Not to be dramatic, but losing a passport or other travel documents can be a huge nightmare while traveling. To safeguard passports, credit cards, and boarding passes, we recommend using a passport wallet to keep everything organized in one spot.

We researched and tested 16 passport wallets in various sizes and materials to recommend options that fit the needs of all types of travelers. We paid close attention to traits like capacity, durability, functionality, and organizational features to ensure smooth travels. Keep reading to find out which ones surpassed our expectations during testing.

Best Overall

Leatherology zip around travel wallet.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The exterior zipper adds an extra layer of security to keep passports and credit cards safe while traveling.

It might be too large to fit in a smaller purse or sling bag .

While most passport wallets we tested have a snap-closure, this one has a zipper that wraps around the entirety of the wallet to ensure a passport and other travel essentials remain safely tucked away in transit. The versatile design is so spacious that it can easily hold multiple passports, up to eight credit cards, cash, and coins without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry. There’s even an exterior pocket for boarding passes so you don’t have to open up the wallet for access. It might be too big to fit in small purses, but the sleek leather look and larger size makes it possible to carry it as a clutch or place into a backpack or tote bag, if needed.

Bellroy RFID Travel Wallet

The wallet easily fits in a back pocket.

The wallet will be bigger if it’s packed full and may not fit then.

Minimalist travelers will appreciate the sleek and simple design of Bellroy’s RFID Travel Wallet. We dubbed it our favorite slim option since it can fit virtually anywhere, including in a back pocket (just be sure to take it out of your pocket before going through security). Made out of a soft and durable leather, it never scuffed or scratched while traveling and it looks premium on the outside. The wallet has pockets for a passport, cash, credit cards, and plane tickets, and we love that there aren’t so many pockets that items get disorganized or lost in the void. The best part is that it opens like a standard wallet so we could quickly grab our passports and credit cards while traveling.

Best for Families

Valante travel document organizer.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

It has pockets for multiple passports, plane tickets, and cash.

The large capacity might be too big for solo travelers.

Family travel can be hectic, so we recommend this spacious wallet that can keep all of your family’s important documents in one safe spot. Designed to store multiple passports, credit cards, plane tickets, and more, there are tons of pockets to place items neatly. There’s even a key leash, two zippered pockets, a pen holder, and two designated slip pockets for boarding passes in the front of the wallet. Because the wallet is on the larger side, we love that it comes with a wrist strap to hold onto it while going through customs or the TSA security line. The size might be too large for solo or minimalist travelers, but it works perfectly for staying organized while traveling in groups.

Best Faux Leather

Melsbrinna waterproof rfid-blocking travel wallet.

The PU leather material feels just as soft and durable as regular leather.

The clear plastic window pockets could scratch over time.

Similar to our overall pick, this passport wallet isn’t made out of genuine leather, but it has the same premium look and feel. Made with layers of PU leather, there is a piece of RFID-blocking fabric sandwiched between the material for extra protection while traveling with chipped documents. This sleek wallet comes with all of the standard pockets for a passport, credit cards, and boarding passes, but there were several other features that made it stand out in testing. We are big fans of the two SIM card slots and two plastic window pockets for extra organization for international travelers. Our only concern is that the plastic might scratch or wear over time, but it depends on how often you use the wallet and care for it.

Best Color Options

Lucrin geneva passport travel wallet.

The sleek and spacious wallet comes in over 21 colors and five leather texture options.

The premium materials come with a higher price.

One of our favorite leather passport wallets we tested, this one from Lucrin impressed us with a variety of color and texture options to please any and all travelers. There are over two dozen color options available and five different leather textures to choose from, including smooth, granulated, square granulated, vegetable tanned, and crocodile patterned. Once you narrow down your desired color and texture, we’re confident travelers will love the luxurious feel of the premium leather and generous capacity of the snap-closure wallet. It features several slip pockets, thirteen credit card slots, and a large zippered pocket for storing smaller items like coins or a pen. While the price is on the higher end, we believe you get what you pay for with this made-to-last passport wallet.

Best Crossbody

Pacsafe rfidsafe v150 rfid-blocking compact organizer.

It comes with a removable strap to keep the wallet attached to your body.

The strap isn’t adjustable.

A lost passport can put a huge damper on a trip, so we recommend the Pacsafe RFID-blocking wallet with a removable crossbody strap for keeping your travel documents attached at the hip (literally). You can wear the strap across your body, on your wrist, or through a belt to ensure the wallet is securely fastened on the go. Besides the ability to wear the wallet as a purse, we love all of the slip and zippered interior pockets for a passport, credit cards, cash, or coins, which will keep you plenty organized. The nylon material is water-resistant with a thick and durable feel, so we expect this wallet will stand the test of time.

Best Budget

Tigari passport and vaccine card holder.

The high-quality materials and functionality of this wallet are unbeatable for the low price.

It feels a bit big to carry around.

If you’re trying to build a luggage capsule for traveling, this budget-friendly passport wallet makes a useful addition for all types of travelers. Although the wallet comes at a lower price, it doesn’t lack durability and quality of materials. The PU faux leather case comes in a variety of neutral and bright colors, and it has sleek embossed wording on the front. The case opens up to reveal tons of organizational features for one passport, four credit cards, two SIM cards, and a slip pocket for cash. All of the pockets make it easy to grab travel documents quickly and the larger case keeps everything safe from damage during transit. The wallet is on the bigger side, so it might not fit in smaller purses , but it should fit in a backpack or personal item without any issues.

Best Organization

Baphity genuine leather passport holder.

There are a variety of slip and zippered pockets available.

The card slots can be tight at first.

This genuine leather passport wallet is the best option for travelers prioritizing organization. Designed to store a passport, vaccine card, cash coins, boarding passes, and SIM cards, the wallet is bursting with pockets to efficiently organize items. After we filled it with travel documents, we were impressed with how slim and compact the wallet remained. The leather material is high-quality and durable, and we think the wallet has an excellent value for the construction and price point. We ran into slight issues with the card slots being a bit tight at first, but the material loosened up with more use, which made it easier to pull the cards in and out quickly.

Best AirTag-compatible

Normest airtag travel wallet.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

The wallet has a designated pocket for storing an Apple AirTag for tracking and locating.

It has a smaller capacity.

Tracking devices can be a game-changer if your luggage gets lost, so we recommend this AirTag-compatible wallet. While the AirTag is sold separately, the wallet does come with a secure slot on the outside to discreetly store the tracking device. The genuine leather material is sleek and soft, and the wallet has a slim design that makes it easy to place it in a back pocket or small bag. It can fit a passport, three credit cards, and some cash before running out of room, so if you’re looking for a spacious wallet, this isn’t the best option. However, sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so this is a great option for AirTag enthusiasts .

Most Stylish

Away the passport wallet.

It's compact enough to fit inside any sling bag, fanny pack, and even some pant pockets.

It's a bit small and really only fits your passport and a few cards.

This compact passport wallet has a slip pocket on the front for a passport and the side opens up to reveal several credit card slots and a bit of room for cash or a plane ticket. While the side pocket doesn't have a zipper, it is tight enough that all of our items felt secure and nothing moved when we shook the wallet vigorously. We love that the small size means you can fit this passport wallet in any bag and even some pant or coat pockets for quick access. We used this throughout six flights and it was never a hassle to get the passport in and out of the case, even while in a hurry. The black leather is very sleek and feels high-quality and hasn't scratched at all throughout our months of travels. For Away fans looking for a passport wallet to complete your matching style set, this is an absolute essential.

Other Passport Wallets We Liked

There were several passport wallets that almost made our list of winners, but we ran into some slight issues during testing.

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet : The wallet has a simple and functional design, but the price is fairly high for the smaller capacity and lack of extra organizational features.

Walnew AirTag Passport Holder : It has plenty of room to fit all necessary travel documents and it comes with an AirTag leash, but we liked that the other tracking device-compatible wallet we tried holds the tracker more discreetly.

We researched and selected 16 passport wallets to test out while traveling and in everyday scenarios. From busy TSA security lines to shopping and sightseeing, we made sure the best wallets make it easy to pull out passports, credit cards, IDs, and cash when you’re in a hurry. We paid close attention to the capacity and noted how efficient the organizational features are for storing essential travel documents. Since travel can take a toll on luggage and accessories, we judged the overall quality of the materials and stitchwork to gauge the longevity of each wallet.

Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Check the dimensions of the wallet.

Passports from around the world feature the same design and size, but you’ll still want to make sure a passport wallet fits your size needs. Some wallets are designed to just be slightly larger than a passport and others will be large enough to fit the length of a boarding pass. It depends on the space you’ll have in a bag, pocket, or backpack, so you’ll want to consider how to store the wallet while traveling before making the purchase.

Decide how many compartments you need

Passport wallets are typically designed to hold a passport and a few credit cards, but some are equipped with more organizational features. The bigger the wallet, the more room and storage options there will be for multiple passports, credit cards, cash, and boarding passes. Extra features to look for include interior zippered pockets for coins, SIM card holders, and plastic window sleeves for IDs or vaccine cards.

Look for additional security features

Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you may want to consider getting a passport wallet with an AirTag holder (AirTags are usually sold separately) to track the wallet in case it goes missing. Other security measures can include a wrap-around zipper to ensure passports and credit cards are secure and layers of RFID-blocking fabric to prevent cyber pick-pocketing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Security and customs lines can be stressful, so it’s important to have your passport and other necessary documents out of any wallets or cases and ready to go. This will save time and make it easier to hand the documents over to an agent to speed up the process and eliminate unnecessary stress while traveling.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is technology commonly used in credit cards and passports to locate information and data quickly. It is possible to steal data from RFID documents, but there are some passport wallets with a fabric layer to block radio waves from transmitting. Although it’s uncommon for data to be stolen via RFID, the layer of fabric offers extra security and is designed to prevent criminals from taking information while traveling.

11 Best Passport Holders & Wallets for Traveling Men

11 Best Passport Holders & Wallets for Traveling Men

If there is one thing I hate when traveling, it’s worrying about my valuables.

I’m already stressed about getting to the airport on time, getting through security, and finding my gate. The last thing I want to worry about is whether I’ve misplaced my passport or ticket, or if my wallet fell out of my coat pocket while I was undressing and redressing at the TSA checkpoint.

But everything changed for me when I discovered passport wallets.

In 2020, my beautiful, brilliant wife gave me the gift I have now come to love—and rely on heavily when traveling.

  • Sized up . Passport wallets are larger than regular wallets because they’re sized to fit your passport along with other essentials. They’ll take up more space in your pocket—making them harder to lose, though an easier target for pickpockets. Be aware of this when traveling and keep it tucked securely out of sight until you’re going through airport security.
  • Designed just right . The passport wallet’s design ensures they have enough space to accommodate all your travel documents, cash, cards, and IDs in one place. It’s a true game-changer for any guy who travels often and needs a handy, convenient place to store all their most valuable items.
  • Materials galore . While leather is the most common option for wallets, there are a wide range of materials to choose from—including vegan leather, synthetic fabrics, even ballistic nylon and carbon fiber. Whatever your travel needs and style, you can find a passport wallet to match.

In my passport wallet, I can keep everything: cash, cards, tickets, passports, IDs, parking receipts, and all the other basic valuable essentials for my trip. It’s all stored in one safe, easy-to-keep-track-of place, and I never have to worry about losing anything, ever.

After falling in love with this passport wallet, I made it my mission to find the absolute best of the best. I dove deep into the internet, researching dozens of passport wallets, testing every one I could get my hands on, and combing through hundreds of reviews.

All of this has led me to put together the list below of the passport wallets I strongly recommend for every traveling man.

Keep your belongings safe from data theft, rain, mud, and pickpockets in this ultra-slim, ultra-tough passport wallet. Thanks to its technical fabric, it’s waterproof and tough as nails.

Pioneer Passport Wallet

Keep your loadout slim and sleek with this gorgeous—but insanely durable—passport wallet. Made from 10XD, 3XD, or Baby Ballistic nylon, it’s water- and dirt-resistant and offers amazing protection for your valuables.

There’s also built-in RFID blocking so you can trust your credit card data will always be safe everywhere you go.

With space for up to 8 cards, your passport, tickets, receipts, and folded bills, it’s very deserving of being my #1 pick.

tomtoc RFID Blocking Passport Holder Wallet

Traveling with a bigger crowd (aka, your family)? This passport wallet holds up to six passports, four credit cards or IDs, and cash, all of which are guarded by an immensely resilient and water-resistant 840-denier Cordura nylon exterior.

In addition to built-in RFID blocking, it’s also got a smart SIM card holder, ejector pin for easy swapping of your phone SIMs, a travel pen, and an AirTag slot .

Smythson Passport Cover

Instead of packing everything into a wallet, why not opt for a simple, reliable passport cover? This is as minimalist as it gets: one slip-cover pocket to stash your passport, the other to house your tickets, boarding pass, cash, and a card or two.

The black crossgrain calf leather exterior is eye-catching and unique, and the smooth calf leather interior will prevent scuffs, scrapes, and scratches.

Billy Kirk No. 153 Passport Wallet

Keep it simple and beautiful with this handsome vegetable-tanned, full grain leather wallet. Made in New Jersey, it’s a work of art that will grow more beautiful as it patinates.

Packing for adventure travel? This is the wallet I recommend for you.

It’s got everything you could need: eight dedicated card slots, an elastic mesh pocket for your tickets and receipts, a flapped pocket for coins and keys, two zip compartments that can store multiple passports, a cash pocket, hidden stash pocket, RFID blocking, and a quick-access front pocket—all wrapped up in a tough, wear-resistant recycled synthetic fabric.

Tanner Goods Travel Wallet

I recommend this for the business traveler who wants a more elegant solution for storing their valuables.

The 3.5-ounce English bridle leather gives it a heavy-duty construction without adding unnecessary heft.

Harber London Passport Wallet

Buttery-soft premium full grain leather, handmade quality, and a convenient design: what’s not to love?

The two-tone design gives it a pop of color and character, not to mention adds durability with reinforced stitching.

Away The Passport Wallet

Say goodbye to the old, outdated billfold-style wallet, and hello to a no-fold design.

This wallet is designed with four interior card slots for easy organization, a passport-sized pocket, and room enough to stash a few folded bills.

The lack of fold means the leather won’t crack or wear out, but will only grow more beautiful as it develops a glorious patina over years of use.

On my cruise I especially liked being able to instantly retrieve my cabin card from the viewable pouch on the front of the wallet. The card was my ID for various events so I was constantly needing to retrieve it. The viewable pouch is a safe, secure, and accessible place for cards you have to regularly retrieve.

Amazon Buyers Reviews

I have used such pockets for years and years but always traveling when “away” for long periods of time. And then I saw the HERO Neck Wallet. A reality check! It’s equally logical in day-to-day life. Wallet & phone are now in one place and not stuffed in a pocket. I’m in my 80s and while my balance is good, I make it a habit to keep my hands free when walking so that I can reach in an emergency. The neck bag, at such times, is easily out of the way but safe. And it is a product really well done. Heartily recommended.

This is a really nice neck wallet. It has a lot of room, but is a tad bigger that what I was expecting. I haven’t taken my trip yet, but I did try it on and it lays pretty flat and doesn’t seem to be gawky or too noticeable under my clothing. The color is vibrant and it seems well made. I’m happy that it is RFID blocking. The reviews I read about it helped make my decision about getting it. Thanks.

This is a very well made and useful product. I just returned from Wisconsin, where i rode my recumbent tricycle for over two weeks in hot, hilly conditions. When riding in a reclined position, things tend to fall out my pockets; this pouch was a perfect solution. The product performed flawlessly and was very comfortable. The perforated backing always felt dry, even while i was perspiring profusely. The large pocket held my wallet and keys and the small zippered pocket at the top was a perfect fit for my flip phone and there was still room for “other stuff”

Now, let’s dive into the selection of the top 12 budget-friendly travel wallets designed to keep your passport and tickets safe and sound!

5 Important Factors to Consider When Buying A Travel Wallet for Passport and Tickets

When it comes to choosing the right travel wallet for your passports and tickets, it can be a bit overwhelming with so many options available. To make your decision easier, I’ve identified the important factors that can truly impact your travel experience. Think of these factors as your trusty guides to help you find the perfect travel wallet, ensuring your journey remains hassle-free and secure. So, let’s dive into these key considerations to simplify your search for the ideal travel companion.

Size and Capacity

The size and capacity of a travel wallet for passports and tickets are crucial factors to consider when purchasing one. A travel wallet should have enough space to hold your important travel documents, such as your passport, boarding pass, and ID cards while remaining compact and easy to carry. It should also have designated slots or compartments to keep your tickets organized and easily accessible.

A wallet that is too small may not be able to accommodate all your documents, while one that is too large may be bulky and inconvenient to carry around. Therefore, it is important to choose a travel wallet that strikes the right balance between size and capacity, ensuring that it meets your needs without being overly cumbersome.

Material and Durability

To Ensure Your Travel Wallet Lasts a Long Time, You Should Think About the Material and Durability

Additionally, check for reinforced stitching and sturdy zippers to ensure that the wallet can withstand frequent use and handling. It is also important to consider water resistance, as this can protect your important documents from accidental spills or unexpected rain.

Finally, pay attention to customer reviews and ratings to get an idea of the wallet’s durability and longevity. By considering these factors, you can find a travel wallet that will securely hold your passport and tickets for many trips to come.

Security Features

One important factor to consider when purchasing a travel wallet for passports and tickets is the inclusion of security features. These features are designed to protect your important travel documents from loss, theft, or unauthorized access. Look for wallets that have RFID-blocking technology, which prevents the scanning of your passport and credit card information by potential thieves.

Additionally, consider wallets with hidden compartments or zippered closures to keep your documents secure. Some travel wallets also come with a detachable lanyard or wrist strap, allowing you to keep your wallet close and minimize the risk of misplacing it. Security features are essential for peace of mind during your travels, so make sure to prioritize them when choosing a travel wallet.

Ease of Access

Make Sure the Compartments in Your Wallet Are Easy to Get To, so You Don’t Struggle to Find Your Documents

These compartments should be easily accessible and allow you to retrieve your documents without any hassle or fumbling. Additionally, consider the closure mechanism of the wallet. A zipper closure or a snap button can provide added security while ensuring easy access. Avoid wallets with complicated closures that may slow you down when you need to present your passport or boarding pass.

Organization and Compartments

When selecting a travel wallet for passport and ticket storage, it is essential to prioritize the organization and compartmentalization of the wallet. A well-organized travel wallet can make your journey smoother and more efficient by keeping all your important travel documents in one place.

Look for a wallet that offers multiple compartments and pockets specifically designed for passports, tickets, boarding passes, and other essential documents. This will help you keep everything easily accessible and prevent any misplacement or loss of important items.

Additionally, consider the size and layout of the compartments to ensure they can accommodate your specific needs. Some wallets even offer designated slots for credit cards, currency, and a pen, providing further convenience and organization.

In recent years, the paperwork required to jet from one country to another has increased dramatically, whether it’s paperwork relating to tests and vaccinations or additional visas.

Luckily, some of our favourite travel accessory brands have risen to the challenge, producing fantastic travel wallets that not only have room for all the essentials, but look incredibly stylish and reduce the risk of identity fraud, too.

We strongly recommend opting for RFID (radio-frequency identification) wallets, which use nickel and copper-coated material (usually polyester) to reduce the risk of identity fraud, by blocking the electromagnetic signals emitted from your bank cards.

Take the time to think about what you’re going to be using your wallet for – if you’re going to fill it to capacity, we’d recommend opting for a zip closure, but if easy access is a priority, don’t write off the humble magnet or press-stud closure.

We’re also huge fans of wallets that have clamshell openings – ones that open fully, like a book, rather than requiring you to extract your essentials through tiny openings.

How we tested.

Our recent trips involved a lot of paperwork (including visas, proof of negative Covid tests and currency in various denominations) as well as essentials such as our passport (obviously), boarding passes and bank cards. We had plenty of opportunities to put these wallets to the test during these trips, whether it was before we’d even entered the airport (in India, a recent destination, all passengers must produce airplane tickets before being allowed into the terminal) or at visa checkpoints. In a nutshell? We truly put these wallets through their paces, and they all passed with flying colours. That said, certain ones have been clearly designed with specific additional purposes in mind, which is why we’ve highlighted the areas in which they excel below. Happy travels!

The best travel wallets for 2023 are:

  • Best overall – Ted Baker safar art print travel wallet: £75, Tedbaker.com
  • Best compact travel wallet – Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet: £32, Jack-wolfskin.co.uk
  • Best for simplicity – Keela travel ID wallet: £24.95, Keelaoutdoors.com
  • Best large travel wallet – House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet: £29.99, Houseofdisaster.com
  • Best RFID wallet – Go Travel RFID organiser: £19.99, Go.travel

Ted Baker safar art print travel wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : Overall
  • Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyurethane; lining: 100 per cent cotton

First things first – yes, this wallet is larger than most, but it’s surprisingly slim, and every millimetre of space has been put to good use. In other words, it’s large enough to hold all the essentials for a trip abroad – passports, paperwork, medical certificates and currency – but compact enough to prevent it being cumbersome.

It’s also one of the most stylish travel wallets we’ve come across, thanks to the abstract floral design featured on its hard-wearing (but surprisingly leather-like) polyurethane exterior.

An internal, removeable card holder, a wide zippered purse and plentiful pockets meant there was more than enough room for our various travel accoutrements, and we were impressed by the ultra-strong magnetic closure.

Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : For bells and whistles
  • Material : Nickel- and copper-coated polyester

This wallet has seven card pockets, including one covered by transparent plastic. Our advice? Use this one to stash ID cards, such as a driver’s licence – you can flash it without having to remove it from the wallet.

Larger slip pockets – placed beneath the smaller ones – are ideal for boarding passes and passports, and we used the pocket made from mesh to stash our iPhone. It’s another RFID wallet, which relies on nickel- and copper-coated polyester fabric to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Call us fickle but we loved the choice of four colourways, too (we recommend the merlot-red “plum” hue).

Fjällräven kånken travel wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : For easy access
  • Material : 65 per cent polyester, 35 per cent cotton

How Fjällräven managed to squeeze so many pockets into such a compact wallet, we’ll never know. We had plenty of room for our passport, vaccination documentation and foreign currency, which we placed inside the wallet, while we kept our boarding passes in the extra-wide exterior pocket on the wallet’s rear.

There’s an incredible sense of toughness to the kånken (thanks, partly, to the water-resistant G-1000 fabric), and we loved how the concertina-like strip of material between the wallet’s two halves meant we could open the wallet fully – no fumbling around through narrow openings to extricate essential documents.

Keela travel ID wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : For simplicity
  • Material : Unspecified

To begin with, we were sceptical about the simplicity of this wallet but we’re now total converts. In recent years, partly because of the extra documentation required for travel (whether it’s vaccination paperwork or visa forms, much of which isn’t required to check in for a flight) we’ve taken to carrying our passport in a separate wallet, simply so we can produce it without riffling through irrelevant paperwork. Our top tip? Before entering the airport, place your boarding pass and passport in this transparent wallet (which slips neatly under jackets or T-shirts) and simply whip them out as and when required.

Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet

best travel wallets

  • Best : Compact travel wallet
  • Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyamide; lining: 100 per cent polyester

We love the name of this RFID wallet – if only because it brings to mind an accessory stuffed with thick wads of cash. That wasn’t the case where we were concerned, to be clear, although we did find the extra-wide pocket useful for quickly stashing a wad of 1,000 Indian Rupees (don’t get excited – this equates to just £9.89).

It’s one of the smallest travel wallets in our selection, but that’s precisely why we love it – although it might not be large enough for your passport, it’s got more than enough room for currency, boarding passes and paperwork, and its size means it slips easily into the smallest of pockets.

Katie Loxton travel wallet

best travel wallets

  • Best : For style
  • Material : Polyurethane

This is definitely one of the simpler travel wallets, but it’s perfect for the essentials – we used it for our passport and boarding passes, which were kept secure courtesy of the press-stud fastening. Subtle gold accents – namely the press stud and the lettering spelling out ‘Yay for vacay’ – earns extra points in the style stakes, and there are options to have the wallet personalised, too. We were seriously impressed to find that it was made from PU (polyurethane), given its leather-like feel.

Go Travel RFID organiser

best travel wallets

  • Best : RFID wallet
  • Material : Polyester

Identity theft is no longer an invisible threat that brands merely use to convince us to part with extra cash. Well, some brands might still take this approach, but Go Travel, which is known for its top-quality RFID travel wallets, definitely isn’t one of them, and this wallet is a case in point. Despite its slimline design, it’s stuffed with pockets, to hold everything from passports (our rigorous testing proved that there was more than enough room for four) to boarding passes, which we placed in the extra-wide pockets beneath the ones designed to hold passports. Unlike with similar products, the RFID tech has added minimal bulk, and its clamshell design, with zips that opened on three sides of each half of the wallet, meant refreshingly easy access to the contents.

House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : Large travel wallet
  • Material : Vegan-friendly ‘leather’, faux dalmation fur, cotton lining

We were instantly smitten with the flash of pink (courtesy of the strap) against the monochrome animal print, but the interior of this wallet was just as impressive. A zippered pocket was perfect for stashing loose change, while we used the shallow card pockets for hotel room keys and business cards. The highlight, however, was the main compartment, with its four dividers, clearly labelled (in chic gold font, nonetheless) to indicate separate pockets for passports, tickets, documents and ‘other’. Full disclosure, we were initially concerned by its larger size, but a trip to India, which involved multiple internal flights (read: lots of tickets), visas and vaccination documentation meant we easily filled this particular wallet.

The verdict: Travel wallets

We’ll be honest – we’d book a holiday just for the opportunity to show off Ted Baker’s safar art print travel wallet , which is an absolute essential for stylish jet-setters who like to keep all their travel essentials in one place. Fjällräven’s kånken travel wallet is a sturdy, stylish piece of kit that stands up to serious amounts of wear and tear, while Lifeventure’s RFID travel wallet is a great example of a product that proves opting for extra security doesn’t require going down the supersized route.

Preparing for your next trip, staycation or holiday just got a whole lot easier with these packing cubes that will keep your suitcase organised

The best overall travel wallet

Made from Fjallraven’s own blend of incredibly durable G-1000 fabric, this travel wallet is no exception to their commitment to producing quality outdoor and travel gear; and the reviewers certainly agree, with many of them commenting on the toughness of the fabric. The only negative is the price - but let’s not forget you get what you pay for.

Zoppen Travel Wallet

The best versatile travel wallet

If you’re looking for a travel wallet that blends style with substance, we think we’ve found the one. Yes, it’s PU leather not real leather and that slight disappointment is reflected in the reviews, but if you take a look at its neat envelope design and its variety of pockets, you’ll find that there isn’t too much to complain about.

Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

The best smart travel wallet

Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech. It's also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?” - pretty cool right!

3. Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

Losing your valuables is one of the biggest fears while travelling. Can technology help? Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech; as well as space for nine cards, six of which can be protected by a layer of RFID-block, but the wallet is also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?”

Funded within three hours on Kickstarter, this Ekster wallet also offers worldwide traceability via a smart card so you can tell you where it was last seen on a map. That’s the same technology used by FedEx to track its containers. What’s more, it’s all solar-powered and doesn’t run out of charge for two months.

The document storage section has a waterproof cover, which will add peace of mind if you go out on a hike. Zipped all around, it’s also got a small carry handle.

9. LifeVenture RFiD Mini Travel Wallet

Find yourself waist deep in a river? It’s waterproof. Find yourself going through some sketchy looking areas? It protects against Radio-Frequency Identification devices. It boasts pockets for your passport, boarding passes, cash, cards and even your smartphone. It's the perfect compact travel wallet and for the price, and reviewers agree, you can’t beat it.

The best multi pocket travel wallet

Go Travel Document Organiser

10. Go Travel Document Organiser

This travel document holder is the perfect contender for the most amount of pockets featured in a small space competition. There’s several card slots, an ID slot, a travel money zipped pocket, a slot to put your boarding passes and enough slots for several passports, if you’re travelling as a family.

It’s also good to note that this travel wallet provides RFID protection, so you can be completely sure that your identification is safe. Comments suggest that it’s fairly bulky in size, and therefore needs a large pocket for storing it away, aside from that, it’s the perfect practical travel companion.

How to buy the best travel wallet for you

Your choice of travel wallet will partly depend on style. Leather screams ‘sophisticated businessman’, while durable, waterproof materials will appeal to those who only entertain travel-grade products that will last much longer than the air miles you collect.

Having space for passports and cards is standard, but not all travel document holders have space for keys, pens, and cash, and even some electronics.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft.

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

The Best Travel Wallets: Australian Guide

Anthony

  • September 5, 2023
  • Travel Gear

Travel Wallets are designed to store your passport and other important items like travel cards, ID, money and tickets while travelling. They’ll ensure your passport doesn’t get damaged or lost.

The Best Travel Wallets

Here are my top travel wallet picks that are available in Australia:

Bellroy Travel Folio – My top pick

The Bellroy Travel Wallet

The Bellroy Travel Folio is a beautifully made travel wallet. The 2nd generation of their Travel Folio now includes a zip. This will hold everything securely inside with no risk of anything falling out. However it also features a really handy slip pocket on the outside so you can easily keep your passport and tickets within easy reach at the airport and then put them in the zipper pocket later.

The Bellroy Travel Folio includes a micro pen. This is really handy when going through customs and on the plane when you need to fill out arrival cards. There is even a hidden pocket to securely keep your SIM card, if you’ve swapped it out for a travel sim.

Like most travel wallets, the Bellroy Folio has RFID protection.

Overall I think the Bellroy Travel Wallet is one of the most thoughtfully designed and well made travel wallets I’ve come across. It’s the one I travel with. It’s more expensive than many others, but I think the higher quality construction and thoughtful design is well worth it. It makes a great gift for any traveller!

Amazon Basics Travel Wallet

Amazon Basics Travel Wallet

If you’re after a cheap travel wallet that does the job and also looks pretty good, the Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is a good choice.

This travel wallet has room for 1 passport in a slip pocket as well space for multiple cards and room to slip cash notes into.

The Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is about the size of an Australian Passport so it doesn’t take up a lot of room and is quite thin.

Vulkit Travel Wallet

Vulkit Travel Wallet

The Vulkit Travel Wallet comes in 6 different colours. It has space for a passport, 6 cards, notes and tickets.

While the design of this travel wallet is quite long, it doesn’t feel that big and it’s still very slim.

What to Look for in a Travel Wallet

Most travel wallets have enough room to store a passport alongside some cards. If you want to store your airline tickets in the wallet, I’d recommend going for one of the wallets that feature a longer design.

If you want to carry your’s and your travel companions passport in the one wallet, I’d recommend the Bellroy, which I can confirm carries two passports at once. If you’re just holding onto your own passport the other wallets will suffice.

All the travel wallets that I’ve recommended have RFID protection. While skimming attacks are very rare, it’s a nice addition to know that your credit cards and passport are safe.

Passport + Boarding Pass Holder while going through security

What document holder do you use? Do you recommend the ones with RFID blocking? I have a leather one from Magellan's but the elastic holding the passport in is starting to rip, so I have to get something else. I like LL Bean's Travel Document Organizer, but it looks bulky. I'm thinking about Tom Bihn's Passport Pouch because it looks sturdy and non-bulky, but I would have to take it out to show it to security. With my old one, I could flip it open with one hand. My winter jacket has zippered pockets so that works, but that jacket is not light to pack. And there aren't that many women's shirts with pockets except for those nylon ones that are too hot for me. My comfy travel pants have slash pockets and for sure the passport & boarding pass will fall out. Thanks for all your help. I've enjoyed reading all the posts on all the various subjects. I've learned a lot of super helpful information.

Hi Carole, for going through security, and even before that at the check-in desk, I like to wear the holders that are on a cord around my neck. It frees up your hands for the luggage, purse, bags etc. I have a few in different colors to match luggage and purses. I think Magellans carries them. Everything is in one place.

When I am on the ground at my destination I keep my passport, money and cards in my waist money belt. (Small change-day money is in a change purse in a front pocket,). Airline tickets and things I need only for the return flight I lock up in my suitcase.

Hopes this helps, Happy Travels!

I do pretty much the same as Lauretta (except for the matching purses and luggage part - I don't care). I use a regular neck pouch with a see-through pocket while I'm at the airport. Mine have been giveaways from travel shows and work, but you can get them at Target or Walmart. Besides my travel documents, I keep a little cash in it for use at the airport before boarding. Once I'm at my destination, my passport and other documents go in my money belt.

Carole, as of last week, in Oregon and Denver, you must show your boarding pass and ID (passport) to the TSA security guys.

The TSA requires you show approved government ID and boarding pass when entering the secure area.

In a few months, TSA'a Secure Flight program will require the name on your boarding pass match exactly the name on your approved government ID. (Don't lose sleep over this yet, it's being rolled out slowly)

In most European airports, you will need to show boarding pass and passport. (If it isn't done now, it will be soon.)

I use a basic neck wallet (sold by RS Store and Eagle Creek, among others) that can be worn either under or over my clothes. Once past security, I wear it under my clothes. (I can easily get to it when I need to.)

Once I'm at my final destination, and don't need the passport anymore, it goes into my regular "hidden pocket" moneybelt.

I don't use any document holders when travelling. I've found the simplest method is simply to carry my Passport in a shirt pocket, as it's easily and quickly accessible and can be secured. After landing in Europe and checking into the Hotel (where it may be necessary to show the Passport), the Passport goes into a zip-lock bag in my Money Belt.

It's been necessary here for quite some time to show both the photo page of the Passport and the boarding pass when going through both security and past the check-in desk when "general boarding" starts. At the aircraft door, only the boarding pass is required.

AFAIK, my Passport doesn't contain an RFID chip, but I suspect the next one will have that feature. In any case, I'm sure the information will be securely encrypted so I'm not sure whether there's any need for an RFID blocking wallet. A "hacker" would need to pass a reader fairly close to the Passport, something which would probably be quite obvious.

Happy travels!

Just a note, you can no longer "flip it open" The TSA must now HOLD the original passport so that they can "examine it" (No one is sure what they are doing but they think it helps LOL!)

Don't worry about RFID blocking. It is just another urban legend that someone can walk up behind you and steal all of your passport information. There is no information about you on the magnetic strip of your passport nor is there any information in the RFID chip. Let them read it -- if they can. Second, I have never found any real purpose to a doc holder other than to making money for someone else. Use one of the neck wallets on a cord. And there are lots of women shirts with secure pockets from REI, Landsend, etc. -- just look for them.

(No one is sure what they are doing but they think it helps LOL!) <<

For US domestic flights they examine your DL or other ID for signs of tampering. For example, sometimes they shine a UV flashlight on it and look for the invisible ink. For international flights they're doing much the same.

I admit that while transiting airports and while at home I keep my passport in a BRIGHT pink case. This has nothing to do with being able get it out etc, but it's easy to find in the "black hole" that my carryon becomes.

Once I get to Europe it's generally either in my money belt or in a hotel room safe.

Seriously... do you think this stops a terrorist? NO, the terrorist have friends that work for the airline where NOTHING is really checked and the rules don't apply.

Or the terrorist flys using thier REAL name!

The TSA thinks that the terrorist is wearing a sign saying "I AM A TERRORIST" and would do something stupid to show them.

What this does is make us THINK they are doing something to help ensure our safety.

But in all honesty. If you show up for a domestic flight without a goverment issued id you can STILL get on the plane. So........

Ron...is this the same Anne Coulter who thought Canada sent troops to Vietnam, and who thinks women shouldn't have the vote because they keep electing Democrats? ;)

Travel Wallet For Passport And Tickets

A travel wallet is a great way to keep all of your important documents together when you’re on the go. This type of wallet is typically designed to hold a passport, tickets, and other important papers. If you’re looking for a way to keep your passport and tickets safe and organized while you’re traveling, a travel wallet is a great option.

There are a variety of different travel wallets on the market, so you can find one that is the right size and shape for your needs. Most travel wallets are made of sturdy materials like leather or canvas, so they can stand up to wear and tear.

Many travel wallets also come with a variety of pockets and compartments, which can help you organize your documents. For example, some wallets have a section for your passport, a section for your tickets, and a section for your boarding pass. This can make it easy to find what you need when you’re on the go.

If you’re looking for a way to keep your passport and tickets safe and organized while you’re traveling, a travel wallet is a great option.

Are passport wallets worth it?

When travelling, it’s important to keep your passport, tickets, and other important documents safely together. This is where a passport wallet comes in handy. But are they worth the investment?

There are a few factors to consider when deciding if a passport wallet is right for you. First, consider how often you travel. If you only take one or two trips a year, a passport wallet may not be worth the investment. However, if you travel frequently, a passport wallet can be a lifesaver. They’re especially useful for keeping all of your documents together and preventing them from getting lost or damaged.

Another factor to consider is the type of traveler you are. If you’re the type of person who likes to be organized, a passport wallet can help you stay organized while on the go. If you’re the type of person who prefers to travel light, a passport wallet may not be for you.

Ultimately, whether or not a passport wallet is worth it depends on your individual needs. If you think a passport wallet would be helpful for you, go ahead and invest in one. They’re a great way to keep your documents safe and organized while travelling.

Can I use a passport holder as a wallet?

Passport holders are designed to protect your passport, while wallets are designed to store your money and other belongings. While you could technically use a passport holder as a wallet, it is not recommended, as passport holders are not designed to hold the weight of other items.

Your passport is a valuable document that should be kept safe and secure. A passport holder is specifically designed to protect your passport from damage, dirt, and moisture. A passport holder has a built-in pocket to keep your passport in place, and most passport holders also have a lanyard or strap to keep the holder around your neck or attached to your bag.

Wallets, on the other hand, are not specifically designed to protect your passport. Wallets are designed to store your money, credit cards, and other belongings. Most wallets have multiple pockets and compartments to store your items.

Since passport holders are specifically designed to protect passports, they are a better option than wallets for storing your passport. Passport holders are also less likely to fall out of your pocket or get lost than wallets.

If you do choose to use a passport holder as a wallet, be sure to only store the essentials in the holder. Do not overload the holder with items, as this could damage your passport.

Which passport holder is best?

There is no definitive answer to the question of which passport holder is best. However, there are a few factors that can be considered when making this determination.

One important factor to consider is the number of countries that a passport holder can visit without a visa. In general, passports from developed countries offer more visa-free travel options than passports from developing countries.

Another factor to consider is the power of the passport holder’s passport. A passport that offers visa-free travel to a large number of countries is considered to be more powerful than a passport that offers visa-free travel to a fewer number of countries.

Finally, the cost of a passport can also be a consideration. Some passports are more expensive to obtain than others.

Ultimately, the best passport holder is the one that best meets the individual’s needs and priorities.

Do I need RFID protection for my passport?

RFID chips are becoming increasingly common in passports, ID cards, and other forms of identification. These chips store data that can be read by a scanner from a distance. This means that someone could potentially scan your passport from a distance and get access to your personal information.

There are a few ways to protect your passport from RFID scanning. One is to keep your passport in a shielded wallet or pouch. Another is to cover the chip with opaque tape. However, the best way to protect your passport from RFID scanning is to purchase an RFID-blocking passport cover.

Can I put stickers on my passport?

Yes, you can put stickers on your passport. However, there are some restrictions on what stickers you can put on your passport.

The Department of State will not allow stickers that could obscure or damage sensitive passport information. Stickers that are obscene, offensive, or threatening are also not allowed.

You can put stickers on the cover of your passport, but you should avoid putting them on the pages with important passport information.

How do I connect my passport to my passport wallet?

There are a few ways to connect your passport to your passport wallet. One way is to use a lanyard. Passports typically come with a lanyard attached, so you can just put the passport wallet around your neck and the passport will be secure. Another way to connect the two is by using a clip. There are a few different types of clips that can be used, but a simple clip that goes through the hole on the top of the passport and attaches to the strap on the passport wallet is the most common. Finally, some people use a chain to connect the two. This is also a popular way to keep a passport safe, as it is harder for someone to steal it if it is attached to a chain.

How do I carry my passport when traveling?

When traveling, it is important to always have your passport on you. This document proves your identity and citizenship, and is necessary for international travel. However, carrying your passport can be a challenge, especially if you are traveling through crowded areas or on a busy street. Here are a few tips on how to carry your passport safely and securely when traveling.

The best way to carry your passport is in a passport holder. This holder will protect your passport from getting wet or damaged, and will also keep it hidden from view. If you do not have a passport holder, you can put your passport in a ziplock bag or a plastic sleeve.

Another option is to keep your passport in your pocket. If you choose this method, make sure that your passport is in a safe place where it will not be easily stolen or lost. You can also put your passport in a money belt or a travel pouch.

No matter how you choose to carry your passport, make sure to keep it close to you at all times. Do not leave it in your hotel room or in your car. And if you are traveling in a group, make sure to keep your passport with you at all times, even when you are not using it.

Should You Always Keep Your Passport on You When Traveling?

Y ou need a passport during many stages of the vacation - to enter and exit different countries, to rent cars, and to check in at hotels. So it's vitally coiimportant to keep your passport safe because getting a new one can completely ruin your whole vacation.

That's why in this article, we'll teach you how to keep your passport, cash, cards, and other important documents safe while traveling . If you follow all the precautionary measures, then you should be fine even after getting robbed.

Is It a Good Idea to Keep Your Passport on You at All Times When Traveling?

Keeping your passport on you during all stages of your vacation might not be the smartest thing to do, especially if you're keeping it together with all of your other important documents, cards, and cash. You could get robbed, scammed, or you could simply misplace it. And losing your passport in another country can be incredibly frustrating because you'll need to get a new one for returning back home.

That said, most countries require all travelers to keep their passports on them at all times . Although random checks on the street are incredibly unlikely, you may be fined if you wouldn't have a valid form of identification. So even though you could get robbed, you have to carry your passport anyway.

Tips on How to Safely Carry Your Passport While Traveling

Unfortunately, most of the time, you don't have any other choice but to carry your passport on you at all times because it's required by the law. However, there are certain things that you can do to keep your passport safe.

1. In Addition to Your Wallet, Carry a Hidden Passport Holder

The most important thing that you can do to keep your passport, cards, and money safe, is to carry another hidden wallet. In addition to your regular wallet, you should also carry a hidden passport holder around your neck, underneath your clothes, which also has room for some cash and cards, just like the [amazon link="B017AHHFNK" title="Zero Grid Travel neck wallet"].

You would keep a small amount of cash and coins in your regular wallet, and all of your most important stuff, like your passport, cards, large amounts of cash, and other important documents around your neck. The regular wallet would just be something to give away in case you get robbed.

Ideally, you should also have two cards - your main one, and a simple debit card with a low balance. You should use this debit card during the vacation and top it up as needed. By keeping the debit card in your "fake wallet", not only would you be protecting yourself against physical theft but also digital card scams.

2. When Traveling as a Family, Don’t Keep All of Your Passports Together

One major mistake that most families do, is keeping all of their passports and cash together in one place. Of course, it's simpler to organize everything like this, but if you get robbed, mugged, or you'd misplace your stash, that would mean that everyone is left without any cash and documents.

So instead, you should split all of your cash and passports among all adults equally. And preferably, every adult should have a separate [amazon link="B017AHHFNK" title="hidden neck wallet"] for keeping their most important documents, cash, and cards.

3. Make a Photocopy of Your Passport

Before going on your trip, you should make printed copies of your passport and take one or two with you on your trip. This would act as a backup in case you'd lose your real passport. It helps speed up the process of issuing a new passport at the local embassy or consulate, and also gives you something to show to the local police officers if needed.

Just make sure to keep them separate from your real passport. You can keep it in your luggage, but make sure to write on top of the printed copy with a pen "meant for issuing a new passport if my real passport gets lost", or something similar, so if the printed copy gets stolen, it can't be used to open up bank accounts, take loans, rent cars, or do anything else.

4. E-Mail a Scanned Copy of Your Passport Before the Vacation

Before your trip, make sure to scan your passport, and email the copy to your own email address. You can also choose to email it to your travel partner or a close relative, because in case of an accident, they may need it.

5. Add Emergency Contact Information to Your Passport

In case of an accident, where you're unable to identify yourself, or in case your passport gets lost and the person who found it wants to give it back, you should include some contact details in your passport. If you have a [amazon link="B091T5Y524" title="passport cover"], you can write emergency contact details of a person close to you on a piece of paper and keep it inside. Write down their name, email address, and telephone, with the country code included.

6. Most Hotels Offer Lockers for Storing Important Documents

Although legally, you aren't allowed to walk around in another country without valid identification, some travelers do it anyway, and only carry a photocopy of their document while outside of the hotel. Most hotels offer safes within the rooms or the reception, where you can choose to keep your passport and other important documents, usually for a small fee. Just don't leave your documents in your room not in a safe, as they could get stolen during room cleaning.

7. Register With the Local Embassy or Consulate and Inform Them of Your Trip

Although it's not mandatory, it's always recommended to inform your government's embassy or consulate within the country you'll be traveling to. Just call them up and let them know that you'll be on a vacation there, for how long you'll be, and where you'll be staying. Often, consulates have online forms for this, which take just a few minutes to complete. In case of any disasters, accidents, terrorist acts, international conflicts, and anything else, the consulate will have an easier time tracking down which citizens are located in the country, and organizing further help if needed. It's also worth down to write down the location and contact details of the embassy or consulate in case you need it.

8. Keep Your Passport in a Spill-Proof Container

Not only can your passport be stolen or lost, but it can also be damaged by water. So it's a smart idea to always carry it in a [amazon link="B07C9C9ZYW" title="waterproof cover"], in case you get caught in a rainstorm or something similar.

Frequently Asked Questions About Passport Safety During Traveling

What's the safest way to carry a passport when traveling, should i put a copy of my passport in my checked luggage.

We wouldn't recommend packing a printed copy of your passport in checked luggage, because theft is more common there . In case of losing your suitcase, just writing your email address and phone on a piece of paper or luggage tag will be enough.

However, we do recommend carrying copies of your passport somewhere else. They can be carried in your carry-on, personal item, or purse because they're much less likely to be exposed to thieves. Just don't keep it together with your passport, otherwise, it defeats the purpose of being a backup form of identification. Also, it's a good idea to write something on top of the copy of the passport with a pen, so it can't be used for opening bank accounts, taking loans, etc.

Is it safe to leave my passport at the hotel or Airbnb?

Is it safe to keep my passport in my luggage when traveling.

Keeping your passport in your backpack or carry-on isn't the end of the world, but it still has some risks, because you could forget it somewhere or it could get stolen in cafes or public transport. But you should definitely avoid packing your passport in checked luggage because stuff gets stolen from it somewhat frequently, and you'd need your passport during the flight anyway.

You should keep your passport somewhere on you, ideally in a [amazon link="B017AHHFNK" title="hidden wallet around your neck"]. That way it's protected from pocket thieves and it's very hard to lose.

Do I need a passport for domestic travel?

In some countries, you can leave your passport at home for domestic flights if you're a citizen of that country. However, you'll still need a valid form of ID to present at the airport to prove that the ticket is purchased in your name. In the US , a valid form of identification includes passports, driver's licenses, and military IDs. In Europe, valid forms of identification include passports and state-issued ID cards.

Do I always need to carry my passport when traveling in Europe?

If you aren't an EU citizen, then you always need to carry a valid passport with you. If not, you could be fined and even face jail time in rare instances.

If you are an EU citizen, then theoretically, you don't need to carry any identification when traveling to some EU countries. That's because the EU has a rule that EU citizens have the right to move freely across the borders of the EU. However, it's highly recommended that you carry either your passport or ID card because some EU countries require all travelers to carry a valid form of identification at all times. Plus, you'll need it anyway for boarding the flight, when checking in at the hotel, when renting a car, and for driving a car.

Is it legal to carry only a photocopy of my passport when traveling internationally?

What passport expiry date is needed for traveling.

Although some require only three, most countries across the world require all incoming travelers to have a passport that's valid for another six months. It's also important to note that some countries start counting this period from the day you arrive and others from the day you're expected to leave.

So to be sure, always ensure that your passport will be valid for another six months starting from the date you're flying back home.

Is it legal to carry my ID instead of a passport when traveling?

What do i do if my passport gets lost or stolen during a vacation.

If you lose your passport or it gets stolen during your vacation, then the first thing that you need to do is get in touch with the local embassy or consulate of your citizenship. You can find the appropriate contact details by Googling: "Your country" + embassy consulate in + "the country you're staying in".

Before returning home, you'll have to get a new passport, which usually can be done in a few days but in urgent cases, even within one day. Before going to the consulate, you'll most likely need to make a new photo for the new passport. After getting in touch with the consulate, they'll tell you all the necessary details.

That's why we recommend people have photocopies of their old passport on hand, to speed up the process, and to already note down the embassy contact details before going on a trip.

Where do I keep my money and cards when traveling?

Ideally, you should keep most of your money and important credit cards in a [amazon link="B017AHHFNK" title="travel wallet"] around your neck, hidden underneath your clothes. You can keep a minimal amount of cash and a debit card with a low balance (which you can top up if needed) in your regular wallet. This will minimize your losses in case you lose your wallet or you get mugged.

Facial Recognition and Digital Identity Solutions

Discover new technologies for a faster, easier travel experience..

Digital forms of identity enable the passenger to seamlessly and securely transmit identity information using facial recognition at select TSA checkpoints.

* Travelers must present alternative physical ID if requested by TSA.

** Participation in these pilots is optional. Your photo will be taken if you participate. During the evaluation periods, your photo and limited biographic information will be shared with DHS Science and Technology Directorate to evaluate the technology's effectiveness. Please notify a TSA officer if you do not wish to participate and would like to receive standard ID verification screening.

As TSA continues to integrate new technologies for a faster, easier travel experience, we've collaborated on several innovative digital identity initiatives, which work in place of a physical ID* or boarding pass. Be sure to follow the steps to setup and activate your selected digital identity solution before your trip so it’s ready to present at the TSA checkpoint. Look for your preferred airline or device maker below to find out more!

Delta Biometric Facial Identification

TSA PreCheck® Touchless Identity Solution

Opt-in at select airports to participate in the TSA PreCheck Touchless Identity Solution program during check-in with participating airlines. Store your participation preference, TSA PreCheck KTN and Passport Number in the airlines mobile app. By opting in, your identity can be verified without presenting a physical ID at bag drop, the security checkpoint, and at the boarding gate.

Participation is Optional

  • Delta Airlines TSA PreCheck® bag drop and checkpoint

United Airlines TSA PreCheck® bag drop and checkpoint

ID in Apple Wallet

Mobile Driver’s License and Digital Identification

Add your state-issued eligible driver's license or identification card to your phone's digital wallet. Or download a TSA approved digital ID app to your mobile device.

Present your ID at select TSA checkpoints by tapping your phone or linked device or scanning the app issued QR code. Your photo will be taken by the TSA reader at security to proceed to screening.

You must still carry your physical ID as needed.

Participating Programs and Airports

No. Participation in the testing of biometric technology is voluntary. Passengers may notify a TSA officer if they do not wish to participate and instead go through the standard ID verification process.

Yes. Currently, all passengers must continue to have their physical IDs on hand. If a digital ID cannot be verified at the TSA security checkpoint, a passenger must use an acceptable physical identity document (e.g., driver’s license, passport) to proceed through the identity verification process.

TSA is committed to protecting passenger privacy and secures all personal data collected as part of our biometric efforts. TSA will continue to comply with DHS policies with respect to safeguarding PII throughout each phase of biometric solution development – from initial design to implementation – to protect passenger information. In addition to cybersecurity measures that ensure all data is protected while in transit and while at rest, biometric technology transforms passenger photos to templates that cannot be reverse-engineered to recreate the original image. Additionally, all capabilities TSA tests adhere to DHS and TSA cybersecurity requirements.

Consistent with the DHS Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs), TSA retains PII only for as long as is necessary to fulfill the specified purpose(s) of biometric technology pilots. DHS FIPPs and TSA’s PIAs provide guidance on matters such as transparency, specific use limitations, data minimization, and purpose specification for our biometric identity verification pilots. Additional information on data protection procedures for each test is available in TSA’s PIAs .

TSA exploration of biometric solutions is based on rigorous scientific study and analysis. We are aware of a variety of public concerns related to the accuracy of biometric technologies and take this issue seriously. Along with our federal partners, we are carefully studying biometric solutions in both laboratories and operational environments to proactively identify and mitigate performance issues up front. Accuracy and equity in biometric system performance is a key issue for TSA, and one we are carefully studying to ensure we understand the full benefits of this technology and make informed decisions to mitigate risks.

The acceptance of digital IDs has the potential to modernize checkpoint screening procedures and technologies to better serve the aviation security ecosystem, reduce points of contact for passengers, and pave the way for a more seamless travel experience. This effort is one of the steps TSA is taking under President Biden’s Executive Order on Transforming Customer Experience .

TSA publishes Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) to notify the public  about tests and additional information on privacy protections. TSA also notifies passengers using signage at the airport near dedicated test lanes. These signs notify the public that participation is voluntary.

The use of biometrics has the potential to automate the ID and boarding pass verification process for more efficient and secure screening.

Biometric recognition capabilities will improve the performance and security of TSA operations by increasing the accuracy and reliability of passenger identity verification by TSA. Biometrics can enable TSA to automate part of the current manual procedures and allow professional screening personnel to leverage their training and experience to focus more on alarms and error resolution.

No. TSA is testing biometric technology at the airport to improve and perhaps automate the identity verification portion of the process for passengers, not for law enforcement or immigration enforcement purposes. Additionally, TSA does not tolerate racial profiling. Profiling is not an effective way to perform security screening, and TSA personnel are trained to treat every passenger with dignity and respect.

A digital ID is an electronic representation of personally identifying information that may be used to verify the identity of a person. A mobile driver's license is a type of digital ID. It is a digital representation of the information contained on a state-issued physical driver’s license, stored on a mobile electronic device, such as a smartphone, and read electronically. A mobile driver’s license is similar to a credit card holder having a physical credit card and multiple card records in digital wallets that require biometric verification prior to each transaction. A digital ID may also be issued by a non-governmental entity based on information derived from governmental or non-governmental sources.

If TSA is unable to obtain a match through biometric technology as part of a test, the TSA officer will use standard passenger identity verification procedures.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the commercial aviation sector and on TSA’s aviation security mission. TSA must prioritize the health and safety of our officers and the traveling public. To promote social distancing and reduce contact between officers and passengers, we are exploring a self-service version of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) that enables passengers to scan their own photo IDs for authentication and uses biometrics to verify passenger identity, eliminating a point of contact between officers and passengers. This updated version of CAT (known as CAT-2) biometrically verifies a passenger’s identity by taking a picture and comparing the passenger’s live image to the photo on their authenticated photo ID (e.g., driver's license, passport). TSA first demonstrated this technology in August 2020 at DCA. TSA also conducted additional pilots to further test this technology, starting in March 2021 at DCA, PHX, IND, and MIA. TSA has since upgraded the CAT-2 units to feature a digital ID reader, updated user interface, and other enhancements including a new podium and space for additional processing power. Starting in March 2022, TSA began conducting field tests to assess these upgraded CAT-2 units.

TSA began testing the acceptance of digital IDs, including mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) from participating states, at select TSA PreCheck® checkpoints in early 2022. Checkpoints that are testing the acceptance of digital IDs will have signage posted. TSA is actively engaged with other organizations to continue developing capabilities, standardizing the digital ID ecosystem to ensure interoperability with TSA systems, and piloting digital ID technology at various airport checkpoints around the country.

Below is the current list of eligible digital IDs from state or private issuing authorities that may be accepted by TSA at the checkpoint for testing and evaluation purposes.

The REAL ID Modernization Act (2020) clarified that the REAL ID Act applies to state-issued mobile driver’s licenses and mobile identification cards (collectively "mDLs"). On April 19, 2021, DHS published a request for information to seek public comment to inform an upcoming rulemaking that will address security and privacy standards for the issuance of mDLs and enable federal agencies to accept these credentials for official purposes as defined in the REAL ID Act and regulation.

No. TSA will only be able to receive a passenger’s digital identification information at TSA checkpoints upon a passenger's consent. Passengers will control access to and use of the digital ID kept in their mobile device. Generally, TSA does not copy or store the digital ID, unless it is done in a limited testing environment for evaluation of the effectiveness of the pilot. In that instance, TSA will inform the passenger through PIAs, signage, and other means.

TSA, in partnership with Delta and United Airlines , continues to expand TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at select airports for Bag Drop and Checkpoint Security.

Mobile Driver's License TSA enables Arizona residents to use mobile driver’s license or state ID in Samsung Wallet

Facial Recognition TSA uses facial recognition technology to verify the identity of travelers on a voluntary basis.

The Tech Traveler: Luggage & Travel Tech

  • Pro Packer: Best Way to Pack A Suitcase

Raise a hand if you’re a tech junkie…you probably have both hands raised; Macy’s does too! Reap the benefits of technology with tech luggage—suitcases these days are getting so smart, they might just start taking vacations on their own.

New tech luggage or travel tech can lock itself, weigh itself, be tracked remotely, charge your phone and even send you an alert if you move too far away from it—not to mention it’s made from super strong materials.

If you’re a tech-savvy traveler, you need to get on-board this tech travel trend. Shop Macy’s for tech luggage and travel tech accessories in top travel brands such as Travelpro, Heys, Delsey and more!

What is Tech Luggage? Tech luggage is any suitcase or travel bag that contains high-tech capabilities such as device charging, remote app-enabled controls, electronic scales or locks, proximity alarms and Bluetooth connectivity. Tech luggage is usually hard-shelled or hardsided, comes in both checked bag and carry-on sizes and can combine any of these features. If you love technology as much as we do, keep reading to learn more about the benefits of tech luggage .

What Are the Benefits of Travel Tech Luggage?

1. On-the-Go Charging. You won’t have to worry about your phone’s or laptop’s battery running low (during those dreaded layovers and waiting periods) with high-tech luggage that includes a removable battery and USB port. Luggage with USB chargers like carry-ons, backpacks and briefcases are super convenient for the tech business traveler that needs to remain “logged on” at their gate and also in the air.

2. Better with Bluetooth. Do you tend to overpack? You’re not alone! With tech luggage that incorporates a built-in Bluetooth-enabled scale, you can easily check the weight of the bag from an app on your phone before you leave the house. Some travel tech bags can even include a built-in Bluetooth TSA lock. This allows you to remotely lock or unlock your luggage from an app on your phone for convenience and peace of mind during your travels.

3. Check-In Friendly. To sail smoothly through check-in, go with travel tech bags or suitcases that are powered by AAA batteries and not Lithium Ion. They tend to be check-in friendly and compliant with most airline regulations.

Tech Travel Tip : Be sure to check the type of battery in your tech luggage against the airline regulations you’re traveling with. While dry cell alkaline batteries such as your typical AAA are commonly accepted, dry cell rechargeable, lithium ion and lithium metal batteries can be accepted but with some limits. That’s why it’s important to check before arriving!

4. Track Your Tech Luggage. Never leave your (inanimate) travel companion behind with tech luggage that includes proximity alerts. A built-in proximity sensor will alert you when you’re a certain distance away from your luggage —you may even receive a text or alert message that says, “You are leaving me behind.” This will help keep track of your luggage if it gets lost and help ensure you won’t forget it in the overhead rack when you’re in a rush to exit the plane…or come back for it if you already have.

5. Durability. Most tech luggage is hard-shell or hardside and made with strong polycarbonate materials. This means it’s extremely durable with high impact resistance, so it can withstand the not-so-gentle supervision of airline baggage handlers or TSA officials and offer your valuables better protection.

What Tech Travel Accessories Do I Need?

If your budget doesn’t allow for tech luggage, grab some tech travel accessories instead! Many of these products allow you to stay connected during your travels, too. Shop top travel brands like Samsonite, Go Travel, Travelon and more!

1. USB Adapter. A USB adapter is portable and can be packed in your carry-on to use when your mobile devices need a quick charge. Some brands carry worldwide adapters, so you can keep crucial electronics charged no matter where you are.

2. Travel Scale. Save time, money and headaches and stop worrying if your luggage will pass the test—determine if your bag is overweight before you head to the airport with a travel scale. You have the option of manual or digital travel scales ; both are compact and easy to read.

3. TSA Lock. Secure your suitcase with a TSA lock. These are the only approved luggage locks that allow the TSA to open your lock (and luggage) with a universal key if deemed necessary to ensure that it is safe for travel.

4. RFID Travel Wallet. Protect and organize your financial essentials with a RFID travel wallet . This type of travel wallet includes RFID technology that helps to shield your credit cards from electronic intrusion.

5. RFID Passport Holder. Traveling abroad? Protect your passport with a RFID passport holder . This type of passport holder uses the same RFID technology to help shield personal data in your passport from electronic intrusion.

5. Anti-Theft Bags. Keep your most important items safe while traveling with an anti-theft bag. These types of bags can feature slash-resistant body panels and shoulder straps, lockable compartments, lockdown straps, RFID-blocking card and passport slots and pockets. Travelon has a great assortment ranging from crossbody bags to backpacks to clutches and more!
