Pittsburgh offers Pitt students many opportunities to enjoy and benefit from its lively downtown, growing economy, and distinctive neighborhoods—including Oakland, the Pittsburgh campus's home neighborhood and the city's cultural and educational hub. By presenting a current Pitt ID, students can ride all public transportation in Allegheny County free of charge.

Truly, the city is an extension of campus.

The University’s PITT ARTS program enables students to attend cultural events at venues like downtown's Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts for free or at greatly reduced rates. At Heinz Field on Pittsburgh's burgeoning North Shore, students can cheer themselves hoarse during Pitt Panthers home football games (the Pittsburgh Steelers play there, too). The city's South Side and Lawrenceville neighborhoods, with their many cafés, clubs, galleries, eateries, and shops, also are popular with students from Pitt and the city's six other universities.

Available Dates: TBD

Admitted Student Day

Did anyone else attend Pitt’s Admitted Student Day on Monday? I did and frankly, the tours were good but I found the presentations very underwhelming (especially the Dietrich one). All of us had already been admitted so this was the school’s opportunity to really fire everyone up about Pitt and I thought it fell flat. They have to have the ability to put together compelling and exciting videos about the school, Pittsburgh and its opportunities. Plus informative videos about student life. And they didn’t.

I’m torn between Pitt and another school (which did go all out on its open house day) and I’m really bummed because I thought the day might put Pitt on top. I LOVE Pittsburgh (especially the Penguins) and always imagined living there for 4 years (getting discounted tix to hockey games) but that isn’t enough to get me to the school. And I don’t feel like I have a much better idea now of what Pitt will provide than what I knew before.

If admissions is reading this, maybe work with the Film and Media department to put together something much more exciting. Or hire a consultant.

Am I alone in this opinion?

I totally agree. It was disappointing. I was hoping for a little more excitement but it was very flat. Nothing that really said - We Want You!

The Blue and Gold days Pitt offers in the summer is the tour that sells Pitt and the City. It was the best College tour of all the tours we took. It is an all day 7:00 to 3:00 it has buses with student tour guides that take you into the city and upper campus. There are so many choices you can’t do it all but you make it the tour that is best for you/student.

Does anyone know where “Personalized Pitt” visits fit into the equation? Is that in lieu of going to an admitted student day? After being admitted, my son received emails encouraging him to schedule a Personalized Pitt visit, which he has done but the date isn’t until January. I’m not sure if every admitted student receives the offer or if it is limited and based on something else (e.g., certain majors, geography, test scores, financial need (travel is reimbursed)???). Anyone have any intel about the Personalized Pitt program? Thanks!

I thought the 3 student-led tours were good–Heart of Campus, Pittsburgh and Upper Campus. But those are so dependent on your tour guide that it is hard to say that they are better or worse than other school tours. The presentations were not good.

I have not received anything about a Personalized Pitt visit, so that must only go to certain students.

This is so disappointing to read. D20 was accepted and we are planning to attend ASD in February. She’s never seen the campus! And it’s one of her top choices so we’re hoping for a great experience there.

Does anyone know how to arrange an overnight stay with current Pitt students, and whether that is a common thing to do there?

:frowning:

We didn’t go to an admitted student day because my D couldn’t find a date that worked for her but I thought you could set up a visit with the major department and sit in on classes if you were interested.

I would think that would give you more information about bring a student there than just a presentation.

Some students and parents visit Pitt on accepted student day for the first time so that’s probably why they have presentations and tours.

I don’t think there is an overnight stay option.

@TimeFlies2 Please let us know how the Admitted Student Day visit goes! We are trying to get D20 (ideally with one or both parents who have never seen the campus!) but the calendar is challenging…

@Itisatruth I’ll be happy to report back. Our whole family is now going because S20 was accepted too. It’s one of the very few schools that both my kids (twins) applied to. He sent in an application after D20’s acceptance because we are all so high on Pitt at the moment. Gotta love rolling admissions.

I really hope we like it…

We are also heading with D to Admitted Student Day this Monday (President’s Day). Will report back as well. Curious if it will be as impressive as the Blue and Gold Day was in summer! Went to Admitted Student Day at PSU last week. It was nothing to write home about.

We decided to take a 4 day weekend for a family vacation to Pittsburgh to check out the city. The Aviary is not to be missed and we really enjoyed the botanical gardens. The museums are impressive and we couldn’t do half of what was on our list. The Carnegie dinos and gems are incredible and are very near the Cathedral of Learning. We explored the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh and enjoyed a ton of great food. This is definitely a foodie city.

Monday we had admitted student day. We learned quite a bit about the Pitt engineering program and all that it has to offer. We are really impressed by the study abroad options for engineers as this is important for our D. We learned more about the Co-op program for Pitt which certainly seems to be a strength for them. We enjoyed the bus tour of the city but it seemed a bit rushed. They said there was construction so we couldn’t do some of what they would normally do, but it seemed like they could have pointed out more about the culture of Pittsburgh.

But all in all a successful weekend!

I’m glad you enjoyed your visit. Pitt students can get free admission to the museums and bus pass.

So we did the Admitted Student Day on Presidents Day. Stayed overnight at the Wyndham Pitt University Center - basically right on campus and very convenient. Would recommend except does not have free breakfast if that is important to you. There is a restaurant, but the food is pricey. Did dinner Sunday night at the Union Grill on S. Craig St (a couple of blocks over toward Carnegie Mellon’s campus). Highly recommend - casual, very busy place with interesting bar menu (I had a burger with a pierogi on top) and $4 drafts. Reasonable prices and friendly service. We did Primanti Bros. during our B&G visit, which is also fun.

Next morning walked out of the hotel right into the building behind it (Alumni Hall) for light breakfast - coffee/tea, juice, pastries, cookies. Welcome session for Dietrich was put on by Marc Harding, Vice Provost of Admissions. Saw him at Blue and Gold Day, but if you haven’t, he is very entertaining. Presentation was very similar to B&G, but with more emphasis thrown in on why choose Pitt.

Academic sessions followed, and we went to the College of Business presentation since D would likely transfer from Dietrich, which is pretty common to our understanding. Presentation seemed much more in-depth than the B&G one, as they went through the advisory process and highlighted study abroad, internships, the career services and outcomes, in addition to the curriculum. Found the presentations very informative, and there was ample time for one-on-one questions with the presenters and students at the snack break and after the presentation.

Lunch was at Market Central, their main dining hall. Much more crowded than our summer B&G Day, mostly because school is in full swing and lots of students were eating there. Food was good with many options, but since so crowded there was a problem with them running out of forks and longer lines for some foods.

After lunch we did the upper campus tour since we did the Heart of Campus Tour and Discover Pittsburgh Bus Tour at B&G. There were other events we did not attend - a Life on Campus presentation, Pitt Opportunities Fair, and some department open houses not related to D’s interests. Returned to Alumni Hall for a free T-shirt (different from the B&G), and they had a section set up for students ready to commit with cheerleaders and confetti cannons. D did not commit since still waiting for three RD schools’ decisions. There was time for another tour, but we left campus at 2 to begin our 4.5 hour drive back home to eastern PA.

To sum up - if you have already attended a Blue and Gold Day, this will feel very similar in structure, and I would not recommend doing again if cost/travel/time is a real issue. There was nothing that particularly “wowed” us, or left us feeling we should commit before we left, but that’s probably just Pitt’s style. They’re kind of low-key, but incredibly efficient and competent. And truth-be-told, I haven’t found a Pitt student yet who doesn’t love it there. So, if you have never visited campus, or just need a second look, I feel it would be worth going to the Admitted Student Day visit. We already had a great impression of Pitt from our first visit, and this surely served to reinforce our impression. It also gave us the opportunity to see things there wasn’t time for first time around, to get more information and ask more specific questions about things we hadn’t thought of the before, and for D to get a different feel for the campus in full-session winter as compared to the quieter summer B&G Day. We were glad we did it, and Pitt is still up there in D’s top 3 choices.

Best of luck to all with your ultimate decisions!

Thanks, @Yocco2 that’s a super helpful write-up. D20 has signed up for the Honors visit day on March 27 and I think DH will be able to go with her. (I will be out of the country unless, you know, COVID-19).

Question for you or anyone: Does the Wyndham allow prospective students <18 yo to check in/stay unaccompanied? Does it help If the student has parental permission letter and room is prepaid?

@Itisatruth I am not sure how they would handle that situation - you would probably need to call the hotel directly.

@Yocco2 Nice summary!! Our DD didn’t commit yet either. She has a couple of other dream schools she needs to hear from. But of the options she has today Pitt is at the top of the list. She loves their engineering department and we really enjoyed the time in Pittsburgh. She also has said from the start that she wants to go to college in a metropolitan area and Pitt definitely meets that requirement! Can I ask where in PA you are? We are also 4.5 hours east of Pittsburgh.

@Susanb33 Yes, Pitt is at the top of her list of D’s current acceptances as well. She was also accepted at PSU, but not overly sold on it. We are in the Lehigh Valley/Allentown area. You?

@Itisatruth I know the Hampton Inn let my D stay when she was under 21 (>18 though), I called and reserved her room and made sure she could stay there. Find out if they have a free shuttle to Pitt.

Mention Pitt for a discount.

https://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/pennsylvania/hampton-inn-pittsburgh-university-medical-center-PITOKHX/about/amenities.html

Well, my husband’s travel plans for late March just got canceled (thanks, coronavirus!) so he can definitely take D20 to Pitt Honors Day on 3/27 — assuming they still hold it!!

What are the admission requirements for the Honors curriculum option?

For the curriculum option, prospective students may apply to Nursing Honors through the regular initial University of Pittsburgh application process. If you choose to apply, you will be asked to answer the following essay question: (1) If you could change anything in the world, what would it be? (2) Explain why and how you would change it. Responses should be stated in 500 words or fewer. These essays will be reviewed by University Admissions Office who make admission decisions at this point. If you are already a freshman or sophomore in the BSN program and you are interested in the Honors curriculum option, Pitt's David C. Frederick Honors College still admits a limited number of upperclassmen into its degree program. Interested upperclassmen must have a minimum GPA of 3.50, and must have completed a minimum of 2 semesters (24 credits). Students are required to complete the same essay prompts above and submit a letter of recommendation from an instructor or academic advisor. Applications for upperclassmen students are reviewed once a year with an application deadline of May 31.

What are the admission requirements for the Honors thesis option?

Students interested in the thesis option can apply directly to the Frederick Honors College at any time during their BSN curriculum. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.50 and are required to identify a research mentor and submit a brief research proposal and plan of study to the Frederick Honors College in collaboration with the mentor. More details are provided below and you can learn more here.

How competitive is the admission to the Nursing Honors program?

Our nursing students are top-notch, and with enough passion and dedication, any student could successfully complete an Honors thesis (the highest undergraduate distinction). However, typically 2¬ to 5 nursing students complete a BPhil (Honors thesis) every year. You will find a list of recently completed undergraduate honors theses here. The Nursing Honors curriculum option is a fairly new pathway, and the Class of 2023 will be the first cohort. Based on number and quality of applications, the Frederick Honors College admitted around 14 to 18 nursing students in this option annually in the last 2 years.

Beyond academics: Finding your campus community

  • by Isabella Beristain
  • April 30, 2024

Three students laughing and hanging out while playing Lotería in one of the Cross Cultural Center’s many common areas.

Your time at college should encompass more than just your academic experience. Woah, bold statement alert! Is an actual university admissions blog telling you that college isn’t all about academics?

Don't just take my word for it — hear from our experts!

“A campus community fosters a sense of belonging, encourages personal growth, and enriches the academic experience through collaboration.

When you begin your journey, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Explore clubs and organizations, attend campus events, take advantage of student resources and say yes to new opportunities that come your way – especially if they’re daunting and unfamiliar.

You might just make lifelong friends or meet mentors that will not only shape your time at university, but also influence your future endeavors beyond graduation.”

— J oelle Suh, recruitment coordinator, UC Davis Undergraduate Admissions

While classes and academic pursuits play a large role (I’ll go as far as to say the starring role) in one’s college journey, other aspects are just as important to take into consideration when deciding on which university you want to attend. University is a time for self-exploration, enriching adventures and saying yes to new possibilities at every turn. Building community and finding a place where you feel you belong will make your overall experience much more enjoyable. You might even create a new place to call home.

But how do you get a feel for a university’s community before going there? You’re already on the right track if you’re asking this question!

Search student organizations and clubs

College is unique to high school or even community college for the sheer number of clubs and student organizations that you can take part in. Most universities have a dedicated webpage where you can explore the lengthy catalog of clubs and organizations available. At UC Davis, students have over 800 clubs to explore including Greek life, the Arabic Language Club, the Finance and Investment Club, Davis Ballroom Dance, the Health Equity and Social Justice Club and the Nintendo Club at UC Davis, to name a few. Spend time looking into clubs and organizations that align with your current passions or search new opportunities that pique your interest and spark your curiosity!

Look for student resources on campus

Draft Horse and Driving club teams pose for a holiday photo shoot on the quad.

Entering a new place is sometimes daunting but luckily a lot of universities offer on-campus support. These are places that will help guide you through your collegiate journey. When searching online or asking college representatives, look to see how the institution enhances your overall experience and contributes to student success. UC Davis’ Community Resource and Retention Centers webpage showcases all the resources that students have to get the support they need to thrive at UC Davis.

Community centers are also great places to create community and find belonging. Joseph Martinez, who leads the UC Davis Cross Cultural Center , wants students to know that support organizations exist and help make a campus feel welcoming.

“Academics get tough, so when we know we have a community of support that’s when we feel we belong,” Martinez said. “I can go into an area and share space with people who have similar experiences to me. When you find that, university feels like home.”

Field trip: Civil Engineering students tour CTDOT lab

university of pittsburgh admitted students tour

WATCH: Ready to Go Baby Go

A group of Civil Engineering students and Dr. Bin Zhou recently visited the Connecticut Department of Transportation Material Evaluation and Specification Unit in Rocky Hill. Students learned about the functions of the facility and visited asphalt labs, a concrete testing lab, and an aggregate lab. The trip provided a great learning opportunity for students to connect what they learned in a classroom and what professionals are doing in the construction and maintenance of the state transportation system.

On April 28, the Class of 2024 joined the ranks of University of Pittsburgh alumni as they crossed the stage to collect their diplomas.

Alison Linares Mendoza , who earned her degree in industrial engineering on Sunday, served as undergraduate speaker for the ceremony. “If there’s one feeling I’m sure we all share, it would be appreciation,” said Linares Mendoza, who will move to Colorado after graduation to work on NASA’s Artemis V mission. “Thank you to the University of Pittsburgh, and all those who came before us, for making this place feel like we belong.”

The University conferred an honorary degree upon John Surma, former CEO of United States Steel Corporation and Pitt Board of Trustees member, for his contributions to Pitt and the community. The business leader also delivered an address to the graduates on collaboration and Pitt’s impact in the region.

After the last piece of confetti fell and the last “Let’s go, Pitt” rang out from the Petersen Events Center, the graduates headed into the warm spring day to celebrate with their peers, family and friends.

Working to Make People Smile: Devona Williams

Devona Williams

After pursing other career paths in health care, Devona Williams decided that becoming a dental hygienist was the right fit for her. But when looking at programs around her hometown of Pittsburgh, she found that they didn’t match her needs.

“My options were limited there. The University of Pittsburgh was too expensive, and the community college was outside of the city, and I’m a city girl,” she said.

Devona looked to Philadelphia, where she has family, and found the College’s Dental Hygiene program. She worked for one year as a dental assistant, where she received on-the-job training, while waiting to get into the program.

“As a dental assistant, I didn’t receive a lot of background. I didn’t feel comfortable with that,” she said.

Devona enrolled at the College in fall 2021, taking her first two classes online, before moving and attending classes in person.

“When I was working as a dental assistant, my back hurt because I didn’t know that there is a proper posture for working around a patient. There is a science behind it for your well-being, and what’s best for the patient,” she said.

For Devona, the highlight of the program was the outreach to residents, a part of their student training.

“It’s all about the community clinic. I love working in the clinic because all we see is patients who need dental treatment. They don’t have the option to rely upon insurance. They go years without treatment,” she said.

Preparing to take her written and clinical certification exams in June, Devona may return to Pittsburgh in the future, but plans to work in Philadelphia for a few years.

“I’ve met some amazing people here, I’ve made some good friends, and I’ve enjoyed my time here. The city is beautiful,” said Devona.

Her in-demand degree and certification will allow her to work throughout Pennsylvania and has given her the knowledge and confidence to care for others.

“I think the program prepared me really well. It helped shape me into a better clinician. You see people from different walks of life, and you understand why you’re doing what you do. The Dental Hygiene faculty are excellent at helping you grasp concepts and apply them in real life. The program may seem like a lot initially, but it is very rewarding.

If you’re invested and your heart is in it, just jump in. It’s worth it,” said Devona.
