The act of going to another place (often for a short period of time) and returning.

Use the verbs “take” and “go on” with trip .

• A round-trip ticket is a ticket for going and coming back.
• A one-way ticket is only for going.

Travel (v.)

Going to another place (in general).

• I really like to travel.
• He travels frequently for work.
• My sister is currently  traveling through South America.

Travel (n.) can be used to describe the act of traveling in general:

• Travel in that region of the country is dangerous.
• World travel gives you a new perspective.

Incorrect uses of travel :

• I bought this shirt on my  travel  to Thailand. I bought this shirt on my  trip  to Thailand.
• I’m planning a travel to the U.S. next year. I’m planning to travel to the U.S. next year. I’m planning a trip to the U.S. next year.

Journey (n.)

One piece of travel (going from one place to another) – usually a long distance.

• The journey takes 3 hours by plane or 28 hours by bus.
• He made the 200-mile journey by bike.

We can also use journey in a more “metaphorical” way to talk about progress in life:

VOCABULARY: Travel, Journey or Trip? What's the difference?

To travel  is, of course, a verb but not normally a noun unless it is in a literary context e.g.  Gulliver’s Travels  (a book by Jonathan Swift), or a long, extensive tour. 

In everyday English, we would refer to  travelling  by saying  a journey , or  a trip , the difference being that  a trip  talks of the whole process of going, doing what you do, and then returning. 

A journey  is used more to refer to the journey itself, although often there is little difference. Compare the following:  ‘The journey was rotten. The fat man who sat next to me snored all the time.’ ‘The trip was great, we managed to do everything that we had intended.’   

To journey  is an archaic verb not used now.  To trip  exists but it has a completely different meaning; ‘to fall over an object’; ‘He tripped  over the step and spilt all the drinks.’ 

To voyage  only refers to a long journey made at sea.

The words travel , journey , trip and voyage can easily be confused by learners of English.

I suppose it’s a good time of year to look at these words, as the spring and summer holiday seasons will soon be starting for many people.

Travel (noun)

The noun travel is a general word, meaning to move from place to place, usually over long distances.

We can say: air travel , food and travel , space travel , business travel , a travel agency .

• Air travel is getting more expensive.
• The magazine is a food and travel guide.

We can also say travels , which is a plural noun:

• Where did you go on your travels?
• Jack Kerouac wrote many books about his travels.

Travel is also a verb:

• I travel 20 km to work every day.

Journey (noun) 

A journey means moving from one place to another, especially in a vehicle. It is a single piece of travel. A journey can also be a regular thing.

Here is an example. Let’s say we go from London to Leeds then back again. That is two journeys (London to Leeds is the first journey, Leeds to London is the second journey).

We can say: a bus journey , a train journey , the journey to school , my journey to work .

Be careful with the plural: journeys NOT journies .

• How long does your journey to work take?
• Did you have a good journey?
• Did you have a good travel?

Trip (noun)

A trip describes the whole process of going somewhere and coming back. (It is more than one journey.)

Once again, let’s go from London to Leeds then back again. As I said above, that is  two journeys, but it is one trip.

Some examples: a day trip , a round trip , a round-the-world trip, a boat trip and a business trip . We say go on a trip .

• We went on a three-week trip to Scotland.
• He’s gone on a business trip to Germany.
• Let’s go on a trip to the mountains this summer!
• The trip there took three hours. The journey there took three hours.

Voyage (noun)

Voyages are less common nowadays. A voyage is a very long trip, usually at sea or in space:

• At the age of twenty-three, Sir Francis Drake made his first voyage to the New World.
• A voyage around the world often took four or five years.

The French Bon voyage! translates into English as Have a good trip! or Have a good journey!

A tour is when we visit several different places on a long trip and is usually for pleasure. A tour can also be an official visit to inspect a place, e.g. They gave the Prime Minister a tour of the new factory.

Excuse me, I put the question in Spanish without realising where you could be located. I put it again in English,excuse me.

I learnt that the correct sentence would be: ‘TRAVELLING is much faster and cheaper..’ but in the site here the answer that appear as correct is ‘TRAVEL is much faster and cheaper..’

Could you please be so kind to confirm me if it is a mistake of the system or if I was wrong and in fact in this case is more correct to say travel than travelling?

Blanca, It’s also possible to say Travelling is much faster and cheaper . The reason travelling was not given as an option in the multiple choice quiz is that we are looking at the differences between the nouns journey, trip and travel here. I see that this may be a bit confusing, so I have changed the last question in the exercise to air travel .

Now you will! The words travel, journey, and trip can easily be confused by learners of English. I suppose it’s a good time of year to look at these words! Travel (noun) The noun travel is a general word, meaning to move from place to place, usually over long distances. We can say: air travel, food and travel, space travel, business travel, a travel agency.

• Air travel is getting more expensive.
• The magazine is a food and travel guide.

We can also say  travels , which is a plural noun:

• Where did you go on your travels?
• Jack Kerouac wrote many books about his travels.

Travel is also a verb:

• I travel 20 km to work every day.

Journey (noun)  A journey means moving from one place to another, especially in a vehicle. It is a  single piece  of travel. A journey can also be a regular thing. Here is an example. Let’s say we go from London to Leeds then back again. That is  two  journeys (London to Leeds is the first journey, Leeds to London is the second journey). We can say: a bus journey, a train journey, the journey to school, my journey to work. Be careful with the plural: journeys NOT .

• How long does your journey to work take?
• Did you have a good journey?

Trip (noun) A trip describes the whole process of going somewhere and coming back. (It is more than one journey.) Once again, let’s go from London to Leeds then back again. As I said above, that is  two  journeys, but it is  one  trip. Some examples: a day trip, a round trip, a round-the-world trip, a boat trip and a business trip. We say go on a trip.

• We went on a three-week trip to Scotland.
• He’s gone on a business trip to Germany.
• Let’s go on a trip to the mountains this summer!
•  The journey there took three hours.

What is the difference between Travel and Trip?

These two words frequently confuse learners of English.

A quick explanation that is valid for most situations is the following:

Travel – a verb (the action) Trip – a noun

Susan’s husband isn’t in town at the moment; he is on a business trip . He travels to many different countries. Susan met her husband on a trip to the Bahamas.

Travel – to go from one place to another Trip – a journey that is often for a short period of time.

NOTE: There are some exceptions to the general rule above.

Travel can also be a noun when it refers to the act of traveling.

• Travel is difficult in that part of the country since there are no paved roads.
• Travel broadens your mind.

Sometimes Travel appears in plural form and in that case is normally preceded by a possessive adjective (my travels, his travels etc.)

• She has had many adventures in her travels .
• I have never seen any as strange as that in all of my travels .

Trip can also be a verb though it has a completely different meaning. To Trip – to accidentally stumble and almost fall while walking or running, usually after catching your foot on something.

• He didn’t see the cat and he tripped up.

Trip vs. Journey

A trip usually refers to traveling to a place and returning back to where you started. A journey usually implies traveling from one place to another (not necessarily returning to where you started). It sometimes refers to the length of time taken to go from one place to another.

• They went on a journey through South America that lasted 6 months.
• It is a three-day journey by train.

Some more uses of the word Trip

A day trip usually refers to a tourist activity that occupies your entire day. A business trip is when you travel for business reasons. A round trip means to travel somewhere and return to place of original, there and back (= a return trip)

Sono tre vocaboli spesso confusi tra di loro e usati in modo erroneo. Cerchiamo di capire quali sono le differenze principali tra di loro in modo da poterli usare correttamente.

Journey è principalmente un sostantivo. Viene usato come verbo poco e quasi esclusivamente nella lingua scritta. Come sostantivo si riferisce ad un specifico tragitto singolo, a senso unico, e mette l’enfasi proprio sul percorso stesso piuttosto che sulla meta. Spesso viene usato con riferimento a viaggi lunghi e/o ardui, oppure per enfatizzare la durata (tempo) o la lunghezza (distanza) del viaggio. Vediamo degli esempi tipici facendo attenzione ai verbi e agli avverbi che vengono spesso abbinati a journey :

• Did you have a good journey ?
• Hai fatto un buon viaggio?
• The journey back was terrible.
• Il viaggio di ritorno è stato terribile.
• It was the start of a long journey .

► Esempio di journey come verbo: (da sostituire con travel nella lingua parlata)

• They journeyed across the desert until they came to the sea.
• Hanno viaggiato attraverso il deserto finché non hanno raggiunto il mare.

Anche trip è fondamentalmente un sostantivo , almeno per quanto riguarda il contesto sotto esame, solo che in questo caso ci interessa tutto il viaggio compreso il soggiorno. In un certo senso potremo dire che è più vicino all’idea di escursione, gita, soggiorno, vacanza, viaggio con uno scopo specifico . Di solito si tratta di un viaggio che non sia di lunga durata. Vediamo degli esempi tipici facendo attenzione ai verbi e agli avverbi che vengono spesso abbinati a trip :

• We had a lovely trip to Brighton yesterday.
• Abbiamo fatto una bella gita a Brighton ieri.
• Our trip to New York was a total disaster.

Travel , invece, è usato quasi esclusivamente come verbo e solo occasionalmente come sostantivo. L’errore più comune è quello di usare travel come sostantivo invece di journey oppure trip . Esistono, però, numerosi sostantivi composti basati sulla parola travel che vedremo in seguito. Prima vediamo degli esempi tipici del verbo travel in uso:

• How do you travel to work?
• Come vai al lavoro?
• Bob travels to Spain about three times a year.
• Bob va in Spagna circa tre volte all’anno.
• We’ re travelling by plane to London and then by train to Brighton.
• Andremo a Londra con l’aereo e poi col treno a Brighton.

• Porto una borsa sola. Preferisco viaggiare leggero.

• Travel sickness = nausea causato dal mezzo di trasporto
• Travel time = tempo di tragitto

N.B. Mentre journey e trip possono essere usati indiscriminatemente a volte, una differenza c’è, come illustra questo esempio:

• The trip went very well, but the return journey was a disaster.
• Il viaggio (completo) è andato molto bene, ma il viaggio (tragitto) di ritorno è stato un disastro.

Tips for Buying a Travel Journal

Consider your needs.

Are you going on a road trip? Backcountry hiking? On a month-long ship journey across the ocean? Consider where you’re going and for how long when picking a journal. If you’re going to be in some extreme weather, you might want to pick a journal that has some weather protection. Short on suitcase space? Or maybe you’re only bringing minimal gear? Consider a pocket-sized journal to maximize precious packing room.

Pick the right page format and style

Be sure to look at what types of pages come with your journal, and if it is refillable, what types of page refills are available. If you’re used to writing on lined paper, you’ll want to make sure your journal has that. But if you’re looking for some blank pages so you can sketch or add photos, make sure the journal includes them, too.

There is no right or wrong way to journal. Simply start and just let the words flow onto the pages. Talk about what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, who you're traveling with, the itinerary, what you ate, etc. If you’re not quite sure how to journal, choose a journal with prompts that will help you get started.

A bullet journal is more for to-do lists, scheduling, organizing, and jotting down ideas. Travel, trip y journey traducido al castellano es “viaje”, lo que se define como “trayecto de una parte a otra”. Eso es así en su traducción castellana. Pero en inglés hay pequeños matices que diferencian travel, trip y journey .

Travel puede ser un verbo o un nombre:

First, pull up the airline's app on your phone. Most airline apps allow you to easily rebook your flight for free, provided you can supply your six-character reservation code. Getting in line to speak with an agent and calling the airline while you wait is also a good idea (albeit slower than using an app), and social media messaging, texting or WhatsApp may prove helpful. "During times of mass travel disruption, you should try all different avenues for getting help," says Nick Ewen, director of content at The Points Guy.

Ewen also recommends a lesser-known tactic: calling the airline's international numbers. Airlines have offices in Canada, Mexico, the U.K. and more. "While it can be costly, you can often get through to an agent more quickly," Ewen says.

Note that, depending on why your flight was canceled, finding seats on a new flight may alter your travel plans considerably.

2. Book a hotel

Next, determine if you need overnight accommodations. "If you were originally booked on the last flight of the night and there are no other options, grab a hotel room near the airport before they're all taken," Ewen advises.

3. Ask for a refund

If the airline cancels your flight or it's "significantly delayed" (a term currently defined on a case-by-case basis) and you're forced to change your travel plans, the Department of Transportation requires airlines to provide a full refund. Unfortunately, getting a refund can be a lengthy and frustrating process. Most airlines will instead offer a credit for future travel, but be wary of these, since they often come with limitations such as blackout and expiration dates.

When you're able to get a refund, note that it covers the total cost of airfare only and does not include other expenses associated with your trip.

If you believe you're entitled to a refund and the airline denies it to you, you can and should file a complaint with the DOT .

4. Reference the DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard

While you're entitled to a full refund, other flight cancellation policies may vary by airline. Go to the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard to see what each major airline will and will not offer in the event of a controllable cancellation.

What to do if your flight is delayed

In the event your flight is delayed, airlines are not legally obligated to give you a refund unless the DOT determines the delay to be "significant." But here's what you can do:

Research other flights

Investigate what other flights on that airline are headed to your destination and ask an agent if they can get you on one of them (without charging change fees). Also be sure to look into what's available on other airlines: If your original airline doesn't have any flights available on your departure date, an agent may be able to book you on a flight with a different carrier at no additional cost to you. Note, however, that airlines are not legally required to do this.

Inquire about other compensation

If you've been stranded at the airport for several hours, check in with an agent and reference the Commitments for Controllable Delays section on the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard – regardless of whether you're able to get on another flight. Some airlines may provide amenities such as vouchers for meals or overnight accommodations.

• Weather:  This is outside of the airline's control and is the single biggest reason for why we see flight disruptions. We saw this play out over the winter holidays in 2022, and even to some extent during the 2023 holiday season. Even if the weather is accurately predicted, it cannot be controlled, which means at times flight disruptions are unavoidable.
• Understaffed air traffic control:  The U.S. air travel industry has made strides in pilot hiring year over year, but when it comes to air traffic control, we are still down roughly 1,000 fewer air traffic controllers from a decade ago. New York metro area airports specifically have felt the brunt of this deficit, so much so that airlines were permitted to reduce schedules without penalty from the summer until the end of Q4 in 2023. At its lowest, the decrease in flights in the New York metro area resulted in about 11% fewer flights per day. With less trained staff, current air traffic controllers are stretched to the limit, and schedule reductions only temporarily solve this problem. Even with aggressive hiring efforts, training takes time and will not be a quick fix.

It's almost impossible to avoid canceled or delayed flights these days. But there are a few things you can do when booking flights to lessen your chances for travel disruptions.

Keep tabs on your aircraft: On your departure date, check your flight information before heading to the airport. You can keep a watchful eye on the flight's status – including the aircraft scheduled to operate your flight – using the airline's app or a third-party app such as FlightAware Flight Tracker (which also offers a website ), FlightRadar24 or TripIt Pro.

"As an example, if you're flying from Orlando to New York, and your plane is flying in from Chicago, the initial flight from Chicago to Orlando might be delayed (or canceled) before yours is," Ewen explains. "Airlines will try to find replacement aircraft in that case, but if you can identify a potential cancellation before it officially happens, you may be able to get rebooked ahead of the other 100-plus passengers on your flight."

Consider an alternate airport: When booking your flight, you may consider flying out of a different airport than the one you typically depart from. For example, a small regional airport with limited routes may mean less travel delays and hassle overall – or it may be worth driving further to another international airport for a nonstop flight to your destination rather than opting for a connecting flight close to home.

Fly in the morning: While flight disruptions are unpredictable, historically fewer cancellations and delays occur in the morning.

Avoid weekend travel: Fly on off-peak days like Tuesday or Wednesday. You'll often find cheaper flights on these days, too.

Opt for longer layovers: If you need to take more than one flight to reach your destination, book a flight with a longer layover to provide enough time to make your connecting flight. Keep in mind that at some airports you may need to go through security or customs for your connection. For longer journeys, you can reduce the risk of missing connecting flights by planning a city stopover. For example, Icelandair offers Iceland stopovers for no additional airfare.

Consider a credit card with travel protections: You don't need to be a frequent traveler to take advantage of credit card travel protections and perks. Here are a couple options to consider:

• Chase Sapphire Preferred :  This travel credit card ($95 annually) provides coverage for delays and cancellations when used to book flights. It also provides other travel protections such as delayed baggage coverage. "Even someone who travels just once or twice a year can still get phenomenal value from this card," Ewen says.
• American Express Platinum Card :  This card ($695 annually) offers travel insurance that reimburses some nonrefundable expenses like hotel accommodations, meals and other essentials as long as the trip was purchased using the card.

When choosing a travel credit card, you should also pay attention to other benefits. Even the most basic airline credit cards can offer travel perks like discounts on in-flight purchases and waived baggage fees, while premium travel credit cards (which require a higher annual fee) can include access to an airport lounge with food, drinks and Wi-Fi. Some also provide a concierge service to rebook flights or built-in trip insurance to cover unforeseen expenses.

Purchase travel insurance: If your credit card doesn't include travel protections, consider purchasing insurance with flight coverages – even a cheap travel policy can help protect your investment. Covered reasons include a travel carrier delay and loss or theft of travel documents, among other scenarios. Talk to a travel advisor: "Booking directly with your travel advisor provides more leverage and support if something goes wrong," explains Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer . "We can advocate for a better outcome should there be cancellations or hiccups in the itinerary."

Charlotte French, owner of Cavatica Luxury Travel , agrees, sharing this recent example: "My clients were booked on a nonstop United Flight from Tokyo (HND) to EWR (Newark) in business class, when it was canceled (due to technical issues). The clients were waiting in line to find other options for their return flight home; however, these were very limited. In parallel, I was able to speak to the United Airlines corporate desk (as a travel advisor) and was able to secure them in business class on a flight out of Tokyo the same day."

Avoid checking luggage: Travelers who only travel with a carry-on bag and/or personal item (such as a backpack or purse) that meet carry-on size restrictions will have the most flexibility in rebooking – and will also avoid the chance of lost luggage, another common issue. Some carriers will try to move checked luggage to a later flight for you and will make every effort to keep you and your belongings together. However, when airlines don't have interline agreements with other carriers, you'll have to allow enough time to retrieve and recheck your own luggage.

The number of canceled flights recently fell to its lowest rate in at least a decade — a welcome change for air travelers, especially following COVID-19-era travel disruptions.

Still, flight cancellations will always be inevitable, especially during the busy summer travel season. Summer 2024 is shaping up to be especially busy. "It was the busiest March on record for air travel according to the TSA," explains Nastro. "It also had the tenth busiest day on record, which is pretty significant since it is not a 'peak period' and is generally considered off-season in the Northern Hemisphere. If this trend continues, we are likely in for the busiest summer on record when it comes to air travel."

The advice of producing content that aligns with Google’s E-E-A-T guidelines is universal amongst SEO professionals, but guidance on how to achieve this is few and far between.

During the Helpful Content Update of September 2023 , many travel websites were impacted.

I ran a small study of more than 100 travel websites , and found that more websites in travel benefited from the update than lost out – but those who did see decreases saw large traffic drops.

From my analysis, many of the travel websites in my sample that saw declines were producing lots of content and, on paper, doing a lot of the box-tick things you see on most content checklists, but they lacked any kind of validity that the author was qualified to talk about the topics being published.

The Importance Of Authorship In Travel Content

When people find your travel brand online through your website or other content, they are more likely to buy something or think about buying if they believe your brand is real and that experts are behind the advice and services you provide.

This makes your brand look more believable and trustworthy, which is very important in nurturing a potential customer through their journey and influencing their research and buying stages.

Being seen as an expert and showing who creates your content helps your brand’s image and increases the chances of people buying from you. It also plays a big role in how well you do in search engine rankings.

Factors like being trustworthy and knowledgeable help Google decide if your website’s content is good, and whilst E-E-A-T is only a guideline laid out in the Quality Rater Guidelines, demonstrating these elements lends itself to a positive user experience and helpful content .

How Your Expertise Can Influence The Travel User Journey

The journey travelers take from researching to booking their vacations is complex and varied, far from a simple, straight path.

It moves through different stages, influenced by various factors such as personal preferences, recommendations, advertisements, and budget considerations.

Potential travelers might start by dreaming about destinations seen on social media, then move on to read reviews and compare prices on various sites.

As they gather information, their plans might change due to discoveries or insights, leading to multiple rounds of consideration before they finally make bookings.

Writing useful content and showing that you really know what you’re talking about can make people trust you more.

How Does Google Judge Authorship?

Google uses a method called reconciliation to determine whether different pieces of content across the Internet have been written by and are connected by a single author.

To determine authors and authorship, Google faces a number of challenges, as many authors may share the same name (especially if you have a common name like myself), and without clear defining markers or linking to a centralized location consistently, these signals can be confusing.

The process of reconciliation involves analyzing various signals and data points, from author bylines and dedicated author pages to structured data.

To aid Google in the reconciliation process, websites should work to validate authors by linking to personal websites and social media profiles in their article-level author bios and author pages. This consistency helps Google reduce mistakes in the reconciliation process.

This does add a process level of complexity to some businesses, as linking to personal social profiles or professional personal profiles brings a risk to the business should the individual post content the business doesn’t agree with, and this can cause conflict.

Displaying Authorship Through Structured Data

Years ago, Google used rel=”author” to identify authors, and now Google identifies the main entity behind content through on-page signals (e.g., a clearly marked content origin) and structured data/schema markup.

You can use various Schema types and attributions to identify and label authors.

While Google only officially supports a handful of schemas for SERP decoration and features, making use of all structured data (where relevant) has correlated with improvements in ranking and search performance.

We can also see correlative improvements when visually mapping entities using the Knowledge Graph API.

Person Schema (Schema.org/Person)

This schema is used to describe a person. Attributes you might use include:

• name : The name of the person.
• jobTitle : The job title of the person (e.g., executive director, writer, journalist).
• worksFor : An organization the person works for (can be used to tie the author to a brand or website).
• url : URL of the person’s official website or social profile.
• image : URL of an image of the person.
• sameAs : An array of URLs that you can use to link the person to their social media profiles, Wikipedia page, etc.

CreativeWork Schema (Schema.org/CreativeWork)

This schema is a broad category that includes articles, blog posts, videos, etc. It can be used to define the relationship between an author and their work. Attributes include:

• author : The author of the content, which can be linked to the Person schema.
• publisher : The organization responsible for publishing the work, which can be linked to the Organization schema.
• datePublished : The date on which the content was published.
• headline : A headline or title of the content.

Article Schema (schema.org/Article)

A more specific type of CreativeWork focused on articles. Attributes similar to CreativeWork can be used here, with additional emphasis on:

• articleSection : High-level section name(s) that the article belongs to (e.g., Technology, Lifestyle).

How to use the Chase Sapphire Reserve $300 annual travel credit to save on travel

In addition to the bonus points on travel and dining charges, a marquee benefit of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® since its debut in 2016 has been its $300 travel credit each year. And unlike similar perks on competing cards, this credit is incredibly easy to use on all sorts of travel.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve comes with a $550 annual fee , but if you spend at least $300 per year on travel, the effective annual fee is much less painful.

This annual credit is in addition to other Sapphire Reserve perks, such as Priority Pass membership , the application fee credit toward Global Entry/PreCheck every four years, bonus points on Lyft rides (through March 2025) and up to $5 in monthly DoorDash credits (plus a DashPass membership when activated by Dec. 31, 2024), which together make it an easier call to continue holding the card.

So how exactly do you use the Sapphire Reserve's travel credit? Thankfully, it's really, really easy. The (sorta) bad news? It's so simple and automatic that you may use the credit before you even realize it.

When do you earn the $300 Chase Sapphire Reserve travel credit?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve annual $300 travel credit is awarded each year that you have the card and is ready to use as soon as you open your new account.

In most cases, when this credit resets, it is tied to a cardmember year, not a calendar year. That means when you first opened the card will usually determine the date you get a fresh $300 travel credit each year.

The exception is those who opened a Sapphire Reserve before May 21, 2017, who are awarded the annual travel credit based on a calendar year. In that case, the credit is awarded after the last statement closure date in December, regardless of when during the year the account was opened.

This contrasts American Express' airline fee credits on cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express , as those are always awarded on a calendar-year basis (enrollment is required).

What counts toward the Sapphire Reserve's travel credit?

A great element of the Chase Sapphire Reserve's travel credit is that it is quite broad in what types of charges it covers.

Essentially, you can typically use the annual travel credit on anything that codes as travel on your Sapphire Reserve. Remember, you'll earn 3 points per dollar on travel charges by swiping the card, so the charges that award bonus points will be the same charges you can use toward the travel credit. (However, know that you don't earn points on the travel charges offset by the $300 travel credit.)

Some examples of types of purchases that count for the Sapphire Reserve's travel credit include:

• Airline charges
• Campgrounds
• Car rental agencies
• Cruise lines
• Travel agency services
• Train tickets
• Bus tickets
• Taxis and car services
• Toll bridges and highways
• Parking lots and garages

Because airline charges generally code as travel, you can use the credit on purchases such as airline tickets, taxes on award tickets, upgrades, seat assignment fees, checked bag fees, onboard snacks, change fees and lap infant fees.

Your cruise deposits and payments should also count, as do hotel bookings and deposits. If you have to pay for parking, taxis or road tolls in your normal life, you can even use the travel credit toward those everyday charges.

What does not count toward the Sapphire Reserve travel credit?

Of course, not all purchases you may think of in the travel space code as travel charges. If a purchase doesn't code as a travel charge, you won't be able to use the $300 travel credit from the Sapphire Reserve.

Items that code as travel vary and can also change at any time. Some things that may not code as travel include theme park tickets brought directly from theme parks, ski lift tickets , Points.com purchases, some airline or travel gift card purchases , inflight purchases that are processed by a third party and some meals eaten at a hotel but not charged to a room.

(Pro tip: If you want Disney tickets to code as a travel charge, book them via a third-party travel site such as Get Away Today or Undercover Tourist .)

How do you use the Sapphire Reserve travel credit?

Using your Sapphire Reserve travel credit is very simple: just use the card to pay for eligible travel purchases — that's it. There is nothing to activate, no codes to use or special sites to book through.

The offsetting statement credits will usually automatically appear on your account within a couple of days, as shown below, and this will continue until you've used the year's travel credit in full.

How to see if you've used your Sapphire Reserve travel credit

If you've lost track of whether you've used up your Sapphire Reserve annual travel credit, you can easily figure it out by logging into Chase Travel℠ , selecting your Chase Sapphire Reserve card and scrolling down the home page.

This section will tell you the month when the next year's credit will become available so you know to use up this year's credit before then.

Bottom line

It's great when credit cards give you annual travel credits that are easy to use, and the $300 travel credit on the Chase Sapphire Reserve is about as simple as it comes. Every year, you'll automatically get $300 in statement credits whenever your card is used on a travel purchase — effectively lowering the fee on the card to $250 per year if you maximize the credit.

I love earning travel rewards. For me, the only thing better than taking a great vacation is doing so for free, or very close to it. And as any award travel junkie will tell you, the best kind of rewards don’t come from a single airline or hotel program, they’re flexible points you can transfer to multiple airlines or hotel programs. There are only a handful of credit card issuers that offer these kinds of rewards, and Wells Fargo just joined this exclusive club with its new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. . When I first heard the details, I decided to apply as soon as the card became available. Here’s why:

Strong rewards for spending

This card offers 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in purchases in the first three months of account opening. That’s decent, but not earth-shattering. What does move the needle is how many rewards points you can earn from your spending. This card features 5 points per $1 on hotels, 4 points per $1 on airlines, 3 points per $1 on other travel and dining and 1 point per $1 on other purchases. For a frequent traveler like myself, this card has serious potential.

Compelling transfer partners, and the promise of more

Cardholders can transfer their Wells Fargo Rewards points to the following airline and hotel programs, most at a 1:1 ratio:

• Choice Privileges (1:2 ratio)
• Air France-KLM Flying Blue
• Avianca Lifemiles
• British Airways Executive Club
• Aer Lingus AerClub
• Iberia Plus

While this is a modest list, Wells Fargo has indicated that more partners will be added throughout the year. But even now, Wells Fargo Rewards points are extremely valuable. For example, you can transfer points to the Choice Privileges program of Choice Hotels at a 1:2 ratio. That means that 10,000 Wells Fargo Rewards points will turn into 20,000 Choice points, which can be a great deal, especially at their high-end hotels in the U.S. and their hotels in Europe. 

You can also transfer your card earnings to Avianca Lifemiles, which can be redeemed on flights operated by the airline’s Star Alliance partners such as United, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Swiss and Turkish Airlines. Likewise, the Flying Blue program is great for awards on SkyTeam airlines such as Air France, KLM, Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic and others. And the British Airways Executive Club offers strong value for awards on their Oneworld partners such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Japan Airlines (JAL). 

Earning travel rewards is a long game, and by the time I’ve earned enough rewards for a big redemption, I’m hopeful that Wells Fargo might add some additional, valuable transfer partners. 

Low annual fee 

This card has an annual fee of just $95, which is common among cards of this type, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. However, the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card also comes with a $50 annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase. You don’t have to purchase the flights from Wells Fargo’s travel agency — any airline should work. For me, that brings the net yearly cost down to just $45, which is very low for a card with these features.

Final verdict

I write about credit cards for a living, but I can’t rush out and apply for every new credit card on the market. However, the value proposition for the new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card is strong enough to make even this veteran credit card journalist take a chance at submitting an application. Thankfully, I was immediately approved, and I’m looking forward to using this card and taking some fun trips with the rewards.
