Provence has a number of major grape varietals grown throughout the region. For red wine, these grapes include  Mourvedre  (the main grape used for wine production here),  Grenache Noir ,  Syrah , Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Taniat  and  Cabernet Sauvignon . The white grape varietals grown are  Grenache Blanc, Rousanne, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourbulene, Ugni Blance or Trebbiano  and  Rolle  or  Vermentino .

Provence has ideal grape growing conditions with its Mediterranean climate. Mild winters are followed by very warm summers with little rain fall and a significant amount of sun. In fact, this area receives double the hours of sunlight needed for grapes to grow and ripen at more than 3,000 hours of sun per year.

Vines planted on the south facing slopes are offered protection from the damaging winds that can be created by the mistrals highest winds, whilst facing the seaside absorbing the sea’s spray.

One of the most predominant features that can be found in the wines made from this region is the unmistakable aromatic bouquet of lavender, juniper, thyme and rosemary — also known as Garrigue or Maquis. Other defining notes can be that of wild strawberry, raspberry, wet slate, mint, salted watermelon and candied grapefruit.

With its dreamy terrior, sun kissed skin hued wines, and rolling plains wafting of sensual herbs, Provence makes for one of the best and probably underrated places to produce wines!

What Rosé Wines Do You Recommend Drinking?

My go to is  Fleur de Mer ‘Cotes de Provence’, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah

If you are like me and swoon over Provencal Rosé’s, consider these other regions producing ‘Pink Wines” that will make you think outside of the box.

First, drive roughly 65 miles Northwest of  Marcellie . Kissing the border of the Languedoc you will find the  Tavel region  of France in the  Cotes du Rhone , wine production here is 100% Rosé.

Tavel’s major grape varietals are similar to Provence. Cinsault and Grenache make up most of the production, followed by Syrah and Mourvedre. Here you will also find a Mediterranean climate affected by Mistral winds. In the Western part of Tavel you will find slate covered with chunky limestone. In the East, you’ll find ‘galets roules’ – round stones formed from centuries of flood waters. In the South, expect to see sandy fine-grain soils. Here the wines evoke flavors of raspberry coulee, white pepper, peach, green olive and cherry.

Other regions around the world are also making fantastic Provencal-style Rosé’s!

Try the  Chateau de Trinquevedel, Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette

Let’s take a boat 90 miles from the Italian boarder into the Mediterranean Sea to the  Isle of Corsica . The island is a territorial collective of France, but for many years it belonged to Italy. Many of the region’s winemaking traditions and grape varieties are Italian in origin.

Corsica’s terrain is mountainous, with soils rich in schist, granite, chalky limestone and clay. Most of the islands vineyards are perched along the coastlines. The vines receive an ideal amount of sun per year, at about 2,750 hours.

Major grape varitals grown here are the Nielluccio (ancestor of the Sangeovese), Grenache, Sciacarello and Vermentino. These Rosé’s are produced in the Saignee method. Corsican wines are unlike any you have had with the same grape make up. These wines have notes of green olive brine, fig, chamomile and plum.

My favorite Rosé is from  Maestracci ‘E Prove’, Nielluccio and Sciacarello

Let’s now make our way to the Russian River Valley in  Sonoma County California . Soils here consist of sandstone, loam – “Goldridge soil”, clay and alluvial.

Resting in the heart of Sonoma County near the rugged terrain of the Pacific Ocean you will find the Russian River Valley. This region is known for warm day time temperatures and brisk evening fog rolling off of the Petaluma Gap. Sonoma is famous for its  Chardonnay  and  Pinot Noir , and arguably put the New World on the map for these varietals.

Or should we say Mike's Wine Safari. Because this concept has been within Mike Rijken ever since he began working in France. After finishing hotel school in Bavaria, he puts his first footsteps in 1983 in Paris. There, he learned the language, and took courses at the Wine Academy of Steven Spurrier. Briefly, he returned to Holland and worked in a one-star Michelin retaurant as Chef de Partie. In 1984, he worked in the heart of Burgundy (Beaune). His multiple talents served well in the kitchen and restaurants of a chain of Brasseries. In Burgundy, he led wine tours from the Hotel Le Cep (in Beaune), into Puligny-Montrachet and Pommard. Although he worked for hotels and restaurants in Holland, and helped to manage a wine importation business, his heart has remained in France, serving as a link and spiritual guide between the French, and visitors interested in the best of wine and gastronomy. After meeting his Dutch wife, Vivian, in Burgundy, they moved to the south of France. For 13 years, Mike was the hospitality / pr manager for the prestigious Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The family Perrin sent him around Europe and the USA - whenever a good word was needed. With his background as a chef ; superb tasting skill ; and fluency in four languages, he can immediately explain why a wine may complement certain food ; what influences the wine ; how they may develop etc. Most important, his personality and experience make his wine discourses a fun and rewarding pleasure for beginners and experts alike. Among the popular wine regions of France, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Alsace, which are known as the Big Five, Provence is not mentioned. In recent years Provence has started to produce the best rosés in the country, putting it on the map as a major player for one of the top wine regions in France. 

Provence also produces high-quality white and red wine, plus excellent sparkling rosé. The growing conditions, including the rich soil with clay and limestone, plenty of sunshine, hills, and the Mediterranean climate, make Provence an ideal setting for vineyards to flourish. Bandol, which comes from the southeast near Marseille and Cassis, covering a very small region of fewer than 4,000 acres, is best known for its rich-bodied red wine, using the Mourvèdre grape, also grown in Spain, southern Australia, and California. 

1. Domaine De Fontenille, Lauris 

Located in the Luberon region of Provence, in the village of Lauris, Domaine de Fontenille is an all-encompassing wine, culinary, and luxury hotel experience. 

The vineyard dates from 1600 and is laid out on 97 acres of prime Provence soil. Domaine De Fontenille produces certified organic wines along with the latest technology to produce their superior products. The rich soil containing limestone and clay, along with slopes that attract the sun at an advantageous angle, produce the Luberon PDO grape which provides a rich taste.

The various wine tasting experiences at Fontenille include a visit with an onsite wine professional who will guide you through the different stages of how the wines are produced. You will visit the cellar where the wines are blended, and sample a tasting of numerous wines at the end, for around $20 a person. At a workshop you learn the step by step process to use your senses to recognize the subtle flavors and scents, so you can know how to match wine to the food you are eating, and later, a tour of the vineyard, where you are shown how the grapes are grown is accompanied by a picnic lunch under the shade of an olive tree. 

Domaine De Fontenille has a luxury hotel housed in a former château, with 19 luxuriously appointed rooms, a wellness center with relaxing massages, scrubs, and facials, and an outdoor, heated swimming pool. Dining choices include the one-star Michelin Le Champ des Lunes, where Chef Michel Marini focuses on modern French cuisine with ingredients sourced in the Luberon, La Cuisine d’Amélie, a bistro on the expansive terrace overlooking the lush gardens of the property, and a full breakfast also outside at Le Grande Table des Petits-Déjeuners. 

If you don’t want to stay overnight but want to still enjoy all the amenities, Domaine De Fontenille offers a package with a spa treatment of your choice, use of the swimming pool and chaise lounges, and lunch at the more informal bistro La Cuisine d’Amélie for $242 per person. 

2. Château De Berne, Flayosc

On par with Domaine De Fontenille, Château de Berne is another winery with luxury accommodations and gourmet restaurant but is in the Vars region. 

The award-winning vineyard has been around since 1750 and located on a massive property of over 1,350 acres, scaling up to 1,100 feet of the hills of the Massif des Maures area. An extended area of the property has 300 acres of other vines and olive trees. Château De Berne prides itself on its exceptional rosé wines but also produces fine red, white, and sparkling wines. 

The winery is open every day, year round, and there are several tasting options such as an express, 60- minute visit to the wine cellar that includes three tastings with a savory toast topped with olive tapenade and anchovies. A more extensive visit — 2.5 hours — includes touring the vineyards, seeing the wine-producing caves, and tastings of six wines, and the top of the line, where you taste four of its most exclusive estate wines in a private room in the five-star hotel attached to the winery, and the head chef of the Michelin star restaurant will prepare special treats to accompany your wines. 

The original château built in the 18th century has been transformed into a five-star, Relais & Château hotel in a magnificent setting of vineyards, ancient trees, and rolling hills. You can relax on a chaise by the outdoor pool and also wind down with a massage, or body treatment at the expansive, 10,000 square foot, Le Cinq Mondes Spa, which also features two Jacuzzis, an indoor swimming pool, steam room, sauna, and relaxation area, serving soothing, herbal tea. If you are feeling more active, there’s a 1200-acre park with hills, rocks, streams, and farmland to hike in, electric bikes for mountain biking with four, marked paths, and a fitness suite with state-of-the-art cardio and weight machines. The hotel has partnered with a local golf course for its guests to play. 

Foodies can get their culinary fix with an exclusive cooking class or go behind the scenes in the kitchen to watch where chef Louis Rameau creates his magical meals. In the warmer months, dine on the sun-drenched La Terrasse de Berne with dishes prepared with herbs and vegetables from its garden. The more formal restaurant, Le Jardin de Berne, offers five and seven-course dinners and an optional wine pairing with each course. 

3. Château De Saint Martin, Taradeau

A historically relevant vineyard, Chateau De Saint Martin has been owned by the same family since 1740, and the roots are traced back thousands of years to 200 B.C. with Roman remains that were discovered in the 1990s. In the 12th century, monks produced wine and built cellars that are still in use. 

Château De Saint Martin not only caters to oenophiles with their wine tastings, but also offers wine pairings with chocolate, cheese, and local food products. 

Located about 60 minutes from the Côte d’Azur in the south of France, Château De Saint Martin is 45 miles from Nice and even closer to Toulon (25 miles). 

4. Château La Coste, Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade

The tradition of winemaking in Provence extends back to the Roman times in France in the second and third centuries and Chateau La Coste still uses ancient winemaking traditions, combined with modern-day techniques. The small winemaking house, near Aix-en-Provence, which began in 1682, has an estate with 300 acres of vineyards mixed with cypress, oak, and olive trees on the rich soil that produces organic grapes. 

Château La Coste is best known for its Côte de Provence rosé wine but also stocks a good selection of white and red wine. 

A state-of-the-art cellar with steel, temperature-controlled vats, was launched in 2008 and designed by award-winning, French architect Jean Nouvel. Wine tasting workshops are given by its wine experts and last 2.5 hours. 

Another great reason to visit Château La Coste is for its impressive architecture and art collection. World-renowned artists and architects including Tadao Ando, Sophie Calle, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Frank Gehry, Sean Scully, and Ai Weiwei have contributed works in past years. You can book a self-guided walk of the art installations as you wander through the olive groves, vineyards, and the woods. Currently, there’s an Alberto Giacometti exhibition through September 12, 2021. 

Villa La Coste, a fabulous luxury hotel, is also part of the winery. Offering 29 spacious suites with outdoor terraces, the smallest room measures 1,000 square feet and the Villa suite measures 3,000 square feet with a 120-foot-long terrace, private pool, dining room, two bedrooms and bathrooms, and a living room. 

The Villa La Coste spa uses locally grown products for its treatments including lavender, apricot, jasmine, rose, and olives. Its signature treatment is a Himalayan salt and mud scrub. 

Among the various restaurants at Villa La Coste, the standout is the one with the multi, award-winning chef Helene Darroze, who has won five Michelin stars for her restaurants in France and in London. 

5. Le Domaine de Marie, Ménerbes 

This petit winery, on just 57 acres, Le Domaine de Marie is rather new, just opened in 2000 by Jean-Louis Sibuet, a devoted wine lover and connoisseur. Located near the ancient, scenic villages of Gordes and Bonnieux, Sibuet took the painstaking task of bringing the vineyard up to modern-day standards with the latest technology including stainless steel storage vats that are temperature controlled for the most accurate fermentation.

Le Domaine de Marie offers restaurant dining for lunch and dinner, indoors and outdoors, afternoon tea serving local specialties, and a happy hour menu. 

There are also overnight accommodations ranging from rooms to suites to a converted farmhouse nearby for rent with five bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room, terrace, and private swimming pool.

Wine Safari - Provence

Contacted Mike Rijken based on RS Europe for our cruise stop in Marseille and a wine tour of Provence for our group of 9. After numerous communications with Mike Rijken, we were excited for the first stop on our cruise in Marseille. Unfortunately, Mike never showed up at the port. Claimed his car broke down and had to cancel. Since we were traveling without access to email, we were unaware of this development as Mike apparently tried to contact us. He did not however attempt to make any alternate arrangements for our group, and as a result we had to scramble make our own arrangements with the help of the information desk at the port and a few taxi drivers.

We had our own "wine safari" but without the help of Mike Rijken.

Very disappointed!!!

Well, stuff often happens but you seem to have dealt with it pretty well. As for Mike making "alternate arrangements" for you all, he couldn't contact you because you were not accessible. If he had made alternate arrangements, how could he know you would accept them?

Thanks for posting this. I am planning to return to Provence and do a wine tour and he was a consideration. On the bright side, at least the car broke down before your tour started and not during :) Impressive you were able to think quickly, hustle your own tour together and enjoy the region!

Being curious about why he didn't just jump into a taxi and meet you at the port, I Googled his name. Seems he lives north of Avignon, almost as far away as Orange, almost two hours away from the Marseille port. Furthermore, his website says he lives in a place called Aubignan, not a town most of us have heard of and not one that would have car rentals, trains, and taxis. So if something happens with his service and you are unreachable, there's not much to be done. I suppose he could have asked someone to take him to Avignon to catch a train to Marseille and get a taxi to the port from there if his car broke down early enough to allow him that option.

On the other hand, I'm surprised that not one person in the group of 9 had a cell phone that would work in France, nor have access to email since most ships offer internet service. These do cost extra, but sometimes they are worth it. He took a leap of faith making arrangements with people who were unreachable.

The term "claimed" is loaded, as I'm sure you'd agree if someone were to say "claimed they didn't have internet." I'm sure you wouldn't want your assertions characterized as claims. He should be given the same courtesy.

It would be nice if the OP were to come back and admit that he was mostly at fault in the situation. Since he had chosen to travel without a phone or email access for his party of 9, what would he have done if circumstances had obliged HIM to cancel the tour? I do think Mike's name has been unjustly defamed.

When you are in the service business you ALWAYS make sure that the customer is taken care of. I took a leap of faith in booking the tour for our group based on Rick Steve's recommendation. I did the same for all our other tours and was very pleased. Our group was in Marseille for one day looking for a great experience - this did not happen.

• If the 1 hr. (or 5???) drive was too far for Mr. Rijken, then he shouldn't have accepted the tour. Perhaps he should stop taking tours from all cruise ships that dock in Marseille.
• If Mr. Rijken had asked for a cell phone number (as all of the other tours that I booked for our cruise had) he would have been given one.
• I am quite certain, that however remote Mr. Rijken's home location is, that there is a rental agency between his location and Marseille willing to rent vehicles. Marseille is quite large (2nd largest city in France). Mini Buses are available for rent.
• We asked one of the excursion guides (provence wine tours) who was waiting for his party to contact his office. They were not able to accommodate us due to the late time, but insisted had they known a day in advance they could have accommodated us. This call could have been made my Mr. Rijken.
• We were reached by message on board the ship by family members who called Holland America. Apparently Mr. Rijken was unable to navigate this process.
• When our group was left stranded at the port, we FOUND a cell phone to call Mr. Rijken. Had we had an issue, we would have been able to contact him.

I'm sure Wine Safari offers a great tour otherwise they would not have been listed in RS Europe. But when you leave a customer in a foreign country that does not speak your language without a contingency plan, you should not be in the service business.

Mr. Rijken was willing to accept our tour fee, but not the implied responsibility of being in the excursion business.
