Incredibly frustrating experience!

Not sure why your app does not notify of changes to seats we’ve booked for months. Went to check in and saw my wife and I were separated by 12 rows AND on opposite sides of the 787, without any notification. This is unacceptable and too easy to remedy. A simple e-mail or text would suffice to let me know to work this issue, but no, you just separate us without a word! Then, spent 50 minutes on hold to change seats way back in economy and had to ask to get economy plus bundle refunded. Now on hold to talk to a supervisor because the representative is not authorized to do anything other than change seats and give us a refund of our bundle. Though she was very nice and efficient (after 50 minutes on hold) she was not authorized to do anything to bring me back as a customer. I am reconsidering United as my preferred airline. This has been incredibly frustrating. Oh, and to register a complaint, I have to go to your website and “fill out a form.” I would expect to be contacted by a customer service rep directly after this poor service. Sincerely, Thomas Lawhead

Great Agent Frustrating online system

And checking in I had two experiences: the first was online, and was extremely frustrating, and did not provide options, reflecting my personal circumstances. Additionally, I couldn’t find a phone number for customer service while I was trying to check in and encountering problems, me so I had to engage a separate search. The second experience wash great: with the help from your agent Gretchen. Gretchen positively delightful. I explained my handicap to her and she help me find appropriate accommodation. She however didn’t have authority to help me with the United online system failure regarding my baggage check. Luckily with her help and encouragement, iI reengaged the online check in. I want to make a special point of stating that with Gretchen’s help and courtesy, what seemed on the verge of becoming a very bad experience ruined to a satisfying one. She was very charming and polite and found creative way to sort out my personal problem. The problem she was not able to help me with, is my coming that comparing United economy class, to those of other airlines like Jet Blue, American Southwest Delta, and and all the international airlines I use. The best airlines (Southwest, Jet Blue, Jet Blue, for example allow economy customers one free, checked bag, and addition to the carry-on. Except for the lovely agent, Gretchen, I was very disappointed in United Airlines performance so far with regards to this flight.

Frustrating experience

Had a bad experience last night at Aspen Airport. Flight was delayed because of an incoming aircraft delay. Notification was horrible, leading many people to go to the airport and wait for four hours. Fortunately I have a residence nearby and was able to go back to my house and wait there. There was, of course the expense of the Uber. Then got back to the airport around 945 pm and everything seemed good -we loaded on the plane and pulled away from the gate and then had to cancel because of lack of deicing equipment. I was automatically rebooked to this morning. That flight time changed suddenly a little after 7 am and then when I went on your app to rebook, it offered the option of choosing standby without losing your original confirmation. I went to do that, but was unable to do anything other than confirm a different flight. I did that, despite that not being my preference, and then was not assigned to a seat. When I went to choose seats, the first class seats which I had paid for in my previous flight were not available. No big deal. But when I went to choose an exit row seat, it wanted to charge me $69 more despite the fact that I had originally had a first class booking. I spoke to an agent via the text option and she was unable to help me! What’s the point of having a customer service agent if they can’t provide service to the customer? overall, United has some big issues and needs to understand that there has to be a focus on the customer.

The ultimate guide to getting upgraded on United Airlines

Ryan Smith

With increased ticket prices and the same reduced pandemic-era status requirements in 2022, many United Airlines MileagePlus members have recently qualified for Premier status .

As a result, it's becoming harder to score flight upgrades. We often recommend booking the seat or hotel room you want with points to avoid being disappointed if an upgrade isn't available.

That said, despite upgrades becoming less common, they are not impossible, and there are several ways for United Airlines passengers to land a better seat.

We'll walk through everything you need to know about upgrade eligibility, priority and more for United Airlines.

Searching for upgrade inventory

Before you can score a better seat on your next United-operated flight, you must find seats the carrier has designated for upgrades.

This is based on United's fare classes, which you can review in this comprehensive guide . United uses three different fare classes to denote upgrade inventory, as follows:

  • RN : Upgrades to Premium Plus for all passengers.
  • PZ : Upgrades to domestic first class or Polaris business class for PlusPoints (issued to Premier Platinum and 1K members), upgrades using miles and instant upgrades for Premier Platinum members and lower.
  • PN : Upgrades for Global Services members using PlusPoints, and instant upgrades for GS and Premier 1K members.

Armed with this information, turn to United's "expert mode." While expert mode didn't work properly on united.com for several months, it seems to be back in our tests.

After enabling this hidden feature, you'll see how many seats are available in each fare bucket when searching for revenue flights on United.

Generally speaking, you'll have the most luck finding upgrade inventory far in advance or just before departure.

For example, look at the following flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Tahiti's Faaa International Airport (PPT). This flight has wide-open seats in every fare class.

united airlines trip

Note that "PN9" means that there are nine or more Polaris seats available as upgrades for Global Services travelers using PlusPoints or miles, while "PZ9" indicates that there are also nine or more seats available for mileage and PlusPoint upgrades for all non-Global Service travelers. Finally, the "RN9" indicates nine or more seats are available for mileage and PlusPoint upgrades.

It's worth noting that upgrade inventory is different than regular award inventory. However, since upgrade space generally correlates with award space, it's no surprise that on this flight, you can also use miles to fly in Polaris business class with "I9."

As you might expect, that means there are nine or more seats for a business-class saver mileage redemption.

Let's look at another example with less availability — from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO).

united airlines trip

This plane doesn't have a Premium Plus cabin, but there are two seats left in first class — indicated by "J2."

One of those seats can be confirmed using PlusPoints or miles, as shown by "PZ1." One TPG staffer has routinely confirmed last-minute upgrades , with United releasing first-class seats to the "PZ" fare class shortly before departure.

Alternatively, full-fare economy Premier 1K and Global Services members can confirm this seat — thanks to "PN1." We'll discuss instant upgrades in the next section.

There are no saver first-class seats for general members ("I0"). Additionally, there are no first-class saver seats for mid- and upper-tier Premier members/premium United Chase credit card holders ("IN0").

Upgrade priority

united airlines trip

Just finding upgrade inventory is only half of the puzzle. You also need to understand the order in which your upgrade will be processed in case it doesn't clear when you book. United's upgrades are split into two categories:

Instant upgrades at the time of ticketing

United Premier members traveling on the two highest-priced economy-fare classes — Y and B — are eligible for an instant upgrade when ticketing on select flights (assuming PZ inventory is available). For Premier 1K and Global Services members, full-fare economy tickets clear into the PN fare and are applicable to M fares as well.

In addition, customers applying miles or a certificate to move up to the next cabin will also be able to confirm the upgrade instantly when the necessary fare buckets (above) are available.

In my experience, M-, B- and Y-fare economy-class tickets are often more expensive than first-class tickets.

Waitlist upgrades

Overwhelmingly, your upgrade won't clear at the time of booking, so you'll end up on the waitlist for an upgrade. This may not be confirmed until a few days before the flight or may even happen at the gate just before departure. Unfortunately, there are plenty of upgrades that never clear.

For requests on the waitlist, United will clear them in the following order of priority:

  • Global Services passengers: Regardless of the fare class, United will clear upgrades for Global Services members before any other Premier members.
  • Premium Plus passengers: Passengers booked in the O, A and R fare classes (which represent United Premium Plus) have higher upgrade priority than those in economy class.
  • Upgrade type : Those redeeming PlusPoints or miles for an upgrade are prioritized ahead of elite members relying on a complimentary Premier upgrade.
  • Premier elite status of the traveler: After Premium Plus passengers and upgrade type, elite status is the next tie-breaker. United Global Services members take the lead, followed by Premier 1K, Premier Platinum, Premier Gold and Premier Silver members.
  • Fare class: For regular economy tickets, the priority order for different fare classes is as follows: Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L, K, G. Complimentary Premier upgrades on award tickets will be prioritized after the lowest paid fare class.
  • Chase United MileagePlus Club cardholders and Presidential Plus cardholders.
  • United Corporate Preferred participants.
  • Chase United MileagePlus cardholders with $25,000 in annual spending.
  • Date and time of the request.

Not all of these factors will come into play on every flight. However, if multiple passengers with the same elite status tier request an upgrade, United will move down the list and use fare class as a tie-breaker.

If that doesn't work, the system will continue to the credit card type the passenger holds (if any), spending threshold and, finally, the time the request was submitted.

united airlines trip

In September 2019, United got rid of its old system using Global Premier Upgrades and Regional Premier Upgrades . United replaced those with the current upgrade certificate currency: PlusPoints.

Here's how you earn PlusPoints:

  • 40 PlusPoints when you reach Platinum.
  • 280 PlusPoints when you reach Premier 1K or Global Services.
  • 20 PlusPoints for every 2,000 Premier qualifying points earned beyond 15,000 (2022) and 18,000 (2023) Premier qualifying points needed for Premier 1K status.

United MileagePlus members who meet the requirements for Platinum status and subsequently qualify for 1K will earn a total of 320 PlusPoints.

PlusPoints can be used for another traveler's reservations. If you want to upgrade your friend with PlusPoints, you'll need to log in to your MileagePlus account and have their six-digit confirmation number handy.

Within PlusPoints, there are two categories and varying cost factors to understand.

You can use PlusPoints to upgrade in various ways, and we'll cover pricing below. What's important to understand here is that you can use PlusPoints to put yourself on the waitlist, similar to what we described above.

united airlines trip

Notice that United informs you of the policy during the request process. Choose the seats you want to request with your PlusPoints and see the relevant prices. You'll only pay with your PlusPoints if the upgrade clears. You can also set different preferences for each leg of your trip.

You'll need the following amounts of PlusPoints for upgrades on international flights with a Polaris cabin (i.e., international flights outside of Canada and Central America):

  • Economy to Premium Plus : 20 PlusPoints.
  • Premium Plus to Polaris : 30 PlusPoints.
  • Economy to Polaris (Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V and W fares) : 40 PlusPoints.
  • Economy to Polaris (S, T, L, K and G fares) : 80 PlusPoints.
  • ANA, Copa and Lufthansa eligible economy class to business: 40 PlusPoints.

Skip the waitlist upgrades

While United advertises skip-the-waitlist upgrades exclusively for Premier 1K members, they're few and far between.

If you find one, you can skip the waitlist and upgrade immediately to Polaris business class on long-haul international flights, subject to availability. If your itinerary also includes domestic legs, you'll be waitlisted for those — unless immediate upgrade space is available.

united airlines trip

While you'll typically pay 20 PlusPoints to move from economy to premium economy or 40 PlusPoints to get into business, prices to "skip the waitlist" are much higher — they vary by flight, departure date and availability.

Still, they can get as high as 100 PlusPoints (and even higher during peak times) to move from economy to Polaris.

This represents a 250%-275% increase in cost. In addition to the higher costs, you should note that these points are nonrefundable. This means that once the upgrade is confirmed, there's no way to get your PlusPoints back if you need to cancel the flight. They also can't be used to confirm upgrades on other flights if you change your flights.

Thus, upgrading immediately using PlusPoints on certain long-haul flights is possible. As long you're ticketed in the W or higher fare class, this feature will be available to Premium Plus and Polaris, subject to availability. Lastly, this feature isn't available within 30 days of departure.

MileagePlus upgrade awards

United also allows you to redeem miles for an upgrade. You can even check the number of miles (and possibly co-pay) required on the airline's upgrade award chart .

For example, TPG points and miles reporter Kyle Olsen has booked a trip with United from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

He booked the cheapest, non-basic-economy ticket in the L fare class. According to United, an upgrade costs 27,500 miles plus $125 one-way. Since he's a Premier 1K member, the $125 upgrade co-pay is waived.

united airlines trip

On his flight, though, there is no PZ fare class availability, so he'd be left on the waitlist.

He could have also opted to redeem 20 PlusPoints to be added to the upgrade waitlist or pay $567 for this one-way upgrade.

Since 27,500 United miles are worth $332.75 based on TPG's most recent valuations , it might be worth using miles instead of paying cash, but in all honesty, it's unlikely an upgrade would clear on this flight unless you pay cash to confirm it.

You can request these upgrades when purchasing your ticket or after purchase by clicking on "Manage your reservation" and clicking the "Upgrade cabin" button at the top of the screen.

MileagePlus upgrades are valid on most paid tickets on United-operated flights, excluding basic economy tickets, if seats are available.

Complimentary Premier upgrades

united airlines trip

United is rather generous in making complimentary Premier upgrades available to members with every tier of Premier elite status. This includes one companion traveling on the same reservation — even for lowly Silver elite members like myself.

CPUs will be automatically requested for you on all eligible flights, which are paid tickets on United- and United Express-operated flights (excluding basic economy tickets) in the following regions:

  • Continental U.S. (excluding premium, transcontinental services).
  • Hawaii (West Coast departures only).
  • Central America.
  • The Caribbean.
  • Oceania (excluding Tahiti).

If you're traveling to Hawaii, complimentary upgrades are only available on flights from California — specifically Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), John Wayne Airport (SNA) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Suppose you're traveling on United's 11-hour flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Honolulu or departing from any of the carrier's other hubs. In that case, you'd need to redeem miles or use PlusPoints (discussed below).

The same applies to the carrier's nonstop, premium transcontinental flights — from Newark or Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Los Angeles or San Francisco.

As noted above, select elite members are eligible for instant upgrades when booked into the highest fare classes, as long as there's upgrade inventory available. If you aren't upgraded instantly — or are booked into a lower fare class — complimentary upgrades, in theory, begin to clear based on your elite status at the following windows:

  • Premier 1K : 96 hours/four days before departure.
  • Premier Platinum : 72 hours/three days before departure.
  • Premier Gold : 48 hours/two days before departure.
  • Premier Silver : Day of departure.

Award tickets are normally not eligible for CPUs, but you can circumvent this rule if you hold a United cobranded credit card .

Related: What is United Airlines' elite status worth?

Bottom line

United offers several options for upgrading your flights to a more comfortable seat. Most of these options are benefits for Premier elite members — as you would expect.

Even if you don't fly United frequently enough to earn elite status, you should still be able to upgrade your trip with cash or miles.

Always check upgrade inventory first, as the carrier is notoriously stingy at opening up inventory — especially in advance.

You can also earn miles in many other ways, including using a United credit card, transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards®, dining, shopping and much more.

Based on our most recent analysis, NerdWallet values United MileagePlus miles at 1.2 cents apiece. To determine the value of reward miles, we compared cash prices and reward redemptions for economy round-trip routes across several destinations and dates. We divided the cost of the cash ticket by the cost of the reward ticket to determine a “cent per mile” value for each flight, then averaged this value across several flights and dates. Read more about how we arrived at these figures .

Therefore, this is a baseline value for United miles, based on real-world data collected from hundreds of economy routes, not a maximized value. In other words, you should aim for award redemptions that offer 1.2 cents or more in value from your United miles.

To determine the value of your miles for specific flights, divide the cash value of the ticket (less any applicable taxes/fees if you redeem miles) by the number of miles required for the flight. So if the ticket costs either $100, or 15,000 miles + $10 in taxes/fees, the math would be as follows:

($100 – $10) / 15,000 = 0.006, or 0.6 cent per mile.

United MileagePlus miles value over time

During NerdWallet's last valuation, United MileagePlus miles increased in value for the first time.

While United MileagePlus can pay dividends for some travelers, here’s the bad news: United, as a whole, ranked seventh out of nine airlines in NerdWallet’s 2024 best overall airline analysis .

Its loyalty program, MileagePlus, didn’t fare much better, coming in fifth place in our airline rewards program analysis .

Here's a closer look at how United competed across subcategories:

Seventh in rewards rate .

Third in operations .

Fourth in elite status benefits .

Seventh in terms of total fees .

United tied for third with JetBlue, Hawaiian and Alaska when looking closer at the best basic economy tickets .

Tied for third with Southwest in in-flight experience .

Tied for last place in most pet-friendly airlines .

You can earn miles when you fly on United or its partner airlines, by using a United Airlines credit card and by shopping and dining with partners.

MileagePlus miles can be redeemed for award flights and many other uses, though none of which are as fruitful.

Earn MileagePlus miles when you fly

united airlines trip

The miles total you'll earn for a flight depends on how much you spent on the ticket and your status level within the MileagePlus program. All statuses above basic membership earn mile bonuses.

For example, the basic member rewards rate is 5 miles per dollar. But at Premier Silver level, you earn a 40% bonus, which turns your rate into 7 miles per dollar. We'll have more on status levels below — or you can jump ahead to that part now .

NOTE: You earn miles only on airfare and airline fees. Government-imposed taxes and fees do not earn miles. Generally, the most you can earn on a ticket is 75,000 miles.

Earning on other airlines: When the ticket is issued by United (ticket number starting with 016), you’ll earn miles based on the cost of the fare. But if your ticket is booked through one of United’s partners, miles are awarded based on a calculation involving the price and class of the ticket and the flight distance.

MileagePlus miles are redeemable for flights on United Airlines, on Star Alliance airlines and on United’s independent airline partners. Star Alliance has 26 member airlines and United has partnerships with 14 airlines. All of this means that you can use United miles to fly on 39 airlines, creating many opportunities for traveling the world.

MileagePlus members can pay for domestic United flights using a combination of miles and cash, called Money + Miles. You'll earn miles on the cash portion of the payment, excluding taxes and fees.

United has a user-friendly search engine, which means that In most cases, you can redeem miles directly on United’s website. Choose a flight, and you'll see what the price is in cash as well as miles.

United award tickets

United offers several levels of award seats, requiring more miles for more desirable seats and cabins. Flights can be booked as one-way tickets or round trips, and there is no benefit of booking a round-trip ticket.

Generally, there are two kinds of award redemptions:

Saver Awards seats are cheaper in terms of miles required to book them — ranging from 5,000 to 12,500 miles for domestic economy, for example. But they are scarcer and might not be available for the flight you want.

Everyday Awards seats are more available than Saver Awards seats but require more miles. Flyers with elite status, which United calls Premier, and eligible holders of MileagePlus credit cards have unrestricted access to book seats — even the last seat on the plane — at the Everyday Awards level.

United discontinued its published award chart for flights on Nov. 15, 2019, and does not have a set amount of miles required for each flight anymore. You can generally expect that prices that are cheaper with cash will also be cheaper with miles. It’s always best to compare the cost of each before booking.

Note that if you pay for a flight with miles, you don’t earn frequent-flyer miles for that flight.

Good redemption options

Free flights. Because we value MileagePlus miles at an average of 1.2 cents each, redemptions that give you at least that much value are a decent option. For example, break-even would be a flight that costs $480 or 40,000 miles (40,000 miles x .012 per mile). If you can book a $480 flight for 25,000 miles, that’s a better use of miles (1.9 cents per mile). United has many opportunities for sweet spot redemptions .

Upgrades. Upgrading your seat to a premium class can be another good use of miles because doing so can return a value greater than 1.2 cents per mile. Some upgrades to business or first class require payment in the form of a cash co-pay as well as miles. As with award seats, upgrades are based on one-way flights. The price of an upgrade depends on the fare class of your current ticket — upgrading from a cheaper fare will generally cost more.

Bad redemption options

Generally, redemptions at a value lower than 1.2 cents per mile aren’t good. Other redemption options include United Club membership fees, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and gift cards. These options tend to offer a lower value than 1.2 cents per mile, so we recommend avoiding them.

Anyone can sign up for the MileagePlus program. It's free to join. With basic membership, though, pretty much all you get is a frequent-flyer number and an account where your points accumulate.

The real goodies come when you fly or spend enough to earn United Airlines elite status. There are four levels of United MileagePlus elite status, which are (in order from lowest to highest):

Here’s what each level entails, and what it takes to get there:

MileagePlus elite levels and benefits

On United, elite statuses are called Premier levels.

With Premier statuses, you’ll qualify for mileage bonuses, seat upgrades, priority check-in, complimentary checked baggage , better award-seat availability, discounted and waived fees and other benefits. And if you get Gold status or better, you’ll also have lounge access when traveling internationally. Here’s a full list of all the perks you’ll receive at each level.

Note that some of the most valuable elite status perks are available through some of the airline’s co-branded credit cards. They include free checked bags, priority boarding, better access to award seats and even United Club airport lounge access.

How to get elite status on United

To earn MileagePlus Premier elite status, you need to do things the airline cares about as a business: fly often, fly far and spend money. This will earn you a combination of Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs).

PQPs are earned on the base fare, carrier surcharges, economy plus seats or subscriptions, preferred seat purchases, upgrade award co-pays, paid upgrades and flights ticketed and operated by Star Alliance partners.

A PQF is one flight. Each segment flown (except basic economy) will count as one PQF. Flights taken in basic economy will not earn any PQFs.

» Learn more: Guide to United Airlines Premier elite status

You don’t need to track all this math yourself; United does that and displays it in your online MileagePlus account. But the chart below shows how it works. United, like other airlines, labels fare classes with letter codes. For example, F is first class, Y is full-fare economy and N is basic economy. Your fare class for each flight segment is displayed during booking and when viewing a ticketed itinerary on united.com.

PQPs and PQFs are all credited to the person flying, not the person paying for the tickets. And if you used frequent flyer miles to pay for a flight, you won’t earn any PQPs or PQFs.

United elite status requirements

To become an elite member, you need a specific number of PQFs and PQPs or PQPs only. Here are the requirements to earn status in 2024:

Since United can’t determine how much money you spend on flights with Star Alliance partners, if you choose to earn United miles on those flights, PQPs will be earned based on an airline’s designation as a “Preferred” or “MileagePlus” partner :

Earning Premier status is based on flying and spending during the previous calendar year. Once you qualify for a Premier status, it is valid from the date you qualified through the end of the following program year. So, it could last more than 12 months. For example, if you qualify for Premier Silver status in June 2024, you’ll keep your status through Jan. 31, 2026.

You can request a United status match up to United Premier Platinum for 120 days.

The United Airlines website identifies these as its partner airlines.

Basic Economy .

All United fare classes (aside from basic economy) allow you to pick your own seat. Here’s your ultimate guide to selecting seats on United .

On United, your free baggage allowance depends on factors including your elite status, whether you paid with a United credit card, your route and the fare type you’ve purchased.

Typically, economy class passengers on domestic flights owe $40 (or $35 if prepaid) for the first checked bag and $50 ($45 if prepaid) for the second checked bag on domestic flights. Business and first class passengers typically receive up to two checked bags free of charge.

» Learn more: United Airlines bag fees: How they work and how to avoid them

These two types of fees can affect your trip, so it's best to know what you can expect to pay ahead of time if plans change.

If you need to change or cancel a United flight

If you need to cancel a United flight , terms vary by the type of airfare you bought. Most United tickets are technically nonrefundable, but there’s an exception if the cancellation request is made within 24 hours of booking.

Some tickets are refundable, but you may need to pay a cancellation fee.

With most United nonrefundable tickets (except basic economy), there’s also a silver lining: Typically, you can apply the value of your ticket toward the price of a new ticket. If you cancel your nonrefundable ticket, you'll receive United travel funds that you can apply toward a new reservation. Flight credits expire a year after the original issue date of the ticket, and you can find travel funds in your United account's Wallet.

If United cancels your flight (or just delays it)

If the canceled flight was United’s choice, not yours, you have more options. You’re entitled to a full refund on flights canceled by United , regardless of fare class, if you choose to not take another flight when the airline cancels. If you still need to get to your destination, United will accommodate you on another departing flight at no additional cost — even if the cash fare is more expensive.

If you opt not to fly and want a refund, contact United customer service by calling the airline at 800-864-8331.

If your flight is canceled, you can rebook on United's website or app by choosing an alternate flight or sometimes another departure or arrival airport other than your original one.

If your United flight is delayed , you’re not necessarily entitled to compensation ; it depends on the situation. Sometimes United will cover a hotel room night (or at least a discount). It also doesn’t hurt to ask to join the standby list of other flights or to switch to another flight to another nearby airport, as United will typically accommodate such requests for no additional charge.

The simplest way to redeem United miles is to use them for award flights on United and its partner airlines. You will need to log in to your United MileagePlus account to search for available flights. Other ways to use United miles include: flight upgrades, hotel bookings, shopping and gift cards.

No, you cannot transfer your United miles to other airlines. However, you can use your United miles to book flights on partner and Star Alliance airlines.

United no longer has an award chart and instead uses dynamic pricing, so the price of an award ticket fluctuates based on the date of travel and the airline. To see a list of the lowest award fares, check out United’s flight award deals to various destinations for as low as 5,000 miles.

United has a Money + Miles payment option, giving flyers the ability to pay for domestic United flights using a combination of miles and cash. If you’re short on miles when paying for an award ticket, choose the Money + Miles option when submitting your payment info and designate the amount of miles you want to use. The remaining amount can be paid for in cash, which will also earn miles.

NerdWallet values United miles at 1.2 cents each, which means that 10,000 United miles are worth $120. Although there is no hard and fast rule that applies in every instance, generally it makes sense to use your miles when you can extract a value greater than 1.2 cents from each mile. So, if a flight costs 10,000 miles or $50, you’d be better off paying cash. However, if that same 10,000-mile flight costs $200, it would be preferable to use your miles.

It's free to join United’s MileagePlus loyalty program. All you need to do is head over to United’s website and sign up for an account.

Tips on booking cheap flights.

Looking for the best time to buy airline tickets to get a cheap flight to everywhere? We’ve got you covered anytime, anywhere. Here’s how to find the best deal for flight booking no matter where you want to go in the world.

Which day of the week is the best day to buy cheap airline tickets?

For both U.S. domestic and international travel, Sundays can be cheaper for airline ticket purchases. Fridays tend to be the most expensive day to book a flight. Booking on the right day of the week could save you up to 6% on your airfare, according to historical data*.

When is the best time to buy airline tickets?

Based on 2020 And 2021 global flight data for Economy tickets, prices usually start to increase 56 days before departure for domestic flights. When traveling internationally, prices usually start to increase 21 days before departure*. Keep in mind that this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule; keeping an eye on prices is a good idea when trying to find the best airfare deals. Compare fares across different airlines, and set up a price alert for your preferred route.

Which are the cheapest days to fly?

Analysis of domestic and international airfare prices shows that flying out on Fridays can be cheaper. Many travelers start their trips on Sundays, so your chances of a lower price are better when departing early in the week instead. Starting your trip on a Friday could be almost 11% cheaper than air travel on Sundays, so book flights online wisely*!

Which is the cheapest month to fly?

The cheapest month to fly can vary depending on where you’re going, so finding the best rates largely comes down to avoiding peak travel times for your destination. If you’re looking for cheap international flights , the most expensive month tends to be February, while the cheapest is November with cheap flights in November offering potential savings of up to 34.6% relative to February. Cheap domestic flights work a bit differently, with March being the most expensive and August being the least expensive with cheap flights in August offering savings of up to 35%*.

How can I get cheap last-minute flight deals?

The historical data analysis of flight pricing patterns shows that you can still find amazing airfare deals 3 weeks prior to departure* when traveling domestically. International last-minute flights offer great deals 2 weeks prior to departure if you’re flying premium, but economy travelers may want to strive for no less than 4 weeks out*. Whether you’re planning a quick business trip or a spontaneous holiday with friends, you’ll have your choice of last-minute flights, roundtrip, or multicity flights on Expedia. Additionally, travelers may alter their search for round-trip flights, one-way flights, and multicity flights.

What should I look out for when booking flights?

Several factors go into any flight booking, and you’ll need to keep an eye out for them all to ensure that you get the travel time, luggage policy, airline, and class you want. Consider which airport is closest to your ultimate destination (travelers to Los Angeles may prefer flights to LAX over flights to PSP , and make sure that the flight will accommodate all the luggage you plan on bringing. Additionally, consider the different flight classes including economy flights for functionality and premium flights if you want to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

Where’s the cheapest place to travel?

The cheapest place to travel can be in the same country, like Chicago. Flights to Chicago are fairly affordable no matter where you’re coming from in the continental United States. Flights to Las Vegas tend to be pretty affordable as well. While the Vegas airport isn’t a hub for any major airline, it does have plenty of competition to keep prices relatively low.

Where can I fly for cheap?

Staying within a strict budget still allows you to find plenty of cheap flights, even to destinations like Puerto Rico. In fact, flights to Puerto Rico don’t even require U.S. citizens to have a passport. Flights to Alberta and other destinations in Canada can be fairly affordable as well.

Is it cheaper to buy flights last minute?

Flight tickets can be cheaper at the last minute depending on how late you’re actually booking, where you’re going, and the kind of flight you opt for. For domestic flights with Economy tickets, prices usually start to increase 3 weeks before departure, and 4 weeks for international flights, according to historical data*.

Are fully refundable flights available?

Yes, several fully refundable flights are available and will be labeled as such right on your search results page in green text. Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Someone reportedly recorded sitting in United Airlines airplane cockpit during Colorado Rockies team trip

By Jack Lowenstein

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 10:52 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

The FAA and United Airlines are both investigating the report of someone other than a pilot sitting inside the cockpit of an airplane during a recent Colorado Rockies team flight. The Wall Street journal originally posted an article about this investigation.

CBS News Colorado reached out to United Airlines on Thursday night to confirm there was an April 10 team flight to Toronto that is under investigation. The airline shared a statement and confirmed the pilots on that aircraft will not make further flights for United during this investigation.

United Airlines statement

We're deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged. As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we've reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation.

It was unknown who was seen in the recording of someone sitting in the cockpit of the flight. WSJ reports it has been deleted since originally being posted online.

CBS Colorado also reached out to the FAA and the Major League Baseball team, but did not receive a response on Thursday night.

Flying With Dogs or Cats? These Are Airlines’ Pet Policies

American recently relaxed its rules for pets traveling inside the cabin with their owners. Here’s what the major U.S. airlines require to travel with a pet.

A black lab rests his head on his owner’s foot in an airplane. He is partway under the seat in front of him. The owner’s leg and jeans and a brown shoe are visible.

By Jesus Jiménez

Flying with a pet can be expensive and confusing, with fees, weight limits, carrier size rules and the need to make sure there’s no loud barking (or meowing) on board.

Recently, American Airlines relaxed its pet policy to allow passengers to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet in a carrier, and more private flight options have been emerging in recent years for pet owners who can afford them.

Still, flying with large or medium-size dogs can be tricky, and many travelers are wary of leaving a pet in the plane’s cargo hold.

For those traveling on the major carriers with their pets as carry-ons, here’s what to know about each major domestic airline’s policy.

Southwest Airlines

On Southwest, a Dallas-based carrier, two checked bags can fly at no cost, but not pets. Southwest charges $125 per pet carrier on its flights.

Dogs or cats are allowed to travel below a seat in an approved carrier — up to 18.5 inches long by 8.5 inches high and 13.5 inches wide — according to the airline .

Southwest has a few caveats for those traveling with pets: The pet must stay in its carrier during the flight, and the carrier is considered a personal item or carry-on bag.

Up to six pets are allowed on Southwest flights. Once six pets are booked onto a flight, no further customers may add a pet companion to their booking.

United Airlines

United Airlines has no weight or breed restrictions for cats and dogs as long as they are in an approved hard or soft-sided carrier, measuring 17.5 inches long by 9 inches tall and 12 inches wide for a hard carrier, or 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide for a soft carrier.

United charges $125 each way for travel with pets. There is no fee for service animals on United flights, but some forms are required before the flight.

The carrier must fit under a seat, and where a passenger is allowed to sit can vary according to the type of aircraft. For example, people traveling with pets cannot sit in emergency rows. If you’re traveling with two pets (the maximum allotted), you are required to book two seats.

Delta Air Lines

Small dogs and cats can travel on Delta Air Lines flights as long as they can fit inside a carrier stored below the seat. The size of the carrier depends on the aircraft, but in general the airline recommends a soft-sided carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and small enough to have some room to move around in the carrier, which must have ventilation openings on three sides.

Delta charges $95 for pets traveling as carry-on companions, and the passenger can bring only one personal item along with the pet. Certain seats cannot be booked for travel with an animal, such as those in an emergency exit row.

American Airlines

American Airlines allows cats and dogs to travel in a carry-on container, which must remain under the seat in front of the pet owner throughout the flight. The airline recommends a soft-sided carrier that measures 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

The fee for a carry-on pet on a domestic American Airlines flight is $150.

Flights are limited to seven carry-on pets, not including service animals, and American Eagle flights are limited to five carry-on pets, with one in first class. There is no charge for service animals flying on American flight, but the airline requires forms to be filled out in advance.

The airline said in a statement that it had recently changed its cabin pet policy to allow customers with a pet to also bring either a personal item or carry-on bag stowed in the overhead bin (but not both).

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” the airline said.

Spirit, JetBlue, Frontier and Alaska

Spirit allows dogs and cats on its flights in a carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall for a fee of $125. The weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 40 pounds, according to the airline .

Small dogs and cats can fly on JetBlue for fee of $125 each way , in an approved carrier. Up to six pets are allowed on JetBlue flights.

Frontier allows pets on board for a $99 fee each way, as long the pet fits in a carrier. Passengers can have only a personal item or carry-on in addition to their pet carrier.

Pets can travel in a carrier on Alaska Airlines flights for a fee of $100 each way. A passenger can travel with a pet carrier and a personal item, or a carrier and a carry-on bag.

Private or charter flights

Those who take their pets on private or charter flights, which can cost many thousands of dollars, have much more leeway. Dogs that weigh less than 150 pounds can sit on seats.

BarkAir, a charter operator tailored specifically for those flying with dogs, charges about $6,000 for a dog and its owner to travel, with flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and London. Carriers are not required, and dogs can sit on laps, seats or beds.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
