Things To Do In Salt Lake City

In order for something to float it needs to be less dense than the water (or air) surrounding it. It’s part of the reason a piece of driftwood floats down a river and helium-filled balloons rise. It also explains one of Great Salt Lake’s most famous phenomena, the fact that swimmers float with little to no effort because the lake is so dense with salt.

In a way, that’s what Salt Lake City is all about — an effortless balance between nature and city living. The Capital City lies in between Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountain Range, and is growing into a vibrant blend of culture and heritage. Take a hike, find a new favorite restaurant, explore the state’s heritage or enjoy a lively night out. It’s all available to you in Salt Lake City, but just in case you aren’t sure where to start, here are a few of the city’s most popular things to do.

Bonneville salt flats.

As the ancient Lake Bonneville dwindled into what is now Great Salt Lake, it left behind the Bonneville Salt Flats — vast stretches of nearly perfectly flat desert floors. The Salt Flats are best known as the location where landspeed world records have been set numerous times, but they are also a serene backdrop for photo opportunities and art exhibits. They cover much of the stretch between Salt Lake City and Wendover, Nevada. If you’re going to visit, be sure to stay on public lands and travel responsibly.

Eccles Theater

The Eccles Theater hosts popular touring Broadway shows and concerts in downtown Salt Lake City.

Great Salt Lake

There’s a lot to do at Great Salt Lake. As you know, it is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for swimming and floating. It’s also a great place to see wildlife, being that the lake is one of the largest (and saltiest) inland bodies of water in the Western Hemisphere. Herds of bison roam Antelope Island State Park, and hundreds of uncommon bird species can be seen at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. A quick half-hour drive from downtown Salt Lake City, Great Salt Lake is an idyllic place to spend a mellow day experiencing one of Utah’s most famous natural spaces.

Hale Center Theatre

Housed at the Mountain America Performing Arts Centre in Sandy, the Hale Center Theatre performs many well known live stage plays and musicals throughout the year.

Hogle Zoo has long been one of Utah’s favorite attractions, dating back to 1931. It’s truly a world-class zoo with 42 acres nestled in a canyon setting and hosting over 800 animals. It has received accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for its excellence. It’s only 15 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City in Emigration Canyon, right across the street from This Is The Place Heritage Park, a great spot to experience Utah’s pioneer history.

Natural History Museum of Utah

The Natural History Museum of Utah boasts the largest collection of horned dinosaur fossils in the world, and is packed with other fascinating and engaging exhibits to orient you to Utah’s unique geology and ancient history.

Red Butte Garden

Sharing the same property as the Natural History Museum of Utah, Red Butte Garden is a perfectly calm follow-up to the museum. Expect to learn about the state’s natural vegetation and see plenty of exquisite garden arrangements.

Temple Square

As you may know, Utah was settled by Brigham Young and pioneers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (popularly known as Mormons) in 1847. In the years that followed, Salt Lake City’s streets and buildings were built to follow a grid system, at the heart of which is Temple Square. The gardens in the square and Salt Lake Temple’s architecture are magnificent. Regardless of religion, Temple Square is a beautiful cornerstone of Utah’s heritage that is well-worth visiting and access to the grounds, museums and visitor centers outside the temple are free to visitors.

Temple Square Temple Square free

Temple Square's multi-block, 35-acre plaza is home to nearly 20 attractions related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's anchored by the towering Salt Lake Temple  – where, among other things, weekly meetings of the church's governing bodies are held – and other fascinating buildings like the expansive Tabernacle and the Gothic Revival-style Assembly Hall, which offer insight into the history and development of the church. You should also stop by the Family History Library , the largest genealogy library in the world. Once you've toured the sites, stroll through the square's scenic gardens and past the gurgling fountains.

Recent travelers recommend taking a free, guided tour of the square and also mention that you don't have to be particularly religious to find it of interest. Travelers note that while the area is nice to walk around, the temple is currently undergoing renovation. The building and its surroundings are closed to the public and much of the area is obscured with fences and scaffolding.

Great Salt Lake Great Salt Lake

Clocking in at roughly 35 miles wide and 75 miles long, the Great Salt Lake is the largest natural saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. The lake's name comes from the nature of the water: The evaporation process (the only exit available for the lake's water) leaves behind salty mineral deposits. Salt Lake City's visitors and residents enjoy the area's many hiking trails, ample picnic spots, and swimming, boating and fishing opportunities.

Great Salt Lake Park is one access point that's close to the city: just 20 miles west. Here, travelers will find a marina, a small beach trail and facilities like showers, concessions and restrooms. Another popular access point is Antelope Island, a state park located northwest of the city. While you'll be able to access the same scenery as Great Salt Lake Park, Antelope Island also features plenty of wildlife to spot (including bison and antelope). Plus, you'll find the Fielding Garr Ranch House, an 1800s house on its original foundation. You can only reach the island by driving around the lake's southeast shore, following Interstate 15 to exit 332. The drive is about 60 miles one-way.

The Bonneville Salt Flats may not be the first feature that comes to mind when thinking about Utah's ample natural beauty, but this 30,000-acre feature is worth a visit. From diverse viewing points the massive salt flats may look like desert covered by water, snow, or just like scenic mountains and hills in some places.

When ancient Lake Bonneville dried up, the salt flats were formed ( Great Salt Lake is another remnant of Lake Bonneville). Recent visitors were amazed by this natural wonder. Many noted how distinctive the flats were, and that you can see them from the road if you don’t have time for a longer stop. To conserve this geological feature, do not drive on the salt surface when it is wet – this is bad for the flats and vehicles alike. Be prepared for desert conditions: hot summers days and subzero winter temperatures. There are no facilities at the salt flats.

48 Hours in Salt Lake City: The Ultimate Itinerary

Salt Lake City is filled with things to do and places to get outdoors—so many, in fact, that you might not know where to start if you don’t have very long to spend exploring. Have 48 hours to spend in town? This itinerary will help you get familiar with the city and its history, its tasty food scene, give you a few ideas of things to do, as well as get you out into the beautiful natural surrounds that are just a short drive from the heart of town.

Day 1: Morning

9 a.m.: Start your day at Temple Square located in the heart of downtown. The complex opens to visitors at 9 a.m. and is the perfect place to orient yourself to the history of this unique city. Whether you’re a Latter-day Saint or have no idea about the area's Mormon history, you’ll find something to delve into here. If you need a bite to eat to start your day, stop by the Nauvoo Café in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

First and foremost, stroll the grounds as they are absolutely gorgeous at any time of year. Admire the towering Temple, which most people cannot enter, and the surrounding gardens. Visitors can go into most of the buildings in Temple Square, including the Tabernacle where the Tabernacle Choir originally performed. Nowadays the group performs at the Tabernacle Choir building when they’re in town. You can also stop by the North and South Visitors Centers to see a scale model of the Temple as well as the well-known giant statue of Jesus. Also don’t miss the Family History Library, which could easily take up the entire weekend if you really want to dig into your ancestry. If you don’t want to wander on your own, you can join one of the free Temple Square tours  lead by missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The tours will fill you in on the history of the Temple, Tabernacle, and more. You can join tours near the Conference Center or book online in advance.

11:30 a.m.: While you’re still at Temple Square, enjoy an indulgent lunch at The Roof Restaurant at the top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. If you'd rather dine elsewhere, there are lots of restaurants in downtown SLC, but The Roof is a treat with its stellar Temple views, upscale dining room, and delicious food served buffet-style. Start with some charcuterie and cheese, or enjoy a variety of appetizers from chilled shrimp to lemon-garlic lavash bread. Entree selections include carved prime rib, pan-seared salmon, smoked gouda mac and cheese, and more. But the best part is the decadent and varied dessert selection.

Day 1: Afternoon

1 p.m.: Explore downtown beyond Temple Square. You’ve got plenty of places to choose from. If you want to fit in some shopping, head to the Gateway  or City Creek Center , both of which are within walking or very short driving distance of Temple Square. Gateway is an open-air shopping center so if it’s July or August and it’s air conditioning you’re after, head to City Creek Center. If you want to keep the history train going, head to the nearby state Capitol  where you can wander the hallowed halls on your own or join a tour. As long as your group is 10 people or fewer, you can join the walk-in tours, which begin on the hour Monday through Friday. If you’re in the mood for something artsy, visit the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art , which is also within an easy walk of Temple Square and has many exhibitions to explore.

3 p.m.: Take some time to visit a museum or cultural site. Again, you have a few choices to choose from. If you have kids in tow, Discovery Gateway is a great children’s museum located inside the Gateway. It’s well-suited for younger kids, but if you have older kids, the Natural History Museum of Utah on the University of Utah campus or the Clark Planetarium are excellent choices. Yet another choice for all age groups is This Is The Place Heritage Park , which serves up everything from gold panning and gem digs for kids, to horseback rides, to more than 50 historic structures to explore, to shops and water features that kids can play in.

Day 1: Evening

4kodiak / Getty Images

6 p.m.: Take yourself to dinner and then out on the town. There are restaurants aplenty in downtown Salt Lake City, including places where you can enjoy dinner and a drink such as Squatters , O’Shucks Bar & Grill, and Red Rock Brewing Co. SLC is not known for its nightlife, but the truth is there are lots of fun ways to get out in the evening. Downtown Salt Lake City is home to several venues if you want to head out to catch a show. Look for concerts at the Urban Lounge or performances at Capitol Theatre .

Day 2: Morning

Joe_Guetzloff / Getty Images

9 a.m.: Now that you’ve learned all about the history and heart of Salt Lake City, check out the city’s more modern and outdoorsy sides. Start with breakfast at Blue Plate Diner , a quintessential diner with options for vegans, vegetarians, and gluten-free diners as well as traditional breakfast favorites. The food is plentiful and delicious and will fuel you up for the rest of the day.

10:30 a.m.: Sugar House is one of Salt Lake City’s most enjoyable neighborhoods to wander. It's filled with shops, restaurants, bars, attractive streets, and the excellent Sugar House Park . With the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop, the park has a paved trail looping around the pond at the center of the park that makes a great walk. Explore the streets and pop into some shops, which include plenty of big box stores, but also local spots and smaller chains like Himalayan Artswear, Downeast , Local Colors of Utah Gallery , and Raunch Records. After you’ve seen all there is to see, stop in at one of the area’s grocery stores (Smith’s and Whole Foods are both in Sugar House) and load up on snacks and drinks for the afternoon's hike.

Day 2: Afternoon

(c) Salil Bhatt / Getty Images

1 p.m.: You really shouldn’t visit Salt Lake City without going on a hike in one of the canyons in or just outside of the city. There are just so many and most of them contain moderate trails suitable for most hikers. Mill Creek Canyon is a solid choice. It has just about unlimited trail options and pets are allowed (they are not allowed in Big or Little Cottonwood Canyons, which are also popular hiking spots). If you want incredible views, hike your way up to Desolation Overlook (4.4 miles, 1,437-foot elevation gain) or Rattlesnake Gulch (3.3 miles, 816-foot elevation gain), which will score you views over the Salt Lake Valley. If you’re not much for hiking, still don’t miss a chance to get out into the canyons as they are beautiful year-round. Big Cottonwood Canyon or Little Cottonwood Canyon are both great for scenic drives.

Day 2: Evening

6 p.m.: After a half-day of hiking, you’ll be ready to refuel. Of course, there’s a whole city’s worth of restaurants to choose from, but if you aren’t sure where to start, Bombay House on Foothill Drive is amazing and close to the mouth of Millcreek Canyon. Since 1993, Bombay House has served up Indian cuisine in a comfy and lush interior. You’ll find everything from samosas to tandoori to a wide range of curries on the menu, but if you love chicken tikka masala, this restaurant has some of the best.

Best neighborhoods in Salt Lake City: saints, sinners and serene views

Temple Square dominates the downtown neighborhood of Salt Lake City

Temple Square dominates the downtown neighborhood of Salt Lake City

At more than 110 square miles, Salt Lake City has a diverse offering of neighborhoods to explore. Roam the bustling streets Downtown, get inspired in artistic Sugar House, appreciate the architecture in Capitol Hill, or take a walk in dog-friendly Central City.

No matter what vibe you’re looking for, Salt Lake City has a neighborhood for you. Pick a couple of ‘hoods and spend the weekend investigating them to really get a feel for the city. Here are some of our favorite neighborhoods in Utah's capital city.

Best for major sights and social scenes

Downtown Salt Lake City is typically bustling with activity. Restaurants and bars are buzzing and  Farmer’s Market shoppers are buying local produce. These busy streets are lined with skyscrapers and people are rushing around on bikes, by foot, in cars, and on trains – excellent public transportation and bike-sharing programs make it easy to navigate this neighborhood. This is the neighborhood for you if your preference is a fast-paced vacation filled with shopping, dining, and sightseeing.

The heart of Downtown centers around 10-acre Temple Square , which spans 10 city blocks. It is the city’s most popular attraction and is the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dotted around this main square you’ll find the Salt Lake Temple , Tabernacle , Assembly Hall, Conference Center, Church History Museum, Family History Library , Beehive House , Brigham Young Historic Park and more.

It may be home to a lot of the church's most prominent buildings, but this neighborhood certainly knows how to party. There are a wide variety of restaurants that offer cuisine from around the world and the nightlife is top-notch with craft cocktails and live music. Accommodation in the area ranges from luxury to cheap-and-cheerful – there's an option for every budget.

Central City

Best for art lovers.

Central City is an inspiring and trendy neighborhood that is a haven for artistic types and features galleries, live indie music, a sculpture garden and high-end fashion boutiques. A popular attraction in the area is the Gilgal Sculpture Garden with 12 sculptures and 70 large stones engraved with passages from the Latter-day Saints scripture. Fashionistas will love visiting the historic Trolley Square , a converted trolley barn turned into a high-end mall. And for a historical look at folk art, visit the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts , which displays folk art made by the state’s Indigenous communities. For bibliophiles, a stop at the impressive Salt Lake City Public Library is a must.

Central City is also a very family- and dog-friendly neighborhood with lots of parks, cafes, and shopping. One of the highlights of the area is the serene setting of Liberty Park, with 80 acres to explore. It features a pond, fountains, a gazebo, two playgrounds, a swimming pool, Bocce ball, as well as many recreational sports facilities. One of the most popular activities is the Tracy Aviary and Botanical Garden where visitors can observe a large variety of birds. This rural neighborhood doesn’t have many options for accommodation, but you can easily visit and enjoy it from a base in Downtown.

Utah State Capitol Building and the mountains of the Wasatch Range beyond, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

Capitol Hill

Best for history buffs.

The Capitol Hill neighborhood is home to the architecturally impressive Utah State Capitol . Guided tours of the Capitol building wow guests with an introduction to the original murals and sculptures throughout the property, as well as the breathtaking rotunda, a replica of the Liberty Bell, and rotating art exhibits that reflect the history of Utah and its people. Visitors are invited to enjoy the sprawling grounds that include a river, walking trails, picnic tables and picturesque monuments.

You’ll also find the Utah Office of Tourism in the Capitol Hill district. It’s a great place to get maps of the area and find out some local recommendations. Scattered throughout the area are several historic homes from the early 1900s, such as the Memorial House, the McCune Mansion and Ottinger Hall. Be sure to stop by the Pioneer Memorial Museum to view a treasure trove of artifacts from Utah’s founding citizens.

There is an abundance of open space and green areas in this neighborhood, including City Creek Natural Area and Ensign Peak, which offers incredible views of the city. Since this is more of a business district, there isn’t a wide range of places to stay, but Inn on the Hill is a charming bed and breakfast option.

The Sugar House district

Best for hipster foodies.

The Sugar House district is a hip, colorful neighborhood with plenty of places to shop, dine, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you want to go for a trail run, grab a cup of gourmet coffee on an outdoor patio, or shop for records and artsy home decor, the Sugar House district is the place to go.

The biggest attraction in this neighborhood is Sugar House Park . Spanning 110.5 acres, it is the largest public park in Salt Lake City. It features a beautiful pond, soccer and baseball fields, a basketball court, eight volleyball courts, and two playgrounds. In winter, the dedicated sleigh-riding hill is hugely popular with locals and visitors.

If your main focus is gastronomic delights, this is the neighborhood for you. Enjoy Belgian waffles and fries at Bruges Belgian Bistro, have breakfast any time of day at the Original Pancake House, share a meal over a hip campfire at Campfire Lounge, or try one of the many local brews at Wasatch Brewery. In addition to convenient chain hotels, the Sugar House district also has quite a few charming Airbnbs and VRBOs.

Two young women holding e-bikes smile at the camera on a sun-drenched street in Salt Lake City

The Avenues

Best for a relaxed local vibe.

The Avenues are divided into the Avenues Proper, Upper Avenues and Lower Avenues. This residential neighborhood is quiet and quirky with a slow-paced, outdoorsy vibe.

The Upper Avenues are a gateway to the Wasatch Mountains with plenty of outdoor activities – nearby trailheads lead to breathtaking views, and the Northcrest Swim Club and the I-Street BMX Bike Park provide other ways to stay active.

The Avenues Proper area is a grid-designed neighborhood that is easy to navigate and home to hip residents and artisan restaurants and shops. Don’t feel like walking? Rent an e-bike to cruise the hood. Take a ride through Lindsey Gardens Park or take in the city views at Salt Lake City Cemetery.

The grid continues in the Lower Avenues where there are more amenities, eateries, and sightseeing opportunities. Gawk at the ornate Cathedral of the Madeleine built in 1909, sneak a peek at the opulent Governor’s Mansion, and dine at any number of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. There aren't a huge amount of accommodation options in this neighborhood, although Avenues Hostel is a friendly budget option. Downtown is within walking distance and has plenty of hotels to choose from.

Top Things to Do in Salt Lake City

Bonus activities in salt lake city, utah, day trips from salt lake city, faqs on things to do in salt lake city, final thoughts.

There’s an unnaturally wide variety of things to do in Salt Lake City. If you’re visiting Utah for the first time, you’re going to need a hand. Voila the hand…

1. Dip a Toe in the Great Salt Lake

visit salt lake city reddit

It is pretty essential Salt Lake City courtesy to visit the Great Salt Lake. If you’re visiting the USA , it is right up there with the amazing Utah national parks! The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake west of the Mississippi River, measuring a gigantic 1700 square miles. You can bob in it. If you wanna.

  • Rating : All ages
  • Cost : Free to $$
  • My Personal Opinion : This is one of the most bizarre spectacles ever. Worth seeing for sure. 8/8 would rate.

The evaporation of water leaves behind chunky salt deposits, since the water has roughly 10 times as much salt as the Ocean. The lake is a favourite with locals as it offers prime fishing, hiking, and picnicking spots. The Great Salt Lake is unmissable and is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Salt Lake City.

2. Explore the Mormon Sensationalism of Temple Square

visit salt lake city reddit

Encompassing a startling 35-acre plaza, the term “Temple Square” designates the frank plethora of attractions which are connected to the Mormons. Including the surprisingly lavish Salt Lake Temple, Assembly Hall and Tabernacle, this square offers free tours to travellers, which even offer interest to persons of non or alternative religion.

  • Rating : All Ages
  • Cost : Free
  • My Personal Opinion : This is a must-do! Temple Square includes a large portion of the city’s top attractions!

Temple Square has its own website, and they often put on various musical events (including by the famous Tabernacle Choir). As it’s in the city centre, you can easily refresh yourself, and it is pleasant to pass a good portion of the day here. There are a great number of awesome places to stay nearby too!

3. Discover the Mormom Birthplace at the “This is the Place Monument”

Visit the This is the Place Monument in Salt Lake City.

The “This is the Place Monument” is where to visit if you want to learn about the history of the Mormon faith and its charismatic founder Brigham Young. It might even be the most important landmark in all of Salt Lake Valley.

He trekked across the desert with his 1300 followers, until he recognized this valley from his vision. “This is the place!” he exclaimed. There’s now a monument on the exact spot.

  • My Personal Opinion : The birthplace of the Mormons!! Outstanding if you’re into the frankly balmy history of the Mormons…

Nearby the monument is the Old Desert Village which replicates the lifestyle of those early Mormons. There are streets, houses, an inn, and a farmhouse that is populated by actors who bring history to life.

4. Stroll through Red Butte Botanical Garden

Stroll arond the Red Butt Botanical Garden in Salt Lake City.

Red Butte Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful places to see in Salt Lake City. It’s on the grounds of the University of Utah and is a great place to relax.

  • My Personal Opinion : These gardens are sensationally pretty, and stretch for miles! If you’re looking for an easy day, don’t hesitate. Kids may get a little bored if otherwise unoccupied.

There are gorgeous landscaped gardens with marble fountains and tranquil walking paths. The Red Butte Garden has various sections dedicated to different ecosystems and regularly hosts concerts.

5. Listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Visit the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City and listen to the choir.

The Mormon Tabernacle is one of the most striking Salt Lake City points of interest, thanks to its massive silver dome! It’s also the home of the world-famous Tabernacle Choir , the perfect SLC date!

  • My Personal Opinion : Again, Mormon stuff. The choir is worth seeing, so plan your trip accordingly if that’s something you fancy seeing!

You can always pop into the Tabernacle to explore but it’s better if you come for a concert. There are concerts on Sunday mornings and free rehearsals on Thursday evenings. The grand organ is also featured in a recital on Saturdays!

6. Enjoy the sensational sunsets of Ensign Peak Nature Park

visit salt lake city reddit

Following the Ensign Peak Trail is a top way to get some exercise, and brilliant city views over the Salt Lake Valley! This path also links up with the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (for those of a hiking persuasion). It’s pretty sensational that panoramic views are so close to downtown Salt Lake City.

  • My Personal Opinion : Why not go at sunset to capture that Instagrammable shot? The trail is only a mile in either direction…

Pack your best hiking boots and embark on a hiking trail that is simultaneously part of an urban surrounding, and part of some of the most natural nature you can encounter. Lots of animals and birds can be spotted on the trail, so don’t be surprised if you catch some phantom sounds!

7. Transformational Breath & Ice Bath Workshop

visit salt lake city reddit

Do you fancy connecting with your true self whilst on holiday? Then you will want to cease that deliciously warm shower and climb into a bathtub filled with ice cubes. Yes. That and a load of genuinely nice feeling breathing exercises. What better way to spend your time in Salt Lake City than in the bath?

  • Rating : 16+
  • My Personal Opinion : If you want a unique experience, there is no experience more refreshing…

Definitely a top thing to do in Salt Lake City. The host is experienced, and you might find a deep part of you does connect with what he’s saying. Anyway, it’ll be relaxing, enjoyable, and entirely new! Great welcome gift maybe?

8. Glide the Unreal Bonneville Salt Flats

girl standing on salt flats at sunset in utah

One of the most unusual things to do in Salt Lake City today is to take a trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats. This is a unique natural formation that spans 30,000 acres! Bonneville Speedway has so much salt it looks like a frozen lake layered with snow!

  • My Personal Opinion : Along the same lines as the great lake, if you want to see something big, do it!

Once a year, there’s even a vehicle race along this slippery terrain that draws thrill-seekers from all over. If that’s not for you, then visit the rest stop. This area offers spectacular views of the salt flats and you can walk on the salt, a strange experience in itself!

9. Marvel at Salt Lake Temple

Flagship temple of Mormons in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake Temple is the flagship place of worship for Mormons around the world and is certainly one of the most interesting cultural things to see in Utah .

  • My Personal Opinion : This is the centre of Mormon culture. If you haven’t been here, have you been to Salt Lake City?

The temple was opened in 1893 and is considered to be sacred. Therefore, only congregation members are allowed to enter the church, though visitors can still tour the gorgeous grounds and admire the impressive facade.

Look out for the All-Seeing Eye of God on the central tower, as well as the Gilded Angel Statue!

10. Kick up Powder at Brighton Resort

visit salt lake city reddit

Less than 2 hours away from Downtown Salt Lake City you can throw on a snow jacket and send it down some outrageously steep slopes. Whether you’re learning to ski or have it in the back pocket, one of Salt Lake City’s best features is its proximity to professional-grade slopes, so make the most of it!

  • Rating : All Ages (maybe 3+?)
  • My Personal Opinion : I love skiing. You could not keep me away.

The slopes are an excellent active thing to do, so if the kids are really rubbing you up the wrong way, just send them down an ice hill. It’ll cheer them up. I believe skiing is good for the soul, and realistically this should be the top attraction in Salt Lake City. The Brighton Resort is the cheapest slope (for your budget needs…), if you want quality, head to the Solitude Mountain Resort.

What’s that? Your appetite is insatiable and you can’t get enough? No worries. I will quickly sort that out with these super legendary bonus things to do in Salt Lake City…

Picnic in Liberty Park

Walk around and have a picnic at the Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

With 80 acres of green land, Liberty Park is the second-largest park in Salt Lake City! This lush oasis is also the perfect spot for a picnic date.

Many of the trees are hundreds of years old and have grown enormous, providing shade and backrests for a comfortable afternoon. Try to find a spot near the lake where you can watch the ducks go about their family lives. The park is also a great spot for walking.

Trace your Family History at the Family History Library

Trace your genes at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

The Family History Library is home to millions of genealogical records for around three billion people. This makes it the largest such facility in the world and one of the most mind-blowing places to visit in Salt Lake City — for free!

The library encourages you to trace your own family history and the staff is friendly and eager to help you do so. If you have written records of your family ancestors, bring them along to help speed up the process.

The Deuel family lived in the log house from 1847 to 1848, making it one of the oldest intact structures remaining in Salt Lake City. It still houses the original pioneer interior, including a cast-iron stove. Budget backpackers will also love that this attraction is free!

Ghosthunting probably isn’t what you expect from downtown Salt Lake City sightseeing but it is lots of fun (and just a bit spooky)!

Rio Grande Train Depot is supposedly one of the most haunted spots in town, and it’s home to “The Purple Lady” who you can spot near the cafe. Legend has it that she was killed trying to retrieve her engagement ring from the train tracks.

Salt Lake City, Utah, is a hub of activity for locals and visitors alike. With so many options for things to do, it can be easy to overlook some of the city’s lesser-known gems. One such gem is the Gilgal Sculpture Garden, a unique outdoor art exhibit that’s worth a visit.

Located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a serene park filled with unusual sculptures and hidden treasures. But what makes this garden so interesting is its history. The sculptures were created by Thomas Battersby Child Jr., a local LDS church bishop and eccentric artist. He began creating these sculptures in his backyard during the 1940s and continued to add to them until his death in 1963.

The sculptures themselves are a mix of artistic styles and religious imagery, with many of them depicting biblical scenes or other religious symbols. But there are also some unexpected pieces, like a sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS church, and a statue of a woman peering into a crystal ball.

As visitors explore the garden, they’ll notice a number of oddities that set it apart from other parks. There are footprints engraved in the concrete walkways, for example, and an odd stone structure that looks like a giant beehive. The most prominent feature, however, is a large monument of a man’s head with a fish emerging from his mouth. This sculpture has become the park’s unofficial mascot and is a popular spot for photos.

One of the best things about the Gilgal Sculpture Garden is that it’s completely free to visit. It’s also a nice break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Salt Lake City and is a great spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Where to Stay in Salt Lake City

Without doubt, the best spot to stay in Salt Lake City is in the downtown area. A lot of downtown districts around the United States may price out budget travelers, but that’s not the case here.

Travelers will enjoy the full spectrum of budget, mid-range and luxury hotels all within a central area. From your accommodation, you will be able to visit many of the best things to do in Salt Lake City, such as Temple Square and the State Capitol.

Other options include the area around Salt Lake City Airport. Only a ten-minute drive from downtown, you will find several budget accommodations for those traveling on a shoestring.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Salt Lake City

The best time to visit Salt Lake City is in the fall. Temperatures are milder than the summer, yet warmer than the spring. Not as busy as the summer, fall comes with less tourist traffic, more time to explore and cooler temperatures for venturing into the surrounding mountains.

While it gets cold during the winter, it is worth braving the sometimes bitter conditions for the chance to experience some of the best skiing in the USA.

Summer, like in many cities, is peak tourist season. But for good reason, as the snow has melted and the muddy paths have dried up, leaving you with epic hiking, biking and days by the lake.

Day One: Temples, Choirs, and Liberty Park

Start off your three days in Salt Lake City with a trip to the most iconic attraction in town. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Temple Square is the global headquarters for the church, otherwise known as Mormons.

Spanning 35 acres, Temple Square transcends being a purely religious experience. The beautiful grounds, jaw dropping architecture and the renowned Tabernacle Choir are just some of the reasons this is the case.

Located downtown, the square is easy to access and you’ll likely have gorgeous views of the buildings long before you enter the grounds. The chief attraction of Temple Square is the Salt Lake Temple.

Following a four-decade construction process, the temple finally opened in 1893 and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. When the temple opened, it signalled the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy that the Lord’s house would be created on the top of the mountains.

The Salt Lake City Temple is sacred for the members of the church and isn’t open for tours, however the most memorable aspect is the architecture. Built from quartz monzonite found in the regions surrounding the city, the stunning temple comes with six spires stemming from the roof. Each spire features a statue of the angel Moroni.

Walk around the Salt Lake City Temple for great insight into the incredible design. To see the interior, you can view the to-scale model of the temple at the South Visitor’s Center.

One of the best ways to experience Temple Square is on a guided walking tour . Explore the history behind the square’s creation along with the manicured gardens that help make it such a special place.

Now that you have seen the temple and explore the hallowed grounds along the way, step into the Church History Museum . Featuring interactive exhibits, hundreds of artifacts and a collection of worldwide art, the museum tells the fascinating story of Mormon heritage and culture.

Art exhibits rotate throughout the year. Previous art installations have spanned back centuries, telling the pioneer stories in conjunction with the history of Mormon culture in Utah.

Some highlights that are on show year round include the historic 168-year-old log home and a spacious theater showcasing various films. The museum also presents Living History Days, giving you the chance to step back in time and envision local life in the 19 th century.

Finish up your time in Temple Square by witnessing the famed Tabernacle Choir. The choir offers one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in Salt Lake City. The stunning harmonies and voices of the 360-strong choir will follow you throughout your time in the city.

Having performed all over the world, the Tabernacle Choir performs on Sunday mornings in the historic Tabernacle building. But if you don’t catch them that day, you can watch their rehearsals on Thursday evenings.

The Tabernacle Building is worth seeing, even if you aren’t catching the choir perform. The memorable building has 44 individual sandstone pillars holding up the domed roof. On any given Sunday, 6000 guests arrive to watch the amazing singers go to work.

Next up on your day one adventures in Salt Lake City is Liberty Park. Skip lunch if you can and pack yourself a picnic to enjoy in one of the best green spaces in the city.

Liberty Park is the second-largest in the city and offers the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll, especially after such a busy morning. Liberty Park comes with beautiful scenery, with leafy trees that are hundreds of years old and the large Liberty Park Pond.

One of the main reasons the park is also on the National Registry of Historic Places is because of the Chase Mill. As Salt Lake City’s oldest commercial building, the mill helped the surrounding communities stave off famine during the 1850s.

Learn more about the park’s history, along with traditional art by Utah’s indigenous peoples at the Chase Museum.

For something a little more active, you can explore the aviary botanical gardens, play some tennis or even try your hand at volleyball.

Where to Eat on Day One in Salt Lake City

For lunch head to Caputo’s Market & Deli for a simple yet delicious eats that will power your afternoon. Their specialty sandwich, the Caputo comes with fresh prosciutto, salami, mortadella, dipped in olive oil and balsamic on a toasted Italian roll. Yes, please!

On night one, enjoy some amazing Italian at Valter’s Osteria. Treat yourself with a bit of a splurge at one of the top restaurants in the city. Thankfully, the high-end dining matches the price tag. If you’re stuck on what to order, try the lasagna complete with Valter’s mother’s special meat sauce.

Day Two: Museums, Olympic Park, and a Drive-in Theater

After a scrumptious breakfast, it’s time to head to the Natural History Museum of Utah. One of the top things to do in Salt Lake City, the museum grants amazing insight into the rich history of the Beehive State, from its days as a pioneer town through to the current era.

Beyond human history, Utah has a fascinating geological past. The ten year-round exhibits allow you to interact and learn about 500 million years of geography in the region, including the formation and history of the Great Salt Lake.

The museum also has a heavy focus on prehistoric communities and Utah’s Native American nations, showcasing art and artifacts while educating guests about the local heritage.

After a morning learning about Utah’s history, both human and natural, it’s time to venture 30 minutes out of Salt Lake City to Utah Olympic Park. Within the famed Park City, the Utah Olympic Park was home to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. The park remains an important training site for US Winter Olympic athletes.

Whether you have arrived in the winter months or during the summer, there is always so much to do. Skiing and snowboarding are two of the most common activities to do from December until April. The long ski-season and epic powder makes Park City one of the top places to shred in the United States.

visit salt lake city reddit

However, during the summer, the action doesn’t slow down. You will find plenty of adrenalin-stoking action all throughout the warmer months. The top attraction at Olympic Park is the Summer Comet Bobsled. The signature experience allows you the chance to bobsled down the Olympic track at breakneck speeds. Don’t worry, they switched your skates for wheels and leave the driving to an expert pilot.

The ride only lasts a minute, but with speeds of up to 60 miles p/h, it promises to be an unforgettable time.

For more opportunities to get the heart racing and test your bravery, you can try your hand at extreme tubing. Ride down the plastic surface on an enormous tube where you can reach speeds of up to 50mph. Families will also love the chance to explore the rope courses, go ziplining across the mountains or ride down the hill on the exciting self-controlled Alpine Slide.

Experience unlimited access to all these attractions and more thanks to the Summer Gold Pass .

Nothing beats free activities, however, and Olympic Park has those in abundance. The world-class hiking and biking trails come free of charge and offer some of the most inspiring views in the areas around Salt Lake City.

One of the top mountain biking trails is the Iron Bill Trail. The trail comes with a big climb from the base of the Olympic Parkway to the peak of a ski jump. Not to worry, you are well-rewarded with scenic vistas at the top before a riveting ride down.

For hikers it doesn’t get any better than the Jennis Trail. At 5.1 miles long (one-way) the trail begins at Park City Mountain Resort and soars up to the panoramic views at the top of the Payday Lift.

To save on energy, make all the hiking downhill by riding up the Payday Lift to the top before walking down to the base.

You could spend all day at Olympic Park and Park City. But with the evening now here, we have one last treat, the Redwood Drive-in Movie Theatre .

In operation since 1948, through the peak drive-in cinema era to the present day of binge watching on Netflix, the Redwood is a must-visit Salt Lake City attraction. The $10 ticket grants you access to two films for the price of one.

Kick back in your car sync up the radio and enjoy the flick among dozens of other cars. As the stars twinkle under the clear Utah sky, this classic experience is a perfect way to end an epic day.

Where to Eat

With such a busy day ahead, it’s only right that you begin at Salt Lake City’s best breakfast spot, Sweet Lake Biscuits and Limeade. What started out as a stand at the local farmers’ market is now a citywide hit. Try the homemade biscuit with chicken, egg, bacon, gravy and more for a meal that will send you right to heaven.

When it comes to eating lunch in Park City, one of the top choices is Nosh. Serving unpretentious Mediterranean food, expect a burst of flavor, crispy felafels, without the typical resort pricing. Be in and out, ready to experience more of the mountain.

Celebrate the day’s escapades at Handle Salt Lake. Serving impressive New America cuisine, HSL uses locally sourced produce and a variety of seasonal dishes that always hit the spot. Hearty without breaking the bank, this is a top spot for dinner in Salt Lake City.

Day Three: Salt Lakes, Hikes, and the Capitol

Start your final day in Salt Lake City by exploring the lake that gave the city its name. Great Salt Lake is the largest salt lake not just in America but in the entire western hemisphere. As a remnant of the enormous Lake Bonneville, it’s hard to imagine that the lake was once much bigger.

While not as salty as the Dead Sea (it comes close), it is still easy to float in the water. The shallow depths of the lake, however, mean it can quickly stir up. Nevertheless, there are many ways to enjoy the lake. One of them is to journey to Jordanelle Rentals and choose between one of the several on-water experiences. Hire kayaks and SUPs to explore the lake peacefully, or jump on your very own jet ski and zoom around. Better yet, if you are in a group, why not hire an entire boat? Enjoy wakeboarding or simply kicking back with a rod in hand and try to catch lunch.

visit salt lake city reddit

After a morning of adventures on the water, put on your hiking boots and trek along some of the local trails. You will have the chance to spot local wildlife and enjoy some fantastic bird watching. One of the top trails to complete is the trek to the top of Ensign Peak.

From the summit, you will be able to see the lake in all its glory along with the Salt Lake City Skyline. If you want to experience an incredible local sunset, find time to hike to the summit on day one or two to see the colorful evening sky reflect off Great Salt Lake.

visit salt lake city reddit

Next up, return to downtown Salt Lake City and visit the Capitol Building. The imposing structure is one of the top things to do in Salt Lake City. The beautiful building comes surrounded with lush green grounds and is a magnificent spot to enjoy an afternoon picnic. If you’re around in spring, be sure to explore the rows of blooming cherry blossoms.

The Capitol’s interior is open to visitors who can explore the Golden Room along with a series of prominent galleries. The rotating exhibits focus on local artists who help tell the tale of the city, the culture and the landscape.

To find up your time in Salt Lake City, head to the one of the top breweries in town, the Fisher Brewing Company. Founded in 1884 it what was once an old mechanical shop, the brewery has been handed down through the generations and is now employee-owned. Pouring fine ales and lagers complemented by a rotation of mouthwatering food trucks, there’s no better place to toast to your Salt Lake City adventure than right here.

If you’re sad about leaving Salt Lake City, breakfast at Roots Cafe will help soothe you greatly. The tasty and sweet mixed berry crepes will immediately put a smile on your face, but leave room for the generous buckwheat pancakes.

If you don’t picnic at the Capitol, join the line at Pretty Bird Chicken. The spicy chicken has quickly become a local favorite. Served on a butter bun, with slaw pickles and the amazing secret sauce, this is one chicken sandwich that’s worth the wait. (Don’t worry, the line goes fast!)

Final Thoughts

Providing the goods all year long, Salt Lake City is an underrated destination. Temple Square is one of the more unique attractions in the United States and is complemented by a series of wonderful museums and galleries.

For those that love the outdoors, not only will you have access to some insane winter powder, but the mountains offer family-friendly and challenging hikes in the summer.

If you plan on exploring Utah, it pays to spend three days in Salt Lake City to appreciate all you will discover on your journey.

At the end of National Nurses Week, 100,000 healthcare workers will be randomly selected to get an email asking them to verify their employment status via ID.me. Those who successfully verify that within 48 hours will get a free burrito e-card.

Customers can get in on the action, too, by purchasing limited-edition Chipotle Healthcare Heroes E-Gift Cards online; 10% of the proceeds from the gift card purchases will be donated to the American Nurses Foundation. And throughout the month of May, you can round up your online or app orders to the nearest dollar amount. 100% of those proceeds will go to the foundation.

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.
