Best mudguards and fenders 2024 | Our recommendations plus a complete buyer's guide

Do you need full mudguards, clip-ons or something in between?

Dave Caudery / Our Media

A set of the best mudguards and fenders is an essential accessory for any cyclist who wants to ride all year round.

There are few things more unpleasant than getting a wet backside when cycling in the rain , and the protection from the best waterproof jackets for cyclists is wasted if your rear wheel is sending spray up your back.

Mudguards also do a fine job of keeping your bike clean , reducing the amount of maintenance you have to do and greatly increasing the longevity of your components.

As a result, adding mudguards is a great way to get your road bike winter-ready .

On longer rides, the boost to morale of being dry and comfortable on your bike is also immeasurable. A few audax events and randonneuring bodies (and some clubs) even require your bike to be fitted with mudguards as a courtesy when riding in a group .

As with seemingly everything in the cycling world, choosing the right mudguards or fenders for you and your bike isn’t always the most simple task.

First, you need to determine whether your bike has the eyelets required for full mudguards or if you need a clip-on set (that's usually the case for race bikes, which are less likely to have mudguard eyelets). You also need to think about tyre width and clearance – the best winter road bike tyres tend to be wider than summer slicks.

But worry no longer, because our recommendations below present the best mudguards, while our full buyer's guide at the bottom of this article will help you demystify the world of staying dry on a bike.

The best mudguards and fenders for road and commuting bikes 2024

SKS P35 mudguards

  • £44.99 / $47.99 as tested
  • Tried-and-tested chromoplastic construction
  • Available in just about every bike shop

Our SKS P35 review dates from way back in 2008 and, in that time… well, not a lot has changed.

The P35 – as well as its wider siblings, including the P45, P55, P65 and so on – has been in the SKS line-up for just about forever, and with good reason. The mudguards offer sensible and affordable practicality at a reasonable price point.

Add in extensive spares availability in nearly every bike shop in the land and you're onto a winner.

Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders

Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders

  • £109.99 / $129.99 as tested
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Flawless once fitted

The Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders cost twice as much as some full-length, aluminium mudguards in this list. But on wet rides, the protection they offer to you, your bike and riders behind you can be priceless.

Unless you're experienced at installing mudguards, Portland Design Works recommends asking your local bike mechanic to fit them for you. Either way, once in place, they don't rattle or move about even on broken roads and blustery conditions.

The Full Metal Fenders come in matte black or polished silver. We tested the 700 x 45mm size for a maximum tyre width of 35mm. Narrower and wider options are available for 700c and 650b wheels .

Bontrager NCS

Trek Checkpoint AL4 with fenders

  • £44.99 / $59.99 / €54 as tested
  • Easy to fit and adaptable
  • Neat rear-light integration

Bontrager’s NCS mudguards are an easy-to-fit and affordable option available to wrap around tyres from 25mm all the way up to 45mm wide.

The mudguards use a neat pair of clamps on each stay that enable you to adjust their length without having to cut the stay.

This makes them super easy to fit for even the most mechanically inept home mechanic. It also makes the mudguards easy to adapt if you decide to fit different tyres on your bike. The included, high-quality stainless steel hardware is corrosion resistant and plentiful.

The mudguards have a distinctive round profile with no flattened section at the apex of the curve. This looks great when fitted but, in our experience, it can cause issues with clearances around the fork crown on certain bikes.

Unlike SKS’s chromoplastic mudguards, which sandwich a layer of alloy between plastic, the Bontrager NCS 'guards are a full polycarbonate construction.

Though this will give you years of service if well fitted, if poorly fitted and left to wobble away, we’ve found these to be more prone to cracking than other options.

Newer versions of the mudguards include an integrated Blendr mount for fitting Bontrager rear lights, which is nice to see.

Crud Roadracer MK3

Crud Roadracer MK3 mudguards

  • £39.99 / $53 / €47.49 as tested
  • Lightweight
  • Ideal for bikes with no eyelets

The Crud Roadracer is the go-to option for road bikes with no eyelets or tight clearances.

They can be a bit fiddly to fit and don't offer coverage that's as comprehensive as full-cover mudguards, but they're one of the best clip-on solutions out there.

While the MK2 version of the Roadracer used O-rings to attach the mudguards, the MK3 iteration now uses 'super Velcro' for a cleaner, fuss-free finish.

Honjo Koken

Honjo Koken mudguards

  • £89 / $125 as tested
  • Super high-end quality and finish
  • Wide range of sizes available

Japanese manufacturer Honjo makes some of the nicest mudguards out there, with quality that is pretty much unparalleled.

Naturally, such quality comes at a price and £90 / $125 is the starting point for a set of these very special mudguards.

A wide range of sizes is available through a number of international distributors, most notably Rene Herse (formerly Compass) in the US, which also ships internationally.

Kinesis Fend Off

Kinesis Fend Off full sized mud guard

  • £60 / $73.95 / €69 / AU$109 as tested
  • Wide tyre clearance
  • Additional flaps

The aluminium Kinesis Fend Off mudguards come in two colours, and the wide version costs £65. The maximum recommended tyre widths for each size are 34mm and 45mm respectively.

They’re around 200g heavier than their plastic rivals, at 637g, including hardware. Kinesis supplies most, but not all, fixings.

The polypropylene packaging is designed to be converted into flaps, with cutting guides and fixing bolts supplied.

The flat profile gives more tyre clearance, but they may touch your frame. Add the flaps and these stable ’guards are a great long-term choice for committed all-weather riders.

M-Part Primoplastic

M-Part Primoplastic full sized mud guard

  • £46.99 / €53 as tested
  • Fit extra-wide tyres
  • Rear reflector

M-Part offers the Primoplastic mudguards in five widths, from 38mm to 68mm, and different colours. The polycarbonate mudguards come with stays in stainless steel or black-coated stainless steel.

Their profile is classically rounded, and only trimmed to fit between the chainstays, so check the available width of your frame before choosing a size. The stays have Pop Off safety couplings, similar to SKS Secu-Clips.

Flexible flaps are stepped away from the tyre as they flare out, to intercept more spray. The rear also has a reflector. There’s good coverage at both ends, with the rear covering just over half of the 700c wheel.

The 68mm width easily covered the 45mm tyres on a gravel bike; 50mm tyres also fitted.

SKS Bluemels Longboard

SKS Bluemels Longboard full sized mud guard

  • £40 / $41.62 / €39.55 / AU$61.21 as tested
  • Solidly built

The SKS Bluemels Longboard have a classic, robust design and come in black, latte or silver Chromoplastic.

The front mudguard’s stainless steel stays fix easily to the fork leg or dropout with the SKS breakaway Secu-Clip.

Fitting the rear mudguard is easy too, but the rear stays don’t have the Secu-Clip. Excess stay can be cut off, and plastic end caps added to cover the sharp ends.

The 35mm width works for tyres up to 30mm, and the slim, snug-fitting mudguards enable easy adjustment for optimum positioning.

They simply refuse to rattle and their curved profile and generous lengths with rear flaps mean little spray escapes.

SKS Raceblade Long

SKS Raceblade mudguards

  • £54.99 / $59.99 / €44.99 as tested
  • A very secure fit for clip-on mudguards

SKS' Raceblade mudguards attach to bikes without eyelets using an ingenious set of clips that fit behind your quick-release skewer.

These give a much more secure attachment than typical clip-on solutions and make them easier to remove.

  • Read our full SKS Raceblade Long review

SKS Stingray

SKS Stingray mudguards

  • £41.99 / $42.99 / €32.99 as tested
  • Rock-solid fitment
  • Subtle and tasteful colour matching with your bike is possible

SKS's Stingrays are based on the modern P35 profile but add a fun, coloured layer that's sandwiched in using the brand's signature chromoplastic construction. This makes it possible to subtly and tastefully match the guards to the colour of your bike.

The mudguards offer generous coverage, though could benefit from having mud flaps added, and can often be found for a bargain price.

Specialized Dry-Tech

Best mudguards

  • £55 / $60 as tested
  • Super-wide coverage works well with chunky tyres
  • Plug-and-play compatibility with certain Specialized bikes

Specialized's alloy Dry-Tech mudguards are a great option if you want to use wide tyres or if you want to take advantage of the 'plug and play' compatibility the brand offers on certain models.

Fitting is fairly easy and the price is competitive compared to other alloy mudguards.

Velo Orange

Velo Orange alloy mudguard/fenders

  • £65 / $76 as tested
  • Highly durable
  • Available in large number of sizes and styles

Velo Orange's alloy mudguards are a firm favourite here at BikeRadar – coming in a huge variety of sizes and styles, there's an option to fit the vast majority of bikes.

Fitting them can be a bit of a fiddle, but if you invest the time it takes to do it well, you will be rewarded with a dry backside for years to come.

Mudguard and fender buyer's guide

Does your bike have mudguard eyelets.

mudguards-9-_-1476877435301-4vwj42chsitu-86dff8f

The first thing you must determine is what kind of mudguard your bike can run.

If your bike has eyelets (or braze-ons, as they’re also known), you should be able to run full-length mudguards.

Although these are a more permanent fixture, they are undoubtedly the best solution because they give the greatest level of coverage possible, are far less prone to wobbling and tend to last longer than clip-on solutions.

mudguards-6-_-1476877435291-fi9e7dnpzc8t-5e7b1db

If your bike doesn’t have eyelets and you want to fit full-cover mudguards, you may be able to use P-clips . These malleable rubber-coated metal clips clamp onto a frame tube, providing a makeshift eyelet. Be cautious if fitting P-clips to carbon frames – carbon is very susceptible to damage from compression. Other adaptors, such as Axiom's axle runners , are also worth investigating if your bike uses quick-release axles .

Although the situation has improved greatly, the placement of eyelets on some bikes can leave you wanting (particularly on bikes with disc brakes), so a little bit of jiggery-pokery, including bending stays, may be required.

All City Mr Pink mudguards

Though some will bemoan the permanence of full-length mudguards, they can look excellent if ‘integrated’ with the bike and really don’t take long to remove once set up.

Clip-on full-cover mudguards and fenders

Lights on white

If your bike doesn't have eyelets (many road bikes don't), and you cannot use one of the aforementioned workarounds, clip-on mudguards are your next best bet.

While clip-on mudguards give decent coverage, they're not as comprehensive as full-length mudguards.

Mudguards such as the SKS Raceblade Pro and Crud Roadracer use O-rings or Velcro wrapped around the frame to provide a relatively secure connection in lieu of eyelets. They provide a level of coverage comparable with, but not quite as thorough as, full-length mudguards.

1250864607489-18g7xk1buvx7x-1476877435266-1da7dtyz10o1o-454810f

Although their lightweight and sleek looks may seem appealing, be warned this style of mudguard is often a bit of a fiddle to set up and tends to wobble about more than full cover mudguards.

However, if your bike has especially tight clearances or lacks eyelets, these are the best options available.

Clip-on short mudguards and fenders

topeak-defender-1476877435306-1qr3sjycii99i-51d016a

Short clip-on mudguards, which typically attach to your seatpost, are your last option and give the least amount of coverage of all the styles of mudguards.

They’ll go a long way to stopping the cursed brown streak of muck up your back, but they’ll do little to protect your bike or legs from the elements.

However, for mountain bikes, or those that absolutely cannot stand the idea of full-cover mudguards, they’re the only option.

mudguards-4-_-1476877435283-qm4o3gea2pb1-ee08736

Clip-on mudguards come in two distinct styles – clamp-on style such as the venerable Topeak Defender and folding ones such as the popular Ass Saver.

Usually mounted under the saddle, fork crown or down tube, these will protect you from the worst spray and are best suited to mountain bikes.

What width of mudguard or fender should I buy?

Consider what width of mudguard is most appropriate for your tyres and the amount of clearance your frameset offers.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s best to err on the side of caution and fit the widest set of mudguards you can to your bike.

Not only does this future-proof your mudguard choice (allowing you to run wider tyres in future if you wish), it also increases the clearances between your mudguards and your tyre, greatly reducing the chance of something getting stuck in there.

On that note, SKS includes breakaway clips with its mudguards, which are designed to disconnect the stays of the mudguard from the bike in the event that something gets stuck between the tyre and the 'guards, preventing you from taking a flyer over the bars.

Be aware that the profile of some mudguards won’t play nicely on bikes with tight clearances, particularly around the fork crown, so it’s well worth doing some research online or popping into your local bike shop and having them fit you a set they know will work with your model of bike.

Gravel bike mudguards tend to be significantly wider than road bike mudguards to accommodate the width of gravel bike tyres .

Which full-cover mudguards and fenders should I buy?

First, it’s worth considering what you want your mudguards to be made of.

Starting at the high end, a nice set of alloy, full-cover mudguards are a very worthwhile investment that will last far longer than a set of regular, plastic 'guards.

mudguards-2-_-1476877435276-keraajsnd5qb-6f09977

Not only do they look handsome, but a set such as the Velo Orange mudguards recommended above only cost a bit more than a set of regular, plastic ones.

For those after something a little less flashy, the well-loved Portland Design Works Full Metal fenders are another popular option.

A well used set of SKS Chromoplastic mudguards embellished with a suitably ugly, custom mudflap

SKS bridges the gap with its chromoplastic mudguards , which see a thin layer of alloy sandwiched between two layers of plastic, creating a durable and sturdy set of 'guards at a relatively low price point.

Coming in nearly every size imaginable, chromoplastic mudguards are the usual go-to option for bike shops, with SKS providing a plethora of spare parts.

A set of plain plastic mudguards, such as the NCS range from Bontrager, are a lighter option, both in weight and on the wallet. However, in our experience, they won’t last as long as other alternatives.

What about mudguards and fenders for off-road bikes?

In this guide, we've focused on the best mudguards for road cycling and commuting. But what if you ride off-road?

Fear not, our guides to the best mudguards for mountain bikes and best mudguards for gravel bikes provide plenty of options and include comprehensive buying advice.

Trek 920 Review

  • Price: $2,099
  • Frame: Aluminum
  • Tires: 29″ Aluminum
  • Gears: 2 x 10

What we like about it: It features drop bars and 29er mountain bike wheels, making it versatile for various riding surfaces, and it’s an adventure travel bike that can take you anywhere.

What we didn’t like about it: It doesn’t come with mudguards as standard, so riders will need to install them themselves.

Rating: (4.8/5)

Trek 920

The Trek 920 maintains balance and capability on any surface encountered during long-distance rides. It comes with both front and rear racks, boasting remarkable carrying capacity, so all you have to do is choose a location on the map and ride there.

Next, we will analyze the riding experience, key features, components, and specifications of this bike. In the latter part of this article, we have also selected a few bikes for comparison. If you want to learn more about bike reviews, feel free to follow us.

Riding Experience

The sturdy aluminum frame of the Trek 920, combined with reliable components and impressive load-bearing capacity, makes it an ideal choice for long-distance rides. I eagerly prepared my gear and attached it to the bike before planning a route to a distant suburban area. I also booked a hotel at my destination through IHG , and then I set off. The route for this ride covered approximately 200 kilometers and included some uphill and downhill sections, as well as unpaved roads.

Uphill and Downhill

Trek 920

While riding the Trek 920 uphill, the aluminum frame proved to be robust and efficient, offering a seamless transfer of power when pedaling. The bike felt exceptionally cohesive, resulting in a swift climbing speed.

The SRAM drivetrain components, with their wide range of speeds, provided me with additional gear options when the climb became more challenging. Combined with an excellent riding posture, I was able to conserve energy. This allowed for an efficient climbing speed, making it easy to conquer every ascent.

On downhill roads, I relied on momentum and didn’t need to pedal, achieving a rapid descent. The bike’s handling allowed me to navigate bends effectively during descents. The hydraulic disc brakes provided efficient braking power, even during extended downhill sections, and I could continuously apply the brakes with confidence.

Off-Road Riding

When riding on rough terrain, the comfort level of this bike is sufficient. Despite the absence of suspension design, the Bontrager XR1, 29×2.00″ tires are more robust than typical road bike tires. With the right tire pressure, I could absorb all vibrations on bumpy roads, resulting in a stable and comfortable ride.

Furthermore, the 29-inch mountain bike wheels are rugged and durable, with the advantage of excellent terrain clearance. On small potholed sections, I could simply ignore them and roll over with enhanced stability. The adequately wide tires also reduced the risk of punctures.

In summary, this road travel bike can handle all road conditions encountered during long rides. The riding posture is comfortable, and even after riding continuously for several hours, I did not experience discomfort.

Trek 920 vs. surly ecr.

Surly ECR

The aluminum frame of the first one is lighter in weight compared to the steel frame of the second one. However, the steel frame of the latter has better shock-absorbing capabilities.

In terms of drivetrain components, both bikes use SRAM components. The first one is equipped with a 2×10-speed system, which is more suitable for long-distance road cycling, offering a wider range of speeds to choose from. On the other hand, the second one features a 1×12-speed setup, making gear shifting simpler and helping to maintain better focus during the ride.

When it comes to the braking system, the hydraulic disc brakes on the first bike provide a lighter feel in brake operation compared to the mechanical disc brakes on the second bike. Moreover, after prolonged use, hydraulic disc brakes tend to offer more reliable braking performance than mechanical disc brakes.

All in all, between these two bikes, I would prefer the Trek 920. The integrated rack design is also a feature I particularly like about this bike.

Trek 920 vs. Marin Four Corners Elite

Marin Four Corners Elite

They are both drop-bar road touring bikes. However, the first one has a lighter aluminum frame, while the second one offers a more comfortable riding experience with its steel frame.

Furthermore, the first bike comes with an integrated rack, providing better long-distance loading capacity. On the other hand, the second bike requires the rider to install a rack, which is a less user-friendly design.

In terms of drivetrain components, the first bike offers a wider range of speeds, making road cycling more effortless. The second bike features a 1×11-speed setup, which simplifies gear shifting and allows for better focus during the ride, especially during uphill cycling.

In conclusion, between these two road-touring bikes, I would prefer the Trek 920. Firstly, it has a more appealing appearance, and its superior long-distance riding capabilities are what I appreciate the most.

Trek 920 vs. Salsa Fargo Apex 1

Salsa Fargo Apex 1

In terms of geometry, the first bike offers a more aggressive riding position, resulting in higher speeds. On the other hand, the geometry of the second bike enhances its maneuverability, providing better handling.

Furthermore, the steel frame on the second bike absorbs road vibrations, improving the overall comfort of the ride. However, the first bike’s aluminum frame is lighter in weight.

Both bikes feature reliable SRAM drivetrain components, offering crisp and responsive gear changes. Regarding the braking system, the first bike’s hydraulic disc brakes outperform the mechanical disc brakes on the second bike, delivering stronger braking power. Even after extended use, the hydraulic disc brakes remain reliable.

So, between these two road-touring bikes, the Trek 920 would still be my top choice.

Trek 920 vs. Salsa Marrakesh Sora

Salsa Marrakesh Sora

Both of them come with a built-in cargo rack design, making them suitable for long-distance rides right out of the box. In terms of frame material, the first one has a lighter aluminum frame, which allows riders to conserve more energy during their journeys. The second bike, with its steel frame, excels at shock absorption, providing better comfort on bumpy roads.

Moving on to the drivetrain components, the first bike features SRAM components that offer crisp and responsive gear changes. The second bike, equipped with Shimano components, delivers smoother and more refined gear shifting. However, the components on the first bike are of a higher grade, offering better performance.

When it comes to the braking system, the hydraulic disc brakes on the first bike are more reliable than the mechanical disc brakes on the second bike. Especially after extended use, the hydraulic disc brakes continue to provide dependable performance.

So, between these two road touring bikes, I would prefer the more reliable Trek 920.

The Best Bike Fenders to Keep You (and Your Ride) Clean

Enjoy the ride—and stay grime-free—with these smart accessories.

the best mudguards to keep you and your bike clean

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

Bike fenders—also known as mudguards—are handy accessories that keep mud and spray off of you, your riding partners, and important parts of your bike, like the chain and suspension. The terminology can be a bit confusing here, but mudguards and fenders are used interchangeably in the industry.

Many group rides encourage (or require) fenders for wet-weather riding , as they prevent spray from hitting other riders in the group. Even if you’re not in group rides, bike fenders are a good way to keep water and mud from spraying your riding partner. Expect to spend between $20-$160 for a bike fender, depending on materials and size.

Free-fly adjustable fender set, what to consider, style of riding.

Your fender choice depends on your style of bike, though the ones we've covered are primarily intended for road riding or touring. Traditional bike fenders typically provide maximum wheel coverage—these are the models you want for touring bikes , commuter bikes , and road bikes . Whether or not you want a fender on your mountain bike comes down to personal preference. Fenders for mountain bikes will be shorter and accommodate for suspension and more varied riding terrain than their counterparts intended for other types of bikes.

Most bike fenders are made from either plastic or metal, with some utilizing both. Most bike fenders these days are made out of polycarbonate plastic, which is flexible, yet durable, and typically mounts more easily than metal versions. The struts aren’t as stiff as metal fenders, however, which means they can rub or jostle over bumpy terrain.

Metal fenders are stiffer than plastic and have less vibration. They tend to last longer, though they can be trickier to install and heavier than plastic.

Installation

There are a few ways to attach fenders to your bike: clip-on or bolts. A bolt-on fender/mudguard is the most durable and stable option, best for when you plan to leave the mudguard on for longer durations. Bolt-on options are a bit trickier to install, and you need to have the correct setup with fender eyelets.

Clip-on mudguards are a good alternative if you foresee taking the mudguard on and off, or if you only plan to use them for group rides. These are often lighter than bolt-on mudguards. You can also look for strap-on fenders, which attach with a hook-and-loop or zip-tie style closure to your bike’s seat tube, fork, or seatpost.

How We Selected

Though they might not seem like the most thrilling accessory, bike fenders/mudguards come in a variety of styles and sizes, as well as having different installment methods and intended uses. We chose top performers for mountain bikers, road cyclists, and people who want traditional mounting styles versus clip-on ones. These fenders come at range of price points, so there’s something for everyone, no matter what style of riding you’re doing throughout the rainy season.

  • Best For: Road, gravel, and commuter bikes
  • Material: Plastic
  • Dimensions: 31 x 2.5 x 1 inches
  • Colors: Black

This easy-to-install fender set is built almost entirely from recycled beverage bottles. At 2.5 inches wide at the tail, these mudguards are just big enough to keep you dry without feeling clunky, and while they aren’t for super rugged or technical riding, they make a terrific commuter set or rainy-season accessory to keep stashed in your garage.

This set fits 26-inch, 700c, and 29-inch tires up to 2.25 inches wide. Some might have issues attaching the fenders with the included hardware, but this set provides good quality at a great price, so a quick trip to the hardware store shouldn’t be an issue.

  • Best For: Road and commuter bikes
  • Material: Anodized aluminum, plastic
  • Dimensions: 29 x 18 x 2.5 inches

This sleek set of fenders is built with durable anodized aluminum, and they work perfectly with 650b wheels and wider tires. These fenders can be mounted easily to any bike with a fender eyelet, and they utilize fully stainless steel attachment hardware.

The full-coverage set includes flexible polypropylene (plastic) mud flaps for added protection against mud and water, and they have double rear stays that don’t rattle or brush against any parts of your bike. This set fits up to 650b x 56mm (27.5 x 2.2–inch) tires, and as a bonus, they have unique laser graphics that set them apart from other fenders. These are heavier than other models, though, weighing in at 465 grams for the pair.

  • Best For: Road bikes
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Dimensions: ‎7.9 x 2 x 2 inches
  • Colors: Silver, black

The SKS Raceblade mudguards have a quick attachment system that uses secure clips instead of eyelets, making them incredibly versatile, though they cannot be mounted with bolts. The clip design on this set feels more secure than other clip-on fenders, and you can customize these to fit the wheel radius by simply adjusting the length of the stays.

The clips make these easy to remove for when the roads dry out, and the long mud flaps help protect from the most stubborn road spray.

  • Best For: Fat bikes
  • Dimensions: 22.5 x 6.5 x 4 inches
  • Colors: Black, camo

This wide design is perfect for fat bikes in all sorts of inclement weather and conditions. The 22.5-inch length and 6.5-inch width provides ample protection against sloppy slush, mud, and other non-ideal conditions. This fender has a quick-release bracket that allows for fast installation and removal without sacrificing stability, and the plastic material is strong and flexible while still being lightweight.

The installation bracket also allows you to adjust the height and location of the fender to best protect you based on bike geometry.

  • Best For: Gravel and cyclocross bikes
  • Material: Plastic and glass composite
  • Dimensions: Front length : 19.7- plus 8-inch add-on; rear length: 37 inches

This set is ideal for gravel, cyclocross, and other burly racing bikes with wider tires. They can fit up to 42mm tires, with some variability in sizing up depending on style of wheel/tire. They’re highly adjustable to fit a wide range of bike builds and are made of a unique plastic and glass particle composite.

These are quick to attach and remove, and the telescoping stays allow for custom alignment. There are some compatibility issues with certain forks, so be sure to know the size and dimensions of your bike before purchasing.

  • Best For: Mountain bikes
  • Dimensions: 10.6 x 9.1 inches
  • Colors: Black + graphic options

A front fender is a great option for sloppy early-season rides or commutes to the trail on wet roads. This smart piece of gear is often called a “marsh guard” and helps prevent mud from getting in your bike’s front suspension. This is a small (10-inch) guard specifically designed to protect your front fork stanchions, and just takes a few zip-ties to install for easy attaching and removing.

We wish this came with the zip-ties, but a few hook-and-loop straps or similar ties will do the trick. This fender is sturdy, and with the right attachments, won’t slide or get jostled on bumpy rides.

  • Material: Plastic, fiberglass, stainless steel
  • Dimensions: 33 inches long

Mountain bike mudguards are more intended to protect your bike’s suspension and chain than you. After all, if you're riding a mountain bike, you're out there to get dirty. But this smartly designed rear fender protects elements of your bike without getting in the way, and fits bikes with 27.5-inch, 650b, or 29er wheels with tires up to 3 inches wide.

It comes with a rear extender that can be used as additional protection for the derailleur, and has a fast hook-and-loop attachment style for mounting, with no need for fender eyelets. This is highly adjustable and offers solid protection at just 6.1 ounces.

  • Best For: Mountain bike
  • Material : Plastic
  • Dimensions : 11 inches long, with several other options
  • Colors : Wild sparkly patterns in green, teal, black, red, blue

This stylish fender attaches with quick hook-and-loop closures, which makes it easy to adjust and remove/install. This fender’s dimensions work best for mountain bikes, but you can use this with gravel bikes as well. We like the additional wing protection to help keep the mud and dirt not just off your face, but the grit out of your fork seals and stanchions, too.

  • Best For: Casual commuter bikes
  • Dimensions: 20x3 inches (rear), 12.6x3 inches(front)
  • Colors: Solid black; black with blue, green, orange, red, gray, or white accents

This simple set of fenders comes with a rear and a front fender for full protection during muddy town rides and commutes, helping you avoid the dreaded rooster-tail when you show up to work. This works with stem diameters of 34mm or less, attaching easily to the stems to sit with plenty of clearance above the bike tires.

These provide ample protection for the front and back tire, with the front fender measuring just over 12 inches long, and the rear fender measuring 20 inches long. As with many budget offerings, the materials on these aren’t as durable or high-tech as some others on this list, so the plastic is more brittle and they won’t last forever.

Road Bike Sizing Guide

Road bikes as the name implies are for road use. There are a growing number of “gravel” or “adventure” bikes which are based on road bicycles, but feature wider and more versatile tyres and disc brakes, so you can also do light trail riding such as towpaths. They are also more pothole resistant!

Sizing is normally in cm, and is a measurement from the centre of the chain-wheel axle (The BB or bottom bracket) and the top of the frame seat tube. Some are measured to the centre of the seat tube where it meets the top tube (otherwise known as the crossbar).

That measurement is on road bikes normally in CM – and no-one really knows why! Some road bikes will use “T-Shirt Sizing” so S, M, L, XL etc. but there will be a geometry chart that then shows the measurement in CM.

If you need any more advice on bike sizing for road bikes please contact us and we can help you make the right choice.

Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Nikitniki, Moscow

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Architecture , Cities , Religion

The Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Nikitniki (the Church of the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God on Varvarka) is a great example of the Russian (Muscovite) uzorochye of the middle of the 17th century.

It was built by Yaroslavl merchants in Kitay-Gorod, a cultural and historical area within the central part of Moscow , in 1628-1651. In Soviet times, this part of the city was built up with administrative buildings, but the church was preserved and used as a museum. The Russian (Muscovite) uzorochye is an architectural style formed in the 17th century. It is characterized by intricate forms, an abundance of decor, complexity of composition, and picturesque silhouettes.

This building is a milestone in the history of Russian architecture; it served as a model for many Moscow churches of the second half of the 17th century.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

trek 920 mudguards

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

trek 920 mudguards

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

trek 920 mudguards

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

trek 920 mudguards

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

trek 920 mudguards

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

trek 920 mudguards

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

trek 920 mudguards

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

trek 920 mudguards

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

trek 920 mudguards

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

trek 920 mudguards

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

trek 920 mudguards

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

trek 920 mudguards

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

trek 920 mudguards

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

trek 920 mudguards

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
