The Sound of Music in Salzburg

The enormous success of  The Sound of Music  Broadway Musical by  Rodgers & Hammerstein  premiering in 1959 made film director Robert Wise and 250 crew members turn  Salzburg  and its surroundings into the  Sound of Music filming location  in 1964. And it was  Salzburg Panorama Tours  who took the  Sound of Music  film crew to the  various locations  where the  famous movie  was filmed.

Shortly after its release, the film became a tremendous success, receiving five Academy Awards, becoming the highest grossing movie ever and reaching cult status over the years. Both musical and film are based on the "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" written by  Maria von Trapp  in 1949.

Get to know Salzburg

Follow the traces of the  Trapp family  and take a tour through Salzburg and its surroundings. See the  original film settings  and just imagine being  Julie Andrews , the main character in the film, playing  Maria von Trapp . Learn about the historical and architectural landmarks of Salzburg as well as the Lake District while enjoying the highlights of the movie. Relax and listen to the  Original Sound of Music  soundtrack and of course feel free to sing-along  Edelweiss  and many more... Our live guide will tell you everything you need to know about The Sound of Music, the Trapp Familiy, the film locations and about the shooting.

FAQs Original Sound of Music Tour®

Where does sound of music take place.

The true story, that The Sound of Music is based, on took place in the Austrian city of Salzburg. Large parts of the movie were filmed in and around Salzburg, some scenes even in the original locations. Featured in the  Original Sound of Music Tour® are among many others Leopoldskron Palace and the gazebo at Hellbrunn Palace .

When did the true story of Sound of Music take place?

Maria was asked to teach Georg von Trapp's children in 1926 and their wedding took place in 1927. In 1938, the Trapp family moved to the US to escape the Nazi regime in Germany and Austria. Their move was however far less dramatic than it is portrayed in the film. The 1965 film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical and based on Maria von Trapps 1949 memoir "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers".

Where is the Sound of Music house?

There are three locations associated closely with the Trapp family in Salzburg. The original Trapp family home Villa Trapp is located in Aigen to the southeast of Salzburg and not seen in the movie. Two other estates were used to portray the Trapps' home in the movie: Leopoldskron Palace and Frohnburg Palace .

Where is the Sound of Music gazebo?

The gazebo featured in the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" scene was located in the gardens of Leopoldskron Palace during filming. It was later moved to the gardens at Hellbrunn Palace to make it accessible to interested visitor. The Original Sound of Music Tour® stops at the gazebo to give you the opportunity for unforgettable moments and souvenir photos.

Which church was used in Sound of Music?

While many other scenes were filmed in the city of Salzburg, the romantic wedding scene in the movie The Sound of Music was shot at the church in Mondsee. A stop at this church is part of the Original Sound of Music Tour® by Salzburg Panorama Tours  and gives you the opportunity to explore this beautiful filming location.

When is the Original Sound of Music Tour® operated?

This tour is operated daily with two start times at 9.15 am and 2.00 pm.

Sound of Music

The Sound of Music

The original tour.

Let us start with the beginning of this really extraordinary story. In 1963 Twentieth Century Fox sent scouts to  Salzburg  to plan filming the the Von Trapp Family story on location. The filming in  Salzburg  started in 1964. As flights and housing for over 250 crew members, technicians, camera men, stage hands as well as the actors were extremely expensive, the time-frame was limited to six weeks, but due to bad weather conditions, the  filming  took around 11 weeks after all. During this time nobody dreamt that THIS  special movie  would one day become one of the  most famous and successful films  ever. After the premiere in 1965, the first fans from the US started coming to  Salzburg , to visit the  locations where the movie had been shot . As the  Panorama Tours  drivers had been involved in escorting the actors as well as the staff to the  various places , they not only know the exact locations, but also lots of stories behind the making of this movie. At this time our sightseeing tour  ORIGINAL SOUND OF MUSIC TOUR  was born so we could share all this with you! With us you can get all the inside information! Our company,  Salzburg Panorama Tours , is also really proud of the special friendship with the Trapp Family in Vermont and also with  Rodgers & Hammerstein . Our  tour  is the officially presented tour on the official DVD and Blu-ray as well as on many other productions like "On Location" with Charmian Carr which was filmed in 2004, on occasion of the 40th anniversary of the  movie .

🎵 The 5 Best Sound of Music Tours in Salzburg [2024 Reviews]

Located right on the border of Germany, the Austrian city of Salzburg is known for its stunning architecture, breathtaking views of the Eastern Alps, and for being the birthplace of Mozart.

However, did you know that it’s also where the legendary film “The Sound of Music” was also filmed? Before taking the first SoM tour here, I funny enough hadn’t even seen the film and still had an amazing time visiting these absolutely gorgeous places.

After that, I immediately saw the movie so I could appreciate it even further, and have come up with a carefully selected list of the 5 top Sound of Music Tours available today! Let’s jump right in!

Best Sound of Music Tours from Salzburg

Quick answer: the 5 best rated sound of music tours for 2024.

  • Original Sound of Music Private Tour Salzburg
  • The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg
  • Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour
  • The Hills Are Alive
  • Sound of Music Tour by Minivan

Best Salzburg Sound of Music Tour Reviews

1. original sound of music private tour salzburg.

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure: Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1, 5020 Salzburg
  • Departure Time: 9:45 AM
  • Includes:  Driver/guide, Transport by private air-conditioned Mercedes E 220 or VW luxury minibus, 1-hour Edelweiss apple strudel cooking class and tastings (if option selected)

For me, a well-rated tour should always come with interesting commentary and a structured schedule to ensure seamless transitions between sights.

The Original Sound of Music Private Tour Salzburg offers all that and so much more, with some flexibility to check out a couple of extra attractions if you’d like. I didn’t know what to expect, but our guide truly brought the scene to life with plenty of passion, knowledge, and personality!

I love that this is a private tour with a small group setting, which made it feel more like we had a good friend taking us around to all the different sights!

We rode around in an air-conditioned Mercedes E220 which was very comfortable with big windows so I could soak in the beautiful landscapes as we cruised along.

Our guide was a very safe driver, and offered some interesting historical accounts as well as stories relating back to the movie that I’d never heard of before.

Our first stop was the Schloss Hellbrunn which was constructed in the 17th century and is known famously for being the site of the garden gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’.

Expand To See More See Less

After that, we took another gorgeous drive through Salzkammergut where I got some amazing videos of the towering Alps and glass-like lakes which you see in the first scenes of The Sound of Music, passing the little village of St. Gilgen.

Even though a relatively good amount of time during our tour was spent driving, it was still kind of tiring and I welcomed a 50-minute break at Basilika St. Michael.

Here, we had free time to explore at our leisure and we chose to take a little stroll around the picture-perfect Mondsee. I highly recommend grabbing a cup of coffee and their famous apple strudel!

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure:  Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1, 5020 Salzburg
  • Departure Time: 9:15 AM, 2:15 PM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, tour

This is yet another 4-hour SoM experience – one that I found to be one of the most affordable, “best bang for your buck” tours.

The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg  comes in 2 options: both a large bus tour and a small group/minibus tour which is more exclusive (and more expensive). I did the big bus tour as I do find it a fantastically affordable option, so I’ll be speaking to my experience on that.

Another great aspect of this tour is that there are so many different start times to choose from, that you’re bound to find one that works perfectly around your itinerary.

I was a bit hesitant, wondering how it would be to be on a tour with so many people, but it almost made it more fun! I’ll get into the details in a moment, but I want to mention that there are no hotel pickups involved so you’ll have to make your way to the central meeting point first.

From Mirabellplatz in the center of the city, you’ll board the bus and head through the gorgeous scenery with the film’s soundtrack playing to really set the tone.

Me and the rest of our big group sang along happily to ‘Edelweiss’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, and ‘My Favorite Things’ which instantly bonded us and made the whole experience feel surreal!

The Mirabell Palace and Gardens is where ‘Do-Re-Mi’ was filmed, and we got the chance to take plenty of photos in front of the Pegasus Fountain and steps!

After this, we made our way through the stunning views of the Alps and made another stop at Lake Leopoldskron which is like a mirror, reflecting the incredible castle by the same name (where the boating scene was taken).

We got to take more photos at the gardens of Hellbrunn castle, the glass gazebo for the kissing scene, and even Nonnberg Abbey.

Throughout the entire tour, our guides did a fantastic job telling us about the different landmarks and relating them back to the movie, complete with insider info!

3. Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Rudolfskai 38, 5020 Salzburg
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM

This is one of the most magical small-group tours I’ve been in, with the opportunity to explore more of Hallstatt than what the other tours offer.

The Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour  is a significantly longer tour than the previous couple, so if you’re looking for a full-day experience, this is a fantastic choice. Starting off early in the morning, it’s also a great way to get acquainted with the area if it’s your first time here.

I’m not sure if this is always the case, but I noticed that my tour and many others’ consisted of no more than 5 people, which was simply amazing.

We had a very personalized tour with our guide, who ended up feeling more like a friend who was incredibly knowledgeable about the subject rather than just a guide.

Our day started out with being picked up from our hotel by a comfortable vehicle, doing a short city tour of Salzburger Altstadt which is full of breathtaking architecture.

After taking plenty of photos and videos of the city, we then set out for Leopoldskroner Weiher, where we got to see the rear of the “von Trapp” house and the ponds the kids fell into in the film.

Throughout the sightseeing, our guide related it back to the different movie scenes along with plenty of behind-the-scenes info that I wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else.

We then stopped over at the intimidating Schloss Hellbrun, where we also got to take some photos in front of the “16-going-on-17” gazebo.

Lake Wolfgang was something from a postcard, and we got to take plenty of photos there before exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt on our own.

However, our guide was great at offering plenty of recommendations and I’d love to go back and spend a couple of days there. After that, we passed by St. Gilgen Mozartplatz and Basilika St. Michael to reenact the wedding scene from the film!

4. The Hills Are Alive

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Private tour, professional guide

This is my other favorite all-day tour of its kind, which I also found to be one of the best for seeing some of the best views of the Austrian Alps.

The Hills Are Alive Tour is indeed aptly named, taking you through nearly every iconic scene of The Sound of Music.

If that sounds like fun to you, make sure to lace up a pair of comfortable walking shoes and put on a jacket because it’s a day full of venturing through one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

This tour also includes a convenient hotel pickup right from the lobby, so there’s no need to worry about finding a meetup point or booking additional transportation.

I do recommend dressing comfortable, though, as you’ll definitely do a bit of walking around in nature. The transportation was very comfortable, with padded seating, plenty of legroom, and big windows to view the Austrian landscape.

The first stop of the day was at Mirabell Gardens, which I immediately recognized as the place where the “Do-Re-Mi” scenes took place!

We got plenty of time to stroll throughout the lush area, complete with the Pegasus Fountain and Dwarf Garden, which was really cool to see as I love Roman and Greek art.

We then took the elevator up to an incredible viewpoint, which is known for being one of the most impressive in all of Salzburg (we even saw a 1,000-year-old fortress!).

We then headed back down to the historical center, where we saw the Horse Bath, Festival DIstrict, St. Peter’s Church, and much more.

Leopoldskron Palace and Hellbrunn Palace were equally as impressive, before exploring the majestic Bavarian Alps, which you’ll recognize from the film’s opening scenes.

We then made our way to the top of the infamous Sound of Music trail followed by a delicious lunch consisting of traditional local fare before heading to the Lake District.

5.  Sound of MusicTour by Minivan

Last but certainly not least, is the 4-hour Sound of Music Tour by Minivan . This is the second-best option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly tour, though it is actually affordable while still being a small-group tour!

With a maximum of just 8 participants, you can rest assured that you’ll receive a personalized experience rather than just a cookie-cutter activity that you can find anywhere.

You can choose whether to meet in the center of the city or take advantage of their free hotel pickup service in-between the hours of 8:30 and 9:00 am.

The vehicle is quite comfortable, and with the big windows and amazing views of the Alps surrounding us, there was never a moment of boredom.

The first stop is Leopoldskroner Weiher, as is the case with most of the tours, where you’ll see the back of the von Trapp house and the pond.  After that, we saw the Hellbrunn Castle, which, in itself is quite impressive.

Here, we saw the 16-going-on-17 gazebo and had the chance to take some photos before checking out the glass-like Lake Wolfgang.

We followed it up with a trip to Basilika St. Michael, where we had a blast reenacting the wedding scene from the movie!

I felt like our guide did a fantastic job explaining everything to us both in the van and outside at each location, answering any questions we had.

The PA system inside the van was a great addition, ensuring all of us could clearly hear what the guide was saying as we passed different sights in real time.

Overall, it was a great time, with a top-notch guide, great organization and recommendations, and at this price, is really hard to beat.

The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Austria: FULL List + Map!

The Sound of Music (1965)

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer here .

The hills are alive with  The Sound of Music  filming locations, all 20+ of them! And if you’re planning a trip to Salzburg in Austria or are just enjoying a rewatch of the classic movie musical, you’re probably in love with the setting and want to know where The Sound of Music  was filmed.

The Sound of Music  (1965) is a Hollywoodised tale of a true story. Flighty Maria (Julie Andrews) is a nun-in-training who leaves monastic life to become the governess to the seven unruly children of a widowed Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). She teaches the children and their stern father about love and music, but the Nazis’ control of Austria thwarts their new-found bliss.

The 20th Century Fox Studios in Hollywood was the main setting for The Sound of Music interior scenes. But you’ll be pleased to know that the majority of The Sound of Music locations take place in Salzburg, Austria where the movie is set.

I visited Austria in September 2022. This guide includes every single location of  The Sound of Music . I’ve even created a  The Sound of Music  locations map so you can find them for yourself. There are lots of tours of  The Sound of Music  locations   too.

So, where does  The Sound of Music  take place? Don your lederhosen and let’s find out!

Where Was The Sound of Music Filmed?

The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Austria and Germany

1. salzkammergut lakes region.

The opening The Sound of Music  locations are establishing shots of the Austrian countryside. We’re treated to incredible, sweeping panoramic shots of lakes in the Salzkammergut  lakes region.

It’s possible that some of the first locations are some of the larger lakes like Attersee or Traunsee .

Salzkammergut Lakes Region in Austria

2. St Gilgen

One of the first definite  The Sound of Music  film locations is  St Gilgen , a small town   next to  Wolfgangsee . You can clearly see the Pfarrkirche Heiliger Ägidius church in this small but beautiful lakeside town.

St Gilgen in Austria

3. Kloster Höglwörth

The next birds-eye-view location of The Sound of Music is Kloster Höglwörth  on the banks of Höglwörther See . This 12th-century former monastery has a distinctive tower with a double-domed roof so it’s easy to spot.

Although it’s close to  Salzburg , this monastery is technically in Germany !

Kloster Höglwörth in Germany

4. Schloss Anif

Did you notice the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it The Sound of Music location in the middle of the small lake? That’s  Schloss Anif  and the lake is Schlossallee . This is a remote castle just south of Salzburg .

Schloss Anif in Austria

5. Marktschellenberg

With the establishing shots over, the hills are officially alive with the sound of music!

The Sound of Music  hills location is just outside the village of  Marktschellenberg  in  Germany behind the street address Mehlweg 5 . I’ve pinned the exact location on the Google Map at the start of this post.

Although The Sound of Music  film location in question looks very remote, there are some houses just out of shot and this land is private property. The beech trees and babbling brook were also added by the production team. Sorry to crush your dreams of ever twirling like Maria in this spot!

6. Stift Nonnberg

After a montage of churches, we see the abbey in Salzburg where Maria lives which is Stift Nonnberg . This is where the real Maria lived too!

Although the exterior location of  The Sound of Music  is the abbey, the interiors were all shot back at the 20th Century Fox Studios . The replica of the courtyard at  Stift Nonnberg  is  so  faithful that most people can’t believe it wasn’t shot there.

You can visit this monastery on a walking tour of The Sound of Music  filming locations .

Stift Nonnberg is one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

7. Humboldt Terrace

Mother Abbess sends Maria away to be a governess to decide if monastic life is definitely for her. Maria leaves the convent then walks down a path along the hillside and balances her guitar on the ledge singing  I Have Confidence.

The Sound of Music filming location is  Humbolt Terrace which is a scenic walking trail along the Mönchsberg cliffs. You can see the 11th-century Fortress Hohensalzburg  looming on a hill and Salzburg Cathedral  clearly in the background.

Later in the film when Maria and the children are singing Do-Re-Mi , they walk along this same path but closer to Museum der Moderne . I think it also appears a fourth time when the children are attempting to coax Maria back from the convent.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to climb to see these The Sound of Music  locations in Salzburg! You can use the Mönchsberg Elevator .

Landscape of Fortress Hohensalzburg in Salzburg, Austria

8. Residenzplatz

If you were still wondering, “Where is The Sound of Music  set?” then this next location will leave you in no doubt! As Maria continues singing, she walks in front of Salzburg Cathedral in Domplatz and under the arches towards Residenplatz .

She even splashes water in the Residenzbrunnen water fountain.

Residenzplatz one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

9. Kapitelschwemme

Maria catches her bus to the Von Trapp house from Kapitelschwemme . This is one of The Sound of Music  Salzburg locations that doesn’t make logistical sense because the bus is supposedly parked right next to the cathedral!

However, it’s accurate because can clearly see Fortress Hohensalzburg  in the background. You’ll learn all the behind-the-scenes movie magic of  The Sound of Music on the original locations tour which you can book here .

10. Hellbrunner Allee

Director Robert Wise shot the next The Sound of Music  in Salzburg location on Hellbrunner Allee . This is where Maria gets off the bus.

It’s now a popular cycling path but the trees lining the path she walks along and the yellow wall are still there (and still yellow).

11. Schloss Frohnburg

She pauses outside of the gates of the Von Trapp estate to stare at the daunting Von Trapp mansion. These are the gates to Schloss Frohnburg , at  Hellbrunner Allee 53 . Today, the 17th-century castle is a music school.

It will appear a few times throughout the film as the front entrance to the house. For example, during the ball scene when cars are arriving and when the Nazis hang their flag.

It is worth pointing out that the interiors of the house from The Sound of Music  were all studio sets. But Schloss Frohnburg  isn’t the only The Sound of Music  setting that stands in for the von Trapp estate…

Schloss Fronberg one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

12. Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron

So, mainly where did The Sound of Music take place? The prime location for the house in The Sound of Music  is  Schloss Leopoldskron . It’s now a hotel, but if you’re not a guest you can still view the estate through the fence from König Ludwig Strasse .

You can see the beautiful Leopoldskroner Weiher lake from this viewpoint too, where Maria and the children’s canoe will capsize later.

Many scenes were filmed on the terrace here. For example, when Baroness Schraeder arrives and has a cigarette with Uncle Max. The gazebo/pavilion featured in Liesl and Rolf’s song was  on the grounds, but too many people were trespassing so the council moved it elsewhere.

But want to know where  The Sound of Music  house was in real life?  Villa Trapp  is next to the train station in the Salzburg suburb of Aigen . It was a guesthouse but now it appears to be a care home.

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

13. The Sound of Music Gazebo/Pavilion

Although this is the original pavilion, it isn’t in its original The Sound of Music  Salzburg location. You’ll find the glass gazebo that Liesal and Rolf dance in at Schloss Hellbrunn .

While watching the film, you might notice that the gazebo looks larger on the inside than it does on the outside. 20th Century Fox built a replica which is where they filmed the dance scenes.

The Sound of Music  pavilion will also appear later in the movie when Captain von Trapp and Maria finally admit their feelings for one another.

14. Mozartsteg

During the storm, Maria is able to get the children to warm up to her. She sews play clothes for them out of her curtains and they explore the city together.

You can see them crossing the  Mozartsteg bridge together in the direction of the new town carrying wicker picnic baskets.

Mozartsteg in Salzburg, Austria

15. Domplatz and Salzburg Cathedral

You might have even visited some of these Salzburg  The Sound of Music  locations in the past without being aware! Because next, the gang walks through Domplatz which is right in front of Salzburg Cathedral .

Salzburg Cathedral in Domplatz one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

16. Herbert von Karajan Platz

Continuing the tour of  The Sound of Music  locations in Salzburg city centre, the von Trapp kids and Maria walk through Herbert von Karajan Platz . You can see the beautiful horse murals in the background and they are still there today.

Herbert von Karajan Platz in Salzburg, Austria

17. Kajetanerplatz

Maria takes the kids to buy fruit and vegetables where she attempts to juggle two tomatoes. The next The Sound of Music  shooting location is in Kajetanerplatz . Salzburg still hosts a ‘Biomarkt’ here from 8:00 until 13:00 on Fridays.

Read next: Before Sunrise Filming Locations in Vienna

Unfortunately, I’m not sure of The Sound of Music Austria locations where Maria and the kids run on the path along the river or where they take the train in the foggy mountains.

I do, however, know that the gang eats their picnic, plays catch, and starts singing Do-Re-Mi  in the Austrian town of  Werfen  which is south of Salzburg .

Why? Because there is an official trail called ‘ The Sound of Music Trail Werfen ‘ that you can follow! I’ve pinned it on the Google Map at the start of this post.

Werfen in Austria

19. St Erhard Church

Maria and the von Trapps take a carriage ride passed the St Erhard Church . They continue down the street in the direction of 14 Nonntaler Hauptstraße .

St Erhard Church in Salzburg, Austria

20. Mirabellgarten

Still singing  Do-Re-Me , Maria and the kids leap around Mirabellgarten . Mirabell Palace’s formal gardens are one of the most iconic  The Sound of Music  shooting locations because they’re a popular tourist attraction in their own right!

Here are all of the places in Mirabellgarten  featured in The Sound of Music :

  • Pegasus Fountain  – Maria and the kids dance around the fountain when they first arrive
  • Mirabellgarten Vine Tunnel  – This tunnel is still there today
  • Dual Male Statues Draped in Cloth  – These statues are by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre
  • Vier-Elemente-Brunnen Fountain  – Maria and the kids dance around this fountain next
  • Zwergerlgarten – This garden has funny sculptures and they dance in front of the one with round glasses carrying a hat in his left hand

Before they leave Mirabellgarten, they hop on the steps just north of the  Pegasus Fountain  on  Bernhard Paumgartner Weg . I’ve pinned all of these exact locations on the Google Map at the start of this post and the gardens are free to enter.

Visit Mirabellgarten on a small group tour of  The Sound of Music  locations!

Mirabellgarten one of The Sound of Music Filming Locations in Salzburg, Austria

21. Basilika St Michael

A  lot  happens inside the von Trapp home after Maria and the kids dance in Salzburg’s historic centre! So, there aren’t any new  The Sound of Music  filming locations until Maria and Captain von Trapp get married.

It’s suggested that they get married at the Abbey, but they actually get married in the much more grand Basilika St. Michael in Mondsee , east of  Salzburg .

Basilika St Michael in Mondsee, Austria

22. Felsenreitschule Theatre

After the Nazis roll in, the children rehearse for the Salzburg Music Festival in Felsenreitschule Theatre . It’s a former 17th-century riding school-turned theatre built into the side of Salzburg cliff’s rockface.

And it actually is a live music venue in the Salzburg Music Festival! The theatre also makes for a dramatic location when the von Trapps sneak out after performing and before they accept the first prize.

23. St. Peter Friedhof

The von Trapps need somewhere to hide out before they can cross the border into Switzerland. Seeking refuge with the nuns, the family hides in Nonnberg Graveyard.

This isn’t one of the real  The Sound of Music  filming locations, but the studio set of the cemetery was inspired by St. Peter Friedhof in Salzburg . Mozart’s sister Nannerl and the real-life Max Detweiler are buried here.

St Peter's Friedhof in Salzburg, Austria

24. Mount Untersberg

The von Trapps finally escape and hike over the border from Austria into neutral Switzerland where they are safe from the Nazis. Yay! They hike in the Berchtesgaden region with  Mount Untersberg  in the background.

It’s quite funny because not only is the real location in Germany (i.e. not where you want to go when escaping the Nazis!) but it’s also super close to Eagle’s Nest .

Most people agree that the best place to see this view is from the  Rossfeld Panorama Strasse .

Mount Untersberg in Germany

Check out The Sound of Music Tours in Salzburg!

Where does  The Sound of Music  take place? Mostly in the Austrian city of  Salzburg , but there are lots of amazing filming locations that are far out of the city centre.

And I think you’ll agree that there are an overwhelming number of filming locations to visit, too!

I’d recommend booking a tour of The Sound of Music filming locations when you’re in Salzburg so you can maximise your time. You’ll also get behind-the-scenes insights from a knowledgeable, local guide and meet fellow movie fans on your tour.

Get Your Guide, in my opinion, is the best place to book tours. They have super detailed descriptions, authentic reviews, and a blanket flexible cancellation policy. Check out the original The Sound of Music  Tour Austria as it is, by far, the best tour in Salzburg. It lasts for four hours and you’ll have an absolutely fabulous time.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

Austria travel blog, sound of music trail: sing-a-long hike to the prettiest meadow in austria, how to get there and what to expect.

Hiking along The Sound of Music trail to the meadow where Maria and the children had a picnic and sang Do-Re-Mi is a must in Austria not only for fans of the movie. The short hike from the Werfen village centre is full of surprises and rewards in the form of movie paraphernalia and magnificent Alpine views. This post covers everything you need to know for a successful hike.

Sound of Music Trail Austria

Our hike to The Sound of Music meadow in Werfen ended an enjoyable anniversary weekend of exploring the filming locations of The Sound of Music in Salzburg .

Sound of Music Trail Basics

3 reasons to visit the sound of music meadow.

  • You won’t easily find a more beautiful spot than the Sound of Music Meadow for a picnic in the Austrian Alps. The view of the Hohenwerfen Castle in the distance and the mountains rising up behind it is one-in-a-million.
  • For an unforgettable day trip from Salzburg , you can visit the Werfen Ice Caves and the Hohenwerfen Castle before or after hiking the Sound of Music Trail.
  • You can live out your Sound of Music fantasy of frolicking in the mountains like Maria, singing The Hills Are Alive for only the cows in the meadow to hear.

Linda from Travel Tyrol.

Sound of Music Trail Description

The trail starts in front of the Werfen tourist information office in the Marktstraße. If it’s open, you can go in to ask for directions. Otherwise, take a brochure outside.

In Austria, the Sound of Music meadow is called the Gschwandtanger . It refers to this grazing plateau with its clear views of the Pongau district and the Salzach Valley.

Directions to Get on Your Way

With the tourism office on your left, continue down the street for a short distance until you get to a wide passage between two school buildings (Volksschule and Mittelschule). There is a visible trail sign on a wall in front of you.

Go left between the schools (opposite the museum) and up the monastery staircase directly in front of you. Turn right into Klostergasse when you reach the top.

This is the only part where we weren’t sure if we were on the right track after not seeing a sign for a while. But I stopped to ask a local walking her dog.

She told us to continue in Klostergasse, cross Struberstraße on the left and then go up the hill into Wolfengasse. You can’t miss the wooden walkthrough with the official trail sign.

Sound of Music trail start in Werfen Austria.

From here, it’s almost impossible to get lost. There are more than enough route markers along the way. The trail gets steeper at times, but there’s always enough opportunity to rest while taking in the views, playing a music chime , or solving a Sound of Music puzzle.

If you reach a gate , you know you are near the world-famous Sound of Music meadow. Continue through it until you get to a road. The entrance to the meadow picnic area is a five-minute walk up the road.

What to Expect on the Sound of Music Meadow

The original filming location of the Sound of Music picnic where Maria starts teaching the Von Trapp children Do-Re-Mi is now a rustic picnic area enclosed by a wooden fence.

Standing in the Sound of Music meadow while taking in the spectacular scenery with the Hohenwerfen Castle and the Tennen Mountains in the background, it’s easy to imagine why this is perhaps the most famous of the movie’s filming locations.

Hohenwerfen Castle from a hill.

The Hohenwerfen Castle also features in the 1968 film Where Eagles Dare starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.

Have fun taking pictures by positioning yourself running next to Maria and the kids. There’s a picture of them on a round window through which to take the photo.

You can also look through peepholes for epic views of the surrounding landscape. On our visit, live entertainment was provided by grazing cows and inquisitive horses who came to say hello.

For your picnic, there is a table and benches with some additional wooden seating. There are NO TOILETS, so don’t drink too much!

Tips for Your Hike

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The Sound of Music trail is well looked after and no hiking boots are needed, but it’s still a nature trail.
  • There’s a supermarket near the Werfen tourist office where you can buy drinks or snacks to enjoy on the Sound of Music meadow.
  • If you want to picnic in style, order a picnic basket from the Werfen tourist office to take along on your hike. It includes food from the region and a picnic blanket and hiking poles to borrow.
  • If you’re really pressed for time or unable to walk the entire Sound of Music trail, it’s possible to drive there. We saw two groups of people arrive by car or taxi. However, I won’t recommend it as it takes away most of the fun of hiking to the meadow.
  • Schedule enough time to enjoy the hike and trail features and sights without having to rush. If you’re starting out in the afternoon, make sure you’ll get back to town before dark. In winter, it can be dark by 17:00 while it stays light until 22:00 on some summer nights.

Loved listening to the music on the bus and seeing film locations we otherwise wouldn't have seen outside of the city without a car, as well as learning some history about Salzburg too. Really enjoyed the stop in Mondsee where the wedding was filmed and the opportunity to get some delicious strudel in a local cafe. Would highly recommend!! Read more Written April 24, 2024

  • Mytakeonthings 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles One of my 'favourite things' about Salzburg My daughter and I took the 4 hour trip on our first full day in Salzburg. Glad we went then as we revisited some of the spots afterwards. It was a well organised, well paced tour , full of lots of information we didn't know about the making of the film. The bus took us out of the city to see some of the coutryside associated with the movie - that was great to see as we'd have most likely not gone as far on our own. We also visited Mondsee to see the church that Maria and the Captain got married in - a beautiful town with a fab coffee shop, a perfect stop off point. David was a fun, welcoming and very informative tour guide , who had us all singing to the soundtrack of the film - that was good fun!! All in all I would highly recommend this trip, a must do early on in your trip to Salzburg 🏔️ Read more Written April 17, 2024

The views were absolutely breathtaking and the village of Hallstatt is quaint and gorgeous. Big shout out to the lovely Leopold who was our tour guide. I was lucky enough to travel in his mini van rather than the big coach - purely out of chance! Leopold was informative, knowledgable and hilarious. Buzzcocks in 1977: (from left) Steve Diggle, John Maher, Pete Shelley, Steve Garvey.

A musical tour of Manchester: from the Hallé to the Happy Mondays

Every genre of music has made its mark on Manchester, including dialect ballads, classical, TV theme tunes and all the strands of post-punk. Welcome to the north-west sound

M yth distorts any city’s musical history, and in Manchester myth looms as large as the new Co-op Live , a £365m, 23,500-capacity mega-venue that opens today and will soon be staging big-name acts, including Take That. So, for every occasion a music fan mentions the hit-making boy band or, for that matter, 10cc or the Hollies, a thousand more bark back: Joy Division, the Fall, Happy Mondays. Not that 10cc were a small Manc band, but they peaked before punk and a wall went up at the end of the 1970s that relegated all that had passed prior to 4 June 1976 – the night the Sex Pistols performed at the Lesser Free Trade Hall – to prehistory, as in dinosaurs, fossils, folk musicians. New hagiographies about music impresario Tony Wilson (1950-2007) are no doubt at the printers as I write. But how about we spend half an hour mooching round the Rainy City aboard the free buses and trams in search of the underplayed, surprising and tangential – with a few Gen X/6 Music standards for when we’re stuck at the lights.

You might not think Coronation Street a promising departure point, but it gives us an in to Bowton’s Yard. It’s one of those ditties that may prompt unpleasant memories of the BBC TV series Sit Thi Deawn, but listen carefully and you’ll hear it is in fact a Victorian reality show made song. Written by Marsden-born, Stalybridge-based Samuel Laycock, it inspired Tony Warren when he was devising the characters for his Weatherfield/Salford-set soap opera. Granada Studios on Quay Street also played a leading role in disseminating the north-western sound, from regional accents to theme tunes to the Beatles’ first TV appearance , in October 1962.

Happy Mondays, on new year’s day 1990.

Dialect ballads spoke truth to power after Peterloo – memorialised in 2019 by Jeremy Deller’s burial mound-like stone tump – and during the cotton famine . To spread the word, broadsides were run off at printers around the Oldham Street-Swan Street junction. Lancashire songs were central to the folk revival of the 1960s. Harry Boardman, a singer and collector from Failsworth, unearthed many anonymous songs of protest and historical record. Edward II has recorded a reggae version of the Great Flood, about the time the Medlock burst its banks in 1872. Jennifer Reid , from Middleton, performs The New Poor Law Bill a cappella on her album Gradely Manchester.

The most famous folk number, Ewan MacColl’s Dirty Old Town , alludes to a “gasworks wall” or “gasworks croft”, depending on the version. The works were in Ordsall, bounded by West Egerton Street, Liverpool Street and Regent Road. Prior to their demolition in 2019, a prosaic infographic (not quite a “ muriel ”) was placed on the West Egerton Street wall. The Working Class Movement Library is a repository of MacColl’s work and life and has significant holdings of sheet music and song lyrics.

The Hallé Orchestra was founded by Sir Charles Hallé, who was conductor for the first concert at the Free Trade Hall on 30 January 1858. The Hallé premiered Elgar’s Symphony No 1 and Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No 8. The latter, dedicated to the orchestra’s celebrated conductor John Barbirolli, took place at the Kings Hall , a converted tea house at Belle Vue (demolished to make way for a car auction centre) on 2 May 1956. The BBC recorded it a few days later. The third movement, a cavatina, is a swirl of lark-like ascents and descents.

Since 1996, the orchestra’s HQ has been the purpose-built, vibration-proof Bridgewater Hall , with former St Peter’s church in Ancoats, a hulking redbrick Romanesque building, used for rehearsals, recordings and intimate shows. Manchester has an opera house , originally known as the New theatre. Recent shows include The Full Monty and Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out, but it may get weightier fare as the ENO relocates to Manchester over the next five years. The region’s greatest opera singer was, like so much Manchester talent, from way outside town. Tom Burke, a miner from Leigh, was known as the “ Lancashire Caruso ”. What used to be the city’s Hippodrome is now a Wetherspoons named after him.

The Manchester School includes Accrington-born Harrison Birtwistle, Salford’s Peter Maxwell Davies and German immigrant Alexander Goehr, who met at the Royal Manchester College of Music in the 1950s. They founded the New Music Manchester group with pianist John Ogdon, who had attended Manchester Grammar School, and trumpeter Elgar Howarth. Exponents of avant-garde experimentation, they shunned cotton-themed concertos and any kind of parochialism.

Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl in the late 1950s/early 1960s.

If Unesco dispensed rosettes for demolition, Manchester would have many. Most of the old taverns that hosted turns, popular dance salons and music hall venues have been razed, together with mills, warehouses and factories. Concert halls and fun palaces were removed to make way for multistorey car parks and office blocks. The Free Trade Hall , where locals including Gracie Fields, Van der Graaf Generator and James played, as well as Dylan (AKA “ Judas ” as he was called at a gig there in 1966 ), Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis, is now a hotel . Does a ribald, rollicking spirit live on from the boozy days of industrial Manchester? Certainly the refurbished Band on the Wall – which reopened in March – celebrates its location on the foundations of the George & Dragon and nearby Rising Sun pubs.

Every genre of popular music surfaced in Manchester between 1950 and the present, including big band, beat, rhythm and blues, soul, chart-oriented pop, punk, goth and all the strands of post-punk. There are not as many landmarks as songs, partly because, as mentioned, the wrecking ball is unsentimental and also, because pop stars have generally used their art to get away – lyrically first, and then physically. The Bee Gees, who claimed to have practised harmonising at their childhood home at 51 Keppel Road , Chorlton-cum-Hardy, never knowingly screamed a word about the town.

Northern soul, which arrived via Liverpool docks and Burtonwood airbase, drew large followings in Stoke, Wigan, Blackpool and, before any of those , Manchester. The Twisted Wheel on Brazennose Street and, later, Whitworth Street, had gigs by the Hollies and Freddie and the Dreamers, and less well-known bands such as Powerhouse 6 , but is best known for its legendary northern soul nights. The building has gone but Twisted Wheel “lives on”, according to a members-only Facebook page , at Area, 50 Sackville Street. The Ritz, on Whitworth St, survives as an O2 franchise. Originally opened as a dance hall (with a sprung floor) in 1927, it hosted a Dancing in the Dark evening in the 50s and 60s, fronted by Crumpsall’s Phil “King of the Ritz” Moss and his Band (which later became a stalwart on TV’s Come Dancing), and went on to transition through beat, northern soul, disco and mainstream rock scenes. The mobile phone firm also owns the famous art deco-style Apollo , long a fixture for bands on tour. Stockport’s MoR hitmakers 10cc were a classic art school, let’s-go-to-London-asap outfit, but they played here when they came home, as did Sad Café.

The Pistols concert in 1976 made the Lesser Free Trade Hall a holy-of-holies in Manc muso circles, but the Electric Circus , in Collyhurst (birthplace of pianist and crooner Les Dawson), earned its credentials through many seminal punk performances, including the first gig by Warsaw (Joy Division’s first name), and shows by Buzzcocks, John Cooper Clarke, the Fall, the Nosebleeds and Slaughter and the Dogs, among others. The fact it had previously been a cinema, Bernard Manning’s Top Hat club and a bingo hall should surely have made it one for the heritage buffs to list.

The Bridgewater Hall Manchester

Richard Boon and Howard Devoto launched the New Hormones label in 1977 at a then ramshackle, now listed former hat merchants’ warehouse at 50 Newton Street . The first release, the Spiral Scratch EP , was a punk watershed and a declaration that bands needed neither London nor major labels. In 1980, Boon and others started up The Beach Club (a reference to the Situationist slogan “Under the pavement, the beach!”) at Oozits on Newgate Street. In 1978, Factory Records began as a WFH DIY disruptive startup at Alan Erasmus’s first-floor flat at 86 Palatine Road (now blue plaqued), only moving to a proper HQ on Charles Street in 1990 – where it was officially incorporated with the catalogue number FAC 251 (the name of a venue for cover bands on the site, part owned by Peter Hook). The Factory was the name of a night at the Russell Club on Royce Road in Hulme that ran from 1978-80; two years later the Haçienda (FAC 51) opened in a former yacht builders’ shop and warehouse on Whitworth Street West, beside the Rochdale Canal. The site is now occupied by “ iconic ” apartments.

The last Factory catalogue number, FAC 501, was used for the plaque on Wilson’s coffin, and no number adorns designer Peter Saville’s headstone for his business partner in Southern Cemetery . Fabled producer Martin Hannett is also buried at the necropolis – said to be entered via the Smiths’ Cemetry Gates.

There’s no better terminus than a musical graveyard. Inevitably, dozens of Manchester music sites are missing from this hop, skip and jump, including Rochdale’s recording studios, Festival of the Tenth Summer venues and countless bedrooms, garages and rave locations. But most tell versions of the same story, just as some songs seem like Venn diagrams of influence; Oasis by Happy Mondays sounds like New Order with lyrics by Morrissey or Ian Curtis, on a bad day (“You went too far, and it’s gone all the wrong way”). If you want to aurally vacuum up every Manc motif in a single song, steam on in to Mike Garry and Joe Duddell’s St Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H Wilson (Andrew Weatherall Remix; lyrics here ), perhaps while walking from the thrusting Aviva Studios/Factory International behemoth to the Epping Walk Bridge to search hopelessly – à la 80s – for Hulme Crescents and the dead souls of yesteryear.
