Specifications Definitions

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) - Is the maximum permissible loaded weight of your motor home and any towed trailer or towed vehicle. Actual GCWR of this vehicle may be limited by the sum of the GVWR and the installed hitch receiver maximum capacity rating; see hitch rating label for detail.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) - is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by each axle.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s), including full fuel, all fl uids and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, passengers, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before fi lling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Actual towing capacity is dependent upon your particular loading and towing circumstances, which includes the GVWR, GAWR and GCWR as well as adequate trailer brakes. Please refer to the Operator's Manual of your vehicle for further towing information.

These days portable power stations are an increasingly popular alternative to loud, polluting gas generators, and the Goal Zero Yeti PRO 4000 is among the most RV-ready around. What to consider when shopping for the best RV generators

An RV generator is obviously an investment, but also in terms of your comfort and safety when you’re relying on it to keep the lights on. With this in mind, here are a few key considerations when choosing which is right for you.

Power output

If it’s not powerful enough to suit your needs, what’s the point? A generator’s “rated” or “running” wattage indicates how much it is capable of producing under normal conditions, with the “peak” or “surge” wattage indicating the extent to which it can max out in order to provide for the momentary usage spikes that occur when starting an appliance, power tool, or air conditioner. Be sure that these numbers will deliver on your power needs.

With an RV generator, you generally need something that will produce a minimum of 1,500W to power the air conditioner plus a few other essentials, or the entire RV without the air conditioner. With that as your floor, you typically won’t need more than 3,500-4,000W unless you have a particularly power-thirsty RV.

Fuel type

American retirees who spend all or part of their year in RVs tell us about their travels and their finances

Many Americans drop anchor in retirement, settling down near the beach or their adult children. Others leave their old latitudes behind and set sail on the highways.

Retirees who give up their permanent homes might save money. But many keep their houses, which means the cost of maintaining an RV can weigh on their budgets. Here's what life looks like for a few who have chosen this lifestyle.

Jenell Jones, 63: Traveling the U.S. in an RV

The retired deputy sheriff sold her Texas home about five years ago. She enjoyed gardening at home, but felt tied down. “I wanted to get off the couch and have an adventure,” she said.

Annual Spending: $30,000

A divorcée with an adult daughter, she initially had doubts about solo RV travel, but reminded herself that 25 years in law enforcement more than equipped her for the challenge. Good health, savings and low expenses have helped make her wanderlust possible.

Jenell Jones

Jones gets a roughly $7,000 monthly pension and has about $180,000 in savings. She spends close to $2,500 a month, almost half of which goes toward fuel for her 36-foot Tiffin Open Road RV and the Nissan compact car she tows behind it.

So passionate is Jones about the RV life that she runs Wandering Individuals Network, an RV club with about 300 solo travelers. She spends about 10 hours a week organizing club trips and events and interacting with its members, a gig that pays about $24,000 a year.

Jones advises RV rookies to be patient, problem-solving and flexible. She has managed flat tires at busy intersections, gotten sent down dirt roads by a GPS on the fritz and once dodged a moose. RVers should have good contacts in multiple states, she said. Finding a doctor on relatively short notice when you are a new patient isn’t always easy, Jones said.

Peggy and John Middleton, 68 and 70: Springfield, Mo. / Traveling in an RV

The couple is carrying on a family tradition of exploring the U.S. with a travel trailer for months at a time. About six years ago the retired nurses began restoring the Airstream in their spare time, spending about $20,000 to make it functional again, Peggy said.

Annual Spending: $120,000

John retired last year and the couple knew it was time for their dream trip—a three-month, 14,000-mile journey through Canada and Alaska. They hit the road this May. Taking turns at the wheel, the Middletons relied on maps when GPS didn’t work and tapped online RV groups for tips on where to visit.

The trip, which cost about $15,000 in fuel, campgrounds, groceries and sightseeing excursions, was largely unscheduled. “That’s the beauty of being retired and traveling around in an RV. If you find a place you like, you can just stay a few more days,” said Peggy.

The Middletons faced tough decisions when they learned Peggy’s sister died about two months into the trip, and days later heard their barn back in Missouri had caught fire. Their first instinct was to rush home, but then realized there was nothing urgent to return to, especially since the memorial for Peggy’s sister would be held several months later. They stayed on the road.

The Middletons attend virtual church services and Peggy logs on to her weekly Bible study group when cellphone service is available. This, along with calls and social-media messages with their three daughters, helps them stay connected to what matters most, they said.

Years of retirement planning have allowed the Middletons to travel with their RV when they wish, they said. They have about $2 million in retirement savings, half of which is managed by John and the rest by an investment firm. About 95% of their savings is in stocks.

Their home is paid off and they pay monthly credit-card bills in full. About half of their $10,000 monthly spending goes to expenses related to their 40-acre property, which they have no plans to sell. They receive about $4,500 a month in total from Social Security.

See inside the prototype for a new $24,000 Tesla Cybertruck camper attachment

A startup is looking to sell a $24,000 camper extension for the Tesla Cybertruck.
Space Campers has been collecting $100 refundable reservations since May 2022.
Tesla has set its delivery event for the Cybertruck for November 30 after several delays.

The Tesla Cybertruck is only weeks away from its scheduled delivery event — and some companies have already begun building accessories for the electric-pickup truck.

Lee Wilkerson, the founder of Space Campers , told Insider he was inspired to launch his company shortly after Elon Musk announced Tesla would be building the Cybertruck in 2019. Wilkerson said he saw an opportunity to build something around the versatility of the Cybertruck.

"The cool thing about the Cybertruck is the fact that they will make one truck body shape and you won't have to juggle any submodels," Wilkerson said. "Once I started thinking about building it, I couldn't get the idea out of my head," he added.

Take a look inside the camper designed to seamlessly attach to the bed of the Cybertruck. The company has a physical prototype, but the pictures of the camper attached to the Cybertruck are digital renderings.

Space Campers started taking $100 refundable reservations for its wedge-style camper in May 2022.

The company would not comment on how many reservations it had received to date.

"We've had a lot of interest, but we're trying to keep our numbers down right now," Wilkerson said. "We haven't promoted this too much because we're still sitting on standby a bit till we see more clarity on the truck. I think on November 30, a lot of things will be cleared up."

Wilkerson, a mechanical engineer who has worked at several startups, said the company has about five internal team members and has partnered with outside manufacturers on the project.

The camper, which is currently listed for $24,000, is designed so that it can be set up in moments with the switch of a button.

It attaches to the bed of the truck with clamps — and when it's not in use, Cybertruck owners can still have full access to the bed of their truck, according to the prototype.

The camper is even designed to travel with Tesla owners on a day-to-day basis without too much of an impact on the vehicle's range.

At its peak, the ceiling of the camper reaches eight feet, according to the specs for the prototype.

The lowest portion of the camper clocks in at about six feet, according to the company.

The camper comes with a bed that can comfortably sleep two people.

The memory foam mattress can also be folded to make a couch-structure, according to the specs for the prototype.

The bed can be extended so users can enjoy more of the scenery.

"The best thing about it, is that pretty much every feature has multiple uses," Wilkerson said.

For example, the bed platform can be taken out of the camper and used as a table, according to the company.

Though users might have to bring along their own foldable camp chairs.

The bed's platform can also serve as a projector.

The company said the screen can either be tucked inside the camper or used in the open air.

Similarly, an extension that's attached to the bed can be made into a bench and the area can become a makeshift office space.

The camper could be perfect for remote workers.

Space Campers also offers the option to further accessorize the camper.

The company says a kitchen can be built into the storage compartments in the camper. Space Campers also sells a portable toilet and shower extension, according to its site.

Space Campers isn't the only company to capitalize on the hype around the Cybertruck.

In 2021, Insider's Brittany Chang reported that tech company Stream had started making camper attachments for the EV and the company had already hit $150 million in preorders for its CyberLandr, a $55,000 attachment.

Stream has not published any updated preorder numbers since.

Space Camper's founder said designing the camper has been the easy part, at least when compared to some of the unpredictability related to the Cybertruck release.

Since Musk first announced the Cybertruck, the company has delayed its release at least seven times, including two years of delays. While Wilkerson said Space Campers has a contact at Tesla, the EV maker has not officially shared any specs with the company.

"It's a little bit of this game of up and down with all the Cybertruck news," Wilkerson said. "We want to have all our ducks in a row, but we're waiting to turn the ramp up back on until Cybertruck is definite."

A spokesperson for Space Campers told Insider the company anticipates it will ramp up production in the second quarter of 2024.

Space Campers also faces some uncertainty with getting access to the Cybertruck once it's released. Over 1.5 million people have put down a $100 reservation fee for the Tesla truck as of last year, according to Electrek . And even people who ordered the truck within an hour of Musk's first announcement of the EV have told Insider they have tens of thousands of people in front of them, at least according to an online queue estimator.

Wilkerson said the company is not one of the early reservation holders, but has befriended some people who have access.

For his part, Musk has said the ramp up in Cybertruck deliveries might be slow.

During Tesla's earnings call last month, the CEO said it will require a "staggering" amount of work to scale production of the vehicle due to its "newness." The billionaire said the company hopes to produce about a quarter million Cybertrucks per year — but likely not until 2025.
