Considered a destination from a fairy tale by all travelers, Yemen is the Mecca for intrepid adventurers, the one destination that has always awed each and every visitor for its rawness and untouched culture combined with a jaw-dropping architecture and mesmerizing valleys.

Yemen is the most legendary Arab country.

Yemen is currently in a state of civil war. The majority of that fighting takes place in the west of the country and there is very limited conflict in the Hadramut region. Security conditions can change and we must state that the local team have the final word with regards to changes in the itinerary for safety reasons.

Since 2014 a bloody civil war has taken place throughout the county, however the end of conflict seems to be just on the horizon, with peace talks between the Houthis and Saudis becoming more and more common. While the western part of the country where Sana’a the capital is, is still considered too dangerous for travellers, the eastern part bordering Oman is now ok for travel and has so much to offer! Yemen contains amazing elements of both Arabia and Africa and has some amazing architectural, geological and historical sites to explore. On top of this Yemen’s food is some of the best in the region. As the country stabilises, we see a bright future for Yemen and hope that more and more of the country becomes available to visit.

7-day Yemen itinerary

8 am morning pick-up in Salalah (hotel or airport). Drive to the border of Oman and Yemen. The Yemen border crossing is usually hassle-free, but unfortunately, it is very unpredictable how long it takes to cross, from 30 minutes to 4 hours. You have to be flexible on this first day of your trip. Your guide will try his best to have a good time and start presenting you with the country, explaining the history and local culture. After crossing the border, and if you have time, our guide will make sure you go to the local qat market, and you will enjoy a local restaurant before heading to the hotel and rest, preparing yourself for the next day. Overnight in Saba Tourist Hotel .

yemen travel tour

Today we traverse part of the Yemeni Rub’ al Khali desert until we reach the city of Tarim. The first stop will be to visit Nabi Hud Shrine, one of Yemen’s most significant pilgrimage sites. The religious site runs around graves and the shrine of the prophet Hud. The panoramic panorama from the top of the mountain is spectacular and worth the climb. While you visit Yemen , these are the type of places you will enjoy seeing the Yemen people’s way of life. Upon arrival in Tarim, visit the famous Al-Muhdhar Mosque and the local qat market. Overnight in Pearl Hotel .

yemen travel tour

After breakfast, we start our journey deep into Hadhramaut’s heart, and we start the day with a quick visit to the Qabr Ahmad al Habashi, the mausoleum of an important Yemeni religious figure. Dress appropriately, don’t stand out, and although you cannot go inside the mosque, profit to go up the stairs to see the fantastic view of the mosque from above after we head to Shibam, undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trip and probably one of the main reasons you book a Yemen tour in the first place. The Old Walled City of Shibam is a 16th-century mud-brick city and the oldest metropolis in the world to use vertical construction. The mud-brick buildings reach up to sixteen flights. There are no words to describe such a place. The total number of buildings in Shibam is 444. The highest building is 29 meters high. Finally, we reach Seiyun, located in the middle of the Hadhramaut Valley and the biggest and most important city in the area. Overnight in Alahqaf Tourist Hotel .

yemen travel tour

This is the day to fully explore the stunning Wadi Dawan Desert Valley. This gorgeous valley is renowned for its beauty, with an extensive open area with desert, rocky cliffs, and scenic mud-brick villages. You will have the chance to visit the two most important towns, Al-Hajarayn and Sif. Besides Shibam, these two desert towns are our favorite in terms of architecture. You can explore both towns on your own and notice how friendly the people are. What to see in Al-Hajarayn: Mountain viewpoint, wooden doors and windows, main mosque, and the entrance gate. What to see in Sif: Mountain viewpoint, mosque, the old city, Al-Amoudi Musnaah house, Mohammad Ba-Ali house, Al-Mshaekh A’al Hasan Ben Badr house, and Jahlan mosque. Overnight in Hayd Aljazeel Resort with a swimming pool and fabulous views over Hayd Aljazeel village.

yemen travel tour

After breakfast and enjoying the views of the rock village below, we start our day heading towards the coast of Yemen. We will reach Al-Mukalla, founded in 1035 as a fishing settlement. This is Yemen’s biggest eastern city and the gate to the historical Hadhramaut region to the north. Visit the Waterfront of Al Mukalla, the incredible Al-Ghwayzi Fort, the port area, and Mae’en sultan’s palace, now converted into a museum. Overnight in Grand Yemen Tourist Hotel .

After a small Al Mukalla city tour, you start your Yemen road trip along the Arabian Sea. From Al-Mukalla, you are taken to the city of Al-Ghaydah. The landscapes are impressive, with a mix of giant sand dunes and rocky mountains, wild camels, and little white-painted villages. Overnight in Gulf Stars Tourist Hotel .

yemen travel tour

Last day of your trip, and hopefully, we will cross the southern Yemen-Oman border quickly without any issues. Again, borders in this part of the world are very unpredictable, and we can’t determine an exact duration of how long it will take. Count from 1 hour to 4 hours in the worst-case scenario. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Salalah (not included). Don’t book a flight out of Oman on the day of arrival from Yemen. We must ensure you get your flight back home and can afford a few-hours delay to arrive in Salalah. Book a hotel in Salalah in advance.

Please make sure you get them well in advance. Some of our clients had difficulties getting USD bills at the last minute. You can also pay in Euros (20, 50, and 100), carrying the new banknotes that entered into circulation in 2019, called the Euro Europa series. The exchange rate of EURO and USD in Yemen is 1 to 1.

Due to current financial limitations in Yemen, we are currently only able to accept cash payments upon arrival. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience and we assure you that we are making every effort to find a solution. We anticipate having an update on this matter in the coming weeks, most likely later this month or early February. In the meantime, please rest assured that we will do our best to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for your trip to Yemen and any other destinations in our portfolio.

Yemen is not a normal country and it is not prepared with the normal touristic facilities. Although we try to give you the best hotels in Yemen, sometimes security and going off-grid is more important than offering you the best hotel in town.

We understand that the drive from Salalah to Seiyun may seem long, but I want to assure you that this is the best way to guarantee fixed dates for entry and departure into Yemen. While the journey may be lengthy, travelling in Yemen by land ensures you can enter and exit the country on the exact dates you have planned. On the other hand, traveling by air can be unpredictable, as flights may not always arrive or depart on schedule. To ensure your safety and a smooth trip, I strongly recommend the land route, even though it may take longer. Rest assured that the long hours on the road will be worth it when you experience the beauty of Yemen.

Felucca boats sailing on the River Nile, at Aswan. Trees are dotted among the buildings in the background.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.
