Circle of Fire Helicopter Tour – Hilo

Difficulty rating, minimum age, activity time.

7:30 AM to 3:45 PM

Tour Duration

What's included, description.

Perspective is everything - and the only way to fully appreciate the immensity and power of the Big Island’s volcanoes is from the air. Pele’s Volcanoes Adventure is a fifty minute, fully narrated, helicopter tour that will fly you over Volcanoes National Park - home to both Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

aerial view from a helicopter tour from hilo

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. You will be flown over Halema’uma’u Crater, which is located within the main caldera at Kilauea’s summit. (Halema’uma’u is also the legendary home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess and creator of these volcanic landscapes.) You will also be flown over Iki Crater, which is located just outside the volcano’s main caldera.

(Witnessing lava flows or steam vents from above these two craters is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but please keep in mind that these sightings can not be guaranteed as conditions in the craters are ever changing).

aerial view of Volcanoes National Park from a helicopter tour departing from hilo

Mauna Loa is the world’s largest active volcano. It reaches from five miles below the ocean floor to 13,000 feet above sea level at its summit, and it encompasses nearly half of the island of Hawaii. Weather permitting, you’ll be flown over the base of this massive volcano and be shown the remnants of its most recent eruption (November 2022).

While the volcanoes are the main focus of this tour, you’ll also enjoy a bird’s eye view of Hilo and the Puna district. Puna is largely undeveloped due to the volcanic activity in the area and is known for its rugged terrain, lush rainforests, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. This abundance of natural beauty makes for a stunning backdrop, resulting in a scenic flight that is spectacular from start to finish.

You’ll be flying in an Airbus EcoStar or A-Star helicopter, which are state-of-the-art helicopters specifically designed for the tourism industry. When passenger comfort and safety are the priorities, the end result is a smooth ride, cozy seats, and doors and windows that are designed so that everyone aboard gets a good view - and doors are left on for added safety. .

This is a must when visiting the Big Island. Our B&B had a book "HAWAII THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED The Ultimate Guidebook" and it described in detail how to go about this excursion. Upon reaching the Visitor Center, a volunteer gave us a pamphlet Nd he was very helpful recommending what not to miss for the duration we planned to spend. Thumbs up to how this park designed parking and restrooms around the craters and volcano sites making it easy for short walks for those who didn't plan to hike especially on a rainy, cold day. Definitely recommend reading about it first to tackle all interesting points.

It was great timing that we happened to be in Hilo when the volcano was erupting as it literally stopped the day after we visited. Wanting to get the full experience, we decided to go closer to evening so we can see it with the contrast once the sun went down. It was beautiful and although I didn't get a picture of it, we met a local that showed us one captured by her friend that looked like the image of Pele. Since we saw it from the parking lot overlook, it was in the distance, but it was still a spectacular sight especially once it got darker. Do note that it is not warm or hot up here and in fact gets quite windy so bundle up and don't show up in shorts and a t-shirt and bring snacks or food. Nothing beats seeing the lava flow from the water, but this is still memorable.

Visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was one of the main reasons we decided to come to the Big Island on our trip (National Park #22!). This park is so incredible that it was 100% worth it. There is so many different things to do and see here that I would definitely plan your trip in advance to make sure you can hit all the different things you want to experience - there are some good hiking trails that I wish we could've included. If you're staying in Kona, you'll definitely need either a rental car or to book a tour to get to the park and it's a good 1.5 hour drive (as the quickest estimate). They have a wonderful visitor center here - lots of information about the park, a small but nice bookstore, and a beautiful little art center/shop. They also have a water bottle refill station and nice bathrooms, so definitely worth a stop when you enter the park. The Kilauea Overlook is a must-stop on any visit to the park. You will get an absolutely beautiful view of Kilauea. We came the day after a major storm, so it was still super overcast and cloudy, but still a beautiful view despite there being no lava activity while we were there. Try to stick to the trails and stay away from edges just to be safe. The nearby Steam Vents are also a fun stop to see this natural phenomenon. It was also cold while we were there, so it gave us a little warm-up while we experienced them! The Volcano House is also a fun stop - this historic hotel was initially built in 1846 and has a couple restaurants, a little coffee stand, a couple nice gift shops, a pressed penny machine, and beautiful outdoor views of Kilauea as well as nature walks. Nice stop for a rest, a drink, or a bite to eat. Next stop was the Chain of Craters Road - such a fun drive to see a bunch of craters throughout the park. We stopped at the Luamanu Crater and the Pauahi Crater. Luamanu is a quick stop to take a peek, but the Pauahi is definitely worth the little walk to see the landscape and take in the full magnificence of the crater. Our last stop was at the Thurston Lava Tube. Definitely wanted to stop here but wasn't quite sure what to expect - exceeded all my expectations. It's a short hike uphill to the tube and then a short hike back down once you've finished the walk inside - about 0.4 miles roundtrip. It's so beautiful and with the lighting, it really gives it an ethereal feel. Visiting it after dark is the way to go. Overall, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is truly magnificent and completely worth a visit when visiting Hawai'i.

This is a world class park with tons to offer. It's always open so you can drive in at any time. If you do that before or after hours then you won't be charged an entry fee at the entry ranger station. The visitor center has ab exhibit hall and souvenir shop but parking fills up quickly. There's an art gallery and small trail to steam vents starting from that parking lot. The overlooks at Kiluea fill first so arrive early and get there before 10 am when the tour busses arrive. Then go across the top of the park to the lava tubes and get one of the few parking spots near that trail head. You can also use that spot to hike down into the crater. Skip the sea arch and spend more time hiking around the main crater.

No volcano eruptions or lava flows on our visit, but still an enjoyable time. And another National Park under my belt! We did see hula dancers, steam pits, rain forests and a lava tube to hike down to, and huff it through( quite a respiratory attack incident for me getting to and through that lava tube ). Fortunately I carried an inhaler with me. Hawaii also has the best tour buses to get you around in, in the entire South Pacific; by far.

The Park is fantastic!!! Even though my partner and i wasn't able to hike all of the trails (in one day), enjoying the beautiful nature on a good weather day was amazing enough. Not to mention, Kīlauea has been erupting!!! What an awesome experience to see. At the entrance of the park, you receive a map for all of the trails and legends of where things are located. There are some areas for bathrooms, picnic tables, a camping site, trails, etc. around the park. This is my first time flying to one of the sister islands (i know, finally yeah) and big island was a trip! We came to the park on September 23rd. Note: September 23 is a "national publics lands day" meaning that the national parks across the US have (or should have) free entrance! For one personal vehicle, you would pay $30 to park. Each lot before you start your journey has a trash bin and a porta-potty. Note: make sure you have PPE just in case! The inside is quite huge which could probably fit a stroller in there + TP & hand sanitizer inside the portable was included. We mainly hike Kīlauea iki to see the crater. It's not as hard as you think it might be. It was a great hike! The hike scenery changes as you shortly pass through a forest feel, through some sinkholes, a -- what i call a "black desert", and then through another forest, then rock bottom, literally. Will definitely come here again and hike the rest of the trails Preferably on a holiday because all holidays have free entrance to the park! Their website about the park is super informational too! High note: wear sunscreen even if it might be cloudy!

HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK IS AMAZING DURING ERUPTIONS ========================================================== I was on the Big Island visiting my sister from June 13, 2023 to June 21, 2023 and I really wanted to go up to Kilauea at some point to see the lava flow. I didn't really want to drive by myself, but my sister wanted to go to Hilo to the Farmer's Market and lunch on Father's Day. We decided to take the southern route back to Kona and stopped by Hawai'i Volcanoes Park on the way back. We decided that if it was busy we wouldn't pay to enter the park, but it was not busy and the Park Ranger at the entrance told us there was plenty of parking which was great. She also told us we could see the flow from the Volcano House, so I was ecstatic. We parked right by the Visitor Center and walked over to the Volcano House to the rim and the view was great. Even during the day. I could have stayed there for hours, but my sister can only handle so much touristy stuff. Two days later the flow stopped. If one of the volcanoes in the park is erupting I would highly recommend visiting. It is pretty cool.

This National Park is magnificent and offers many things to see and do related to the volcanoes. The central sight is the the Hale Ma'uma'u crater of Kilauea, which has several viewing points around it, including the Kilauea Overlook and Uekahuna Overlook on the north side, reachable by car to the parking lot, or by a walk on the trail on the crater rim from the Volcano House Hotel. There is a visitor centre, the hotel with restaurants, and other places to stay at the old Kilauea Military Camp. There are steam vents and lava tubes to explore, the Kilauea Iki crater with a hike across it,other trails to the south, the Chain of Craters Road going to the Holei Sea Arch, and more. A thorough exploration would take a few days. We stayed two nights here on this trip. We explored the steam vents, walked around the crater to the Kilauea and Uekahuna Overlooks, explored the Chain of Craters Road and walked out to the petroglyphs and the sea arch.

This was my wife and I first visit to Hawaii. We stayed 7 days on Kona. Anyway you have to see the Volcaneo National Park. Pictures really do not capture what you actually see, it is immense. Be prepared to spend at a minimum1/2 day and then you will not see maybe the other 60%. Will we return, probably not but it was a bucket list experience e.

volcano tour in hilo hawaii

Make a stop first at the visitor center if you want a map or to look at their recommendations of what is easy, medium, and hard. We paid $30 per car to enter. We visited the Kilauea overlook, steam vents, Thurston Lava tubes, and lastly drove the Chain of Craters road to see the sea arches. We skipped all the hiking trails because we had two very young toddlers, but we had a wonderful time here still. The chain of craters drive was probably my favorite because it was very scenic and left us in awe, especially when we reached the sea arches at the end. We will definitely be back in the future, when our kids can actually hike with us.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).

Hawai‘i Police Department honors fallen officers during National Police Week

The men and women who serve the Big Island as law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every time they go to work to make sure their community is safe.

Unfortunately, some of them don’t make it home.

The public is invited to show support for law enforcement and honor officers killed or disabled in the line of duty throughout this week as the Hawai‘i Police Department observes National Police Week.

U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1962 proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls in as National Police Week.

Big Island police hosted a Police Week ceremony Monday at the Hilo police station and will conduct another at 11 a.m. Friday at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center in Kailua-Kona. The West Hawai‘i event is open to the public and will include pre-ceremony entertainment.

Both ceremonies pay tribute to officers from Hawai‘i County who gave their lives in service to their community. They are:

  • Officer Manuel Cadinha, who gave his life in 1918.
  • Officer William “Red” Oili, who gave his life in 1936.
  • Officer Ronald “Shige” Jitchaku, who gave his life in 1990.
  • Officer Kenneth Keliipio, who gave his life in 1997.
  • Park Ranger Steve Makuakane-Jarrell, who gave his life in 1999.
  • Officer Bronson Kaimana Kaliloa, who was killed in the line of duty on July 18, 2018.
  • Police Captain T. Simeona, who was killed in the line of duty on September 25, 1890.

Hilo Police Officer Michol Octobre, who died Dec. 8, 1916, in a shootout in Kalopa with a suspected serial killer, was added to the Ka Malu Aloha police memorial wall outside the Hilo police station during Monday’s ceremony.

Octobre, undercover as a laborer, embarked on a dangerous mission to locate the suspect Maxime Bondad. The officer’s work led to locating Bondad’s suspected hiding place.

With Deputy Sheriff Rickard by his side, Octobre bravely ascended the Kalopa hillside. Despite the risk, he attempted a peaceful resolution by calling out to Bondad.

His courageous act went tragically unanswered when a single gunshot shattered the quiet. Bondad, who was hiding in the brush, shot and fatally wounded Octobre. Officers returned gunfire and killed Bondad where he hid.

Members of the public can visit the memoiral wall in Hilo and attend station tours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Hilo and Kona police stations. Call Sgt. Amy Omaya at 808-961-2264 to schedule an appointment.

Regulating Big Island bike tours: Bill would require yearly registration, restrictions on some public roads

volcano tour in hilo hawaii

Kelsey Walling/Tribune-Herald An electric bike tour group starts their excursion on Dec. 30 at the Kilauea Overlook in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

What began as an effort to reduce bike traffic on specific West Hawaii roads has become a proposed series of regulations upon bike tour operators throughout the Big Island.

In January, Kohala Councilwoman Cindy Evans introduced to a County Council committee a measure that would prohibit bicycle tour operators from sending tour groups down Kohala Mountain Road and a roughly eight-mile stretch of Akoni Pule Highway between Kohala Mountain Road and Pololu Valley Lookout.

At the time, Evans said the roads are narrow and have very reduced sightlines, which makes them particularly unsafe for large groups of bikers — drivers have complained to her of rounding a blind corner to find a group of a dozen cyclists taking up half the roadway.

Almost half a year later, however, the proposal has morphed into something quite different. After several committee meetings’ worth of tinkering, the measure now adds a section to the Hawaii County Code establishing regulations upon commercial bike tour operators islandwide.

Puna Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz drafted the amendments that so completely changed the bill, and thanked Evans at Wednesday’s Council meeting for her “generous latitude” for allowing such changes.

As written, Kierkiewicz’s amended bill would require commercial bike tour operators to register with the County annually — on Wednesday, Kierkiewicz suggested registration fees of $500 for the first year and $250 for subsequent years — and would authorize the county to restrict tour operators from operating on public roads where bike tours would be considered “a threat of public safety.”

While the bill leaves such a determination of road safety up to the interpretation of agencies such as the Department of Public Works, the Hawaii Police Department and the state Department of Transporation, it suggests that factors such as narrow pavement widths, reduced shoulder size, limited sightlines, steep grades, narrow bridges or otherwise “winding or hilly terrain” could all be considered unsafe road conditions.

Any tour operator that violates the terms of the bill — whether by operating on a restricted road or by not registering — would be fined $500 for a first offense and at least $1,000 per bicycle for any subsequent offense within a year of the first offense.

Kierkiewicz introduced her amendments at a May 1 council meeting, where she said the changes are an effort to allay concerns about how the county could justify restricting a road to bike tours. When the Council identifies a problematic road, it will consult with the leaders of managing agencies to confirm if those roads are unsafe for groups of cyclists.

On Wednesday, DPW Director Steve Pause said there is “plenty of data” and traffic manuals to make data-driven decisions about any given road. He and Kierkiewicz agreed upon a 45-day analysis period for officials to determine the safety of a given road.

“There’s a lot of roads where you have inches to a foot of space between the lines,” Pause said, adding that signage could be added to designated roads after a county decision.

Council members supported the amended bill, with Evans calling it “such a better bill” than her initial proposal, and praised her fellows for their feedback allowing it to be reshaped in a collaborative way.

While there was minimal testimony on the measure, two residents submitted letters expressing doubts. Jon Hayes wrote that the bill could be used to ban cycling on public roads altogether.

“The way it is worded currently could be interpreted as anyone using an app or a map could be considered part of a tour,” Hayes wrote.

Kailua-Kona resident Jon Luft wrote that the bill has inadequate definitions of the possible hazards of unsafe roads — “winding or hilly terrain,” for example, “could apply to nearly all roadways on Hawaii Island,” he wrote — and urged more data-driven regulations instead of arbitrary decisions by department heads.

More changes are in store for the measure, as Kierkiewicz said she wants to continue to improve the bill’s language before it goes to final reading before the council. She moved Wednesday to postpone the measure until a later session to allow for those changes, to which the council unanimously agreed.
