14 best clubs in Amsterdam according to locals [2024 guide]

Grab your dancin' shoes 🕺

Heather Slevin

So, you’re on the hunt for the best clubs in Amsterdam — where the music is booming and the dancefloor is jumping. Well, you’re in luck, because we’ve compiled a list of the best clubs the Dutch capital has to offer.

Amsterdam is known worldwide for its epic nights out. From raging hen parties to the Thursday-night-drinks-that-become-a-four-night-bender, Amsterdam has a club for everyone’s needs.

Whether you’re looking to dance the night away or sit, wallflower-esque, there’s something out there you’re guaranteed to enjoy.

1. OT301: for the creative types

2. radion: where you can lose yourself in the music, 3. nyx: the greek goddess, and where you’ll find acceptance, 4. vondelbunker: where you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time, 5. lofi: for chill vibes, 6. parallel: where you can rave the night away, 7. jimmy woo: for an epic-themed night, 8. paradiso: you might catch lady gaga hangin’ round, 9. air: for veterans and those freshly 18 (or 21), 10. dragshow bar lellebel: shantay, you slay, 11. chigaco social club: for a night of epic memories, 12. shelter: where you can hide from the dutch winter and dance away, 13. melkweg: where you can be young and cultural, 14. escape: for an exhilarating experience ⚡.

A club ran by the non-profit organisation, OT301 , you’ll find the dance floor of OT301 situated in the old Dutch Film Academy of Amsterdam.

The foundation of this organisation began in 1999 when members squatted the deserted building — and it has been open to the public ever since!

You’ll find that the club is split into two different sections. Studio 1 is a bigger space, hosting bands and performances, while Studio 2 is a little smaller. There’s also a bar and seating area for those that would prefer to sit and chill.

Before you hit the club, though, you might have one burning question; can I get high on the dancefloor?

Drug use in Dutch clubs

Person-rolling-weed-into-a-joint-clubs-amsterdam

It’s important to be aware of the laws regarding drug use in the Netherlands . It’s a major shock to many tourists, but weed is not actually legal in the Netherlands : however, it is decriminalised.

If you are going to get high in one of Amsterdam’s famous clubs, try to avoid truffles . In general, we wouldn’t advise getting high for the first time inside a club! 🚫🍄

Another fact to be aware of before you get yourself in a spot of trouble: carry no more than 5 grams at any given time.

READ MORE | What Amsterdam bars can I smoke weed in (that aren’t coffeeshops)?

And, if you’re planning on smoking , do so outside. Most clubs will have a smoking area where you can relax and enjoy — but remember that pre-rolled joints are mostly a big nee nee . Bring those filters and rolls, folks! 🚬

Got the ground rules? Great! Grab those shot glasses and turn on the tunes. baby; it’s time to dance the night away! 🥂

8 Best Clubs in Amsterdam

By Clodagh Kinsella

Claire Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

Round-the-clock clubbing is now officially a thing in Amsterdam, with a growing number of venues scooping 24-hour licenses since a pioneering 2013 pilot program kicked off the scene. During October's citywide juggernaut Amsterdam Dance Event, you can actually dance to EDM stars and underground techno upstarts for two days straight—though if your tastes run more to cocktails paired with the latest indie darlings, the city’s progressive cultural hubs, many with storied pasts, cater to that, too. So cool is Amsterdam's nightlife scene that the city's “Night Mayor” (it's a job title, really) Mirik Milan is busy exporting the all-hours concept to the U.S., too. Our editor's picks of the best clubs and places for nightlife in Amsterdam cover the full spectrum of what's on offer.

Warehouse Elementenstraat Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

Warehouse Elementenstraat Arrow

In Amsterdam’s industrial western quarter, this old peanut factory was one of the Netherlands’ first large-scale rave hangouts in the early ‘90s. It burnt out quickly but reopened 20 years later, since which time the hangar-like space has become legendary once again for its raw vibe and hedonistic clubbing nights.

De School Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

De School Arrow

The current hot spot, this former technical school was taken over by the team behind iconic club Trouw in 2016. They've got a 24-hour license, and you’ll need that long to explore all its industrial-chic offerings: the dark and smoky club (in an old bike shed), multiple concert rooms, and a stellar veggie-forward restaurant, plus an exhibition space and ‘60s-style gym.

Default

AIR Amsterdam Arrow

A state-of-the-art design by local hero Marcel Wanders (check out that crazy LED wall) and perks like five funky bars make this one of the city’s "it" clubs. Unlike some of Amsterdam’s equally cavernous venues, the 1,300-capacity space manages to remain intimate with plenty of side rooms to investigate.

Claire Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

Claire Arrow

Claire’s two rooms play completely different sounds, so if you’re not into the old-school house in one, then move over to the other to catch an up-and-coming local DJ—one of the club's calling cards. They’ve also recently started an initiative with roving local music platform Nightcare to bring live music (everything from down-tempo folk to groovy brass bands) into the mix.

Moshing in an 18th-century church with stained-glass windows? Yep, it's par for the course at this grand icon of renovation, a product of the zeitgeist-shifting year of 1968. A memorable and beautiful spot to catch a show, it has welcomed everyone from Adele to Joy Division.

Shelter Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

Shelter Arrow

Enter through a hidden trapdoor and you’ll find the city’s most impressive new club: a sleek and dark hangout in the basement of the landmark waterfront A’DAM Tower. Don't let the bleak interior fool you though—here, it's all about what is coming through the speakers and it happens to be some of the best house and techno in the city.

Roest Club Bar Amsterdam The Netherlands

Roest Arrow

Sprawling across converted industrial space on the island of Oostenberg, this young, fresh, and funky hangout is a total one-off: part city beach, part club, and part easygoing bar and restaurant, also featuring quirky flea market finds and a lounge-worthy array of old cinema seats. Whatever you're after—and we mean whatever —you'll find it here.

Canvas Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

Canvas Arrow

On the top floor of the ultra-trendy Volkshotel, which once housed the Volkskrant newspaper, this chilled-out bar/restaurant morphs into an offbeat club on weekends, when crowds tend to spill out onto the romantic roof terrace. The basement houses another great club, DOKA, where you can continue the party once Canvas clears out.

Shelter Amsterdam, Best Clubs In Amsterdam from facebook.com slash shelteradam

The underground Shelter nightclub is not for the faint of heart. Found in the basement of the A’dam Toren, a ferry away from Centraal across the IJ river, Shelter attracts serious clubbers and party people who love to experience a brutal, intense, and totally unforgettable night out.

If you can endure – and in fact take delight –  in a 24-hour, high-volume bassy at an ear-drum-shuttering music level surrounded by an all-black décor, then Shelter Amsterdam is definitely for you.

The club is easily reachable by the Buiksloterweg ferry, leaving 24/7 behind Centraal Station.

Clubbers say Shelter is the place to go when looking for a good time in Amsterdam. One guest described her experience :

“I had the most incredible time dancing my little heart out until the sunrise at this cool underground club in Amsterdam. They played amazing techno/house and it was a really welcoming and fun vibe!”

Another said it’s perfect :

“It’s really perfect for adults looking for an after-party. In general, (it was an) excellent experience in Amsterdam when you party in Shelter. Really, maybe far, but you must visit again and again.”

Shelter is best known for its distinct House and Techno music, showcasing electronica from the defining outreaches of the industry.

Radion Amsterdam, Best Clubs In Amsterdam, from ra.co

Ravers and party-goers love Radion Amsterdam. They can’t get enough of this venue’s banging sound system and mini parties that start off in the underground smoking room. Radion is a creative hub where art, music, and food mix perfectly from the club’s café and restaurant.

People can’t get enough of Radion’s DJ-fuelled dance parties and a variety of events that include art exhibitions , workshops, and cinema screenings. A former dentistry academy, the establishment is located in an unassuming area within the city’s Nieuw-West district.

If you’re that kind of clubber who enjoys getting drenched in sweat from non-stop dancing, this lively 24-hour-licensed venue is definitely for you. The dancing is non-stop for real. Come to Radion if you’re looking for a seriously big night out. After the dancing, you can go check out the bar for an ice lolly to cool down.

Listen to what a satisfied guest said :

“I’ve had lunch at the Radion at least five times in the last couple of months and it has been consistently excellent. The food is delicious and plentiful and the service is friendly and efficient. Last but not least, the price is better than right.”

Claire, Best NightClubs In Amsterdam, from hostelworld.com

Claire Dance and Night Club is the best hangout venue for a group of few – only those who know that this place actually existed. Mostly, only locals and friends of friends can find their way to Claire, as it’s located within Rembrandt square, an area not exactly popular for tourism or night parties.

Found in the heart of Amsterdam’s city centre , Claire is known for its warm, colourful and obscure night events that allow people to immerse themselves in rooms filled with vibrant patterns and sounds. The club offers 2 rooms with wooden floors that are fitted with a Danley sound system.

Its location makes this nightclub what many consider as “a diamond in the rough”, tucked between a restaurant and another club, and has no obvious signage. Its heavy main door is not very inviting, either. Local clubbers frequent here for its intimate capacity, amazing ambience and techno bookings.

Here’s what they’re saying :

“Claire is a great place for dancers and you can only party on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You should party on Friday and Saturday until 6:00. Claire is owned by the same people who own Disco Dolly, another great place and Cannibale Royale. I am a fan of all these places.”

OT301, Best Clubs In Amsterdam, from ra.co

The thought that OT301 used to stand in a place of squat could give you the adrenalin rush you need. The area was in bad shape in 1999. Today, however, OT301 is now certainly a legal venue for artists and DJs in Amsterdam’s Overtoom. The name sounds like an android from Star Wars, and yes, this Amsterdam club is definitely as stellar.

With the best, upbeat underground sounds, OT301 provides a welcoming, free-party vibe for everyone, with a friendly space to let loose and party. This place offers the cheapest venue for a beer in Amsterdam , so prepare to guzzle more than you usually do.

OT301 also has public function areas as it hopes to remain as an inspiring organization that offers music, art, dance, theatre, film, workshops, vegan food, and other experimental events for many more years.

Party at OT301 at night, then in the morning, come for krav maga, cooking, dance, and other workshops, as well as screenings and other cultural events.

Then on weekends, enjoy dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass club nights, or dine at the De Peper vegan restaurant that rivals Amsterdam’s steakhouses and pancake joints.

Club NYX, Best NightClubs In Amsterdam, from clubbable.com

Everybody is welcome at Club NYX, especially to its cracking drag and LGBTQ+ nights.

Club NYX sees its guests and clubbers dancing every night to Dutch hip-hop and pop tunes on all of its three floors. NYX is an open-minded club, a warm melting pot of like-minded people, welcoming gay and straight, plus everyone in between.

The club is located in a four-story building that used to be a carriage house. It’s now a wonderful and colorful venue that is named after the Greek goddess of the night, daughter of Chaos, and mother of several children like Oneiroi (dreams) and Philotes (friendship).

Club NYX is best known for its popular music, friendly atmosphere and a DJ in an open-plan bathroom! People come here to have fun, drink, dance and laugh.

One happy clubber said,

“I went with 2 friends one of which is gay. And it’s amazing. Don’t let bad reviews fool you. It’s a great place, great crowd, great music. Really gay-friendly.”

De School, Best NightClubs In Amsterdam, from hctwins.nl

From this club’s name, you could guess that the place used to be a technical school. Partygoers at De School can still see the old gym hall on the floor. De School is a huge venue in Amsterdam, carrying the same mythical status as Berghain for Berlin or Fabric for London.

More than just a party venue, De School is a 24-hour complex with a high-end eatery, a gym, a café, and art exhibits.

Located in the school’s former bicycle storage area, the club can accommodate 700 people, dancing and partying to the music of local DJs, who’re given the opportunity to play extended sets, making it one of the top clubs to head to in Amsterdam.

Although De School is primarily focused on locals, international guests also regularly stop by.

Found on Doctor Jan van Breemenstraat in Amsterdam’s west, De School welcomes members of the public – not just club-goers – to visit its secluded outdoor courtyard any time of the year.

A reviewer describes it this way:

“If only all clubs were this beautiful… From the original phys ed hall paint job to the bright Bauhaus-style accents and courtyard sculpture, this place puts all those dingy, undistinguished clubs to shame.”

Noorderschip, Best Clubs In Amsterdam, from veronicaschip.nl

Noorderschip night club is housed inside an old 50-metre-long pirate radio boat that has been docked in the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam North for years. Dancing on an old pirate boat could be quite a wild and fun experience. Guests can sit and sip a cold beer on the top deck after.

The club can accommodate 300 party people and club-goers to enjoy three levels of fun and dancing, including a terrace and a dancefloor that sits below sea level. Equipped with a Funktion-One sound system, Noorderschip is sure to get everybody dancing and laughing while you’re in Amsterdam.

The club is also known for its restaurant which specializes in a locally sourced vegetarian menu, as well as an event space that opens in the daytime for multimedia programs, courses, lectures, art exhibitions, and more.

AIR Amsterdam is the capital city’s newest, biggest, and brightest super-club for everyone. It’s known to offer parties on a ridiculously huge scale, with five bars, three separate rooms, and cutting-edge R&B, hip-hop, and dancehall sets, as well as state-of-the-art lighting and an LED wall.

AIR is located in the heart of Amsterdam’s vibrant nightlife area, where former discotheque IT set the atmosphere at Rembrandtplein in the 1990s and 2000s. AIR has since become a household name, known by all in the nightlife scene, especially among the new generation.

“This club is fine, the music (hip hop, RnB), big space and one dance hall,”

said a satisfied club-goer .

“It was super crowded…. But in general, the club is for people who like this kind of music,” while another one almost didn’t have the exact words to describe the experience:

“Great drinks. Great music. Nice mix of people. Would visit again, next visit. Funny seeing some people dancing like they were in a competition. Yummy cocktails.”

AIR Amsterdam is popular among international club-goers and has made it to the list of 100 best night clubs in the world year after year.

canvas, Best NightClubs In Amsterdam, from awesomeamsterdam.com

Canvas is more than the average nightclub one might see in the world. It’s one of Amsterdam’s coolest nightclubs located on the seventh floor of a former newspaper office, which is now a hotel, bar, and restaurant complex.

Guests and club-goers love coming here not only to dance and party, but also to grab a cocktail on one of the terraces and enjoy panoramic views of the capital. The event space is actually perched on top of the city, offering a 360º view through glass walls and from the rooftop terraces

Found in the industrial East of Amsterdam, Canvas plays amazing music to a fashionably young, multicultural audience, attracting both locals and travelers.

During the day, Canvas functions as a lunchroom and restaurant, and offers yoga classes and hot-tub sessions, but becomes a lively night event space on Friday and Saturday. The entrance fee is free.

Condé Nast Traveler describes what it’s like to party at Canvas: “Nights range pretty wildly from hip-hop bashes to electronic music and cassette parties, plus festival after-parties, and underground house sets by resident DJ Joel Hemmen. And, of course, this wouldn’t be Amsterdam without the odd techno event.”

Jimmy Woo, Best Clubs In Amsterdam, from clublistamsterdam.com

Jimmy Woo is the place to party and have fun when one wishes to go Asian. This is an exclusive two-floor nightclub with an Asian-themed bar and a dancefloor that is so bright and brilliant, that more than 12,000 bulbs pulsate in time to the music. Clubbing really doesn’t get more stylish. It’s no wonder it’s rated as one of the top nightclubs in Amsterdam to party in.

Jimmy Woo promises ultra-hip surroundings, which explains why the door policy is strict. Only a chosen few may enter, and those who have experience coming here can truly say that Jimmy Woo knows how to throw a party. They love COCO and consider it the best R&B and hip-hop night in town, while the Thursday Back To The ’90s party is jam-packed with guilty pleasures.

A lucky guest who got in talks about the experience:

“Sorry but I was lucky to experience the VIP lounge upstairs. I liked the atmosphere there (with) Dutch celebrities and royal family members.”

When in Amsterdam, make sure to spend your nights in one of these lovely, lively, and unforgettable party places. The city has so many to offer, and an amazing club experience is one of them.

Above are just some of the best nightclubs in Amsterdam. Feel free to get to know the city more and ask around for other cool places to hang out.

Best nightclubs in Amsterdam

Garage Noord

1.  Garage Noord

What is it?   An old car repair shop that transforms into a club after 10:30pm.

Why go?   Situated across the IJ in the north of Amsterdam,   Garage Noord   is an intimate club with a non-commercial feel. It plays a diverse range of music and prides itself on its progressive environment, one that channels the history of dance as a place that welcomes anyone.

2.  Radion

What is it?  An industrial haven for ravers in an unassuming slab of the city’s Nieuw-West district. Expect a banging sound system and ‘mini parties’ that kick off in the underground smoking room.

Why go?  It hosts the kind of pulsating techno that clobbers clubbers around the face and leaves them drenched in sweat from non-stop dancing. The club also has a 24-hour licence, meaning the dancing really can be non-stop. Take it from us; this is a seriously big night out. Oh, and you can even cop an ice lolly at the bar to cool down.

Melkweg

3.  Melkweg

What is it? Melkweg (that means ‘Milky Way’ in Dutch) is an all-purpose cultural venue in Amsterdam’s Leidseplein area. Originally a sugar refinery, this space now hosts gigs, club nights, and even shows movies.

Why go there? Melkweg is a venue with multiple rooms, meaning it often hosts wildly different club nights on the same day – a far cry from the techno-first approach of many other Amsterdam venues. Whether it’s reggaeton, DnB, or a myriad of other genres, there’s bound to be something on that tickles your fancy.

OT301

4.  OT301

What is it? A club that was taken over as a squat in 1999, 0T301 is the city’s most iconic night out. It’s now a legal venue, but hasn’t lost its rebellious vibe. Amidst it all, 0T301 has stayed true to its character (and cheap).

Why go? This is a no-judgement space, and one where you can completely let loose. But it’s also a social enterprise which is worth supporting, heavily involved with the activism and squatting scene in Amsterdam.

Radio Radio

5.  Radio Radio

What is it? A hidden gem nestled in Amsterdam’s Westerpark.

Why go? What happens when you mix a radio station, pizza restaurant, and night club? That’s right, Radio Radio . One of the newer clubs in Amsterdam, Radio Radio plays a mix of modern sounds from a cutting-edge array of DJs through a beefy sound system. It’s cosy and intimate, which only adds to its charm.

Club NYX

6.  Club NYX

What is it? NYX   is known for its cracking drag and LGBTQ+ nights, but  every  night here is gloriously welcoming to all. Expect three floors of dancehall, Dutch hip-hop and pop tunes.

Why go?  With a playlist of crowd-pleasing anthems and a friendly atmosphere, NYX is guaranteed to plant a toothy grin on your face. Plus, there’s a DJ in the open-plan bathroom – where else has that?

Canvas

7.  Canvas

What is it?  After dinner, the seventh floor of this former newspaper office – now a hotel, bar and restaurant complex – is cleared of tables and transforms into one of the city’s coolest clubs.

Why go?  If your dancing feet are feeling the strain, grab a cocktail and head out onto one Canvas ’s terraces to enjoy panoramic views across the city. The music caters to a fashionably young, multicultural audience, entrance is free, and there are even hot tubs on the roof (though they’re not always in use).

Vondelbunker

8.  Vondelbunker

What is it?  If you like a side of vintage with your night out, you’ll love this 1940s bunker. Not exactly a club, more of a live music venue and bar, the Vondelbunker space was originally constructed as an atomic bomb shelter in the wake of the Second World War.

Why go?  Two words; free entry. There’s an all-inclusive DIY vibe here, allowing for some truly punk nights.

9.  Lofi

What is it? Set in an old bus warehouse, this club strives for something different.

Why go? With a spacious courtyard and a raw inside space, Lofi is a creative oasis in the Sloterdijk area of Amsterdam. Its goal is to bring culture and music together, creating a scene that differs from polished clubs, making something more authentic and, well, lofi.

Jimmy Woo

10.  Jimmy Woo

What is it?  An exclusive two-floor club with an Asian-themed bar and a dancefloor lit by more than 12,000 bulbs that pulse in time to the music. Clubbing really doesn’t get more stylish.

Why go?  The ultra-hip surroundings are only half the story – Jimmy Woo really knows how to throw a party. COCO is the best R&B and hip-hop night in town, while the Thursday Back To The ’90s party is a riot of guilty pleasures. Be warned, though – the door policy is strict, and it isn't clear what the criteria are.

Shelter

11.  Shelter

What is it?  Brutally brutalist, Shelter looks and sounds like it’s been stolen from Berlin and plonked in the Dutch capital. Find it in the basement of the A’dam Toren, a ferry away from Centraal.

Why go there?  Head to Shelter for an intense, unforgettable night out. It’s not for the faint-hearted. A 24-hour licence, all-black décor and a bassy sound system at ear-drum-perforating levels make this club one for the ’eads. So much hertz it hurts (in a good way).

The club is one big party room, complete with concrete walls and a purposeful lack of decor to eliminate any distraction from the music. Safety is of utmost importance here, with first aid booths and several designated chill zones available for when you need a moment to rest. While there is not a strict dress code, those wearing suits or football shirts in particular are not permitted entry. Note that the club is only open on the weekends, and it doesn’t take cash, so make sure to bring a card for any purchases you might make.

Escape is known for its strict dress code and long lines out the door, so get there early and dress to impress.

End your day in style across 2 floors of Eastern Asian influenced décor, fully stocked bars, and a never-ending lineup of big-name DJs. Best Hotel Executive Club Lounges In Amsterdam, Netherlands

popular post today

Best Hotel Executive Club Lounges In Amsterdam, Netherlands

We review the best executive club lounges at hotels and the best lounges at Amsterdam airport (AMS) separately.

Amsterdam is great. Cruise on a canal bus. Hop on and off at key attractions like the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt Square, and the Anne Frank House. Shop at big label boutiques on Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat and quirky, local shops in De 9 Straatjes, or hunt for bargains at the Waterlooplein and Albert Cuyp markets. Enjoy tulips in the spring and bike riding year-round.

I have compiled a list below containing the club lounges available across luxury hotels in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I list the lounges that I consider the best of the best. I will be reviewing each of these hotel club lounges in detail so that you know what you’ll get if you book a room with club lounge access or get upgraded to a club lounge for free because of your loyalty status.

1. Hyatt Regency Amsterdam

In our top spot offering the best hotel club lounge in Amsterdam is the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam . Awarded for its refreshing sustainable ‘living’ décor, the 5-star Hyatt Regency Amsterdam offers spacious botanical-inspired guestrooms, relaxing public spaces, a 24H Fitness Centre, and Mama Makan Indonesian Restaurant Bar & Terrace.

The lobby is fantastic. It feels like you’re in an Asian jungle. The rooms are modern and completely functional, many with a jungle hint too. This hotel is ideal for a business trip or World of Hyatt members looking for a club lounge and a luxury bed, but this hotel might not be for you if you are after something boutique in the heart of cobbled and canal-filled Amsterdam. This is a bold, modern, quirky Dutch jungly hotel!

The location is good, in the city center, bordering the trendy east neighborhood, 900 yards from Artis Zoo. Popular points of interest near Hyatt Regency Amsterdam include Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Rembrandt House, and Royal Theater Carré. The nearest airport is Schiphol Airport, 11.2 miles from the hotel. This Hyatt Regency Amsterdam also offers private parking, a fitness center, a bar, a restaurant, and a sauna.

The Hyatt Regency club lounge here is super stylish, one of the nicest we’ve seen, with dark wood parquet flooring and bold round globule lighting. During the day, light snacks like rice crackers, fruit, cookies, nuts (including delicious smoked almonds), and cake can be scoffed. There is a decent spread of appetizers in the evening, from cheese and cold cuts to fruits and small hot items, along with complimentary beer and wine.

There is plenty of seating at tables and on sofas, and lovely windows look outwards and let in plenty of natural light.

Globalist world of Hyatt members can take breakfast in the club lounge or downstairs at the street level at the Mama Makan brasserie-style restaurant. The restaurant offers a fusion of Dutch and Indonesian food for lunch and dinner and an excellent European breakfast buffet in the morning. The extensive buffet includes a wide selection of juices, fresh fruit, bread, pastries, muesli, and other cereals, and hot items like scrambled eggs, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Omelets and waffles can be ordered to the table. Pick a seat by the window, and you can watch the world go by over a coffee for hours!

2. Amsterdam Marriott

The Amsterdam Marriott is currently a Rewards category 6 Marriott Bonvoy hotel. It boasts an unparalleled location across the Leidseplein, just moments from Amsterdam city centre’s most celebrated shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations, including the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Vondelpark.

This Leidseplein location is particularly good for the Casino, and a multitude of bars, restaurants, and nightlife just steps away, plus the airport bus drops you off right across from the hotel, which is terribly useful. In addition, this hotel hosts one of Amsterdam’s premier city center event facilities featuring 8,740 square feet of contemporary event spaces.

In the evening, unwind with hand-crafted cocktails in their bar before dining on juicy steaks and local produce at their delectable steakhouse. Retreat to renovated accommodations with sleek bathrooms, impeccable modern design accents, and natural materials. Other assets include a 24-hour fitness center and a soothing sauna.

This club lounge is open on weekends and offers free wireless in the lounge. Full breakfast is in the main restaurant and is excellent with everything you could want, including eggs made to order, pancakes, and waffles. The lounge is open throughout the day & for evening snacks and complimentary drinks.

The executive club lounge has also been recently renovated, but it can be very busy with no chairs available and food offered with a bit of a rugby scrum vibe. However, the food is excellent in the evenings, with hot offerings like chicken satay with salads. Enough for an entire dinner. This lounge is one of the best in Amsterdam.

Platinum Marriott Bonvoy members get free lounge access, including free breakfast, light snacks, and beverages throughout the day and evening drinks and canapes.

3. Renaissance Amsterdam

The Renaissance Amsterdam is labeled as a five star hotel, but it is not a patch on the Marriott outlined above. The Marriott offers a better club lounge, nicer refurbished rooms, and a better location.

Renaissance Amsterdam is located near Herengracht Canal and is a 25-minute walk from Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The movie Museum is only 2 km away. This location isn’t great. It does, however, offer a club lounge that is open throughout the weekend (on weekends, you eat breakfast in the main hotel restaurant).

4. Hilton Amsterdam

The Hilton Amsterdam has a very decent club lounge with great food, morning and night, six different liquor choices, beer, and wine. Service is also attentive here, but the lounge can get very crowded in the evening (too crowded at capacity). At these times, they offer vouchers for the bar in the lobby.

The hotel is a bit out of the way, although you can take the tram pretty much anywhere in Amsterdam. The bonus of the location is that it is fairly quiet in the Hilton’s hotel rooms at night.

5. Sheraton Schiphol Airport

The contemporary Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel is directly connected to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol via a covered walkway and is ideal for layovers. The hotel is easy to walk to on the sky bridge. It’s on the left shortly after you leave the moving walkway.

The hotel is only a short 3-minute walk away from the airport’s arrivals and departures hall and 20 minutes away from the city center of Amsterdam. Relax and unwind in one of their 407 modern and stylish soundproofed guest rooms or suites with their signature Sheraton Sleep Experience® bed.

The Club Lounge is on the 8th floor and has a good selection of breakfast items and evening snacks. It feels like a business club lounge, but this hotel should also be considered for a leisure trip to Amsterdam. Trains go from Schipol to Amsterdam Central every 10 minutes, and the station is a few steps away from the hotel entrance. You don’t even have to go outside due to the enclosed walkway. You can buy a multi-day transport pass so you can get around anywhere you like for a set fee, so in terms of a cheap and convenient base, the Sheraton Schiphol Airport ticks all the boxes.

Other Marriott Bonvoy hotels in The Netherlands include Hotel Nassau in Breda, which is part of the Autograph Collection and does not have a club lounge, Hotel Van Oranje by Autograph Collection in Noordwijk aan Zee with no club lounge, and Hotel des Indes in Amsterdam without a club lounge. There is also a Marriott in The Hague and Rotterdam, both with decent club lounges.

You may be wondering about your ihg options in Amsterdam too. There is a beautiful InterContinental Amsterdam that we reviewed and that does not offer a club lounge but is a fantastic, historic hotel and our luxury travel concierge offers great free benefits at this property. The Andaz Amsterdam is another great hotel choice without a club lounge, and again, we offer free benefits here too.

A crowd of dance music fans on the dancefloor at Amsterdam club De Marktkantine. The image is taken from behind the DJ booth, where a DJ is using digital decks to play music.

10 of the best clubs in Amsterdam – chosen by the experts

Amsterdam’s nightlife is thriving, with three major new clubs adding to the existing scene. We asked local DJs, producers and music writers to name their favourite party venues

De Marktkantine

De Marktkantine has been around for about two years. For me, it’s the most unappreciated club in the city even though the programming is high-quality, and varied. There are other clubs in Amsterdam that are trying hard to trademark a certain style but Marktkantine is more relaxed about who can come in. You can still see the balconies and booths from when it was a theatre. The balcony is particularly large and gives a great view down onto the stage. Then, behind the stage there are stairs up to another level with a small bar. They just started a new series of nights, curated by DJ and producer duo Red Axes, with shows every couple of months. The first edition was a success and musically it was amazing. Jan van Galenstraat 6, marktkantine.nl Nicky Elisabeth, DJ, soundcloud.com/nicky-elisabeth

At night, the entrance to the Amsterdam club Shelter is viewed; in the image steps lead down to the club.

Shelter is among the newest additions to the city’s club scene. Finally, a club in the north side of Amsterdam! The venue opened during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) 2016 and is in the basement of the former Shell tower, hence the name. Standing in front of the entrance you immediately get that underground vibe. Literally. On club nights the venue opens a hatch, which you walk down to get inside. You enter a spacious, concrete room with a very good sound system. It’s dark, but not too dark – you can see who’s dancing next to you. The crowd is really open – whether you play house or techno, people follow your lead. And, with its 24-hour permit, nights merge easily into mornings. Overhoeksplein 3 , shelteramsterdam.nl TITIA, DJ, soundcloud.com/djtitia

Tolhuistuin

Exterior, wide shot of Tolhuistuin club in Amsterdam, taken at night.

We deliberately picked the Tolhuistuin for our club night, Progress Bar, which focuses on a more socially and politically aware take on club culture. We mix talks, screenings, performance and clubbing into one night. Just a short ferry ride across the IJ from Central Station, Amsterdam Noord prides itself on an edgier and raw atmosphere – that still persists amid the gentrification. Tolhuistuin is a good example of this. It’s in the canteen of the old Shell factory, an industrial remnant that has been repurposed as a cultural destination offering a mix of music, theatre and exhibitions, bringing together mainstream and more avant garde, free-spirited programming. IJpromenade 2 , tolhuistuin.nl Chee Yee Tang, organiser of Sonic Acts Festival

A dining area at De School club in Amsterdam. The daytime image shows desks and chairs used as places to dine in a large, communal room.

This place is more than a club: it is also one of the best restaurants in town, a bar, a gym and it shows great art that you can still see during club hours. There are also two other venue spaces, Muzieklokaal and s105, for smaller nights and live shows – and the garden is our favourite spot to hang out on summer nights. There is a great creative energy around this whole building. Of course, the club itself is amazing. It’s exactly what you want: intimate-feeling, but big enough to get lost in, with crisp sound and a sense of freedom. Dr Jan van Breemenstraat 1 , deschoolamsterdam.nl Orpheu de Jong and Hugo van Heijningen, founders of Red Light Radio

Sugarfactory

Crowds dance under the lights at club Sugarfactory, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Years ago this building used to be a … sugar factory, but since the venue opened its doors in 2005 – near the centre of Amsterdam – it has been home to Wicked Jazz Sounds, our weekly Sunday club night. We came from a club without any facilities, so by comparison the Sugar Factory felt like getting into a warm bath and then being embraced by lovely, caring people. This club holds up to 500 people but still feels intimate, has a great sound, an amazing amount of lights, and a wide variety of programming, every day of the week. Lijnbaansgracht 238 , sugarfactory.nl Phil Horneman and Manne van der Zee, founders of Wicked Jazz Sounds which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year

A view from the stage at club OT301, Amsterdam, which takes in a large crowd of people dancing under vibrant spotlights.

OT301 is a real Amsterdam heartthrob. The former squat packs in 300 people for experimental and rowdy club nights, concerts and collaborations. Think nights hosted by Rush Hour, Sub:Terrein, Sonic Acts and our own club night, Somewhere Else. The multi-storied, graffiti-covered building holds a club, a tiny underground dance room, a gallery space, a vegan restaurant and a cinema. Subbacultcha has hosted nights at OT301 from the beginning, so we decided it was fitting to celebrate our 10th anniversary last year with a takeover – filling every inch of the OT301 with emerging music. Overtoom 301 , ot301.nl Chosen by the team at Subbacultcha magazine

Oedipus Brewing

A crowd at Oedipus Brewery, Amsterdam, listen to an intimate performance.

The home of Amsterdam’s new favourite local brew, Oedipus, is a gem in Amsterdam Noord. The brewery is a simple spot that offers a few beers on tap, an empty space for dancing and a couple of benches out front. DJ Broadcast had its fundraiser there this year, which was a blast. Catch Red Light Radio’s much-loved Liquid Jams on a given Sunday, when a band is invited to perform amid the beer barrels. And don’t miss the famed Brazil in the Brewery nights that brings the vibes, music and atmosphere of hot Brazilian nights. Gedempt Hamerkanaal 85 , oedipus.com Chosen by the team at Subbacultcha magazine

Ornate chandeliers hang from the ceiling in thsi scene of the plush and colourful reception area at club Claire, Amsterdam.

There is obviously a diverse array of clubs in Amsterdam; I love De School for good sound and a night of raw energy; OT301, which is cosy and raw. One club that deserves a special shout out is Claire, where I have a residency, and which has given me the opportunity to grow as a DJ. Claire has great acoustics, a wonderful wooden floor and feels like a living room! Unfortunately it’s in in the not-so-soulful area of Rembrandtplein, though the club itself is a soulful place. It opened during last year’s Amsterdam Dance Event and its lineup presents a great mix of underground artists, from Volcov to the Parisian Antinote crew. Rembrandtplein 17 , claire.nl Margie, resident on Red Light Radio and runs Rush Hour Magazine, soundcloud.com/akamargie

A packed dancefloor under strobing lights at Club NYX in Amsterdam.

For me, Club NYX is a little bit more “free” than the rest of Amsterdam’s clubs. It’s a three-floor venue and on the third floor, which is the toilet, there’s also a DJ booth – so you can dance and pee and wash your hands in this big penis-shaped sink. The decorations are “out there”: there are neon words everywhere and stairs that go nowhere. The first few times I went I got lost and every time I take someone for the first time they get lost too. Throughout the week there are a lot of parties that focus on being inclusive. It’s still a gay club really, but on Thursday nights it has parties that are for everyone. There’s a regular night, called Vogue, where there are these ballroom parties. Everyone puts on wigs, big dresses and just dances; it’sfun. My friends and I love going because (and it sounds really stupid) it feels like everyone is in it together. Reguliersdwarsstraat 42 , clubnyx.nl Lyzza, DJ and producer, soundcloud.com/lysadasilva

De Trut has been going for around 32 years and I’ve been going for 17 of them. It’s only open on Sundays, from 10pm-3am, held in a a former squat that is now a foundation: everyone works there voluntarily and all the money from the club goes to LGBT-related projects. The venue is a cement basement, but is very colourful; there are all these televisions showing gay, or lesbian porn (though now not so much). It’s kitsch, but they also fight for their ideals. By 9pm there’s always a queue and only about 250 people can fit in, and there’s no guestlist. No photography is allowed, either. It’s an amazing place to go if you’re gay. Bilderdijkstraat 165-E , trutfonds.nl Carlos Valdes, resident DJ for LET and organiser of Is Burning club night, soundcloud.com/carlosvaldesmuzik

hi, I have a question about ADE: which are the most important clubs and parties? And it is allowed or forbidden to smoke inside the club?

' src=

Hi! Almost all clubs in Amsterdam are part of ADE and they have different line-ups and parties each year. Check the website of ADE when the programming is listed. Almost all clubs have a smoking area. It’s not allowed to smoke anywhere inside public buildings in The Netherlands, and this includes clubs.

There are some clubs missing I see which are absolutely worth a visit!

A Solo Traveler's Guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Discovering a new place alone opens up many possibilities, and traveling solo means that adventurous individuals can completely set their own agendas. However, getting the most out of a city isn’t always easy, and sometimes even the most experienced traveler needs a little help. Fortunately, we’ve done the research and put together a short guide for solo travelers heading to Amsterdam, covering the best spots to hang out alone, or meet other like-minded people.

Where to stay.

There are a number of hotels and hostels in Amsterdam that are purposely designed to foster casual get-togethers. Volkshotel, for example, is an extremely trendy establishment that takes hospitality to a whole new level, and encourages its guests to mingle with each other inside the hotel’s numerous, socially driven facilities. For more party-focused accommodation, it’s best to look for places in central Amsterdam, such as the Flying Pig Downtown, the Bulldog Hotel and St Christopher’s at Winston Hotel, all of which are cannabis-friendly and specifically cater to night owls.

The Volkshotel is a great place to meet quieter travelers

What to see and do

The Stedelijk

After dark, it is worth checking out Amsterdam’s nightclubs and concert venues. Disco Dolly is open well into the early morning every day of the week and plays classic hits. At the weekend, De School , Shelter or Radion , regularly organize parties that feature internationally recognized DJs, and each of these clubs holds a 24-hour license. For live performances, OT301 , de Nieuwe Anita , and OCCII all host concerts throughout the week, and have deep ties with the local music scene.

Where to meet people

Although there are thousands of bars in Amsterdam, striking up a conversation with strangers can be tricky, as many people aren’t looking to make new friends. Fortunately, there are several watering holes that attract amicable clientele. Coco’s Outback on Rembrandtplein is notorious for its parties and also screens international football matches. Meanwhile, the Hill Street Blues in the Red Light District has a quieter atmosphere and allows guests to spark up joints in its smoking area.

Coco’s Outback is just behind the Rembrandt statue on Rembrandtplein

Before officially launching new exhibitions, most galleries and museums in Amsterdam organize night time events that are open to the public. The Van Gogh Museum also regularly hosts a party called Vincent on Friday , which features live DJs, artwork and cocktails.

Coffeeshops are obviously a great place to meet fellow smokers, and places like Barney’s , the Bulldog Palace and Dampkring are known for their friendly ambience. Many venues around Amsterdam also host LGBT parties throughout the week, which are welcoming towards locals, foreigners and tourists.

Once a week Vrankrijk throws a LGBT party

Practical tips

To get around the city, it is always advisable to rent out a bike from a reputable cycling store. Having a bicycle in tow means getting from one place to another literally takes minutes, and allows solo travelers to experience Amsterdam from a new perspective . Alternatively, buying an extended ticket from a tram or train station makes it much easier to hop on public transport.

Obviously, pick up a bike as soon as possible

Despite Amsterdam’s reputation among drug tourists, cannabis is highly regulated in the Netherlands, and other substances are simply illegal. Although it might be tempting to purchase weed on the street, it is never worth the risk, as quality cannabis can easily be purchased from coffeeshops , while buying other drugs is exceptionally dangerous and dealers can often lie about their content.

Always buy weed from a certified coffeeshop

Amsterdam Hotels

Make it an unforgettable stay in amsterdam.

The city of Amsterdam began as a small fishing village, something quite common since it's a city that developed on the coast. In the 12th century, a dam was built across the Amstel River and this is what gave the town its name: Amsteldam. Historically, it was a very major city for trade, thanks to the port of Rotterdam. Amsterdam is currently the intellectual center of the Netherlands. Discover this great city and let yourself be enticed by all of its wonderful spots.

Let’s dance through the unique, the iconic, and the unabashedly fun venues that define the night in this unparalleled city.

1. Supperclub

Overview: In a city celebrated for its dynamic nightlife and culinary experiences, The Supperclub offers an unrivaled fusion of both. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, this venue isn’t just about dining; it’s an immersive experience that combines innovative cuisine, performance art, and music into a feast for the senses.

After dinner, the space transforms into a vibrant club where the energy ramps up, and the night takes on a life of its own.

Supperclub - Cool clubs in Amsterdam

Practical Tips: Reservations for The Supperclub are highly recommended, as this popular experience tends to book up quickly. When planning your visit, keep an open mind and be ready for anything; the night’s theme can range from the extravagant to the surreal. Dressing up is encouraged, aligning with the evening’s theme or simply showcasing your personal style adds to the immersive experience.

Navigating The Supperclub

  • Dining Experience: Embrace the unconventional dining setup and be prepared for a menu that’s as creative and varied as the performances. Dietary preferences can usually be accommodated with advance notice.
  • Transition to Club: Post-dinner, the venue transitions into a full-blown nightclub. Stick around to enjoy a variety of DJ sets and music genres, perfect for working off the evening’s indulgences on the dance floor.

2. Paradiso

Overview: What was once a reverent congregation’s church has transformed into one of Amsterdam’s most sacred music temples. Paradiso, located near the bustling Leidseplein, is an iconic venue that has welcomed everyone from Pink Floyd to Lady Gaga, serving as a musical mecca for over half a century.

What Makes It Unique: The beauty of Paradiso lies not just in its stained glass windows or the majestic balcony arches but in its incredible acoustics and intimate atmosphere, no matter the scale of the event. It’s a place where the barrier between artist and audience feels remarkably thin, creating unforgettable live music experiences. The venue’s lineup is a kaleidoscope of genres, offering everything from rock and indie to electronic and hip-hop, making every visit a unique discovery.

Paradiso - Cool clubs in Amsterdam

Practical Tips: Tickets for shows at Paradiso can sell out fast, especially for big names, so snagging them early is wise. While the venue itself is a must-see, don’t miss the chance to explore the surrounding area of Leidseplein, teeming with late-night eateries and bars for pre or post-concert gatherings. The club operates a cloakroom, so you can dance and jump without baggage literally hanging off your shoulders.

Navigating Paradiso

  • Membership Requirement: Paradiso operates with a membership system, but fear not—this can often be included in the ticket price for a nominal fee, granting you access to a world of musical enchantment.
  • Arrival Tips: Given its central location, Paradiso is easily reachable by tram or bike, Amsterdam’s preferred modes of transport. Arriving a bit early can help you avoid long lines and secure a good spot, especially for sold-out shows.

Overview: A stone’s throw away from Paradiso, Melkweg (The Milky Way) offers its own universe of cultural and musical exploration. Originating as a dairy factory, this multi-room venue now hosts an eclectic mix of concerts, club nights, cinema screenings, and art exhibitions, making it a cornerstone of Amsterdam’s cultural scene.

What Makes It Unique: Melkweg’s charm lies in its ability to offer something for everyone. Whether you’re there for an indie band, a hip-hop act, or a techno DJ, the venue ensures a close-up experience with your favorites. Its programming is diverse, featuring rising stars and established names, and the multiple spaces within mean you can often choose between different vibes on the same night.

Melkweg

Practical Tips: Like Paradiso, Melkweg also operates on a membership model, but this is typically included in the ticket price for ease. Checking out the lineup in advance and booking tickets online is recommended, as events can sell out quickly. Don’t forget to explore the Lijnbaansgracht canal area around the venue, perfect for a serene stroll to end the night.

Navigating Melkweg

  • Best Spots for Shows: The venue has several spaces, from the intimate Oude Zaal (Old Hall) to the larger Max, each offering a different experience. Depending on the show, arriving early can help you get a spot close to the stage or a comfortable balcony view in the Max.
  • Late-Night Snacks: The area around Melkweg is ripe with options for post-gig cravings. From classic Dutch fries to international cuisine, you won’t have to venture far to find a satisfying end to your night.

Overview: Tucked away beneath the A’DAM Tower’s looming presence, just a swift ferry ride across the IJ River from Central Station, Shelter offers an underground haven for techno enthusiasts. Its location is as symbolic as it is practical, representing a threshold between the mainstream and the underground, a literal and figurative journey into the depths of Amsterdam’s nightlife .

What Makes It Unique: Shelter’s commitment to quality sound and an immersive experience is unparalleled. With a state-of-the-art sound system that reverberates through the body, the club is a pilgrimage site for those who worship at the altar of techno. The minimalist design, accentuated by the club’s meticulous attention to lighting, sets the perfect stage for losing yourself in the music.

Shelter - Cool clubs in Amsterdam

Practical Tips: The club’s somewhat secluded location makes it a journey worth planning. The free ferry service from Central Station to the A’DAM Tower is not only convenient but offers stunning nighttime views of the IJ River, setting the mood for the night ahead. Shelter operates with a no-photo policy, encouraging a fully present experience and a chance to disconnect from the digital world.

Navigating Shelter

  • Door Policy: Shelter is known for its inclusive but selective door policy, aiming to cultivate a safe and respectful atmosphere. Being polite and patient with the door staff is key.
  • After Hours: As one of the few clubs in Amsterdam with a 24-hour license, Shelter often hosts after-parties that stretch well into the morning, perfect for night owls and early birds alike.

5. Club NYX

Overview: A vibrant splash on the canvas of Amsterdam’s nightlife, Club NYX is a three-story venue in the Reguliersdwarsstraat area, the heart of the city’s LGBTQ+ scene. Named after the Greek goddess of the night, NYX embodies a space where freedom and self-expression are not just welcomed but celebrated.

What Makes It Unique: Club NYX’s atmosphere is a kaleidoscope of diversity, reflecting the city’s inclusive spirit. Each floor offers a different musical flavor, from pop anthems on the ground floor to deep house and techno in the basement. The venue is centrally located, making it easily accessible by tram, bike, or foot from most parts of the city.

Navigating Club NYX

  • Best Nights to Go: While weekends are a safe bet for a high-energy crowd, weekday nights often host unique events and themed parties worth exploring.
  • Safety and Inclusivity: NYX prides itself on being a safe space for everyone. Respectful behavior is paramount, and the club has a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment, ensuring a night of fun and freedom.

6. AIR Amsterdam

Overview: Nestled in the vibrant heart of Amsterdam’s Rembrandtplein, AIR Amsterdam has carved out its niche as a hotspot for electronic dance music enthusiasts. With its stylish, futuristic interior and commitment to sustainability, AIR redefines the clubbing experience with a blend of high-tech ambiance and eco-consciousness.

The club offers a unique electronic locker system, allowing guests to safely store their belongings and recharge their phones, so you’re ready to capture the night’s best moments or simply stay connected.

Navigating AIR Amsterdam

  • Dress Code: AIR encourages a smart casual dress code, blending comfort with a touch of flair to match the club’s modern aesthetic.
  • VIP Experience: For those looking to elevate their night, AIR offers VIP tables with exclusive bottle service, providing a more intimate and luxurious clubbing experience.

7. Warehouse Elementenstraat

Overview: Tucked away in the industrial outskirts of Amsterdam, Warehouse Elementenstraat holds a storied place in the city’s techno scene. This legendary venue, with its raw, unpolished aesthetic, channels the spirit of the underground raves of the 90s, offering a no-frills space where the music takes center stage.

What Makes It Unique: Warehouse Elementenstraat’s authenticity lies in its simplicity and historical significance. The venue has retained its industrial charm, with high ceilings, concrete floors, and minimalistic lighting, creating an atmosphere that’s all about the communal experience of music. It’s a pilgrimage site for techno purists, renowned for hosting marathon sets from some of the genre’s most respected figures.

Practical Tips: The club’s location, while contributing to its underground vibe, means planning your visit is essential. Public transport options are limited late at night, so consider ride-sharing or biking. The venue is known for its long events, often running till dawn or later, so prepare for a marathon rather than a sprint. Comfortable attire is a must, as the focus here is purely on the music and dance.

Navigating Warehouse Elementenstraat

  • Getting There: Check the latest transport schedules or arrange a ride. The journey is part of the adventure, leading you to one of Amsterdam’s most authentic club experiences.
  • Event Schedule: Keep an eye on the club’s social media for event announcements and ticket releases. Warehouse Elementenstraat’s events are high in demand and often sell out quickly.

8. RADION Amsterdam

Overview: Tucked in the evolving urban landscape of Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West district, RADION Amsterdam is a beacon of cultural and electronic music innovation. This multi-purpose space, housed in a former dental clinic, has morphed into one of the city’s most dynamic venues, offering a blend of club nights, art exhibitions, and community events.

What Makes It Unique: RADION’s charm lies in its ability to seamlessly integrate the cutting-edge of electronic music with a broad spectrum of cultural activities. Its programming is as diverse as its audience, spanning underground techno parties, live performances, and even avant-garde art shows. The venue’s commitment to cultural enrichment makes it more than just a club; it’s a space where the arts converge in celebration.

RADION - Cool clubs in Amsterdam

Practical Tips: Due to its location away from the city center, planning your trip to RADION is advisable. Public transport does service the area, but check schedules as they can be less frequent at night. The club’s atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, so feel free to dress comfortably. A guide to the nightlife in Amsterdam

Updated On 3rd February, 2024

There is so much diversity to the nightlife in Amsterdam, and in this beautiful city, there really is something to suit every single one of you.

Whether your thing is a chilled out dinner by the canal, a few cocktails in a rooftop bar, or throwing shapes in a nightclub until early hours of the morning, Amsterdam caters beyond your expectations with every option.

I know that before I came to Amsterdam for the first time last year, all I could imagine about the social side of the city and the nightlife was marijuana and getting high. Because, let’s face it, we all have friends or know people that come to do exactly that. And of that, yes, there is a lot.

But there is also so much more to Amsterdam.

A guide to the nightlife in Amsterdam

If ‘happy lazy days’  are  your kinda thing, there are more than enough coffee shops to keep you occupied here in Amsterdam, but it’s not  my  kinda thing (I tried it once, had too much, felt sick and went to bed). So, I’m going to focus this post on the alternative nightlife options in Amsterdam.

During my 4-day visit to Amsterdam, we had a bit of a  mad one  and managed to try out a fair few bars and clubs in that time.  I believe it was necessary action to conduct my research. Justified?

Here is my guide to nightlife in Amsterdam…

Hostel nightlife in amsterdam.

We stayed in hostels during our stay in Amsterdam and, as always, the nightlife that comes with them is a popular choice of mine. As they go, hostels will usually have an in-house bar filled with travellers from all over the world, ready to share stories and line up the shots. If you’re looking for a party buddy, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find an accomplice in a hostel. It’s all about the ‘yolo’ and the social atmosphere in hostels.

Most hostels open their bar up to the public, bar The  Flying Pig hostel  (where we stayed for 2 nights), whose bar was totally epic, but for residents only.

A guide to the nightlife in Amsterdam

St Christopher’s Inn at the Winston ,  however, where we also stayed for 2 nights , is  open to the public and you are all welcome to come down and join the fun.

The hostel bar is actually named  Belushis  (that’s the sign to look out for when walking down Warmoesstraat) and doubles up as a restaurant too, showing all the sport you could wish for on big TVs alongside a delicious international menu  (the nachos and half-chicken were my favourites!)

St Christopher’s  is the perfect place for a few bevvies to warm up and grab some food to line the stomach!

They have an outdoor terrace if the sun is shining, plus an abundance of indoor seating and even a nightclub (The Winston Kingdom) to continue the party as the city turns to twilight. There were queues every night to get into the club so it is definitely a popular choice centrally.

Hostels are either your thing, or they’re not. But, you have to try everything at least once!

A guide to the nightlife in Amsterdam

Red Light District

Whilst we rested our heads in The Winston Hostel, we were pretty much located right in the Red Light District, and so, of course, we had a wander through. The Red Light District is right in the centre of the city and is lined with red lights, ladies in doorways and (there’s no other way of putting it…) sex shows, very drunk tourists, coffee shops and strip clubs.

The Red Light District is something that Amsterdam is famous for and, whilst you may not want to hang around all evening, it’s definitely worth an observation. New experiences and all.

If you couldn’t think of anything worse than the above, I’d stay well clear of the centre in the evenings!

Cocktails in Amsterdam

One of my absolute favourite things to do when I visit a new city is to enjoy a few cocktails over a beautiful view of the city (or the ocean, should it be nearby).

The centre of Amsterdam however, isn’t quite on the ocean front, and it lays pretty flat so there are no raised parks, areas or peaks to enjoy the view. The best options in Amsterdam lie within the rooftop bars, which Amsterdam, to my delight, has a wonderful selection of.

My favourites are  Sky Lounge  (which served up one of the best Mojitos I’ve set my tastebuds on) which is perfect combined with the sunset and  Mr.Porter  (part of the W Hotel collection).

Another cocktail bar and restaurant actually that I absolutely HAVE to mention is  Bo Cinq . It’s located on Prisengracht, near Vondelpark, so if you’re staying central like we were, hop on one of the taxi bikes, and take the scenic route along the canals.  The cocktails and dining menu are honestly out of this world.  It definitely holds a more sophisticated atmosphere than the likes of a hostel, and is the kind of place you could pop on a dress and heels to go to.  (If you are having a romantic weekend away, go here!)

Door 74  is another more sophisticated option, offering exclusive cocktails behind a hidden door which you can only find and enter through by messaging  the number . Naughty.

The Flying Dutchmen  and  Vesper  are both also meant to be great for cocktails, but I didn’t have time to visit these. Next time!

A guide to the nightlife in Amsterdam

Nightclubs in Amsterdam

Aside from embracing the backpacker vibes at The Flying Pig Hostel and The Winston, we headed ‘out-out’ with my friend who lives here in Amsterdam and explored some of her favourite clubs.

Apparently made for Friday nights (and not so much Saturdays) first up was  Elephant du Congo  where we honestly had  the best  time dancing to old school classics.  Elephant du Congo  is located just outside of the centre on Amsterdam’s most famous gay street (Reguliersdwarsstraat), which is lined with other bars and clubs that are buzzing by night also.

Second up was  Jimmy Woo ‘s which, on first impressions, was a little pretentious and not my choice of scene. The upstairs has a ‘book your tables and buy your belvedere vodka’ kinda vibe, but head downstairs and the live DJs are playing and the all night dancers are boogying! Entry is 15€.

Other places you can put on your dancing shoes include…

  • Sugar Factory
  • Chin Chin club
  • Bar Bukowski

Unique nights out in Amsterdam include…

  • Karaoke at  Duke of Tokyo
  • Chilling out at the  Ice Bar
  • Games night at  Ton Ton Club

I think I’m going to have to come back and do some more ‘research’!  Amsterdam, I’ll see you very soon!

Buying Guide

In 2018 alone, $761.7 billion was spent on travel for leisure and another $327.3 billion was spent on business travel. If you find yourself traveling fairly often, you’ll want to invest in a quality traveler suitcase.

As you browse available suitcases, you’ll notice they either come in a hard outer shell or a nylon fabric. The hard shell luggage is more durable, while the nylon fabric bag is more lightweight. If you do opt for the nylon suitcase, make sure it has a water and stain-resistant coating.

Determine how much space you require, as there are traveler suitcases that have the ability to expand. Typically, the expanders are able to give you as much as 15% more room.

If carrying a suitcase during travel is hard for you, you’ll want to look for a model that has both 360-degree spinner wheels and an adjustable telescoping handle. All you have to do is push a button to release the handle and then pull the bag to your destination.

Safety is also a concern, especially if the items you pack have sentimental or financial value. You have the option of going with a traveler suitcase that is already equipped with a TSA lock or purchasing one separately.

Key Takeawy

What to look for.

  • Most traveler suitcases come with an inside accessory pocket and a set of compression straps; however, there are some models that offer exterior and side pockets for better organization.
  • Review the airline’s limits on luggage size and weight. You don’t want to get to the airport and find out that your suitcase or carry-on weighs too much or is too big to fit in the overhead compartment.
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a website with all of the rules and regulations as to what you can and cannot pack in your bags.
  • Size and extra features play a big role in the price of traveler suitcases. You’ll find a suitcase that expands to 28-inches and is much bigger than other models will cost a great deal more. Additionally, the American Tourister Moonlight Spinner Luggage, 21-Inch has a hard outer shell that makes it a bit more expensive then the Rockland Softside Upright Traveler Suitcase, 2-Piece, which is made out of a softer and less costly material.

Entrance of Travellers Club

The Travellers Club was founded in 1819 by a cohort led by Lord Castlereagh and in 1832 moved to its present purpose-built clubhouse designed by Charles Barry. The Club's founding ethos was to establish a meeting place for like-minded gentlemen who had travelled abroad, and where they could also entertain foreign visitors and diplomats posted to London.

Members of the Diplomatic Service, the Home Civil Service and the Armed Forces have traditionally formed the backbone of the Travellers Club and we continue to have many among our members.
