carefully you choose your itinerary, there will almost certainly be a few things on it that don’t particularly interest you. But it pays to keep an open mind. As someone who’s never been interested in war history, the prospect of touring Normandy’s World War II sites didn’t thrill me. However, learning about what happened at Omaha Beach and walking through the thousands of crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery was one of the most poignant and memorable moments of my trip.

When to book

While it’s possible to cruise year-round in Europe, choose your sailing date with care, as itineraries that are early or late in the season may be impacted by high or low river levels. If this happens, you could end up being bussed between ports instead of sailing. While it’s impossible to accurately predict river levels in advance, a mid or shoulder-season sailing is more likely to be hassle-free.

The Danube is renowned for scenic beauty, while the Seine indulges food and wine lovers on river cruises.

Choosing your cabin

No matter what line you sail on, river cruise cabins tend to be smaller than those you’ll find on ocean-going ships. If having more room to move is important to you, you may want to book a slightly higher cabin category with a larger floor area.

If you’re travelling on a tight budget, opting for a cabin with a window instead of a balcony is an easy way to save money. While the panoramic views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in a river ship balcony cabin are lovely, you’ll probably spend most of your time out and about in port or chatting with other travellers.

What to pack

The standard of dress on river ships tends to be more relaxed, even when you’re sailing with the same cruise line. For example, on my Viking River sailing in Portugal, most of the gents wore polo shirts to dinner, but long-sleeved collared shirts and dressy slacks were the norm on my Viking Ocean cruise.

As river cruise itineraries can involve long days of touring, pack comfortable clothes you can layer, a pair of worn-in walking shoes that can handle cobblestones, and wet weather gear. If your ship has a plunge or spa pool on the top deck, don’t forget your swimmers.

Booking excursions

With so many excursions included in your river cruise fare, there’s no chance of getting bored on a river cruise. Work on your fitness before your trip so you can make the most of your days in port, and pre-book any “must-do” excursions as soon as bookings open as these can fill up fast. Also, don’t rule out the extra for-a-fee excursions, as these often cater to special interests.

It’s okay to go your own way

One important thing to understand about river cruising is you don’t have to do every activity just because it’s included in your programme. Opting out can be a great way to balance independence verus group interaction and have the kind of European holiday that’s right for you.

For example, if you’re an art lover and want to spend a full day exploring the Louvre, the ship’s one-hour walking tour will be a disappointment, no matter how great it is. Sometimes it’s smarter to book an independent tour or go as you please for the day.

Interacting with your guides

Your cruise director is an expert on your itinerary and the areas you’ll visit, so don’t be shy about asking questions when you’re aboard. Also, take advantage of the cruise tour guides in each destination. They’re local experts and the perfect people to ask where the best lunch spot is, how to find shops with locally-made souvenirs, or where to hang out with the locals.

Allow for some downtime

While it’s natural to want to take advantage of the included activities to get the best value from your river cruise, it can be a mistake to book up every minute of each day with excursions. Being able to spend time relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the river from the top deck is one of the joys of river cruising, whether you’re in port or sailing along one of Europe’s beautiful rivers.

6 words you never want to hear before a cruise

“I can honestly say I’ve never seen a more beautiful city.”

It’s a big call, but it’s just one of the exclamations from the stars of Channel 9 reality show Travel Guides as they cruised along Europe’s Danube River.

One of the world’s hottest emerging travel trends, river cruising is changing the way Aussies experience Europe — and helping put lesser-visited destinations, such as Budapest, firmly on the map for travellers.

The latest Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report names river cruising as one of the biggest emerging trends, with Central-Eastern European rivers including the Danube the most popular destination.

14 THINGS YOU’VE BEEN GETTING WRONG IN EUROPE

9 MOST UNDERRATED CITIES IN EUROPE

CITY GUIDE: 48 HOURS IN BUDAPEST

Arriving at Budapest is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.

Travel Guides’ real-life reviewers boarded the APT ship AmaReina to find out what all the fuss was about.

Their discoveries? Butler service, fine dining and more spectacular scenery than your eyes can take in.

If that sounds like your kind of travel, APT’s 15-day Danube cruises are priced from $6995 including flights, meals and tours.

Here are 14 of the Travel Guides’ top tips for first-time river cruisers:

1. IT’S NOT JUST FOR RETIREES

The cruise doesn’t have to be for the old ducks. Any age can go and have a good time.

— Bargain hunting Fren family

I think we three brought the average age down quite a bit!

— Target boys Kev, Dorian and Teng

2. YOU WON’T GET SEASICK

The most surprising thing about a river cruise is how smooth sailing it is. It’s not rough and sometimes you don’t even feel like you’re moving.

3. YOU WON’T BE SLUMMING IT

My expectations about a river cruise were quite low, because I didn’t know how they could condense the trappings that you have on a big ship into a small ship. We could not believe the size of the cabin … and it had a butler.

— Travel snobs Kevin and Janetta

4. WHAT TO PACK ...

Wear a kaftan all of the time. Then you don’t know how much weight you are putting on. The food is amazing and you just can’t stop eating.

5. AND WHAT NOT TO BRING

Leave your calorie conscious minds behind when going on a river cruise!

— Newlyweds Deepesh and Sage

6. ANY TIME’S GOOD FOR A BEER

I think Germany is the only place that I’ve ever seen people have breakfast beers at 10 in the morning … Back home we call that alcoholism. In Germany, it’s just culture.

7. BE PREPARED FOR LATE NIGHTS

You would think (because of the older demographic) everyone would be in bed by 6 but they party longer and harder than most of the young people I know — into the AM.

8. YOUR EYES WILL BE ON OVERLOAD

The highlight was all the amazing scenery you would wake up to every day. Although we have been to Europe before seeing the mountains on either side as you cruise along the river was spectacular.

The view from the ship of the beautiful mountains and little towns was pretty breathtaking.

— Cowgirl twins Stack and Mel

Durnstein in Austria: “Probably the prettiest place I’ve ever been,” says Travel Snob Kevin.

9. SWITCH OFF YOUR PHONE

Enjoy the slower pace. Turn off your phone, grab a drink and sit by the deck and just enjoy your life.

10. MAKE THE MOST OF THE BUFFET

Top tip for a first time river cruiser would be always get to the dinner buffet early so you can get the seat next to the food.

11. THERE’S HEAPS TO DO

Get involved in the activities, it’s a whole lot more than just a boat cruise.

Enjoy the food, the views, but most of all the amazing range of activities on offer. There are so many things to do and see (included tours/activities), and all you have to do is follow your tour leader.

12. DON’T MISS SALZBURG

Our best attraction was re-creating the sound of music experience in Salzburg by taking one of the world’s greatest train rides — the Majestic Imperator.

Definitely do The Sound of Music tour — you’ll be singing and dancing to “do-re-me” all day.

13. VISIT EUROPE’S APRICOT CAPITAL

The most surprising place we visited on the river cruise was a small town called Durnstein. It’s famous for apricots and it’s such a cute little town and a great tourist attraction.

Durnstein was probably the prettiest place I’ve ever been. The beauty was really retina-detaching.

14. TAKE THE PLUNGE IN BUDAPEST

Best attraction we visited on the trip would have to be the famous bathhouses in Budapest — feels good to see so much PDA.

The Szechenyi Thermal Baths in Budapest.
