2003 Ford Excursion review: Our expert's take
Posted on 12/9/02 Vehicle Overview Shoppers looking for the largest sport utility vehicle in any showroom must turn to Ford. The Excursion measures nearly 19 feet long thats nearly 21 inches longer than the companys full-size Expedition, and it is more than 7 inches longer than its next closest rivals, the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.
Built on the same platform as Fords F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, the Excursion exceeds an 8,500-pound gross vehicle weight rating (the vehicles weight plus what it can carry in passengers and cargo), which makes it exempt from federal emissions and fuel-economy requirements. Ford has been promoting environmental concerns in connection with its SUV lineup, which includes an announcement that the Excursion qualifies as a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV).
Environmentalists have never stopped jeering at the jumbo Excursion, citing its close-to-insatiable fuel consumption. The standard 44-gallon fuel tank is indicative of the vehicles unappetizing gas mileage, though Ford emphasizes the fact that it gives the vehicle a long range between fill-ups.
The Excursion comes with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (4WD). A new Eddie Bauer series joins the XLT and Limited models for 2003, and they will feature an Arizona Beige grille insert and fascias. Early in 2003, a new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine will debut, and it will deliver 325 horsepower and 550 pounds-feet of torque. A new TorqShift five-speed-automatic transmission will accompany that diesel engine. New 16-inch forged wheels and an in-dash six-CD changer go on the Limited edition, and all A-pillars on the drivers side gain grab handles.
Despite rising fuel prices in 2000 and into 2001, Fords behemoth SUV managed to sell well enough. But total sales for 2001 dipped by 31.7 percent to just 34,710 units, as reported by Automotive News . In July 2002, Ford sources acknowledged that production of the Excursion will end after the 2004 model year.
Exterior Even though the Excursion is abundantly sized, traditional SUV styling includes four side doors. Ford claims that the Excursions back doors are wider than those on the Suburban for easier access to the middle and rear seats. The rear door is a tri-panel arrangement, which features a window on top that flips up and twin Dutch doors below that open to the sides. A BlockerBeam runs across the vehicle below the front bumper to prevent cars from sliding underneath it in the event of a collision.
Aluminum wheels hold 16-inch tires. The Excursion rides a 137.1-inch wheelbase, stretches 226.7 inches long overall and has an 8.1-inch ground clearance. Two-wheel-drive (2WD) models are 77.2 inches high, vs. 80.2 inches high for the 4×4 editions. A standard trailer hitch provides similar protection at the rear.
Interior The Excursion has a nine-passenger capacity, plus 48 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seat. The seats of the second-row split bench tip and fold forward to allow easier access to the third row. The rear bench seat is removable and rolls on built-in wheels. The cargo volume grows to 146 cubic feet with the rear seat removed and the middle bench folded down; that space can carry a 4-by-8-foot plywood sheet. Optional power-adjustable accelerator and brake pedals adjust within a 3-inch range to suit individual drivers.
Under the Hood Three engines are available in the Excursion. A 255-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 is standard on 2WD models. A 310-hp, 6.8-liter V-10 goes into 4WD models and is optional on 4x2s, and an optional 7.3-liter V-8 turbo-diesel produces 250 hp. These engines team with a four-speed-automatic transmission. A new 325-hp Power Stroke 6.0-liter diesel will arrive during the 2003 model year; it will team with a new five-speed-automatic transmission. The Excursions towing capacity is as high as 11,000 pounds with the V-10 or diesel engine.
Safety Antilock brakes are standard, but side-impact airbags are not available.
Driving Impressions Describing the drive in an Excursion is easy: Youre in a truck, period. Expect the typical engine and transmission drone found in trucks, coupled with ride quality that bears little resemblance to a passenger car. Fords newly redesigned Expedition yields a far more pleasing experience overall including more satisfactory acceleration and the slightly smaller model has enough interior space to suit most buyers.
The Excursions new Power Stroke diesel engine performs admirably, but it enhances the sensation of being in a full-fledged truck. A Power Stroke diesel Excursion managed to climb some steep grades but at a leisurely pace.

2003 EXCURSION 6.0 Good or Bad?
- Add to quote
Please help! We just bought an 03 Ford X with a 6.0. This is our first Ford and first diesel. Now we are hearing that we possibly made a mistake. It has 80,000 miles and the history shows the main problem with this rig has been the egt valves. No other major problems. Should we return it? We have a 10 day trial exchange. Do any of you have one? Tell me the good and the bad, Please!
I don’t have any personal experience with the 6.0 but my buddy had head gasket issues with his. Ford ended up replacing the head bolts with studs. However, it was my understanding that everything was covered under the warranty. If it were me I would at least research the extended 7 year 200,000 mile warranty that is being offered right now. This link will help you in your research about the warranty. http://forums.thedieselstop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1436211&fpart=1
Rob- Although I have not owned a 2003 or later Excursion with the 6.0, I have several friends that have. All have gone back to the 7.3 equipped Excursions (2 of the 3 found early '03's with the 7.3). There were a lot of problems with the '03's with 6.0 especially, and some wound up being returned under lemon laws. I have a good friend that owns a succesful large late-model used truck-only dealership just a few miles from my home, and he always has an Ex or 2 on his lot, but never a 6.0. He looks for the best low mileage 7.3's only, and if a 6.0 is traded in, he sends it to auction rather than retailing it. I know there are a lot of folks including those on this forum that swear by them, but I am on my 2nd Excursion with the 7.3, and it has been as trouble-free as the first. If I were in your shoes, I would be VERY patient in a search for a low mileage 7.3 Limited Ultimate from either late '02 or '03 (southern states/Texas) and return the one you have. The 7.3 is well proven and reliable and I would have a hard time going to something that has had a questionable reputation at best. If you must have a newer one, at least get into a late '04 or '05 since most of the 6.0 bugs had been worked out by that time. Just my 2 cents, of course. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Jim
Yes, I have one and I love it. I have just under 118K miles on mine now and I have had no real significant problems. I was concerned based on some of what I had read here, but I had a friend at Ford pull an OASIS report that showed no problems in the first 65k miles (which is when I bought it). My wife and I use it for our 2500 mile round trips to Florida and back several times a year and I use if for pulling my enclosed car trailer (10,000+lbs loaded). When not pulling and if I am easy on the throttle, I can get 20+ MPG but normal is between 16 and 18. Pulling the big trailer I get 12 to 14. I have made no modifications to my engine, nor do I plan to, it works great for me the way it is. It seems alot of people like the 7.3 because of the number of ways it can be modified.
I had an 03 6.0L and traded it in with 73,000 trouble free miles for my current 05 6.0L. There were a lot of injector issues with the early 03 engines due to the injectors being installed improperly. That issue is behind your X. If they were put in bad they would have acted up long ago. The EGR valve gets dirty on all engines with one. With ULSD it will be less of an issue. However, a repeated replacement of the EGR valve most likely is telling you the EGR cooler maybe leaking. All of this is covered by 100K warranty. If you are going to keep it a long time look at the 200K warranty. There is a thread on the main 6.0L power train page. RoyC
I also have a 2003 6.0L Excursion, however with only about 60,000 miles on it. It has been a great truck with only the EGR and harness being replaced under warranty. Everyone has stories, but there are a lot of 6.0Ls out there without problems also. Truck is great for hauling family, baseball team, boat, etc. It has been a great truck. My only issue with it, is it sometimes too big as I use it as a daily driver also.
I sold my 2003 6.0 Excursion a month ago and it was perfect the four years or so I had it. I also had a 2000 7.3 Excursion before it but the 6.0 would blow the doors off of it. The 7.3 with 4-speed AT was a slug compared to the 6.0 with 5-speed Torqshift.
Thank you very much for your replies!! We are still taking everyone's opinions and will make our decision in a couple of days. So far we love the rig and it will be hard to give it back!! We welome any other comments you may have. Thanks! Rob
Don't listen to the few with problems that fill up these forums with there complaining. Most of them put chips and over fuel these with flash devices. Very few have problems not related to modifications this late. These engines like to work so load it from time to time and you will be fine. Buy a used one that has not been modified. Stay away from the ads that say a tuner or chip is included or has been used. Good luck!

Code p132B I an not able to relearn Vgt I have no intake leaks no exhaust leaks my fuel pressure is 55psi wot I am using fords IDS for diag I am pulling my hair out please help
Google:
I have replaced the turbo with a ford reman Turbo replaced cac cooler replaced map sensor Truck has 250 thousand on the odometer truck was running great shut truck off went in to the store came out started truck and took off no power no boost like someone shut of a light switch
Check the harness for damage at the turbo -- lots of heat there and the insulation gets brittle
My vgt is cycling and working properly performed pinpoint for map and maf all checked it fine
On vehicles built before Sept 29, 2003 (PCM ignores EBP sensor input and infers the value from the MAP and MAF sensors). On these vehicles, the MAF is used for fuel correction. The PCM will learn MAP and MAF and then learn the VGT action by cycling the VGT duty cycle in steps from 85% to 0%, and then back up, again in steps. It will learn the MAP and MAF action during this process. It takes 6 cycles to learn the VGT. P132b will be set if the PCM determines that there is something wrong with what it learned for MAP and MAF as it relates to VGT duty cycle. Maybe a MAF sensor issue? Still might be a VGT actuator issue - I assume that the rebuilt turbo did NOT come w/ a new VGT actuator?
Should be able to force a VGT relearn on those models ..correct?
Yes. He should be able to do that.
Heading home to inspect map vgt and maf readings will post my results thank you guys for your inputs Bismic you are correct no it did not come with on but one is on order

Help please
I don't understand Baro volts at 4.6, can you get a Baro pressure reading in addition to the volts? Do you still have an functional EGR system? If so, maybe the EGR valve is plugged up. You also might try unlugging the EBP and seeing if that helps. Lastly, post up the v-reference voltage (KOEO, cranking, idle).
I have an 03 build date of 04/03. I had similar issues about 12 years ago, I can't remember what was wrong back then, OLD AGE!!! Anyway, I think I had a small tear in the boot hot side, dunno for sure, sorry. FYI, I have a S&B after market intake; the 132b code is always present, truck runs fantastic!! The code use to bug me, but someone told me it was cus of the intake, someone here. IIRC the problem was intermittent, wish I would have written it down, so I could help. "Sitting watching vgtdc varying from 85% to 15% and vgtlrn-CNC no " Have to be at operating temp(180+) before the count will "count" Here is a vid that may help https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=196&v=I3pvKfE8uts
I have a functioning egr it is new performed baro pin out all checkers out good Back pressure sensor is new removed tube from manifold and cleaned it and reinstalled it Vref v 4.99 Playing around koer now throwing code p2263
P2263 - Stuck turbo, MAP sensor, MAP hose plugged or leaking, CAC hose disconnected or leaking, intake leaks, exhaust restriction, exhaust leaks, EBP sensor or EBP tube plugged, or bad VGT solenoid. This code is set when MGP does not go over 15kPa or 2.2 psi when the following conditions are met: rpm must be over 2800; VFDES above 35; and EGRVP above 0.10. All of these conditions must be met for 5 seconds for the code to be set. This code is also used to detect a charge air cooler hose that has become disconnected. This code can also be set if there is ANY condition that would produce low power. 2003 engines that have been reflashed will not have issues with the EBP tube being plugged as the 06E17 action (flash) eliminated the EBP input and the EBP is now inferred.
Ok today’s update I needed to change my Oil cooler So I tore down top of engine again removed the oil cooler and high pressure pump Replaced them while apart I put my intake in a hot tank parts cleaner and totally cleaned it and some other parts while apart I opened up the turbo again unison ring moves so easy opened up the plunger for the vgt actuator and checked the indexing of it it is spot on put truck all back together again fired up the truck let it run to operating temp cleared codes with ids I monitored all vgt pids on my IDS still can’t get it to learn I cleared codes performed koeo no codes ran a koer it popped up a p 2263 code can’t understand vgt is clean replaces vgt solenoid new map sensor new cac cooler new hpop new oil cooler new back pressure sensor no exhaust leaks or intake leake pressure tested both any ideas
While rebuilding the top end I ran the truck with the valve covers off and noticed oil leaking from the the injector cups is it possible that the injectors aren’t receiving enough oil pressure to supply the engine with the fuel it needs at idle to Perdue boost at idle
Remove the MAP sensor hose and look it over VERY closely, if you haven't already done so. I would still like to see the Baro value (not volts, but pressure).
I replaced the map hose my map psi koeo is 14.75 Koer 14.57 to 14.65 at idle at 2k rpm 14.50 psi at 3 k 14.75 psi
Not surprising - that is why you are getting the P2263 code. No increase in MAP. MAP should be at least 17 psia at 3000 rpm. What pinpoint test did you do for the MAP sensor? Did your pressure testing of the intake include the CAC itself (charge air cooler)? Sometimes they can blow a seal. Edit - I just re-read the thread and saw that you replaced the CAC. With all that you have said has been checked (and re-checked) I have a hard time believing that the new turbo is functioning properly AND that you have no leaks. Seems like the issue is one or the other. The only thing I haven't seen replaced is the MAF sensor. I am NOT recommending replacing it at this point. You said you did a pinpoint test on it as well. What test was it that you performed? Your posted value at idle appeared good.

That is a great Article to read and Diagnostic info map and maf has been changed playing around I took a pice of synflex tubing and a rubber hose and a small basketball pump and an old map sensor and applied pressure to the map watching my pids on ids I was able to get the vgt to say ok to learn when removing pressure from the pump the pid stayed ok and disconnected secondary map and reconnect it to the map mounted in the truck power break the truck and I have boost just like before all the problems started went for a ride all normal shut off truck and back to no boost that’s why I feel the problem is base engine performance
Bismic if ya would like to talk on phone my cell is 347 539 2981 I live in NY
Sorry - I don't do well on the phone - bad case of tinnitus. If your ICP and IPR values are in range, then you don't have an oil leak (high pressure oil) issue. If your injector contribution test (on IDS) doesn't show any issues, then your problem lies elsewhere. Not sure I understand what you are saying about injector cups leaking oil.

The Ford Excursion Answered the Suburban’s Call and Raised it a Super Duty Diesel Engine
The gigantic size and power of the Ford Excursion took the full-size SUV market by storm. No longer was the Chevy Suburban the only game in town; now, Ford had its own behemoth to offer. Although this massive Ford SUV only survived six model years, it captured our attention, and many still roam the earth in relative tranquility to this day. The Ford Excursion just wants to be left alone to do its job, hauling families and all their gear from place to place.
What made the Ford Excursion popular?
The height of the large SUV craze hit at the same time that Ford was bringing its new Ford F-250 Super Duty truck to the market. This truck platform serves as the foundation of the Excursion , which gave the world a new, massive SUV sitting above the Expedition.
Many versions of the Excursion came with impressive upgrades as part of the standard package, including leather seats, cruise control, power mirrors, a CD player, and the choice of three drivetrains. This big SUV quickly became a hit, with more than 50,000 models sold in the first year.
Why did Ford stop making this massive SUV?
The initial sales figures showed great promise for the Excursion, but instead of growing, sales quickly declined. By 2005, which was the last year for the Excursion, Ford barely sold 16,000 models. Those who wanted this SUV bought it, and that was the end. Today, you can find some used Ford Excursion models for sale at relatively affordable prices, but these SUVs are now twenty years old.
Some people are still crazy about the Ford Excursion
The used car market might be a bit nuts, although it’s calmed down in the past several months. Spending extra for an older vehicle seems reckless. Still, CarScoops reported a year ago that a Ford Excursion with 101,000 miles on the odometer sold for $67,500. This was nearly $30,000 more than the original asking price of this Ford SUV.
While we won’t venture a guess at value, the Excursion in question features a massive 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. This Ford SUV has 4WD and has been well-kept for the past couple of decades, but it might not be worth the price paid to anyone but the new owner.
How much power did the Ford Excursion offer?
During its time, this immense Ford SUV had four engines which were:
5.4-liter Triton V8 – 255 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque
6.8-liter Triton V10 – 310 horsepower, 425 lb-ft of torque
7.3-liter Power Stroke Turbodiesel V8 (2000-2003) – 250 horsepower, 525 lb-ft of torque
6.0-liter Power Stroke Turbodiesel V8 (2003-2005)) – 325 horsepower, 560 lb-ft of torque
The diesel engines could tow up to 11,000 pounds, and the gas models offered as much as 7,000 pounds of towing capacity. Only the 6.0-liter Power Stroke engine used a five-speed automatic transmission; all others used a four-speed version to send power to either the rear or all four wheels, depending on the configuration.
How big is this Ford SUV?
The Ford Excursion was the biggest and heaviest mass-produced full-size SUV when it entered production. This big brute is 226.7 inches long with a 137.1-inch wheelbase. The width is 80.0 inches, and the height is 77.2 inches for 4WD models and 74.8 inches for RWD versions. In a nutshell, this beast is massive, offering up to nine seats and tons of cargo room for everything you need to take with you.
Should you avoid any Ford Excursion models?
If you’re searching for a Ford Excursion for sale, you might want to avoid versions with the Triton V8 engine. This engine is known to throw spark plugs because the threading in the block wasn’t drilled deep enough to avoid this problem.
Besides versions with the Triton V8 engine, the Ford Excursion is basically bulletproof, which is probably why we still see them on the road twenty years later.

As stated in ancient chronicles, in 1147, Prince Yury Dolgoruky invited his relative, Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich, to see him in Moscow, which was a small castle lost in the boundless Russian forest. Thus, the history of Russia's most important political, economic, cultural, and scientific center began. In the 12th century, Moscow turned into a fortress. By the 13th century, it was already a town, and in the 15th century, Moscow became the capital of the Russian State. Today Moscow, with its history, architectural masterpieces, and innumerable art treasures, has found itself in a whirlpool of global currents determining world development. People worldwide come to witness Moscow's splendors and fall for the charm the capital of the largest empire on earth certainly possesses.

Tank ride & bazooka Moscow
Only in Russia!
Ask us for availabilities
Starts at 9am
Duration: 1 day
Tour available in
Want to ride a tank? Of course you do.
Welcome to Russia, where everything and anything is possible—especially riding on a tank, shooting an AK-47 and a bazooka, all while drinking vodka.
At Put-in tours, we have put together the ultimate excursion for men (and their girlfriends). Join us in our Soviet van for an entire afternoon of all-inclusive Russian fun on the battlefield!
Start by visiting Park Patriot, the impressive Russian army exhibition center and museum. There, try your driving skills at the T-80 tank official simulator , before you ride on two iconic Soviet armored vehicles (BMP-1 and/or BTR-80) on an off-road training path. Along the way, hone your skills while a drill sergeant shouts commands at you. You may not understand, but impress him anyway with your grenade launching technique and AK-47 assembling speed. Or suffer the consequences.
After that, take another shot of vodka , enjoy the army field lunch provided, and move on to the next activity…
Honey, I shot a bazooka!
Phase two brings a variety of iconic Russian war weapons to the tip of your trigger finger. Learn about and test the Makarov PM, PPSH-41, Kalashnikov AK-47, RPK, DP28 machine gun, several semi-auto or auto carbines and more… Firing off a bazooka is the grand finale, sure to leave you breathless—just before you send the photos to your mom.
To prevent you from inadvertently blowing up your best friend or transforming your girlfriend into a strainer, we only use non-lethal (but real!) ammo.
And because you’ll want to keep the good times rolling, we also offer a 10% discount on pub-crawl tickets.

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .
