Swimsuits. The mere word evokes either fear or excitement in your heart, depending on just how confident you are. But if you have an ocean, lake, or pool in your vacation future, you’re going to need one ( unless you’re headed to a more risqué destination ). Here are some of this season’s best swimsuits for every type of body to help you find something that will flatter you, whether you’re more of a lounger or a hardcore adventurer.
Affordable Swimsuits Under $50
Adore Me is a subscription-based clothing brand with most swimsuit styles available for less than $30. They offer a variety of sizes in every style imaginable, from one pieces with interesting cutouts to high-rise floral bikinis .
Cupshe swimsuits are available on Amazon, with many styles under $30. Styles range from this trendy two-piece to fuller coverage one-pieces .
The Essential Beach Packing List
Target is my personal favorite for finding affordable swimsuits. The brand carries hundreds of styles available each season for men , women , and kids , all under $50.
Best Active Swimsuits
One-piece active swimsuits.
Sometimes a simple one-piece is all you need to double as your stylish and active swimsuit. Seafolly’s Active Deep-V Maillot One-Piece features sturdy support straps, removable cups, and simple cutout details in the front and back that make it a unique active option. It’s a little pricier, but worth the splurge since you’ll be able to wear it everywhere.
Active Swimsuit Rash Guards
Long-sleeve rash guards are a must-have for hours of surfing or swimming around unknown terrain. Invest in a long-sleeve swim top like UV Skinz 50 UPF water shirts and jackets. The Women’s Water Jacket is quick-drying and resistant to chlorine and salt, and it zips completely open in the front.
For men, the pullover Long Sleeve Sun & Swim Shirt has additional neck coverage, plus the same sun protection and water resistance.
15 Beach Bag Essentials You Need for Summer
Hybrid Swimwear-Activewear
Want activewear that can double as swimwear? Men can rely on board shorts, and for women, some active swimsuits will do the trick. AdoreShe’s Racerback Tankini is essentially a water-friendly active top, and UV SKINZ’s Active Swim Shorts are perfect for hikes or bike trips that turn into kayaking or swimming stops.
Swimsuits with Extra Coverage
Extra protection from sun, bugs, and other elements is possible with the right active swimsuit. AXESEA’s Long Sleeve Rash Guard is ideal for surfing and kayaking in breezy or sunny conditions—it’ll keep your upper body protected and your legs free.
For men, surf brand O’Neill offers a lot more than just wetsuits: Try a UV-protection top that’s lightweight and quick-drying, like the Basic Skins Sun Shirt .
5 Comfortable and Packable Dress Shoes You Can Actually Walk In
Stylish Swimsuits for Vacation Trendsetters
prAna’s line of swimwear includes shorts, rash guards, cover-ups, and bathing suits (that even fit up to DD-cup coverage) for women , as well as select men’s swim trunks .
Fair Harbor
Fair Harbor is a stylish and sustainably produced swimsuit brand that makes styles for women and men , as well as T-shirts, hats, and bags.
SummerSalt’s swimsuits are made of recycled material and have UPF 50+ protection. The brand makes stylish swimsuits for women and kids in a variety of trendy styles and bright colors.
Aerie by American Eagle Outfitters makes trendy and affordable swimsuits for all body types. The Bikini Mix & Match finder lets you see what style of bikini top works with a standard bikini bottom.
9 of Tahiti’s Best Overwater Bungalows
Plus-Sized Swimsuits
Stylish swimsuits for plus-sized travelers .
Target offers a variety of styles for plus-size travelers, like this colorblock style and ruched halter top .
Active Swimsuits for Plus-Sized Travelers
Plus-size active swimsuits can be secure one-pieces or versatile two-piece outfits. Always For Me’s Charlie Surplice Racerback Tankini Top looks like a workout outfit but is water-friendly. For a true suit sans shorts, Swimsuits for All’s Colorblock One-Piece has comfortable, wide straps and is perfect for the pool or outdoors.
The Most Comfortable Travel Shoes
Specialty Swimsuits for Plus-Sized Travelers
The appropriately named website Swimsuits for All offers plus-size bikinis, one-pieces, swim dresses, and more for sizes 8 to 34. You’ll find fashionable travel swimwear here, including a line designed by plus-size model Ashley Graham.

Things To Consider While Buying The Best Travel Swimsuits
When it comes to finding the top swimsuits for travel, there are a few things to consider. Here is a buying guide to help you find the perfect swimwear for your beach vacation:
1. Customizable
Finding the perfect swimsuit can be just as challenging as finding the perfect pair of jeans . Look for swimsuits that can be adjusted to fulfill your needs. If the shoulder straps are adjustable, they won’t fall off or dig into your shoulders.
Removable cups are also a great feature because they can be changed if they get worn or lose their shape without having to buy a new swimsuit for your next trip. Choose a tankini with straps if you want to adjust the length of the top to fit your body.
2. Quality Of Stitching
Is the suit entirely lined or only in certain areas? What about the stitching? Is there a distinction between single, double, and zig-zag stitches? Are there any loose threads?
A good suit should be fully lined and have either double-row or zig-zag stitches throughout. If the suit’s threads are loose in the store, it won’t last a day outside in the sun.
3. Ultraviolet Protection Factor
UPF clothing, including swimsuits, is becoming immensely popular. UPF is used to measure its ability to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
The more there is, the better it blocks UV rays. Choose a swimsuit with a UPF of 50 or higher, which means that it allows fewer than 2% of the sun’s rays to pass through.
4. Fabric That Dries Quickly
Most of the time, quick-drying fabrics work by minimizing absorption. Many fabrics are nano-treated with a coating that repels water, resulting in less moisture to remove when hanging them out to dry.
Look for polyester-nylon blends if you want to feel super light and high-tech. If you think about wicking, consider shorts made of PBT fabric.
5. Pockets With Zippers
Travel shorts are only useful if they can be relied upon. I despise little, flimsy pockets in shorts or swim trunks, especially while I’m at the beach. Look for men’s swim shorts that have at least one fully functional zipper, typically on the rear pocket.
Even if you’re a good surfer, it’s great to know that you can carry a couple of bucks with you for a snack or a drink.
6. Comfortable Fit
There is a swimsuit with shorts out there that will fit you perfectly, thanks to hyperflex weaves, blends of nylon and elastane, and stylish patterns.
The days of chafing from the irritating mesh lining are long gone. Modern swimsuits are made with high-tech materials like microwave padding, nylon blends, and other high-tech fabrics to make sure they are comfy.
If you just want a fashionable swimsuit for travel, you can sometimes get away with buying the cheapest one you can find, knowing that you won’t be wearing it for more than a season.
Spend a little more money if you want to swim a lot of laps in a classic swimsuit with shorts.

FAQs About Best Travel Swimsuits
People have a lot of questions about the best swimwear. Some of the most common questions are answered below.
What’s the best way to wash a swimsuit?
It’s worth investing a little additional time in your swimsuits’ care if you want them to preserve their shape and last for seasons to come. If you’re washing them in the machine, use a mesh laundry bag to keep them separate and safe. They should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild, bleach-free detergent and let to air dry. Even better, if feasible, hand wash your swimsuits in warm water to preserve the colors vibrant and the form fresh.
How long will my swimsuit last?
Even the most budget-friendly swimwear should last you for at least a season. Well-made suits, on the other hand, can last for years. Suits’ endurance is influenced by their quality of construction, as well as their exposure to the environment and chemicals such as chlorine, which causes them to disintegrate faster.

What kind of swimsuit should I wear for swimming laps?
You want the best modest swimwear that is simple to wear, reduces drag in the water, and keeps its shape swim after swim. Men’s swimsuits are referred to as Jammers or Briefs. Women commonly wear a one-piece or two-piece swim training swimsuit.
Do swimsuits dry fast?
If you want your perfect swimsuit to have a long and happy life, the best way to dry it is to lay it flat, away from heat and direct sunshine. If you need your suit to dry fast, carefully roll it in a towel before laying it flat to air dry.

Where a summer holiday is concerned, swimwear is key, and the swimsuit has long since been considered the bikini ’s modest sister. We’re calling it now: This is going to be a breakout season for swimwear. After a downtrodden year for fashion, designers and brands have emerged with a vibrant, refreshed perspective on everything from classic swimwear pieces to boundary-pushing silhouettes. Thankfully for us, they’re embracing the radiance of the season at a time when we’re all ready to peel away the layers of the past year—and if we can do so from a postcard-perfect island getaway , all the better.
We rounded up 15 unique swimsuit brands that have left us inspired and ready to hit the waters—preferably with a cool, adult beverage in hand. From upscale and sustainable fabrics (made from recycled plastic bottles and fishnets, nonetheless) to inclusive branding and messaging, they're a far cry from the same string bikinis you see on every beach. So pack some sunscreen and a towel , and enjoy the warmest days of the year wearing one of these need-to-know-now swimsuit brands. (Looking for more modest swimwear options? We've got those, too.)
This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.
Who doesn’t love a good mini-me dress-up moment? (We’re asking you, Beyoncé and Blue Ivy.) While most mommy-and-me fashion is pegged for mothers and daughters, Lex Swimwear is a rare brand made for moms and their sons, who can coordinate in chic, modern silhouettes like the Pierre Short —a cross between a bike short and bikini bottom—and the Laura Top , created by founder Madelyn Mejia. A newcomer to the swimwear scene, Lex’s luxurious eco-friendly pieces are produced in Italy and feature solid colors and delicate patterns that will make you and your brood stand out in any crowd.
If you’re anything like us, you’re a firm believer that swimwear isn’t solely reserved for the water, especially on vacation. With high-quality details and trendy designs in mind, Florida-based Montce will keep you stylish both in the ocean and the moment you step back on the beach. Think cool animal-print crop tops that match hourglass-flattering bottoms , kaleidoscopic-striped one pieces, gingham cropped peasant tops , and bohemian-inspired crochet suits that look just as good paired with cutoff jeans as they do submerged in water.
Leave it to a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model to create a super flattering swimwear line. Based out of Los Angeles, Tori Praver created her eponymous brand to celebrate femininity, beauty, and confidence. Take the Emmy top , for example. The sleeveless tank top-style suit is cropped for a modern fit and has an added wrap detail that could easily double as a blouse for out of the water (which means one less top to pack, too).
Recently adding swimwear to its already popular line of apparel basics, Everlane presents seven timeless pieces that are designed for ultimate mix-and-match pleasure. Necklines include the Square-Neck Bikini Top and Tie-Front Bikini Top that easily complement any of its bottoms, such as the High-Rise Hipster and traditionally cut Bikini Bottom . While Everlane may be new to swimwear, its core tenet of ethical practices is unwavering, creating pieces that are made of 82 percent regenerated nylon derived from recycled plastic.
Sustainability is an applause-worthy buzzword in the fashion industry these days, and Londre delivers on its commitment to be as low-impact as possible on the environment. The women-run brand features ethically-made swimwear created out of recycled plastic bottles found on the streets and beaches of Taiwan (100,000 bottles and counting). And that’s not all: Londre incorporates a sustainable ChitoSanté fiber , made of crushed shells and known for its anti-bacterial and odor-resistant qualities, into pieces like The 1813 Puff Shoulder Top (a chic top that can be work forward and backward for major versatility), The Banded Scrunch Bottom with a flattering high waist, and The Ruffle Shoulder One Piece with a slim attached belt.
A brand known for embracing and promoting inclusivity, Girlfriend Collective’s launch into swimwear doesn’t falter from that core principle, creating styles in sizes from XXS to 6XL. GF Swim presents eight versatile swim pieces with sherbet-esque hues, ranging from the one-shouldered Caspian Bikini Top and classic scoop-neck Hermosa Bikini Top to the Clemente One Piece with thin, adjustable crisscross ties in the back (say goodbye to noticeable tan lines). And, in classic Girlfriend Collective fashion, every GF Swim purchase generates a one percent donation to Healthy Seas, an initiative focused on cleaning the world’s oceans.
The super-luxe Italian brand—which features two-pieces and maillots like this sleek one-shoulder swimsuit with a spaghetti strap top, and the Deep V swimsuit with its plunging neckline and daring open back—has quickly made fans out of celebrities like Dua Lipa and Rihanna . (The maillots are fashionable and well-crafted enough to double-up as a bodysuit in the evening.) And while we love the adult styles, it’s the sparkly, frilly pint-sized versions of these looks that make us really love the brand.
What happens when two Lululemon veterans join forces and combine their years of activewear expertise to take on the swimwear market? Premium swimwear options for active women that are ideal for everything from surfing, swimming, and skateboarding to happy hour and sunbathing, that’s what. It’s no wonder Left on Friday has made fans out of Jessica Alba, Maria Sharapova , and Kate Upton with pieces like its Hi Dive Top with a high halter neck, best-selling High Tide Bottom with medium rear coverage, and Double Scoop Suit with a peek-a-boo open panel in the back.
Early in its company history, iconic Australian fashion label Zimmermann began elevating swimwear to high-fashion status, culminating with several fashion awards, including the 2017 Best Australian Womenswear at the Australian Fashion Laureate Awards . Mixing sophisticated femininity with clever color choices and fashion-forward perspective, like with the bold, blood-orange Shelly Tie 1PC with its scarf-tie waist and the Poppy Ladder Tri Bikini with a ladder-like cutout, Zimmermann has created its own space in the swimwear world.
After taking a year off to retool and emphasize a deliberate entrance into the slow-fashion movement, Emily May London is back with a bang. The highly structured, bold, and well-fitted swimwear pieces—like the San Clemente Bodysuit —are inspired by sportswear looks. The cupped underwire pieces, like the San Marco Bikini Top , provide ample bust support with modern styling, so go ahead and hit the waves or spike a beach volleyball with confidence. Even more impressive is that the U.K.-based brand uses Econyl, a soft Italian fabric made from recycled ocean plastics, and donates five percent of proceeds from every order to The Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
If an 11-time world champion surfer can’t create the ultimate swim trunks , then we don’t know who can. Surf pro Kelly Slater’s clothing brand Outerknown features high-performing, effortlessly cool board shorts that are made from recycled or renewable fibers, so you can look sharp on your next beach swim while still doing good by the ocean. And while the brand hasn't created its own swimwear for women yet, Outerknown does sell a selection of suits and rashguards from surf brand Seea , like this tank-top style two-piece that will stay in place as you're splashing through the waves.
Let’s be honest: When Mara Hoffman does swimwear, she goes full throttle. With a massive collection that includes everything from the sporty to the runway-inspired to the bold , the one common denominator in every Mara Hoffman swim piece is an elevated design completed with sustainable practices. It’s nothing new to the trailblazing brand, which has been practicing mindful consumption and distribution since 2015 .
Andrea Iyamah’s swimwear collection is a favorite among celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Ciara, and Issa Rae, who’ve all donned a range of looks from the brand. Founded by Nigerian-Canadian designer Dumebi Iyamah, expect to make a statement with the vibrant, figure-hugging, pieces (these embellished tops will surely turn heads) that are a celebration of African resort wear.
Designed with the plus-size beach-goer in mind, Eloquii brings a fashion-always perspective to its swimwear collection. It’s no wonder that the likes of Chrissy Metz is a fan of the brand, which carries sizes 14-28. Take the on-trend Puff-Sleeve Swimsuit , a one-piece suit with a cut-out midsection that doubles as a dinner outfit when worn with a skirt or high-waisted jeans.
While its prints and patterns reference Australian Indigenous culture, Liandra Swim goes a step further by naming each suit after an inspiring Indigenous woman, including physicians, artists, and actors. For example, its long-sleeved Emily Top —ideal for those looking for sun coverage or more modest swimwear —is named for the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, a prominent Aboriginal contemporary artist. The eco-conscious brand also brings a top-to-bottom perspective on sustainability, mailing its swimwear using home-compostable bags in packaging made from cassava, a non-toxic, biodegradable material.

The Best Swimsuit Brands According to Fashion Stylists
Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.
With summer right around the corner, it’s time to start getting this season’s swimwear in order–and we’re here to help. Finding the right swimsuit to keep on-call and ready can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. However, it doesn’t have to be. If you are hesitant about where to start with your swimsuit search, there’s no need to fear as we compiled a list of the best swimsuit brands on the market to help get you started.
Although many of these picks are our personal recommendations, we also tapped fashion stylist Leena Alsulaiman , stylist and style coach, Desiree Miranda , personal stylist and founder of Miranda New York, and Christina Stein , personal stylist and CEO of Style By Christina, to help us develop this list of the best swimsuit brands on the market keeping budget, features, and materials in mind.
What to consider when buying swimsuits online
What is your cost-to-benefit ratio for this purchase.
When thinking about how much you’d ideally like to spend on your next swimsuit, there are a couple of factors you should consider. If you live in a warm climate and/or spend lots of time in flip-flops and in the water or are shopping for someone who does, it may be worthwhile to invest more in a swimsuit with additional features and designed to last longer. On the other hand, if you don’t plan on swimming much and are only looking for a bathing suit for a short period of time or if you’re (or if the person you’re shopping for is) headed on vacation, you may feel comfortable allotting a smaller budget towards your next swimsuit. However, that is not to say that just because a swimsuit is cheaper does not mean it won’t meet the mark when it comes to durability, design, and overall quality. Considering your cost-to-benefit ratio is an individualized but important process to ensure you select a swimsuit from a brand that fits your budget and meets your expectations.
What features are non-negotiable?
Since not all swimsuits are created equally with regard to their features, it’s important you’re knowledgeable about the different kinds of features out there to make sure you put your money towards a swimsuit that you’re satisfied with.
“For example, if you have a larger bust, look for swimsuits with adjustable straps or built-in bra cups for added support and comfort,” says Alsulaiman. “Or, if you're self-conscious about your midsection, look for swimsuits with tummy control panels or ruching to help smooth that area.” Some swimsuits also have design features, including adhered belts and laces to enhance your natural figure in addition to UPF protection. If you’re particular about a specific swimsuit material, knowing about which are available and those that are recommended by our experts, such as nylon, polyester, and spandex, is key.
Do you think you’ll return or exchange your swimsuit?
Not every swimsuit brand has the same policies when it comes to returns and exchanges. Even if a brand has photos of pieces on different models, which is great as it provides you with a more accurate representation of how the piece may look on you, it is not always a surefire way to know if it will fit you as you expected or if a size accurately represents what you’re used to. That said, it is a best practice to thoroughly review their shipping, returns, and exchange policies and make sure you feel comfortable with them before giving your hard-earned money to a swimsuit brand. Also, make sure you carefully examine the size chart as each brand is different. “Sizing is not always accurate, so I would consider going with your usual size and one size up,” says Stein. “Sometimes a one-piece can be a little smaller because it’ll stretch and give you the fit that you want.”
Our top picks for the best swimsuit brands

How I selected the best swimsuit brands
Expert advice.
I selected the best swimsuit brands after interviewing professional fashion stylists about features, budget, and sizing. During our interviews, they provided some swimsuit brand recommendations, which I took into account and included in this list.
Personal recommendations
Living in Florida, I’ve tested my fair share of beach accessories—like beach towels and swimsuits—and have learned that not all swimsuits are created equally. That said, I’ve included a couple of personal swimsuit brand recommendations on this list (some of which our experts also recommended).
Since our experts noted in our interviews that swimsuits made from nylon, polyester, and spandex tend to last the longest, most of the brands above offer swimsuits made with these materials or a combination of these materials.
Not everyone has the same preferences when it comes to their preferred swimsuits. Keeping that in mind, I selected swimsuit brands that offer multiple styles, including one-pieces, bikinis, tankinis, swim dresses, and cover-ups. I also tried to include brands that offer several colors and patterns to cater to different preferences.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What swimwear is most flattering.
There is not one type of swimwear that is the most flattering as the definition of flattering varies by person and how one feels while wearing a piece of swimwear. However, Alsulaiman recommends selecting styles that enhance the features on your body that you like the most and want to highlight That said, there are a couple of features she recommends looking for when swimsuit shopping that are generally flattering, including ruching, wrap-style tops, and high-waisted bottoms. If you want to appear slimmer, she advises opting for darker-colored swimsuits and those with vertical stripes. However, “bold prints and bright colors can help draw attention to your best features, too,” says Alsulaiman.
Which swimsuits last the longest?
All of our experts agree that looking for pieces made out of durable and high-quality materials such as polyester, nylon, and spandex is the key to finding a swimsuit that will last for a long time. After all, when you invest in a swimsuit, you should do so from a brand that recognizes that your new garment will be exposed to potentially damaging elements whether that be chlorine, the sun, or sunscreen, and therefore should be strong and able to withstand regular washing without damaging.
How much should a swimsuit cost?
According to Miranda, the price of a swimsuit will vary depending on its fabric, designer, and features. "A good quality swimsuit should be around $100-$180 at most,” says Miranda. You want to make sure you opt for a brand that has been creating swimsuits for a while and perfected their craft.” With this in mind, it’s possible to find high-quality swimsuits for a couple of dollars more or less than that range, and may depend on whether a swimsuit is on sale or just hit the market.
How do you hide lower belly fat in a swimsuit?
While we believe that every body at the beach is a “beach body,” if that is what will make you more comfortable when at the beach or the pool, Miranda recommends looking for a swimsuit that drapes down or has ruching at the front. Many swimsuits also contain shapewear panels and are made with “tummy-controlling” fabric which can help with the process. If you want to keep things simple, Alsulaiman recommends opting for a high-waisted bottom if you’re shopping for a two-piece suit or simply going for a one-piece.

The Best Period Swimwear of 2024, Tested and Reviewed by Experts
Feel confident on the beach — even during your period.
We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.
In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we test both menstrual products and the best swimsuits . In recent years, our analysts have tested over 50 menstrual products and have had over 200 testers try period products for real-user feedback. Our GH analysts have worn period swimwear themselves and have shared their thoughts on properties like style, construction, comfort and function. Using our expertise in menstrual products and swimwear, our Textiles Lab pros chose these period swimwear picks from top-performing brands with rave reviews from our testers or online reviewers and picks that they've tried themselves and love to wear.
Our top picks:
- Best Overall: Knix Leakproof Classic One-Piece
- Best Value: Savvi Wear Leakproof Bikini Bottoms
- Best Bikini: Ruby Love Period Swimwear Tank Set
- Best for Teens and Tweens: KT by Knix Period-Proof Sport One-Piece
- Best Low-Rise: Modibodi Swimwear Soft Stretch Brazilian Brief
Knix Leakproof Classic One-Piece
Knix's period products continue to outperform others in our Textiles Lab evaluations, and the brand's line of period swimwear is no exception. This comfortable swimsuit absorbs up to three tampons of menstrual flow for protection at the pool on even heavier days. Our testers were impressed with how flattering the traditional maillot one-piece suit is without any ruching details or extra compressive panels. The top has a built-in bra with removable cups for easy washing, but some reviewers say the removable cups are prone to folding during wear.
There are adjustable straps for a better, more secure fit, and the brand offers sizing for larger busts; standard sizes fit A to DD cups, while "+" sizes are designed for cup sizes E to G. If you're looking for a trendier style, the wrap one-piece suit is another popular option with a waist cutout and cute tie detail.
Savvi Wear Leakproof Bikini Bottoms
Starting at just $30, Savvi period swimwear is one of the most affordable styles we reviewed. These bottoms have a simple design that's easy to style with your favorite bikini or tankini top. The brand recently extended the leakproof gusset to offer more coverage and better protection.
Online reviewers were impressed with this pair's flattering fit and leakproof design. One said, "I have a very heavy flow and these swim bottoms did exactly as advertised; there [were] absolutely no accidental drips or anything!" Another reviewer who also gave five stars said, "No leaking, even after sitting on a white towel after getting out of the water."
Ruby Love Period Swimwear Tank Set
When it comes to period swimwear, Ruby Love has the most color, size and style options of any brand we've evaluated. The absorbent cotton liner has the capacity of three tampons , so you can feel comfortable wearing it without additional period protection . You can also add one of the brand's double-sided reusable pads into the gusset for even more security. According to the brand, they are made in the USA just like its swimwear and other period styles.
With an adjustable halter top and side ties on the bottom, this mid-rise bikini is customizable for your perfect fit. If you order the wrong size, Ruby Love offers size exchanges within 30 days (unworn and unwashed), but the brand won't accept returns.
KT by Knix Period-Proof Sport One-Piece
Period swimwear is a great option for tweens and teens who may not be comfortable wearing tampons or menstrual cups. This sleek fully-lined one-piece swimsuit from KT by Knix is designed to be worn during swim meets but is stylish enough to wear on vacation . We appreciate the wider straps that cross in the back so they stay put while you swim and like that the top has a built-in elastic band at the chest for added support.
Online reviewers love the style of this suit, but some wish it had fuller bum coverage. The full collection of KT by Knix styles is designed specifically to fit teens, so be sure to review the brand's size chart before buying.
Modibodi Swimwear Soft Stretch Brazilian Brief
No one would ever guess these low-rise, full-coverage bikini bottoms from Modibodi were period swimwear. Online reviewers say they feel just like regular bikini bottoms thanks to the super discrete liner that is not bulky, unlike some other period swimwear . We appreciate that this style uses regenerated nylon for a more sustainable buy. With the absorbency of just one to two tampons, these bottoms are best worn for shorter swims, lighter days or as backup with other period products. Pair them with a matching top from Modibodi's swimwear line , or coordinate it with a top already in your closet.
Knix High Rise Leakproof Swim Bottom
High-rise bikinis offer more coverage and security than traditional bikini bottoms. This style from Knix is made with a compressive nylon and spandex fabric that has smoothing four-way stretch, so it stays in place and feels comfy all day long. Reviewers love the brand's inclusive size range — XS to XXXXL — and the variety of other swimwear options . If you want some help with picking the right size and style, Knix offers free virtual fit consultations.
One GH analyst who has tried these bottoms was so wowed by the comfortable cut and leg openings that she opts to wear them even when she's not on her period, but some of our testers found the horizontal seam across the waist to be unflattering.
Beautikini Period Swimwear One Piece Leakproof Swimsuit
Your period should be the last thing on your mind when headed to a swim meet or training session. When swimming for exercise, you need a snug suit that offers full coverage, so it stays put in the water. This Beautikini has everything you need in a training suit, plus added leakproof protection. It has a built-in racerback for support up top to minimize bounce. Online reviewers love this suit's chic design that's sold in six colorways. One said, "[This swimsuit] makes my daughter feel comfortable at swim practice!" Another added, "It is a really flattering suit, that is well-made and durable." The brand recommends sizing up for adults.
Rosaseven Lingerie Alice Period Bathing Suit
Instead of a basic scoop neck, this fully lined period swimsuit from Rosaseven Lingerie has a plunge neckline that our experts love. The straps can be adjusted for a better fit, and they cross in the back so they stay in place while you swim. The brand claims this swimsuit holds up to four tampons of menstrual flow, making it the most absorbent period swimsuit our experts have evaluated.
One analyst who has worn this style described the material as "thick with great stretch" and said it was higher quality than other swimsuits she's worn. However, she did share that the liner is more noticeable in this swimsuit than in other period suits, but she appreciates the security. The brand prides itself on making its swimsuits to order, so it can take up to six weeks to receive your suit after purchasing. Also, note that our Textiles Lab analysts were unable to validate the brand's antimicrobial claims.
Scarlet Leakproof Period Surf-Short
Whether you prefer more modest bottoms or are planning to be active at the beach, a pair of swim shorts is a great option for additional coverage that stays in place while you lounge, surf or swim . They're only available in black, but they're made with a trendy ribbed material for a textured look. The liner has the absorbency of three tampons, making these shorts ideal to wear without other period products. You can also try the brand's high-rise, high-cut bottoms for less coverage on lighter days.
How we chose the best period swimwear
At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our Textiles Lab pros analyze period products of all kinds, including tampons, pads, menstrual cups, discs and period underwear. Over the past few years, we have tested over 50 period products , rating each for properties including absorbency, fluid retention and even shedding. We've also shared period products with over 200 testers who have provided feedback on comfort, absorbency and fit.
Along with testing period products, our analysts regularly evaluate swimwear and have reviewed over 30 styles in our Lab, considering how well they hold up against multiple cycles in the wash, how well they keep their shape after being stretched and if the fabric can resist abrasion from rough surfaces like the sides of a concrete pool. We've also shared swim styles with testers and analysts who wear the swimsuits in their real lives and share their thoughts on style and appearance, as well as comfort and fit.
What to look for when shopping for the best period swimwear
Like other menstrual products, period swimwear is available with different absorbency levels. The listed absorbency level is how much menstrual flow the absorbent core can hold, but leaks are still possible (especially when moving around and going in and out of the water).
Period swimwear is available in a variety of swim styles, including one-piece swimsuits, high-waisted bikinis and traditional tie bikinis. You should choose a style you like and feel comfortable in. Because period swimwear is still an emerging category, there are fewer styles and color options available compared to regular swimwear.
With period swimwear and period underwear, a proper fit is crucial to prevent leaks. It should feel snug and secure to ensure it stays put. Our picks are available in a range of size options, from XXS–4XL as well as teen sizing too.
How does period swimwear work?
While it might look just like your favorite bathing suit from the outside, period swimwear has a hidden absorbent lining or gusset inside. The gussets are constructed with layers of material that absorb menstrual flow and keep it trapped in place. A hidden internal layer of the gusset tends to be waterproof or water-repellent to help prevent leaks while you swim.
Some period swimsuits are more absorbent than others, so be sure to review the swimsuit's absorbency before buying. Most period swimsuits can hold between two to three tampons of menstrual flow. Swimsuits with greater absorbency are ideal if you have a heavier period or are spending a long day at the pool. A swimsuit with less absorbency can be used as backup to other period products like tampons or menstrual cups, or you can wear it on days when your flow is light or spotting.
Can you wear a pad with period swimwear?
No, you shouldn't pair a pad with period swimwear. Like period underwear, period swimwear has a built-in absorbent core that acts like a menstrual pad to soak up menstrual flow. If you add a pad to your swimwear, it'll likely feel quite bulky and uncomfortable. Most menstrual pads have wings to secure them to your underwear, making the pad visible outside your swimsuit. For backup protection, you can use a tampon or menstrual cup while wearing period swimwear.
How do you care for period swimwear?
We recommend following the garment's care label to ensure it stays in great condition. High heat can damage spandex (which is a common swimwear material), so it's best to avoid high temperatures in the washer or dryer. To avoid staining your other clothes in the wash, we recommend rinsing the swimwear first before putting it in the washer.
How long can I wear period swimwear?
The swimwear's absorbency will help determine how long you can wear the swimsuit before you'll need to change. The brand will usually communicate the suit's absorbency in terms of tampons' worth of fluid. If you're using additional protection like a tampon or menstrual cup, you can wear period swimwear for longer. Avoid sitting in a wet bathing suit (period swimwear or regular!) for a long time as this can lead to yeast infections.

You might be familiar with sarongs as stylish swimsuit cover-ups, but they actually offer supreme versatility for travelers and have a long, rich cultural history. As early as the 15th century in Southeast Asia, notably Indonesia, both men and women would wrap these rectangular pieces of fabric around their bodies in a skirt-like fashion. In some countries like Tahiti and Fiji, the garment is made from larger pieces of fabric and is known as a pareo, which can be fashioned as a skirt, shawl, or even a dress.
Fashion brands in the West tend to use “sarong” and “pareo” synonymously, especially in terms of swimsuit cover-ups. In this article, we will do the same when referring to this type of garment, which can take on a number of different styles and uses, depending on the size of the fabric and how you prefer to drape, twist, tie, and fashion it.
Sarongs are easy to wear and even easier to pack. Here are 15 of our favorites, with versatile uses ranging from wearing as a skirt or dress to using as a picnic blanket, travel blanket, or shawl in a pinch.
Best Overall
Walker & wade surfside sarong.
Walker & Wade
It’s simple to drape and the coconut shell keeps it in place.
It comes in several beautiful patterns, but you might prefer solid colors.
Sarongs are meant to look effortless, but some can be difficult to secure in place after you’ve found the perfect drape. Not with this one from Walker & Wade. I’ve taken to calling this a “beginner-friendly” sarong, thanks to the coconut shell clasp that makes it easy to adjust and secure around my hips. The rayon is breathable and drapes beautifully; I prefer more coverage, but I also don’t mind adjusting it to allow for a deeper slit on the side because I’m confident it will stay put.
I love my sarong in the coral pattern, but it also comes in other vibrant designs, like tangerine paisley and navy tie-dye. It’s priced well enough to get a couple, and it folds up so nicely that you can tuck it into a carry-on.
The Details: One size | Rayon, with coconut shell adjuster
ViX Dani Short Sarong
ViX Paula Hermanny
This short sarong is easy to style and offers full coverage in a shorter length.
You might prefer more versatility in a sarong.
For those who don’t mind a short sarong but still prefer full coverage, the Dani Short Sarong from ViX is the best of both worlds. The stretchy mesh fabric is lightweight and breathable, and there’s an ample amount of it to style as a wrap skirt or a scarf. It’s wrinkle-free, so you can stow it in a suitcase or beach bag without worry. Choose from black, rambla (an orangey-red pattern), or olivine (olive drab).
The Details: One size | 96 percent polyester, 4 percent elastane
La Blanca Ocean Cover-Up Pareo
The larger swath of fabric offers versatile styling with more coverage.
La Blanca’s line of sarongs and pareos feature vibrant patterns, but no solid colors.
Are you stepping off the beach or a fashion show runway? This beautiful pareo from La Blanca might make it hard for others to tell. The lightweight rayon drapes well, and the larger fabric size leaves the options open for an elegant skirt, shawl, dress (both halter and strapless), or even a travel blanket. It’s perfect for travel because it won’t take up much room in your bag, plus it’s easy to hand wash and line dry as needed.
The Details: One size (women’s 2 to 16) | 100 percent rayon
Best Splurge
Camilla an italian welcome layered short sarong with tie front.
The layers offer full coverage despite the shorter style.
The bold pattern may not be as versatile as simpler styles.
There are many budget-friendly sarongs on this list, but this one could be worth the splurge. This short sarong has layered panels for fuller coverage with plenty of fabric to tie in the front. It’s a simple way to style a swimsuit cover-up, but the bright, Italian-inspired design upgrades this sarong from a mere accessory to the star of your beach or pool ensemble. The design is called An Italian Welcome with a one-piece or bikini to match it, though you could easily style this with a solid swimsuit.
The Details: S/M and L/XL | 34 percent nylon, 34 percent recycled nylon, 32 percent elastane
Best Budget
Old navy sarong skirt.
It adds major style without a huge price tag.
You might prefer a sarong in solid colors.
If you’re new to sarongs or want to expand your current collection without breaking the bank, this one from Old Navy is a great choice. The longer length offers plenty of flexibility for styling with more or less coverage as your personal preference dictates. It even comes in two different sizes — S/M and L/XL — for a truer fit. Choose from five vibrant patterns, though at this price point, it’s tempting to purchase them all, especially since they’re so lightweight and packable.
The Details: S/M and L/XL | 100 percent cotton
Adore Me Nikolia
This sarong offers a bold pop of color while also showing off your bathing suit bottoms.
If you want more opaque coverage in a sarong, look elsewhere.
If you've previously given sarongs the side eye because you don't quite know how to style them, this one from Adore Me takes that part out of the equation. I had the opportunity to try this on and fell in love with the pull-on skirt design — the knot is already at the waistband, so it’s simple to arrange in place on my hips. It comes in black, white, and two bold prints, but the sheer mesh also allows for a peek at a swimsuit beneath. The lettuce-edged hem only adds to the flair of this sarong that’s as easy to wear as it is to pack for your next trip.
The Details: XS to XL | 82 percent recycled polyamide, 18 percent elastane
Best Patterned
Sara joy painted paisley black sarong.
The patterns are simply breathtaking and the fabric feels amazing.
It’s a bit pricier than others on our list, but it’s well worth it for the quality of construction.
Sara Joy’s patterned fabrics are so gorgeous, they’re worthy of being hung on a wall. That didn’t stop me from wrapping this work of art around my hips as it was intended to be, of course. In fact, this is the first time I’ve ever considered wearing a sarong other than as a pool or beach cover-up because there’s ample fabric in the design to securely drape it over my curves as a skirt, shawl, or dress.
The 100 percent cotton design is light and breathable, perfect for hot weather. I’m in love with the painted paisley black sarong — and obsessed with the purple tassels at the edge — but there are other vibrant patterns in Sara Joy’s collection, each more beautiful than the last.
The Details: One size (78 x 45 inches) | 100 percent cotton
Best Fringe
Coco reef entice fringe sarong cover-up.
The fringe offers more coverage without it being too over-the-top.
You might prefer a more subtle style.
Sometimes you need a sarong with an extra bit of flair, and this fringed one from Coco Reef understood the assignment. The long fringe is a playful accent, but it also offers more coverage, too. It comes in two different sizes for truer fitting, plus the fabric is long enough to drape in other ways, like a fun halter top over your bathing suit or shorts. The nylon/spandex construction is comfortable to wear and easy to care for, too; just hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry.
The Details: S/M and L/XL | 85 percent nylon, 15 percent spandex
Most Versatile
Venus ring cover-up skirt.
You can style it in at least five different ways and secure it with a ring clasp.
It’s quite sheer.
Sarongs are versatile in general, but this one takes the cake. This sheer pareo can be styled in five different ways: a mid-length skirt, a mini skirt, a halter dress, a strapless dress, or even a one-shoulder dress. It comes with a large ring to help you secure each of these styles, plus it’s easy to adjust even as you’re wearing it. It comes in four solid colors, including black, white, and two bold floral colors. It’s priced right, so you might consider purchasing a couple of different colors, especially since they won’t take up a ton of room in your bag.
The Details: One size | Imported polyester
Best for Men
La leela men's beach swimwear long cover up.
The lightweight fabric offers flexibility in draping and styling.
You might prefer a shorter garment.
Men wore sarongs in the early days of the garment’s history, and it’s still a fashionable option for them today. This one from La Leela is about the size of a beach towel — and can be used as one, too — so it can be draped around the waist or hips in a variety of ways. The rayon is lightweight yet opaque, and there’s fabric for ample coverage over shorts or trunks. It’s easy to pack and hand wash between uses, so it’s perfect to stow in a bag for travel.
The Details: One size fits most (78 x 42 inches) | Rayon
Monday Swimwear St. Tropez Sarong
Monday Swimwear
The linen has a crinkled texture that looks even better draped.
To keep the crinkles as you like them, dry cleaning is recommended.
Nothing says summer like breezy linen, which is why this sarong from Monday Swimwear is a great staple for your beach and travel wardrobe. The semi-sheer linen has a crinkle texture with a raw edge that adds a casual elegance to any swimsuit or top you pair it with. It’s a one-size-fits-all construction (75 x 45 inches) that allows for full coverage depending on how you drape and style it. It comes in four solid colors — white, black, clementine, and bronze — that will pair well with whatever you choose to wear beneath.
The Details: One size | 100 percent crinkle linen
Best Colors
Skims swim sarong skirt.
It comes in classic and limited edition solid colors to complement a variety of looks.
You might want a shorter or more adjustable sarong.
This swim-friendly sarong from Skims pairs well with a swimsuit, but you’ll find yourself wanting to wear it long after you’ve left the beach or pool. The ankle-length skirt has a high slit that exudes elegance but is super easy to wear, thanks to its pull-on design with the fixed knot at the hip — no awkward adjustments needed here!
The solid colors make it easy to pair with any swimsuit in your wardrobe. Choose from cocoa and onyx, two classic shades, or from a host of bright, limited-edition colors like violet, taffy, snow, and neon green. Unlike other sarongs on our list, this one comes in an inclusive range of sizes for a truer fit.
The Details: XXS to 4XL | 76 percent recycled nylon, 24 percent spandex
Most Sustainable
Megan mae miami sarong.
Megan Mae Miami
It’s made of sustainable material that’s easy to drape and tie.
The shorter length isn’t as versatile as other styles.
Short and sweet is the name of the game with this semi-sheer sarong from Megan Mae Miami. I loved how easy it was to drape and tie despite the shorter silhouette. It’s perfect as a casual swimsuit cover-up, though the hem’s clean edge offers a more polished look. This sarong is designed with ECONYL®, an eco-friendly Italian fabric made from repurposed fishing nets. It comes in 10 different solid colors and two patterns; I tried one on in the dragon fruit shade, and it’s even more vibrant in person.
The Details: One size | ECONYL®
Best Crocheted
Jmp the label havana.
JMP the Label
The handcrafted design is sexy and stylish.
Choose another if you want more coverage or versatility.
Some sarongs offer more coverage, while others offer more style. This crocheted sarong studded with pearl beads from JMP the Label is definitely in the latter category. Make no mistake — this is the smallest sarong on our list in terms of coverage, but it cuts out the guesswork with styling. A simple knot at the hip was all it took to transform my boring solid tank into something tropical. The crocheted nylon material does have a bit of spandex for stretch, which is ideal for long-term wear. It can easily be rolled up and tucked in a pocket, but be careful of getting it snagged on other things in your bag or carry-on.
The Details: One size | 85 percent nylon, 15 percent spandex
Best Water-resistant
Uv skinz women's sun wrap.
It’s chlorine- and saltwater-resistant, plus it has UPF 50+ protection.
It’s heavier and more opaque than other sarongs on our list.
All of the sarongs on our list can be worn as a swimsuit cover-up, but how about one that you can actually wear in the water? This sun wrap from UV Skinz is a swim-friendly take on a sarong/pareo wrap, thanks to fabric that’s chlorine- and saltwater-resistant. The fabric is heftier than others on our list but is still breathable. It’s long enough to be worn as a skirt, wrap, or a shawl, plus it comes in regular and plus sizes for a better fit. It gets major bonus points for having built-in UPF 50+ protection, which is perfect for longer days in the summer sun.
The Details: Regular and plus | Certified UPF 50+ pique knit fabric
Tips for Buying Sarongs
Check the dimensions.
Sarongs are often listed as one size fits all (or most), but it’s important to check the actual dimensions of the fabric. You’ll want it to fit around your hips first and foremost, but you’ll also want to see how much extra fabric there is to determine the sarong’s versatility for styling.
While many of the sarongs on our list roll or fold up quite compactly for travel, know that the larger, more versatile sarongs will take up a bit more room in your suitcase or carry-on.
Think about the materials
Sarongs come in a wide variety of materials, from sheer to opaque and from light as a feather to hefty enough for a beach blanket. Your style and preference matter most, particularly when it comes to how much coverage you want from a sarong. But when it comes to packing one (or a few) for a trip, think lightweight, wrinkle-free, and easy to wash — bonus points for those that are water-resistant so you can wear them in the surf or by the pool.
Many sarongs are one size fits all/most, so you might not have much of a choice. But it helps to start with measuring your own hips. Once you have that measurement, compare it to the dimensions of the sarong. You’ll want enough material so you can drape and tie it off for the style and amount of coverage you prefer. Keep in mind that more versatile sarongs that can be used as dresses and shawls will have extra feet of material, allowing for the utmost flexibility.
Many of the sarongs on this list are meant to be worn as bathing suit cover-ups, but that’s not the only way to style them. You can also wear sarongs over a bodysuit, shorts, or pants, including leggings and yoga pants. Longer sarongs can be draped and tied as halter dresses, though depending on the sheerness of the fabric, you might still consider wearing shorts or leggings underneath.
Why Trust Travel + Leisure
A long-time sarong devotee, Barbara Bellesi Zito couldn’t help but get wrapped up in her research for this story. In addition to scouring dozens of retailers and online reviews for the best sarongs, she also tested quite a few in person. She looks forward to wearing them as bathing suit cover-ups poolside and surfside this summer.
