About the Business

The West Coast Game Park Safari is proud of their ability to allow visitors a "hands on" experience with exotic and unusual animals. When visitors first enter the park gates, they will be immersed amongst hundreds of free-roaming animals for feeding and petting. They also have the freedom to walk the park to see 75 different species and over 450 animals up close. Visitors most often come away with long-lasting memories of their experiences in our presentation areas. Almost all of the park's animals have been hand-raised by Game Park staff and have grown up being handled by the public while they are young. Game Park Staff believe it's important for all of these animals to assist in educating visitors about the issues surrounding conservation and extinction. We consider these animals ambassadors for their species to you and your family, and hope that you find the interactive experience with our "family" as meaningful as we do. …

So fun!!! Slightly nerve wracking but SOOOO FUN!!!! Looks a little sketchy when u first pull up... u walk thru a sliding glass door to a small "house" to pay for admission, u can get feeding cups (ice cream cones with kibble) & then u walk out the back. U have a small area before u are bombarded with goats, llamas, dear and other small friendlier but VERY EAGER animals that will walk with u trout the park. U walk thru a gate and try to feed the animals quickly because they will grab it right out of ur hands. Watch ur fingers, maybe pick up the small children. As u walk thru the park u get a great sense of the size of the bears, see video i attached. The animals appear to be well cared for, fed & treated with kindness. We are going back again!

Animals are instantly interacting with you. One goat even went into the gift shop and had to be shoed out. We got to pet a baby snow leopard and a large Bob Cat. No extra fees for the interactions. First time I had ever seen a three horned goat from the middle East. I did enjoy this park and the man who worked here that I met, seemed to genuinely care for these animals. He spoke about raising some from when they were little. Of course I wanted to take them all home, but some of the enclosure designs where the cats could go up into tree like structures gave me ideas for my little lions at home.

Photo of Chelby S.

The lions were so skinny you could see their ribs. They seemed miserable and appeared starving :(

Currently researching who to call to get this place shut down. It was incredibly heartbreaking to see these animals in their poor health and way too small enclosures. No fresh water. Feces everywhere. Weeds and overgrowth everywhere. The 3 employees that I saw in the entire park were.......... Questionable kind of people.... The woman taking payment was very direct and rude about how much the park is suffering. It was truly bizarre to be honest. I am in disbelief this place is still going. These animals deserve so much better than this.

Our family of 5 enjoyed the park today. (2 adults, 2 teens and a 10 year old). Aside from the gift shop/entrance, everything was outdoors. We loved the experience and had a good visit seeing so many animals. I felt it was a bit spendy for entry but it's not an every day thing and I'm sure caring for the animals can be expensive so it's still worth it. The kids are already talking about next time we visit! We saw many petting zoo type animals like, goats, sheep, deer and llamas which were really fun to be around. Even while walking amongst the animals the staff kept the areas clean as they moved around the enclosures and habitats. We saw plenty of exotic animals which really enhanced the experience. The best part was being able to pet and hold a few animals up close. Today we pet a young bear and jaguar as well as an opossum and fox. We even got to hold a ferret! We will be back again. We really had a great time!

This is one of the most depressing places for animals to live. The enclosures are dirty and small. The animals have open soars on them. It's clear that these animals are not happy. This place needs to shut down!

Photo of Sami E.

Please do not go here. The animals are in enclosures that are too small and are clearly very depressed. Most of the cats were pacing back and forth and had no enrichment. When you walk in and receive a "cone" with feed and an ice cream cone, animals outside will charge you and are very aggressive. A few of our small kids were jumped on because of it. You use the cones to feed a bear, but he barely wanted to get up for them. The monkeys just gave the wall and don't interact at all. All of the animals behavior proved that they did not enjoy being here. This place overall is just unethical.

Photo of Andrea C.

So much fun even for our adult children! Can't wait to take the grandchildren some day'

Photo of nazera h.

The enclosures, for the animals are entirely too small! I let one of the staff members know that one of the deer was bleeding. She realized she would not be able to get to him since he moved to the back of the enclosure, and all the animals were eating so she said to me he'll be OK he's walking. He probably just got head butted by a goat. She didn't have any idea of how bad it was bleeding. It was nice that my kids got to see animals. I just wish they were happier. It was also nice that my children got to pet and hold animals. The lady in the front office was the rudest person I've experienced in a long time! I would recommend a completely different park I would not go here! I truly think they could do a better job.

west coast safari bandon oregon

I went here with my family thinking it would be a fun little trip to see animals. We bought our tickets and two food cups each. I'm disabled, I have to use a cane to keep myself stable and from falling over. Once I got in I was immediately swarmed by animals. My cane dropped because the animals kept jumping on me and my husband had to grab my arm to keep me from falling, so it's not an accessible facility like stated. My cane was knocked over multiple times, and now the handle has some scratches that are sharp on my hand and wiggly which is... frustrating. I was overwhelmed and started to have a panic attack after being jumped on and the other animals started hitting my hips with their heads, causing me to drop my food cups. My girlfriend had to get them away from me cause I started having a meltdown. My husband was hurt a few times by horns while he was trying to get me out of the area. I got off the property as quickly as we could. My husband went back for a refund since we spent less than 8 minutes inside and the entire time was spent trying to keep from getting hurt. We are waiting to see if they refund us or not. I don't recommend this place if you have any form of mobility aid, a physical disability, if you get overwhelmed easily or if you have small kids, they'll get hurt.

We enjoyed petting the babies and seeing the other animals. The staff worked hard to clean up after all the deer, goats, etc. had left their droppings on the paths.

I cannot believe this place is able to stay open!! The conditions these animals are forced to live in is an atrocity. Many of the animals including the lions and tigers and monkeys are living on cement and gravel with no grass, dirt or natural vegetation of any kind, They were very lethargic and seemed very low energy, The other animals that had larger areas were not much better off. the donkey walking around had a horrible coat and his hooves were in bad condition. Please please please do not support this place, It is depressing and should be shut down!!!

it cost 70 dollars for family of 4 so it was kinda expensive, but we had a lot of fun spent 4 hours there,it is a small park but there are lots animals and it is a petting zoo,you get to feed and touch a lot of animals that follow you around on the paths while you are looking at the caged animals, they brought out baby racoons and possoms for us to play with they were so cute! a goaat was born while we were there ! If you or your kids like to interact with animals this is a great place

My family and I loved going to the safari park. Lots of animals to interact with. We got to play with a baby bobcat and baby bear, which is a once in a lifetime experience. Park is well maintained and trainers are very informative. I did not give it excellent rating for another reason related to ticket prices. Found out later that they offer 10% off ticket prices to AAA members from another guest. There is no visible signs and neither did the ticket agent give us this information. As a family of 4, I do not mind saving where I can. When we told them after exiting the park area (into gift shop), they did not refund that money.

This wildlife farm is unique in that it gets you up-close and personal with the animals. You'll find deer, pigmy goats, llamas, donkeys, peacocks roaming free to pet and feed with the special food purchased in the gift shop. This farm has exotic and endangered species that you may never see elsewhere. What's more, you are very close and can look at a lioness only several feet away. But don't be scared, the enclosures are safe and properly certified by the government. But the best thing is that you can pet the babies. Yes, on the day we went, there were supervised petting visits with a baby cougar, baby bear, and baby bobcat. I'm not aware of this type of park anywhere else. The admission is affordable and the park is a 'walking park' so it can be seen in a morning or afternoon. It's not an all-day outing.

The Bandon Guide

The Comprehensive Guide for Bandon, Oregon

The Bandon Guide

Safari Park

Over 75 different species of animals including lions, bears, elk, camels and chimpanzees are on display at the West Coast Game Park Safari, just south of Bandon.  Established in 1968 as a roadside attraction featuring a few deer, it has expanded greatly over the years into the booming operation it is now, while maintaining the up close and personal feel of its beginnings.  Visitors can roam freely throughout the park feeding and petting the tame and relatively docile animals while interacting with the more dangerous animals through cage bars and camera lenses. The habitats have been designed such that people can get a closer look than they would at other zoos.

Each day, the staff, some of whom have been with the Game Park Safari for over 20 years, present interactions with “ambassador” animals. These are the featured animals of the day, and visitors can experience them up close while learning about them and their natural environments. Ambassadors have included fascinating and typically inaccessible animals such as a caracal, baby black bear, bobcat, fox and skunk.

The staff assist visitors in interacting with other, typically more inaccessible and dangerous animals as well.  Humans of all ages are seen petting skunks, raccoon, and ferrets as well as young lions, leopards, caracals, bears, and tigers.

Visitors are encouraged to purchase food for the animals roaming free, and ducks, rams, donkeys, llamas, peacocks, goats, kangaroos, deer, and geese are not bashful about approaching them for a treat.  This gives the humans an opportunity to pet and feed them.

The staff have bred and hand-raised nearly all of the over 450 animals at West Coast Game Park Safari on site. They believe that it is important to educate visitors about conservation and extinction of animals, and they use the ambassador animals at the park to assist them.

No animal park would be complete without a gift shop. Visitors can find souvenirs such as figurines, stuffed animals, mugs and magnets to help them remember their visit, as well as memory cards and batteries for cameras. Small snacks and a soda vending machine are also available.

The park is wheelchair and walker accessible, and strollers and umbrellas are offered free of charge for the day. Humans of all ages are welcome, but dogs are not. The park recommends a nearby kennel for your dog.  Group rates are available, and tickets can be purchased in advance by phone.

For those wishing to donate, the park is often in need of specific supplies for their variety of animals.  They are typically in need of items such as toys, bottles, and chains, but see their website for a current list.

The West Coast Game Park Safari is open nearly year round, and the days and hours vary with the season.

Come for the animals, but stay in Bandon, just 8 miles to the north, for a while to enjoy the many shops, restaurants and of course the spectacular beaches.  A variety of hotel options are available to make your stay more leisurely.

See The West Coast Game Park Safari’s website  or call 541-347-3106 for more information including hours, current ambassador animals, and admission prices.

Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

west coast safari bandon oregon

Bandon Marsh NWR is open seven days a week, sunrise to sunset. The winters are rainy and the summers are dry, but the temperate climate allows visitors to enjoy the outdoors year round.

At Bandon Marsh NWR, the patient observer will be rewarded with many wildlife viewing opportunities. Refuge nature trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. There are three refuge access points: Bandon Marsh Overlook at Riverside Drive, and the Ni-les'tun Marsh Viewing Platform and South Coast Office on North Bank Lane.

Boardwalk Overlook

  • Location: Bandon Marsh, Riverside Drive
  • Length:  0.02 Miles
  • Grade: Flat
  • Surface:  Boardwalk

Bandon Marsh was established as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1983 to preserve the only remaining tidal marsh in the entire Coquille River estuary. This area of the refuge can be seen from an access point located along Riverside Drive on the north side of Bandon, OR. This naturally occurring tidal marsh was the only remaining of its kind within the whole Coquille River estuary in the 1980s. Park in parallel spaces along the road and walk out along the boardwalk to the viewing platform. From the end of the platform, take in a view of the mudflats or venture forward onto the marsh. Mud flats, exposed at lower tides , provide important foraging habitat for migratory shorebirds and waders.

Ni-les'tun Marsh Trail

  • Location: Ni-les'tun Marsh, North Bank Lane
  • Length : 0.12 Miles
  • Grade : Gentle
  • Surface : Concrete and mowed grass

The area now known as Ni-les'tun Marsh was originally a Dairy Farm. Restored to tidal marsh between 2009 and 2011, it was the largest marsh restoration in the state of Oregon at the time. Today you can view the beautiful success of this restoration by visiting the Peter DeFazio Marsh Overlook on North Bank Lane north of Bandon, OR. The overlook area is underlain by a 4,500-year-old Coquille Indian campsite. The marsh trail extends south from the overlook parking area and leads into the marsh offering views of migratory birds and schools of young anadromous fish. The Ni-les'tun Marsh is open to the public though walking in the marsh itself can be difficult due to a series of ditches that can be hard to see. Use caution when accessing areas off the main trail.

Myrtlewood Grove Nature Trail

  • Location: Refuge Headquarters, North Bank Lane
  • Length: 1.0 Miles
  • Grade:  Gentle  to Moderate
  • Surface:  Grass, gravel

The Myrtlewood Grove Nature Trail, opened in December 2020, begins just north of the newly constructed Bandon Marsh office at 83673 North Bank Lane. Visitors may park in one of two available parking areas to access the trailhead. The family friendly trail is rated as easy, has a natural, sometimes muddy surface and is comprised of two connecting loops on a short spur from the trailhead. This allows hikers the choice of a 0.5- or 1.0-mile hike. The trail begins in a patch of mature Sitka spruce/Western hemlock forest with thick green understory dropping into a small freshwater pond. Hikers then come to a meadow in the midst of restoration from pasture to coniferous forest. In the center of the trail, enter a shadowy grove of old Myrtlewood trees sprouting young saplings. The trail also affords a prime view of Ni-les’tun Marsh and Bullard’s Bridge in the distance.

Other Facilities in the Complex

Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is managed as one of six Refuges in the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex. See below for the other five Refuges and experience them all.

Refuge Headquarters:

Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex 2127 SE Marine Science Drive Newport, OR 97365 541-867-4550 [email protected]

What is a Refuge Complex?

A National Wildlife Refuge Complex is a group of two or more refuges, wildlife management areas or other refuge conservation areas that are managed from one central office. Refuges are grouped into a complex because they occur in a similar ecological region, such as a watershed or specific habitat type, and have a related purpose and management needs.

The Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex is managed from our headquarters in Newport, Oregon. The office located at Bandon Marsh NWR serves as a south-coast field office.

A sleek black seabird with a white breast holds a fish in it's bill.

Rules and Policies

The refuge is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Visitors enjoy two accessible viewing points overlooking the Bandon and Ni-les'tun Marshes and the newly completed one-mile Myrtlewood Grove Nature Trail. Sport hunting and fishing are permitted on Bandon Marsh Refuge in accordance with all state and federal regulations.
