The Best Things to Do, See, and Eat in Cleveland, Ohio

Your guide to visiting "The Rock 'n' Roll Capital of the World."

visit cleveland ohio

Set along America's Rust Belt, Cleveland is a former manufacturing capital turned bustling culinary and arts hub. Curious visitors have been increasingly drawn to this underrated urban destination. Not only is it affordable, but also there are plenty of fun things to do in Cleveland. World-class dining, craft beer, arts, and culture — it's all here, and for a fraction of the cost you'd find in bigger cities like New York City or San Francisco.

Where Is Cleveland, Ohio?

On a first visit to Cleveland, many travelers are surprised to discover it's a waterfront city with beaches and sailing. After all, Cleveland saddles right up to the shore of Lake Erie, and in warmer months you'll find locals sunning on their own blissful stretch of coastline. You can drive northeast to Niagara Falls (about four hours), or head to nearby Sandusky to rent a boat and explore the famous Lake Erie Islands.

Cleveland's Top Attractions

Considered by many the city's number one point of interest, the Cleveland Museum of Art is hard to beat. Located in museum-filled University Circle , it deserves an entire afternoon spent wandering through its frequently rotating exhibits (Alex Katz, Rodin, Yayoi Kusama); plus, admission is free.

Meanwhile, the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tells the stories of rock legends, living and dead, while also scheduling frequent film screenings and live concerts. Visitors should also catch a Guardians game at the 35,000-seat, wonderfully modern Progressive Field stadium, which has a glass-enclosed restaurant.

What about if yours is a family of daredevils? Drive an hour west to reach Cedar Point , which boasts 17 roller coasters, including the terrifying Magnum XL-200. Once your stomach has been sufficiently flopped, grab lunch on Cedar Point Beach and watch the boats go by.

Best Beaches in Cleveland

The Lake Erie shoreline is dotted with laid-back, sandy beaches that are as delightful as anything you'd find on the East Coast.

Start with Huntington Reservation , a beautiful coastal hideout that's part of Cleveland Metroparks. When you're not leaping over the blue-green waves, you can sprawl out on the sand, go fishing on the breakwall, or have a picnic.

Meanwhile, Edgewater is a more convenient spot for those not looking to venture far from the city. Three miles from downtown, the resort-like park (a portion of which is dog-friendly) has cabanas, beach volleyball, and quite a few concession stands for when those ice cream cravings set in.

Major Events and Festivals

Local cultural events and festivals include the Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art , as well as the Cleveland International Film Festival (March 22 to April 1 in 2023), which showcases over 200 different features by emerging filmmakers from all over the world.

There's WonderStruck in July, which features a weekend-long lineup of music, arts, activities, and delicious culinary offerings. Meanwhile, the Asian Lantern Festival lights up the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and includes a food market.

Fireworks aren't just a tradition in Cleveland — they're a citywide event. With access to a sprawling coastline along Lake Erie, the light show is truly dazzling every July 4th, with Jacobs Pavilion , Superior Viaduct, and Edgewater Beach ranking among locals' favorite spots to see the colorful explosions reflecting over the water.

Shopping in Cleveland

Once home to the city's manufacturing jobs, the newly revitalized Gordon Square area has become a popular residential and commercial arts district, centered around the corner of 65th and Detroit Avenue. Prominent performing arts venues like Cleveland Public Theatre and the Near West Theatre make it a good option for couples seeking a cultured evening out.

During the day, visitors can do serious retail damage at places like Fount , where highly skilled artisans churn out handsome purses, clutches, totes, and backpacks in rich, high-quality leather. For a selection of delicate, handmade jewelry from French designer Anne Harrill, head to Océanne . Shop pendant necklaces, artsy earrings, and cuff bracelets along with other apparel and accessories. Or, if you're looking for a more eclectic vibe, there's Himiko's Cool World . The '80s-inspired shop stocks colorful notebooks, pins, apparel, and decor with a vintage feel.

Cleveland’s Best Restaurants

While Cleveland has yet to earn the recognition of culinary hot spots like Los Angeles and New York City, it's been quietly coming into its own over the last five years. To get a sense of Cleveland's best places to eat, start at the West Side Market . The indoor market has been in operation since 1912, and is crowned with a massive 137-foot clock tower. Inside, you'll find family-owned stalls selling homemade sausage, Cambodian sticky rice, and handmade pastas, among others.

The romance at L'Albatros Brasserie + Bar starts with its converted carriage house visage and continues on the plate with French brasserie fare. Enjoy dishes like a goat cheese tart or cassoulet with a glass of Billecart-Salmon in its cozy, red brick interior. End with a crème caramel or chocolate Napoleon and a glass of port.

Meanwhile, Nano Brew Cleveland features 24 craft beers and an affordable selection of bites that include rotating chef specials and its popular 100 percent certified Angus beef burgers.

For elevated Italian classics, from calamari to osso buco to bucatini bolognese, try The Palazzo Restaurant by chef Rafael Zaloshnja on Detroit Avenue. The resto also has a delectable pizza menu with pies that come with ingredients like truffle cream, prosciutto, and fennel sausage.

Stop by Edwins for a salade niçoise, escargots, frog legs, and plenty of fromage, of course. Don't leave before ordering the beignets and a French coffee.

Best Bars in Cleveland

Ohio City, the oldest neighborhood in Cleveland, also happens to be its culinary epicenter, with dozens of chef-driven restaurants and plenty of decent bars to choose from.

One particular stretch of West 25th Street became a destination for beer-seekers with the opening of Market Gardening Brewery , a 35,000-square-foot production facility that also offers tours and a brewpub.

For something a little more refined, there's Toast , which has a serious wine list. And The Harp is Cleveland's go-to Irish pub, complete with local beers, traditional Irish fare, and live music.

Easy Day Trips from Cleveland

Half an hour south of Cleveland is Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the state's only national park. Hugging the region's main waterway, Cuyahoga Valley has forested hiking trails, sandstone cliffs, and more than 70 waterfalls. It's also one of the nation's most visited national parks. It's particularly beautiful in the fall when the forest creates a multi-colored canopy over the green river. Kayaks are available to rent, too, making this the perfect family getaway from Cleveland.

Where to Stay in Cleveland

Downtown Cleveland is packed with hotels, each offering something for every kind of budget. While waterfront views are easy enough to accommodate (the lake sits just a few blocks away), other highlights include easy access to Progressive Field baseball stadium or the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

One of Cleveland's most upscale hotel properties is the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland , where all guests have views of either downtown or Lake Erie.

If it's a boutique hotel stay you're after, book a room at either the Kimpton Schofield Hotel or the swanky Metropolitan at the 9 . Affordable hotel options can be found in and around downtown as well. Budget-conscious travelers should consider the Holiday Inn Express and the Hilton Garden Inn .

Hotels aren't the only places to stay in Cleveland, however. Visitors will discover great, cost-friendly options on sites like Airbnb , where you can find everything from a guest room in Ohio City to a historic cottage on Lake Erie.

2 Days In Cleveland Itinerary

I’ve grouped the top attractions in Cleveland geographically, so you will move logically from one part of the city to the next without wasting time. This way, you’ll have an efficient 2 day visit to Cleveland.

Day 1 in Cleveland AM:

On day 1 of your 2 day Cleveland itinerary, you’ll explore downtown Cleveland and the neighborhoods of Ohio City and Tremont.

In the morning, you can poke around attractions in the downtown and explore the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cleveland’s downtown is revitalized, very compact, and extremely walkable. If you want, you can book a 2 hour guided walking tour .

Start your day bright and early by fueling up at Restore Cold Pressed on Huron Street.

It’s a pretty cafe filled with plants and lit up by a beautiful teal green mural. You can choose from raw organic juices, açaí bowls, avocado toast, and other breakfast items.

the stunning Cleveland Arcade

2. Cleveland Arcade

Then head to the Cleveland Arcade . It’s a shopping area housed in the Hyatt Regency. It was one of the America’s first indoor shopping centers.

Built in 1890, the Arcade was modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel in Milan Italy . It was the first building in Cleveland placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are many styles of architecture, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, that converge in this decadent hall. The glass and metal atrium has a 100 foot skylight.

There are scrolling iron balconies. It’s worth walking through the two lower levels open to the public, if just to gawk.

historic 4th Street in Cleveland

3. Explore 4th Street

Just across from the Arcade is Cleveland’s bustling and pedestrianized thoroughfare, 4th Street. It’s smaller than you might expect, just a few short blocks with white bistro lights strung across the street.

The Cleveland House of Blues is located on East 4th Street. If you’re a music lover, be sure to check their events calendar. When I was last in Cleveland, there was a three block long line just to get in.

4. Heinen’s Supermarket

Heinen’s may be the world’s most beautiful supermarket. Think the colorful produce of Whole Foods, but set in a stunning building. Heinen’s is a place near and dear to Clevelanders’ hearts.

Heinen’s is housed in the Cleveland Trust Rotunda , a landmark building in Cleveland. Designed by George Brown Post, the building is an exquisite architectural space inspired by Greco-Roman temples.

It has a leaded glass ceiling and 13 stunning murals depicting the history of the region.

Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Public Square

5. Public Square

Public Square marks the center of downtown Cleveland. It’s been renovated (several times) into a more park like space.

You’ll find a statue of Cleveland’s founder, New Englander Moses Cleveland, the massive Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and a fountain. The monument is dedicated to the American Civil War. If you go inside, you’ll find four bronze relief sculptures depicting battle scenes.

Public Square is ringed with some of Cleveland’s most important buildings: Terminal Tower, Key Tower, 200 Pubic Square, and City Hall.

the giant Free Stamp sculpture

6. World’s Largest Stamp

Right near City Hall in Willard Park is Cleveland’s giant “FREE” stamp. The massive sculpture was created by husband and wife artists Claus Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.

Oldenburg is a well known Pop sculptor. Like his other works, this sculpture presents an everyday item on a massive scale. It’s meant to reverse the viewer/artwork dynamic, shrinking the spectator.

At 29 x 26 x 49 feet, the Free Stamp is the world’s biggest rubber stamp. It’s actually made of aluminum and steel and painted with polyurethane enamel. The word “FREE” is a nod to the nearby Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a must visit attraction in your 2 days in Cleveland

7. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

It’s a 15+ minute walk from Public Square to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . It’s better to walk here than drive because parking is rather scarce. The museum is pricey at $30. It’s a good idea to pre-book a ticket .

Right now, you need to reserve a time slot online. The museum is open until 9:00 pm on Thursday night.

Housed in a meandering I.M. Pei building, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is probably Cleveland’s most popular attraction. The museum traces the history of rock and roll and its greatest stars, from the early pioneers to cutting edge bands.

There is loads of memorabilia, including John Lennon’s Sargent Pepper suit and piano, Micheal Jackson’s sparkly sequined glove, Elvis Presley’s jumpsuit and a recreation of his studio, and Stevie Wonder’s harmonica. There are listening stations and various interactive exhibits too.

the Cleveland Mural, just off 25th Street

Day 1 in Cleveland PM:

1. ohio city neighborhood & lunch.

In the afternoon, head to Cleveland’s hippest neighborhood, Ohio City. It’s just across the Cuyahoga River from downtown, about a 7 drive. There’s metered parking on the streets.

The main drag is 25th Street, which is filled with shops, farm to table eateries, vegan fare, and breweries.

Ohio City is a fantastic place to take a guided food tour or craft brewery tour in Cleveland.

Or, you can start with lunch at either Avo Modern Mexican , The Flying Fig , or Town Hall . Avo is on 25th Street in a chic modern setting.

Avo Modern Mexican

One block from Avo is the amazing Cleveland street art mural, located at the corner of Chatham and West 25th Street. The vintage-y mural was created by street artists Victor Ving and Lisa Beggs.

Flying Fig is an adorable bistro off of the central Market Square. Market Square is a historic square at the corner of 25th and Lorain Streets.

For dessert, check out Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream , featuring seasonal flavors from local produce. For a craft beer, stop in at Nano Brew .

West End Market

2. West Side Market

You could also shop for your lunch at West Side Market , Cleveland’s 1912 landmark.

This is one of the best markets in the United States, with every culinary treat imaginable. You’ll almost feel like you’re in Europe.

You can find everything here — meats, cheeses, sandwiches, pastries, herbs, gelato — from over a 100 vendors. The market is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. So be sure to plan your visit accordingly.

If you want to take in the view of the entire market, head upstairs. The (not well marked) stairway is in a corner of the market at the intersection of Loraine and 25th Street.

West Side Market

The market can seem overwhelming with so many vendors. You can also book a guided food tour of the market that takes you to 15 food stalls.

3. Loraine Street

Before visiting Cleveland, I’d read that you can browse boutiques and antique shops on Loraine Street. I must confess that I was underwhelmed with Loraine Street.

But there’s one place that caught my eye, Helm Collective . This place is just loaded with adorable vintage and antique goodies.

mural in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood

4. Tremont Neighborhood

When you’re done wandering Ohio City, head to the adjacent Tremont neighborhood. It’s about a 30+ minute walk or 10 minute drive from Ohio City. You’ll find plenty of places to park on the street.

Tremont is a historic neighborhood filled with colorful ivy clad Victorian houses, tree-lined streets, and trendy boutiques, eateries, and galleries.

If you want to shop, head down Professor Street. There, you’ll find the cute boutiques Banyon Tree and Evie Lou .

After a stroll, you can relax in Lincoln Park, the green center of the neighborhood with plenty of benches and a charming gazebo.

mural at Lucky's Cafe in the Tremont neighborhood

Another Tremont attraction is the A Christmas Storyhouse . The interior is decorated to look like the set of the 1983 movie, which is now a holiday cult classic.

The house is fully interactive. You can try on stuff and even sit on a toilet or climb into a cabinet.

Tremont is an excellent place for dinner, with some of Cleveland’s best restaurants. Choose between Fahrenheit or Dante on Professor Street.

If you are visiting Tremont early in your day instead, there are two great breakfast spots: Grumpy’s Cafe (dive diner) and Lucky’s Cafe (brunch and pastries in a cool setting). At Lucky’s. I loved the “Shipwreck.”

ceramics at La Bella Vita in Little Italy

Day 2 in Cleveland Itinerary, AM:

On day 2 of your Cleveland itinerary, you’ll head east to Uptown and Little Italy.

1. Little Italy

Start your day in Cleveland’s Little Italy . You can grab breakfast at Presti’s Bakery . Fresh goodies like bread, donuts, cookies, cakes, and pastries are all made by hand.

Or, even better, take a guided food tour of Little Italy.

Little Italy is located along Mayfield Avenue and Murray Hill Road. You’ll find lots of shops and eateries.

Cobbled Murray Hill is very pretty. You’ll find Italian ceramics at La Bella Vita. Further down is the cute cafe Algebra.

Interior of the James A. Garfield Memorial located in Lake View Cemetery

2. Lake View Cemetery

From Little Italy, after you’re fueled up, detour to the Lake View Cemetery . That may sound grim, but it’s quite lovely. Established in 1869, Lake View is one of the great Victorian cemeteries in the United States.

Lake View is home to the graves of Cleveland’s movers and shakers. There are two things to be sure to see there, the Garfield Monument and the Wade Memorial Chapel .

The Garfield Monument is one of the splashiest US presidential tombs. The monument is 180 feet tall, with golden mosaics and stained glass windows inside. From the balcony, you have nice views of the Cleveland skyline. Nearby is the obelisk tomb of John D. Rockfeller.

The Wade Memorial Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in honor of Jeptha H. Wade, a businessman and philanthropist.

The chapel was designed by the architectural firm of Hubbel & Benes, a firm responsible for some of Cleveland’s most prominent landmarks downtown.

The interior was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The walls of the chapel are decorated with massive mosaic glass panels.

the courtyard of MOCA

If you’re a fan of contemporary art, you should next head to MOCA , Cleveland’s Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s just a 5-10 minute walk from Little Italy.

Honestly, it’s worth a visit just for the architecture yourself. It’s a stunner both inside and outside.

The building is a stunning glass and steel jewel, with a twisting main staircase. There’s also a nice green courtyard to stop for a rest, next to a massive 7 ton hand sculpture called Judy’s Hand .

MOCA doesn’t have a permanent collection. Instead, it is an exhibition space, housing temporary exhibits on three floors. You may see established names or a new artist’s first solo show.

entrance to the Cleveland Museum of Art, with a cast of Rodin's The Thinker

4. Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art is my favorite thing to do in Cleveland, an absolute highlight of the city.

It’s an amazing museum, not something you’d expect to find in northeast Ohio. And best of all, it’s absolutely free (except for special exhibitions).

The museum is well organized, with plenty of velvet covered benches if your feet grow weary. It has a globe’s worth of treasures, everything from Roman antiquities to modern art.

atrium of the Cleveland Museum of Art

The first floor casts you back in time to the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Islamic periods.

The most impressive pieces from antiquity are the Cleveland Apollo (a bronze Greek sculpture that is one of the rarest artworks in the US) and a Roman statue of Marcus Aurelius.

There’s also a beautiful collection of Greek vases. And intricate tapestries, which were originally housed in the Chateau Chaumont in the Loire Valley.

READ : Itinerary for France’s Loire Valley

There’s also a good collection of Medieval and early Renaissance art. My favorite piece was a tondo by Filippino Lippi. But there are also works by Botticelli, Fra Angelico, and Filippo Lippi.

Monet water lilies at the Cleveland Museum of Art

On the second floor, you’ll find an impressive collection of French, British, and American art and furnishings from the 16th to 18th centuries. You’ll see works by Jacque-Louis David, Thomas Eakin, John Singer Sargent, and a stunning collection of Tiffany stained glass.

In the Neo-classical Gallery, you’ll find Charles Meynier’s painting cycle Apollo and the Muses .

In the East Wing, you’ll find the museum’s modern art collections. There are pieces by Picasso (the famous La Vie ), Van Gogh, Monet (a massive water lily), Degas, Matisse, and Dali. There’s quite a few pieces by the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin , including his magnificent Age of Bronze .

You can download the museum’s ArtLens App to get a preview of the museum before visiting.

You could easily spend 2-4 hours there, depending on how much art you want to consume. Since the museum is free, you can always visit multiple times to avoid museum fatigue.

flowers in Cleveland's Botanical Gardens

5. Botanical Gardens

A mere 1000 feet from the museum, you can shake off any museum fatigue in Cleveland’s small but beautiful Botanical Gardens.

The Cleveland Botanical Gardens are a plant-science research center as well as a great thing to do in Cleveland in 2 days.

The gardens are packed with beautiful species of plants, many of which flower. It was first created in 1930 and spans over 10 acres. There’s a glasshouse that covers 18,000 square feet and 11 varying gardens outside.

These include the stunning Butterfly Gardens, the Japanese Garden, and the Inspiration Area.

Selections include 50 different bird species, 350 rare plant species, and animal species like amphibians and reptiles.

grilled cauliflower at Salt

If you’re going to the theater or a concert, have dinner downtown at Adega (Mediterranean), Cibreo Italian Kitchen (Tuscan Italian), or District (American).

For pre-dinner drinks, head to the Azure Rooftop Lounge at the top of the Metropolitan on East 9th Street. Or take a craft brewery tour to check out Cleveland’s hip and trendy breweries.

If you’re not attending a show in Playhouse Square, head to Cleveland’s Lakewood neighborhood for dinner. Lakewood is known for its gorgeous waterfront homes.

But there’s a bevy of great restaurants, including Salt .

the iconic chandelier in Playhouse Square

7. Playhouse Square

Playhouse Square is a regional mecca for all manner of performing arts. Its the second largest arts center in the United States. Playhouse Square is billed as the country’s largest arts venue outside NYC, with 9 theaters in a one block radius.

You’ll find traveling Broadway shows, concerts, and original local productions. The main theaters are KeyBank State Theatre and Mimi Ohio Theatre.

Playhouse Square is also home to the world’s largest outdoor chandelier. At nighttime, it’s beautifully lit up. The easiest place to park, though not cheap, is the designated parking garage for Playhouse Square.

8. Cleveland Indians/Gardians

If you’re into baseball more than theater, head to Progressive Field to see a Cleveland Indians game. Soon to be the Cleveland Guardians, they play in a clean ballpark with great sight lines.

More Than 2 Days In Cleveland?

Do you have extra time to spend in Cleveland beyond this two day in Cleveland itinerary? If so, here some of the other best things to do and see in Cleveland.

1. Lake Erie Waterfront

There’s plenty to do on Cleveland’s Lake Erie Waterfront. You can rent a kayak, jet ski, or paddleboat.

It’s also a great place to plunk down for locally brewed beers or seafood cuisine at a waterfront restaurant. Try Alley Cat Oyster Bar for lobster rolls and, of course, oysters.

Severance Hall, home to the Cleveland Orchestra

2. Cleveland Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the best in the United States. It performs in the University Circle area in uptown in Severance Hall . The opulent concert hall is one of the most beautiful in the United States. It’s nicknamed Cleveland’s Taj Mahal.

You should purchase tickets in advance. There’s parking onsite.

3. Edgewater Park

This lovely green space in Cleveland is only a 10 minute drive from downtown. It has the only real beach to enjoy in the area, open from mid June to mid August.

You can run, bike, swim, or just relax. The Edgewater Beach House is a multi-functional space with concession stands and a bar.

Terminal Tower in Public Square

4. Terminal Tower Observation Deck

Do you like views? If so, the Terminal Tower Observation Deck offers great views of downtown Cleveland, the lakefront, and the surrounding Cuyahoga River Valley.

The tower has also been featured in many movies, such as The Avengers . The tower was once one of the largest buildings in the United States, a milestone in skyscraper architecture.

The observation deck is only open on afternoon weekend. You can buy tickets online here. Or purchase them at the information desk.

5. Great Lakes Science Center

Science geeks should head to the Great Lakes Science Center . It’s a museum and educational facility that makes science and technology come to life.

There are interactive exhibits, a theater, and a NASA space center. You can also step aboard the Steamship William G. Mother.

Brewnuts in Gordon Arts Square

6. Gordon Arts Square

Gordon Arts Square is a quirky up and coming neighborhood. You’ll find vintage and artisan shops, boutiques, and three theaters.

The best thing to do in Gordon Arts Square is hit up Brewnuts . You need to go early before they sell out. Expect a line.

Brewnuts is a sunlit combo shop specializing in craft beer based donuts. The shop has different flavors every day. You can check out the goods on Brewnuts’ Instagram account.

If you’d like something less caloric, head to Blue Habanero , for street tacos and margaritas. Or grab brunch at Luxe Kitchen & Lounge .

lobby of the Klimpton Schonfield

Tips For Spending 2 Days In Cleveland

1. where to stay in cleveland.

On this visit, I stayed at the Kimpton Schofield , a historic boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Cleveland.

Kimpton hotels aren’t sterile like your standard generic hotel. They have personality, cool decor, and complimentary wine during happy hour every day.

The hotel is in an excellent location: downtown Cleveland, steps away from the Arcade and 4th Street. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the waterfront and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Another cool place is Metropolitan at the 9 . It’s a hotel with a touch of bling located in the striking Cleveland Trust Building. The hotel is unique because it has an indoor dog park called Bark and a yoga studio.

If you want a more luxe hotel in Cleveland, head to the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland or the Four Seasons . You can also try a reliable standby like the Hilton Cleveland Downtown .

downtown skyline on the Cuyahoga River

2. Driving & Parking in Cleveland

Cleveland is shockingly easy to drive in. The downtown is eminently walkable. But it’s easy to drive to the surrounding neighborhoods or uptown.

Parking downtown is a pain though. If you’re staying at a hotel downtown, you’ll be socked with a hefty overnight parking charge.

Elsewhere in Cleveland, you can find metered parking. Or, there’s street parking.

The only place I found difficult to park was on Euclid Avenue uptown and in Little Italy. But I eventually found spots to park.

mural in the Ohio City neighborhood next to West Side Market

3. How To Get To Cleveland

You can fly to Cleveland. The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is 12 miles from downtown. The Cleveland Amtrak Station is also located downtown.

Cleveland is near quite a few other cities. You can easily drive from Pittsburgh, Columbus, Akron, Detroit, or Toledo.

It was the first bridge to allow people to travel across the Cuyahoga River easily by car.

Even more fascinating is the streetcar deck beneath the bridge’s topmost level.

Now abandoned since the 1950s, it lies unused and with no purpose, creating an eerie and atmospheric environment that seems quite out of place anywhere near Cleveland.

Occasionally, tours are conducted, and it was once used for the Ingenuity Fest of the region – but now it sits quietly, perfect for exploring if you’re there for a weekend.

If you’re seeking for fun things to do in Cleveland, you really need to look no further than this singularly unique world-record-breaking, unusual item: a rubber stamp that measures 49 feet.

The stamp reads “Free” across its bottom in big red letters, a homage to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument of Cleveland opposite the building it is housed in.

The rubber stamp was commissioned by Alton Whitehouse, the CEO of Standard Oil of Ohio, in 1985.

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, a wife and husband pair who are also well-known sculptors, created the gigantic piece to add a pop of color to the greyscale appearance of the 659-foot tall Sohio Building.

It wasn’t until 1991 that this stamp was finally brought out of a warehouse and placed in downtown Cleveland, Ohio from a storage facility in Indiana .

It had waited there because Robert Horton, the CEO of British Petroleum – a company that bought over Sohio – did not approve of it.

Now, it waits in Willard Park , finally receiving the spotlight it deserves.

Specifically, it is based in Burke’s terminal and, while it doesn’t exactly seem like the most stereotypical-looking of museums, it’s still one of the cooler things to see in Cleveland, Ohio.

Glass cases line the interior of this building, containing a wide variety of interesting historical artifacts – like stewardess uniforms from back in the day, and the Ruby Wine Sheldon’s helmet.

It may not be the largest museum in Cleveland, but the International Women’s Air & Space Museum is still a great place to go – just proving that size does not matter when it comes to history!

The Frozen Cleveland Lighthouse is one of the most underrated tourist attractions that you can see in Ohio.

It can be seen not far from Lake Erie, and this phenomenon first started in 2010.

The lake water rushed upwards in the winter, and the incessant splattering caused the lighthouse to freeze over.

Now, the Frozen Cleveland Lighthouse – which is also tilted a bit to the right – is entirely encased in snow during the colder months.

It’s a special sculpture made by Mother Nature herself, and it’s a true wonder to behold!

Though the original lighthouse was built in 1911, this new phenomenon makes it more than worth the visit.

Of course, this home is not always open to public tourists and visitors.

But during Social Nights, or throughout the Lent period where fish fry events occur, you’ll be able to walk right into this Cleveland spot, known as a St. Clair-Superior institution.

Its structure is old and dated, but that only adds to its charm.

We love to roam cities – and are highlighting the must-see Cleveland sights for you to explore on your own. That said, taking a guided tour is one of the top things to do in Downtown Cleveland – and we provide information on that as well.

Cleveland Public Square

View of Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio

Begin your discovery in the city-center Cleveland Public Square. Part of the original city plans (that date to 1796), the plaza is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Public Square is home to several Downtown Cleveland attractions that you don’t want to miss.

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument stands in the square as a tribute to Cuyahoga County Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War. The poignant memorial is comprised of a 125-foot-tall column, statues and a free museum. Use this monument guide for more information.

Standing on the north side of Public Square is the quaint Old Stone Church. The history of the church dates to 1820 and it is known for its Tiffany-designed stained-glass windows. The church is open to visitors for free.

On the square’s southwest corner is the landmark Terminal Tower. The 52-story building was erected in the 1920s and was the second-tallest building in the world when it was completed. In fact, it still ranks as the second-tallest building in the state of Ohio today (just behind the 57-story Key Tower, also in Cleveland). The adjoining Tower City Center complex houses offices, a mall, a hotel, the Jack Cleveland Casino, and the central subway and light rail station.

The Arcade Shopping Mall

Considered to be the first indoor shopping mall in the USA, visiting The Arcade is one of the top things to do in Cleveland Downtown. The opulent building, a National Historic Landmark, was built in 1890 and earned the nickname, Crystal Palace. The most impressive features are the glass roof and the four levels of balconies.

The space is now occupied by boutique shops, a food court and a Hyatt Hotel (which is one of our recommended Cleveland hotels!).

East 4th Street

The uber-hip East 4th Street is a favorite entertainment hub in Downtown Cleveland. The pedestrian-only street is lined with some of the best eateries and bars in the city. Plus, the CLE Clothing Company is a great spot to pick up a Cleveland souvenir. The vibrant atmosphere of East 4th is especially palpable at night.

Millionaires’ Row

Euclid Avenue marks what was once called Cleveland’s Millionaires’ Row. The massive mansions that stood on the street belonged to the wealthiest citizens during the manufacturing heyday. In fact, John D. Rockefeller – by far the richest Cleveland resident – owned a home on Euclid Ave.

Today, only four original mansions still stand on the street. The Mather Mansion at 2605 Euclid Avenue remains one of the top historic Cleveland Downtown attractions.

Playhouse Square

The epicenter of performing arts in Cleveland, Playhouse Square is an entertainment destination in downtown. Lavishly decorated theaters, brightly lit marquess and an extravagant outdoor chandelier are key markers of the district.

The Cleveland Mall and Neoclassical Buildings

Fountain of Eternal Life, The Mall, Cleveland, Ohio

The Mall in Cleveland is a public space and outdoor park surrounded by iconic civic structures. Strolling along The Mall to gander at the grandiose architecture is one of the best things to do Downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

Inspired by the City Beautiful Movement of the late 1800s, the Cleveland Mall was a three-decade project that began in 1903. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The buildings to see that should be on your Cleveland to-do list include City Hall, Cuyahoga County Courthouse, Metzenbaum Courthouse, Cleveland Public Library and the Federal Reserve Bank.

Veterans’ Plaza, which is part of the Mall, hosts the Fountain of Eternal Life (also called the War Memorial Fountain). It is one of the best places to go in Cleveland for an encompassing view of The Mall.

Willard Park and The FREE Stamp

Willard Park and Free Stamp, Cleveland, Ohio

Taking a walk through Willard Park to see the gigantic Free Stamp is one of our favorite Downtown Cleveland things to do.

Designed by Pop Art creators, Oldenburg and van Bruggen, the 49-foot-long stamp is the ‘world’s largest office stamp.’ The Largest Rubber Stamp artwork celebrates the freeing of America’s slaves after the Civil War. Read more about the stamp’s story .

Voinovich Bicentennial Park and North Coast Harbor

View of Cleveland Ohio Sights

One of the top things to do in Downtown Cleveland is to visit the North Coast Harbor and Voinovich Park on the shoreline of Lake Erie. North Coast Harbor hosts numerous top attractions in Cleveland, OH.

In addition to free events (like lakeside yoga and summertime concerts), Voinovich Bicentennial Park is one of the best places to go in Cleveland for city views. A Cleveland Script Sign (one of five in the city) sits alongside the harbor for fun photo ops.

Guided Downtown Cleveland Tour

We have highlighted what to do in Downtown Cleveland for some of the best sightseeing for visitors. That said, a local tour guide can provide more detailed information and lead you along the route. If you prefer to let a guide lead the way, we recommend joining a highly rated tour, like this one one .

#2 An Afternoon of the Best Downtown Cleveland Activities

Some of the top things to do in Cleveland, Ohio are visiting the attractions at the North Coast Harbor. Consider adding one (or more) of these fun activities to do at North Coast Harbor to your Cleveland trip itinerary.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland was where the term Rock and Roll was coined and the first city to host a live Rock and Roll concert. So, it just makes sense that the top Cleveland attraction is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In fact, it’s one of the Best Things To See in all of Ohio !

The museum features music memorabilia, artifacts, live music and special exhibits. History of the greatest rock and roll musicians – from The Beatles to Beyoncé – are on display. Buy your ticket in advance!

Great Lakes Science Center

An informative place to learn about science, space, the environment and energy, the Great Lakes Science Center is one of the top things to do in Cleveland for kids. The educational museum has interactive exhibits that make learning fun and is home to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center.

Steamship William G Mather Museum

A historic Great Lakes freighter ship built in 1925, visitors can step aboard to experience firsthand what it was like to work on steamships. Visitors can see the cargo holds, peer into the pilot house, and stand in the 4-story engine room.

USS COD Submarine Memorial

The USS Cod is a retired United States Navy submarine and National Historic Landmark that is open for tours. Used during World War II (and the only sub from that war completely intact), the submarine’s engines were built right here in Cleveland.

International Women’s Air and Space Museum

Dedicated to preserving the history of women in flight, the International Women’s Air and Space Museum offers a small but interesting collection of exhibits. Located at the Burke Lakefront Airport, guests are welcome to see the displays on their own or book a guided tour ( in advance ). There is no fee to enter the museum – it’s one of the free things to do in Cleveland!

Goodtime Lake Cruise

The Goodtime III is one of the fun Cleveland tourist attractions! Boat cruises run throughout the summer months, providing epic views and fun for family and friends alike. Goodtime III operates multiple Cleveland boat tour options – from sightseeing cruises to dinner cruises. The evening jazz and city lights cruises are some of the fun things to do in Cleveland at night!

#3 Things To Do at Night in Cleveland

The Guardians, Cleveland, Ohio

End your first day with one of the fun things to do in Downtown Cleveland at night. We already mentioned the Goodtime III Night Cruise, but there are more places to go in Downtown Cleveland after dark!

Cleveland Sports

Watch a Baseball game at Progressive Field, Cleveland

Cheering on the local team is one of the best things to do in Downtown Cleveland! The city’s three professional sports teams – the Cleveland Guardians (MLB), Cleveland Browns (NFL) and Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) – all play in stadiums that are located in the heart of the city.

We love summertime evening baseball games – and Progressive Field is an outstanding stadium to see the action. Even if there’s not any home games during your trip to Cleveland, it is worth checking out Progressive Park Stadium on a tour and walking across the 1927 Hope Memorial Bridge.

This historic bridge is one of the top things to see in Downtown Cleveland. The bridge’s statues are known as the Guardians of Traffic – and provided the inspiration for the baseball team’s new moniker.

The Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse sits right next door to Progressive Field – and is where the Cleveland Cavs play their basketball games. The FieldHouse is also home to the Cleveland Monsters AHL hockey team.

Exterior view of First Energy Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio, USA

The lakefront 68,000 seat Cleveland Stadium is where the Browns play football. It is also right across from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and next to the Great Lakes Science Center.

Watch a Live Performance

With 10 theaters at Playhouse Square, there is ample opportunity to catch a live performance. From Broadway to ballet to comedy and concerts, there is always something happening at Playhouse Square.

Before (or after) the performance, grab dinner and drinks on East 4th Street. It’s the most happening place in Downtown Cleveland at night!

The Cleveland Flats

The Flats are legendary (or should we say notorious?) and are another one of the fun places to go in Downtown Cleveland. The low-lying banks of the Cuyahoga River were once the grittiest part of industrial Cleveland. That all changed in the 1990s when the district was transformed into a party hub. Predictably, the party got out of control and the boisterous Cleveland nightlife hub was shut down.

Recently, however, The Flats were overhauled once again – this time bringing upscale eateries, cool craft breweries and plenty of opportunities for good times.

Our top picks for places to go in The Flats for a fun night out are Collision Bend Brewing Co, Alley Cat Oyster Bar and Punch Bowl Social.

DAY 2 of Cleveland, Ohio Things To Do

On Day 2 of your Cleveland 3-Day Itinerary, head west of downtown into the foodie-favorite Ohio City district.

West Side Market, Ohio City

Checking out the Westside Market Food Hall, Cleveland, Ohio

There is no better place to embark on a day of discovering Ohio City than at the West Side Market. The massive landmark dates to 1912 and is the oldest market in Cleveland.

More than 100 vendors are packed inside the iconic market doling out everything from savory meats to sweet treats. Perusing the goods is one of the best Cleveland activities for tourists. We recommend seeking out the prepared and ready-to-eat foods, like a classic Frank’s Bratwurst, a tasty Steve’s Gyro, or pierogis from the Pierogi Palace.

For a truly complete experience at the West Side Market, take a food tour – it’s one of the best things to do in Cleveland! The lunchtime tour features delicious bites from 15 different vendors. Book your space!

Alternative Options for Breakfast and Lunch in Ohio City

Cleveland Bagel Company, Ohio

We think the West Side Market is the best place to eat lunch in Ohio City. If you happen to be eating in Ohio City for breakfast and lunch, we have a few recommendations for options beyond the market.

The Cleveland Bagel Company makes a great breakfast. Try a hand-rolled Rosemary Sea Salt bagel with Thyme Blackpepper Horseradish cream cheese and thank me later!

The innovative concept of combining donuts and beer is what makes Brewnuts one of the most interesting places to eat breakfast in Ohio City. Not only are the donuts made with local craft beer, but they sell it on tap, too.

Entrance and Sign Board for Larder Delicatessen, Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Alternatively, if you are looking for a mid-day meal, then eat at the Larder Delicatessen. The pastrami sandwich is the signature dish – but we would go back just for the potato salad. You could wrap all this foodie goodness into an event by joining an Ohio City Food Tour. Reserve Your Spot !

Greetings from Cleveland Mural

Greetings from Cleveland, Ohio

A fun photo op, the Greetings from Cleveland street art mural is one of the cool places in Cleveland to see. Created by graffiti artist Victor Ving, the mural was painted in 2015. You can easily find the giant postcard-style mural at the corner of West 25th Street and Chatham. MAP .

Ohio City Neighborhood Stroll

Historic Ohio City, Cleveland, Ohio

We love old neighborhoods, like Ohio City, that are extremely walkable, feature tree-lined streets and amazing architecture. Franklin Boulevard in Ohio City was once one of the most prestigious Cleveland streets – and historic houses, like the Franklin Castle, are still standing. Take a walk through the neighborhood to see what gems you might find!

While it is certainly possible to get from one brewery to the next on your own, it’s a lot more fun to visit Cleveland breweries with a tour guide. Get tour details and reserve your space!

Greater Cleveland Aquarium

Housed in a former power plant on the West Bank of the Cuyahoga River, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is one of the top Cleveland, Ohio attractions and a perfect indoor activity. Visitors can walk through the Seatube, feed a stingray and see sharks up close. The aquarium is rated as one of the top kids’ things to do in Cleveland – but it is fun for visitors of all ages!

#6 An Evening in Ohio City

Regardless of what you do in the afternoon, circle back around to Ohio City in the evening for food, drinks and fun.

Ohio City is home to an astounding number of local craft breweries. One of the fun things to do in Cleveland at night is to bar hop from brewery to brewery in Ohio City.

A few of our favorite places for a pint of fresh brew straight from the source are Great Lakes Brewing Co, Nano Brew and Saucy Brew Works (where they make great pizzas, too!).

North High Brewing – from Columbus – has also opened operations in Ohio City. Other brewers to check out in the district are Bookhouse Brewing, Market Garden Brewery (the parent of Nano), Hansa Brewery, Forest City Brewery, Terrestrial Brewing Company and Platform Beer Co.

Our recommended Ohio City breweries are located within a few miles (or steps) of one another – so you can easily create your own Ohio City craft beer bar crawl!

Cocktails in Ohio City

While Cleveland is known for its craft breweries, the cocktail scene is also on point! Cocktail aficionados will not want to miss the Velvet Tango Room in Ohio City. It makes many master mixologist lists as the best cocktail bar in Cleveland. The cozy environment is inviting, like a speakeasy and they feature live jazz music, as well.

Fun Bars in Ohio City

Travelers looking for a good time in Cleveland can opt to go to one of the fun Ohio City bars. We already mentioned Brewnuts (for donuts and craft beers) and Tabletop Board Game Café (for games and sandwiches) – but both are fantastic drinking holes, too.

Another favorite bar that adds a heaping dose of nostalgia is the Superelectric Pinball Parlor – where patrons can play unlimited games for a flat price while enjoying their beverage of choice.

Gordon Square Arts District in Detroit-Shoreway

One of the cool things to do in Cleveland at night is to go to the Gordon Square Arts District for a theater performance. The recently revitalized district lies within the West Cleveland Detroit Shoreway community. The diverse neighborhood boasts 3 performance spaces: Cleveland Public Theater, Capitol Theater and Near West Theater – as well as delicious dining options.

The things to see in Cleveland, Ohio on Day 3 are located in these 3 districts: Little Italy, University Circle and Shaker Square. #7 Little Italy, Cleveland

Flags flying in Little Italy in Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Little Italy is one our favorite places to visit in Cleveland, Ohio. The enclave was settled by Italian immigrants in the early 1900s and today Italian and American flags fly together over the main thoroughfare, Mayfield Road. Shopping and eating are the district’s main draws, but there are a few sights to see, as well – so we are highlighting the best things to do in Little Italy Cleveland.

Holy Rosary Church

The Baroque-style Holy Rosary Church was built in 1910 for the Italian community – and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, visitors can see the beautiful stained-glass windows and artworks within the church.

The Holy Rosary Church congregation organizes an annual 4-day street festival, Feast of the Assumption, every August.

Alta House Community Center

The landmark Alta House was built in 1900 (and was commissioned by JD Rockefeller). The community center continues to be a place of gathering – complete with bocce ball courts.

Restaurants in Little Italy, Cleveland

Guarino's, Little Italy, Cleveland, Ohio, USA

As one would expect, restaurants in Little Italy serve authentic Italian fare; dining at one of the Little Italy establishments is one of the top Cleveland, OH things to do. The tantalizing scents waft down the street luring in hungry patrons…the only problem for visitors is choosing which one to eat at!

The most famous eatery in Little Italy is Guarino’s – the first Italian restaurant to open in the State of Ohio…and the oldest restaurant in Cleveland. With old-world charm and passed-down recipes, Guarino’s offers a superb dining experience.

eat at Presti’s Bakery, Little Italy, Cleveland, Ohio

That said, Presti’s Bakery is our top choice for a casual – but oh-so-delicious – mid-day meal in Little Italy. Opened as a bread shop in 1903, the bakery cranks out unbelievably delicious sandwiches, Stromboli, pizza – and bakery sweets, too. Whatever you eat, save room for cannoli, they are absolutely divine!

Lake View Cemetery

Lakeview Cemetery, President James A Garfield Monument, Cleveland, Ohio

Established in 1869, many prominent Clevelanders are buried at the cemetery. The two most famous people to be interred at Lake View Cemetery are US President James A Garfield and America’s first billionaire, John D Rockefeller.

Visitors can visit the Memorial Hall inside the elaborate James A Garfield monument, which features the former US president’s statue, stained-glass windows and a crypt for Garfield and his family. A simple-but-tall 70-foot obelisk marks Rockefeller’s burial place.

Why Go To Cleveland

This 78-square-mile city is responsible for giving the world so much more than just LeBron James and Halle Berry. In fact, without Cleveland, the United States would be very different: Cleveland was once (and still is) an industrial powerhouse thanks to its booming steel industry and manufacturing plants. The city produced much of the raw material — specifically steel — used during the Industrial Revolution that contributed to the overall development of the country. And although Cleveland might not exactly come to mind when planning a city vacation, it should — for multiple reasons. Not only is it a culinary mecca and an outdoor adventurer's paradise, but this northeastern Ohio city, located on the shores of Lake Erie, is going through some monumental changes. Changes like cleaner streets and parks, and the introduction of new hotels and trendy restaurants, which only add to the already lengthy list of things to do and see.

Cleveland has all the hustle and bustle you'd expect of a big city, but still manages to maintain a small-town feel. Its 23,000 acres of parks and nature preserves provide an easy escape from the city while the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Museum of Art pay homage to the city's rich history. Cleveland is a place that appeals to nature-lovers, sports fanatics and foodies alike. And who knows, you may even turn into what Clevelanders call a "Cleveland-gelical" by the end of your trip.

Cleveland Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Cleveland is from September through October or from April to May when the temperatures aren't freezing cold like in the winter or hot and humid as in the summer. During these months, you're likely to see pleasant weather with temps between the 60s and 70s that taper off in the evenings. That being said, there really is no bad time to visit Cleveland. The city is always buzzing and there are plenty of activities and festivals offered year-round, so it just depends on what type of trip you prefer. And thanks to its Midwest location, Cleveland has all four seasons — fall, winter, spring and summer — catering to visitors of all interests.

Weather in Cleveland

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

It's a young city The median age of those who live in Cleveland is just 35 years old, making it a great place for young professionals to enjoy the sights as well as a fun night out.

It's made for outdoor enthusiasts You'll find a ton of outdoor adventures, such as biking and hiking trails, thanks to the city's location on the shores of Lake Erie among thousands of acres of greenery.

It's a HUGE sports city Cleveland loves its sports teams and chances are you're going to meet some die-hard Indians, Cavaliers and Browns fans. And if you're in town for a game, make sure you take the opportunity to go.

How to Save Money in Cleveland

Buy a Cleveland Pass  Instead of paying per ride for public transportation, consider buying a  Cleveland Pass  which offers one-, two- and four-day passes that include unlimited rides on the bus, rail, trolley and BRT.

Visit in off-season  The summer is Cleveland's peak tourist season with hotel rates at an all-time high. Consider visiting either from September through November or April to May when room rates are lower and crowds are fewer.

Avoid taxis  Cleveland has such a great public transportation system — thanks to its many buses, trains, trolleys and the BRT. Taxis will only end up costing you more and can often take longer.

What to Eat

Foodies will delight in this city's offerings because Clevelanders sure love their food. Beyond the various breweries, wineries and food tours, the city is home to an array of top chefs and restaurants. Whether you're looking for fine dining, a hole-in-the-wall bar or a trendy club and restaurant, Cleveland has it all. Cleveland is known as an all-American city and, by default, serves up some of the best all-American classic cuisine, infused with a gastronomical twist. After grabbing a sandwich at long-time local favorite, Sylman's Deli , stop by Sweet Moses for homemade ice cream, pies, cookies and cake. But if you're looking for something a bit trendier and upbeat, head to Fire or Lola Bistro , both restaurants where you can indulge in the latest and greatest culinary fads.

If you're craving something more diverse, fear not: Cleveland has a large European population, which contributes to its wealth of eateries serving up international cuisine. Momocho offers classic Mexican dishes with a modern spin, while L'Abatros Brasserie serves French fare and features an extensive wine list. And we don't forget the city's famous Little Italy, with restaurants that almost make you forget you're in Cleveland and not somewhere in Italia. Presti's Bakery , Mia Bella and Flour are all known for serving delicious classic Italian dishes.

Getting Around Cleveland

The best way to get around Cleveland is via public transportation. In fact, one of the greatest things about Cleveland is how easy and cheap it is to get around the city (in some cases, it's free). Thanks to Cleveland's extensive public transportation system (the Regional Transit Authority) — which includes rails, buses, trolleys and the bus rapid transit aka the BRT — visitors will have no problem navigating the city and reaching all major tourist attractions.

To get to the city, you can fly into the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) located about 12 miles southwest of the city center. There is an RTA station inside of the airport on the lower level of the main terminal that provides service between the airport and downtown Cleveland. Hop on the RTA Red Line Rapid Train which will take you directly to Cleveland's Public Square. If you'd rather take a taxi, the airport has its own flat rate taxi service, as well as three partnering taxi companies with taxi stands located directly outside of the baggage claim, adjacent to carousel 11.

Cotton candy-colored skies are the norm in Cleveland during sunrise and sunset.

In the 1800s, Cleveland was one of the most important canal ports in the eastern United States and an industrial center where some of the richest American entrepreneurs made their fortunes. Among those who lived here around the turn of the 19th century were John D. Rockefeller and Samuel Mather.

Today, the remnants of Cleveland's historical railway and canal notoriety serve as an eclectic backdrop for a vibrant city that is turning warehouses into boutique hotels and is a prominent destination for world-class sporting events and concerts near the waterfront.

Playhouse Square

Playhouse Square is in the heart of Cleveland's Theater District . There are multiple theaters that operate separately in the district, bringing in Broadway performances, comedy, dance, opera, concerts, and family shows.

The theaters are The Allen Theatre, Hanna Theatre, Mimi Ohio Theatre, Keybank State Theatre, Connor Place, Westfield Studio Theatre, and Kennedy's Cabaret.

These theaters, primarily built in the 1920s, were saved from demolition in the 1970s by local community organizations and individual people who undertook a gradual restoration of the properties. Most of the restoration took place in the 1980s and 1990s and the project was one of Cleveland's greatest urban renewal success stories.

You can plan an arts weekend out of just this area with plenty of dining and lodging options right near the square. Have a look at the Playhouse Square events schedule to see what's happening during your visit.

Address: 1501 Euclid Avenue, Suite 200, Cleveland, Ohio

Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art , more commonly referred to as the MOCA , features rotating temporary exhibits by national and international artists as well as local artists in the Cleveland area.

The museum's new building, which opened in 2012, is a unique and impressive structure designed by Farshid Moussavi. This mirror-finished structure begins from the ground as a hexagon and rises to become a square at the top, creating all kinds of angles.

MOCA has public programs throughout the year, including artist talks and gallery tours.

A night out in the Flats District in Cleveland is a must-experience at least once. The Flats is the entertainment district on the banks of the Cuyahoga River . The area is filled with a variety of casual to fine dining options, live music, and entertainment like comedy shows.

The urban vibe of the area is one generated by the district's rebirth over the years, becoming the he art of Cleveland's social scene . It is a great spot to spend an entire evening, or to wrap up the day on the riverfront enjoying the city lights and the skyline.

A Christmas Story House

One of the most admired attractions in Cleveland is the A Christmas Story House that was the hallmark of the famous 1983 holiday movie . This movie-set home is open to visitors for tours, and it has remained just like it appears in scenes from the nostalgic movie classic.

You will recognize the interior of the home, especially the famous leg lamp. You can even buy your own replica of it in the gift shop across the street. There are a couple of buildings to see including the museum that has preserved some of the costumes from the movie and props like the family's car.

The home and tourist attraction are tucked away in a residential neighborhood, making it even more charming. True movie fans can even book an overnight at the A Christmas Story House or the Bumpus house next door, which was home to the fictional neighbors.

Luxury Hotels :

  • In a great position near the waterfront, and just a short stroll from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Convention Center, is The Westin Cleveland Downtown .
  • A few blocks inland from here, and frequently rated as one of the top hotels in the city, the Metropolitan at The 9, Autograph Collection , near Playhouse Square, has an indoor dog park.
  • The Hyatt Regency Cleveland at the Arcade , in a historic building downtown, is conveniently located near the East 4th Street Entertainment District, with good restaurants and shopping.

Person dies after falling off Ohio Stadium stands during Ohio State University graduation

C OLUMBUS, Ohio — A person died at Ohio Stadium Sunday after falling from the stands during Ohio State University’s graduation ceremony.

University spokesman Ben Johnson had few additional details. He said police and other emergency responders are on scene. The university will make counseling and other support resources available to those affected by it, Johnson said.

An eyewitness told the Columbus Dispatch , which has reporters on scene, that the person fell just as the final graduates were filing past the area where the fall occurred. The commencement ceremony’s speakers did not reference the incident, the Dispatch reported.

WBNS TV, citing Columbus police, reported that medics declared the person dead at 12:25 p.m. The ceremony was scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and last for two and a half to three hours, according to OSU officials.

This breaking story will be updated as additional details become available.

Seven Ohio State transfers and what a still loaded quarterback room says about the program Buckeye Talk: Ohio State podcast by cleveland.com

The second transfer portal window wasn't quite as explosive for Ohio State football as the first as it only lost seven players none being players considered to win a starting role this season. On this episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis break down OSU's roster retention heading into the summer and whether there is any impact to the few losses. Then the trio has a conversation about the Buckeyes holding on to all four scholarship quarterbacks and what that says about the mentality of the room and the type of recruit who'd signed up to be part of something like that.
