Discover scotland.

The seasons in Scotland vary greatly, which can be one of the many reasons to visit again and again, as they all provide their own beauty and spectacle. Although Scotland isn’t blessed with year-round sunshine its climate is (surprisingly) moderate. At Macs Adventure, we offer our self-guided hiking and cycling holidays from March through to October when the weather is most kind.

SPRING IN SCOTLAND

Known as the most predictable time weather-wise, as rainfall is generally at it's lowest. You can expect average maximum temperatures to range from approximately 45°F to 55°F during the months of March, April and May. This is our most popular period for our classic Scottish hikes such as the West Highland Way , so early booking is recommended. It is also the perfect time for visiting the Isle of Skye .

SUMMER IN SCOTLAND

June, July and August are normally the warmest months in Scotland, with average maximum temperatures ranging from approximately 15°C (59°F) to 17°C (63 °F). This time of year is great for cycling the Scottish Islands or for our Drive & Hike trips in the country's far north as you will have plenty hours of daylight.

Events: The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, one of the largest arts Festival in the world. Spend a night or 2 in Edinburgh before our Highlands, Isle of Skye and Edinburgh trip. Make sure to book well in advance though as the city can be very busy indeed.

AUTUMN IN SCOTLAND

September and October are up there with our favorite times to explore Scotland, the scenery is a delight with warm gold and bronze hues, as the leaves and grass change color. The autumn light is warmer, perfect for those interested in photography. Not to mention the crisp fresh air – dreamy! Our Hike & Rail trips are wonderful at this time of year.

Events: Whisky lovers will probably already have the Scotch Whisky Festival noted in your diary for mid-September. Why not tie this into our Islay & Jura Whisky Trails tour? What better way to finish the trip than with a wee (well-deserved) dram!

Best time to visit Scotland

We’re not being biased, but when it comes to places to visit in Scotland, you’re spoiled for choice. Whether you want a to enjoy short city break, explore castles, hop aboard the Jacobite steam train (also known as the 'Hogwarts Express' ) hike a Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3000 ft) or escape to an island. We have the holiday for you!

A year-round travel destination and Scotland’s largest city. Glasgow is a lure for creatives and culture seekers. Described perfectly by Lonely Planet “Disarmingly blending sophistication and earthiness”. Known for its pub culture, live music, friendly faces and Charles Rennie Macintosh architecture.

Recommendations:

  • Enjoy a ‘cuppa’ (cup of tea) in the Willow Tea Rooms, inspired by the works of Charles Rennie Macintosh, This popular afternoon tea spot has become an attraction on its own. Feast your eyes on its walnut paneling, magnificent ceilings and grant sweeping staircase, reserve a window-seat and watch the world go by while enjoying a tasty scone.
  • Take a wander in the West End near Glasgow University, and visit the architecturally splendid Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and its surrounding leafy park.
  • Overnight in Glasgow before walking the West Highland Way . The perfect base to relax, and soak up city-life before you beginning Scotland's most well-known long-distance trek, and it takes just 25 minutes (by train) to reach Milngavie, the start point of the West Highland Way.

Edinburgh is a cultural playground with limitless possibilities. It’s a city of literature, festivals, art, history – and the list goes on. With so much to explore from the history-soaked medieval Old Town to the Georgian elegance of the so called New Town, Edinburgh lives up to its reputation of being of the world's most beautiful cities.

  • If you enjoy a touch of fine dining and upmarket hotels then our In Style tours are for you. Many of these start in Edinburgh, and it’s no secret that Edinburgh has some of the best food in the world a ranging from traditional Scottish dishes to contemporary Scottish cuisine.
  • If theatre and comedy are your thing then you could plan your trip around the annual Fringe Festival, everyone should experience this at least once in their life. Throughout August a myriad actors, performers, musicians, artists and creatives of all skill sets take the city by storm. Come rain or shine, the city is buzzing!

Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is a magical place, home to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. Perfect for adventure-seekers with its mountain ranges, dramatic coastlines and intriguing history. With plenty of itineraries on Skye you can choose between a purists journey on foot covering the length of the island, a Drive & Hike tour for a more flexible and leisurely experience, along with short breaks and a great cycle tour. Discover Skye's most majestic geological features, such as the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Cuillin Ridge.

  • Make the most of your time in Scotland and take it all in on our Highlands & Isle of Skye: Rail & Hike tour. Experience the Scottish Highlands by train and on foot, taking in some of the best scenic rail journeys in the world. Begin in Edinburgh and travel deep into Perthshire and the western Highlands then and across to the Isle of Skye.
  • If traveling in style is more your thing we recommend our Best of Skye In Style short break or our Highlands and Isle of Skye Rail & Hike In Style - stay in beautiful country lodges with menus to please any foodie.

Outer Hebrides

Scotland has never been the most obvious choice for a beach holiday. However, the 15 inhabited islands that make up the Outer Hebrides have some of Europe's most stunning stretches of white-sand – often photographed and mistaken for somewhere in the Caribbean. Arriving on this incredible island you will feel like you have escaped it all.

  • For exploring the entire length of the Hebridean archipelago we recommend our  Outer Hebrides Island Hopscotch adventure. Explore the stunning and remote 130-mile chain of Island that stretch along the North Western Coast of Scotland on a Drive & Hike adventure. Follow the route by car and ferry with daily walks through a mosaic of differing landscapes.
  • For the adventurous hiker combining Skye & the Outer Hebrides could be the ideal escape for you? Hike the highlights of the Skye Trail then hop across to Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and walk a section of the remote Harris Walkway.

Isle of Arran

The Isle of Arran is known as 'Scotland in miniature' . It’s a place where you can find a little bit of everything you’d ever want from a Scottish island. Easily accessible from Glasgow by train and ferry, and yet it feels a million miles away. Immerse yourself in island life as you are surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, an ever-changing coastline, sheltered beaches and great cultural festivals.

  • Explore Arran on foot on our Arran Coastal Way trip, a wonderfully varied walk where you can relax on beautiful beaches, explore the Kings cave, and hike Goat Fell, the island's highest peak, for incredible views to the mainland.

The Best Places to Visit in Scotland

Are you traveling to celebrate a special event, or do you simply prefer to adventure in style? At Macs Adventure we have a range of trips that allow you to experience the Scottish Highlands & Islands in comfort while taking in the best walks. We also include 4 evening meals, and guided day tours of Skye and Loch Ness.

Best of Skye In Style : With included outward travel on a world-class railway from Glasgow this 5 day short break is the perfect island escape. Stay in 4 star hotels, on the remote Sleat Peninsula and in the bustling harbor town of Portree. Soak up the island on our favorite hikes and a private guided day tour.

Great Glen Way In Comfort : Walk the entire Great Glen Way from Fort William to Inverness, overnighting in the best 3-5 star accommodations near the route.

Discover Scotland In Style

Are you looking to include an active element in a longer trip to the UK or Europe? We have a variety of short 5 day & 4 night hiking vacations for you to choose from. Exploring a little corner of Scotland, staying in cozy, hand-picked accommodation, feasting on the local fare and discovering some outstanding scenery is what these trips are all about.

West Highland Escape: Walk the northern highlights of Scotland's most famous long-distance trail, the West Highland Way, from Bridge of Orchy to Fort William.

Great Glen Escape: Take in the best of the Great Glen Way from Fort William to Inverness. Want to experience the highlights of the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way in a limited time-frame, why not combine the Great Glen Escape and the West Highland Escape as part of a longer trip?

Skye Highs Short Break:  From Fort William the Isle of Skye is just a steam train and short ferry ride away (if you take the scenic route, which we do). On arrival on Skye you'll enjoy hand-picked hikes from cozy B&B's.

Best of Skye In Style: With travel from Glasgow included this trip allows you to maximize on time. Overnight in 4 star hotels with mouth-watering menus, easy access to some of the best short walks on the island, and a private guided day tour of the island thrown in for good measure.

Edinburgh to Inverness: Rail & Hike: Take in two of Scotland's bucket-list destinations, stopping en-route in charming Perthshire - land of castles and peaceful forest trails - before arriving in Scotland's most northerly city of Inverness.

Fife Coastal Path Short Break: Follow the Fife Coastal Path north alongside beaches, cliff-top paths and through quaint fishing villages.

If cycling is more your style then check out our  Great Glen Cycleway trip. Mountain bike Scotland's classic Great Glen Way trail, wind your way across the country, tracing the shores of Loch Ness and discovering the country's rich-history en-route.

Short Scotland Hiking Tours

With a week in Scotland, you can delve deep into a region and really discover its beauty.

West Highland Way : Our second shortest and reasonably challenging itinerary on Scotland's most iconic trail. Or way not try the West Highland Way Highlights , selecting the most scenic parts of the trail on an easier itinerary also over a 7 day itinerary.

Great Glen Way : The shortest itinerary on the Great Glen Way, perfect for completing a renowned long-distance trail in just 5 days of walking.

Fife Coastal Path : Walk the entire Fife Coast Path in a week; enjoy fantastic coastal walking, visit quaint fishing villages, and stay in St Andrew's, home to Scotland's oldest university.

St Cuthbert's Way : A moderately graded itinerary for the long-distance walker on the St Cuthbert's Way. Hike from the Scottish Borders to The Holy Island in northern England on this popular pilgrim trail.

Arran Coastal Way : An excellent coastal route taking you around the Isle of Arran, known as ' Scotland in miniature' .  With most walking days between 12-14 miles, and one outlier at 20 miles, this trip is manageable for most walkers.

Speyside Way : Journey from the coast of the North Sea into the Cairngorm National Park on this easy-going long-distance route on forest trails and riverside paths. Stop en-route to sample a dram or two at Speyside's famous distilleries. Glenfiddich, Craigellachie and Ballindalloch to name just a few.

1 Week Hiking Tours in Scotland

On a six day adventure tour of Scotland, you can experience beautiful snapshots of a country. With six days you can explore the Arran Coastal Way . Arran is often described as 'Scotland in miniature' , so this is a great way to experience the essence of Scotland in a short space of time.

If it is Scotland's greatest export (whisky!) you are interested in, then we are happy to accommodate. In Scotland, whisky draws flavor and inspiration from its surroundings. On the Speyside Whisky Trail , you will find well-rounded, open and friendly whiskies that mimic the traits of the Speyside countryside. While on the Islay Whisky Trails you will find peaty whiskies with the salty tang of the sea, harder to approach, but fantastically rewarding once you get there, just like the glorious island of Islay.

6 Day Tours in Scotland

On an eight day active tour in Scotland you can achieve almost anything. Hike the West Highland Way , the most famous trail in Scotland, or take in its highlights and add a rail journey on the Jacobite steam train (the 'Hogwart's Express' ) for good measure on our Highlands and Isle of Skye Rail & Hike In Style .

Explore Scotland's array of spectacular islands from the saddle, by foot, or one on of our flexible drive & hike trips. Alternatively, for a far flung island experience we recommend a tour in the Outer Hebrides; explore this beautiful archipelago on our Skye & The Outer Hebrides hiking tour or our popular Outer Hebrides Island Hopscotch drive & hike trip.

8 Day Tours in Scotland

With nine days, you can take on any of the big classic trails in Scotland at a more relaxed pace. We offer a range of itineraries to suit all levels of walking to showcase the very best trails that Scotland has to offer. We always recommend a trip on the West Highland Way , but here are a few lesser-walked alternatives.

Great Glen Way sees you walking along the Great Glen fault-line that separates the country's northern geology from the southern, as you cross the country from Fort William to Inverness. Alternatively, the St Cuthberts Way pilgrimage leads you through the Scottish Borders, to the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne in England.

9 Day Tours in Scotland

Countless happy hikers have completed The West Highland Way with Macs. It continues to be one of our most popular routes and is a favorite with our team and guests.

For a taste of the experience watch father and daughter on their West Highland Way adventure.

Well done. I would recommend the trip to one and all.

Highlights of Scotland Tour

Highlights of Scotland

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

Scotland Tour

It was a good trip seeing a lot of Scotland and the tour guide was very good. However a few things to improve are: There were too many people in the group so didn't really interact with the rest of them and the language difference didn't help either as I didn't realise that most of them spoke Spanish so the guide had to say everything in 2 languages. There was confusion on the trip as in the main Itinerary, it only mentioned breakfast included but when you looked into individual days it said dinner included, so didn't match. I feel that at least 1 dinner would have been nice to help with interacting with the group. I was a bit disappointed that the distillery changed days instead of the 1st day as I would have liked a bit more time to see Edinburgh especially as it was nice that day. Also the day in Edinburgh shouldn't be on a Saturday as it was too busy. A few places I felt rushed like Fort William as we only had time to get out, see it a bit, have a hot drink and toilet and then go but to be honest there wasn't much there so could have gone anywhere really. It was nice to see the castles except it would have good if Edinburgh castle had been included, but also maybe see something else for a variety like a mine or cave, or we did pass a cable car and that would have been nice. But overall it was a nice trip seeing places around Scotland in the time.

Scotland\'s Orkney Islands Tour

Scotland's Orkney Islands

Fabulous holiday with lovely walks boat trips and visits to historic places. Also swam at a beautiful beach (with a wet suit). Our guide was knowledgeable and flexible and the group got on really well. Highly recommend this trip.

This tour was absolutely SENSATIONAL! It was so surreal to be in filming locations but also so unexpectedly pleasant to stop off at a number of other destinations as well in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Our guide was so friendly and clearly brought his all to the trip. Can't recommend this trip enough.

Isle of Skye & Outer Hebrides

A very good programme with plenty of stops to see all the sights. I enjoyed it for being able to get out of the bus and do lots of walking at the places we visited. Classic Scotland Self Drive

We thought that self driving Classic Scotland in 8 days we would be able to see all the highlights as well as absorb each shire’s culture but there really wasn’t enough time between each towns appointed accommodation. You really need 2-3 days in each area in order to enjoy them fully and see everything that Scotland has to offer. Still, we had an amazing time and have many memories to share with our loved ones back home

What people love about Scotland Tours

An absolute blast from start to finish! The schedule was well paced, every location is stunning, the hostels are decent, the Loch Ness one in particular has some lovely hosts. Neil, our guide, is very knowledgable and constantly dropped awesome lore on top of some banging jokes. I got lucky with the timing as the weather was unusually clear except for the last day, while still cold enough to see snow (lost my snow virginity!!) and avoid the midgies. Oh I got to see the highland coos up close too. Can’t recommend this tour enough as your first experience with Scotland!
I had a great trip with MacBackpackers! Tim was a fabulous guide and full of information about Scottish history. Would recommend if you are coming to explore Scotland.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Bonnie Scotland tour. The location was beautiful and the trip well organized. Our tour guide, Gavin, was simply the best. Loved the experience!!

11 Epic Adventure Activities In Scotland

Gemma Armit

  • Last Updated: January 10, 2023

From shredding awesome ski slopes to white water rafting, these are the 11 best adventure activities in Scotland.

Adventure Activities In Scotland

Rolling hills, monsters in lochs and men in skirts. Sure, Scotland is known for her mesmerising beauty and cheeky banter but Caledonia is more than bus trips to battlefields and the TV show Outlander.

Table of Contents

Paddleboarding In The North Sea

White-water rafting, swinging in scotland, road tripping in a racer, surf’s up in scotland, stay in a castle, zorbing downhill, hit the slopes, hike the mountains, walk the walk, attack ‘the wall’, adventures in scotland.

Here’s our (Gemma and Craig from Two Scots Abroad) guide to the thrilling adventure activities in Scotland.

One of Edinburgh’s most popular day trips is to the town of St Andrews in the Kingdom of Fife. St Andrews is the town responsible for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s union, however; I don’t think the royal pair took part in one of the coolest things to do in Fife, paddle boarding in the North Sea.

The outdoors company, Blown Away, ran by twins, Jamie and Guy, are responsible for getting visitors into the water on boards and kayaks at West Sands.

If water activities are not your bag, the pair also offer land-yachting (also known as land sailing, sand yachting and Blokarting) where you ‘sail’ the sand of St Andrews.

Not adventure based but cannot go ignored; St Andrews is famous for its golf courses. There are ten in total and many more along the East Neuk in Fife. Here you will also find Kingsbarns distillery, whisky and gin lovers.

Paddleboarding Adventure Activities In Scotland

Not quite on par with the rapids at the River Tully near Cairns, many of Scotland’s rivers play host to inflatable dinghies full of daredevils with thick skin (and wetsuits).

Pitlochry’s River Tummel is advertised at a grade 2-5 (we experienced the lower level, unfortunately) and the River Tay at Dundee a grade 1-3.

Head to Perthshire to take the plunge of the UK’s first ever bridge bungee at Killiecrankie (funniest Scottish town name!)

Revellers jump from 132 feet solo or tandem over the River Garry, gloves are recommended for the wait at the top. Action cams are welcomed but customers can purchase photos and shots from the team if not equipped.

Craig and I did this together; I’ve never seen him look so on edge (boom boom!) No seriously, he was terrified but claims he enjoyed it.

Scotland’s hottest new road trip is just over 500 miles around the Highlands, taking in tranquil turquoise beaches, the loveliest of fishing villages, castles and distilleries.

Holidaymakers are not just taking the easy ride in their family cars, thousands are taking to the road in racing cars, push bikes and even campervans.

Check out the Bealach na Ba single-track road to see why that is surprising and one for the adventure lovers itch list.

The Gold Coast, Jeffrey’s Bay , Thurso…

Thurso is the northernmost town of Scotland’s mainland and it is known for its surf. Thurso East at the mouth of the Thurso River is the surf spot which has hosted international competitions.

Brace yourself, autumn and winter months are best for waves.

Adventure doesn’t have to involve moving. You could live like a queen for one night in one of Scotland’s castles (the ones with roofs and heating), making full use of the hotel facilities and living like the clan.

Ackergill Tower Castle is home to Europe’s largest treehouse, find out more at this North Coast 500 accommodation guide .

North Coast 500 Adventure Activities In Scotland

Squat down, strap up and snowball down a hill at 25 mph. Welcome to the world of zorbing. Just outside of Edinburgh, visitors over 5 foot and under 16 stone can experience the life of a hamster that has lost its feet.

It is a misconception that it always snows in Scotland, which is a shame because we have five ski centres – Cairngorms, Glenshee, Glencoe (my favourite area of Scotland), Nevis Range and The Lecht.

Come December, skiers and boarders have their eyes glued to the social media accounts of the ski resorts to assess if the dump is worth the trip.

Never fear, there is ski during the other seasons too in the form of dry slope at Midlothian Sports Centre and fake snow at Braehead in Glasgow.

In Scotland, we have special mountains that come in at over 3000 feet called Munros. There are approximately 282 Munros and hikers call the past time of climbing them, Munro bagging.

Out of the 282, there are Munros suitable for the beginner hiker such as Ben Lomond or Ben Vorlich (our dog, Bowie’s first) at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.

The highest peak at 4411 feet is Ben Nevis (Fort William), which is an additional part of Scotland multi-day hiking trail, the West Highland Way. Definitely one of the best adventure activities in Scotland.

West Highland Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Take in the beautiful scenery of the west coast of Scotland over 4-6 days starting just outside of Glasgow at Milngavie and finishing up 96 miles later in Fort William.

This trek is called the West Highland Way. The Way takes you through rolling hills, past lochs and villages.

You can hire bag handlers to drop your rucksacks off each day at your next guesthouse (B&B) or go hard and carry your bag, tent and camp up each night. Wild camping is legal in Scotland if you follow the camping code.

The Isle of Bute liked the idea of this hike and coined the name ‘West Island Way’ – two-day hike around the island which is short train and ferry ride from the city of Glasgow.

West Island Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Winter doesn’t have to be coming at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. Part of the West Highland Way takes you through the valley at Kinlochleven and in the town sits the indoor activity centre, the Ice Factor.

500 tonnes of real snow and ice is packed 12 metres high; customers hack their way up the wall with the aid of the partner at the other end of the pulley.

The Ice Factor also has an indoor rock-climbing wall for beginners through to experienced climbers that can handle routes from 3+ to 8a.

Then for a bit of fun, you can try the outdoor aerial course full of ropes, strings and swings to test your balance (my parents could not manage it).

So the next time that someone tells you that they are going on a 5-day bus tour of the Scottish Highlands, you can tell them that they are wimps and missing out of the best adventure of their trip – swinging, surfing and having a swally of course!

Perth, Tay River

The good, the plaid, and the whisky

It's said redheads have a reputation for fiery temperaments; in Scotland the same could be said of the entire people, or even the land itself. Somehow, both the land and those who live on it manage to be simultaneously handsome and tough as nails, like a burly highlander in a fine tartan kilt. Fierce, proud, rugged, and beautiful, the land that inspired a thousand songs dips and weaves like a Celtic jig. Scotland's rugged beauty is postcard-famous: lochs, glens, rocky cliffs, and rolling hills are punctuated by medieval castles and stone churches. Nor is it all bagpipes and haggis – Scottish cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh seamlessly blend the ancient and modern, and the music and personalities are strong and distinctive as their whiskies.

There's more to Scotland than rain and whisky. A couple of weeks ago, I hit up the Adventure Travel World Summit in Aviemore on a mission to find the best international trips of 2011. I found them, and also brought back the top active crack in the country—served with a wee dram of the good stuff.

adventure travel scotland

This one speaks for itself. Walk. Drink. Walk off the drink. Drink. Ask which bottles you can't get in the U.S. Pack them up, the extra weight will be worth the bragging at home. Write down your favorite—trust me. If you go to one region, set a path through Speyside's Malt Whisky Trail (home to more than 50 distilleries.) For a wetter break, head to the Isle of Islay (10 distilleries). Follow the trail blazed by famed Outside writer David Quammen —or phone an expert for a little logistical help .

adventure travel scotland

From whales, to stag, to the reintroduced sea eagle, Scotland has more than you might expect in the wildlife watching department. Speyside Wildlife offers a string of all-inclusive tours, from raptors, martens, and seabirds in Speyside and Islay (11 days, $1900 US dollars) to sea eagles and phalaropes in the Outer Hebrides (8 days, $1980 US). Whale watching boats go out from most islands. For a unique wildlife experience, check out Wild Scotland —it keeps a fully stocked online buffet of the best wild outfitters in the country.

adventure travel scotland

The trails on the Isle of Skyle can be muddy, steep, tight, and rocky, but the lodges, B&B's, and whiskey sampled along the way will smooth over the edges at night. Stop at the island's only distillery, Talisker , for a tour. Down the 10-year single malt for a smokey burn. Plan a route that delivers views of both Glen Sligachen and Loch Coruisk. Mac Adventures offers a 7 Day, 8 Night planned route (from $785 US) for those that don't want to bother with logistics, but do want to walk at their own pace.

adventure travel scotland

Set up base camp in the colorful coastal town of Tobermory. Ramble around taking pictures of boats, detritus, and storefronts. For something more active, go during the Tour of Mull Rally . For a relaxed lesson in landscape shots, head out with Sam of Islandscape Photography and snap everything from sheds to seascapes—there's 300 miles of coastline. Take a fluke shot while on a whale watching cruise with Sea Life Surveys . Stay—or at least check out—one of the corner whisky suites at the Western Isles Hotel (from $187 US)—the bathrooms are as big as the view. If it rains during the day, sip a few drams of Tobermory whisky in the local distillery or down the local brew in the Mishnish pub—or both.

adventure travel scotland

The Isle of Tiree offers surfing, SUP, kitesurfing, and just about any other coastal board sport you can think up—even some on sand. Wild Diamond and Suds Surf School offer lessons and rentals. If the wind and waves aren't right, set off for nine holes at Vaul or grab a bike from Tiree Cycle Centre and explore the 12-mile-long island. Stay at the Rockvale Guest House (kings, $65 US). Gorge on dinners of fresh seafood and locally raised lamb and beef and wake up to a full Scottish breakfast, in bed.

adventure travel scotland

Outside gear guru Pieter van Noordennen took off on a trip to Knoydart guided by Wilderness Scotland and had a good enough time that he left some of his gear behind. Here's what he had to say about the kayaking. Just as we were going to don an impressive amount of hardcore rain gear, the skies above us cleared to a Mountain West blue and out came the rainbows, seals, and cormorants. We sea-kayaked in the hot sun (really) and shed layers on our way out white-sand beaches (seriously) on small islands that had more Pirates of the Caribbean than Braveheart . In 2011,wilderness Scotland will be offering a new trip exploring the Scottish Sea Kayak trail (from 1220 US).

adventure travel scotland

Both the Mountain Bike World Cup and Mountain Bike World Championships have been held in the hills around Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak. Trails cater to any fat tire pleasure: downhill, freeride, or cross-country. Beginners should check out Highland Activities . They offer an instructional course in the morning, then push you off on a track that fits your skill level (halfday, $70 US).

The Munros are the 14ers of Scotland, though at a slightly lower altitude—any peak over 3,000 feet. A total of 284 of them poke their heads through the country's frequent clouds. Anyone that climbs them all—and send a name to the Scottish Mountaineering Club —can brag about joining the counties exclusive climbing ranks. Good luck tackling them all in one vacation—the record time is roughly 40 days .

Pedal 249 miles coast-to-coast across the Scottish Highlands and end up with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Though the trip is not about the destination, since the journey features big mountain passes, singletrack cut through dense pine forests, and lodges stocked with hearty meals and local malts. There's a reason we picked this week-long expedition ($1430 US) from Wilderness Scotland as one of the Best Trips of 2010 .

adventure travel scotland

It's #1 because because of the options. It's in the middle of the highlands with loads of activities just a short drive away. During the conference people took off on all sorts of jaunts, from Class III and IV whitewater rafting , to climbing and canyoneering , to canoeing the River Spey and drinking whisky, to hiking to Ben MacDui . Crash at the plus Highland Resort (spa, pool, bar, from $65 US a night) or the charming Cairngorm Hotel (live music, coffee shop, from $70 US a night). For something different, in the morning go gorge walking —think canyoneering in 40 degree water with no ropes. Grab lunch at the Mountain Cafe, making sure to top it off with a slice of home-baked carrot cake . Warm up in the afternoon by clay pigeon shooting. If that doesn't do it, head off for a tour of the Dalwhinnie Distillery.
