Our day long trip was the perfect amount of touring in Siena and San Gimignano free time, one Chianti winery run by a small family with a fabulous fresh cooked lunch. The small group of 8 people was awesome and really allowed for a special experience for our first trip to the Tuscany region. Can't wait to come back and take another tour with Walks!

Off the Viator site we choose and fully paid for a small group full day excursion to Pisa and Florence. The morning of Arrival a man called yelling at me what port was I in. I said I didn’t know. Bottom line the driver was at a different port and wouldn’t be there for 1 hour we said ok. In 5 minutes he called me back and said it would be an additional 100 Euros. So more money for a shorty time. I told him never mind. I asked if he didn’t track the cruise ships like all of the other Viator agencies do. I again he yells he doesn’t have time to do that. He picked us up right at the boat and took us all over Rome. He hit all the well-known sights and also many, many not as well known. An unguided day trip to the countryside visiting some medieval villages and a wine and food experience for lunch at a family run winery or a lovely local trattoria.

Tours proceed in inclement weather. Museum reservation fees and pre-purchased tickets are non-refundable. SumUP handling/service fees are non-refundable.

The drivers with whom we collaborate are not guides. They are very experienced, knowledgeable and personable, however, they are not licensed guides of Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca or Volterra. Iif you include any of these towns in the day’s itinerary, there will not be a guided tour included. It is free time for your party to visit the town at your leisure.

Tuscany stands out as one of the most prolific wine regions in all of Europe. Check out one of the many delightful food festivals, folkloric rituals and historical re-enactments.

What is the minimum age required to drive the Fiat 500?

18 years. A valid driver’s license is required, in its original form. We cannot accept a copy or a picture.

Do I need to have previous experience with manual gears to drive the Fiat 500?

Yes, prior experience with manual gear is recommended. At the start of the experience, our tour leader will provide a demonstration on how to operate this specific vehicle. However, having some familiarity with driving stick is essential. Please note that we reserve the right to terminate the participation of any driver who cannot safely control the car, and refunds cannot be provided in such cases.

What happens if it rains?

We run our tours rain or shine. In case of extreme weather conditions, we will propose an alternative date or refund the price paid for the tour.

Is there any chance this tour will be canceled?

On the rare occasion the tour is canceled, we'll inform you as soon as possible. We will work with you to reschedule your tour when possible or provide a full refund.

How many people can accommodate in a Fiat 500?

A Fiat 500 can accommodate 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.

Is lunch included in the price of the tour?

Yes, lunch is included! You’ll have a traditional Tuscan meal.

What if I have food allergies, intolerances, or other dietary requirements?

What if I don’t drink alcohol but I’d still like to join the tour?

Youths are allowed as passengers in the vehicle, though please keep in mind that there are no rear seat belts.

The myriad of tiny towns you've never heard of, vineyards, hills, and networks of highways to cross en route to your destination are the region's entire charm, but also are what makes it so complicated to navigate. However, a great hotel (and accommodating concierge) can help smooth out the process—which is why we've rounded up Condé Nast Traveler's highest regarded Tuscany hotels. Read on for 11 of the best hotels in Tuscany.

It’s been eons since a new hotel graced Porto Ercole, a chic but discreet village on the Monte Argentario peninsula that’s home to Caravaggio’s tomb. The newcomer creating ripples on this part of the rock-strewn Maremma coastline is petite La Roqqa, a cliffside retreat whose distinctive coral-orange façade and secluded views of the Tyrrhenian Sea provide a forward-looking alternative to Hotel Il Pellicano, the area’s sine qua non grande dame since 1965. In the 55 rooms and suites, floor-to-ceiling windows let sunshine flood onto walls of sage green or Terra di Siena orange, which pop against crisp white bed linen. Designers Palomba Serafini, Milanese masters of uncluttered contemporary chic, have mixed midcentury pieces and Gaetano Pesce’s iconic Up chairs with ultramodern features, including an eye-catching white central staircase spiraling from the entrance. On the alfresco rooftop, Ferragamo-clad locals sip Negronis gilded by sunset rays in view of the 16th-century Forte Stella and harbor yachts below. Aperitivo hour turns into dinner at the outdoor Scirocco restaurant, where chef Francesco Ferretti knocks up fresh sea bass and other local seafood capped with Venetian grappa. Days spent lounging at the hotel’s smart Isolotto Beach Club are broken up by lunches of avocado and tuna salads paired with a local white. Il Pelicano is one of Italy's most legendary and best-known hotels, one which has been open since 1979 and where Sophia Loren and other Hollywood royalty have stayed. The bedrooms are crisp and bright: some have ocean views, some have balconies and terraces, and some have floors made of Carrera marble. The more casual restaurant, Pelligrill, is considered a classic with the yacht crowd and overlooks the pool and ocean, perfect for sunset; while the 2023 Michelin-starred Restaurant Il Pellicano earned accolades for its creative uses of ingredients from land and sea including pigeon, lobster, and shrimp.

Casa Iris Arrow

The location: Orbetello, a small, walled coastal town on a lagoon and a peninsula, Grosseto, once the site of an ancient Etruscan settlement; located midway between Florence and Rome

This luxurious, all-done-up bed and breakfast, set in a peach colored palazzo on the town's main drag, is highly personal, with just three bedrooms inside and the owners filling the roles of concierges. Before they purchased it, the 15th century property was full of historic frescoes—the owners proceeded to hire a restorer who had worked on the Sistine Chapel to make it their own. A cozy breakfast is served to guests in the communal kitchen, featuring fresh apricot jam; and the rooms are works of art, with walls whose historic layers of paint have been scraped into designs.

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco Arrow

The location: Montalcino, a hilltop town famed for its production of Brunello di Montalcino wine, made from the town's sangiovese grosso grapes—it's an hour and a half by car from Florence and 45 minutes by car from Siena

We've already listed the terrific amenities—which, yes, include truffle hunting—but if you need more information on Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, we'll go on. This Tuscan estate is on 5,000 acres and has 42 suites and 11 villas. Travel reporter and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Laura Itzkowitz —who lived in Rome previously and writes often about Italy—describes the bedrooms as “lavish” in her hotel review for the magazine:

“If money were no object,” she writes, “I would check into one of the sumptuous villas and never leave. Each one comes with a private heated pool, though some feature woodburning pizza ovens, a home theater, or tennis court.”

This nine-suite retreat, formerly an actual family home, is set within a 12th century medieval castle. But in spite of the down-home, rustic setting—there are no TVs—this place is totally chic. Mario Testino shot a Vogue photo shoot here featuring Lara Stone. The food is an offering that sets Castello di Vicarello apart from the others in the Tuscany hotel landscape. Here's how contributor Sophie Goodwin describes it in her first-person Condé Nast Traveler hotel review: “Ingredients are fresh from the vegetable garden, eggs straight from the chicken coop, and cakes and bread baked every morning. Breakfast is slices of Pecorino with bread, eggs with sunny orange yolks, and strong Italian coffee. Wild boar is breaded and served with a dollop of olive-oily-aioli, the al-dente spaghetti comes with fresh tomato.”

Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa Arrow

The Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa, a 180-room luxury resort hotel by Marriott International, is surrounded by 1,500 acres of green hills and land—and by all of the special perks, amenities, and experiences you would expect from the brand. These include marble bathrooms in the rooms, cooking classes from the restaurant, and destination weddings packages. The ideal location in the heart of Tuscany means exploring the region's vineyards, tasting wine, and biking, hiking, and horseback riding are all activities on demand—not to mention the ability to stroll through the historic towns of Lucca and Barga.

Italy writer Bridget Arsenault kicks off her hotel review of Villa Fontelunga in the dreamiest way possible:

“Set amid 200 olive trees,” she writes, “Villa Fontelunga's marmalade-colored building appears against the blue sky as you enter the driveway. Set within the beautiful hilltop town of Cortona, the hotel offers spectacular views across the Val di Chiana in the heart of Tuscany. An intimate, fairly remote Tuscan getaway, this hotel takes some research to track down. Once there, you'll find everyone from honeymooners to Italian adventure-seekers inspired by Under The Tuscan Sun to retired couples enjoying la dolce vita.” If that isn't inspiring enough, the details she reports—including the two tiny dogs who run around the property, the Tuesday and Thursday chef-hosted dinner parties, and the honesty bar by the pool—really seal the deal.

This dreamy farmhouse-style 16-room boutique hotel emulates the Tuscan experience to a tee. Guests enter a secluded tangle of ivy, rose gardens, stone walls, and wood beams, the stuff of Italian storybooks. The rooms and the dining program alike are top-tier. Bedrooms are full of antiques and rain showers, while the food offered includes fresh ingredients from the on-site garden and olive oil made on-property. The food was the favorite part for reviewer, Bridget Arsenault again, who also highly recommends the bookable cooking class:

“There's daily lunch (poolside or in the whimsical garden) and you can order drinks throughout the day,” she writes. “Dinner is an otherworldly affair. You can also book an on-site cooking class and learn to make Tuscan classics like ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, fresh pastas with ragu, and tiramisu.”

She also reports a romantic vibe, and says that you'll find plenty of honeymooners and couples here.

It's hard to go wrong when you're staying on a serene archipelago surrounded by turquoise harbors, smack between land and sea—the glittering ocean and Tuscan wine country. At Cala del Porto, guests get the best of both worlds. But the resort itself takes the joys even further with five-star service, in-room balconies, four restaurants, and planned experiences and excursions that are made accessible, including private yacht tours, golfing and wellness packages, and biking and wine tasting tours.

How to Get from Rome to Florence

Getting from Rome to Florence only takes 80 minutes with the high-speed railway line from the main train station (Termini).

By bus, it takes about 3,5 hours to get to Florence, driving through the lush countryside. You can get your tickets online . 

If you’re looking for a bit more flexibility in your plan, then renting a car in Italy is also a great way to get around the country. This is because Florence is accessible by car and less difficult to navigate than busier cities.

How to Get from Florence to Cinque Terre

To get to Cinque Terre from Florence takes 2.5 hours by train and the same by car. However, we wouldn’t recommend visiting Cinque Terre by car as it’s difficult to get into the villages, and parking fees are really expensive.

You can easily explore the region by train, hopping from one village to another. The train runs every couple of minutes, and you can either get a single ticket for 4 EUR (4.40 USD), a day pass (16 EUR/17.60 USD), or a two-day pass (29 EUR/32 USD). This also includes entrance to the hiking routes.

Alternatively, you can use the Cinque Terre Ferry (a day pass is 25 EUR/27.50 USD) or join a guided tour . 

Where to Stay in Cinque Terre

Most accommodations inside Cinque Terre National Park are booked far in advance. Hotels are mostly available in Riomaggiore and Monterosso but expect to pay a premium per night.

On the other hand, a more affordable option is to stay in La Spezia , where hotels start at 35 EUR (38,50 USD) a night.

Getting to italy.

If you’re starting out in Rome , there are two airports you can fly into, Ciampino (CIA) and Fiumicino (FC). Flights arrive here from all over the world.

After you arrive, jump on the express train from Fiumicino to Rome’s main train station (14 EUR/15.40 USD). Ciampino also has shuttle buses that will drop you at the subway in the middle of Rome. ( book your tickets online here )

I would travel back to Florence again and again.

One, I know that there is always something new to discover in Italy, and two, there is delicious food, a multitude of day trips to dreamy small towns in Italy near Florence , beautiful architecture, intriguing history, and an endless number of things to do in Florence. It is the perfect Tuscan city.

1. Piazza del Duomo

Located in the heart of Florence, the square surrounding the Duomo is often overflowing with tourists, rain or shine. The Piazza contains:

• Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (Duomo)
• Brunelleschi's Dome
• Giotto's Bell Tower
• Baptistry of St. John
• Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

2. The Duomo: Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Formally known as Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, this prominent landmark fills the Florentine skyline.

If you download the Rick Steves Audio Europe tour and listen to the Florence Duomo audio tour, you will find out so much more information than if you simply wander around the square.

Did you know the Duomo took over 140 years to complete?

Additional facts to know about the Duomo:

• The Gates of Paradise on the Baptistry are famous bronze doors in front of the cathedral that depict Bible scenes
• Fillipo Brunelleschi, a trained goldsmith, had no prior training before building the domed roof
• The dome on the cathedral was an architectural marvel ahead of its time standing over ten stories high
• The Pantheon in Rome was the inspiration for the dome
• The Santa Maria del Fiore stands as the third largest cathedral in the world
• It took 16 years to complete the dome
• The exterior is covered in a decorative mix of pink, white and green marble
• Entrance to the cathedral is FREE

3. Climb Brunelleschi's Dome

Brunelleschi's Dome dominates the Florence cityscape. It is an absolute masterpiece of art built between 1420 and 1436 by Filippo Brunelleschi . It stands today as the largest masonry vault in the world created without wooden reinforcements.

Climb 463 steps (there is no elevator) to view the inside of the dome and the majestic view of Florence from the balcony. You need to purchase an OPA Combination ticket to access the dome and reserve a time slot prior to your entrance (this time slot cannot be changed)

4. Take Pictures of Ponte Vecchio

Wander through some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River where you’ll also find Ponte Vecchio.

Ponte Vecchio is an iconic spot for photos if you are looking for Instagram worthy photo spots .

5. Walk Across the Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio was built for the house of Medici when they moved from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti (across the Arno River) and felt they needed a private route to keep them connected with the Uffizi yet separate from the masses.

The  Corridoio Vasariano  (built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565) runs above the shops along the Ponte Vecchio. Meander across the bridge exploring the shops as you go. Shops have been a part of the bridge since the 13th century.

6. Visit the Uffizi Museum

Chris purchased tickets for the Uffizi Gallery for a mid-afternoon entrance. The museum is located adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria.

We definitely didn't complain about enjoying a little air-conditioned comfort during the hottest part of the day.

I recommend the audio tour through the museum. I do believe our girls had their fill of nude statues once we finished the tour!

The Uffizi Gallery is one of THE places to visit in Florence .

7. Palazzo Vecchio

The  Palazzo Vecchio , the town hall of Florence, Italy, overlooks Piazza della Signoria, where you will find a COPY of Michelangelo's David statue as well as an open-air sculpture gallery in the adjacent  Loggia dei Lanzi .

8. Piazza della Signoria

Note * Just outside the Uffizi Museum entrance in the Piazza della Signoria you will find the replica to Michelangelo's statue of David. The original David is on display in the Galleria dell'Accademia .

As the center of Florentine political life, Piazza della Signoria has been "...the scene of great triumphs, such as the  return of the Medici in 1530  as well as the  Bonfire of the Vanities  instigated by  Savonarola , who was then himself burned at the stake here in  1498  after he was denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic. This market is perfect as a gourmet food court that also sells fresh, local ingredients.

10. San Lorenzo Outdoor Market

Peruse this sprawling market through the San Lorenzo neighborhood. It is the original leather market. Be prepared for a bit of haggling.

11. Mercato Nuovo

Locally known as the Mercato Porcellino, this market is where you can find the bronze statue of a wild boar (Il Porcellino) among other treasures.

12. Mercato Sant’Ambrosio

A covered indoor and outdoor market boasting local ingredients and an authentic Italian market experience.

Views and Vistas

13. piazzale michelangelo.

While searching for things to do in Florence, Chris found a great lookout point above Florence. If you are on foot, be prepared for the many stairs leading up to Piazzale Michelangelo.

The stairs aren’t so fun, but the view is spectacular.

It is always crowded in the evening when tourists come to watch the sunset along with views of the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio.

Plus, art students sit on the steps drawing the scene below.

Since we visited Piazzale Michelango the first night with only our youngest daughter, we returned the next night with our middle daughter, Misha, who is an artist.

If you arrive a little too late, the steps will already be full of artists and tourists along with much of the wall space. There is still plenty of room to enjoy the amazing view.

14. Explore Fort Belvedere

The fort is walled off on one side with a six or seven foot wall and an equally high wall on the other side of the road to allow privacy for the big fancy estates.

If you wish to explore the interior of Fort Belvedere, formally called Fortezza di Santa Maria in San Giorgio del Belvedere , it is located at the highest point on the Boboli hill, a strategic position that allowed it to perform various functions in the past.

Entrance to the outdoor spaces and gardens is free; tickets are required to visit the exhibitions inside the fort. 

Another great reason to visit Fort Belvedere is to visit the bar where you can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif and the stunning view.

15. Enjoy Italian Food

Who doesn't visit Italy without the anticipation of trying delicious Italian food? Gnocchi anyone?

McDonald’s at the Train Station

After a long, hot, and tiring morning trying to take transit on a local holiday, our family headed to the train station and found ourselves looking for seats at McDonald’s. We weren’t the only ones. So many people jockeying for seats and only a little bit of table and chair space.

We hung out at McDonald’s in the Florence train station for awhile. While it was NOT on our list of things to do in Florence, it was a passable option as the weather was hot, we needed to feed our girls, they were familiar with the food, and we had a train to catch after lunch. Sometimes you just have to go with what is familiar and easy.

I couldn't recommend a couple's getaway to Florence more! Though we had to sightsee in the rain at times, we loved the leather market, our stay at the 5 Star Sina Hotel Villa Medici , quaint cafes and restaurants, and exploring the Tuscany countryside! There were so many things to do in Florence!

27. Take Local Transit and A Plug for Actually Buying Tickets

Chris and I ventured into the heart of Florence to the Duomo with our youngest daughter, Kristen, on a recent trip.

You could take the risk of not buying transit tickets as you ride the bus around Florence, and 9 times out of 10, you might get away with it. But on the tenth time...

We caught the bus outside of our hotel ( Florence bus schedule ) and sat across from these two punk boys who were noisy, had their feet up on the seats across from them, and were simply being obnoxious.

A bus patrolman was sitting behind us and popped out of his seat once the bus started moving. Chris handily produced our tickets, but the boys had not bothered to purchase tickets. They had to hand over their ID.

And...they got a ticket!!! They spent the rest of the bus ride smack talking the bus patrolman.

I have to admit, it is kind of nice when karma happens. It was... satisfying.

You could get a taxi to travel from the train station to the hotel, or if you have been traveling all day long , it is a a good time to stretch and a relatively short walk to reach the beautiful Sina Hotel Villa Medici.

The King Suite—complete with two bathrooms, a sitting room, and a bedroom—is a charming and beautifully appointed suite.

There are plenty of breakfast options in Florence, but if possible, I recommend checking to see if breakfast is included with your hotel stay. It is not always the case, so be sure to check. With different levels of reward status , breakfast may be included.

Chris and I often choose to eat in the hotel dining room when it is included. It will save you time and money.

Funny story. I am a fan of oatmeal for breakfast. While staying in Florence, I made a request for oatmeal since it wasn't on the buffet table. I think they had to make it from scratch!

After a long wait, I was rewarded with the Papa-bear sized bowl. Even the waiter walked by and said, “ Oh, that’sa ... biga !”.

Florence for Families

For a different travel reward points option , the Hilton Garden Inn , located a short distance outside the city center in Florence , fulfilled the need for two rooms when we traveled with two of our teen daughters.

Note, the rules for occupancy in European hotels can be quite strict .

At a hotel in Madrid, Spain, Chris and I stood in line at the front desk behind a couple with a young toddler in tow. We listened as they argued with the front desk agent. The desk agent would not budge on the "two person per room rule".

The couple argued that their son could sleep in their bed with them. Having made the reservations weeks prior to their arrival, they were disappointed when the only option was to stay at a sister hotel that would allow a third person in the hotel room. However, the hotel was further from the city center.

If in doubt, check before you make the reservation.

We happened to visit Florence with our girls on Republic Day, also known as Festa della Repubblica in Italian (Festival of the Republic). It is a national holiday in Italy on June 2 each year. It celebrates the day in 1946 when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and become a republic.

Welcome to the experience of trying to be a "tourist" on a national holiday .

We were scheduled to take one of our day trips from Florence to Fiesole and waited for over 40 minutes with our luggage in tow at a bus stop.

One Florentine lady at the bus stop was becoming more and more agitated by the moment. She was willing to complain to all that would listen in Italian and English.

“Stupida busa. Stupida city. Don’t they realize that more-a people are off-a for the holiday and want to go-a places. There are more-a people in-a the city today. Stupida. ”

In her defense, she had fresh steaks in her grocery bags and still far to go.

When a bus finally came, she was barely able to squish on it as people were spilling out the door. The four of us with all of our luggage never would had fit on the bus. Trailing our luggage behind us, we walked about twenty minutes to the next bus stop. 

Our plans for the day included stowing our luggage close to the train station and venturing on a day trip to Fiesole. Our day trip just took a detour.

Our transportation troubles continued on Republic Day as we got off at the wrong stop and eventually found ourselves dragging suitcases past the Duomo over cobbled stones .

We finally reached a Store n' Go luggage place in Florence, only to find that every. single. locker. was filled.

Ahhhh, what to do? We headed to the train station hoping to find luggage storage there. After a long and tiring morning, we found ourselves looking for seats at McDonald’s at the train station.

So, when you are planning things to do in Florence (or any destination), be sure to check for local holidays. These holidays may have a significant impact on your ability to catch transit, easily maneuver with extra tourists around, or even find places to eat.

While purchasing gelato one evening (which you should really do at least once a day in Italy!), Chris chatted with the young girl dishing up our treats. She spoke in her broken English and Chris in his broken Italian.

She asked where we were from. Chris then mentioned how beautiful it was in Florence. The girl kind of shrugged her shoulders and indicated “meh”.

Y ou can’t beat an agriturismo. Rural locations, owners whose main job is farming, plus food and drink produced on site all add up to a charmingly informal stay. There is rarely a reception desk and there’ll be dogs and crowing roosters to contend with, but they offer brilliant food and a friendly welcome. And they are not all buried in the countryside; there are lots of agriturismos around Italy’s 5,000 miles of coast. Here are 10 within walking or cycling distance of the beach.

Barrani, Liguria

The Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s top destinations, and can have crowds and prices to match, but this family farm’s five hectares of vines and olives are in the quieter village of Corniglia. A 15-minute walk from the station (there’s also a shuttle bus), it has six en suite rooms, and dinner might be pansotti (triangular ravioli) with borage and walnut sauce, followed by stuffed mussels. South of the Amalfi coast, the less showy Cilento area offers rugged hills, quiet beaches, lower prices and a slower pace.
