7 of the Best Swimming Holes in & Around Austin

There’s no denying it: summer is sizzling in Austin. But luckily, Mother Nature helps out with a number of splashy swimming holes that offer a fun way to cool off. Shake the summer heat at some of the best swimming holes found in and around Austin.

Please note that swimming is not always guaranteed and may be subject to change due to environmental factors. Please check each location's website for current information on swimming conditions.

Drive 45 minutes south of Austin to reach the glorious Blue Hole , located just outside of Wimberley. The crystal-clear waters of Blue Hole stay an ideal 75 degrees all year-round, and are shaded by towering cypress trees. Manicured waterside lawns are the perfect place to spread out a blanket and crack open your cooler. Rope swings hanging from the trees complete the quintessential water hole experience.

Barton Creek Greenbelt

The Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls areas of the Barton Creek Greenbelt are hidden local secrets. It’s about a half-mile hike on a well-defined trail to reach Twin Falls from the closest entrance. But once you arrive, you’ll be treated to relaxing shallow stream waters, although there are plenty of rocky areas for adventurous climbing and exploring the falls. Hike a mile further and you’ll reach Sculpture Falls, another hidden gem watering hole.

Trail access is open and Greenbelt swimming is subject to current water levels. Swim at your own risk.

Jacob's Well Natural Area

Swim in an artesian spring just 40 minutes outside of Austin at Jacob's Well Natural Area . The cool, clear water is surrounded by rocky ledges and shady trees, creating a picture-perfect swimming hole. Jacob’s Well is the second-largest fully submerged cave in Texas, and the spring releases thousands of gallons of water a day, eventually feeding into the Blanco River.

Limited activities such as hiking are currently available at Jacob's Well, although swimming is NOT currently allowed. Please see their website for more details.

Krause Springs

Krause Springs , a well-loved swimming and camping site, is located in Spicewood, just 30 miles west of Austin in beautiful Texas Hill Country. The friendly Krause family has privately owned the site for more than 50 years. Spend the day swimming in its 32 springs, as well as natural and manmade pools. And be sure to take a walk through the colorful Butterfly Gardens.

Barton Springs Pool

Combine great swimming with people watching at the historic Barton Springs Pool , just minutes from downtown Austin. Located in the heart of the 360-acre Zilker Park , this swimmer’s paradise features clear water fed from underground springs that stays a refreshing 68 degrees year ‘round, along with grassy hills for sunbathing.

Deep Eddy Pool

The huge Deep Eddy Pool is the state’s oldest pool, and offers a traditional public pool experience for lap swimming and recreational swimming in the center of Austin.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

Here are a few of the most amazing Austin swimming hole options. 

Jacob's Well

As you approach the GPS location of  Jacob's Well  through a quiet neighborhood of the Austin suburb of Wimberly, you might feel as if you've taken a wrong turn. Continue following the directions, however, and in just a few minutes you'll lay eyes on a delightful and bizarre deep water hole in Austin TX. A karstic spring that's as important for recreation as it is for feeding Austin's main source of drinking water, Jacob's Well is an Austin swimming hole that is quite literally overflowing.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

What happens when erosion causes the dome of an underground waterway to collapse? Head to Hamilton Pool to find out. Located near the city of Dripping Springs, about an hour from Central Austin, this Austin swimming hole presents itself in a surreal way, with a dramatic, semi-circular waterfall spilling into a turquoise-colored pool.

Before you make the trek out to Hamilton Pool, consult the  Travis County Parks website  to make sure it's open; it closes from time to time due to local flooding, as well as naturally occurring bacteria levels under certain climactic conditions.

UPDATE: As of May 2016, the City of Austin will begin requiring reservations in order to visit Hamilton Pool, due to chronic overcrowding there, even on days where bacteria levels preclude swimming. Click here to make a reservation.

Krause Springs

Austin probably isn't the first place in the world you think of when you hear the phrase "cliff jumping," but when you show up at  Krause Springs , located in the Austin suburb of Spicewood, that's exactly what you'll be expected to do. OK, so maybe that's an exaggeration – you aren't obliged to jump off a cliff at Krause Springs, a deep water hole in Austin TX.

However, once you see the emerald water of this Austin swimming hole below you, the dramatic cedars rising around on all sides, and feel the scorching Texas air start to burn your body, it's difficult to imagine why you wouldn't volunteer. A word to the wise, however: Only jump if you've chosen not to engage in the, um, libations locals tend to enjoy while out at Krause Springs. Safely jumping off cliffs requires a level of judgment that intoxication blurs!

Devil's Waterhole

Located in  Inks Lake State Park  about 90 minutes northwest of downtown Austin, Devil's Waterhole takes its name from the sinister-looking red, pink, and orange rock formations that rise above its vibrant water. Thankfully, there's nothing else evil about the wonderful swimming hole, except for the way the Texas summer heat sears your skin like, well, a hot pitchfork.

Make a day of your trip to this Austin swimming hole and head upstream to check out beautiful waterfalls nearby, which tend to be the most spectacular in the days after it's rained. If you head to Devil's Waterhole in the morning, make sure to stop by Lake Travis on the way back to downtown. The water there won't compare to the majesty of what the devil offered you, but you can enjoy a meal and one of Austin's best sunsets at the Oasis.

Barton Springs Pool

With crystalline blue water that runs at 68ºF year round and a carefree energy that screams summer,  Barton Springs Pool  would be a world-class place to swim in any context – it just so happens to be located less than a mile from downtown Austin. After you work up the courage to jump into the pool the first time, make sure and take a look to the north, where you can actually see some of Austin's skyscrapers.

You'll never look at ordinary swimming pools the same again after visiting this Austin swimming hole, except perhaps for Austin's own Deep Eddy, which is a nice alternative on Thursdays, when Barton Springs is closed. Alternatively, there is a "free" section of Barton Springs just beyond the spillway of the main pool, and it's always open.

Lake Austin

Formerly known as Lake MacDonald, Lake Austin is one of the best lakes in Austin! Technically a water reservoir on the Colorado River in Austin, the lake is used for flood control, electrical power generation, and most importantly for us — recreaction!

Since most of the shoreline is privately owned, bank fishing is limited. There is a great spot at Emma Long Park and another one in Fritz Hughes Park near the Mansfield Dam. Lake Austin is one of the best Austin area lakes for fishing because there are largemouth bass, grass carp, bluegill, blue catfish, and white crappie!

Motorized boat traffic is allowed in Lake Austin and there are two wonderful concrete boat ramps for public use. If you do not have a boat of your own, you can rent a motorized boats, including pontoons! Lake Austin is popular is water-skiers and pontoon full of people having a great time!

Another great thing about Lake Austin is the number of restaurants that have docks along the lake! After a long day in the sun, cruising right up to dinner is such a treat! If you have a few days, you can camp among the giant cypress trees at Emma Long Metropolitan Park!

Lake Travis

Lake Travis is one of the most adventurous lakes near Austin because of it’s immense depths! Reaching 210 feet in some areas, Lake Travis is one of the few where visitors can SCUBA dive! Located Northwest of downtown, Lake Travis is also a reservoir of the Colorado River.

As Austin’s largest lake, you will always find people boating, water skiing, and fishing! There are also plenty of sail boats, houseboats, party barges, racing boats, and even luxury watercrafts. Closer to the shore and within its countless coves, many people spend their day canoeing or kayaking! Did we mention all of this equipment is available to rent from many of the suppliers along Lake Travis!

The parks surrounding Lake Travis should be on the list as well! Windy Point and Hippie Hollow are some of the most popular parks to visit, but there are numerous along the shoreline that each offer their own unique views. Some offer lakeside campsites or meadows and some offer cliffs that provide stunning views overlooking the lake!

Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake is one of the best lakes in Austin for relaxing because it does not allow motorized boats! Known to the locals as Town Lake, Lady Bird Lake is the third lake that makes up the reservoir system in the Colorado River surrounding Austin!

Because there are no motorized boats, this is a popular spot of flat water paddlers such as canoes, kayaks, and even paddle board yoga which is a favorite activity for locals. All of this equipment is available for rent from vendors around the lake!

With eleven miles of lakeside trails and eight official access points, Lady Bird Lake has lots of places to both enter and exit the lake. You can enter at Festival Beach, for example, and exit for a picnic in the cypress-lined Red Bud Isle. Red Bud Isle is also an off-leash dog park if you brought your pup with you!

Although swimming is not allowed in Lady Bird Lake, if you take the fork heading west it will lead to Barton Springs , a popular natural spring! The fishing in Lake Georgetown is some of the best along this section of the San Gabriel River. With largemouth bass, flathead, and channel cat!

For RVers, nearby Jim Hogg park has hookups and restrooms with showers. If you are looking to have a more lowkey experience (or do not own an RV), Tejas Park offers primitive camping! Advance reservations are required for entrance to all Lake Georgetown Parks!

Whether you are camping for the weekend, spending the day kayaking, or just laying out on the shore reading a good book, Lake Georgetown is one of the best lakes around Austin!

Lake Pflugerville

Lake Pflugerville is one of the best lakes in Austin to swim! If you are looking for an easy day trip from Austin , Lake Pflugerville is the place to pick! With fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and wind surfing, there is plenty to keep you and your group busy!

With a mean depth of ten feet and a max depth of 36 feet, Lake Pflugerville is on the shallower side. Constructed in 2006, this reservoir on the lower Colorado River is fairly new, but it has already earned a spot as a favorite for locals! The adjacent Lake Pflugerville Park completed in 2010 is the cherry on top!

Although its main purpose is to provide water to locals, recreational activities abound! With a three mile long hiking trail (that doubles as a bike trail) there is plenty to do inside and outside of the water! As host to the Lake Pflugerville triathlon, you have the option to do all three: run, bike, and swim!

Only thirty minutes outside of Austin, this is the perfect spot for a lake day! Pack a picnic, bring the sunscreen and some towels, and spend the day enjoying one of the greatest Austin area lakes!

Lake Walter E. Long

Lake Walter E. Long is one of the best lakes in Austin for sports! Only 25 minutes away and open from 8am to 7pm, this lake is perfect for all your outdoor activities. At 1200 acres, there is plenty of room for everyone!

Different than the previous reservoirs, Lake Walter E. Long is a power plant cooling reservoir along Decker Creek. Managed by the City of Austin, the lake provides water for turbines used in the production of electricity! The lake is also used as a training spot for United States soldiers to conduct airborne and water rescue drills.

Renowned by the local fishing community this lake offers both abundance and variety for fishermen! With populations of both large mouth bass and hybrid stripe bass. The lake is known to be the location for fishing tournaments!

Many people come to spend the day boating, jet skiing or swimming! On land there are picnic areas, grills, walking and biking trails! Notably there are also a couple of sand volleyball courts! Lake Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park offers playgrounds and restrooms as well!

Lake Walter E. Long is one of the best lakes in Austin!

Lake Kyle is the one of the most relaxing lakes in Austin! Located less than 30 minutes from Austin, Lake Kyle has all the makings of a great day on the water! Located in the town of Kyle , which is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas.

Although you are not allowed to swim in Lake Kyle, there is still plenty to do! The four Nature Trails, using four different types of terrain, totaling four miles (lots of fours!) means that there will be something for everyone. The trails have different color post markers to keep you on the right one!

There are also boat ramps and fishing piers for those that want to try their luck fishing in Lake Kyle! The catfish prefer worms and shrimp, whereas the bass seem to favor the plastic worms and action lures! As Texas heats up for the summer, the fish tend to find the shade too! A shady bank will bring you more catches! Lookout for posted signage about whether you can fish, catch and release, or not fish at all!

Because Lake Kyle is a calmer lake, you are more likely to see wildlife in the area around the lake. Lake Kyle is one of the best lakes near Austin for a more low key experience!

Lake Lyndon B. Johnson

More commonly known as Lake LBJ, Lake Lyndon B. Johnson is one of the best lakes near Austin! A reservoir on the Colorado River in Texas Hill Country , Lake LBJ is a little further at 45 miles outside of Austin, but it’s worth the drive!

With its consistent water level, Lake LBJ is a popular destination for weekenders looking to boat, wakeboard, water ski, sail, fish, and so much more! Since it does get busy with boats, they recommend swimming in the coves and sandy beaches along the lake for your safety. But once you find a safe spot, it really is one of the best lakes in Austin to swim!

Being one of the larger lakes, Lake Lyndon B. Johnson is popular with the boaters. Whether you have powerboat, sailboat, yacht, pontoon boat, there is room for you at Lake LBJ. There are also a handful of yacht clubs to choose from. With both rental agencies and sales agencies surrounding the lake, you could be a temporarily or permanently live that lake life!

For a longer trip, there are cabins and vacation homes surrounding the lake for rent. Lake Lyndon B. Johnson is one of the best lakes near Austin for a boating adventure!

We know that Austin is no stranger to steaming hot summers, and Austinites are always looking for a relaxing escape from the heat. That's why we have compiled a list of a few of our favorite swimming holes in Austin! We're sure there is a perfect spot for you to kick back and relax in the water.

Less than 10 miles from Downtown Austin:

1. Deep Eddy Municipal Pool

Distance from downtown: 2.5 miles Directions: 401 Deep Eddy Ave, Austin, TX 78703 Hours: Open daily, 8 AM-8 PM for lap swim and 10 AM-8 PM for recreational swim. CLOSED the first Tuesday of every month.

If you’re craving the classic public pool experience, Deep Eddy Pool is the perfect place for you! The pool has been named the oldest swimming pool in Texas and has been serving as a cool sanctuary for Austinites since 1915. The beach entry and lap lanes make this pool perfect for both relaxation and exercise. This spot is so perfect that leaving will have you singing the “Deep Eddy Blues.”

Cost & Reservations:

Residents: 1-11 and 62+ $2, 12-17 $3, 18-62 $5 Non-residents: 1-11 $4, 12-17 $5, 18-62 $9, 62+ $5; Children under 1 and veterans can enter for free.

Deep Eddy does not require reservations, but there is a maximum capacity that fills up fast. Make sure to get there early to get a great spot!

2. Barton Springs Municipal Pool

Distance from downtown: 3 miles Directions: 2201 William Barton Dr, Austin, TX 78746 Swim at your own risk hours: Daily 5 AM-8 AM Guarded swim: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8 AM-10 PM. CLOSED Thursday 9AM-7PM

Barton Springs , as one of the most popular and well-known swimming spots in Central Austin, is a staple to visitors and locals alike. Placed right inside Zilker Park, this area is perfect to take a dip in the cool water or just relax on the grassy lawns that line the springs. Famous for its year-round 68° swim, Barton Springs is known for its crisp water that is sure to keep you cool on a hot summer day. The springs are also home to the endangered Barton Springs Salamander, so after your swim make sure to pop over to the Swim! educational exhibit to learn more about the ecosystem of Barton Springs.

3. Gus Fruh at Barton Creek Greenbelt

Distance from downtown: 5 miles Directions: 2642 Barton Hills Dr, Austin, TX 78704 Hours: Open daily 5 AM-10 PM

Gus Fruh trail, located at the Barton Creek Greenbelt, is just a ¼ mi walk to a picturesque swimming hole. There are many swimming holes along the Greenbelt, but Gus Fruh stands out because of its calm atmosphere and relaxing trees that provide just enough shade to wash your cares away. This spot is family-friendly and provides fun for children and adults alike. Additionally, if you would like to take a break from swimming, there are always quiet spots to set up your towel or hammock and soak up some sun.

Costs & Reservations:

The Greenbelt requires no reservations or entry fees, but make sure to check here before you go if the water levels at the swimming holes are safe to swim.

10-20 miles from Downtown Austin:

4. McKinney Falls State Park

Distance from downtown: 10 miles Directions: 5808 McKinney Falls Pkwy, Austin, TX 78744 Hours: Open daily 8 AM-10 PM

The flowing waters of Onion Creek provide beautiful limestone falls into the cool pools at McKinney State Park. You can take a dip in either the upper or lower falls, both of which provide a perfect spot to splash around or have a relaxing summer dip. The Lower Falls is a kid-friendly spot, ideal for wading and shallow swimming.

The Upper Falls has deeper waters that are the ultimate place to bring a floatie and just relax. Although slightly warmer than the constant 68° of Barton Springs, this spot is a perfect family-friendly area to lay down your chairs and your worries! There are so many things to do at this state park, and if you feel like your stay is too short, there is always an option to camp in a tent or in one of the newly remodeled cabins.

Day passes are required to swim and give you access to all the fishing , hiking and other adventures that the park provides. Ages 13+ $6, children under 13 enter for free

Reservations must be made to swim the Upper and Lower Falls. Make them in advance to make sure you secure your spot!

5. Bull Creek District Park

Distance from downtown: 10 miles Directions: 6701 Lakewood Dr, Austin, TX 78731 Hours: Open daily 5 AM-10 PM

For more of a hidden gem swimming hole, visit Bull Creek. Lined with trails, Bull Creek gives way to four main swimming holes and a stream all along the trail that are ideal for dipping your toes in. The Middle Falls are easy to access because of the parking lot right on the edge of the swimming hole. The most popular swimming spot is the Upper Falls. This well-loved wading area provides the amenities of a close restroom and parking nearby.

If you are willing to hike a little bit farther it is totally worth it! The Side Falls are often less busy and lend themselves to a more peaceful and private summer swim. This area is also right across from the Bull Creek Nature Preserve! Lastly, if you want to take a quick swim before or after your hike, the Lower Bull Creek Falls sits right at the trailhead. Bull Creek can be less crowded than spots close to the city, so the short drive is very rewarding!

Reservations are not required and entry is free, so swim at your own risk. Bull Creek also allows dogs! Come take your pup for a fresh swim, just make sure to keep them on a leash and clean up after them!

6. St. Edward’s Park

Distance from downtown: 13 mi Directions: 7301 Spicewood Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78759 Hours: Open daily 5 AM-10 PM

Nestled in the bends of Spicewood Springs Road is St. Edwards Park. If you are an explorer that loves to get lost in nature this spot is perfect for you! In addition to all the hiking trails, you can find swimming areas around every corner that are ready for you to dive into. St. Edwards is also dog friendly, making it a perfect place to cool off with your pup on a hot day.

Reservations are not required for this park and entry is free!

Texas summers can be absolutely brutal, and when you’re not used to working in the heat, a day spent painting the exterior of your house, or staining your deck or fence could end up sending you to the emergency room for heat exhaustion. So why not leave your summer projects to those of us who have trained and conditioned for this mission, while you enjoy some of the cool outdoor activities Austin has to offer? That1Painter to the rescue!

Texans love to soak up the sun, however…the sun likes to take things a little too far at times. We like to think of the Texas sun as a wild animal. Keep a safe, respectful distance, listen to the warning growls when you’re too close, take the proper measures to protect yourself (no, not by using a gun. You can’t shoot the sun, ya hick!) and you’ll be just fine. Saunter up with an air of cockiness and, well…you’re gonna get burned!

Out here in Austin, we say it’s not a bad idea to cultivate a real healthy fear of UV rays. If you start to get overheated, buff up your water with electrolytes and submerge your body in some cool waters for a spell. After 15 minutes of vitamin D absorption, slap on that sunscreen, lest the sun take its sweet revenge by turning you pink and leaving you peeling for days. And never… never look the sun directly in the eyes. They are the alpha!

Historically, many of us have survived the Texas heat by staying as close to a water source as physically possible and in Austin, options abound! From cold-water rivers to spring-fed pools, Austin has the water hookup necessary for a summer spent outdoors. We’re here to share our favorite spots with you, so you too can learn to thrive in summer!

Safety first: If you’re planning on taking a swim in any of these locations, we’d like to first direct you to the Texas Parks & Wildlife safety tips . It’s important for you to stay safe while adventuring; getting hurt just stops all the fun, so take precautions to make the fun last longer!

Bull Creek is one of many cold-temp, freshwater streams branching off of the Colorado River. There are several parks off of the highway that will give you access to the glistening creek, all free of charge and a short walk from your car to the water. Each Bull Creek park offers something a little bit different, so we recommend visiting each of them over the summer and telling us which was your favorite!

If exploring Texas flora is your jam, Bull Creek has enough light-to-moderate trails for the family to enjoy a relaxed stroll along the water, while taking in the beautiful Southern trees, flowers, and cacti. When you’re ready to cool down, grab your water shoes and take a jaunty walk to the water where a short, but wide waterfall pours in. Ahh, there’s nothing like taking a relaxing float under the blue Texas sky while the restful sounds of rushing water wash around you (try saying that five times fast).

Bull Creek is also a great place to do a lot of laid-back wading with a beer (or juice box)* in hand, or beaching on the large water rocks, enjoying views of the small waterfalls several of the parks have to offer.

*Don’t forget to keep Austin clean, and gather all the remnants of your adventure before heading home for the day! Aka don’t be a Messy Myrtle, pick up your trash. Pretty pleeeease! 

Sculpture Falls

Sculpture Falls is one of my absolute favorite spots for a fun-filled water day. The falls are a part of the Barton Creek Greenbelt that spans 8 miles and are uniquely beautiful because of the multi-sized divots formed all over the rocks, mesmerizing and enchanting you as the river flows over and around its small, scattered pools.

These darling falls host activities for all ages and some abilities. Treat your feet to a smooth underwater path, as you traverse on a short journey through the river. You’re not likely to experience chunks of sharp rock cutting up your feet like some river beds (ahem Bull Creek ahem), but the rocks can be slippery, so we recommend water shoes if you plan on, y’know, using your feet.

There are ledges where some jump (at their own risk) into the water*, and natural, mini-waterfall rock slides that adults and kids alike use to ride into the natural pool.

Just a couple rocks over, a spot with deeper water makes for a perfect swim or chat-and-tread (that’s talking while treading water), and there are plenty of areas with smooth rocks where you can comfortably sit and sun, without getting fully submerged.

For a lovely walk, suitable for many skill levels, you can take the Barton Creek Greenbelt starting at the trailhead at South Mopac and hike 3.2 miles into Sculpture Falls or simply take a break from your day at Sculpture Falls to enjoy a stroll, turning back when you’re ready to resume swimming!

The trail contains a bit of rocky terrain with roots and uneven paths at times but is a generally moderate hike. It tends to be highly trafficked in the afternoon and is dog-friendly, though they ask that you leash your puppo for your hike. This partially shaded trail is enjoyable for a summer stroll – just remember to stay hydrated in the Texas heat and take the occasional dip to stay cool.

Krause Springs

We have two syllables for you: DREAM-EE.

Krause Spring is straight magic, we cannot tell a lie. When you approach the place, you’ll be greeted by lush gardens, both natural and those cultivated by human hands. Upon entry, you’ll be greeted by the magical sounds of windchimes which leads to what felt like an enchanted fairy garden.

After you’ve explored the garden and paid the entry fee, you’ll find yourself in another world! They have this rustic and absolutely charming Upper Pool, that will make you second guess your plan to head straight for the springs, it’s so inviting. Then, descending on stone steps, you’ll find yourself immersed in the forest, stepping in the natural pool which is constantly fed by 32 natural springs, giving you a crisp temperature of 68° F to cool off in.

There is so much to explore in this wonderland! Enjoy a luscious view of the green-bordered natural pools while picnicking on large rocks. Bring food and drink in non-glass containers and clean up before you leave, to preserve the land. Swim under a gentle waterfall and hike back into the lush green pathways that take you past a stunning rock wall, that’s perfect for that family photo.

As far as tent camping goes, they always have room, so reservations aren’t necessary – just pay when you get there. You can drive up to your tent site, but there are no electrical or water hookups and no generators allowed on site. If electrical and water are what you desire, then you can call ahead of time to check availability and reserve an RV site to tent camp in. There are bathrooms with showers available for all. What more could you need?

Deep Eddy Pool

Admission: Adult (18-62 years): $3 (non-residents: $8) Junior (12-17 years): $2 (non-residents: $4) Child (1-11 years): $1 (non-residents: $3) Under 1 year: FREE Senior (62+ years): $1 (non-residents: $4)

If you’re into vintage swimming, you have found your spot! Deep Eddy Pool is Texas’ oldest man-made pool. Fed by water from two wells, the unchlorinated water varies in temperatures between 66 and 75° F, depending on the time of year.

This regional aquatics center hosts a variety of swimming lanes that are generally open to the public but occasionally closed for classes. Check their website for the days and times of public swims, before heading over there for the day. This isn’t the only public pool in Austin, just the oldest! The official Austin Texas website has a list of options!

We can’t quite imagine that most people would want to camp anywhere in Texas during the dead of summer, but if you just absolutely love the heat, McKinney Falls State Park is a great option. Go on with your bad self, ya crazy sun lover you!

McKinney Falls State Park, TX

Admission: Adult: $6.00 daily Children (12 years and under): FREE

McKinney Falls State Park is a great place to get away and camp with the family for a few days. About 15-20 minutes away from downtown Austin, this campsite features lots of sites for tent camping, a few screened-in campsites, an RV, and 6 cabins for rent, all with electric and water hookups. This park offers really beautiful nature trails for hiking and biking, bouldering, and more for a day trip or a short staycation. You can fish or swim in the cooling water of Onion Creek before heading back to camp for dinner and a snooze.

Best Swimming Holes in Texas Near Austin – Less Than a 2-Hour Drive

Cypress bend park.

The 16.93-acre park is named after the many Cypress Trees along the bank of the Guadalupe River. When visitors and locals float down the Guadalupe River, this is the last public exit on the Guadalupe for the tubers to exit the river. Where: 503 Peace Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130 Distance from Austin: 46 mins.

Tonkawa Falls (Crawford)

Tonkawa Falls offers a magnificent 15-foot waterfall that rushes into a natural swimming hole. You’ll enjoy overhanging bluffs, the spray of the waterfall, and the natural beauty of this serene spot. The Falls are located in a city-owned park. There is a picnic area available, with grassy spots and rock tables for when you’re not in the water. The park also allows for swimming during the rainy season.

Update as of June 25, 2023 – Due to critical weather conditions, the City of Crawford is implementing Stage 5 of its Drought Contingency Plan which means you can’t swim or do water activities at the moment. Please check their  Facebook  for the latest updates.

Jacob’s Well (Wimberley)

Most families in Texas know of or have been to Jacob’s Well. This beloved swimming hole is practically a Texas institution as it has been used since before the days of early settlers. Jacob’s Well is four meters wide and pumps thousands of gallons of water into Cypress Creek, which flows throughout Wimberley. Complete with a cavern for expert divers, Jacob’s Well is considered a unique feature of the state, as caverns aren’t common in the area.

Hamilton Pool Preserve  visitors are currently allowed to get into the water from the beach. Only a very limited portion of the pool is available for water access due to the problem of falling rocks. As always, whether swimming will be allowed depends on factors beyond our control, such as bacteria levels and recent rain.

Water access is never guaranteed with a reservation. Even when swimming is not allowed the preserve is open for hiking and reservations are still required.

City Tube Chute – Comal River (New Braunfels)

The City Tube Chute is an experience that is definitely worth checking out. Visitors can hire a tube and float along the Comal River. While the waves are lazy and calm upstream, as you float down towards the chute, things will get wilder.

The chute is a built-in slide that’s part of the dam. As you might expect, the City Tube Chute is a prime party spot on the weekends. If you’re looking for a lazy, calm experience you might want to visit in the morning or earlier in the week to avoid congestion. The park is currently open from 9 am to 8 pm daily with limited capacity. Where: 250 Meusebach St, New Braunfels, TX 78130 Distance from Austin: ~ 51 mins.

Krause Springs (Outside Austin)

Krause Springs is so much more than just a swimming hole. Located about 30 miles outside of Austin, in a campground, Krause Springs is a swimming hole surrounded by more than 30 natural springs. Above the swimming hole, there is a strong waterfall. Part of the springs feeds into a man-made pool. Families can also visit the Butterfly Garden or check out the tree swing to launch into the end of the natural swimming hole. Krause Springs is an excellent spot for a family day trip.

They have instituted some new rules and guidelines for visitors to follow, such as staying 6 feet apart, hand sanitizer stations throughout the facilities, and more. Where: 424 County Road 404, Spicewood, TX 78669 Distance from Austin: ~ 47 mins.

Pedernales Falls State Park – Johnson City

Flowing over and around huge slabs of limestone, the Pedernales River can be turbulent. But most often it is tranquil, and a great place to relax and recharge. They are just 30 miles west of Austin. Come over for an afternoon swim or hike, or load up your gear for an overnight adventure. The river awaits! Where: 2585 Park Road 6026 Johnson City, TX 78636 Distance from Austin: 54 mins.

Devil’s Waterhole – Burnet

Inks Lake State Park offers family fun on water and land. With its sparkling blue water, colorful rock outcrops, and striking sunsets, this gem of the Hill Country is just an hour northwest of Austin. Where: 3630 Park Road 4 West Burnet, TX 78611 Distance from Austin: 1 hr & 25 mins.

Guadalupe River State Park – Spring Branch

Many folks come here to swim, but the park is more than a great swimming hole. Beautiful scenery and colorful history await, just a short drive from San Antonio and Austin. Where: 3350 Park Rd 31, Spring Branch, TX 78070 Distance from Austin: 1 hr. & 29 mins.

Blue Hole – Georgetown

Blue Hole Park is a scenic lagoon bordered by limestone bluffs along the South Fork of the San Gabriel River. It is located five blocks north of the downtown Square along N. Austin Avenue. The park features picnic areas, restrooms, and wading areas. There is no entry fee to access Blue Hole Park. Equipment rentals are not offered. Blanco State Park

Come for a picnic, afternoon swim, fishing trip, or a weekend campout on the banks of the spring-fed Blanco River. They’re just an hour from Austin and San Antonio. Where: 101 Park Road 23 Blanco, TX 78606 Distance from Austin: 1 hr. & 11 mins.

Reimers Ranch Swimming Hole

Swim in the Pedernales River! The hike from the parking lot to the river is approximately 0.25 miles down a steep grade. Those ticking-off water holes in TX can’t miss out on this one. Where:   Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Distance from Austin: 37 mins.

As one of the Texas swimming holes, Lake Longhorn is a 49-acre freshwater lake and has 20 acres of green space dedicated to serving the lake in League City, Texas for your enjoyment. They offer recreational scuba diving, scuba diving training, triathlon swimming, triathlon swim training, (SUP) Stand up paddle boarding and kayaking.

Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Lake Houston Wilderness Park (LHWP) is a beautiful, lushly forested expanse of nearly 5,000 acres, located three miles east of New Caney (approximately 30 miles north of Houston) off Hwy-59. Lake Houston Wilderness Park is the only park in the department that allows overnight stays in cabins and campsites.

Most of the park is heavily forested with over 20 miles of trails that provide a quiet escape from the bustling city. The park offers a variety of outdoor experiences for people of all ages including camping, hiking, trail running, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, birding, fishing, and horseback riding trails (visitors must bring their own bikes, fishing equipment, watercraft, and horses). Blue Lagoon (North of Huntsville)

Blue Lagoon is often compared to the Caribbean, thanks to the bright blue waters. This swimming hole can be found at the end of a ranch road, so it also serves as a hidden secret for everyone that’s not from the area. The limestone quarry features scuba training which is why you should choose this over other watering holes in Texas.

This is one of the closest swimming holes to Austin, which will be a benefit if you want a fast day trip. Blue Lagoon is open year-round. Reservations are required for scuba clients. Burger’s Lake (Fort Worth)

Burger’s Lake will take you back to the days of summer camp. This one-acre lake features water slides, water chutes, fountains, diving boards, and a trapeze to launch yourself into the cool water.

Concan Swimming Hole

Looking for “a swimming pool near me?” Swimming at Amistad is a great way to escape the desert heat. Water temperatures range from 54°F in winter months to 86°F in late summer. Unsupervised swim areas are located at Governors Landing and at Diablo East.

Swimming is not allowed in harbors, within 200 feet of fishing docks, near mooring areas and boat ramps, and in any other area posted as closed to swimming or visitor use. These areas are unsafe areas for swimmers because of vessel concentrations and fishing hooks and lines that might cause injuries. The Best Places To Enjoy The Colorado River In Austin, Texas

The Colorado River flows right through the heart of Austin , Texas. Dammed in two different spots, it forms Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake. It is by far the most prominent natural feature in the Texas capital. There are a plethora of ways to enjoy the lake and the stunning scenery that surrounds it.

Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike

The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike is one of the best urban trails in all of the country. At just over 10 miles long it completely circles Lady Bird Lake making it the perfect place to hike or run for hours in the middle of the city. If ten miles sounds like too much of a workout, there are pedestrian crossings on each of the four bridges that cross Lady Bird Lake. The Hike and Bike trail has many great vantage points and runs almost constantly on the river’s edge. If that isn’t close enough, the southeastern portion of the trail, known as the boardwalk, runs out above the lake.

3. Red Bud Isle

Of course, one of the most obvious ways to see what the Colorado River has to offer, is to be on a boat. There are many rental places that offer a full assortment of river worthy vessels, if you don’t have your own. It isn’t the launching point that matters, just the fact that paddling around the river alone or with friends offers some of the best sightseeing (with so many angles to take in the skyline from) and people watching (the lake is always bustling with activity on a nice day) that the city has to offer.

There are a few restrictions to keep in mind while on Lady Bird Lake, however. Gasoline powered vessels and swimming are both banned without a permit from the city. Lake Austin is the place to take out motorboats and jet skis, and it buzzes with activity almost every day.

Lamar Pedestrian Bridge

While the South Congress Bridge gets all the love from the evening crowds excited to watch the bats trickle out from underneath, it is far from the most scenic bridge that crosses Lady Bird Lake.

The Lamar Pedestrian Bridge is a much better spot to take in the sights of the river, while being removed from roaring Austin traffic. While there are no bats in the evening there is a spectacular view of the sun setting as it displays an array of colors dancing on the water’s surface. To the east is the railroad bridge, which is covered in some of the best graffiti in Austin. With all the runners and bikers crossing, and kayakers and stand up paddle boarders down below there is plenty of people watching to pass the time as the Colorado slowly trickles downstream.

Best Waterfalls to Visit in Austin

Texas is not the main place one would go looking for water, especially waterfalls! Thankfully Austin is the most nature-packed part of the state! With the intense summer heat creeping in, staying near water will become essential to anyone’s summer plans. 

The usual places to evade the heat in Austin include Barton Springs Pool or Lady Bird Lake. Sometimes you just want to get away from the crowd and forget you’re living in a city. So I’m here to tell you about the best waterfalls in or around Austin! 

Now, keep in mind that a Texas waterfall is different from your typical one. I spent a year traveling the country in my van and saw some real jaw-dropping falls. That’s what makes Texas so special, though! Because it’s such an uncommon place to find them, it makes it all the more valuable when you do stumble across one.

1. Mckinney Falls State Park

In this state park, there are two waterfalls: the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls. Located about 15 minutes south of Central Austin, this is the closest and best state park in the city. One of the perks of this park is that the waterfall is just one of the highlights. There is something for everyone here, whether it be hiking, biking, fishing, camping and, of course, swimming. After October, you start to get some rain and by springtime, the falls start flowing! Mckinney Falls is my favorite full-day activity if I’m trying to see some flowing water.

2. Hamilton Pool

This is the best waterfall near Austin, but it’s a fairly far drive. So if you only have time for one waterfall visit, this one is sure to blow you away. I would dare to say it’s one of the best things to see in all of Texas. Back in the day, there was no reservation required and you were free to come here with no plans and have this wonder of the world to yourself! With so many people moving to the city, it’s become quite crowded and hard to have for yourself. Now, you need to make a reservation before you go. Upon arriving, you’ll hike a short way until you stumble upon a huge carved-out cave with a 50-foot waterfall raining down into the natural pool. Currently, swimming is prohibited so you’ll have to admire it from afar, but keep an eye out on their website for any updates. Even after traveling the entire country, this place still blows me away. It’s grand, unique and will make you fall more in love with this planet.

3. Krause Springs

Founded in 1955, this is a long-time hidden gem to the residents in and around Austin. Over 100 acres of hiking and biking make this outdoor haven worth a full day. The main feature is its collection of human-made and natural swimming pools as well as waterfalls dispersed throughout the area. The water stays 68 degrees year-round due to being fed by the natural springs. This makes it so there is never stagnant water, making it always safe to swim in. The waterfall is covered in vibrant green moss and you truly forget you’re in Texas when looking at this wonder. Krause Springs is the greenest part of Austin and a place I take people to prove that we have nature in Texas!

4. Sculpture Falls

Austin is known for its Barton Creek Greenbelt, a collection of dense uninterrupted nature trails. Along these trails is easily the most popular waterfall and hike in the Greenbelt. You have to make sure there’s been rain so the pools are deep enough to swim in. There’s a beautiful 2.5-mile hike leading to it that should help weed out some of the crowd and hopefully, you get this wonder to yourself! Another reason why this is such a treasure for the locals is that it’s pet-friendly! Now, your dogs can escape the heat with you and enjoy a beautiful day in that crisp, refreshing water. Sculpture Falls is my favorite half-day activity. It gives me a chance to run some trails and hop in the water as my reward. Once I’ve soaked up enough sun, I can head back and still have so much time left in the day.

Everyone should get the chance to enjoy nature without the crowd. With the exploding population of Austin, this is becoming hard to do. My recommendation is to go when no one else will! Make an effort and get out there first thing in the morning. Have some time to yourself and sit in peace and gaze upon these hidden gems in this hot desert that is Texas.

The Watering Bowl

Arriving at The Watering Bowl, I was immediately struck by the unique concept of a water park combined with a dog park and bar. How paw-some is that? The park's tagline "where dogs and humans splash together" is spot on. As an avid dog lover, I couldn't wait to dive into the fun.

The cool dog park and bar set The Watering Bowl apart from other water parks in Austin. It was truly a paradise for both furry friends and their humans. Watching the dogs frolic in the water while enjoying a refreshing beverage was a treat for the senses. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive , ensuring both dogs and humans had a paw-sitively great time.

Cleanliness is key when it comes to water parks, and The Watering Bowl exceeded expectations. The clean and well-maintained facilities created a comfortable and hygienic environment. I also appreciated the emphasis on safety, as there were clearly marked play areas and secure fencing to prevent any escape artist pups from causing chaos.

The highlight of my visit was watching my own furry friend make new pals and splash around in the specially designed doggy pools. The safe and secure play areas gave me peace of mind, knowing that my four-legged companion could enjoy the water without worry.

When summer hits Texas, there is only way to stay cool outdoors and that is by being in the water! Luckily for visitors to this Central Texas city, there are plenty of Austin water parks within a short drive. 💦

With the Texas Hill Country close by and a handful of water parks within a short drive, there are many options for spending your days outside in Austin with family and friends. Water parks are a great way to cool off during the hot and humid summer months!

As our children have gotten older, water parks have become one of our favorite ways to spend a summer day in this vibrant (but HOT) city. We are on a mission to explore every water park within a one hour radius and let you know what we think of them! So far, our favorite might surprise you! Check it out below!

Austin is home to some of the best water parks in Texas, offering a variety of attractions and activities for families and friends to enjoy. Here are some of the most popular water parks in Austin or nearby:

Waterloo Adventures

Waterloo Adventures is a unique water park experience located on Lake Travis. The park offers boat transportation to a private beach where visitors can enjoy a variety of water activities including a floating obstacle course!

This inflatable aqua park is a really unique way to spend the day on the water! It features a variety of obstacles and attractions, including slides, trampolines, and climbing walls. It’s a great place for adults and kids alike to have fun in the sun. Visitors get 50 minutes on the obstacle course with admission.

The resort-style amenities also include lakefront beach umbrellas, chaise loungers, hammocks, drink coolers, and more. Grab a BBOQ sandwich or smokehouse sausage spend the rest of the day on the beach soaking up the sun after an active time on the course! It is the perfect spot to take in some amazing Hill Country views.

Typhoon Texas – one of our favorites!

Typhoon Texas is known for its thrilling rides and attractions, including a lazy river, wave pool, and water slides. Our family of five was able to visit this water park near Austin for a great price with our Pogo Pass just this month.

This water park is on a 25-acre property in Pflugerville that features over 30 rides and attractions, including the Tanzanian Twister, a thrilling uphill water coaster, and Adventure Island, an obstacle course and playground for kids.

One of the main attractions at Typhoon Texas is the wave pool in Tidal Wave Bay (this is where you will find my daughter most of the day!). The pool generates waves of up to six feet, providing a thrilling experience for swimmers. You can also relax on the lazy river, which is over 1,000 feet long and features a variety of water features.

You’ll find a good number of water slides, including The Snake Pit slides, which are an exciting ride (and where you are most likely to find my sons!).

You can relax in hammocks and beach chairs, play beach games, and sometimes even enjoy live entertainment. The park also offers cabanas for rent and plenty of food and bar options.

I find admission to Typhoon Texas to be reasonably priced, and season passes or multi-packs are available for those who want to visit the park multiple times throughout the season.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, Quest ATX offers a wakeboarding experience for all levels. The cable wakeboarding park is a highlight, where you can glide across the water, catching air on ramps and honing your skills. With professional instructors available, even first-timers can experience the joy of wakeboarding.

Quest ATX also boasts a high-flying swing that will have you soaring through the treetops, taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. And if you’re up for a challenge, the outdoor obstacle course will put your strength and agility to the test.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark

Schlitterbahn Waterpark is one of the most popular waterparks in Texas (and definitely the biggest!), located in New Braunfels, just a short drive from Austin. It is a perfect destination for those looking for a whole fun-filled day of water activities.

The waterpark has a variety of attractions that cater to all ages, including a lazy river, wave pool, uphill water coaster, tons of slides, area for littles, and many more. The park is also known for its cabanas, which provide a great spot to relax and enjoy the sun. There are two sections of the park – the “old” park and the “new” park with an easy shuttle that runs between them. We spent most of our time at the new park.

One of the park’s most popular attractions is-lazy river, which is a great way to relax and cool off while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The Torrent River wave pool is another favorite, as it provides a thrilling experience for those who love to swim in the waves. We spent HOURS here last summer – it was a definite family favorite!

Another family favorite is the Raging River! My son and I hopped in the short line as one final hurrah as the ret of the family was ready to head back to the car. Thirty minutes later we had ridden through a series of rapids, gone through tunnels, meandered through the entire original water park, AND we floated all the way into the Comal River! After floating down the natural springs river for a few minutes, we were able to exit the river and reenter the park. It was was such a fun surprise!

For those who are looking for a more adrenaline-pumping experience, the uphill water coaster is a must-try. This ride takes you up a hill before dropping you down a steep slope, providing a thrilling experience for all.

We love that Schlitterbahn lets you bring in your own coolers with food and rinks. Stake out a spot as your home base or rent a locker for your things. There are plenty of food and drink options and cabana rentals if you would rather eat at the park.

• If you visit on a weekend, expect VERY long lines for the slides. We got in line within an hour of opening on a summer Saturday and it took over 2 hours to ride one slide! The Blast Pass can help speed this up.
• Bring your own cooler filled with food and beverages. Check their website for limitations.
• Join the Reading Program in the fall so that your children can earn free passes by reading!

Hyatt Regency Lost Pines – our other favorite!

Welcome to Hyatt Lost Pines , a hidden paradise in the heart of nature! While this resort is a bit different than the other water parks we have on this list, if you are looking for a getaway that includes some water park features, we think you will love this option.

As locals, Hyatt Lost Pines is our favorite local staycation getaway for a night or two and we often recommend it to others. As you arrive, you’ll be blown away by the beautiful surroundings. Tall trees sway in the breeze, and the air smells like wildflowers.

If you love water adventures, you’re in for a treat at Hyatt Lost Pines . The outdoor space features a lazy river, one water slide, a splash pad, and a pool with a beach entry that is perfect or little ones. Waterfalls flow into the lazy river which is one of my favorite parts! Plenty of tubes are provided too.

Plenty of seating is available with food and drink service. Local tip: Choose some in the shade under the trees as that area is much cooler than the seats under the umbrellas. Some cabanas are also available for rent for a larger personal space. You’ll find bar service in the lazy river and servers happy to serve you a drink as you float by. A section of the lazy river is designated for adults only for a peaceful spot to relax.

The pool area is available year round, but the water slide is only open seasonally. Also, the pool is heated but the lazy river is not, so we have found it to be the most comfortable May – September.

In the mornings, take the complimentary bikes for a ride or play tennis on the courts. Play a round of cornhole, take a walk through the scenic trails, or check the activity calendar for that day’s crafts, shows, or seasonal fun.

As the sun sets, gather around the cozy fire pit under the starry sky and pick up a packet for making tasty s’mores. On our last trip, a racoon stopped by the fire pit to say hello! Plan to sleep well in the cozy rooms surrounded by trees and beautiful landscaping!

Volente Beach Resort + Waterpark

Volente Beach is a family-friendly water park located on Lake Travis just a half our from Austin. The park features water slides, a swimming pool, lake access, and beach games. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, movie nights, and indulge in really tasty food and ice cream.

This Austin water park is so close home for us that we can’t believe it took us so long to visit!

If you are ready for adventure (and over 42″ tall), the waterpark has a range of water slides that will get your adrenaline pumping. The Texas Twister will make you scream the loudest! There is also a Pirate playground and a splash pad that younger children will love.

Play in the lake or splash in the pool. Feel free to bring our own life jackets and floaties. Or you can enjoy a variety of beach games and activities, including volleyball and cornhole.

When it comes to food and drinks, Volente Beach has definitely got you covered! The waterpark has a bar that serves a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There is also a restaurant that serves a range of delicious snacks and meals, including burgers, hot dogs, and nachos.

To add to the fun, Volente Beach hosts live music events throughout the summer. Visitors can enjoy some great music while lounging by the pool or floating on the lake.

• You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. No alcohol allowed and no grills available.
• Arrive after 4pm for a discounted entry rate.
• No cabanas are available but you are welcome to bring your own umbrella (we recommend this!).

Kalahari Resorts

Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in Round Rock, Texas is a massive resort that offers a unique all-under-one-roof getaway for families of all ages. It is home to America’s largest indoor waterpark, covering 223,000 square feet, filled with wet, wild, and fun rides and attractions.

This resort-style water park in Round Rock features both indoor and outdoor water attractions. The park offers a variety of slides, including a lazy river, and a splash pad for kids. Visitors can rent cabanas, enjoy live entertainment, and indulge in food and bar options. My kids get way too excited about the fact that they don’t have to wear sunscreen!

In addition to the waterpark, Kalahari offers Tom Foolery’s Adventure Park, an indoor theme park experience with a ropes course, climbing walls, laser tag, mini-golf, and more. There are also four on-site signature restaurants and a spa for guests to enjoy.

Kalahari Resorts & Conventions is a great place for families to spend quality time together and make SUPER fun memories, but it does come with a pretty decent price tag on peak days. We highly recommend weighing the cost of staying overnight with included passes, checking off peak dates, or buying separate day passes to get the best value and save a bundle. Locals will also want to keep an eye on their social media pages for locals’ deals on specific dates.

Rock’N River Waterpark

Rock’N River Waterpark is a popular destination for families looking to beat the summer heat in Austin, Texas. Located within Old Settlers Park, it boasts a 40,481-square-foot park complete with a lazy river, crazy slides, and a water playground.

We were introduced to this hidden gem when my daughter’s youth group planned a trip there. I packed up the other kiddos and we made a day of it. It is so reasonable priced with plenty to do to keep everyone busy for hours.

The park offers many amenities, including tunnel showers, a water cannon, tipping buckets, floor geysers, and a zero beach entry play area. Whether you are looking for a relaxing float down the lazy river or an adrenaline rush on one of the many thrilling water slides, it is the perfect low maintenance water park to plan a great summer day.

• Rock’N River Waterpark also offers season passes that include up to two adults and children from the same household if you plan to visit multiple times in one summer.

Barton Springs Pool

This natural spring-fed pool is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The pool is surrounded by lush greenery, making it feel like an oasis in the middle of the city. The water is always a refreshing 68 degrees, making it a great place to cool off on a hot day. To be totally honest, it is a CHILLY 68 degrees!

So Barton Springs is not exactly a water park. It is a natural springs pool in the middle of the city that is also one of Austin’s best beaches . But is so beautiful, and if you don’t feel up to a drive elsewhere to hit up some slides, it is well worth a visit.

Plan to bring a floatie because it makes the water much more comfortable to hang out in for more than a few minutes – we learned this the hard way! Be adventurous and jump off the diving board!

Only non-alcoholic drinks with a lid can be brought into the pool area, so leave all other drinks and snacks in the car and enjoy them at the picnic tables outside the gate when you need a refreshment break.

You can get your hand stamped and come in and out all day. Our favorite way to spend the day here is to go for a swim, and then walk over to The Picnic down the street and grab some tasty food from the food trucks for dinner before heading back for a sunset swim.

Texas Capitol Texas Capitol free

Standing stoically in the heart of central Austin is Texas's legislative center, the State Capitol. Opened in 1888, this landmark (made of Texas sunset red granite) stands 14 feet taller than the  U.S. Capitol  in  Washington, D.C.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Texas Capitol was designated at National Historic Landmark in 1986.

The structure underwent a massive restoration starting in the 1990s, including replacing the zinc statue of the Goddess of Liberty that sits atop the dome with an aluminum one. The restoration also included a 667,000-square-foot underground extension to accommodate how much the state government had grown.

The open-air Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium vibrates on UT football game days with seating for more than 100,000 fans.

Odds are your favorite band has played at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater. It's home to the legendary "Austin City Limits" television series, which holds the title of the longest running music series in American television history. The theater seats more than 2,700 people. The balcony level houses the Jack & Jim Gallery, which showcases the portfolio of Jim Marshall, a photographer with a passion for music. If you can't secure seats to a show, take a tour of the venue. The tour covers ACL history along with visiting the galleries. Tours depart from Monday to Saturday at 11 a.m. and last 90 minutes.

Music buffs praise the acoustics at ACL Live, claiming that there is not a bad seat in the house. Others said it was a bucket-list venue, similar to those in Nashville . A few note that some security staff was rude.

Lake Travis Lake Travis

Texas believes bigger is better and its lakes are no exception. Lake Travis is nearly 64 miles long and boasts 271 miles of shoreline. First-time visitors can get a good idea of its scale if they drive by Mansfield Dam, the dam that created Lake Travis while taming the Colorado River. After seeing the massive dam, stop by Mansfield Dam Park for impeccable lake views and activities like picnicking, swimming and scuba diving. Numerous other parks line the lake, offering everything from picnic tables and hiking trails to water sports and swimming. (Note: Hippie Hollow Park is a clothing optional beach and access is restricted to patrons 18 and older.) Travelers who want to enjoy the scenery with a drink should try The Oasis on Lake Travis. It's perched above the lake and calls itself the "Sunset Capital of Texas."

Recent visitors enjoyed their time on the lake, especially when viewing the sunset. It didn't seem to matter too much which park patrons picked, as many of the spots offer clean beaches and good amenities. Some recommended water shoes for slippery and jagged rocks underfoot.

Circuit of the Americas Circuit of the Americas

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is primarily a Formula One race track, though it hosts events year-round ranging from motor sports to concerts to its holiday-themed Peppermint Parkway lights display. The Lenovo United States Grand Prix race, which COTA has hosted since 2012, is a three-day Formula One event held in October that features heart-pounding race action paired with top musical acts and immersive experiences for attendees.

Beyond Formula One, COTA also hosts NASCAR and MotoGP events, as well as concerts at the on-site Germania Insurance Amphitheater, the largest outdoor concert venue in Austin. Behind the amphitheater, visitors can head up the COTA Tower for sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and racetrack 250 feet below; it costs $35 to visit the observation platform. 

Mount Bonnell Mount Bonnell free

For great views, head to Mount Bonnell at Covert Park, which provides sweeping vistas of the city, Lake Austin and the surrounding hills. The 5.1-acre linear park is home to a 781-foot outcrop, considered one of the highest spots in the area. Mount Bonnell is designated a Texas Historic Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The point has proven to be an enduring tourist destination since the 1850s.

Recent visitors said Mount Bonnell offers great views that are best on clear days. Others suggested a sunset visit for the top experience. Regardless of when you hike up, make sure to take water. Additionally, make sure to take your valuables with you when you park.

South Congress Avenue is the section of Congress Avenue after it passes over Lady Bird Lake. From the murals around every corner – like "Willie for President" (Nelson that is) to the iconic "I Love You So Much" – people are snapping pictures everywhere. Shopping along SoCo ranges from authentic boot shops to curated boutiques attracting both travelers and locals who are in search of conversation-starting outfits. Another top activity is patio dining where you can grab delicious bites from morning to night along with choice vantage points for people-watching. When you're not shopping, eating or strolling, swing by the Continental Club to grab a drink and enjoy some live music.

Located on the  University of Texas at Austin   campus, the Blanton Museum of Art is a must-see for any art enthusiast. It's considered one of the largest university art museums in the country, and is home to more than 21,000 works of art. Its collection of Latin American art (totaling more than 2,000 works) is one of the oldest, largest and most comprehensive collections in the U.S. with artists from Mexico and the Caribbean along with Central and South America. For some first-time visitors, Ellsworth Kelly's "Austin" grabs a lot of attention: "Austin" is a 2,715-square-foot stone structure with colored glass windows. Sometimes referred to as "the Kelly Chapel," this freestanding building features three sets of stained-glass windows, a totemic wood sculpture and 14 marble panels hanging on its interior walls.

In May 2023, the museum unveiled several new exterior features, including shade structures that stand three stories tall and look like flower petals; an outdoor sound gallery; a path that leads to a nearby parking garage, and the Lookout, a large window that allows visitors on the museum's second floor to gaze down at the newly upgraded plaza.

Sixth Street Sixth Street free

A trip to the "Live Music Capital of the World" wouldn't be complete without discovering some of Austin's up-and-coming talent along Sixth Street. After a drastic restoration took place in the 1960s to save the area from its grungy reputation, it became the hub of Austin's music scene in the 1970s. Today, Sixth Street between Congress Street and Interstate 35 (known as Dirty Sixth to locals) is the center of the musical action in Austin. The area buzzes with activity from shops, restaurants, bars and live music joints, such as Maggie Mae's, Pete's Dueling Piano Bar and the historic hotel, The Driskill (rumored to be haunted).

Another standout is Esther's Follies, a longstanding Texas tradition that combines comedy, music and magic. The show began in 1977 and still showcases its satirical blend of politics and pop culture .

Visitors wander from a display depicting the day he became president (after John F. Kennedy’s assassination) to his oval office to a talking LBJ animatronic that tells tales. In addition to the wealth of information about the president, you can learn about former first lady Lady Bird Johnson in both a gallery about her and her former office.

Barton Springs Pool Barton Springs Pool

Nestled in  Zilker Metropolitan Park , Barton Springs Pool has been a favorite swimming hole for locals and out-of-towners for generations. Native Americans used the springs for thousands of years before European colonists arrived. William Barton first developed it as a swimming hole in the 1830s. Fed by underground springs, the 3-acre pool consistently stays between 68 and 70 degrees. The grounds also feature grass areas for lounging, bathhouses and an educational exhibit about the history of the Barton Springs, including its endangered salamander.

Recent swimmers said the experience is one of the things that makes Austin unique. Even on a hot summer afternoon, the water felt a bit cold (especially for little kids), according to reviews. Some suggested wearing water shoes. Multiple visitors also warn of sizeable crowds and recommend arriving early.

Bullock Texas State History Museum Bullock Texas State History Museum

Named for Texas's 38th lieutenant governor, the Bullock Texas State History Museum explores the Lone Star State's vibrant past with artifacts ranging from the original Goddess of Liberty statue that resided at the top of the  State Capitol's dome to a 1960s missile control console from the space center in Houston . Along with galleries featuring more than 700 artifacts, the museum features rotating special exhibits to reflect the diverse history of Texas. The museum is also home to the largest IMAX screen in the state as well as the Texas Spirit Theater, a cafe with an outdoor patio and a souvenir shop. 

Native Texans and out-of-towners alike say the museum has a good layout and many recommend setting aside a few hours to take in all there is to see. Moviegoers enjoyed their IMAX experience.

As the Live Music Capital, Austin offers more than one entertainment district. Sixth Street oozes into Fourth's Warehouse District, packed shoulder-to-shoulder with bars and clubs. South Congress Avenue across Lady Bird Lake offers more dining and boutique shopping paired with classics like The Continental Club. Meanwhile, Rainey Street attracts a younger crowd, blending dog-walking locals cutting out early with visitors in town for a bleisure trip. This area features many of its original bungalows repurposed into venues and restaurants. The vibe might be laid-back, but the sound systems are cranked up. In between venues, Austin's ubiquitous food trucks offer a sampling of the city's dining scene. Several high-rise hotels cast their shadows down on Rainey, such as  Hotel Van Zandt , and the Austin Convention Center is nearby.

Named for its co-founder Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson (wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson ), the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is the place to visit if you're a flower enthusiast. The former first lady co-founded the center with Helen Hayes to educate others about the benefits of planting native plants, a project that has revolutionized gardening habits in central Texas. The center features North America's most diverse collection of Texas native plants. Visitors flock from all over the country to enjoy more than 900 species of Texan flora – including bluebonnets and evening primrose – that flourish on more than 280 acres of gardens. There are also walking trails and an observation tower. The 16-acre arboretum features 50 types of oaks found in Texas. For the kids in the group, head to the Luci and Ian Family garden for play structures and a maze.

Visitors say it's pretty year-round, but the spring and early summer provide the best chance to see the most flowers in bloom. They advise spending an hour or two here and to bring the kids so they can explore.

Austin Bats Austin Bats free

According to experts, Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. Approximately 1.5 million bats make the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge their home for part of each year. The bats settled here after a renovation of the bridge in 1980 created crevices that were perfect for bats to take refuge in against predators. Every spring, the Mexican free-tailed bats migrate north to the bridge to give birth and raise their babies. Come summertime, the bats can be seen each evening at dusk as they emerge for their nightly excursions to rid the city of pesky insects before heading back to central Mexico in the fall.  Evening kayak trips on Lady Bird Lake are a great way to observe the bats. Alternatively, head to the Statesmen Bat Observation Center (free) to watch: It's located next to the bridge on the south side of Lady Bird Lake.

Past visitors and locals alike who have taken the time to watch the bats say it's an interesting sight to see. Others remind future travelers that the bats are a natural phenomenon and therefore unpredictable, so you could be waiting a while. Many said to arrive early to grab a prime spot to watch.

The Contemporary Austin The Contemporary Austin

The first thing to realize when planning a visit to The Contemporary Austin is that the art museum actually occupies two separate sites that are miles from each other. There's the west side Laguna Gloria and the downtown Jones Center. The 14-acre Laguna Gloria houses the Art School at Laguna Gloria and is a beloved location for its art-in-nature setting. Laguna Gloria also houses the historic 1916 Driscoll Villa and the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park. Most of the sculptures at Laguna Gloria are outdoors, and fans of modern art will appreciate the beauty of its location close to Lake Austin.

Set on the corner of Congress Avenue and 7th Street, the Jones Center is hard to miss with neon script glowing from Jim Hodges's "With Liberty and Justice for All (A Work in Progress)" steel installation. The 8,000-foot Jones Center features two floors, including the Moody Rooftop, a favorite for views. This facility offers a robust calendar with exhibitions and films.

UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum

The works of Charles Umlauf, a University of Texas art professor for 40 years, intermingle with native Texas landscaping and water features on Umlauf's former property. Umlauf and his wife, Angeline, gifted their property, house and Charles' studio along with 168 sculptures to the City of Austin in 1985. The garden features 59 of Umlauf's sculptures, mainly in bronze using the lost wax method. The collection also includes thousands of his drawings.

Recent visitors called the garden "peaceful," particularly noting the sounds of water as they strolled. Most guests advised it would take about an hour to see the sculptures.

Elisabet Ney Museum Elisabet Ney Museum free

Back in 1892, Elisabet Ney, a German-born sculpture artist, built a neoclassical limestone home and studio in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood that ultimately earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. She went on to create sculptures of notable Texans, like Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston (both namesakes to Texas cities). Those life-sized marbles statues can be found in the Texas State Capitol foyer, blocks away. The Elisabet Ney Museum includes sculptural works, maquettes, medallions and some of Ney's personal effects and furniture. Located just north of the University of Texas , the castle-like home is one of the Hyde Park's must-sees. It sits on 2.5 acres of a restored Texas prairie that features native plants similar to what Ney would have seen upon arriving in Austin in the late 1800s.

This "hidden treasure" museum attracts many art lovers, who don't mind making the trek north of downtown. Several of the visitors were intrigued by the noted female artist working in the late 1800s Texas, when that was uncommon. Museum-goers enjoyed the grounds and the unique home.

Mexic-Arte Museum Mexic-Arte Museum

The Mexic-Arte Museum is devoted to the conservation of Mexican, Latinx and Latin American art and culture, including artists based in Texas. It's home to a permanent collection of more than 5,000 contemporary works, which includes photographs, sculptures, decorative arts and Mexican dance masks as well as works from local artists. The museum also hosts theatrical and musical performances year-round. 

Recent travelers said the museum was a pleasant surprise and recommend stopping in the eclectic gift shop. Many described the museum as "small, but mighty." Most recent visitors said it took about an hour to explore the collection.

Austin Nature & Science Center Austin Nature & Science Center free

Nestled in a corner of Zilker Park , the Austin Nature & Science Center cultivates a passion for the outdoors, especially for kids. The center provides hands-on exhibits designed to foster connections with the natural environment. One outdoor option is the Forest Trail, which includes information about the 45 types of native trees planted along the path. Visitors with kids should not miss the Dino Pit, which allows children to dig up an assortment of fossil casts, introducing them to paleontology. The Austin Nature & Science Center also houses several animal exhibits, including small fish, reptiles, birds of prey and mammals like bobcats. Additionally, visitors can observe a honeybee hive and walk along the pond.

Travelers appreciate how well the park caters to children, as the array of exhibits are sure to keep even the antsiest kids entertained. Several parents comment their kids spent hours wandering around the facility, especially the Dino Pit. Several recommend bringing hats and water bottles on hot days.

The Domain The Domain free

For high-end boutique shopping in Austin, head to The Domain, a collection of more than 100 retailers sheltered in an outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment district in North Austin. Neiman Marcus anchors the center, but shoppers will also find Tiffany & Co., Gucci and Louis Vuitton. In addition to luxury shops, The Domain offers more affordable staples like H&M, Macy's and Zara. Shopping isn't the only activity here: Travelers will also find the Museum of Ice Cream at The Domain, where visitors can learn about the history of ice cream in 12 different multi-sensory exhibits and enjoy unlimited ice cream treats. Located adjacent, the Domain Northside's Rock Rose District offers a strip of bars and eateries ranging from Velvet Taco to Lavaca Street Bar.

The Domain also houses four different lodging options:  The Westin Austin at The Domain ; the retro-inspired Lone Star Court; The Archer Hotel , a dog-friendly boutique property; and Aloft Austin at The Domain.

Mayfield Park and Preserve Mayfield Park and Preserve free

Despite its listing on the National Registry of Historic Places, Mayfield Park and Preserve attracts travelers primarily because of its exorbitant population of peacocks (around two dozen!). The peafowl roam the entire park; keep your eyes peeled as you explore and don't forget to look in trees and on roofs. The historical cottage and gardens sit in a 2-acre parcel of land, which Mary Mayfield Gutsch donated to the city of Austin in 1971. There are plenty of ponds and gardens to explore. Mayfield Preserve is a 21-acre natural landscape that travelers can access via walking trails.

The beautiful peacocks, who stayed relatively calm despite the steady stream of gawkers, impressed past visitors. Several parkgoers were able to snag photos of the peacocks spreading their feathers. Keep in mind a visit here in summer could get hot, so bring plenty of water.

McKinney Falls State Park McKinney Falls State Park

McKinney Falls is a nature fix for many Austinites. Onion Creek provides spots for swimming on hot summer days. As a bonus, fishing is allowed and you don't need a state fishing license. In addition to the creek, nearly 9 miles of trails take hikers and bikers around the park's limestone formations and wooded areas. After an active day, visitors at McKinney Falls can wind down at one of the park's 81 campsites or six cabins.  

Parkgoers recommend checking out both the upper and lower falls, calling both beautiful. Travelers also suggest planning your trip to coincide with the wet season (spring) to see the waterfalls at their best.

Thinkery Thinkery

Consider Thinkery Austin's children's museum. It offers activities that combine science, technology, engineering, arts and math, aimed at children up to age 11. Permanent exhibits at Thinkery range from Train Town and the Fresh! Farmers Market to Innovators' Workshop to Currents, which focuses on water. The museum also houses an enormous outdoor playground for kids to enjoy. In all, the Thinkery offers 40,000-square feet of space for babies, toddlers and kids to explore with their people.

Recent visitors appreciated Thinkery's assortment of hands-on activities, which they claimed did an excellent job of keeping children entertained. Museumgoers also recommend bringing a change of clothes, as the museum's water exhibit may soak your children. Overall, the museum makes an excellent destination on a rainy (or exceptionally hot) day in Austin.

Don't have glasses to watch today's solar eclipse? Here are 7 safe alternatives.

T he 2024 solar eclipse has finally arrived! This afternoon, millions will have their eyes on the sky to witness the celestial event.

Many locations giving away or selling solar eclipse glasses are out of stock, so you may not find a pair within the next few hours.

Don't panic though − there are alternative forms of eye protection you can use instead.

Watching the light pass through tree leaves. Peering into a modified cereal box. Angling a kitchen colander. You can view the solar eclipse using these safe, alternative methods and more.

Tree leaves project mini solar eclipses

A fun way to view the eclipse is by watching the light pass through tree leaves. Sunlight will project mini eclipses onto the ground as the light passes through gaps in the leaves.

You will be able to track the progress of the eclipse from start to finish, and see a cool natural effect.

Use a colander to show the solar eclipse

Similar to leaves, you can use a colander to project mini eclipses. The light will pass through the small holes in a colander to create a dazzling sight of tiny eclipses on the ground or on a canvas.

Senior lecturer and astronomy coordinator at UT Sean Lindsay likes this method as it's a more direct and safe way of showing the progress of an eclipse.

Create a pinhole projector to see the solar eclipse

With a  pinhole projector , sunlight travels through the pinhole to create a small image of the sun. The projector makes it safe to observe the solar eclipse if you don't have eclipse glasses.

All you need to do is take a piece of cardboard, cut an inch square in the middle, tape foil over the square and poke a small hole in the foil. Afterwards, angle the cardboard so the light travels through the hole and onto another piece of cardboard to show an image of the sun.

How to turn a box into a pinhole projector to view the eclipse

Another way to make a pinhole projector includes a box, tape, scissors, foil and paper.

Find a cardboard box you can comfortably place over your head. Cut a square hole on one end of the box and tape the foil over it. Poke a small hole in the foil. On the opposite side, tape a piece of paper inside the box.

Once its ready, turn your back to the sun and place the box over your head. Angle the box so the light goes through the hole and projects onto the paper. Now you can see the eclipse.

Convert a cereal box into a solar eclipse viewer

You can also make a pinhole projector using a cereal box.  NASA provides instructions  on how to craft one.

Empty the contents of the box and place a white piece of paper or cardboard at the bottom. Cut both ends of the top leaving just the center flaps. Tape the center to keep it closed. Cover one of the openings with foil and poke a small hole into the foil, but leave the other side open.

Once the cereal box is ready, you will need to turn away from the sun, angle the box so sunlight goes through the hole and peer into the box from the opening. The light will project an image of the sun onto the bottom of the box.

Turn a shoebox into a solar eclipse viewer

The cereal box method  works with shoeboxes , too.

Cut a small hole on one end of the shoebox and tape foil over it. Poke a small hole in the foil. Tape a small piece of paper inside the shoebox on the other end.

You can cut a hole to look into either on the foil side or on the long side of the shoebox near the paper for a closer view. When it's ready, close the shoebox and angle it so the sunlight passes through the pinhole, down the length of the shoebox and onto the paper. It will project an image of the sun inside.

Use your hands to view the solar eclipse

Take both hands and  overlap your fingers  with one hand vertical and the other horizontal. Your fingers should cross over each other and form square gaps.

Now, angle your hands so sunlight hits them. Sunlight will pass through the gaps like pinholes, projecting mini eclipses onto the ground or a canvas.

Severe weather alerts issued for Texas as thunderstorms, large hail threaten post-eclipse travel

DALLAS  – Severe weather managed to hold off from thwarting any solar eclipse viewing , but it still remains a threat to much of Texas and into neighboring states Monday evening and night as millions make their trek home.

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. CT stretching from eastern Texas into northern Louisiana.

Additionally, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for communities around Abilene until well after sunset.

Supercell thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity Monday evening across the region, with threats of a few tornadoes, wind gusts over 70 mph and very large hail that could exceed 3 inches in diameter.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center  (SPC) has a large swath of northeastern Texas, including the Dallas - Fort Worth  Metroplex, in a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe weather because of the threat of very large hail upwards of 3 inches or greater in diameter . 

The Level 3 threat now extends even into Shreveport and northwestern Louisiana. 

The dangerous forecast forced the early cancelation of a major music festival in Burnet, Texas. 

The Texas Eclipse 2024 festival organizers announced Monday morning that due to the risks of high winds, tornadic activity and thunderstorms later Monday through Wednesday "we've agreed to end the festival (Monday) in a calm, orderly manner." All performances were canceled, but guests were allowed to stay for the eclipse provided they are packed and ready to leave at its conclusion.

Computer forecast models are painting a rather complex situation with an upper-level  low-pressure system  that will move into the Desert  Southwest  on Monday, interacting with a moist air mass and deep wind shear – the change in wind speed and/or direction with height – in place from much of Central, North and East Texas eastward into Louisiana , the SPC noted.

Severe weather could catch travelers off guard after the eclipse

While the thunderstorms held off for the main eclipse event, strong to severe thunderstorms look to cover much of what was the eclipse's path throughout much of Texas and Arkansas by Monday evening into Monday night. 

Thunderstorms and hailstorms could catch travelers off guard in what is expected to be heavy traffic through the rest of Monday as eclipse gazers head home , and it could be especially harrowing for visitors to the region with less severe weather experience. 

If caught driving in a large hailstorm, pull well off the road as driving compounds a hailstone's impact with your car. While stopping under an overpass may look enticing, safety experts say don't stop there as you may create accidents on the highway, according to hail safety tips from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation . If stopped and still exposed to hail, angle your car to where the windshield is facing the hail as windshields are reinforced to withstand forward driving and pelting objects.

The severe weather threat extends through much of the day Tuesday with nearly the same area under an ongoing Level 3 severe weather risk, with just a slight shift to the east.

The severe weather keeps shifting east through much of the week, with the Gulf Coast under threat on Wednesday and the Southeast Coast on Thursday.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
